You are Giles, Master Thief, lover extraordinaire, and professional fighter.

Your job has taken another interesting turn, as you’ve now gone from escort to spymaster.

You made it back to where you left Marcy and Selene without a hitch..

After talking to Marcy for a while, the two of you got into the topic of your status as ‘master thief’. You figured it would be okay, considering Selene was asleep and Kuma already knows.

Except Selene wasn’t asleep… On the upside, she now thinks that you’re even cooler than before.

You capped off the night by telling tales of your exploits, which were appreciated right up to the point where everyone fell asleep.

For thousands of years, Fate’s course has been set. Now a storm lay on the horizon.
Will you steer the world clear, or plunge us all into the chaos to be wiped clean?

“Are we there yet?” Selene asks.
“Not yet kiddo” You say.

The four of you decided to change things up, so Marcy is riding with Kuma and you’re riding with Selene.

“Are we there yet?” Selene asks.
“No” You say again.

Selene is… a little impatient today. It might be the fact that you let her know that the journey is almost over. You should be reaching Searise today at some point, but…

“How ‘bout now?” Selene asks.
“We’re not there yet” You say.
Selene looks up at you a pouts angrily.
“You pouting is not going to make this go any faster” You say.

A full day has passed since you visited the general and let it slip to Selene that you’re the master thieves. Nothing of import has happened since then. You’re still waiting for word on whether you were successful on either of your fronts: the siege of Barrowlen and the diversion of the troops from Felldown.

“Are we there yet?” Selene asks.

Okay, you’re going to have to entertain this girl before she drives you insane.

She was surprised to find you petting her head. But she didn't seem to hate it.
>>
“No, but I’ll tell you what.” You say. “I’ll tell you a story to pass the time, and if you sit tight and keep quiet, I’ll show you a trick too. Okay?”
“Okay!” Selene replies, getting comfortable and looking up at you expectantly.

Alright then, which one to tell…

Well, you already told her how you got the Pheonix’s egg. Might as well work on finishing that set, with the… Aquila.

Yeah, fire’s done, might as well move on to water.

Without further ado, you begin your tale…

>[1/2]
>>
>>40603954
Holy hell, that's some serious auto-pilot he's got, if he was petting her for more than a few hours. Well, idle hands are the Devil's playthings, yes?
>>
You got the Aquila’s egg from a temple in Delemur, up north. Supposedly they were holding onto it and awaiting the day it would hatch.

Like the true gentleman you are, you decided to steal the egg and leave your calling card in its place. But not before leaving an ostrich egg that you painted to look like the Aquila’s egg on top of your card.

You almost wish you could’ve stuck around to see the looks on their faces both when the egg hatched, and when they cleared away the shells and saw your calling card.

Both must have been glorious.

Selene laughs at your little prank as you finish your story.

“Sooo?” She asks.
“Yes, you were good. I’ll teach you something” You say.

Selene bounces with glee. The question is, what to teach?

“Alrighty” You say, reaching into your cloak for a few things. “I am going to teach you one of the premier thief skills”
“Stealing?” She asks.
“No, stealing is a goal, not a skill” You say. “To be good at stealing, there are a number of things you must learn first"
“So what is it?” She asks.

You pull out a couple of locks, ranging from small and fragile to bulky and damn-near unbreakable. “I am going to teach you how to pick a lock” You say.

Smiley just clarified he doesn't do crits. Calm yourself.
>>
You begin, as with any lesson, by showing Selene the basics.

First, how to place her tools and which tools to use for what type of lock. Then you show her how to mess with the tumblers, and how to check if you’re doing it right.

You start by getting her to do one of the simpler locks you have on you, but after a while she still doesn’t have it, and she’s clearly starting to get frustrated.

“I can’t do it” She says.
“Nonsense” You reply. “It just takes patience. Of all the tricks you need to know, lockpicking is probably among the more difficult to learn and delicate to perform. But…” You take the lock from her and pop it open in a matter of seconds. “In time, you will have no need for keys, and no door will dare to bar your path.”

“But it’s haaaaaard” She says.
“Oh it is, believe me” You say. “There was a while where I actually found it easier to go and find the keys than I did to pick open the locks. It just takes practice”

You close the lock you just opened and hand it back to Selene, giving her a pat on the head. “Keep trying, and don’t get frustrated. Patience and focus is the key” You say.
“Right” She says.

“You sure you should be teaching her that kind of stuff?” Marcy asks.

“No, but that hasn’t-“
“Stopped you before, I know” She says. “Fourth time you’ve used that line, by the way”
“It’s a good line” You reply.
“I know, but it wears a bit thin after the second or third time” She says. “But seriously, you’re teaching the princess how to pick locks?”
“Yes” You say.
“Why?” She asks.

