Welcome to the inaugural thread for Blackguard Quest! May evil prevail! Now then, Choose your start!
>Alone, traveling through the countryside looking for a decent lair to make your base of operations
>You've managed to conceal your dark power, and sign up as a fighter in an amateur adventuring group about to enter it's first dungeon
>Running from something a hell of a lot more scary than you
>In jail. your first attempt at evil didn't go so well, and the adventurer's who captured you and brought you to this little village are currently mocking you from outside your cell.

Play the lesser evil. Forced to defeat greater evil. Get mistaken for good guy. Try not to cry. Cry a lot.

Current rules! note that some of these are subject to change, especially the dice. cause fuck /tg/ dice.
>10 minute voting period, may be extended in case of clever write-ins
>Write-ins are ALWAYS a valid options I don't care if you're just going to sleep, if you have a write-in, you can vote for it.
>Try not to bitch at people for namefaggin. I'll restrict it if it becomes a problem but right now I don't care.

I would like to start this way.

Just read the previous thread and i have wanted something like this for a while, and was thinking about starting a similar quest later. Good luck Eclipse.

>>40623500

Looks like fighter takes it, writing. gonna give you bit of set-up, and then throw a backstory/chargen cutscene at you. you won't have much control over your actual actions during it to prevent you never falling, but i'll give you some stuff to do.
>>
>>40623513
Don't worry if this is your first quest, just try to act natural and write what feels right and be smart about it and try not to worry too much. If i see anything glaringly bad i will constructively point it out, otherwise i will do my best to be supportive. Once again good luck and god speed Eclipse.
>>
Just to be sure: the MC is a guy, right?
>>
>>40623669
Probably.

I mean the OP pic it looks manly enough, not like the world is lacking in female blackguard pics. (No really there are plenty.)
>>
>>40623669
As long as we're not futa, I don't even care.
>>
>>40623669
Maybe there will be a choice for it in chargen later?

Of course, we could all yell at each other now about it before coming to no consensus at all and save ourselves some time later on.
>>
The sun beats down on your helmet, a brilliant golden disc in the sky, standing in front of the entrance to your first dungeon, the goblins guarding the little wooden door leading into the hill dead at your feet, your weapon covered in their blood. it's a good feeling, a feeling of accomplishment. At least, it would be, if the dwarf and the bard would stop arguing for one blasted second!
"For the last time, no you may not use my lute to break down the door!" "Ah c'mon, it's solid wood, It'll probably take a coupla whacks."
"No appreciation for art! That's your problem!"
They won't. shut. up. Why in the hells did you ever think this was a good idea? "That's quite enough out of both of you," the leader of your party, a tall bronze-skinned man named Bregnest says, stepping between the squabbling idiots and sheathing his greatsword behind him. "We're here to kill the goblins, not each other. Fuldo, I expect you to leave Amerith alone from now on, his magic is useful enough without you using his instrument as a blunt weapon." "Ah but sir," The rogue adds, sliding his way into the conversation, "Surely the dwarf has a point, we are supposed to be killing goblins, and his music will alert everyone in the cave." You like the rogue, he's at least smart enough to not try and steal from you. "The cave isn't very large if what the village headman told us was true, and we'll need Amerith's enchantments in a fight." says bregnest, in a tone that clearly ends the discussion.
Fuldo, the squat dwarf who smells of cheap ale, scoffs, and thumps away from the overly-dressed elf in disgust, pulling out his battleaxe and approaching the door.
Why did you ever team up with these idiots? the leader you can tolerate, and the rogue at least doesn't talk much. You suppose it all goes back to that day. that day when you found out everything you knew was a lie.
>>40623669
>>40623696
>>40623706
>>40623724
There'll be a choice in chargen.
>>
>>40623724
But anon making sure that after long discussion we have come to the conclusion that we Have not come to a consensus is standard /tg/ fare.
>>
>>40623750
>>40623750
Are you continuing this post then? Maybe put cont. for continuing or something. Otherwise where is the greentext choices?
>>
We should establish how we're going to play the character now rather than play him as bipolar crazy. Things like under what circumstances will he stab his allies in the back, what are limits of evil he'll be doing (like killing an innocent that stands in the way, burn an orphanage then incriminate an opposing cultist, sexually molest and/or torture prisoners...), how we ensure loyalty of minions and allies (fear, respect, greed, deception...), how fickle or true to our word we are, whether we value wealth over power etc...
>>
>>40623810
Let's wait for our backstory and motivation first.
>>
>>40623810
See >>40623760. Our character will forever be a schizophrenic wreck that only makes the worst decisions ever.

