Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you bested an opponent in single combat and were rewarded your Grandmaster's robes as a result.

It is currently the 12th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You unfold your robes, holding them out in front of you to get a better look. They're a deep purple in color, with a repeating geometric pattern wrought in gold serving as the hem of each individual layer. They're made of thin silk, several layers swen together. At the neck is a ring of fabric with small golden beads attached to the hem, and finally at the waist is a blue sash decorated with gold stripes. You presume the sash is meant to indicate that you're a Water Grandmaster.

Carefully refolding the robes you drape the garment over one arm, bowing low to the judges, then to Suresh, and then to your opponent and touching two fingers first to your forehead and then to your chest each time. After bowing to each of them you stand tall, unable to stop yourself from grinning like an idiot. First you address the judges. “Thank you, all of you. Truly this is an honor.” Then your attention turns to your opponent, Grandmistress Aisha. “And I must say, you're perhaps the toughest opponent I've ever faced. Usually people give up once their internal organs are liquefied.”

Aisha shakes her head, holding up a hand to beg pause. “Please, don't remind me. I thought I was going to open my mouth and spew chunks of blood and flesh out of my mouth. I never wanted to know what my own jellied lungs tasted like.” She seems to fight back a wave of nausea before speaking again. “I will say you're impressive as well. Most men beg for mercy once the blood starts to boil in their veins. You didn't even attempt to control the damage I caused, merely attacked me in turn.”

Suresh interrupts the conversation, his voice echoing in the vastness of the cavern. “In my capacity as the Archmagos I hereby declare this test concluded. Judges, I thank you for your attendance. You are free to leave whenever you wish.” Suresh turns his attention to you. “Stick around for a while, Mikhael. I want to talk to you about what your new position entails.”

The judges stand, each of them descending the platform on which they were seated to congratulate you personally. They shake your hand, and welcome you to the fold. One of the men, a human perhaps in his fifties with short, greying hair and a trimmed beard, waxes on nostalgically about his own test for Water Grandmastery. Apparently whilst impaled through the abdomen by a pillar of ice he severed his opponent's spinal cord, leaving him completely paralyzed and too low on vys to heal himself.

The woman among them, a hunchbacked old Elf probably well into her hundreds, hugs you feebly around the waist, telling you that you remind her of her great grandson before the Wars took him. She hobbles off mumbling to herself about those damned Hedui and their mage hunters, and killing their women and children.

The last of the judges is another elf, probably in eighties or nineties. Fairly young for a Vatis. He simply shakes your hand, mumbling a congratulations, and then wanders off after the old woman. Upon catching up with her she whacks him in the shin with her cane, eliciting a yelp of pain. You suppose they know one another.

Which leaves only Suresh, Aisha, and yourself in the room. Turning to Aisha you pose a question before Suresh can drag your attention away. “A friend and I are going out for drinks later, would you be interested in joining us? I feel it's only fair after the fight we had that I force my friend to buy you drinks.”

She smiles. It's a pretty smile, and she's attractive in her own way. She's flat chested, but fit while remaining feminine. “I may decide to join you. It has been some time since I last allowed myself a moment's relaxation. Where would I meet you, were I interested?”

>>
I was about to give up hope.

You gesture vaguely. “Oh, I don't know. At the entrance to the Academy? Seems the most logical place. We'll probably leave around night fall.”

She nods succinctly. “Very well, if I decide to come along I will meet you there.” At that moment Suresh clears her throat and, after bowing to the Archmagos, Aisha turns to leave.

Suresh grips you affectionately by the shoulder, turning towards the cave entrance and motioning for you to walk with him. “I congratulate you on your success, Mikhael. It was a good show, people do love a bit of blood and gore getting tossed about during these test. Though I fear the rats are going to get a taste for your and Aisha's flesh. Regardless, I wished to discuss your new privileges as a Grandmaster. I didn't really elaborate during the ceremony.”

