You are the first to rise, the dull ache in your shoulder lessened though it still seems to grind a bit when you try to move it. You hiss, pressing your palm to your collarbone, fingers gently probing at the injured flesh between arm and torso.

Djanna stares out into the woods, back to the tree, with a thousand-yard stare. She looks exhausted, but no less alert. Emma sleeps gently, curled in your lap. Nurrim, having heard you stir, wakes with a start.

"Where are we!?" She moves to stand, trying to jump to her feet. She gives a yelp, quickly muffled when she claps a hand to her mouth, and falls back against the base of the trunk. A new wave of red washes from around the broken shaft in her breast, staining her bindings further. Djanna frowns, crawling over to her.

"Don't move so suddenly..." the dragon girl whispers, her voice raw and quiet. "If you lose much more blood, I... I don't know if you can make it..."

Nurrim pants and nods, settling back and letting Djanna worry over her. The dragon girl peels back the bindings, giving a soft whimper before binding her back up, trying to avoid the wound.

"Nnn... what's going on?" Emma whines softly, rubbing her eyes with her palm. She looks up at you, blinking herself to wakefulness, then looking between Djanna and her sister. "Oh... r-right..."

"Nadia..." Djanna turns to you, trying to wipe the blood from her claws on the moss of the tree. "Nurrim's in bad shape. I don't think this is something I can take care of. I think we need to consider our next move, but it's not safe to stay in one place for two long. I don't know if they're tracking us, but it would be best if we didn't stick around to find out."

Gotta stay hidden from outsiders, not like the village was particularly friendly last time as it was and we're in no shape to threaten them into cooperation right now.

Might be worth thinking sunny thoughts and trying to cop a heal on Nurrim or ourselves again now that we're rested up.

Should we make a stretcher for Nurrim? Seems like after all of this we should make some walking sticks that could double for poles for a stretcher. Would come in handy the rate we get busted up.

How about the number of dice rolled for each character, is it 1 each now?

You roll for the party, I roll for the mooks. DC adjusted by difficulty of encounter.

"We should head to the glade for now. We can't just leave Nurrim's home behind, right?" Emma rises out of your lap and you rise slowly, holding your side. Djanna helps Nurrim to her feet, supporting the older girl on her shoulder.

"In the end, we should leave anyway. If they're poaching for monsters, we're not safe here." Nurrim pants heavily, leaning on Djanna. "If I'm being honest, this hasn't been home in a long time. I just-"

"There's going to be time to talk later. We need to move." Djanna carefully readjusts Nurrim's weight and sets off a few steps ahead, before looking back at you with a stifled yawn. "Nadia... will you take the lead? I'm not sure which way the glade is from here..."

You nod and move to the forefront of the group, Emma falling in behind you, and Djanna bringing up the rear with Nurrim. You move slowly through the woods, following the scent of smoked meat and charred wood. Eventually, you come on the glade once more, the rack that Nurrim had constructed stil over the muddy remains of the smokefire. The flesh is still moderately uncooked, and once securing your friends inside the domain, you return and bring in enough to sate your ravenous hunger.
>>
>>40598138
"So... what now? We could go back to the village..." Djanna says as she sets the bone of her owlbear haunch aside, turning to face the rest of you. You snap the bone in your hand and suck at the marrow, while Emma worries at hers with her tiny teeth, lacking the strength to break it apart on her own. Nurrim has barely touched hers, her pallor having become somewhat worrisome. She's sweating and breathing heavily. You whine softly, your ears falling.

"I don't know if they'd help us, though." You turn to the dragon. "I can maybe try to heal her again, but I don't know. If it didn't work the first time, then maybe it won't this time? Maybe Yra's mad at me or something..." You mutter the last, looking at the floor. You don't know what you might have done, but even so, the idea of somebody being upset with you doesn't sit well.

"What about the bottled life?" Emma looks at the two of you, frowning thoughtfully. "We do have the two left."

>>40598187
Dice gods say not likely.

