You approach the trio of hunters slowly, crouched low, but not stealthily enough. Whether you or Nurrim, you're not sure, but they notice one of you.

"Shit, the dog got out!"

The one with the axe steps forward, hefting the weapon in sturdy hands as the hunters armed with bow and spear step back, flanking him. The bowman draws his weapon, taking aim at Nurrim. The spearman drops down into a crouch, the head of his weapon dipped down toward the ground. You swallow deeply. They don't look like anything like the wild monsters or animals you'd fought before. They seem organized. What's worse, they seem capable...

You hold in place, shifting from foot to foot, still crouched as you watch them. Your tail swishes slowly from side to side, ears pricked up, listening for anything that might give some indication of... you're not certain what, but the situation's already far too tense for your liking.

Backing this, the melee users will be hard pressed to attack us if their bowman comrade is too close and we can take out the ranged user pronto.

No point actually trying to negotiate, these people don't seem likely to make good on any words they'd agree to even supposing they did talk. But it mightn't hurt to feign a parley to catch them off guard.

By the way, do these guys count as evil enough that Yra's blessing is super effective against them? Or is that more of a light v dark thing than a good v evil?

At this point I would welcome the gentle kiss of oblivion.

Also, think I'm going to do away with the "attack/defense" rolls and just have you make combat prowess rolls. I was running where DOS on attack vs. defense resulted in damage, but maybe I should take a page from Khornette Quest and just call it "You need X DOS to pass the encounter." Less dice, faster action.

You rush the bowman as the mist writhes like a living thing about you, rising up and surrounding the men. They don't pay it any mind, though. Bowman looses his arrow, and it whizzes by your ear harmlessly as you charge, intent on your target. So intent that you don't notice as the man with the axe steps in front of you, swinging the axe into your side, the blunt back-end driving into your flesh and sending you spinning into the grass.

You yelp in pain, moving with the blow and landing in a crouch, a hand on your side. SON OF A- that hurt! You growl deep in your throat, the noise high-pitched and reminding you more and more of a small, ratlike dog you think you knew of once that was the bane of your very existence. You rise slowly, wincing as your body seems unwilling to cooperate.

The bowman has drawn another arrow as Nurrim rushes to your side. The spearman slides between you and she with a practiced ease, jabbing at her core. She darts to the side, grabbing the spear just behind the head and snarling at the man, murder in her eyes.

The axeman advances on you slowly, patting the haft of his weapon into his hand. "Now, now. Here's what's gonna happen. Be a good little bitch and get back in your pit, and we might keep you in once piece until we find somebody to buy you. You're just as good to us in pieces. Your friends, too."

The sound of shattering wood behind him draws his attention for only a moment. Nurrim holds the broken-off head of the spear in one hand like a dagger, advancing slowly on the spearman as he backs away toward his fellows. The bowman turns, levelling his weapon on her as the spearman changes of his grip on the haft, wielding it like an impromptu staff.

Axeman scowls. "Useless gods-be-damned..."

You will roll dice for the enemies (the amount depending on their skill) and take the lowest of the rolled dice.

The current system for allies and us are rolling a single d100 for each character (you rolling for allies and us for Nadia) and choosing the lowest of all dice rolled for all characters.

The proposed system for allies and us is to have us roll for both and then YOU decide how well they do at whatever.

Nurrim gives a feral shout, lunging at the spearman with the head of his own weapon. The man bats it aside casually, almost disdainfully, stepping to the side as the archer looses an arrow, striking the older woman in the shoulder. Her war cry turns to a howl of pain as she drops the weapon, opposite hand flying to the shaft embedded in her flesh.

Your eyes widen, tail and ears rigid. Blood... that... you'd seen blood before, more than enough for your young life, but this was... different. Raw. Visceral. A friend's. Your breath comes harder, in short, heavy pants, and a voice that seems to not at all be your own rips forth from your throat. You charge forward, eyes wide and a look of fury frozen on your face as you bring your claws to bear on the axeman.

You rake across his chest, tearing at the leather of his clothes as he practically dances away, driving the blunt side of the axe into your shoulder. You think you feel bones crunch and hear a muffled scream from inside the cage behind the three huntsmen. You can't break your momentum, following forward into the axeman into a clumsy sort of hug. Your shoulder aches terribly.

