>Episode 2: Get a Man out of Jail, and He'll Become a Jailer.

One of the perks of having been the heir of one of the most mystically powerful realms in the world was that, among the torturous lessons and agonizing training, flying at an incredible speed on a few hundred pounds of enchanted material was nothing you didn’t do before. And it was a good thing since you, Astar, slayer of the blind, had elected to use a levitation stone to conclude your daring escape from the island you have spent the last two years imprisoned on, and are currently flying over the salty waters of an unknown sea, or perhaps an ocean, and are only separated from a certain doom by the thaumaturgic secrets of a bunch of madmen.

Still, the day could not have been better! If you ignored the wound in your back, which you thankfully managed to stop from bleeding, your temporary deafness, from which you are starting to recover, the strained muscles of right harm, your painful left hand, the bloody and tattered prison uniform, which was tailored for an Astar two years younger and with twenty pounds of muscles less, your ravenous hunger, the fact you have no idea where you are, and your total lack of hygiene, which even failed to be attractive.
>>
>>40638877

Yet, the situation seems to improve, as your half-elf eyes finally catch sight of something on the horizon, in the late afternoon. A coast, by the look of it mostly cliffs, with a forest on the top. Approaching, your suspicion is soon confirmed, and the impressive white of the stony cliff contrasts with the dark green of the pines. The sight of the first plants you seen in two years threaten to make you burst with joy once more, but now is not the time. You’re pressed by the time, and as soon as whoever was in charge of keeping you locked up learns you’ve escaped, they will send people.

If it wasn’t already done.

>What do you do?

>Get in the forest. There will certainly be food and water.

>Follow the coast to a settlement. You need healing and shelter.

>Fly above the forest and look around. More opportunities the further you can see, although it’s not necessarily a discrete way

You decides to enter the forest, effortlessly guiding your levitation stone between the trees. In your mind, the three heads of Pyrovoi, the chimera you bound your soul to, express their approval. The creature never liked water.

As for yourself, you find yourself more at ease that you have been for years, your elf blood reacting to the environment. Your heartbeat grows lowers, your senses become sharper, and your mind races, analyzing your surroundings. It only takes a few minutes to find a stream, allowing you to quench your thirst and to begin to clean yourself of the coagulating blood on your body.

But your stomach informs you anything more will have to wait, and every ounces of instinct you have agree with it. You have to eat.
On the other hand, your hearing, that you finally got back, informs you of a repeated sound, at some distance. Heavy hits resonating against a piece of wood, in a deliberate rythm. A woodcutter, probably.

Did dad splice a little orc into us then?
>>

Nah, we're half elven though. Dad apparently never explained how he managed to pull that off though, apparently in this setting interbreeding is pretty rare and elves aren't very fertile to begin with.

When we rescue him from Hell I'm sure he'll spill his secrets.
>>
>>40640913
It was a joke on the reference from LOTR movies. Remember in the Two towers when the orc boss who captured Merry and Pippin killed one of his subordinates for trying to eat them? Cannibalism ensued.

I'm fully away of our true lineage and the fact Dad never showed affection to anyone. In fact I'd be happy letting the old man rot unless he gave us a compelling reason to get him out. If he didn't try the whole dark god shit we'd still be living the high life and the empire would be in tact.

In the forest, few beings could boast to be stronger than Old Greenwind. Silent as a shadow and quick as lightning, carnivorous like all the Green Cicon, it had spent the last century terrorizing beasts and sapient beings alike, its emerald feathers becoming the final sight of many. This massive bird had spawned a large majority of the local legends and of the forest’s Cicon population. For the moment, in this end of afternoon, it was busy resting on a branch of its current favorite tree, a small distance from the path the humans took to travel in the forest, waiting for a prey and lording over all. Yes, Old Greenwind was big, powerful, feared by all, and pretty proud of it.

And this is why it was incredibly surprised when it suddenly felt an iron grip around its long neck, an instant before your second hand broke its spine.

Ah, now we’re talking, you think as the levitation stone descended to the ground, as per your instruction. It’s the first time you see a Cicon this big! But gods and angels, there was no way you would have let it escape. You remember eating those things, back in the days, and they were pretty tasty. The cooks could only do so much with you ordering to be served raw meat, but they always managed. Of course, you think as you starts to pluck out the bird’s impressive green feathers, your elf stomach will make things easier, for once. You doubt you’ll manage to make fire in this moist woodlands.

Suddenly, your senses alert you of something. An humanoid, close. Too close. Crap.
>>

We're gonna show up with this things head on a stick and become a local hero

You turns around, only to see a small human, at a short distance. Cheap clothes, carrying a lantern and a basket containing a bottle, no sign of exhaustion or of labor… probably a child sent in the woods to help someone come back, you think.

You look at each other for a while, him with awe in his eyes, his mouth agape, you wondering what to do with him, years of combat and corpse disposal training coming to mind. Eventualy, he is the one breaking the silence.

“Hum, I’m sorry, sir, but… did you kill Old Greenwind?”, he asks.

“Yes”, you answer with as friendly a smile you can muster, “I did. It got me good, though. Do you know a healer, young one?” The kid looks at you, understanding painting itself on his face as he sees the states of your clothes and the hasty bandage around your waist.

“That’s INCREDIBLE!”, screams the child, his excitement of before making him frantic. he starts jumping around saying something sounding like "oh my gosh", over and over. Noticing your waiting expression, he adds, in a more subdued manner: “Right, a healer. Let’s go find Pa, and then we can go back to the village. Can you walk?” You nod, and with renewed excitement he signs you to follow him. You do so, putting the bird’s corpse on your shoulders. You are a bit worried about leaving your levitation stone there, but you’re sure you will be able to find it again.

