Stage 82: Immortality, Immorality, Impropriety.

Your name is Ryuu Ryukusa, half-dragon daughter of Ryujin Owatatsumi, and you've had a heaven of a month.

Upon achieving the age of majority in your Clan, you were assigned to protect the daughter of the head of the Hojo Technical Group, an allied clan of Yakuza to yours, until her marriage to the head of yet another Clan not allied with either of your Clans. The Half Demon who works for the Head of the Hojo Group, the leader of Clan Kaja's sorcerers and demon-slayers, and the military of another country have been poking and prodding at your principle, attempting to create a spirit-child that can take and move between two power centers without issues – in other words, trying to artificially manufacture spirit-children into an army.

During this fiasco, you stole an oni-child from the Dragon God of Rain and Snow; defeated two demigods; fought the reincarnation of the kamuy of Insanity and defeated him (your cousin no less); made your principle into your wife and got her and your best friend pregnant; rescued the sorceress mistress of your priestess from a lingering curse and got her badly wounded; formed a renegade clan of your own (over half of which are your lovers) ; gained the services of a nogitsune-child samurai, a demigod huntress-and-midwife, and a berserker diplomat oni-child; combined a clan of nogitsune-born with a clan of human Yakuza; and you made friends with the mermaid population of Japan by siring the new generation of ningyo without killing the mother; and spent far too long in a literal hell of chaos and madness.

Oh, and you've just been granted immortality through your wife's machinations.
>>
>>40660307
You've just spent the last hour explaining your unusual, impromptu and very unpleasant journey through your landlady's strange universe in order to return to where your family waited for you. For them, a few minutes passed. For you, it was over two hundred years. The person who seems to have been orchestrating your life, the head of Ryuu Clan, somehow managed to trap you in the spirit worlds of your landlord, and it took the combined efforts of your landlady, her friends, and some forces of the kami and kamuy who would like to see you take your rightful place in the world: Ame-no-Horobi-no-Mikado, the Kamuy of Destruction who serves Amaterasu-Omikami.

And who is, incidentally, married to five of her incarnations in the human world.

Your life is terrifically complicated.

On the other hand, your family is utterly supportive of you. Kiki-hime is holding your right hand, the ruby talons that gleam in her pale hand shining with the gold of the setting sun. Yui-chan and Akari-chan are holding each other's hands and Yui's eyes are so huge you're surprised that they haven't fallen out. Akari looks calm, but there's an odd tremor in her tail that you've never seen before. Er Yin, the Chinese Void dragonette and your diminutive Fire dragonette priestess, both knew of this through their own mysterious methods (Er Yin being a sorceress and Kiku being Kiki's hundred-and-eighty-six year old sister, a fact which escapes your notice on a regular basis). Despite that Kiku-chan's eyes are steaming as she sits in her master's lap.
>>
>>40660333
Shoko-san, the caretaker of Horobi's heaven under the sea looks positively disturbed by your experiences; her friend and your samurai Yuuhi-chan is barely keeping her exclamations and distress under wraps. Inau-chan, the demigoddess daughter of the Kamuy of the Hunt and a mortal military officer seems less distressed by your experiences. Instead, she seems focused on the fact that you are no longer technically a dragonette of Water, but are now a demigoddess in your own right, even though you have not taken on the mantle of the god of Destruction yet.

Needless to say, it was a very difficult hour, but your tale is done. You feel drained, but at the same time exhilarated, though that may be the lingering side effect of having eaten the flesh of a mermaid and becoming an ageless, nearly unkillable immortal. Likewise, you didn't suffer many flashbacks or any fugue states, and you think that you've got control of your memories despite the trauma of having lived through literal hell for ten of your own previous lifetimes. Kiki-hime squeezes your hand softly and smiles at you, her eyes shimmering but her expression happy and trusting.

[] Give them a few minutes to absorb all that.
[] Excuse yourself and take a dip in the ocean to clear the last bits of sickness away.
[] Remind them that really, nothing has changed – you're still you.
[] Point out that though it was 200+ years, it was also in a barrier, so you're not physically any older.
[] Apologize for not explaining earlier, but you were still coming to terms.

