Sorry that we have a bit of a late thread today. It'll probably be a short one anyways since we're just going to wrap this current mission up!

You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force!

Currently, you and Red were hustling through a forest near the irradiated Russian/Ukrainian border. You weren't too sure whether you were actually in Russia or Ukraine right now, but that distinction was purely academic at this point.

However, what was more worry was the the fact that your normally white radiation badge was starting to darken, the edges already turning charcoal black. Even with Red's shield, you were still getting exposure.

"Must be getting closer to a hot spot." Red pants. You can't see her face through the MOPP mask, but you can tell she's fatigued.

"We should stop to rest." You say, putting a hand on Red's shoulder to stop her.

"We don't have time for that!" Red grunts as she brushes your hand off. "There's people that need our help out there! And if the Russians don't get them the radiation will!"

"Conserve your magic, then." You say. "Keep your shield on yourself."

"Are... are you sure you're okay with that, Cap?" Red gasps. "I mean, if you stay out here too long..."

"I now the consequences." You cut her off. "Besides, radiation won't kill me instantly, and if this get bad, well, you or Janice can heal me afterwards!"

"Whatever you say, Cap." Red says skeptically as the blue sparkles int he air slowly retract back to hovering around her body. "But if you feel anything off, you tell me right away, you got that?"

"I thought I was supposed to be the one giving the orders here." You laugh.

"Well, chalk it up to that witch privilege." Red chuckles.

"Sir, I've scouted the path ahead of you." Tarin reports. "There's a town about two kilometers from your position. If there's anywhere to hole up, it's going to be there."

"Great job." You say.

"There's something else." Tarin continues. "Ghost went a bit further east and caught sight of a convoy. A big one, with witch support. Looks like they're dead set on finding this witch. We can set up an ambush, slow them down a bit."

"How far are they?"

"They'll probably reach the town in an hour, assuming they don't run into complications." Tarin reports.

2. Engage

A) Shoot him ourselves
B) Leave him to all the people who he's wronged (Raikov, Statsya, Lilya, Anya) and the other people who will want to push his shit in (Frank, Ice, Slider, Katya, the officer who is looking after Raikov).
C) Leave him to a court.

"Don't engage them, Tarin. Better that they don't know we're here." You instruct.

"Roger. Will keep an eye on them, then." She says.

"Better get moving, right Cap?" Red picks up her pace, now no longer hampered with having to maintain a larger shield.

The two of you dash through the trees. You could now see the barest signs of buildings through the gaps in the trees, signifying that you were getting closer.

"You think Bullseye got back safe?" Red asks.

"You know he did." You answer.

"Yeah, yeah." Red mutters.

"Something bugging you, Red?" You ask as you duck under a low branch.

"A bit." Red says, vaulting over a fallen log. "I'm just wondering why someone would go through all this trouble, sending men into a radioactive hot zone just to grab one witch."

"Well, witches ARE valuable." You say, and something dark occurs to you. "Unregistered ones even moreso. I mean, think about it. Every coven on Earth keeps careful track of every witch that appears, with no exceptions. Most sneaky black ops guys would LOVE to have a witch that doesn't show up on any official record."

"Yeah, that makes sense." Red grumbles. "Kinda pisses me off, you know? Trying to rescue someone because you think you can use them, rather than just, you know, SAVING them."

"Not everyone is like us." You shake your head. At this point, you've finally reached the outskirts of the town, looking to be long abandoned, or seemingly long abandoned. You try not to look at the large amount of hopefully abandoned vehicles choking the road out of the town.

"Damn, this town is way bigger than I thought it would be." You mutter. "Tarin, you see anything?"

"I don't see anything from the air. I think they're hiding from aerial recon, anyways." Tarin points out.

"Yeah, you're right." You sigh. "We'll have to house to house."

"If we split up, we should be able to cover more grown." Red suggests, and pauses. "Don't worry, you'll be fine!"

"Ha ha." You say humorlessly.

"Or, you know, we can do something to draw their attention. A radio message or flare or something?" Red suggests.

"We'll stick together on this one." You say.

"Well, I suppose you need someone to look after you, Cap." Red chuckles.

"Tarin." You continue, ignoring Red's jab. "See any place that looks like a good shelter?"