That said, even if we can't come to a consensus on anything else, I think we can all agree on the following:
All the votes for the choice that beat out mine are samefagged!
Making my actions have negative consequences is shitty QMing! Stop railroading me!
Above all, we're NOT going to make our character a fucking kender.
>>
>>40623750
Fire, screaming, ash and death. everywhere you turn, people are dieing, being cut down like wheat before a scythe, the bandits are everywhere, hacking and slashing with long cruel swords, taking everything they can carry, and burning the rest. so much pointless death, the corpses piled high in some places, you recognize them, they're your family, your friends, everybody you knew and loved, your mother stares up at you with blank eyes, her life long since flown through the gaping slash across her chest. your house burns, a brilliant red-golden flame that snaps and crackles, mocking you with faces in the fire.
*BANG BANG BANG!*
you wake up, your sheets a tangled mess, and your body covered with cold sweat. It had been so real, you could've touched them, you swear it! The knocking comes again, loud and persistent at your door. the voice of the drill instructor booms into your ears, "GET YOUR LAZY ARSE OUT OF BED INITIATE! YOUR CEREMONY IS TODAY AND THE OLD MEN AREN'T GONNA WAIT FOR YOU!" Your ceremony, shit. you had forgotten, today was the day you join the ranks of your order, as a fully-fledged paladin.

Eh, I would have liked a female character. Anyway

Some explanation on those names:

>Avitus

"From a Roman family name which meant "ancestral" in Latin. This was the name of an emperor who briefly reigned over the western Roman Empire in the 5th century. It was also the name of several saints, including a 6th-century bishop of Vienne."

>Faustus

"Roman cognomen meaning "auspicious, lucky" in Latin. It was borne by several early Christian saints."

Also the latinized name of Doctor Faust.

>>Lavataios

Couldn't find anything

>Alex Branwen

Branwen:

"Means "beautiful raven" from Welsh bran "raven" and gwen "fair, white, blessed". In the Mabinogion, a collection of tales from Welsh myth, she is the sister of the British king Bran and the wife of the Irish king Matholwch."
>>
>>40624013
>>Avitus

6'2, wiry black hair of medium length, Cold, blue eyes, and we well-kept goatee. Strong, average weight, has the strength to back up his contempt for idiots.

You roll out of bed, the lingering sense of terror from the nightmare quickly pushed from your mind, and replaced with worry for the day's events. the ceremony of passage, the holy event through which an initiate leaves behind his training tunic, and takes up his armor as a paladin of the lady Esmera. All of your training has led to this glorious day, when you will join your brothers-in-arms as a fully-fledged paladin. You must prepare for the trial ahead of you, the ceremony is said to have three tests, before the initiate can join the order, your entire time at the temple has been spent in preparation for this moment, what do you do first?

You're starving, this isn't something you can face without getting some food in your stomach first, the mess hall's food might be really basic, but it's filling, and a paladin must not take more than what is absolutely necessary. Throwing on your tunic, you sprint down to the mess, the smell of good solid food fills your nose, as you fall into the line of initiates waiting to be served. Several of the friendlier ones yell congratulations, and encouragement to you, wishing you luck in your coming trial. You grab your meal, a simple affair of bread and stew, wolf it down, and head for the training grounds. Stepping outside into the open air of the training field, you spy two of your friends, Jasmine and Ergon, already hard at work, their trials are today as well, and it looks like they got up earlier than you did. After casting a quick look around the training field, you

>>40624632
You're about to walk over to your friends and talk to them, when you think you see something out of the corner of your eye, you turn quickly, hoping to catch it again and, yes there! A small metal object lays in the sand nearby, glinting in the sunlight, walking over and looking down, you see it's a silver ring in the shape of a small dragon or goblin-like figure, with small purple gemstones for eyes, clutching it's tail in it's hands. How odd, you're quite certain it doesn't belong to any of the other initiates, you're worldly possessions are taken away when you enter into the temple. And you doubt it belongs to any of the adults, the true paladins are all wandering the countryside making it safe, and you've never seen the drill instructor or the teachers with any jewelry.
>Pocket it, you can always report it to the instructors later on and find who it belongs to.