[XXX] You'd thought you'd be a little less confused about the whole thing, but no, no, you're still a little overwrought. Still, hugs might be nice.

You bow your head, already sitting seiza to them. You don't kowtow – that just....feels wring, even for your loved ones. But you can sense various levels of alarm and surprise at the action despite that. “Please forgive me for not explaining before; even though I am still your Ryukusa, I needed to....come back home, and live in my own skin again. To return to my family and be close to all of you once more.” You lift your head, and smile a little. “All I could think of was returning home to my family, and I turned all my will to that effort. And to have you here, all safe, all awake and strong, it was more than a dream come true.” You lower your head. “Thank you for that, Clan Ryuu, my family, my warriors.”

Kiki-hime leans into you and brings your hand to her lips, kissing your fingers softly. To your surprise, it is Shoko who lays her hand on your shoulder, her eyes wet and darkened with her tears. “I am glad that you did return to us, Ryukusa-san.” Yui turns and murmurs something to Akari, who smiles and nods her head once, her tail snaking over to slide along yours reassuringly. Kiku-chan looks up at Er Yin, and then at you, but remains silent for the moment, her 'tears' dry. It is once again Inau-chan who remains quiet and calm, merely observing, her childhood having left her at something of a loss as to how she should deal with the situation.

And then there's Yuuhi-chan.
>>
>>40661135
Yuuhi-chan jumps up, and proclaims rather emphatically, “Ryukusa-sama, we have to show the snake goddess our swords and steel, and break Clan Ryo over our knees, and burn the women and children and pillage the castle and and and....” She pauses and takes several rather quick and deep breaths.

“We, ah, don't do that anymore nowadays, Yuuhi-chan,” you explain gently. “We'll punish the people responsible, in time. I can pr-” Inau-chan shakes her head, only a little but with as much intensity as your elder sister, who has been quietly observing all that has transpired. “I can believe that we'll manage it in time.” Inau-chan relaxes, and Yuuhi-chan claps her hands together, her tail twitching. “We'll do our best, right?” She nods rapidly and drops to her knees, breathing heavily, her glowing eyes bright and excited.

You kiss Kiki-hime's cheek, but your entire family is whom you address as you rise. “I need to go to the water again. I think it will be the last time I really need to, though. Please, don't wait on me here, and I will meet you at the fireworks.” Kiki-hime, smiles and seems perfectly at ease, and the others look amongst themselves. It is somewhat strange to see how your loved ones, the dragonettes and Yui, the core of your family look to one another, seeming to communicate silently with each other while the others seem more bemused or confused.

“Come back soon, aniki,” says Yui-chan. “I don't want to see the fireworks without you.” Your sister, who once before disapproved of the oni-child, smiles softly, her heart seeming to have been gentled by the love and strength your family has no only instilled in Yui, but gained from her.

“As my Yui-niji-chan commands, so I obey,” you comment and she giggles. “Inau-chan can come with me this time,” you comment mildly, as Yuuhi-chan seems to have fallen asleep again. Inau-chan inclines her head and rises, following you as the others start getting up and preparing for the fireworks in the cooling beach evening.

You head towards the tidal pools, which are most likely submerged now, but it is still a place that you think would be good for you. Inau-chan – no, you were calling her Inau-kun, weren't you? – follows with that distance eating gait that lets her keep up with your taller stride easily.

I didn't see us mention the immortality, does anyone else know yet?
>>
>>40661571
>No, though anyone using any form of Elemental Eyes will see it immediately. Kiki-hime knows, and Inau-kun realized it immediately as well.
>>
>>40661607
Hmm, guess divulging that or not is another thing to ponder then.
>>
>>40661650
Seeing how many have elemental eyes, it's a tough secret to keep
>>
>>40661670
For sure, though they may not be as quick to use theirs as Ryukusa is.
>>
>>40661670
The thing is, why should we keep secrets after our triumphant return? If they know, they know.
>>
>>40661701
Hard to see why you'd use stone eyes here, unless you could look through the sand for buried treasures.