You exit out into the garden. The crowd of kids that had gathered around the cave entrance to watch your fight have more or less dispersed, though a few linger. Suresh doesn't pay them any mind. “As I said, you'll have the protection of the academy and access to our library. When I say protection, I mean it. Through thick and thin, regardless of the circumstances, the Academy will offer you a safe haven. We look out for our own. If you ever need help undertaking an expedition, or wish to have your research published, merely contact me and I'll see it done. Assuming of course I have the resources.”

You interrupt to pose a question. “So, say I need a handful of assistants for an experiment I'm carrying out, or to deal with the tedious work of excavating a ruin. All I need to do is contact you and you'll have some lackeys sent my way?”

Suresh chuckles lightly, patting you on the back. “I'd prefer you didn't think of them as lackeys, but yes we can provide you with trained Vatis for your work. We have a wealth of recent graduates with little to do besides study and seek Mastery of their elements. For more complex work we may need to discuss some sort of partnership with the resident faculty but something could be arranged. Anyway, it would come at no cost to you.”

You could conceivably think of a few situations where that might come in handy. Suresh resumes talking once it becomes obvious you don't have a follow up question.”As for the library, you can feel free to check out any book you like for as long as you like. Now, you can't just take books. There's a limit of three books, after that you need to pay a check out fee which you'll get back upon returning them. We'd prefer you didn't keep them for more than a week but we understand certain projects take time.”

You exit the gardens, into the front courtyard of the Academy. “Now, as for our facilities we have a forge, a number of isolation chambers for meditation. If you've never used one, they're wonderful. We recovered them a few years back from a Rhynian ruin. They're metal pods lined with this sort of foam. When you lay down inside the foam expands. It feels like you're floating in nothing, you can't see nor hear anything. Wonderful if you're trying to focus. We also have the gardens. Dangerous artifacts are kept in containment but as a Grandmaster you can access them, or use the containment chambers for your own experiments.”

Suresh shrugs, withdrawing his arm from your shoulders as the two of you near the entrance. “You'll always have a room here, of course. If you'd like we could give you a position teaching, the offer remains open, though I doubt you're interested in settling down. Especially since you've been unbanished. If you ever want to know anything about the current projects the Academy is working on, all you have to do is ask. Other than that, I wish you luck.” He clears his throat. “Now that that's out of the way, thanks for your advice earlier. It allowed me to make a real breakthrough. I think I've finally managed to craft a metamagic to target the mind”

You raise an eyebrow. “So I was right, the mind arises from the interplay between the brain and the soul?”

Suresh nods. “So it would seem. Essentially my method relies on targeting not the soul nor the head nor the brain, but rather a sort of... thin veneer which covers the whole of a person. It was difficult to pin down at first but I noticed connections between the soul and the rest of the body. The mind is not so much this monolithic entity but rather seems to be a conglomerate. You think with every part of yourself, essentially, and then your brain correlates everything.”

Huh, you wouldn't have thought that to be the case. Interesting, though. “Do you think I could get a copy of the metamagic, once you write the scroll for it that is?”

Suresh waves a hand dismissively. “Of course, of course. I've already got a rough draft written but I'm doing some editing. I want to draw something to provide a visual aid, but I'm having trouble replicating what I saw. Next time you visit Anthus, I should have it for you.”

The two of you enter the Academy and agree to see one another soon before going your separate ways. You reach out to Demetrios once you're away from the Archmagos, briefly confirming that you're on for tonight. The conversation is short, as he's in the middle of teaching a class, but he assures you that he's looking forward to it.

After the connection is severed you head for the student dormitories in the hopes of saying goodbye to Aylin, but a thought occurs to you. You could sell the dragon scales you have with you. You'd still have the entire tale covered in scales for Skull Kid and Fulvia. That would provide you some funds to pay off her tuition and perhaps get her a gift to remember you buy. You recall she wanted some furs to decorate her room with.

>Sell the scales, and pay her tuition. She doesn't need a gift.
>You may as well buy her a gift, it'll be a nice gesture if nothing else.
>Wouldn't she prefer it if you killed the beast yourself? Go hunting in the plains outside of Anthus.

