The sun has set over your town, and you climb into bed.

Tonight you are expecting someone by the name of Koenma to appear in your dreams, apparently to explain the specifics of being a Spirit Detective, and give you some information on your new powers.

You aren't sure what to expect, but Kaya referred to him as "Lord Koenma", so you've at least gathered that he's somebody pretty important. You remember the palace you saw in the Spirit World, and wonder if that's where this mysterious lord dwells. An impressive palace such as that surely has an equally impressive lord within it, right?

You close your eyes, drifting into a deep slumber, and finding yourself in what looks like an office. There are large doors behind you, and a desk in front of you, behind which appears to be an empty chair. Glancing around the room, you see no sign of anybody else.

Perhaps you got here early?

"Hey, down here!" you hear from in front of you.

Looking down, you see what appears to be a toddler dressed in purple. He wears a hat with some sort of symbol on it, and "Jr" written on the bottom of it. In his mouth is a pacifier.

"Yo," he greets, waving at you.

>A. Ask if he is Koenma

You weren't sure what to expect when you met with Lord Koenma, but it certainly wasn't this. In a situation as bizarre and insane as this, there's really only one proper reaction.

Laughter.

Koenma looks rather peeved as you laugh in his face, your body trembling as you vocalize the humor of it all. Still, despite his obvious anger, he refrains from saying or doing anything until you calm yourself down, at which point he lets out an exasperated sigh.

"If you're finished, then let's get down to business," he tells you. "I am Koenma, son of King Enma. I have been around for centuries, and, along with my father, rule over Spirit World."

He turns around, making his way around the desk and sitting down in his chair. "I'm also the one who decided to make you Spirit Detective, so consider me your boss."

He folds his hands in his lap. "Now, I'm sure Kaya has told you a bit about being a Spirit Detective, but I'm also sure you have some questions."

>A. What's there to ask about? You hunt down and capture demons. You've already done it once.

>B. Ask him how you're supposed to fight demons. You're pretty strong, but Kaya says they get a lot tougher.

"How am I supposed to fight demons?" you ask him. "I'm pretty strong, but Kaya says they get a lot tougher."

"Yes, demons can become incredibly powerful," Koenma confirms. "I understand that you already encountered one. Ishpa was an E class demon, the weakest variety there is. Above him are demons of D, C, and B classes. And the strongest of all demons belong to the A class. Demons like that possess the strength of gods from various religions."

You're starting to feel less confident about this.

"But don't worry," Koenma says. "As a human with Spiritual Awareness, your own strength is nothing to sneeze at. You defeated Ishpa easily, and the more you fight and train, the more powerful you should become. If you develop techniques, you'll be even better equipped to battle demons."

He smiles. "And, of course, you'll get some cool equipment to help you in your missions."

"Do I get paid?" you ask him.

"What?" Koenma asks in return. "Do you get paid? That's what you want to know? Not about your powers or equipment, but whether or not you'll get paid?"

In your defense, if you're going to be risking your life and spending your valuable time fighting demons, you think that you deserve some sort of compensation.

Koenma sighs. "Oh well, at least you're not unpleasant like our last Spirit Detective. I'm sure I can work something out as far as getting you paid."

He writes something down, probably a reminded to follow through on what he just told you. Then, he turns his attention back to you.

"Now, as far as your missions," he continues. "They will be given to you either by myself or Kaya. Kaya will act as your assistant. She has been given a mortal body, and will attend your school in order to ensure easy contact when a problem arises."

"Wait, there was a Spirit Detective before me?" you ask.

"Three, actually," Koenma answers. "The last one was a real smart-aleck. He was a slacker, had a terrible attitude, and no respect for authority."

He gets a far off, almost nostalgic look on his face. "But, he did save the world a whole lot. Still, I had to fire him for being too reckless. I hope I won't have to do the same with you."

Koenma looks at his wrist, though you don't think there's a watch there. "Anyhow, I have work to get done. Do you have a final question before you go?"