But either way I remember that the second time we healed YRA commanded us to clear the Czarina's tower.
The third was spent on some crooks.
The fourth was spent on something. or it was that failed heal back then? Either way, we have spent our healing without fulfilling the wishes of YRA inbetween.
I fully expect us to need to go on a HOLY QUESTâ„¢ to show that we are worth y of his grace.

And sorry I missed this.

I'm still using a modified DOS system. If you don't get the DC, it doesn't work. If you beat the DC, then I take into account how much you beat it by to figure out how well it works.

Case in point, DC here was 50. You beat it by 5, so you're going to heal Nurrim to a point where she's not in immediate threat of passing out/shock and it's going to work the arrow out enough where a mundane healing check could, potentially, remove it safely.

If you'd beaten it by ten, the arrow's out and the wound's sealed. By 20, she's sore, but in good shape. 30, she's in perfect health. 40 or a crit? Potential temp buffs.

And, like decided earlier, the more you do something, the better you get at it.
>>
>>40598351
Yra is getting sick of our shit.
>>
Well, look guys. Remember that fresh kills can boost a Monster's natural healing to higher levels.
We can go hunting for something fresh and feel it to Nurrim to get her healing going and stabilize her to be able to move her, if we don't want to use one of the bottled lives.
Remember, these are actual lives we're talking about here. We can't get more without sacrificing another person.
>>

>>
>>40598447
Well, hey, you happen to know where you can find some hunters!
>>

The potion use was if the healing didn't work at all. Since we've managed to stabilise her we can go heal her with meat instead of a potion, yeah

>>

No, he's got a point. The hunters are the kind of people that would kill a person just to get a high value commodity like a life potion. They might have some for emergencies. They're the kind of people we would need to find and kill to get a life potion, or the alchemists they do business with.

"I'll try healing her again." You add your bone to the pile by Djanna and rise, moving over to Nurrim. She opens an eye, looking up at you with a forced smile.

"Hey. S-sorry. I know I must look horrible right now. Not exactly being a g-gracious host..."

You whine. You hesitate a moment and reach out, patting her head. "It's fine. We're gonna take care of you. Okay?" She nods and settles back against the tree, closing her eyes. "That's nice, Nadia. I'm just... gonna rest for a bit."

You whimper and pull back, levelling your hands at her. The sun beats down into the glade, and for a moment seems to shine just a bit brighter on Nurrim's face. You hear a strange sort of sucking sound, and the shaft buried in her chest wiggles just a bit, inching out of the wound. Just as soon as the moment began, it ends, and Nurrim's breath comes just a little easier.

You take a step back and fall into a cross-legged sit, tail wiggling as you rest your palms on your knees, smiling despite yourself. She's still in pretty bad shape, but you helped her. You did what you could, anyway. Djanna crosses to the elder kitsune, crouching down in front of her with a pensive frown, checking her over without touching her. "I think I might be able to get the arrow out."

"Let her rest for now..." Emma walks past you, reaching out and brushing the back of her hand against her sister's cheek softly. "We need to talk about what we're doing."

Djanna nods, turning to face the two of you and taking a seat beside Nurrim. "She's right, Nadia. What's the plan?"

Don't do this. Their mooks outclass us let alone the druid mini boss that can 1 hit KO our entire party at once. We need to level up everyone by at least another evolution before attempting to deal with them.

>>
>>40598595
You spend the rest of the day relaxing in the glade, trying your best to figure out your next move. You could return to the Skyteeth. Maybe Maya and her troop would help you out. The village was on the way. If you needed help... but then again, they could have sent the hunters in the first place. They didn't seem to dress the same, though, so maybe not. You whine softly, rubbing your temples. Emma tends to her sister, mopping her brow with a damp rag, as Djanna paces the perimeter anxiously, her tail swaying in thought.

Eventually, the mid afternoon heat warming you to your core, you curl up in the shade of a tree into a fitful slumber.

============================

The bell above the door rings as you step into the shop, the hooded figure behind the counter saying nothing as they drum their heavy-ringed fingers on the counter. Racks of weapons and armor line the floor and walls, barrels of swords and spears, and heavy shields hanging from the wall behind the counter.