You decide that it's not really a proper gift if you just buy her a hide in some store. No, this has to come from the heart and that means you have to kill the creature yourself, skin it, and present it to her while it's still fresh. You're not really completely sure how to go about turning a hide into a rug, you think it's sort of like tanning, but you imagine Aylin probably knows. It seems like something she'd have learned in Khmedi. Before it burned down, of course.

You head up to your rooms in the Faculty Dormitories, briefly depositing your new robes inside. After all, you don't want them getting torn so soon after you got them. That done you return to the foyer and march out the double doors of the Academy, finding your guar crouched with her legs beneath her in front of a trough of slop. It looks like someone recently scrubbed her scales, there's not nearly as much dirt covering her as you remember.

Walking up to the beast you climb into the saddle, and as if by instinct she rises to her feet. It's a simple matter to untie her reins from the hitching post and spur her onward, towards the Academy gates. You get some sidelong looks from the guards as you ride past, likely because your clothes are absolutely soaked through with blood, but you don't pay them any mind.

You manage to make it out of the city without being stopped and questioned but it's a close thing. At one point you nearly caused a woman to feint just at the sight of you, and a gaggle of children ran screaming as you turned a corner. Still, this is a good thing. You'll be able to intimidate the creatures you fight. Either that, or the scent of fresh blood will draw them to you as flies to honey. Either way, it's perfect.

As you sit upon the edge of the plains, the ancient cobbled rode you're riding along carving through the endless field of grass like a scar, you can't help but feel that your chances of finding anything worthy of hunting are quite low. The mountains, on the other hand, draw your eye. You know there is a breed of large furry cattle with massive horns which roam the mountains. You imagine dragons have devastated their population, but their white fur was incredibly soft. If you could just find one of those, you'd have the perfect gift.

Unfortunately, the trip to the mountains and back would probably take you at least a day, probably two. With a sigh you turn your sights elsewhere, spurring your guar off the road and into the grass. You ride in a vaguely northeasterly direction for a time, releasing a gentle pulse of Nature magic every now and again to see if you can't detect any signs of life. At one point you hear squealing, and the crack of lightning. Curious, you attach the stone sleeve that had once been your enchanted gauntlet to your arm before turning your guar towards the sound.

(2/3)
>>
You see the smoke and the flame long before you reach the source of the wild fire. It doesn't take more than a wave of your hand to clear a path for your guar, but what you see on the other side is disconcerting. A dragon, likely younger than most, is feasting on the burnt remnants of a herd of 'boar'. Those creatures Chrys told you about when you first met. Its head snaps up as you enter the clearing, turning towards you. You prepare yourself for a fight as it opens its mouth and lightning begins to dance between its jagged teeth.

Then there's a roar which seems to echo across the plains. Your eyes are drawn upwards just in time to see the distant form of a beast, vaguely humanoid, diving towards the clearing. You can't make it out at first, and the dragon seems just as confused as you are. As the creature draws closer you start to make out a heavy rack of horns, and a twisted face. You spur your guar away just as the dragon starts to struggle skywards, but the creature is zeroed in. It snatches the dragon from the air moments before it crashes into the earth with enough force to nearly throw you from your saddle, though you maintain your seat by some miracle.

Blood soaks the clearing as the beast rears back, the dragon's head clutched in its maw. The only way you can describe it is monstrous. Its has white fur running along its back and a sort of soft down coating its limbs, marking it as a creature of the mountains. Its wings are reminiscent of a bat's wings, leathery and translucent. It's easily as large as some of the dragons you've seen, perhaps the size of a small house.
(3/4)
>>
Its eyes are fixed on you, its long tail lashing out behind it. The tail alone looks like it could do some damage. It opens its mouth, a deafening roar escaping its gaping maw, flecks of spittle and blood accompanying the wall of noise. Somehow, you don't think it's friendly.