You hear another crack, and Nurrim snarls, but you can't chance a look. You don't have a grip on the axeman, but at least you're inside his reach. Sort of.

The fog rises around you, and you hear the bowman curse, the thick mist blocking vision beyond a few feet in front of your face.

The axeman growls and shoves you off of him, and you stumble back, panting heavily. Your side aches, your arm hangs limp at your side, the skin under your fur already purple-black and swelling. He spins the axe in his hand with a practiced ease, turning the bladed edge down.

"Well, it's a damn shame. You probably could have fed me through the winter, as much coin as you would have brought in alive. That's fine. Maybe there's some part of you that some freak would buy. Hundred-tails will appreciate the gift anyway. Don't worry about the dragon girl. I promise: She's going to pay for every bit of this problem you've caused us."

Your heart thuds heavily in your chest. Is it all going to end here? He steps toward you as he raises the axe, cruelty in his eyes. You're only three weeks old. This isn't how it's supposed to be. You're supposed to be at home, running and playing, listening to uncle's stories, and learning how to be a good kobold from mama and papa. Having fun, causing trouble, and just being a pup. Right?

The axe comes down.

"Goodbye, dog."

No.

Your heart stops.

No...
>>
>>40564411

Seriously, the second he rolls below 10, I ask myself why the fuck I'm participating. And if he rolls after instead and does the same thing, well, great job. You probably just invalidated what someone thought was a good roll.

>>
>>40564435
Your hand snaps out, grabbing the haft. Your heart pounds. Thud... thud-thud... thud-thud-thud-thudthudthudthuDTHUDTHUDTHUDTHUD!

You clench your hand, snapping the axe handle in half.

"What the..."

"NO! NO! NO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" You let out an ear-splitting howl, ripping the haft out of the man's hand and tossing it aside, lunging forward and forcing him to the ground. There is no more thinking, there is no more feeling. There is only you, and your enemy. The air is cold, the moon is high, your eyes tremble with unbridled fury as you pull back a fist, driving it into the man's face. You feel bones crack under your blow, and again, and again. He's not shouting any more. He's not making any sounds remotely resembling speech any more. He bucks hard, trying to force you off of him, but no.

You won't be denied your prey.

You bear your fangs, snarling and snapping at his face, long strings of saliva dripping down your maw into his shattered visage. He looks up at you in abject terror. You can practically taste it, the fear of the hunter in the heart of the hunted. It makes you feel a thrill in your soul that you didn't know you were capable of. He shudders under you, and another blow brings him still, his head falling back, throat exposed.

>As opposed to, what, "Here's a standard DC for this encounter, roll once to overcome your enemies?" No.
Make it multiple rolls then, have entire sets of DCs for every enemy depending on difficulty. Modify the DCs as the battle goes on to account for wounds and fudge them for more difficult encounters. Hell you don't even have to declare the DCs in thread if you want a more difficult battle.

Right now? This? This is not working. It merely frustrates your players and puts it too much on luck instead of skill and planning.

You can vaguely see the outline of two figures in the mist, one knelt before the other, the kneeling figure holding it's throat. You hear croaking, gagging sounds. The mist shifts, and you see a mass behind the knelt figure that could be-

You move in a heartbeat, darting through the mist and grabbing Nurrim, dragging her out of the way. She's in rough shape, battered and bruised. The arrow shaft has broken off, still lodged in her shoulder. You drag her out of the mist and lay her against the trunk of a tree before you turn back, diving once more into the shifting, silvery mass and run for the cage. The bowman stands guard in front of the cage, eyes shifting left and right cooly. He hasn't noticed you, but you can smell it on him: fear. You can smell a lot of things, it seems: adrenaline in the air, the rancid sweat under the hunter's leathers, the malice of these men.

You snarl softly and the bowman jerks to face the mist in your direction, squinting toward you. The shifting wall begins to thin, the magic beginning to fade. You didn't hear Emma cry out. Hopefully she's safe.

Djanna sits knelt in the center of the cage behind the bowman, gagged, with her arms tied behind her back.

