You are Clarissa, a high-school student, Kimiko's Substitute Shinigami, violent murderer, and one of Karakura Town's spiritual protectors.

Nemu looks disappointed with your answer, but she doesn't complain or continue to bother you about it. You feel a bit bad for refusing her like this, but you can hardly believe that doing the thing she's asking you to do is going to somehow magically heal her injury. And... even if it did, it's probably for the best that she takes a little time to cool down. Maybe if given some time, she'll realize how bad of an idea chasing after her psychotic 'dad' is, and then she'll calm down and... live a better life.

After a long, awkward pause, the girl speaks up again. "...There's one other method. It's much slower, but..."

...But it doesn't involve doing anything weird. She basically needs you to purchase some chemicals and help her cook up a concoction of some kind. You grab a piece of paper and write the stuff she needs down. Sheesh, these are really... complex names. This doesn't sound like something you can find in a supermarket and it sure as heck doesn't seem safe to drink.

"It's true," Nemu says. "This mixture doesn't do anything on its own, and would probably kill or cripple a normal person. But it triggers certain reactions in my body and it will speed up the natural healing process. If I drink this regularly, it will probably take me a few days to recover."

With how severe her wound is, 'a few days' is basically a miracle. You reluctantly nod and tell her you'll get the stuff, if it's at all possible. It's in your interest for her to recover quickly, goodwill aside - there's probably going to be a whole bunch of nagging from your parents and your brother if she has to live in your room for too long.

You still feel nervous about leaving the house empty, or, well, without at least someone like Paul being around to meet visitors. You don't want to miss Kimiko's arrival.

Later during the day, when Paul's back home, you meet up with Naoko and Ren to go out on this bizarre shopping spree. Neither of them can make heads or tails of your shopping list or where to get these things that you wrote down. You end up calling Moriko for help, as she's a sleepy ace when it comes to chemistry, and she tells you that the things you're looking for aren't commonly sold individually, but can be found in regular household products.

...In stuff like wall paint, bleach, hair dye... is Nemu trying to commit suicide? How is she even going to make a potion out of this?

"A-are you sure she's not wrong about this, Clarissa?" Ren asks, scrutinizing a can of bleach.

When you ask Moriko about the 'mix' that Nemu's requesting, she has no idea what could possibly come out of drinking that combination other than death.

"Are you sure she doesn't have a fever, Clarissa?" Naoko seems to doubt the legitimacy of this all as well.

...

If nothing else, it's good for Clarissa to have some distractions from Kimiko's disappearance. Nemu doing us a favor!

I dunno what we could possibly do to find Kimiko without hoping Urahara pays a visit or anything, though. And I doubt Clarissa will handle sitting still too much longer.

"Well, we can just... ask her about this when we get back. Let's get the stuff so that we don't have to make laps, though."

Though a bit reluctantly, the others agree. You buy the products and the three of you head home.

...

"...No, she doesn't have a fever. Everything seems fine. I'll need to change the sutures periodically, and just check up on her occasionally, but she should heal given enough time," Naoko declares after a pretty thorough examination. Naoko's the closest thing you have to a doctor, and she seems pretty confident in her skills, so you'll just have to trust her on this one. She looks at you expectantly after she's done. You clear your throat.

"Nemu, we couldn't find the things you need separately, but we've... got them like this," You set the grocery bags next to her bed and, still lying down, Nemu checks their contents. After a short while of rustling through the bags, she firmly nods.

"Are you... sure that this is going to work?" Ren asks. Nemu nods again.

"Mayuri-sama used this whenever I suffered an injury as a result of my clumsiness, as both punishment and as a healing method." She casually replies, as if there was nothing strange about what she's just said.

"...Punishment?" You ask, and Nemu nods again.

"The taste is highly unpleasant and the liquid is painful when ingested, but it won't cause me permanent injury. Don't worry, it heals more than it harms, Mayuri-sama made sure of that," She continues, still with that same tone as if she's talking about something completely ordinary. "I should begin making it now. I will need some water. I'll have to use the oven downstairs for a minute or two, unless you have more portable heating equipment at hand, in which case I can do everything I need here. Also, I will need..."

(1/2)
>>
>>40557457
Nemu goes on to name other equipment, the stuff you'd normally find in a chemistry class, and what can be used as replacements for those things in a regular house. Yeah, you do have just about everything she needs.

...