You start to channel vys, but as you feel out the monster's insides with Water magic a thought occurs to you. This creature has at least six organs too many, and nothing is in the right place. You start to corrode something that you think is the heart based on the way it expands and contracts, but instead it's the stomach. Acid spills out into its body cavity, corroding its other organs even as the monster rushes at you.

You latch onto one of its four lungs based on the organs which expand as it takes a deep breath to roar at you. In the few seconds you manage to focus before you're forced to spur your guar forward you manage to fill its lungs full of rotting holes, but for every three you open one or two close. Something is actively working against your efforts. Could this beast know Water magic?

>Enemies Remaining: 1x Gargoyle (Gut Wound, Wounded)

>Vys Pool: (32/56)

Unfortunately you're forced to cut the flow of vys as it leaps at you, its wings snapping out and pushing it onward. You spur your guar on desperately, just barely managing to avoid of of its claws as it swipes past you. You resolve to keep on the move, your body held tight against the back of your guar as it gallops around the field of battle.

The monster digs in its claws, and you feel a massive burst of vys. The ground in front of you yawns open, a sinkhole appearing from nowhere. So not only does the creature apparently know Water magic, but Earth as well.

>Jerk back on your reigns, if your guar breaks a leg you'll lose the advantage of mobility.
>Spur your guar faster, perhaps it can jump the gap?

You don't even spare a thought, you just focus your vys through the stone sleeve covering your right arm. A bridge quickly forms itself across the gap and you gallop across it undeterred, much to the Gargoyle's frustration. Growling deep in its chest it snaps out its wings and starts to take bounding leaps towards you. With every step it pushes it flaps its wings and after a few false starts it manages to get off the ground, swooping past you before looping around and trying to gain altitude.

You slow your guar a fraction to get a better look at what the creature seems to be doing. It keeps circling around you, flapping its wings and trying to gain altitude. You think it's trying to perform another one of those dive attacks that it used to kill the dragon, but it needs height to do it.

>Your Turn!
>Enemies Remaining: Gargoyle (Wounded)
>Status:
>Vys Pool: (32/56)

You've got a moment's piece as the gargoyle circles you from above, you might take it as an opportunity to leech from your surroundings and replenish your vys pool. However, that might give the creature the opportunity to attack. As you're debating what you ought to do, a roar pierces the air. The Gargoyle has ceased to gain altitude, and instead just circles you perhaps a hundred feet above.

You channel vys, extending tendrils of your reserves skywards. They snap forward, attacking the joints of the creature's wings as it circles high above you. The magic coils around the creature's limbs, eating through the flesh with a violent intensity. Its flesh isn't nearly as resilient as dragon hide, although you find that its bones seem oddly resistant to the magic.

Eventually you hear a distant snap as one of the wings falls off, and then a second as the other follows it. The beast starts to spiral through the air as it falls, kicking its limbs out desperately in an attempt to turn itself even as blood streams from its wounds. However, it succeeds only in making itself tumble more rapidly through the air. When it crashes it does so head first, its horns kick up a cloud of dirt and debris.

You wait, watching. The creature doesn't seem to be getting up so you spur your guar forward, approaching it cautiously. A pulse of nature magic shoes that it's still alive, though probably pretty severely wounded after a fall like that. When you get close you find it laying still with its head buried in the dirt, one arm twisted at an odd angle. You have a rock rise from the ground and pelt it in the side, but it doesn't stir. You do it a few more times for good measure, but still it lays still. Seems you've knocked it unconscious.

Huh. It's a tough bastard, if nothing else. Most creatures would've snapped their necks after a fall like that. You wonder if it's an escaped Rhynain experiment, like Pidjatan Lions are?

>Finish it off by stabbing it through the neck and letting it bleed out.

shit sucked. At least because we couldn't wear armor with it. Also because ring has A LOT more benefits.
Going up that mountain can and will be made a joke to do again, if we stick to forms meditation. once we gain another rank in combat samjan martial arts.
>>
>>40630350
Also, remember how the warlock armors work.