"Stand by." Tarin says, and you can see her circling lazily over the town. "There are a few possibilities. There's the town hall. Nice central location and the most well built structure in the town. Still looks largely intact. I can also see a drainage grate near the river. Possible underground tunnel system there. There's also an intact barn on the edge of the town. Lots of open ground around it, so whoever is in there can see you coming miles away."

"The tunnels are the best protection from the radiation." You say. "As well as to hide from any enemies. That's where they're surely hiding."

"Aw nuts." Red sighs. "Well, at least we're wearing MOPP gear so we won't have to smell it."

"Yeah, until you have to take off the mask." You note before coming across a large manhole cover. "This will be our way in."

"Fine, fine." Red kneels down and tries to pry the manhole open. "But for the record, I do not like this."

"Noted." You help her pull the manhole cover off and push it away to the side, opening up the hole to the underworld.

"Ladies first." You motion.

"Always the gentleman, huh?" Red sighs.

"That and you're more likely to survive a booby trap than me." You point out.

"True." Red slings her carbine around her shoulder and takes out her sidearm instead. "Let's get this over with."

Red turns on her vest mounted torch and leaps down into the darkness, landing with a loud SPLASH.

"EEWWWWWWW. I hope this is just rainwater!" Red groans.

"Is it clear?" You shake your head at Red's lack of professionalism.

"Yeah, yeah, it's clear." Red grunts. "Oh man, this DEFINITELY doesn't feel like rainwater.."

"Clear the way!" You warn before leaping down yourself. There's a loud SPLASH as you land into knee deep water. Well, you hope it's water, anyways.

You wish that you could be a bit more silent, but being in knee deep water, it was impossible to move around without making loud splashing and sloshing noises. It also masks the sound of others approaching, which you found out very quickly.

"That is far enough, stranger." You hear a soft, rasping voice, obviously filtered through a gas mask from the darkness behind you. The loud, audible click of a gun safety being clicked off punctuates his sentence.

"Whoa there, we're not here to fight." You say, raise your arms in nonaggression. You nod to Red, who reluctantly holsters her handgun.

"An American? You are a long way from home, my friend." The voice says.

"We're a UN rescue force. We heard your distress calls." You explain. "We're here to get you out of here."

"Well, that does sound very good." The voice mutters. "But is that not something a Spetsnaz would say to lower our guard?"

"Oh for the love of-" Red groans.

"Hey, look. I'm here to rescue you, not to waste time on a debate." You grunt. "The longer we spend down here fucking around, the more time the Russians have of finding us! Right now we got a big ass convoy of them headed straight to this town. They'll be here in thirty minutes, maybe less!"

"Well, you seem honest enough." The voice grunts and pats you on the back. You turn to see an unsurprisingly masked man facing you, an old AK slung over his shoulder. He's wearing a very crude NBC suit, obviously of a much lower quality than yours. "I am Sergeant Strelok. Come, I will take you to the others."

Strelok then turns and wades his way deeper into the sewer tunnels.

"Can we trust that guy?" Red whispers.

"Do we have a choice?" You retort before following Strelok's wake.

After a few more twists and turns in the tunnels, you're finally led to an large inner chamber, possibly some kind of storage tank. Inside, you can see three men in NBC gear similar to Strelok's, as well as one masked child sitting amongst them. A small fire from scavenged wood burns weakly, providing some measure of warmth.

"That's the Little One, I presume?" You point.

"You know of her?" Strelok pauses.

"We ran into the rest of your squad. They told us about her, and how the Russians were after her." You say.

"I see." Strelok nods. "They are safe?"

"We airlifted them out a while ago. They should be at a hospital by now." You nod.

"Thank goodness..." Strelok breathes a sigh of relief.

"Sir, I don't know if you can hear this, but the convoy's reached the edge of the town." Tarin reports, her voice fuzzy and warped by interference. "I'm already seeing infantry sweeping house to house. You need to get out of there NOW."

"Shit!" You curse. "Strelok, are you men ready to move?"

"They are tired, the Little One most of all." Strelok says sadly. "We only just stopped to rest."

"Strelok, you need to get your men to pack up and get out of town." You hiss. "Once those Russians get here, they will tear this entire town to pieces to find her! You got that? We need to move and move NOW."

Strelok is silent for a long moment, looking to his men, the Little One, and then to you.