He turns to you and says, his eyes full of wonder: "I never met a hero before!"
>>
>>40642555
"Me too!"
>>
>>40642555

"Me neither, kid! I guess I got lucky, this critter must have been getting old."

We should probably play up our humble side until we have full magical abilities again. If nothing else we should shoot for some basic equipment and then try to find our old evil pals who have scattered to the wind.
>>
>>40642555

The journey to his dad is thankfully a short one. When you first see him, the tall, muscular man seems to be searching from something, his face grim. But it instantly bright up as he hear his son’s shout, followed by the small one running into his open arms. “Anter, my boy!”, he says with a deep voice, accepting his child’s embrace before hugging back. “I forgot the lantern again, right? Hope your Ma isn’t too mad…” Noticing you for the first time, he stops, a suspicious look on his face.

“Pa, Pa, Pa, Sir Elf killed Old Greenwind! Like in the stories!”, exclaim his son. At first not getting what he means, the tall man’s jaw drop as he looks more closely at your burden. “I’ll be damned blue and gray. Is.. is it really the Cicon?”, he asks. He approaches, bewildered, and examines it closer. “By Dionam, it IS Greenwind!” And with this, he grabs your shoulders and hugs you. “Thank you, thank you, Sir Elf. I can’t believe it, but thank you for killing that damned bird.” Before you can react, he lifts you off the ground and put you on his shoulders. “Lead the way, Anter.”, he says as the last light of the day start disappearing. “We’re bringing our friend to the village!”
>>
>>40642848

Of the trip to the village, you don’t remember much, outside of the happy father and son, arriving to the dozen of wooden houses near the coast, creating quite the commotion. The villlagers soon surround you, wondering what is happening, looking at the dead bird and at yourself with awe and fear, and wishpering between them. Anter’s father carries you to the village’s biggest house, which apparently serves both as tavern and town hall, before letting you down in front of an old, if still tall and imposing man. The look of confusion on his face, where you notice an eyepatch, is immediately replaced by one of absolute shock as he see what you’re carrying.

“Pa”, the woodcutter says, “this man here killed Old Greenwind! We’re finally safe!” At this, the assembled crowd bursts in a cry of joy, which is enough to shake the old man out of his shock. “Well then, young man”, he says, apparently out of habit, “why don’t you tell us how it happened?”

You tell a short story about how you managed to dodge the Cicon’s beak at the last moment when it tried to backstab you, and how you killed it in the struggle that followed. You conclude saying it was probably getting old.

“That’s right!”, shouts an old man, passably drunk. “It was getting old and slow! Last month, I crossbow’d it, and it didn’t even kill me!” Others people nods in agreement, apparently satisfied by the story. The man with the eyepatch, on the other hand, gets up, grabs your wrist, lift your harm in the air and screams: “Three hoorays for our hero!” The villagers are more than happy to oblige, and the entire village cheers you. You can even see people starting to prepare what looks like a party.

“Thank you, Sir Elf, for getting rid of the beast!", the strong old man continues. " You’ll always be welcomed, here. Ask for anything, and if we can provide it, we’ll do it. Now, concerning the bird’s body… I’m willing to give you ten silver mats in exchange.” Well, it’s certainly a good sum, especially given what you’ve seen of the community. “Well, mister, ten silver sounds more than enough. Thank you.”, you say with your best smile. This prompts the crowd to cheer again, and the old man to pat your back. “Now, forgive me for asking, but if someone could patch me up, it would be great. Also, if you would be so kind to let me have a meal, some spare clothes and a bath, it would be grand. I’m not sure the ‘soaked with your own blood’ look suit me, to be honest.” The crowd giggles at your… joke, while in the depth of your mindscape, Pyrovoi cringes. You mentaly tell her to shut up. “Very well,” says the old man, “it’ll be done.”

Soon, you are introduced to a young blond man, called Rech, apprentice of the local healer (who is apparently traveling somewhere else for the moment). After examining you for a bit, he rubs some kind of blue-green paste on your wounds, and the pain disappears near immediately. After a few minutes, you can use your hand and arm without any trouble, and a cautious probing reveal the cut in your back is now entirely closed.

Whoever is teaching this man is doing a good job, you think as you thank him.

On the other hand, the meal reveals itself to be less than satisfactory. You’ve eaten enough wheat gruel in jail, and only the direst necessity force you to eat this one. At least there is a few fish, this time, and you manage to talk the villagers out of cooking them. Still, you’re left to bath in what appear to be a half-barrel with an upset stomach. But you must say the water does some good, cleaning the blood, the sweat, the salt, the dirt and the various things you accumulated on you since the last time the jailers gave you a bucket of water… three months ago, maybe?
>>
>>40645652

In any case, after two hours left alone in what appears to be the old man’s bathroom, you are clean, rested, in full health and ready to do what comes next. You find a purse containing the promised coins and the clothes, or more accurately mismatched shoes, an old tunic and a pair of wooly pants roughly your size, with a chaperon like you can see field laborers wear. At least it’ll hide your ears and your collar.

Now, what to do?

You can pefectly eat it when it's cooked, it's just have an unpleasant texture and no taste to speak of outside of coal (if roasted), oil (if fried) or water (if boiled).

Note that it's like this for anything you eat, not only meat.

>How many people knew our face before we were imprisoned?

A lot of people, but not to the point people recognised you if you went on the street without indicating who you were.

Beside, you lost almost all the fat you had, grew a lot and got a lot more muscular. To say nothing on what the two years without light did to your skin and the way your hair grew.