Vys, the Varistha argues, is a type of poison, and just like poison one may build of a tolerance for it. As evidence for this he provides the Warlock Armor. When worn by those with a relatively low tolerance for extended periods of time, their bodies are wracked by discomfort and disease, exhaustion and lethargy. He even reports that some have died or committed suicide while suffering from an overabundant supply of vys, while at the same time remarking that such an overabundance can become addicting.

Our body, the only time it ever suffered from oversaturation, had the Warlock armor and the meditation poultice running through it. We're obviously capable of handling a fair bit of excess. The ring is capable of siphoning off excess once it gets into our body. This means we can wear the Heavy Warlock armor without worrying about excess or oversaturation.

Confirmed fucking fact pleb. Entity feeds on the excess vys our body generates. We generate excess vys when our supply is full. Ring drains that vys. Do the math.
>>
>>40630685
The ring will TRY to drain that vys, but it'll be fighting the entity for it. It may slow the rate at which it it feeds. But that thing is growing stronger and stronger and the only way to stop it is to get rid of it. All the half measures and work arounds are temporary measures.

I want it for the self charging Vys battery, the (possible) slowing of the growth of the Entity is just a minor bonus.

Yes. But I am not sure it would be wise to try and put it on now.
possibly once we get a bit more vys.
Just to be sure there isn't any excess, flowing into the entity, that the ring can't suck in.
Cause shit son. Heavy brings in 10vys/hour. I doubt our ring will be able to pull in more than 8/hour. even with spirit material+ gem.

>>
>>40630825
Well once that does happen. Could be interesting, to see how things go.
Also using the warlock armor sort of blocks off the emotions the entity throws at us. Making us less passivly angryier all the time. And more level headed.
It helps that with the ring, we're slowly but surely gaining back our sanity. Further helping us fight the entity.

Man I agree with you.
And the ring will 100% slow the growth of the entity's power. If not completely stop it's growth.

I am also hoping the metal meditation that is cleaning our soul. Is helping some how. Since it has to do with cleansing everything but our self.
>>
>>40631093
Bullshit, and i bet you are also gonna tell me The Last Guardian is coming out as well. ;_;
>>
>>40631109
It won't stop it. I think that at the very best we could hope for is to cut it's growth in half.

The Metal stuff will help us resist its influences when it trys to influence us, but I doubt it's passively doing anything to the entity.
>>
>>40631092
Me saying that doesn't mean It is not.
I am one of the anons that wants to head into the desert NOW.
Not only is Dhatu's stone there.
But also the armor, that is the key to the vault. I want BOTH.
Giving Mahana the vault will empower Mahana, making him of greater use to us. Easily making the enchants he makes more useful, as well as a powerful ally.

>>
First you cast a paralysis spell, a pretty strong one too. You pump a few extra vys into the spell just to be certain it works. The creature doesn't respond, but it was more of a precaution than anything else. Then, you dismount your guar and approach the beast cautiously. As you channel vys the skin of your left forearm begins to shift, black ridges rising from the skin to wriggle forward like so many tentacles struggling to burst from the surface of your skin. As you tap the monster on the back, the tentacles vanish. In their place a connection is formed between you and the creature's reserves.

You leech, and leech, and keep leeching. You manage to top off your reserves well before you deplete the creature's own. Casting a spell to manipulate the leech effect, you shift the 'exit point' as it were of leech vys away from your reserves to the ruby pendant where it sits in your bag. After several minutes of just draining away at this creature's reserves you feel the flow of vys through the connection falter, and sever it fully.
>Vys Pool: (56/56)
>Ruby Pendant [105 Vys Stored]

Cautiously you pluck the ruby pendant from your woven sack and hold it up to the light. The gem glows with a sort of violent, internal light but the prongs surrounding it don't extend to pierce your fingers or anything. You drop it back into your back and resolve not to worry about it before turning your attention back to the creature.