>Take out the bowman

I think I found the problem with this system. A roll vs system only works with heavy modifier use, except Lotus only uses them to make things harder leaving Nadia mechanically average or worse at everything. A jobber should not be as adept at combat as the main character.

You get three dice, typically, to their one, not counting when you have allies fighting with you. Am I running a different quest than you're reading, or have you not been facerolling everything up to this fight? You're three weeks old. Yes, you're only about as strong as the average mook right now. Why does this surprise you?

Consider it like an RPG. We're a level two kobold against level appropriate named enemies no more than two or three above us. That means we're going to be spending most of our time getting our ass kicked and winning by the skin of our teeth through cheesing and item abuse.

The day will come when we're overleveled, overpowered, and going through hundreds of these guys without breaking a sweat. But this is not that day.

just saying, we tend to get into situations where we could die pretty easily, and yes that is mainly the fault of our shitty luck, but we've been facing combat encounters pretty often. again, it's not really your fault, since we keep going after them like idiots, but at the rate we've been going it feels like we should at least be getting more combat prowess and skill, if not actually evolving. also, three weeks? I thought we've been traveling for some time now

And the three hundred year old fox person who's also getting her shit pushed in? Seriously, the biggest thing is that this is a sudden, jarring transition from cute to deadly. Add to that that getting your ass kicked isn't generally fun and this was pitched as a light hearted romp, and you have your solution or rather your problem.

Typically you ignore the dice advantage of the players when assigning difficulty to an encounter as it takes the place of plot armor and a buffer against the player hating /tg/ dice gods. I'm a little miffed that there seems to be no way to gain a mechanical advantage through tactics or character growth as is typicak, which invalidates a lot of player agency. Seriously, a kobold with a heightened sense of smell, a dragon, and an illusion using kitsune set an ambush and get no advantage from it? It just seems like any sort of creativity or tactic use only serves to avoid mechanical punishment at best.

You growl softly, considering your options. Even in your present state of mind, you know that you're hurt, even if you don't feel it right now. You dash up, using the fading mist for the cover it provides, reaching out and wrenching the wooden bars of the makeshift cage out of arrangement, splintering them easily. The bowman turns, dashing around the corner toward you as you reach in and grab Djanna. She looks up at you in... fear? Yeah, you smell it, but coming from her... now's not the time.

You run back to where you left Nurrim, finding Emma standing beside her, pale and trembling as she struggles to maintain the illusion. The elder kitsune is barely hanging on to consciousness, and you aren't feeling too well yourself. You set Djanna down and rip the bindings off her arms. She reaches up and pulls the gag out of her own mouth, turning to you and touching her trembling claws to your cheeks. "Nadia... are you ok-"

"We need to go..." Emma lets her hands drop and turns to move, passing out and falling backward into Nurrim's arms. The elder woman winces, cradling her sister with her good arm and struggling to her feet, biting her lip.

Djanna looks between the three of you. Your head is pounding now as your heart begins to calm. You feel sick to your stomach, your muscles tremble and oh god, there's that dislocated shoulder. You fall forward and Djanna catches you with a yelp. "Nadia, no! We gotta go! We can't-"

The mist disperses, the evening twilight brightening the clearing. You hear them shouting, trying to rouse the axeman, calling for Malachi. Djanna shudders and turns carefully, supporting you on her back as she tries to heft you. She grunts with effort as she manages to somewhat shoulder you. "C'mon, sister. This time, I'm carrying you..." You don't have the strength to point out that, once again, you saved her.

The four of you, Djanna carrying you and Nurrim carrying Emma, slink off into the woods.

>>
>>40565462
That's not the only thing that's the problem Lotus, The sudden toneshift is aswell what with the threats to kill everyone off IC and OOC
>>
>>40565362
Essentially, taking our planning and natural advantages into consideration, as well as having our NPC allies be smart. Maybe having a well thought out plan of attack gives a -20 bonus, maybe instead of charging the spear guy ms. 300 year old illusion specialist should've used an illusion. all of our allies are trying to fight like melee mooks, when that's not what they're good at, and we don't get any real bonus's for planning and forethought, or our natural abilities, that's WHY human characters have the job system, the monsters have a natural advantage because of their hightened sense's and evolving
>>
>>40565462

Near as I can tell, the tried-and-true, never-seen-anybody-complain-about set DC per action/encounter seems to be the favourite over the "QM rolls for number to beat" system you're using.