>A. How are you supposed to learn techniques?

"How am I supposed to learn techniques?" you ask.

"That depends," Koenma answers. "Some people create them in the spur of the moment during a life or death situation. Others are taught by wise masters, and learn their techniques. And others spend a great deal of time training to come up with new techniques."

Koenma rises from his chair, floating over his desk and hovering in front of your face.

"There is one technique that I can teach you right now, however," he informs you. "It's called the Spirit Gun. Using it is very simple. You just need to focus your Spirit Energy into the tip of one of your fingers, then release it. This will unleash your Spirit Energy in a concentrated blast. It's a powerful move, but I'm afraid that right now you can only use it once per day."

The room around you begins to fade, and Koenma waves.

"Take care, I'll be seeing you soon!" he says as everything goes black.

You wake up the next morning and get out of bed. The apartment is empty save you, as your father has already gone to work. You get a shower and get dressed, then stumble into the kitchen and fix yourself some breakfast. Grabbing your schoolbag, you head out the door and start walking.

You don't see any sign of Lucy, but Bruce is about a block ahead of you. If you hurry, you can catch up with him.

You run after Bruce, catching up with him pretty quickly. Kaya was right, you can move a lot faster now than you could a few days ago.

"Oh, hey man," Bruce greets when he sees you. "Back to school. Don't be surprised if everyone starts asking you a million questions about what happened. With how many people saw you get shot, I'm guessing everyone in town knows about it."

He chuckles. "But they probably don't know about you coming back from the dead. Now that's really gonna make them freak!"

"It is an impressive trick," someone says fro behind you.

You stop, looking over your shoulder to see Kaya standing behind you, carrying a backpack over one shoulder. She looks younger than you remember, and her previous appearance was pretty youthful to begin with.

She's wearing simple clothes, normal enough for a girl at your school.

"Woah, who's that?" Bruce asks, turning around and looking at Kaya with clear interest.

"She's someone I know from my new job," you tell Bruce casually.

That actually seems to get his attention, and he stops staring at Kaya long enough to look back over at you.

"Wait, you got a job?" he asks in disbelief. "When? I mean, how? You were in the hospital until yesterday afternoon."

"Well, things were in the works before his incident," Kaya lies in a pleasant tone. "We had our last meeting with him last night and gave him the job."

"Well, that's great, he can treat me to lunch from now on," Bruce jokes. "But what kind of job are we talking about here?"

"Oh, he'll be working as an assistant to a detective," she answers. "The agency is out of town, so he might not be around some days."

"A detective?" Bruce asks in disbelief. "What do they want with this knucklehead?"

"I'm the knucklehead?" you ask. "I always do better than you in school. Hell, don't I have to help you with your schoolwork?"

"Whatever you have to tell yourself," Bruce replies with a smirk. "Anyway, good for you, man. Now you'll have less time to do things that'll piss off Lucy."

"Lucy" Kaya asks curiously.

"Our neighbor," Bruce answers. "She's always going on about how stupid and irresponsible we act. Drives us nuts, you know?"

You hear the warning bell ring. Class will be starting very shortly.

"Oh crap, well, we gotta go, later!" Bruce shouts to Kaya before rushing towards the school.

You wave goodbye to Kaya before following.

Classes go fine today. Bruce was right, though, a lot of people have asked you about what happened on Friday, and some freaked out when they heard that you actually died. While some people find that incredible, you can tell that Lucy is still royally pissed at you. The glare she gives you during second period could kill a bull elephant.

Lunch rolls around halfway through the day, and you walk down the hall towards the cafeteria. You know Bruce will be waiting with some of the others, and you're pretty sure your table will have a few new occupants wanting to know more about what happened to you.

You stop halfway to your destination when someone taps you on the shoulder. Turning around, you find Kaya waiting with a serious expression on her face.

"It's time for your first mission," she tells you.

"Is it safe to talk about this here?" you ask.

