Welcome to Academy City. The time is evening, the weather is rusty, and the date is January 9.

You are Kyril Torikov, Level 3 Telekinetic ‘superhero’ and you had just thwarted a bank robbery. It was a heroic thing to do. Your methods on the other hand could leave something to be desired. The room before the vault was full corpses now but at least the last one had finally stopped twitching. You had been creative, maybe unnecessarily cruel, with him. One of the thugs had hefted a baseball bat against you. It was a bat that had broken and splintered from a blow with your head. You had taken that bat shoved it through their left eye socket despite the mewling of surrender. The smells was grating but it affirmed one thing. You had come out on top. All was as it should be.

The whole fight, if it could be called that, had lasted less than five minutes. It had taken another three before your diminutive superior to arrive. Her smile was less than pleased. You weren’t sure why. Nayuta had told you to try and not shoot everyone and you succeeded. In fact, the hostages themselves leapt in front of their captors’ guns for your benefit of their own accord. It was a worthy sacrifice, bringing meaning to their existence as mere chattel. Their captors at least had some fight in them, hopelessly outmatched as they were. She inspected the scene grimly without a wasted movement before stalking up towards you. Her expression was clear, a chastisement was coming. You wanted to cut her off, even when she was your superior. If she was displeased she should have done it herself. Then another thought struck you,

It was laughable that the smaller, younger girl was your superior. If it weren’t for her trick then she was no match for you. It was a trick that you were going to figure out. Then you were going to show her who really was the superior, especially when she had convenient handholds when you finally forced yourself on her. That last thought brought it everything to a screeching halt.

Did you seriously just consider that?

“Nii-chan?”

You stiffened, warring with the impulse to just act and the realisation that this was not normal. There was a horror that lurked somewhere in the back of your head. There had to be. This, all of this, wasn’t who you were. It wasn’t.

Nayuta’s tiny hand pulled you along silently as you walked out after her. Maybe she saw, or worse, maybe she knew. The silence dragged on. Your mind was warring with itself. It was good that she was taking you somewhere private. In isolation, no one would hear her scream. You were finally sat down in a table. Across from you, Nayuta spoke,

“It’s a side effect I think.”

Of what, you wanted to know but you were really too preoccupied to keep those thoughts as thoughts and not action.

“I should have known better than to trust a hackjob to code the behavioural scripts,” she continued, “You’ve probably realised it now, if no one has told you before.”

You recalled dimly a conversation you had had with Asuka once. Nayuta tapped the front of your helmet.

“You know where VERDICT is right nii-chan?”

She didn’t need to spell it out for you. The VERDICT OS was obviously affecting you.

“The easiest solution is simply to uninstall the CADME but then it probably was the most effective pieces of software you’ve had so far. If you don’t want it removed, we’re going to have to find a real neurosurgeon.”

“I might know one.”

You found it difficult to convey thoughts through speech, sounding more like a series of growling rather than words. It annoyed you. You really didn’t see why you needed one though. Nayuta tapped the front of your helmet twice this time. You must have voiced the thought.

“This here, out front, this is where you are. It’s what makes Kyril, well, Kyril. That’s the clever part, the introspective part, the home of your consciousness. Now what I forgot to put on your diagram nii-chan, is the where exactly VERDICT lives. It shares a space with the part that keeps you living and breathing, sensing and responding. Back there your memories are stored, malleable as they are, and where your emotions are born. Behind that near inaccessible curtain that separates your consciousness and subconscious, that is where VERDICT is installed. Have you never wondered why you felt nothing when you terminate Code M except maybe a sense of job well done?”

She paused for breath. Or maybe it was for your benefit.

“In fact, I can only guess that you’ve begun to notice because you’ve been able to turn off the VERDICT OS. So first things first, turn it off nii-chan. Turn off the VERDICT OS. Before it turns off your ability to feel.”