>>40661718
There might be a reason to keep it secret from those outside the family, though. Hiding ones strengths if nothing else.

Stone is connected to Fire and Void. I imagine there is quite a bit you could do with that.

[x] We won't be long, I just need to cool down a bit.

“I really don't plan on taking too long, Inau-kun, so please don't be too offended if we have to go back before we're done talking.”

She shakes her head, a faint and rather cute smile crossing her lips. “No, Ryukusa-san, I understand well.” She's traded out her previous swimsuit for a pair of swim shorts and a halter top, which suits her tomboyish looks nicely, to be honest. She's fit in a way that none of your other family members are, her muscles toned and sleek. Er Yin has much better definition, and Yui has that layer of softness to her, while Akari is lithe and you are svelte. So, toned fits her perfectly. “But there are important things.”

“I'd gathered – promises being one of the obvious ones.” You frown, watching where you are walking unnecessarily. “Inau-kun, I have absolutely ~no~ training for this. You could tell immediately....can everyone else as well? Is there anything critical I need to know right away?”

“When you make an oath, Ryukusa-san, you are binding yourself to the kami who overhear it. Since you carry one as a matter of course, that means any promise you make from now on you WILL keep, or be cursed to an unrestful afterlife to do so.” That brings you up short and you stare at her. “You would become a ghost, or worse, a curse, yes. Usually it is a ghost. But you are in greater danger, so a curse is equally possible.”

“Oh. That's....interesting.” You're going to have to be much more careful about accepting your loved ones requests; the last thing you'd need is to be binding yourself to becoming a spirit. Or worse, a youkai. “How hard am I to kill anyways?”
>>
>>40662181
“Ningyo flesh?” You nod. “Given freely or....taken?” She sounds hesitant, worried you might take offense.

“The former, and I'm not that easy to offend.”

“That's good, that it was freely given. That means there's no chance of you becoming a monster. If your head is taken, your heart destroyed, or your body utterly destroyed, you'll be dead forever. Unless one of those things happen, you can survive almost everything. You won't regrow limbs quickly, but it will eventually happen. Your body can't change now, though I don't know if that is true in a Barrier.”

“That's interesting....wait, this means they can't cut my hair?”

Inau-kun looks at you, curious. And still blushed deep red. “Well, yes, it will grow back quickly.”

Inau-kun is thoroughly shocked by the sudden hug and kiss on the cheek you give her. Less so by your sudden release and maniacal laughter. As she wipes blood from her nose, she continues. “Any spirit-child who looks at you for more than a few minutes will know you are demigod now, Ryukusa-san.” That sends a chill down your spine, all the way to your tail fins. “We are different and each of us is unique to ourselves. “It is something about our nature, that we stand closer to the world of the Kamuy, and our mikoto is brighter for it.”
>>
>>40662196
You can't argue it – within minutes you realized Inau-chan was a demigod over and above her claim to be one; Hidesato and Kushinada as well were obviously agents of the kami's power. “Well, it was foolish to hope otherwise. What about my fighting techniques, any of them?” You walk over to the rock wall and set your back against it, the water shifting between a foot or two feet deep as the waves break down where they pass over the now underwater cliff faces.

“To be honest, they shouldn't have changed much at all. It is a change of the spirit, not of the flesh,” she says, though you have to disagree – you felt your Pearl dissolve, which is not freakin' insignificant. “But I haven't ever met or heard of any dragonette or dragon demigods before.” You'll have to ask Kiki-hime if she knew any at Celestial High. “Ryukusa-san....your blood is now very poisonous to humans. Your flesh too. Youkai will find it delicious. That means your Japanese oni too.”

[] I'll make sure I tell Yui-chan and Yuuhi-chan no biting.
[] I can't pass along immortality can I?

[XXX] Okay. Anything else critical for me to know?
[XX] I'll make sure I tell Yui-chan and Yuuhi-chan no biting.
[X] Do you know much about dragonette Pearls? The ones near our hearts, that is.