“Because it’ll come in handy” You reply. “Maybe I should teach you too. Then we could all be able to pick locks”
“Me as well?” Kuma asks.
“Well, sure… wait, you can’t pick locks?” You ask.
“No, it is not a part of my skills” Kuma says.

“huh…” You say. “Sorry, I guess I just kind of assumed you could”
“A fair assumption” She says. “There are many among my brethren who can”
“Don’t worry. It’s all the more reason why someone else needs to learn” You say. “Right Selene?”

No response. You look down and find her completely immersed in what she’s doing…

Well, you did say focus was the key.

“So, we should hit Searise soon” You say. “Anything you guys want to do when we get there?”
“Sleep in a bed” She says. “Preferably one that I don’t have to share with 3 other people”
“Aww, I thought you liked sharing” You say.

“I tolerate it” She says.
“Ouch Marcy” You say. “Is this how you treat your husband?”

She pauses, looking at you with a neutral expression. “I want a divorce” She says.
“B-but you can’t!” You say. “What about our dear Selene?”

*click*

“Haaaaaa hahahahaha! I got it!” Selene says. “Look papa, look! I got it! I got it!”
“Oh? Wow, you actually did get it. That was quick” You say.
“It would’ve been quicker if you guys weren’t distracting me!” She says, pointing a finger accusingly at Marcy.

“Whaaat, how is this my fault?” Marcy asks.
Selene sticks her tongue out at Marcy, then picks up another lock and starts ignoring everyone again.

You and Marcy look at each other and shrug.

“So aside from a bed, what do you want?” You ask.
“A chance to wash this dress?” She asks. “Or another dress… maybe something a bit more casual. If you’re up to more dress shopping… I mean, I wouldn’t mind if you weren’t…”

“I could probably just make you another one” You say. “It’d be easier for me”
“You would?” She asks. “I mean… if it’s not too much trouble…”

So Marcy wants a dress… that’s easy enough. That still doesn’t solve your problem…

“Well, if there isn't anything you want to do, I guess we’ll just head straight to the manor” You say.
“You don’t want to bum around town for a bit first?” Marcy asks.
“You’re welcome to do that, if you want” You say. “I need to talk to my father”

“Right” Marcy says. “We might as well just bum around for a bit then. Give you some privacy”
“Why?” You ask
“This seems like kind of a one-on-one sort of deal” She says. “Father and son stuff, you know?”

“That doesn’t mean you can’t come to the manor” You say “It’s pretty big, if you hadn’t noticed. I’d also rather not split the group again”

“What if I want to go bumming around town?” She asks.
“It’s probably not going to be as interesting as you think” You say. “Last time we were here it was a merchant hub. But since Melissa has likely converted her merchant fleet into a naval fleet, it’s probably a much less lively place”

“Oh…” Marcy says.

“So you should probably just skip the town, yeah?” You ask.
“Oh… fine” She says, crossing her arms and pouting.

You reach over and put a hand on her cheek. “Oh come on, there’ll be plenty of time to see Searise when our business at the manor is done, okay?”
“O-okay” She says.

You smile and withdraw your hand, turning back to Selene. “How’s it goin’ down there kiddo?” You ask.
“This one is harder” She says.
“It has more tumblers” You say. “Keep at it, you’ll get it eventually”

“I see the town” Kuma says.
“Oh?” You ask, looking up and ahead on the road. “Well, there it is”
“Finally, just a little further and I can rest my butt” Marcy says. “I prefer this over walking, but riding a horse does have its downside”

“It still beats walking, though” You say.
“Absolutely” She says. “But I might be sitting funny for a while”
“It’s not that bad” You say.
“You’re not me” She says. “You don’t know what my butt feels like”

It takes a second for both of you to realize what she said, and it gets quiet after that.

>[1/2]
>>
>>40608135
The rest of what little is left of the ride to Searise also passes in Silence…

On the upside, you don’t have to talk about Marcy’s butt anymore.

The town itself is quiet, as you expected. With most of the trade and commerce and liveliness coming from Melissa’s business, the town was bound to lose some of its spark when the fleet shipped out.

As such, finding a boat to take to the manor is not a difficult task, as there are several sitting idle on the shoreline.

The trip to the manor also passes in silence, with Selene being far too focused on mastering her new craft, Kuma being her usual self, and you and Marcy being far too put off by the subject of butts to say much.

You’re on the island and about halfway to the manor when someone calls out to you.

“That you Giles?” A familiar voice asks. It’s Kevin.
“Ahoy” You say. “What are you doing out here?”
“Out for a walk” He asks. “If you’re here, is Melissa back?”
“No, she’s still busy” You say.
“So why are you here?” He asks.
“Business” You say.