You snarled at the order. Once again she was deciding things for you. It annoyed you. You were going to follow the order for now. With a bit of focus and a gnashing of teeth, the VERDICT OS seemed to click off and you flopped forward on to the table. Of course with another thought you brought the damn thing back on, though you held off on activating the CADME. Nayuta smiled.

“Alright nii-chan, you said something about knowing a neurosurgeon?”

You did. Her name was Nunotaba but you weren’t sure it was a good idea to go through official channels. After all, she had, in her own words, skipped town. You don’t know what kind of trouble that would bring.

The time is morning, the weather is crisp, and the date is now January 10.

Nayuta had practically ordered you home for some rest while she dealt with the aftermath of the botched bank robbery. The official statement given by the local news was that a few hostages had lost their lives before Judgement could arrive on the scene. It was a lie you could live with. You had decided that it was a better idea to handle the Nunotaba situation yourself. At least for now you would since you may needed Nayuta later. That meant that after breakfast you were headed to Sagara’s.

The difference was that this time you were wearing a cap and sunglasses. It was nice to finally be able to feel the weather on your skin. That and you weren’t stared at as much. Wearing sunglasses indoors was actually less conspicuous than the helmet too.

“Decided to show off your ugly mug to the world now?” Sagara greeted with humour.

The two of you were chatting in a secluded part of a gambling hall.

“Somehow, you’re not surprised,” you noted.

“Have to keep tabs on the rich and famous,” he tried to look innocent, “Just couldn’t help but notice that a familiar name showed up in Nagatenjouki’s latest System Scan. You never really did things by halves.”

“My secret to success,” you smiled, “You keep tabs on your ex?”

“No because one, it’s impossible, and two, it’s creepy and rude.”

“I meant your first one.”

“Oh, of course I do, it isn’t really hard when she might have a thing for Touma.”

“Wait what? Seriously?”

“I don’t actually know what she sees in him,” he admitted.

“I meant Nunotaba,” you sighed.

“She’s probably sipping margaritas in the Caribbean or something. Of course we’ll need a good reason to bother her.”

“And you have?”

“Always,” he smirked, “Question is, how much you are going to pay me to do it because as it happens I do have a small problem. Or you could just owe me a favour for later.”

>>
“Not even if it was for my continued mental and physical well-being?”

“She honestly wouldn’t care so I have to go the extra mile.”

“Then it’s good for you that I’m very good at making problems go away.”
Both of you shared a laugh.

“You see the news?”

“I made the news.”

“Oh right, keep forgetting that you’re ‘Judgement’ as well.”

“So you want me to rob a bank,” you concluded, “sounds easy enough.”

“No actually. I need you to go after the guy who organised the botched bank jobs.”

That intrigued you.

“The one you stopped was probably the one best outcome, the others had been,” he paused to search for a word, “sloppy. I’ve got a butcher’s bill bigger than the thing he had been trying to steal in the first place.”

You whistled.

“Ironically it’s something Riko’s stole two, three days ago.

“It must really be some hot merch.”

“Whatever it is I don’t care, this guy’s been leaving a trail of bodies and bragging about it. None of the guys I sent after him have come back yet so we might have a grade A psycho on our hands.”

“Where do you want me to start?”

“Well I was hoping you could use your Judgement. Otherwise I’m sure I could get you a spot in one of Riko’s private auctions. She loves to show off her loot and making money off of it is a nice bonus.”

“I really don’t think she’ll tell me more.”

“Why not just crash her auction then? That’ll get her talking for sure. Not to mention, that’s what her nemesis would do.”

“She was serious about that?”

“To the fucking hilt.”

He laughed as if it was some kind of joke. That aside, your next step was to,

“I’ll see what Riko’s up to then,” you told him.

The time is just after lunch, the weather is just right, and the date remains unchanged.

It had taken a while to scope out the venue but it was pretty exposed for a hotel conference room. Inside the rich and powerful sat and tossed money at the most notorious thief in the world. Your arrival was going to be fashionably late. Speaking of fashion, you had ditched what Last Order had called the ‘Aiden Pearce reject’ look and slipped on your suit. Coupled with the helmet, you gave off a more sophisticated look. At least you hoped so.