Kaya shakes her head. "No. We have to leave the school."

The two of you slip out of school without being stopped, walking side by side down the street away from the building.

"After you captured Ishpa, he was brought back to Spirit World and interrogated," Kaya explains. "This morning, we learned that he was summoned into your world by another demon, and instructed to go to the fight between the two schools."

She turns into a nearby alley, and you follow close behind. Once Kaya reaches the end, she turns toward you, leaning against the wall.

"If another demon was commanding Ishpa, it's likely that he has plans of his own beyond getting someone shot at a fight" she says. "Koenma wants you to find the demon who summoned Ispa and stop him before he causes some serious trouble."

You remain quiet, waiting for her to go on. You're sure that's not all she wanted to say.

"Our interrogation of Ishpa didn't get us much information on the demon who summoned him," Kaya informs you regretfully. "But we did learn where he was summoned. Apparently it was in the woods between your two towns. Our people did a small bit of digging, and found out that a few people from Allentown have gone missing in the forest in recent weeks."

Now that you think about it, you think you heard something about that. But you probably weren't paying attention very well. Gossip isn't generally your thing.

"If I had to guess, I'd say the demon we're after is behind those disappearances," Kaya tells you. "He probably summoned Ishpa and had the boy from your school influenced in order to throw the authorities off his trail."

So, this mystery demon forced Tim to take a life-ruining action and got you killed. You're pretty sure you hate him already, and will probably enjoy kicking his ass.

"The forest will probably be the best place to search for clues," Kaya suggests. "But before we go, I have some things you might enjoy. Koenma has provided me with some tools to give to you."

She fishes into her shit and retrieves a small round piece of glass. It looks like a monocle.

"This is the Psychic Spyglass," Kaya explains, handing it to you. "It can see through walls, clothes, pretty much anything. It's very useful for seeing things that are hidden."

You consider taking a peak through Kaya's clothes with the spyglass, but think better of it. If you're going to do that, you should probably do so carefully.

You put the little thing into your pocket as she retrieves the next item, a small watch.

"This is the Demon Compass," she says, handing it to you. "It can track the energy of an already identified demon, and tell you how far away and in what direction it is."

Good, so once you find your mystery demon, it won't be able to hide from you. That should make things simpler. You strap it to your wrist as Kaya retrieves another item, or pair of items.

"These are called Communication Mirrors," she explains, tossing one to you and opening the others.

Taking the cue, you open your own and see Kaya's face within it.

"We can communicate with these mirrors anywhere," she explains. "Even if we're in separate realms."

You close the mirror and stick it into your pocket as Kaya retrieves one final item. It's a ring, with seven spokes pointing out from the broader end.

"This is called the Concentration Ring," she tells you, handing it to you gently. "Shooting your Spirit Gun from the finger you wear it on will give the attack an extra burst of power. However, it will also leave you completely drained after use, so be very careful about when you use it."

You put the ring on your left pointer finger.

"Is there anything else I should know?" you ask her.

"Well, I don't need to tell you to be careful," Kaya replies. "Any demon is dangerous, and odds are that the one who summoned Ishpa is far more powerful than he is. Also, keep in mind that, Spiritually Aware or not, you are still a human. Your body can take more punishment than most, but you're not invincible by any means."

Tucking away her mirror, Kaya pushes off from the wall and walks past you. "Come on, let's start searching."

The two of you cross the old field and enter the woods, which are far less creepy during the day than they are at night. You remember when you were little, and everyone used to tell ghost stories about the woods. Stories of the trees coming to life and taking people away, or of monsters lurking in the shadows, waiting to eat anyone who wanders into the woods at night. You always dismissed them as dumb made up tales, but here you are, searching the woods for a demon that's been abducting people.

It's kind of funny, in a cosmic sort of way.

"Now, where should we start looking?" Kaya asks.

>A. Start on the pathways, the monster is probably kidnapping people who are trying to pass through the woods, so the paths are likely where it would strike.

