This is a quest based on the Phatnasy Star series of video games. You are Pheonixia, a newman force and member of the Hunter's Guild.

* Every 20 minutes, a post will be made with a series of choices to be made. Players may vote on any single or logical combination of choices. The most popular choices voted on within the first 15 minutes will be used.

* Write in votes with sufficient support may also be used.

* After the vote has been decided. The QM will roll relevant dice to determine success rate for the next progress post.

* You can follow Twitter account @sbf2009 for updates between quest sessions. https://twitter.com/sbf2009

* Previous sessions can be viewed on suptg. http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=PSOQ

The difficulty of an action will be stated as part of the choice for the vote, but not the numerical value needed to succeed. You can estimate the roll needed using the chart below.

Dice Roll Difficulty:

> Trivial (1-2): Most Hunter's Guild Members would have little trouble accomplishing this.

> Easy (3-4): Not necessarily difficult, but it would be best to let a specialist take over if available.

> Moderate (5-6): A strenuous task. If your class does not specialize in this kind of task, you may wish to find an easier alternative.

> Hard (7-9): Only an experienced guild member should risk this.

> Heroic (10-15): Not possible by even experienced guild members. Even legendary hunters like Rico Tyrell would hesitate to try such a task.

> Impossible (16+): As it sounds. Such actions defy perceptions of reality.

Last Time:

You attempt to cast Barta, but the dragon reacts too quickly. With a flap of its wings, everyone is pushed back as the dragon takes to the air again. It flips to point its noes straight down and dives into a pool of molten metal some tens of meters away. The ground shakes beneath you.
>>
The dragon's disappearance gives everyone a moment to breath.

Maia lifts her sword back up. “Well this is just great. Where'd it go?”

Elenor looks around. “Maybe we scared it off?”

The ground shakes beneath you.

“Let's move.” You lead the group toward the center of the rotunda. On the way, the ground behind gives a mighty groan and you see a bulge racing toward you. It shoots underneath you, sending the group into the air.

“We have to surround it!”

Everyone jumps to their feet and runs toward the traveling mass. You stand in front of it to cast barta. A weak stream of icicles shoots from your wand. Elenor takes shots to try to pierce the ground. None of your efforts are slowing it down.

As the bulge reaches the center of your group, the ground breaks and the dragon shoots into the sky. Lava is sent flying. Your frames sap most of the heat, but this leaves you and your friends sprayed with red hot pieces of rock.

The dragon drops down, rearing its wings into the air and welling fire up in its mouth.

Everyone is caked in warm, dried dragon blood. It smells of sulfur and rust. There's no time to dwell on hygiene, there are dragons to slay.

“Ash and Maia, work together to clip those wings. I want this thing to stay on the ground!”

Maia smirks, “Can do! Bet I'll finish mine first.”

“Elenor, you're with me!”

She reloads her rifle with an audible click. “Of course. The head, I presume?”

“Think you can blind it?”

Elenor smiles, “I'll certainly do my best!”

You stare the dragon down. “I am done with you. Barta!”

You let loose a stream of icicles. The dragon reflexively counters with fire breath. You are blown away.

Elenor looks back. “Pheonixia!” She is distracted just long enough for the dragon to bring its gaping jaws down on her. You are badly injured, but can still pick yourself back up.

You can see the dragon, bleeding from its mouth, wings, and belly. Ash and Maia have retreated a safe distance away. All that you see left of Elenor are her partially crushed legs, sparking electricity.

when you look at how the probabilities work, always having 2/stat chance of failing is kinda bullshit. It means that there will ALWAYS be a moderate chance of failure, more than a critfail on d20.

Either good equipment allows auto-success for some tasks, or expertise adds to the RESULT as opposed to pumping crystals to increase dice size.
>>
>>40609448

Equipment makes rolls easier, and opens new options. Pumping crystals increases dice size. Failures will happen sometimes. More equipment will become available to you that will make failing less likely and reduce the consequences of said failure.

Also, keep in mind this is your first big boss type fight, and shit happens.

>>40609525
>More equipment will become available to you that will make failing less likely
that's the part where I have a problem, because the minimum chance of failure is still much, much greater than 5% with [EASY]. If there's a difficulty tier below that that's auto-success or closer to 3%, then it's fine.
>>
>>40609525
>>40609588
Let me rephrase: [EASY] has a greater than 10% chance of failure. Something is wrong with that, is what I'm getting at.
>>
>>40609588

You've been a hunter for roughly a month now. More experience will afford you opportunities for better casting focuses, units, and training. Right now, you're a rookie who's brought some relatively inexperienced friends along to slay a dragon because that was the most politically expedient option for Tyrell's interests.
>>

You stand, defiant of the dragon, and wait for the chance to grab onto its head. Miraculously, you dodge out of the way of the dragon's jaws and grab on to one of the bony protrusions on its face. You brace yourself against its horns as it flails about.

Ash and Maiawynn hack at the underbelly, desperate to free their friend. You have one hand on the dragon's horn, and one on your wand.

> A. Use your wand as a lightning rod, pour all the electrical energy in the building into one last attack channeled through the wand itself. [MIND-Trivial]

> B. Bash the back of the dragon's skull. [STR-Easy]

> C. Stick your wand into the dragon's eye. [DEX-Moderate]
>>
>>40609695
>>40609736
My focus is on the future, because even at a MIND stat of, say, 20, the benefits of raising the stat further to decrease chance of failure start to drop off.