You pull your warhammer out of the weapons rack, you always liked this weapon, the weight in your hand, the dull whoosh as it traveled through the air, the fact that if you got in a good hit most armor would crumple like tin. and the gods help the poor bastard if they're wearing chain-mail. Walking over to the practice dummy, you spin the warhammer in your grip, getting a feel for it's weight. squaring off against the post, you launch into a series of basic stances, the head of the hammer sailing through the air to slam into the padded target, sending the dummy shuddering. You feel time slip away around you as you take comfort in the routine, strike, sidestep, shieldblock, counter-strike, the dull thud of the hammer beating out a steady rhythm against the post. You always were stonger than you looked, your wiry frame surprisingly capable of maintaining the weight of your favorite weapons for long periods of time before your arms grow tired. eventually though, your arms feel heavy, and your movements slow. Looking towards the sky, you see that about an hour has passed since you began your practice.
>Avitus has gained, basic warhammer training!

Looking around, you notice your friends over by the well, cooling off after their practice, you have another two hours before your trial begins, you could go and talk to them, but you might be pressed for time.

You jog over to your friends at the well, you'll have to go pray soon, but you need to cool off after that training session. As you approach, they wave you over smiling. Ergon starts talking as soon as you get near.
"Avitus! We thought you'd never finish! Do you think you're ready for the trials today? What do you think they are? What are you going to do once you graduate to a paladin? Where do you think you'll go? I can't wait to travel the world and fight evil and-" It's at this point that jasmine smacks him upside the head to shut him up, offering you an apologetic smile, her short-cut raven locks falling across her face. She lost the ability to speak after having her throat slashed by a marauder some years ago, unfortunately, her wound was beyond the skill of the temples paladins to heal. Ergon more than makes up for her though, the freckled boy can't ever keep his mouth closed for long, and when he opens it, it's like a stream suddenly being released from behind a beaver dam. These two have been your friends since you first arrived, you've grown closer to them then you have to any other living being, and when you graduate, they'll be your comrades in arms.

You can't help but laugh lightly to yourself as you splash some water on your face, no matter how many years go by, Ergon will still be that same sandy-haired youth who talked your head off on your first day. "I'm sorry, but I really don't have time to talk right now, I woke up late again, and I need to go prepare my blessings" you say, not quite able to hide the laughter in your voice. Jasmine gives you a reproachful look, you know that one, she's scolding you for getting up late again, you couldn't help it, it's not fault that... no. No it was just a dream and nothing more. Shaking off the momentary chill that runs down your spine, you smile, and wish them good luck, before jogging off to the cloister.
The air here is heavy and cool, and the weight of age seems to hang on you from the intricately carved statues lining the walls, and the small alter in the center of the room, the golden triple-ring of the lady giving off a sense of calm. kneeling before the alter, you begin to pray, readying your divinely-granted spells for the trials ahead.

You close your eyes and sink into the mantra of your prayer, asking the lady for her divine blessing. The cool air pricks at your skin, and the your legs grow numb from your weight, but you do not lose focus, chanting your prayers over an over again, asking for the gifts of magic that the lady bestows upon her followers. The world grows distant around you, until you cannot feel the cool of the air, or thee hard stone beneath, you are floating in a black void, detached from all feeling and conscious thought. then the power comes to you, filling you with warmth. for a brief instant, you think you feel a pinprick on your finger, but then it is gone, and only the warmth remains. Coming out of your trance, your gift now replenished, you stand. You cannot see the sun, but you've always had an innate sense of time, and you feel as though about an hour and a half has gone by. your trial starts soon.

Mana is now 10/10, you may currently vote to spend up to 5 mana at a time to change the result of a die roll at the cost of 1-1.
>Avitus has gained, Prayer! Pray to regain your mana pool.
>Avitus has gained, Lay on hands! Once per day, you may channel healing magic through your hands to heal your target for a quarter of your maximum health.
>Avitus has gained, Holy Lance! At the cost of 5 mana, you may conjure a lance of light that flies towards an enemy.
>Avitus has gained, Detect evil! At the cost of 2 mana, you may enchant your eyes to reveal the basic nature of a person to you.
>Avitus has gained, Smite Evil! Once per day you may channel your faith into your weapon, making it do extra damage on it's next attack against an evil target!
Magic works like this, there are spells, which cost mana, and then there are abilities, which can only be used a certain number of times per day, mana can also be used to manipulate the dice, but any criticals gained this gained this way will be less effective then a natural crit, so critical success's will be less effective if gained using mana, but critical failures will be less disastrous, the degree of change, depends on how much mana you spend.