The reason you weren’t fashionably early was because Lady Kudou had finally finished fixing your car. Your Camarro was now basically indestructible or she would definitely buy you a new car. With a guarantee like that how could you not try to take advantage of it? You hit the ramp at the right speed, launching yourself off the top floor of the parking lot and landing straight through the window of the conference room. Despite the crashing, and screaming, neither you nor the Camarro was any worse for wear. You opened the door and stepped out. It seemed Riko was the one of the few who wasn’t screaming their heads off while running for the exit.

“VERDICT,” she greeted amusedly, “And here I was wondering who Sagara had given his spot too and why they were running late.”

You nodded at your ride.

“Traffic, you know how it is.”

Briefly, you tagged the location of Tadakuni and the WORST. You weren’t here to fight but you wanted to be ready just in case. Your goal was the find out who was after her due to an item she had recently acquired. Thus you proceeded to,

“Is this seat taken?” you asked Riko.

She just shook her head as you took dropped in to a seat. Your entrance had scared off most the majority of her patrons after all. On the flipside, there was less competition. As far as auctions went it was pretty strange. The items in question were never shown. Riko only gave a description of the item before moving on to bidding. It was only after the auction and after the money had been wired, that the item in question would be delivered. A few caught your attention but most of it was memorabilia.

“This one is a dedicated item from famous BD artist Heart-Under-Blade-sensei. It seems to have suffered some damage from reconstruction after a failed attempted at disposal but the original dédicace is still legible. Apparently its owner passed away under mysterious circumstances leading many theorists to suspect this item is cursed.”

It was fucking cursed alright, you thought bitterly. A brief bidding war followed.

“Now this last item is very hot indeed. I’ve personally managed to obtain a copy after much difficulty. This document is vital to the defence and integrity of this very City. Of course such is its power that I am unable to say its name until after the auction has been concluded. In fact, simply possessing this document is a guaranteed death sentence. That is how much it is coveted both by the City and many others. Now before we begin bidding, I ask that those not interested to leave the room. Questions?”

Interesting, you thought. You wondered how much the City would pay to have it returned. Chances were, this was also the item that she was being hunted for.

“Riko, your ex-boyfriend said that some psycho’s out to get you simply because you have it, this true.”

“Odds are good,” she answered vaguely, “any other questions?”

There were none. You supposed that it was the best you could hope for. Besides you needed the right kind of bait to draw out the killer thief. This was an opportunity too good to pass up. There wasn’t that many left though there was a persistent old man who bid in opposition to you. He seemed to hold a bit of a grudge as he stormed out after you outbid him. It seemed his pockets weren’t deep enough.

“Congratulations, you just won a worthless piece of DLC,” Tadakuni said.

He had sat himself in a seat next to you as the rest started filing out.

“I don’t actually want it,” you replied, “I’m just using it as bait. It’s a favour for Sagara.”

“That’s some real high quality bait then, I approve.”

“Must be real dumb of you if you don’t know what the fuck you just got yourself in to onii-sama,” WORST inserted herself in to the conversation.

“What’s the DLC stand for anyway?” you asked.

“Dossier lancier cancer,” Riko answered in perfect French, “And I don’t do refunds VERDICT.”

“Not even for you arch nemesis?” you pretended you understood the reference.

You really didn’t. Riko smiled that catlike smile of hers before the trio left the conference room. The valet wasn’t exactly enthusiastic to drive a car out of the fifth floor window while you went to settle the issue of damages with the hotel management. Of course, it would take a while before the bait drew the right kind of attention. Now it was a matter of setting the stage for the anticipated attack. The question was of who could help you prepare such a location.

The time is now sunset, the weather is cooling, and the date remains unchanged.

“Hah, you’re a real riot Pops.”