"Well. About time you showed up. You love to keep usssss waiting, yesssss?" You can't make out anything inside the hood but for the gleaming of crimson eyes. The air is smokey and the ambience dark, but you're not afraid. There's a quiet sort of feel in here, something between sacred and uncomfortable.

"Waiting?" you tilt your head and the figure nods.

"Pick one and only one. And don't be all day about it. You aren't my only cussssssssstomer."

You're dimly aware of several other shadows - what you had taken for mere tricks of the light - drifting forlornly between the racks.

Yes, this is an Evo vote.
No, this is not for a form evo.
No, there will be no more backsies.

You walk along the racks of weapons, moving past the armors and ignoring the shields completely. You move amongst the racks, finally settling on a heavy, two-handed war mallet. You heft it from its cradle, and though it's unbelievably heavy, it just feels... right... in your hands. Like you could knock down any foe in front of you, cleaving a path between yourself and whatever it is you want to reach. You smile to yourself a bit, a strange manic sensation in your chest. You feel just a touch of what you felt, attacking the axe-wielding hunter. The joy of overcoming adversity, the pure rush of adrenaline and power.

The scene shifts, and you're standing on a shapeless plain, the robed shopkeeper looking on from a distance. Shambling monstrosities, cloaked in shadow, rush toward you. You don't think, but react: you spin, bringing the hammer into the beast's side, shattering it into aether as you rush past it, using your momentum to carry you forward. The one behind it brings a massive fist down, slamming it into the earth before you. You leap up on the monster's hand, charging up its arm and driving the hammer into its skull, leaping off of it's shoulder before it dissipates into nothing.

You leap higher and further than you should be able to, looking down at the final creature. It looks up at you with a snarl of challenge. You begin your descent, screaming out a roar of challenge as you bear your fangs. You fall like a meteor, driving the hammer - and the beast - into the earth so hard that both crack. You pant heavily as the monster disperses, the burning in your muscles a familiar, beautiful agony.

"Then thisssss isssss what you want, yesssss?"

WILL YOU EVOLVE: HAMMERING FISTS
By sacrificing defensive power, you increase mobility and the force of your blows.

Dude, Nadia isn't so dumb as to just punch rocks.
Plate armour isn't a perfect defence, there are holes all over the place to enable its freedom of movement. Nadia would be more than capable of aiming her strikes at these weakpoints and could more than likely rip into them with her claws.

On top of that plate armour ain't gonna help you if someone lands a blow on your helmet hard enough to give you concussion. Not to mention that unless the armour is designed to restrict limbs and heads moving in ways that aren't good for the joints she can just crunk them.

Also, muay thai kickboxing: part of the training involves smashing their limbs against hard shit to create microfractures in the bones that heal and make it more resistant to future breaking. There's plenty of biological precedent for having tough critters even before you entertain the notion of fantastical elements.

You wake from your dream with a start and a snort, shaking your head until your hair sticks out every which way. You rise to your feet and stretch out, and- hey! Your arm!

You look down to find your wounds healed, the bruises gone and even the grinding of bone-on-bone is replaced by the smooth motion of muscle and sinew moving in concert. You clench your fists and they too seem harder. Larger. You feel incredible! You bounce on the balls of your seat in the late afternoon sun. You even feel like the fur on your knees, shoulders, etc has gotten a bit thicker.

"Nadia, did you grow!?"

You turn to address Djanna as she walks toward you, carrying another chunk of owlbear, and your ears flatten. She seems taller... or maybe you're shorter. You can't put a finger on it either, but her horns seem a bit sharper, her hair now reaches just past her shoulders, brilliant platinum blonde. Her claws seem shorter, her fingers more slender and dextrous. Her scales have darkened to a near-black shade of blue. You weren't sleeping that long, were-

That's when you realize that what you thought was the afternoon sun is, in fact, early morning. You whine gently. How!?

"You were sleeping so deeply, I didn't want to bother you. There was some movement near the glade, but we managed to bring in the last of the meat and take down the fur. I'm sure I didn't do it well enough to leave no traces, but just maybe it'll look like we left in a hurry... here. Breakfast."