Just have X action require a roll of Y or below to succeed.
>>
>>40565495
yeah, admitedly the setting IS kinda darker, but constant fearmongering in "cutebold quest?" kind of a mood-killer.
>>
>>40565462

That's not likely to work. One because you can't please everyone, and two, because you're already agitated over this.

The real problem here is that the enemies don't suffer penalties nearly as much as the protagonist, and a single d100 roll has too high a statistical variance which makes it far too likely that even the best plan will just fall apart at a moment's notice.

tl;dr
> More bonuses for the protagonist
> Less penalties for the protagonist
> More penalties for enemies
> Less severe penalties for a single bad bad dice roll

Alternately, and this may be crazy
> Stop rolling dice for the enemies and/or inanimate objects
>>
>>40565462
Just do what you're doing, except take environmental and tactical factors into considrration. Emma being 2 spooky? Morale penalty to attacks. Attacking an unaware enemy? Penalty to defense. You don't need to overload it, just give us some way to consistently shift the odds in Nadia's favor.
>>
>>40565514
and don't make it roll for the whole encounter, have every action be a choice, like we have so far, just give them a set DC to beat, instead of having one DC for the encounter, or having every roll have an opposing one. like banished quest, the players have direct control over combat so that one roll doesnt fuck them, but the rolls are against a set DC designed to make sense for the opponent their facing. mook enemy? low dc. boss? high DC
>>
>>40565548
>>40565514
So, here's a question.

How do you (or other quests) handle combat like this? Certain number of successes to pass the encounter, or what?
>>
>>40565669
Further, you realize that's going to make the fights feel a lot less visceral. You're going to win a lot more than you're going to be threatened, and you're not going to have the rare chances where you can snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. If you're all right with that, I'm not going to fight it.
>>
>>40565669

Generally speaking over quests go by this formula
> The DC is set by the QM behind the scenes with the exact number corresponding to MC aptitude and level of difficulty
> A good plan lowers the DC

> Generally speaking, the QM takes best of three
> Success by a wide margin (according to QM standards) produces a certain amount of progress toward victory
> NPCs get one roll of their own to gauge their own success.
> Enemy's success is dictated by player/NPC failure
>>
>>40565669
It's a dc, distance from the DC= effectiveness
let me give an example. say you're fighting an enemy of roughly equal skill to you (roll over cause it's easier for my brain) His DC is 50.
If the players roll, and get a 55, they hit the enemy, but it's a glancing blow. If they roll >65 or so, it's a solid hit, and does a medium amount of damage. >80, and it's a great hit, does heavy damage. 100, that fucker just got his arm chopped off. now the other way, 45, you barely damage the enemy at all, but that's about it <30, you miss the enemy completely. <20, you miss the enemy, and are throw off balance, or otherwise put in a bad position 1 you seriously fucked up, fall prone, get disarmed, or tripped, something along those lines. the key thing, is that the enemy never damages the player on the players turn, and the player never damages the enemy on the enemies turn. the situation changes, but say if the players fail the dc by a medium amount, the enemy doesn't stab them in the gut
>>40565775
basically this
>>
>>40565669
Soma's got a decent system set up in Banished and Warlord has something similar with favors. that said
>>40565775
also tends to apply to it.
>>
>>40565758
Who said we wanted visceral fights in the first place? You came to that conclusion on your own and changed the quest, We wanted cutebold adventures
>>
>>40565669

Generally seems to go roll-per-action, with each action having a variable DC depending on skills and how much sense the action makes.

ex if Nadia chose to attack an archer in melee, she might need a 70 or lower to succeed because she's skilled in melee while the archer isn't. Attacking an axeman like we did might need a 50, but the mist would screw with his perception, giving us a -5 bonus (or shifting the DC to 55).
If we'd charged an axemaster or some similarly skilled melee enemy, we'd need a 40 or a 30.