“Is Father in the manor?” You ask.
“Yeah, he is” Kevin says. “What’s up?”
“Business” You say, ruffling his hair.

“Hey, cut that out. I’m not a kid anymore” He says.
“Ohhhh?” You say, grabbing his head and turning it towards you and getting in his face. “You realize that if I have to treat you like an adult, I’ll have to take revenge for that little incident that happened last time I was here”

Kevins swallows. “Right, sure… I guess it’s fine if you treat me like a kid” He says.
“Good!” You say, smiling and ruffling his hair a little more. “I’ll probably see you later”

“Yeah. Sure. Later” He says.

You wave as you walk past him towards the manor.

“You can be kind of scary sometimes” You say.
“I need to make sure that little prick knows who’s boss from time to time” You say. “It was always like that. The new kids and the young’uns need to know who the alpha is”
“Oh the things you learn in an orphanage” She says.

You smile at her.

Father Pitre is in the back yard watching the children play, just like he was last time.

“Good day” You say.
Pitre looks up, and seems surprised to see you. “Giles, what brings you back here so soon?” He asks.

You sit down next to him. “Oh, you have no idea” You say. “Johann”

“That’s my… how did you learn my name?” He asks.
“I met your son” You say. “Johann Pitre II”
“You did…” He says. “You must have questions then” He says.
“I do” You say. “Like the fact that King Mercutius was your brother, making Laura your niece”

“This is true” He says.

You twitch. “So?” You ask.

“So?” He asks back.
“Why is it that you’re here running an orphanage while all this other shit is going on?” You ask.

Father Pitre crosses his fingers and casts his gaze down, suddenly looking much older than you’ve ever known him to.

“What do you know of the war between Alka-Habra and Laust?” He asks.
“Not much” You reply. “It happened quite a while before I was born, though. I’ve heard that it was bloody”
“Bloody is an understatement” He says. “No quarter was the order. It was to be a genocidal conflict. Armed soldiers, old men, women, children, they were all considered fair game”

“That’s… who the hell ordered that?” You ask.
“Laura’s grandfather” He says. “Relations with Alka-Habra were different back then, and have changed much in the meantime. But few forgot what that time was like”

“Which is what caused the red night” You say.
“Indeed” He says. “The Senator could’ve been eaten by a lion and someone would’ve found a way to blame it on Laust. The whole country was like a rope that had been pulled too tight, and was ready to snap”

>[1/2]
>>
>>40609669
Ok, thanks Smiley, makes more sense now.
>>
“But that still doesn’t answer my question” You say.

Pitre sighs and takes a moment to collect himself. “My troops and I were on the front lines throughout that conflict. I never questioned my orders, and neither did my men”

“So what changed?” You ask.

“We burned a little village that was in the path between us and Tulia” He says. “Tulia being our goal. We meant to lay siege to it and take the capital once and for all. I can still remember the screams”

He looks back up to you. “I ordered my men to kill any who tried to escape the flames. As I watched what my work was bringing, I felt the bile rise in my throat. That night I tossed my possessions into the fires and left”

“You deserted” You say.
“I did” He says. “And not once have I looked back. I would much rather live a quiet life spent nurturing lives than an exciting one spent taking them”

“Well, I have some bad news then…” You say.
“Of course, you met him. I probably would’ve been at least one of the subjects in that conversation” He says. “What does he think of his father?”

“He’s pretty mad” You say. “Mostly at the fact that you, and I quote: ‘abandoned your only son to go coddle a bunch of orphans’. So yeah… he doesn’t think too highly of you”

“Well… I can’t exactly apologize to him” He says.
“And why not?” You ask.

As to when he made the orphanage, you could ask him about that. But around the end of the Laust-Alka-habra war is a good guess. Never a shortage of orphans after a war.

As for the second, as far as he knows Giles was a doorstep baby

“So… there was something I wanted to run by you” You say.
“What is it?” He asks.
“Well… theoretically speaking, if you knew what sort of bad things Fate had in store for the people you loved, and had a way to change it. What would you do?” You ask.

“I would do it” He says.
“Really?” You ask. “I thought you were a priest of the Fates”
“I am a priest, but not of the fates” He says.

“So… what are you a priest of?” You ask.
“In the oldest tales, the gods were two sides of a single coin” He says. “Fate on one side, Chance on the other”
“And you worship… the god of chance?” You ask.
“No” He says. “Like in all things, there must be balanced. You cannot have a coin with only one side”
“So… both equally?” You ask.

Pitre smiles and nods.