You spend the rest of your time getting ready for the trials ahead of you, grabbing your initiate's armor, and making sure your warhammer and shield are fitted properly, and that everything is in good condition. When you're absolutely sure that everything is ready, you travel to the large central temple where the elders wait. Ergon and Jasmine are already there, and Ergon is actually quiet for the once, the weight of the moment having shut his mouth. The three of you stand there for what feels like an eternity, before an initiate leads you into the grand temple. You all walk forward, and kneel at the foot of the steps leading up to the great alter, the five elders, dressed in their white robes of office stand before you, looking like great wizened sages. The head elder steps forward, and addresses you in a quavering voice,
"Young ones, you have come today, for your final test to enter into the ranks of the lady's paladins. These trials shall wear on your very spirit, and you may well not survive, but if you do, you shall be welcomed into our order, as-" The great doors fly open, the drill instructor is standing there, his longsword in it's sheath on his hip, his eyes wild, he yells, "Old ones, bandits! Bandits and marauders are attacking the temple! They came from the village road!" You can feel your heart freeze in your chest, your nightmare rush's back to you with crystal clarity, and your legs grow weak, almost as if in a dream, you hear the Eldest speaking, "Quick young ones, defend the temple! Avitus, you will help guard our escape."
What? Ergon and jasmine bow hurriedly, before rushing out the door. A small voice seems to whisper in your ear, "You heard them, they're escaping, they're leaving you all to die and getting out." no. No that can't be right, they are the elders of your order, there must be something you don't know, how could you doubt them.

Pushing the small voice out of your head, you pull yourself to your feet, jogging forward to join the elders and the drill instructor at the alter, you watch as the instructor reaches up, taking hold of a carving of the lady and twisting it. The pestle grinds across the floor with a mighty groan, revealing an opening beneath, and a set of stairs leading down into a passageway, the elders climb down the ladder, and the drill instructor motions for you to follow, "They're running away," a voice like silk whispers in your ear, "They're leaving your friends to die, they've been lying to you." No, that can't be right... can it? No, no of course not. You climb down the ladder, turning around, your eyes grow wide at the sight before you, as the drill instructor rushes past.

A large cave, with a river running through the middle, the elders are climbing onto a boat sitting in the river, and the drill instructor is headed that way, he turns his head towards you, and yells, "C'mon lad! It'll take both of us to pilot that thing, the old men are to weak, do you want to be killed by bandits?! Hurry your arse up!" For a brief second, you almost do as he tells you, conditioned by years of jumping at the sound of his voice, and then a deep. cold. hatred fills you. the boat is loaded with things of gold and silver, precious gems and metals, you recognize some of them, they are the things of value that the initiates had with them when they entered the church. "I told you," the silken voice whispers "I told you, but you wouldn't listen, look at all that wealth, why, with money like that they could've afforded the spell to save your friends voice, I wonder why they didn't." Jasmine. With that money the elders could've paid for the reagent costs to perform the ritual to fix her voice, but they had said they couldn't, said the church was to poor, they lied. They've been lying for all these years! You grip tightens on your warhammer, and your knuckles go white.

You dash forward, rushing past the drill instructor, your mind focused only on one thing. The mooring ropes. You charge, shifting your warhammer around in your hand so that the spike is facing outward, reaching the impromptu dock, you slam the spike into the ropes, It catches in the old wood! For a moment, you don't think they're going to given way, and then with a loud "TWANG!" they slither off the post at blinding speed! The boat speeds away down the river, the screams of the old men merging with the clanging sound of precious metals slamming together, rising high into a terrifying soprano, as the boat rush's out of sight. The drill instructors voice echo's from behind you, "You're crazy boy!" he screams, fumbling at his hip for his longsword, "Do you want to stay here and die at the hands of a bunch of filthy bandits! There was enough money on that boat to live like lords!"