The number of successes required depends on the situation and how well we've rolled, but generally seems to be a two-success minimum (one successful attack, then another successful attack) unless the first was a critical success, in which case it would be a one-round fight. Again, depending on the skill of the enemy.
>>
>>40565821
Speak for yourself. I like how the quest is progressing.
>>
>>40565758
trust me, we're fine with that. if you want to run a more bloody quest, I suggest you find a different subject matter, or advertise the quest as such.
most people don't look at a title like "kobold quest" and think:
Oh cool, I bet their's going to be a lot of death and maiming in that quest
>>
>>40565758

Thing is, most of us signed up for cutebold adventures. If you want to tell a different story now, fine, but the dice system we are talking about doesn't so much preclude things being "visceral" or "difficult". This simply takes out a lot of the confusing statistical variance.

We can still roll low (or high, as the case may be). We can still make bad plans (or goods ones). It's just with the player dice solution we don't have a good roll and a good plan precluded by you getting amazing (or terrible) dice luck.
>>
>>40565849
No one's even been maimed or died. We didn't even kill a bandit when we were fully within our rights to do. Stop overreacting.

>>
>>40565833
All right. Simple enough.

>>40565852
Okay, let me ask you this.

What does "cutebold" mean to you? Nadia is cute. Nadia will remain cute. That's her personality. That's what she is. She may go through Hell on not!Earth, but she'll do her damnedest to protect her friends and come out smiling on the other side, and if anything happens to her friends, she'll ballpunch the gods themselves in order to fix it, or more likely give them puppydog eyes until they send her on some quest to fix things. She may have doubts, worries, concerns, or fears, but hey. That's being mortal. That's being young.

What is cute to you?
>>
>>40565941

Not getting KO'd in a single round because of bumpkis rolls and then threatened with wholesale slavery. Really, I can see how this works out in a larger story. The scene wasn't bad, but I'd like you to stop rolling.
>>
>>40565941
The fact is, when you SAY "cutebold" players typically don't expect to be put into a situation where, if they fail, They're friend will be turned into alchemical reagents, their other friend will be skinned and their fur sold, their character will be killed and used by a shapechanger, and they're third friend will be forced to watch, and likely die in a suicidel attempt to rescue them. honestly, Huehuehue's write-up was a LEGITIMATELY POSSIBLE OUTCOME here, based on how bad our luck was. "If you have bad luck you all die horribly" is not the average thing one expects from something called "cutebold quest" you're basically taking a wide-eyed innocent, telling the people reading that "hey look at this girl she's so cute" and then throwing a world of rape and murder at her.
I believe TV tropes has a phrase for this, "breaking the smile" or something like that
>>
>>40565941
I think people expected more lighthearted or SOL type stuff as opposed to what we just experienced. Im honestly thinking that people are mostly upset because we were getting our shit kicked in. Nobody complained about the system when we were winning. But it IS flawed.
>>
>>40565941

I'm assuming that most people presume that 'cute' of cutebold applies, at least as a general concept, to the entire setting. There might be hardship and struggle, but never in the overwhelming, dark and depressive way, always in the manner that allows some light to shine through.

Hopelessness and hell-on-not!Earth isn't something that meshes well with the cutebold concept, no matter how plucky the main character might be.

You really want to know what I had planned if you hadn't broken out?

You get sold off, the party gets split. You get a chance to escape, the boat you're on sinks, whatever. You're alone innawoods. Feral bold go.

That was the extent of what was going to happen. I was literally going to rip off Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey.

Guys, I'm sure I've said you can die, but explicitly said I won't arbitrarily kill you because of shit dice.

See. There's something to be said about not realizing what makes your quest good. Saying "You'd still have the quest, after you lost everything that made it worth playing, all of your friends and better than your actual family, family" misses the point. It's not the same quest at that point.

>>
>>40566154

Honestly, no money, being little more than a newborn pup (which apparently Nadia still is), alone, friendless, outcast by my simple appearance. I'd likely be killed before long, whether it be by elements, people, or my own hand when I realized on top of all of this, my friends might have it worse.
>>
>>40566154
How would we get home? we have no knowledge of geography, a time limit, are actively persecuted against, and you've shown us that compared to most things, we aren't particularly strong. if we just got stranded like that, we'd likely die.
>>40566172
case in point
>>
>>40566189
not to mention, we would likely have no idea where we were, where home was, or even the nearest settlement. hell we could be dropped on some fuckin island. I don't know how to build a raft out of palm trees. when you hear "cutebold" you don't expect "man-vs-wild, Iraq edition"
>>
>>40566084

That probably would have gone over not-too-badly, if you'd given us a chance to recover our party afterwards (and explicitly informed us that no, you weren't permanently splitting the party up unless we actively chose to not get them back).