>"Alright, we'll do as you say, as long as it means you'll get better."
>"...Are you trying to guilt-trip me into doing that other thing you've talked about?"
>"Look, I can't let you drink this if it's going to hurt you. Think of a different way."

>>>"...Are you trying to guilt-trip me into doing that other thing you've talked about?"
>>
>>40557474
Ask her if when she recovers, she'd know any healing techniques? If so, then we could have Ren transfer the wounds. Also did we tell Naoko and Ren about the alternative healing method?
>>
>>40557474
>"Look, I can't let you drink this if it's going to hurt you. Think of a different way."
Thinking about it, does it need to be Clarissa? I mean it's not fair to ask either of the other two, especially since we have no big reason to assume they even swing that way, but they are unattached right?
>>
>>40557554
If anything doesn't that make it even more appropriate for them to do it, because they don't swing that way, it'd just be an awkward medical procedure, but for us, it'd feel like cheating. Maybe try using that logic on them.
>>
>>40557525
>>40557554
We can at least brainstorm with them, some potential things to try or work from here.
>>
>>40557576
Somehow I doubt they'll see it that way.
I'm for telling them about it, but not for asking them outright. That would just be pressuring them, and especially Naoko seems like she'd be susceptible to that where Clarissa I'd concerned.
>>
>>40557474
Damn Mayuri, how nasty.
And I guess we know why she preferred the lewd way now.
>>
>>40557626
I guess I figure that if the only reason we won't do it, really, is the irrational belief that Kimiko is going to waltz through the wall, immediately get the wrong impression and storm off, just like our daytime soap operas, then there's no reason not to guilt them into doing it, since it should just be momentary awkwardness on their part.

That's simplifying it anon, they might be very against doing it for example. I don't feel great about asking them to.
>>
>>40557788
Then they won't do it I guess, since our reason for not doing it is even shittier, it's not like we have any grounds to judge them.
>>
>>40557846
Well at least in Naoko's case, it's easy to imagine her not wanting to do it, but recognizing that it would be a help to both Nemu and Clarissa still decides to go through with it rather than straight up refuse if asked. She seems emotionally somewhat immature, and is going through a lot of tough stuff with guilt - and wouldn't refusing to help an innocent girl be something she might feel guilty about? Plus while it might have lessened after seeing Clarissa acting stupid last night, she seems to put a lot of weight on Clarissa's opinion of her.
>>
>>40557930
Though I also feel we should ask Nemu if Mayuri always healed her himself with that more intimate method, or if he ever had anyone else do it? For all we know, he might actually do at least some shinigami magic while he's molesting her, in which case this is just giving her a good time.
>>
>>40557979
That's a good point too.
Not that there's anything wrong with that of course...
>>
>>40557525
>>40557554
You sit down while Nemu continues to explain the process, though you're not really listening. If it's as nasty as she makes it out to be, well, you should at least try to think of a better alternative. You look over to Ren, who's trying to listen attentively, though her attention is starting to wander off when she begins to lose track of things. Your eyes meet and she lifts a brow, probably curious about your thoughtful expression. An idea springs to your mind.

You speak up when Nemu finishes talking. "Do you know healing magic, Nemu? I know something like that exists, so..."

The girl shakes her head. Well, there goes the idea of using Ren's ability. ...And that's probably for the best, too, because you don't really like the idea of getting a friend hurt. Her ability is really... situational, huh?

"I... really don't like this chemical drinking method. I think we should go with the alternative..." You give Nemu a meaningful look, or at least try to, but you're starting to get embarrassed. She also doesn't seem particularly enticed by the idea of bringing that up again. The other girls glance back and forth between you two. Naoko looks puzzled, while Ren seems skeptical.

A silence persists for a bit. Ren gets tired of it and speaks up. "What's the alternative?"

You scratch the back of your head. "Well... Nemu, you should tell them."

Nemu seems hesitant. You don't feel particularly enthused about hurrying her, but Ren gets fed up with the strange tension. "So what is it, Clarissa?"

You... should probably drop this. It's just going to make everyone uncomfortable. You're about to tell them to forget it, but Nemu speaks up... and repeats what she had told you a few hours ago. She eased them into it by using normal-sounding terminology, just like when she explained it to you, and then... explained what all those terms really meant in words you really can't misinterpret.

(1/3)
>>
>>40558892
Ren lets out a gasp, covering her mouth with a hand. After that, the room descends into another awkward silence.