If you hadn't spent the mana he would've been able to fight back after you whacked him, by spending the mana you're strong enough knock him on his ass and start beating him to death.
>>
>>40628974

Our first official act as fallen paladin will be to beat our martial tutor to death with a shield.

Pic very fucking related. This quest is getting off to a good start.
>>
>>40629121
Well, technically we doomed a bunch of old men to drowning and a bunch of valuable shit with them.

The kind of evil that cares not for earthly baubles?

Who only wants his cutie mutie back.
>>

Mana, 7/10
You let go of the your warhammers handle, using your mana to enhance your speed and strength, you charge the coward, slamming your shield into his gut, and knocking him to the ground. "No." you say, walking over to where he lies groaning. "What the fuck is this? Were we training to be your personal bodyguards? Do you believe anything at all?"
crouching over him, you slam your shield into his face, "Fuck you, this isn't what Paladins are meant to do!" You say, your voice building to a roar, you slam your shield into his face again with a sickening crack, and find that you can't stop. You realize you're shouting, your voice echoing through the cave, "I! AM! SO! DONE! WITH! THIS! SHIT! YOU! COWARD!" You stop, heaving in your breath, the instructors head unrecognizable as more than a gooey mesh on the front of your shield, the man who trained you to fight, no, this cowardly thing, masquerading as a human, dead now, by your hand. You stumble to your feet, retrieving your warhammer from the post.

Hey, i haven't done this shit in a while, how long do we have until the bump limit? cause I may be able to do a second thread tonight.

>>40629477
eh, I archived anyway. You guys want the next post in a new thread? or should we ride this one into oblivion?
>>
>>40629531

We're on page 6 so we have plenty of time before we need a lifeboat.
>>
>>40629560
Oblivion it is! back to writing. gonna have to break for dinner in twenty minutes, let's see if I can't crank the next post out by then.
>>
WELP, my browser crashed, so there goes what I had written, and now I have to eat dinner. I'll be back in about an hour with the next post, so in the mean time, talk amongst yourselves, debate character personalities, where you want to go with this quest, give constructive criticism etc. I'll catch up when I get back.
>>
>>40629958
Hah, that's why you type it in word, or even, god help you, Notepad!

That being said.

SHIT.
>>
Oh, one more thing to maybe stir up some discussion, it IS possible to get jasmine and Ergon to leave with you, but it depends on what you do. Ergon will be relatively easy, Jasmine will be MUCH harder. so feel free to discuss that.
>>
>>40630093
>Jasmine will be MUCH harder
One would think she would care for her own voice more than we do.
Worst case scenario we give her a certain ring as a gift.
>>
>>40630093
I'll give you one of my fingers, if you'd like.

She either stays with us, or becomes a recurring antagonist who we have to subtly corrupt and convert over time.
>>
>>40630093
Page 8 now, when you come back a new thread might be needed
>>
>>40629958
OP are you perhaps a real Blackguard.
>>
>>40630222
Reoccurring antagonist best option by far
>>
>>40630228
maybe
>>40630137
You don't actually know the ritual that you would need to heal her voice yet or have enough power to cast it yet.

>>40629284
Alright, looks like my dinner plans have been postponed due to my oven committing suicide. Why is all my tech breaking today? So here's the next story post
down on you oppressively, maybe... maybe you should just lie down for a moment... wait. No! Ergon! Jasmine! The bandits! You dash to the ladder, hooking your warhammer onto your belt as you go. climbing out into the cathedral, you're met with a horrible sight. There's blood everywhere, several dead initiates lie strewn across the floor, some of them look cut down as they tried to run, Your fellow initiates, how could this happen in the ladies house?! Two scruffy looking men are picking their way through the bodies, their weapons covered with blood. Luckily the tunnel was behind the alter, and the marauders haven't seen you yet, you can still hear screaming and the sounds of battle from outside,
What do you do?
>Silently rush the nearest man and kill him with your warhammer, low-medium DC thanks to the sounds of battle from outside, and the fact that he's facing away from you
>fuck it, the shield worked last time, throw it at the closest bastard, High DC, if you make it you gain a new feat.
>Try to sneak around and get the axeman who's standing farther away High DC
>>
>>40630462

Silently rush the first guy.

Also picking the high DC option for rule of cool is a great way to be retarded.