And hadn't had the guys in the story threaten us with horrific fates when we were already keyed up and on edge over what was happening. We were already freaked out and having that, even if it made sense for the characters to do it, didn't help.

>>40566154

Given how little of a chance we'd have, and the odds that many of us wouldn't consider the possibility that we might even be allowed to recover and come back unless you told us so? We'd probably stick around and start doing things in the area you put us in, because that was where the narrative took us and where we figured you wanted us to be.
>>
>>40566189
But to not even try? I really can't fathom that.

But, eh. The quest is going to continue as it has. Thanks for your readership up to this point, but if you can't handle that kind of thing - tonal shifts, stakes, possible damage/loss, I suggest you bail out now, and I sincerely thank you for playing along till now.

As for me, I'm going to keep running. Despite everything, I enjoy it. I may not enjoy everything that comes with it, but there it is.

I didn't say that either, but if that's how you choose to take it, there's nothing I'm going to be able to say to change your mind anyhow. I am going to compromise, but here's a thought: maybe if you want to have low-level adventures, maybe don't go about trying to mess with poacher nets or things that are obviously dangerous if you don't like the idea of getting in over your heads.

And I never once claimed to be nice.
>>
>>40566234

>>40566234
>But to not even try? I really can't fathom that.
Sure, we're about a month old, given how we've been acting, I'm asuming we're about 15 in human years, let's see you take a fifteen year old kid, give em a knife, dump em in the middle of africa, and tell them to get home, and find there friends who have been scattered, and you have no idea where they are. see how they do.
>>40566299
"poacher" typically doesn't mean "enslaves sentient creatures, and has a large ogre-like shapeshifter with them" we were expecting something more akin to bandits, not the hulk meets the skrull
>>
>>40566299

So, stop trying to adventure, try new things, and investigate strange occurrences? That's terrible.

To tell you honestly, it was mostly that that fight felt like something we were not even given a fair chance at. Over a single series of contested rolls that went poorly, you tried to enslave the entire party. That is bad.

If it had at least felt like we had been given a fair chance, there'd be a lot less griping.

You wake to the sound of thunder overhead, and the spattering of rain on the canopy. You moan softly, reaching across your stomach to grip your side. It burns horribly, and your opposite shoulder throbs in time with your pulse, sending waves of agony through you. You turn your head about, blinking in the darkness. You hear movement beside you and whimper, trying to rise, only to feel a scaled claw press you back into the ground.

"Rest. You're really not in good shape, and I don't have anything for the pain... I'm sorry." Djanna whispers softly as she settles down beside you. Nearby, you hear Nurrim murmuring in pain, and on your opposite side, you catch the scent of spices and fallen leaves, along with the soft sound of light snoring.

You blink slowly, your eyes focusing in the dark. Djanna, her scales slick with rain, eyes you with concern, her tail lashing slowly back and forth behind her. You shift, sitting despite her efforts to keep you down, and you whine softly. "Djanna... where are we..."

She frowns and shakes her head. "I don't know. We ran until we lost them, and just... Nurrim passed out. We had to stop. We're pretty deep in the woods, so I don't think anyone's going to find us. We should be safe here. For now, anyway." She shifts down beside you, leaning back against the bole of the tree and patting her lap. You lean over, shifting your head onto her thighs. She slowly runs her claws through your hair, and for the first time, you don't really feel capable of really enjoying it.

A long time passes in silence before you hear Emma stir, moaning softly. "My head..."

"You all right?" Djanna reaches out, gently taking the kitsune's hand in hers. Emma nods slowly, scooting over in the dirt and laying her head on the dragon girl's shoulder, not speaking.

"You did a good job..." you whisper, lightning overhead briefly illuminating the forest before a peal of thunder roars after it.