>B. Search away from the paths, the creature isn't likely to attack in broad daylight. This might make the search take longer and be a bit more difficult.

>C. Suggest splitting up. You'll take the paths, Kaya can search the rest

>D. Suggest splitting up. Kaya can search the paths, you'll check the rest

You decide to start on the pathways. Anybody crossing through the woods would take them, so you figure that's probably where the creature would strike.

You and Kaya move through the woods, looking around for any sign of your mystery demon. You even pull out your spyglass to see though objects along the path, but there's no sign of the creature.

You do, however, see a woman walking down the path towards you. She has long blonde hair, enormous...eyes, and a big, round...face. She looks to be somewhere in her early twenties, and is struggling with a large, heavy bag.

She smiles when she sees you and Kaya, stopping not far from the two of you.

"Hey, I'm not sure what you two are doing out of school, but do you think you could give me a hand, young man?" she asks. "I have to get these books to my sister."

"Must be some heavy books," Kaya comments.

The woman chuckles. "Well, my sister just loves reading. She brings like a million of these things with her every time she visits. I'm not sure how she forgot them."

Because this isn't fishy at all.
>>
>>40651622
You take the Psychic Spyglass out of your pocket and use it to look at the woman. You're definitely doing it out of caution and a sense that something isn't quite right. Yes, that's why.

You see through her shirt, and notice something odd. Her chest seems oddly, harry, and there are some kind of weird tattoos on it, they look like a bunch of spider legs.

You turn the Spyglass on the bag she's carrying, and find that it's not filled with books at all. In fact, it's stuffed to the brim with rocks. You also notice some type of white material on the inside of the bag, like strands of ripped cloth, perhaps.

The woman eyes you curiously. "What are you staring at?"

"Yes, what are you staring at?" Kaya asks in irritation, probably having seen the first place you decided to peek at.

You're fairly certain that you've identified your demon. If nothing else, there's certainly something not right about this woman. So, there's really only one thing to do. You have to kick her ass, even if she is female.

You run forward, throwing a punch that hits the shocked woman in the face and knocks her flat on her back. The bag falls to the ground with a thud a few feet away from her.

"What are you doing?" Kaya asks in shock.

Her eyes then fall upon the bag, and she steps forward, unzipping it and finding it full of rocks, just as you did. Kneeling in front of the bag, Kaya reaches in and retrieves a strand of that material you saw, examining it closely and suddenly backing up quickly from the fallen woman.

Kaya gets behind you. "Be careful, I recognize this kind of demon."

The woman pushes herself to her feet, glaring hatefully at you. Her backside swells, bursting from her pants and revealing itself as an abdomen. Her shirt rips open, and eight legs touch down to the ground, lifting the woman's body into the air. Her hands retract into her body, and she glowers down at you, six more eyes appearing on her face.

The creature towers above you, saliva falling from her mouth and hitting the ground in front of her.

"This creature is called a Jorōgumo," Kaya tells you. "They're a type of Spider-Demon that disguise themselves as females, luring and trapping unsuspecting humans. They wrap their victims up in web and take them to their lair to be devoured."

"And you will make a tasty meal," the demon says, beginning to step towards you.

>>
>>40651994
You quickly grab up one of the rocks from the creature's bag, and hurl it with all of your might at its face.

Your throw turns out to be a good one, and you manage to hit one of the beast's many eyes. It shrieks in pain, taking a step back. You take the opportunity to pick up another rock.

With a hiss, the creature rushes forward. You throw your rock, but the beast knocks it aside with one of its powerful legs before swatting you as well.

You're thrown off your feet, and nearly hit Kaya as you land on your back. Looking up, you see the creature lifting its leg to crush you, and you roll to the side, avoiding death for at least a few more seconds. Kaya looks down at you, then back up at the creature. Holding out her right hand, she summons her oar and zips over you, scooping up a rock and lifting into the air above your foe. Kaya throws the rock, striking another one of the creature's eyes.