"I have a different idea." Strelok puts his hands on your shoulders. "We will will stay here and lead the Russians away. You take the Little One to safety. She will be less of a burden to you than five tired, dying men."

"No, there has to be another way." You shake your head.

"There is too much risk." Strelok loads his AK. "We will do our duty and protect our countrymen. At least grant us this one honor."

"Cap, we gotta go!" Red murmurs as the ceiling begins to vibrate, shaking out dust and loose pebbles. A sign of a very heavy vehicle driving over you.

"YOU HEARD THE CAP!" Red bellows. "GET UP, PACK YOUR SHIT, AND GET YOUR STUPID ASSES MOVING!"

Immediately, Strelok's men scramble to their feet and start grabbing whatever they can. Weapons and ammo, mainly.

"Leave the camping equipment." Strelok instructs. "Take as little as you can. With any luck we will be leaving this god forsaken place."

"Thank you, Red." You sigh.

"You're welcome. Just gotta know how these guys work. They always listen to the one that screams the loudest." Red says proudly.

"Uh huh." You nod. "Anyways, you get the Little- goddamnit, Strelok, does she actually have a name?"

"We do not know, and she does not speak, so we make guess." Strelok shrugs.

"Agh, whatever, Red, grab L. You're in charge of getting her to extraction."

"Roger that, Cap!" Red salutes and approaches the Little One and bodily picks her up. You can hear the smaller witch squeak, but she doesn't resist.

"Strelok, you good to go?" You ask.

"Yes we are." Strelok nods. "As ready as any of us can be."

"Tarin, make that distraction." You order.

"Roger that." Tarin says and right away, the entire sewer chamber rumbles from explosions followed by gunfire. "You're clear."

All right, go go go!" You start yell. Strelok pushes his men forward as they scramble out of the outflow pipe, kicking out the old rusted grate and into the small river outside. You're the next one out, with Red was out last, carrying the Little One. Overhead, you can see Tarin, Ghost, and Misono circling overhead as they fire at targets on the ground. The fires and columns of smoke rising up from the town behind you signify that they've hit quite a few targets.

"You should be clear on your current heading." Tarin says. "Actually, scratch that. Misono, hit that BTR."

Up ahead, you see a BTR crest a small ridge in front of you before Misono flies overhead, emptying an entire magazine from her M16 into the transport. The BTR nosedives into the empty riverbed, leaking black smoke.

"Go! GO!" You wave at Strelok to keep moving. "Bullseye, I hope you're out there! We're going to need some evac!"

"I'm fifteen minutes out!" Bullseye says.

"Shit, witches!" Red warns.

Indeed, you see four witches with the signature black Russian strikers, immediately moving in to engage Tarin, Ghost, and Misono.

I highly doubt that the Russians are trained to deal with a witch attacking them with a sword. Thus, Misono is a real game changer.

"Try to lead them away, Tarin." You say as you look up to the sky.

"Roger that." Tarin affirms. Up above, you see Tarin, Ghost, and Misono boost away from your line of retreat. You see the four Russian witches give chase, almost completely leaving the mission area. It was almost too easy, really.

"All right, the witches are following us, but you're on your own." Tarin warns. "Good luck, sir."

"I should be saying that to you, Tarin." You grin. "Stay safe."

"I will."

"All right, Boss, I'm almost there." Bullseye reports. "I see a clearing I can land at. Should be about three kilometers west of you."

"Ah ah! Hey!" Red grunts.

"What's going on?" You turn to see the Little One struggling in Red's grip.

"I dunno, she just started going crazy!" Red seethes.

"It must be something bad there." Strelok mutters. "That far west, it brings us very close to ground zero. Possibly very heavy radiation there."

"Uh, I guess the alternative is that I head over to where you are and rope you up. It's gonna take a while and I'd be pretty damn exposed." Bullseye offers. "Not that I'm offering or anything."

"Meet us out here, Bullseye." You say. "That LZ is apparently hot."

"Roger that." Bullseye responds. "Where are the others, though?"

"Off playing with other witches." You say. "Nun's going to be your only air support, here."

"Wonderful. Getting the short end like always. Let's get this over with."

You trudge further through the forest until you hear the familiar thumping of the Osprey's rotors. Looking up, you see the craft descending as it switches from its plane configuration to its helicopter mode. The rear ramp opens, with Rex manning a mounted MG while Hoskins operates the rescue winch. He lowers the basket to the ground, where Red first deposits her charge.