>>
>>40600907
She offers you the bit of meat with a smile. You take it and flop back onto your rump with a huff, tearing into it with ravenous hunger. Djanna settles beside you, pulling her knees up to her chest, her tail swaying back and forth gently. It seems to have gotten longer as well, the barest hints of a fan perking up near the tip.

"So have you had some time to consider it? What are we doing? The longer we stay here, the worse off we're going to be I think. If they find the glade, maybe they'll even be able to find the domain. Then..." she doesn't finish the thought. You swallow the flesh in your mouth and wipe off your mouth on your arm. Across the clearing, covered in one of the furs, Emma sleeps curled up beside Nurrim, still as small as the day you met her.

>Hunt the hunters. You feel stronger. Make them pay.

I don't see how the target being evil has anything to do with the strength of its chainmail, but that aside, chainmail would be hard pressed to withstanding a piercing attack with the strength of 'hammer blows' behind it.

>victim won't be just sitting around
Sure, but they'll have on the whole a lot less experience combating people skilled in unarmed fighting. If you match nadia with a knight of 'equal level' her dexterity will no doubt be far better and more than capable of letting her land blows to weakpoints with consistency.

Old man posting. I remember the days when you had to struggle to defeat a boss. If you lost, it was either game over, or you had to do over the entire stage. For our younger audience, I would like to say this: this is not a videogame. This is a forum RP. Lotus isn't going to deliberately murder anyone or anything unless the plot calls for it, or we screw up THAT badly. Even then, it is okay to lose. He'll just put us on a bus (or a slave ship).

>To show mammaa evil isn't all that bad!
>Because we failed the roll in the acid whatever and burn scars kobold isn't treated like the cute little pup she is
>Molded by the darkness
Why do you arouse my amorousness anon? WHY?!

You flail in the acid, leg pumping, claws swiping. There. You feel something inside you, something wonderful and pure and - PAIN! Agony lances from every part of your body simultaneously, straight to your soul.
You spasm in pain for a long, long time, or no time at all, all you know is that eventually the pain fades away and you can think clearer, and you bring forth that light you never let go and release it into the tarslime.
Then the void.

The next few weeks were what you would tell your children as the crucible in which you were reforged. Your skin teared anew every time you moved, to not dream was to live in paralyzing pain. But still you moved. You walked until you fell into sleep. You ran into you fell into sleep. You fought until you could do so without giving into sleep. Eventually the pain faded away to your peripheries, always there but never intruding. Almost like a close friend.

And when the light came back that fateful day when you healed your father... When your mother took up your light as a sign from Yra himself, the only way that you knew how to stop her was to defy her, in totality.
In front of the entire Warren you swore against Yra himself and swore yourself to Gra instead. Cutting his symbol over the golden lines in your palm. You hoped that this would stop her cold, but she instead denounced you and had you driven from the warren.
Your only condolence is that Djanna, the dragon's only child, has come with you.

You know not what to do with your new freedom from the warren but Djanna says that there is a friend in the human city, Dvotysk, that could help you.
With nothing else to stop you and nowhere else to go, you set off to find your way in this once-bright world that is rapidly turn dark.
>>
>>40600933
"We should head for home. We... kind of took a bigger bite than we could chew, I think." Djanna frowns softly, but nods. "We'll take Nurrim with us, if she'll go. She can't just stay here on her own."

"You think she'll want to leave? I mean, this is her home, isn't it?"

"Nadia, look around. It's just some woods. Didn't you say home is where your family is?"

"But her rocks..."

"They're just rocks too!"

"Actually... they're grave markers." Nurrim's voice sounds raspy, but better than it did the night before. You both look up at her as she stirs, her left arm around Emma, fingers moving through her hair lightly. She smiles softly, regarding the two of you. "Look at you... such strong, beautiful young creatures already."

She reminds you of one of the old aunties from the warrens, and you're not sure you like it. The auntie was always sad when she spoke, with a far-off look in her eyes. "What's a grave?"

"When the man in white came, and took my family away from me, I couldn't just leave them there on the ground, so I buried them. The stones... that's where they're resting. That's why I asked Emma to come with me to greet them. A grave is where you put somebody to rest when they've died."