You channel Water magic, its wounds knitting closed and its broken bones mending. It barely cost any vys at all to mend its hide back to pristine conditions. When you've finished there's not a scratch on it, and the creature remains unconscious. You might even say the pelt is a little fuller than it was beforehand, but that may simply be your imagination. Running your fingers through its fur you find that it's surprisingly silky, for a beast so vile.

You don't bother finishing it off, instead you use Earth magic to start skinning it. You slice it down the middle, and along each of its limbs. In a matter of a few minutes you've pulled its skin away entirely and left it a twitching mass of exposed muscle tissue. Honestly, you feel a little bad. It was still alive, even if it was unconscious. You haven't freed the hide completely though. Instead you're debating whether to cut off the head and keep it as a trophy, or remove the hide entirely. To be honest, the hide from the creature's face would lack fur and be uncanny anyway, but you don't know Aylin's preferences.

You cut off the last bit of hide and start channeling magic, healing it. It takes a while but eventually you restore the monster's hide fully, the hair coming in thick and luxurious. Then you skin it again. You repeat the process five times in all, giving you six of the hides. Each one is enormously heavy, but you manage to drag them over and stack them on top of one another. All in all you have probably a few thousand square feet of skin, way more than necessary. You could line very surface of Aylin's room with these hides.

Now you come to the task of transporting them. You estimate that, total, they weigh several hundred pounds. You resolve to worry about it later, and instead sever the head of the strange humanoid beast to kill it once and for all. It dies silently, without kicking or fighting at all. It was paralyzed, so you suppose that makes sense. Then you skin the dragon as well, for good measure. It's significantly smaller than the other creature, only a little larger than a man.

You get the bright idea to build a cart, and animate a few dozen men to help you load. Your first dozen or so attempts end in failure, the wagon breaking shortly after you load the corpses into it. Eventually you work out a design with numerous supports around the wheels and a base reinforced by stone and metal that holds both the hides, the corpses, and the head trophies. It wasn't easy though. Then you hitch it up to your guar and mount up. However, as you dig your heels into the guar's flanks it struggles to move more than a few steps with the unbelievably heavy load strapped to its back.

Fortunately you get another idea, and create a half dozen other guar made from stone to help pull. You hitch them to the wagon using metal bars and, in unison, they begin to move. This time you manage to make progress, pretty good progress in fact. All told the effort leaves your pendant pretty significantly drained, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
>Ruby Pendant [49 Vys Stored]
>>
Getting back to the city requires constant maintenance and focus. As the hours tick by more and more vys is drained from your reserves an, in turn, the pendant. Eventually you reach the gates. You're surprised when the guards don't stop you, but apparently the six pelts crowned by corpses and severed heads in the back of your cart puts them off. Indeed, the entire city seems to give you a wide berth. Traffic practically rushes to get out of your way.

You make it to the academy in record time, though getting up the mountain is true challenge. As you roll through the gates a crowd of students and faculty gather to inspect your grisly cargo, most muttering amongst themselves. Only after you've made it to the gates do you let the construct guar collapse, turning to loose dirt without your will to maintain them. You unhitch your actual guar from the cart and dismount, letting it get some wet slop in its stomach as a reward.
>Ruby Pendant [37 Vys Stored]

As for the cart itself, you're a little at a loss as to what to do here.

>Hears stories of a Crazy Water GM on a whim went out to kill a dragon, then skin it 5 times over with the same dragon, before giving 3 of the skins to a random war orphan girl he just adopted.
> Prof: "Yup that's Mik alright."
> SK: ".....wait what? How?...oh right. Magic."
> Darzi: "That's insane! why would he do that on a whim?"
> Chys: "I do hope he skinned it properly."
> Mortia: "He did 'that' with 'that' by 'this'? Why didn't I think of it before?"
> Rasim: "BWHAHAHAHAHA!!!!"
> Fulvia: "Comparing the facts on what I have on my companion, and the very distorted version of the story you have recounted, I can safely conclude the story of whom you are telling me is indeed referring to Mikael."