It would be more beneficial to specialize equipment to reduce difficulty ratings, while improving stats in a balanced matter to maximize chances.

Creative write-ins get special treatment. And you already have a piece of equipment like that. Your support tech unit makes casting Shifta and Deband easier. Better units will be made available as the technology evolves. Pillaging Pioneer I will help.

>A. Use your wand as a lightning rod, pour all the electrical energy in the building into one last attack channeled through the wand itself. [MIND-Trivial]

>>
>>40610020
I'm not talking about what we have now, I'm talking about the system that is implemented. There's just....not a lot of reason to pump crystals into a single stat. Specializing equipment is far more efficient than specializing stats.

You take a minute to gather yourself, using Resta to patch up the group.

“Arco, Wynn, try to find her MAG and work together to bring Elenor back.”

Arco floats over Elenor, flashing various beams into her frame. Wynn disappears into the carcass, bringing back Elenor's MAG. The two (three?) orbit around Elenor. Arco starts to flash a red circle onto Elenor's head.

Wynn floats up to your eyes and flashes pure Photon into your eyes. Your vision goes dark. You see a brief vision of a surgeon. When your eyesight returns, the MAGS are floating above Elenor's head. The hunters look very concerned.

You feel a bit overwhelmed. “It's...nice to meet you? Let's put Elsydeon to the side for a second. Tell me what happened to Ragol.” You point to the planet below.

Hugh smiles, “Yes it would certainly seem that way. This is Motavia as the last wielder of the Elsydeon remembers it, 2000 years past.”

Rudo adds, “That idiot is the one that broke it. At least before I had Rolf to talk to!”

Hugh continues, unfazed. “We assumed that the previous wielder broke the cycle. But seeing as you don't know the name of our planet, nor know it by its natural state, Chaz may have failed. The system is in great danger.”

“The Ragol I know is green and full of life. Why would a desert planet be preferable?”

“Because the natural life on Motavia should not try to kill without provocation!” Hugh looks very concerned. “Motavia is only ever green when a malevolent entity needs it to be so. It has served as a breeding ground for bio-monsters after every terraforming effort.”

“So what are we supposed to do, just leave? There's nowhere else to go.”

“What is Mother Brain?”

“It is an AI controlling several satellites and planetary control systems throughout Algol.” Hugh answers. “It was designed by a race of people from a far off, dead planet to wipe out the system of intelligent life to allow for colonization. If Motavia is indeed green again, then Mother Brain must be back, trying to accomplish its goal. Dark Force must not be far behind.”

“C'mon Hugh, you're overloading the poor girl,” Rudo interrupts, “She's got the shard now. We can fill her in when she's had a chance to sleep on it.”

“The shard!” You suddenly remember Elenor. “This shard was stuck in the brain circuitry of my friend. What is it doing to her, and how do I fix it?”

“Circuitry?” Rudo looks skeptical. “What, are you running around with a Wren unit or something?”

“Please, she needs my help!”

“I'm sorry, but since the shattering of the Elsydeon, we have had very little contact with the outside world. You'll have to figure that out on your own.” Hugh says. “Go to your friend, but remember to come back to us for guidance on how to protect...Ragol.”

Rudo adds, “Maybe have that robot pet of yours carry the shard around. It feels like it's got some laconium in it, might even be able to reforge us.”

You awaken with the shard clenched in your hand. You are being carried on Ash's back. Next to you is Maiawynn dragging Elenor in a makeshift sled. The shuttle is ahead.

Ash sets you down on your feet. “Round about... twenty minutes I'd say. You were just sitting there, staring into space. We decided to bring you back to the shuttle.”

“Elenor's still in bad shape,” Maia adds. “We need to send her to a roboticist soon. Her MAG is barely keeping her running.”

“Alright, we did what we set out to do. Let's go back to the ship.”

Maiawynn pilots the shuttle while Ash keeps an eye on you and Elenor. You turn the shard over in your palm, thinking about what happened earlier.

> A. Decide to send it to the lab in the morning.

> B. Give it to your MAG.

> C. Just put it away, look at it more when you get home.

Take a break. Study it ourselves. How else are we going to make highly dangerous experimental weapons?

“Arco, Wynn. Take a look at this thing, will you?”

They both probe the metal for a bit. Arco starts to absorb part of it. Wynn takes the other half. They meet in the middle of the shard and part again. The shard dissapears.

“Hey, are you supposed to feed MAGs metal like that?” Ash asks. “I thought they needed Photon.”

“You'll just have to tr-” Your mind is suddenly filled with images. Experiences from the eyes of two strangers. A gruesome image of a man killing his daughter them himself. The next image, a decaying monstrosity in a lab.

The last image is more vivid. Many strange men fill a room,, all dressed in alien robes. “Welcome to the spaceship, Noah.”

The voice of Rudo cries out. “We shall make you see how it feels to lose something that you love!”

Hugh joins him. “You have shown me the ugliness of continued existence.”

You come back to reality, shaken and confused, but you feel stronger for it. Ash looks terrified.

“It happened again! Are you okay? I think we need to send you to med bay.”

That's good for tonight. Next time, well. The game opens up...a lot. We are no longer railroading PSO episode I, so the choices will be very open ended.

Next session Sunday at 7 PM. Afterwards, I'm thinking about twice a week.