"...I don't get it," Naoko's the first to speak up. She still looks puzzled, but not particularly... impressed. Not like you were, and not like Ren is. "How does repetitive insertion into the-"

"W-we all heard what she said, Naoko!" You yell at her.

"...Huh? I meant to say that I don't understand how this is supposed to be a healing procedure. To begin with, it's not the injured areas that would be touched and interacted with, but the-"

"Naoko!"

"What?" She looks almost hurt now.

How can someone be so perceptive as to be able to tell when something is wrong about a person just by the way they fucking breathe, and yet at the same time be so oblivious that they don't understand what's uncomfortable about this situation?

"I-I mean... Naoko's kind of right..." Ren says. "I don't really get how this is supposed to help, either, but... it doesn't really sound THAT terrible. ...Have you tried it, Clarissa?"

"Are you kidding me? Of course not!"

Ren snorts, stifling her laughter at your sharp denial.

"What's so goddamn funny? If it's that amusing, how about you do it, eh, Ren?" You say, and the red-haired girl's eyes widen.

"No way! That's just..." She turns away, accidentally glancing over the chemical crap you've purchased. Her face sours up a bit, probably imagining Nemu drinking it all. "I-if there's anyone here who should do it, it's probably you, Clarissa. I mean, you're... you know..."

"What the hell kind of reasoning is that? How does that make it easier for me? Even if that's the case, that doesn't mean I'm a pervert!"

"...I can do it. I doubt it'll work, but it sounds simple enough," Naoko declares. "If it doesn't work then we can just try something else."

(2/3)
>>
>>40558929
Problem solved.
>>
>>40558929
"No way!" You find yourself suddenly protesting, almost involuntarily so. There's just something weird about making Naoko do it, -especially- since she's so oblivious to it all. "I mean, I can't really make you do something that. I brought her here, so... that makes it my responsibility, I guess..."

Naoko looks at you in her ever-persistent confusion. Her expression is growing more stern by the moment, gradually turning into something resembling annoyance.

Everyone seems to be waiting for you to make up your mind. Why do you always get the hard decisions?

...

Not a vote but I don't particularly get Clarissa's logic here, if anything that seems exactly why Naoko should do it.
>>
At least they didn't react too badly to this reveal.
>>
>>40559109
If anything Naoko reacted ideally, which is why I don't get why we're insisting on doing it, because again, Kimiko can walk through walls.

While the others reactions makes me less opposed to Clarissa doing it, I also think there's little reason not to have Naoko do it, while there are several not to have Clarissa do it.

"...Alright. If you're really okay with it, Naoko, you can do it."

You don't really know why your answer is so hesitant and reluctant, as if it took you a considerable effort to force it out. Are you really embarrassed by this situation so badly?

Naoko nods, resolute and impassive. She steps towards Nemu's bed and pulls the blanket off of her; the girl isn't wearing anything but a nightgown you've loaned to her.

"Ho-hold on a second! Let us at least leave before you start!" You stand up from your seat, heading towards the door.

"You don't have to leave. It won't take long." Naoko nonchalantly replies, sitting down on the bed.

Ren makes her way to the door. "It's about privacy, Naoko..."

You dart out of the room, almost shoving the red-haired girl away in your dash for the exit. She blurts out a complaint, but you pay it no heed; Ren closes the door after she leaves. The two of you sit down by the wall, in front of the room, and wait.

"Is everything alright, Clarissa? You seem kind of tense." She notes, and it's true - you don't feel happy about this at all.

You shake your head, though. "Yeah. Everything's fine."

A pause. To break it up, you elaborate a bit. "I think Naoko's attitude just... pissed me off. I don't really know why."

"She looked at the situation like a real pro of a doctor, I think. I mean, she didn't think about the funny side at all. It's like just another procedure to her or something, you know?" Ren contemplates for a bit, apparently not finding it annoying at all; no, it seems that she finds it as something worthy of praise. "Sure, her reaction was kind of funny compared to ours now that I think about it, but... why are you mad?"

(1/3)
>>
>>40560810
"I'm not mad at all. Forget it." You hug your knees. Your ears twitch slightly, picking up noises coming from behind the locked door. Like a girl's ecstatic moans. You're pretty sure - and really hope, actually - that it's Nemu. If Ren wanted to say something else, that made her choke on her own words. You hang your head, feeling absolutely pathetic. The sounds stop quickly, thankfully.