"This will go faster if you let me help load." Nungesser suggests. "It'll get us out of here faster."

"Concentrate on protecting the Osprey." You order. "There are still Russians around."

"Gotcha!" Nungesser says cheerfully as she hovers near the Osprey, casting her shield large and wide.

Meanwhile, Strelok's men are quickly being loaded up, two at a time in order to keep things going quickly. Finally, it's just you and Red on the ground as Hoskins lowers the winch again.

"Get down!" Nungesser shouts as machine gun fire lances out from the trees, slamming into her shield. She returns fire with her FAMAS rifle, but of course, she can't get a good visual of the attackers as more bullets and RPGs slam into her protective shield. Rex immediately joins in with his MG.

"I cannot hold the shield up much longer!" Nungesser seethes. "We must go!"

You and Red eye the winch warily. You're not sure how it would perform with the Opsrey under fire.

"Get on the winch!" You point and Red nods and grabs on to it the same time as you do. "Hold on tight!"

"Yeah, no shit, Cap!" Red grunts and waves at Hoskins to pull you up.

As the winch winds up, it seems almost impossibly slow. Meanwhile, Nungesser continues to ward away attacks against the Osprey, but you know that even her absurdly strong shields had their limits. An RPG screeches out of the trees and slams into Nungesser's shield head on. You see her get forced back and she yelps loudly when her back slams against the side of the Osprey, pushing the craft several meters and causing the winch to rock.

"Nun! Are you okay?!" Bullseye yells.

"I am fine!" You hear Nungesser snap, though she makes what you assume are a number of French curses. "You need to move! I cannot hold them off any longer!"

"But-"

"GO, Bullseye!" You bark.

Bullseye powers up the engines, picking up both speed and altitude. Red wraps her arms around your waist and closes her eyes as both of you are literally pulled into the sky, trailing behind the Osprey as the winch continues to strain to pull you in. Nungesser takes position behind you, shielding both you and the Osprey from further attacks.

And that's when two Flankers dive down from the clouds to engage.

"Oh merde." Nungesser groans.

However, you're saved when Laika's XF-19 dives down right on top of the Flankers, blowing them both apart with close range sidewinders and raining fiery shrapnel down into the trees.

"You're welcome!" Laika chimes as she pulls up alongside the Osprey, waggles her wings, and climbs back to ambush altitude.

"Thank goodness." Nungesser sighs. "I wouldn't have been able to fight them and protect you at the same time."

As the Osprey flies for safety, you see a Russian Mi-8 fly past. With no weapons to effectively engage each other, all you can do is just awkwardly stare at the enemy helicopter. However, you do recognize the one of the occupants, standing in the open side door.

Volgin.

The scarred man looks at you, and then at the quickly disappearing XF-19. You're sure he would scowl or shoot you a poisonous look for stealing yet another witch away from him. However, he does something you didn't expect.

He just smiles, as if he knew something you didn't.

That smile remained burned in your head all the way back to base as you tried to figure out what it meant.

>And that's it for tonight! Next thread is next week. Don't forget Ace Combat on Friday and Vertical Tanks on Saturday!
>As for future threads, I will wrap up the last couple of plotlines and put the quest on hiatus until '89 ends. At 76 threads, this quest has gone on quite a bit longer than I intended! Anyways, have a good night!

I'll probably stop running on Sundays. I can't really run as long as I want to with at least half the readers conking out.
>>
>>40616091
Worrisome. Also, sucky we couldn't shoot him down. Then let him die of radiation poisoning.
>>
>>40616180
It's okay, boss. You need the break, too. So take this chance to rest and relax on Sundays.
>>
>>40616167
Well I think Merc dropped a clue when he had her react when we were headed towards the radiation. I'm not sure what it means, but if she's able to tell where it is it could mean a lot of things.
>>
>>40616180
That;'s kind of a shame to be honest. While I agree you deserve a break, I also feel like it's a bit of a waste as well.

Then again, there is not much to do on Sundays.
>>
>>40616180
Its early monday in my place (and by early its 09.00-10.00 am) when you start and honestly, you make this dreadful day more bearable with PJ witches.
Well, its your call to move your quest time and i will fine with whatever your decision later.