Your eyes widen and you whine softly. "So... so your mama and papa... and your littermates..."

She nods with a sad smile, looking down at the gently slumbering kitsune on her chest. "This little one... and you and Djanna... are all I have left. When I'm gone..."

No. No no no no no!

You pass Djanna the rest of your owlbear and rise, bounding over to where the packs are stacked. You rip open the flap of Djanna's and rummage about until you come up with the carved box, pulling it open and drawing out one of the red bottles. You look at it, the semitransparent ruby liquid glittering in the sun. You look between her and it, and give it a vigorous shake. The transparent fluid becomes cloudy before going fully opaque, and you bound over to her.
>>
>>40601893
"What are you do-" You rip the stopper out of the bottle and push it into Nurrim's mouth, tipping the vial upright. In shock, the elder kitsune tries to pull away but finds herself stuck against the tree, and soon enough swallows as a preferable alternative to choking or passing out. Djanna has crossed to follow you, and Emma has snapped awake at the disturbance.

"What's going on!?" The small kitsune looks up at Nurrim, then at you, and smiles brightly. "Thank you..." she whispers, hugging your leg tightly as the rest of the liquid vanishes down Nurrim's throat. You pull the vial back and she coughs violently, near retching, before with a moan she passes out against the tree, panting hard. Her flesh begins to knit around the arrowhead, and Djanna moves to quickly pull it free, a small spray of blood coming with it. Emma yelps, looking at the dragon girl accusingly.

"She'll heal... I think." Djanna assures Emma, tossing the arrow away. You think you note a short scrawl of blue ink on the shaft, terminating where it's snapped off.

=====================================

You sit outside, facing the stones, tail slowly swaying back and forth. Graves, huh? Three hundred years ago, these rocks were people. Well, kind of. A mother and father, brothers and sisters. You reach out gently and stroke one of the big rocks. What was she like? Nurrim had said she was kind... gentle. Emma had said her father was hard, but fair... that he wanted the world not to get the better of her. Just that alone wasn't much to go on, though.

"Are you all right, Nadia?" The younger kitsune moves to kneel beside you, resting her hands in her lap, leaning forward and looking over at you. "You've been hour here for a while. Nurrim's awake. We can leave any time you like."

"I was just thinkin'..." you mutter, pulling your hand back. "M'sorry about your folks..."

She shakes her head softly, her tailtips flicking lightly. "It's all right. I don't remember them very well... and I think they're at peace, otherwise they'd be up and around, don't you think?" She grins softly, reaching out and laying her hand in yours. You give it a soft squeeze, and the girl practically throws herself against you, holding your arm. You can't help yourself, blushing slightly.

"Thank you thank you thank you for using a potion on Nurrim. I was so worried about her, but I.. I didn't want to worry you so I was trying to be calm about it, and... I'm just... thank you!" She looks up at you, blushing likewise. She gives a soft whine, leans up and pecks your lips softly, like Nurrim had kissed hers.

You're stunned for a moment before you gather the girl up in your arms and give her a squeeze. She laughs softly, burying her face in your chest.

"If you two are done?" Djanna steps through the domain, her pack on her back. Nurrim follows her a moment later, carrying a makeshift pack of her own.

"Hold on a second! Djanna, where's that arrow?"

"Huh? The one that hit Nurrim? I tossed it, it should still be in the domain. Why?"

You bound past her without another word, skipping past the barrier and quickly over to where she'd been resting. Her chests sit open, mostly empty, and a few of her skins are missing. You find the arrow and return to the clearing, holding it out to the elder girl. She takes it from you curiously, turning it to the light. She frowns. "What's this?"

You shake your head with a shrug. "I don't know. I just noticed it when Djanna pulled it out of you. Think it's... like... a spell or something? Or poison!?"

"Nadia, calm down. If it was poison, I'd be feeling it still. If it was magic... well, I wouldn't know..." she runs a finger over the script, biting her lip lightly. "It's not a language I recognize, anyway. That's all I know..."

You nod, ears flattening back. Emma steps up between you, head tilted slightly. "Is it dangerous?"