Ren lets out another snort, failing to stealthily stifle her laughter again. You glare at her. "Just what is it that's so funny? Are you twelve?"

"Are you... are you jealous?" She suddenly says, smirking.

"What? Of what?! What the hell are you talking about, Ren? Don't you know that I'm-..." The door's opening interrupts your yelling.

Out comes Naoko, inviting the two of you back in. "It worked." She declares, matter-of-factly, like a doctor having concluded a surgery. Nemu is curled up in your bed, wrapping the blanket around herself. You can't help but notice how her face is still a bit red.

"I had to quickly take out the sutures once I realized that it was actually working. I couldn't really stop during the process, but thankfully, I had one hand free, so it was no issue. That's why it took a bit longer than it should have." Naoko explains, and Ren whistles, still chuckling a bit.

"You're a real pro after all, Naoko! Are you going to be a doctor?" She says, maybe meaning it as a joke. Naoko shrugs and gives an uncertain reply.

(2/3)

>>40560832
"I'm going to strangle that fucking scientist..." You sigh, muttering curses to yourself. "...Well, Nemu's fine now, right?"

The girl in question meekly nods. "I'll... get up in a second."

"Rest if you need to." You discard her concern, though it comes out kind of harshly. She's too stubborn to listen to you, though, and quickly gets up. She doesn't really have any useable clothes of her own, and yours are a bit too big for her, but Ren volunteers to let Nemu borrow some of her stuff until they all go and buy her something more fitting; at a glance, Ren and Nemu seem to be about the same size. Well, Ren's a little shorter, but it's probably fine.

Bring up that considering just how shady Mayuri is, it's more than a 100% certain that he implanted some form of tracking device in Nemu, so if he wants her he can probably get her when he's settled down. "Now, hold up a minute, Nemu," You grab her by the shoulders and guide her back to bed. The girl doesn't really resist. "You need to rest more. After all that trouble we really can't risk you dropping again."

"It wasn't really troublesome," Naoko begins, and you almost kill her with your glare. Her eyes widen in surprise, and she hastily adds. "B-but Clarissa is right. You should spend a day or two here and make sure that there aren't any complications."

"I... suppose," Nemu says, lying down. "It may not be as reliable when it's done by someone else, after all. If I'm not being a burden, then I suppose I can..."

Well, that was surprisingly easy. You tell her that it's fine. Ren, in the meantime, tries to wander off. "I'll go get something for her to wear. I'll be back soon."

"You hold up, too." You take her by the arm and drag her out of the room. You suddenly remember something, and briefly come back to tell Naoko to go check up on how Paul's doing downstairs, and if he... if he got suspicious, or something. And to wait for you there. The girl obediently nods and makes her way downstairs.

Ren puts a hand on her side as she stands around in the hallway, looking at you. "What's up?"

"What the heck did you mean?" You whisper to her.

She seems a little confused at first, but catches on quickly. "Don't worry about it. I was joking."

You're not convinced. You urge her to continue with a stare. "Well... you were all tense and upset about their... time alone. Like, you were being awkward about it like it meant something to you. So it kind of looked like you were jealous, I guess?"

(1/3)
>>
>>40562424
"...Of who?"

She frowns a bit. "...Look, I was kidding. You're being kind of weird. Don't take it so seriously," Ren keeps trying to drop it. You don't say anything; your glare seems to be enough for her to reluctantly continue. "...I don't know 'of who', Clarissa. Were you really jealous? I mean, we could talk it over if you want."

Well, if she really was just kidding, then it's probably nothing. "Nah, I'm cool..."

"You sure? I'm not going to joke around or anything. I won't tell anyone, either."

"It's really fine. I just... got worried over nothing." You sigh and step back a bit.

...It's not that you're desperate enough to be upset you've 'missed your chance' or something as dumb and childish as that. You hope Ren's not going to come to that conclusion. It's something else. You do feel kind of gutless for laying that troublesome situation on Naoko, but that's not really it, either. It's like... something of yours has been sullied.

You can't really talk about that with Ren. It's so petty, and doesn't seem like you at all.

"So... you wanna go pick Nemu some clothes?" She asks.

>>40562505
You shake her head. "I need to stay home. Kimiko might come back, you know?"

Your friend nods. "I guess. I'll leave you with Naoko, then. Unless she really wants to go dress up Nemu." She chuckles; you force a smile, but you don't find it funny at all.