Kyouko was sharing a drink the office a ‘condemned’ warehouse. She had wanted it demolished and turned in to a park if it weren’t for the cost. With your style of fighting, if you could call it a style, she was banking on you doing half the job for her. Well, she wasn’t wrong. If you really cut loose you could do some serious damage. It wasn’t smart to bring down a building that you were currently in though. Not to mention that it’d require you activate CADME’s offensive mode. Nayuta had warned you that simply rebooting the VERDICT OS while under the influence of CADME was a crapshoot.

Anyway, you were just telling Kyouko about how you crashed Riko’s auction at Sagara’s suggestion. You were regaling her with tales of your past day or two. It was mostly aimed to entertain and pass the time.

“I can’t say you have the best plans but at least you have balls huh?” she continued, “Hopefully the farm will show up.”

The group that had hit the bank had been wearing animal masks, hence the name. There was surprising little information on this supposed new gang of crooks. Whoever they were, they were keeping their lips sealed. Prisoners were then a priority.

“Oh what? Now that’s just insulting.”

It seems they had arrived. They being the lone figure with a chicken mask on. Kyouko considered it insulting that whoever was backing them sent only one. You on the other hand were wary. Given that you were supposed to be a tactical weapon, you couldn’t discount the possibility that this was an enemy with comparable power.

“Go get ‘im Pops,” Kyouko pat your back.

Chickenshit cocked his head up towards you, producing a cassette player. He probably pushed play as you heard a stilted edit of cut up phrases,

“Please be advised, the following presentation is not suitable for minors.”

In his hand other hand was a hammer. It was an obvious weapon but it couldn’t be the only one on his person. Still you had to stick with your strengths, and right now, that was your telekinesis. The limiter disengaged and since you had been sitting it looked like nothing had happened. Cockhead took a step forward and you sent him more than two steps back. You blasted him through the far wall with but a thought.

“Like I said, insulting,” Kyouko sniffed, “even if he’s got the smack talk down.”

You dropped down to the empty warehouse floor to confirm your kill. Without proper control of your limbs you weren’t exactly mobile but it should be enough. The smoke and rubble twisted and Birdman was in your face again, his hammer came down on your helmet. You let him, wondering what sort of Ability his was. It was to no effect. Both of you managed to tilt your head in to confusion until you sent him in to another wall. This time her emerged unscathed. You tried to pin him down but for some reason it was like your Ability decided he was bigger than he looked.

Fowlface moved, this time drawing a knife with a free hand and closed. It had taken one step. From at least twenty odd metres away he took one step before ending up in front of you and was swing and stabbing at the same time. He figured that you wouldn’t be able to defend against two attacks at once. Both of them were aimed at weak points. Again, you blasted him away. It looked like ranged attacks didn’t work.

This was the first time you ever felt anything along your artificial arms. The space that it had entered was warped. As you followed through, your arm felt like it was being poked and prodded at random. That was probably his Ability, some kind of spatial distortion effect. It was weird that he hadn’t cut you in two already. Then again your Ability was interfering with his. From the looks of it both of you affected space, but in different ways. If you had felt his Ability, had he felt yours?

“C’mon Pops, swing those arms like you mean it.”

Of course you could hardly forget the peanut gallery. Poultryprick started circling you warily now. So it had been a close call huh? Well then you suppose you had another card to commit to the trick. You dashed in, right arm flying straight. He was going to duck under it with plenty of time to spare whilst you moved your left to intercept. You were banking on him doing his spatial distortion trick to avoid it. Therein lay your trap. Your left missed its mark as he closed to stabbing range with his knife. The stunwhip hidden in your right arm snaked out then and caught him around his lead arm as you delivered several hundred volts of electroshock therapy.

Avianasshole dropped like a sack of potatoes.

“Well, that was easy,” Kyouko remarked.

The tape recorder played another pre-recorded message,

“Assistance would be appreciated.”

As if on cue, a formless quicksilver blob dropped from the ceiling. Instead of splattering it assumed a lithe but undoubtedly deadly bipedal form. Goddamnit Kyouko.