"We all did." Djanna puts her other arm around the kitsune, still stroking your hair.

See if we can rouse Nurrim and ask her if she things it's safe to head to the glade. Find out her opinion on us using our healing magic or saving it.

If we cant get her to wake up definitely do this.

I rolled both of these. I think something dark awaits our cry. Something that howls amidst the storm, where the only light is that which speaks of death and fire.

You shake your head, shifting yourself from under Djanna's hand with a whimper. You turn to Nurrim's unconscious form, holding out your paws and swallowing as the movement sends a spike of pain down your back. You close your eyes and focus, trying to feel the warmth of the sun course through you, just as you did when you healed your father. Just as you did when you healed the skinny man.

Nothing happens.

You whimper, stretching your hands further toward her, before you finally just grab her by her collar and shake her lightly. "Nurrim... Nurrim! C'mon, we gotta go.. you gotta get up and take us home! C'mon, wake up! Please..."

"Nadia, c'mon. Let her sleep. We've all been through a lot. we should all rest while we can. I can stand guard, you just settle in and-"

You shake your head and whine, shaking the kitsune harder. "But what if they come and we have to run again? What if we can't get her up in time!? I won't leave anyone behind... not ever..." You feel tears falling from your eyes, but in the rain, they are invisible.

Emma slides over Djanna's lap and presses against your back, resting her forehead against the back of your neck. "If that happens, I'm not worried. I know you'll save us. I know you'll do everything you can. That's what you promised, right? So you shouldn't worry either."

You whimper and slowly let the elder woman settle back against the tree, slumping where you sit with your hands in your lap.

"So please... get some rest? For me?"

"That would be for the best." Djanna rose to her feet, shaking her tail out and looking about. "Emma, keep an eye on her. Would you?" The younger girl nods as Djanna slips out into the woods. You whine softly and Emma leans against the side you're not injured on, nestling her head against your cheek.

"Are you all right? I mean... I know you're hurt, but..."

Anons are inherently desperate and superstitious. That also have an inability to tell when a good roll is merely a trick of the dice gods to fool them into causing further misfortune to themselves.

You smile and lightly butt your head against hers. "It'll be fine. I promise. You're exactly right: Whenever you're in trouble, I'll be there."

She nods and moves against you, and you wince. You're so... so sore. There's no words, really. Even the light foxgirl seems to be made of thorns as she curls in your lap, even as she does her best to avoid the bruise on your side. She whimpers softly and runs her fingertips gently over it, up to your shoulder, jerking her hand back as you growl lightly in pain. "M'sorry... I just... Nadia, I'm sorry I couldn't help you." She frowns, resting her head against your chest.

You don't even have the strength to question it, just laying back and cradling her. There's nothing she could have done. She holds to you closely, the both of you listening to the rain together, the thunder having drifted into the distance, each rumble sounding from further away. Djanna returns a few minutes later, approaching slowly and quietly, crouched low. She settles down beside you, something small and furry held in her lap. "Here. It's not much, but I managed to sneak up on it while I was patrolling."

She hands the small, furry creature to you. It's still, dead, but the flesh is still warm. You whine softly, shifting Emma aside as you look down at it in the darkness. The fur is still intact, and if you weren't in such a sorry state there's no way you'd even consider it... but using your claws, you shear off a bit of the fluff and take a bite of the flesh, chewing quietly before swallowing. You shudder and take another bite, eating as much as you can, until the ache in your flesh subsides. You drop what remains of the body, wiping your lips with the back of your hand.

Your hunger sated, your wounds slowly healing, you feel your eyes growing heavy once more. Djanna curls against you, Emma nuzzles up under your chin, and as the storm slows to cessation, sleep takes the three of you.

I don't quite get what happened, but if it's dealt with it I'm fine.
wait, that hammer arguemnt counts as a shitstorm too, right?
>>
>>40570342
Not by my metric. That was just anon's being vocal about what they wanted. It didn't come from a position of moral outcry, more very specific ideas of what they wanted to see happen.

To me, a shitstorm involves vitriol. Betrayal, negativity, etc. With the dice argument, there was that. With the hammer argument, things got heated, but not to a great extent.