After Ren leaves, you spend some time with Naoko. You don't do much other than laze around on the sofa and watch the TV, making poor attempts at small-talk. Well, it's nothing unusual with her; you're kind of used to it, really. She spots a game console, and, after asking you what it is, you boot up a game and show it off.

It's pretty clear that she's never played a game in her entire life. She's not really a quick learner when it comes to this, either - you basically have to play for her most of the time. But it's still a lot of fun.

She did fairly well between the pre-quest murder and asshole hollow.

"Where'd you learn to treat wounds like that, Naoko? That stuff wasn't just basic first aid."

"After I made a mistake during training and hurt myself, a doctor had to suture my wound. After I recovered, I asked him how to do it, and he taught me." Naoko calmly explains. It feels like she's gotten more talkative. You were expecting something along the lines of 'A doctor taught me', and that's it.

"Do you still talk to that doctor?" You lean back a bit on the sofa, relaxing.

"No. After that incident, I've been interested in medicine. Mainly to help myself if something bad happened again."

"That paid off pretty quickly, huh? So are you really planning to be a doctor? Ren might have been messing around, but I think you could really pull it off."

"No... I don't think I'm suited for something like that." Her denial is a bit surprising.

"You seem pretty good at it. Could probably save a lot of lives, you know?" You try to encourage and cheer her on a bit.

But it had the opposite effect. "I don't want people's lives to depend on me. The last time that happened, I messed everything up. I don't want another chance at it."

"I... still don't think you've done anything wrong, Naoko. You just didn't know, and no one could have told you. You did all of that because you wanted the best for people. Don't blame yourself for it."

"It's not an excuse. Nobody would want a doctor like that. The doctor who wishes for the best and lets all of his patients die is worse than someone who doesn't care and saves everyone. I don't deserve to be forgiven just because I was ignorant." Naoko still persists at that; you don't agree with her. You don't really agree with her analogy, either. It's not that she isn't 'right', per se. It's just that her case is different.

You let out a sigh. Her stubbornness about this is really bothering you, but you can't think of a way to convince her. It seems like you can't do anything to help it, at least not yet.

"Clarissa..." She starts, but ultimately never finishes.

"...Yeah?" You urge her on. Instead of answering, she passes you the controller.

"It's your turn." Is that her way of dropping the subject? ...You shouldn't be pushy about it. It's easy for someone like you to tell just how unpleasant it all is.

...For now, you should just go on with the day.

Ren comes back, brandishing what's probably at least half of her wardrobe. Talk about being overzealous, huh. You thought she'd just bring over a skirt and a blouse for Nemu to wear, but it seems like it won't sit right with Ren unless the clothing absolutely, most certainly suits her and is stylish enough to kill... or something. A lot of kindness for a complete stranger, for sure. ...Hah, as if you're one to judge someone for that.

You go upstairs and unload everything on Nemu. She doesn't look particularly enthused when it comes to fashion, but, well, she doesn't seem bothered or annoyed by the red-haired girl's insistence to try various combinations of her many clothing pieces, either. The only person who actually looks bored is Naoko - you laugh at that, but refuse to explain to her why. It seems that your paranoid complex was based on absolutely nothing, after all.

Ren couldn't really decide on anything suitable. She disagreed with most of the sets you found good. Eventually, she spots a pattern in your opinions. "Just because it's tightfitting doesn't mean it looks good, Clarissa! That has its place, and it's clearly not here!"

Well, she kind of got you there. The clothing's a bit small. Your friend is ultimately unsatisfied with all of the options, so she instead writes down Nemu's sizes and promises to go shop for something better. By the time Ren ends her fashion exhibition, it's fairly late; the sun had set, and the streets have gotten unpleasantly dark. The two of them head home, leaving only you and the Shinigami. She goes to bed immediately, seeming kind of tired. Well, she should rest. You don't really have a reason to bother her.

As you lie down, you find yourself just as unwilling to sleep as the night before.

Kimiko still isn't here.

You weren't as rigorous in calling her phone as you should have been. Your own phone doesn't have any missed calls.

...It's really unfortunate that there's nothing you can do to distract yourself at night. The wait gets really awful when you're not doing anything, or aren't with anyone.

...

Thanks for running.
If Clarissa had gone through with it instead of Naoko would you have let Kimiko return early just to walk in on it? And how embarrassed/mortified would Clarissa have been while doing it?