While the creature is distracted by Kaya, you decide to hit it hard. You point your right index finger up at the creature, focusing your Spirit Energy into that one point.

A blue glow surrounds your fingertip, and you release the energy that has built up in a single shot, one which strikes the creature in the belly and throws it into the air. It nearly hits Kaya, who swerves to evade it as it crashes to the ground on its back.

The creature kicks its legs feebly, then shoots a strand of web at you. It catches you by the shirt, and the spider begins to slowly drag you towards its body.

"Don't touch the web!" Kaya warns. "Your hands will get stuck!"

She swoops back down, picking up another rock, one of the larger ones, in fact, and climbing into the air, continuing to ascend until it appears that she's vanished altogether.

The spider hisses as it continues to slowly drag you forward with the web attached to your shirt.

This option is secretly a power up, anime characters always get stronger from being shirtless.
>>
>>40652461
You remove your shirt as fast as you can, saving yourself from being pulled all the way to the creature.

A moment later, you look up to see the rock Kaya picked up plummeting at truly incredible speed. It strikes the demon in its belly, and the creature lets out a final gasp before going still, its legs curling towards its body.

Kaya swoops down, landing right in front of you with a smile on her face.

"Not the most sophisticated way of doing things, but I'd say it worked just fine," she tells you.

She suddenly seems to realize that you aren't wearing a shirt, and glances back to see it a few feet behind her. "Oh, I see. Good thinking. Anyway, it's really too bad we couldn't capture this creature instead of killing it, but at least it won't be able to hurt anybody from now on."

Kaya sighs. "Still, Jorōgumo aren't usually very smart. Even the trick she tried using on us in her mortal disguise was pretty advanced for one of them. And one of them being smart enough to perform a summoning, even of an E class demon is unheard of. I don't think this case is over just yet."

Her expression turns happy once again, and she gives you a smile. "But, you've done a great job today! You identified the demon immediately, and together we killed it! I suggest you go home and get some rest. Koenma will let us know when he learns anything!"

>To be continued

That concludes this installment. Next update will probably be Thursday. Follow me @qmdralo for schedule updates and changes, and head over to ask.fm/qmdralo to ask questions when I'm not running.

I'll answer some questions here for a little bit, too.

Could we use or spirit energy to summon spirit beasts or make constructs from it?
Could we be a spirit wizard?
>>
>>40652691
You would have survived. And if you got an increase, it would have been very minor.

>>40652679
Well, I'm not sure. That will probably depend on what happens when you meet your next demon.

>>40652704
I don't think making constructs will be a thing, but I suppose that it is possible for you to learn to summon some minor creatures from the Spirit or Demon world.

>>
>>40652744
The Concentration Ring increases the power of your Spirit Gun, but unlike the normal Spirit Gun, using the attack with that ring leaves you exhausted and pretty much useless in a fight. Regardless of which type you use, the Spirit Gun can be used only once per day.

>>40652748
It would have taken her a moment to realize what you were doing, and then she would have hit you upside the head

Where do you see this story likely going before everything goes off the rails?

Would we have been able to capture the Jorōgumo alive or was she fated to die regardless
>>
>>40652807
All of those remain to be seen.
>>
>>40652816
Capturing it would have been difficult. In all likelihood, she was going to die.
>>
>>40652830
We couldn't have knocked her out by making a tree fall on top of her head with the spirit gun while she was distracted?
>>
>>40652877
That might have killed her.
>>
>>40652957
Now that your thread is dying do you give us anon's permission to through wild parties in your dead threads once you leave while it dies? This is important, gotta keep traditions alive.
>>
>>40653467
Or you could let it die so other threads have room.
>>
>>40653503
But that would be selfless anon, and this is sort of a tradition anyways.

Maybe next time unless someone breaks out the disco ball.

Do demon objects vanish after the demon is dead?

Because otherwise have a ton of supersticky invisible-to-normal-humans rope, and the number of pranks we can pull with that is just incredible