"If it was enchanted, the spell is probably spent now." Nurrim slides the arrow into her pack. Djanna looks confused. "Enchanted. There's a way to put magic into things, so that it works a couple of times, or you can save it for later. It's a long process, but it's supposed to be very useful."

"Can you do that with healing?" She asks, and Nurrim shakes her head.

"I wouldn't know. Magic can't heal like that." she says as you four start making your way out of the clearing.

You follow Nurrim's direction, and slip off the main trail along the game paths, moving stealthily through the woods. You don't notice anything pursuing you: no human footsteps, no creak of leather, no rattle of weapons. The path widens out ahead, and sitting in the center of it you notice a small feline creature.

Lanky limbs, black fur, golden eyes.

You stop short, a whine in your throat. Nurrim moves up behind you, and Djanna steps to your side. You feel Emma cling to your back. Every instinct you have is telling you to give chase to it, but you know those eyes. There is malice there. Something terribly inhuman, and most definitely not feline.

Malachi - you think that was the name - regards you cooly, eyes flicking between the four of you as his tail twitches behind him. He hasn't moved, sitting calmly in the center of the path. Nurrim lets her hand fall to her pack, reaching for something inside. You feel Emma's hand on your dagger, and feel the heat beginning to flow from Djanna's mouth. The three of them hold, seemingly waiting for your lead.

"Why... why are you doing this?" you ask, trying to keep your voice from trembling. You feel the heat from Djanna's breath gathering. It's hotter... much hotter than you recall it in the Wanderer's Tomb. Nurrim has drawn the arrow from her pack, holding it if to stab, and Emma has slid your dagger from your belt.

"Why?" The voice that comes from the cat is quiet, soft. A bare hint of a chuckle in it. The creature's maw doesn't move, but you hear the speech plain as day. "I need skins, child. They are lovely things, but their power only lasts for so short a time. Nillivelle demands her tribute, after all." The tail flicks, and the cat lazily licks at his paw, eyes never leaving yours. "And the gifts that come of obedience are not to be disdained."

Skins? Oh... oh no. You feel a shudder run up your spine. Emma slowly shifts a shoulder in front of you, almost blocking your view of Malachi.

You sniff the air. You smell the stink of the cat... and dragon... and other beasts whose odors you don't recognize, all coming from the small, seemingly weak creature before you. You smell leather in the distance, close but not adjacent.

"That's horrible! Why would you do that!?" You yelp, trying to keep your voice quiet.

"Oh, sweet child, it's not so bad? After all... you aren't people."

Djanna snarls and you feel her inhale, ready to spill out a blast of plasma at the creature. You hear Emma muttering behind you.

"But."

Djanna stops short, but you hear Emma complete her spell.

"You are cubs. Weak. Pathetic. Your skins will not serve yet. No challenge in it. No glory. Nellivelle will be displeased if I offer her to you now. Leave. Grow strong, and when you become fiends worth felling, then I will come and offer your skulls upon her altar."

Malachi rises, stretches, and turns his back to you, loping toward the treeline.

>>
>>40604689

Have you perhaps heard of a BOSS character?
>>
>>40604712

A boss is something you can fight against and have a chance of winning. Malachi would just kill us all because he wasn't built to be defeated. Anyway, at least Lotus is having him do the tried and true "You aren't worth my time" bullshit so that the character can fuck the hell off, hopefully forever.

>>40604764
He's not built to be defeated YET. haven't you ever heard of a recurring villain? we were SUPPOSED to meat him now so we know he's out there, and he'll become a challenging opponent at some point down the road. there's no need to whine about every little thing and say it's all lotus's fault.

To be fair, at least Malachi didn't beat us and our friends within an inch of our lives, gloat about his superiority, threaten to do terrible things to our friends while we looked on helplessly, and... On second thought, I got nothing.

Lotus already said ending it on a single bad roll was a mistake and that he was pushing too hard to give us a temporary bad end for story advancement. He'll do better in the future. Granted, having Malachi show up to mock us for our inferiority in the meantime was a terrible decision, but after this, he'll presumably be fucking off for a while.