“Huh” You say. “I always just kind of assumed it was the Fates”
“You were no wrong, but you were not all right” He says. “Now, if you have nothing further, I should go and greet your friends”

“Oh! Right… so… Melissa and I… we’re uhhh… kind of a thing now” You say.
“Really? How strange, I always thought she was…” He trails off. “Never mind. I am happy for you. We’ll have to celebrate some time”

‘You have… technically” You say.

Pitre looks confused.

“I-I…” Marcy says, struggling to get her words together.

“I’m Kuma” Kuma says, bowing politely. “Giles’s assistant. Pleased to make your acquaintance”
“Indeed” Pitre says. “When did you get an assistant?”
“In Harth” You say.
“Ah, of course” He says. “But just what do you do that would require an assistant?”
“I’m Harth’s new spymaster” You say.

“Hang on, you mean… you actually work?” Pitre asks. “For a living?”
“Well yeah… of course I-…” You stop. “Are you crying?”
“No!” Pitre says. “Why would I shed tears at the news that the son I had long since given up hope on finally found gainful employment?”

“Har har” You say.

“I’m Marcella!” Marcy finally blurts out. “P-pleased to meet you!”
“Marcella… ahhh. I see it now” He says. “So you're Marcellus’s sister?”

You cover your face with your hand, and Marcy looks mortified by the idea of actually having to explain it to your father…

Lets give her a hand. Though she does need to get better at this.

Put a hand on her shoulder, give her a smile, silently let her know we're here for support.

“You good?” You ask her, putting a hand on her shoulder.
“Uhhhh…” She says quietly. “This is a bit harder than I thought it would be”
“Relax, I’m right here” You say, rubbing her back.

“Is everything all right?” Pitre asks.
“Yeah, just give her a second” You say.

“Uhh… I am Marcellus” Marcy says. “M-marcella is my real name”

It takes a few moments for Father Pitre to register this. “Oh… I see” He says. “Terribly sorry about that”
“I-it’s fine… this is something I’ve got to get used to at some point” She says.

“So… were you a girl masquerading as a boy, or are you a boy now masquerading as a girl?” Pitre asks.
“The first one” You say, choosing to spare Marcy from Pitre’s apparent cluelessness.

“I see” He says, extending his hand. “Well, it’s nice to meet you again Marcella”
“L-likewise” She says.

“Well, you might as well come and sit down” He says. “or I could have Coswell show you to your rooms so you can unpack”

You stretch your arms and head back to where you were sitting with Pitre earlier.

“So, a real job huh?” Pitre asks. “How’d you manage to land that?”
“I asked nicely” you say.
“You asked nicely to become Harth’s spymaster?” Pitre asks.

“I had already hired Kuma and her brethren at that point” You say. “I had the resources, and Harth was lacking”
“So if you’re the spymaster, why are you out here and not there?” He asks.

You point to Selene, who is still playing with the other children. “Laura wanted to make sure she stayed safe” You say.
“By sending her across the country?” He asks. “Would she not be safe in Harthren?
“Not as safe” You say. “Laura is worried that there are traitors in their midst, so she sent us away to keep her safe”

“That does raise further questions” He says.
“Like?” You ask.
“Like why the safety of one child is so important that they’d send their spymaster away” He says.

“Because Roderick’s ultimate goal is to have Selene in the palace so that she can be killed on the dark night in 2 months” You say.
“Why?” He asks.
“Because that is Fate’s course” You say.

“Is that why you were asking me about that earlier?” He asks.
“Yes” You say.
“I was not aware that Fate could be changed” He says.
“It can… if you’re a devil” You say.

“I thought so” He says.
“You thought what?” You ask.
“You have not always been good at hiding things, Giles” He says. “You have failed to give your Name on several occasions when a normal person would have been compelled”

“Have I really?” You ask.

Pitre nods.
“And you caught them?” You ask.
“I thought little of them until now, though they did seem strange at the time” He says.

“Hang on… if you noticed, why didn’t you kill me the way you’re supposed to with nameless children?” You ask.

“And allow the tenets of a belief I do not follow to make me do something I had no desire to do again?” he asks. “Never. Better to let a devil grow into a man than to murder a child that has committed no crime”

“Huh” You say. “Well… thanks, I guess. Though the ‘committed no crime’ bit is a little off”
“Bah, you were a good kid where it counted” He says. “Besides, in letting you live, you went on to save another.”

“That’s true… I guess” You say.
“So what purpose would killing you serve?” he says. “I say, if fate’s design requires the death of innocents, then maybe it is time we reconsidered our part in it”

And that's all for tonight, I hope you guys still enjoy reading this as much as I enjoy writing it.

Next thread will be sometime during the week. Still not sure when, but I'll definitely try to squeeze in a thread before the week is through.

As always I'll be sticking around for question/suggestion time!