“Well, I'm pretty sure Yui-niji-chan already finds me delicious....” you murmur half to yourself. Inau-kun whimpers a little, and has her hand over her nose and mouth again. “So, no biting for Yui-chan or Yuuhi-chan without some fair warning. Got it.” The tide is currently high, but the wash of wavelets back and forth across your belly and legs is still soothing, still invigorating. “Anything else critical for me to know about?”

“I can't be certain....but most of us have closer ties to three elements and very weak ties to two. I'm not certain how that applies to you, but it influences our Barrier Combat greatly. We almost never have any ability to influence the elements themselves, but we almost always have a weapon of our own that is very close to us.” She gestures, something which your Clever Minds interprets as an apology of sorts. “My bow, for instance, is almost a part of me inside a Barrier.”

“Like Hidesato's spear or Kushinada and Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi together,” you muse. “I'm good with any weapon though.”

“Well, you might be different too.”
>>
>>40662693
“And no way to hide our nature really?”

“No, Ryukusa-san, I don't think so aside from using inherent magic. I don't have much of that, so I couldn't tell you.” She sounds terribly contrite, as though it's her own fault.

“Don't worry over it, I can work out something – that's what Jinyuu-onee-sama and Er yin-sensei are here for, really.” You lean back and look at the darkening sky thoughtfully. “Do you know anything about dragon-children's Pearls, Inau-kun?

She shakes her head. “They're....like a physical blueprint of the dragonette. They are the embodiment of our soul and body in one whole. They're part of why we live so long and change slowly over time compared to other spirit children.” Inau-kun looks confused and shakes her head, not understanding. “My Pearl dissolved, became one with my body. But if that's so....does that mean I am no longer a dragonette? Does that mean I can't give Er Yin-sensei and Kiku-chan Children of their own?”

There is an awful lot of silence, and you have to help poor Inau-kun's blood pressure stay low enough she doesn't suffer a stroke or aneurysm. “Uuoh....I think....well, if it is mermaid flesh....” She swallows. “I think that you will have a better chance of making them with child than not, Ryukusa-sama!” You glance at her face...and ears, and down to her breasts, which has become very nearly crimson.

[X] Hard to play matchmaker when the fiancé-to-be isn't forthcoming!

“I think Kiku-chan's baby will be a very lovely little thing, though. I'll have to wait for Er Yin-sensei even longer, since she's injured though.” you muse idly.

“Ah....Kiku-sensei will be laying an egg, Ryukuza-sama,” murmurs poor Inau-kun. “She's too powerful to carry a spirit-child to term in her body.”

“I would have thought her size was more important, but....” The words die in on your lips. “What do you mean ~will be~?” Her tenses were odd, and you don't think it was her accent.

Inau-kun looks down at the water lapping at her toned, pale legs. “Perhaps I should not say, because it is not my place, Ryukusa-sama?” she suggests in a small voice. Your huntress and midwife is still embarrassed as all heaven though.

“Could it be this kind of talk embarrasses you then, Inau-kun? That seems very strange for a midwife, honestly.” After she all but confirmed Kiku-chan is in fact pregnant, you can't help but tease her a little more.

“My mother made certain I know all the many ways that a child could be made, Ryukusa-sama,” she murmurs, her blush getting deeper. You have to help control her blood pressure further so she doesn't explode. “Even if the child is of a supernatural nature, it is still a kind of birth.”

….

You know, some temptations are just too much.

[] Stand up and ask her the personal question more....personally.
[] Don't be cruel to the poor girl, just ask nicely.
[] Ask her to sit with you before asking the question; you're both girls, mostly.
[] Ask her in an oblique fashion rather than directly, even if she does act like a boy.
[] Inquire as to whether your talent for dragonettes could be extended to oni-children or nogitsune-born instead.

[XX] Stand up and ask her the personal question more....personally, not cruelly.
[X] Inquire as to whether your talent for dragonettes could be extended to oni-children instead.

You lean forward and roll into the shallow surf, sliding through the water and cooling your own head a little, relieving yourself of the last vestiges of the pernicious and unhappy memories of the time you've spent surviving a hell of some other universe's makings. And with that, a sense of your own playfulness returns. You won't be cruel, just...she's just too cute not to tease a little.

Skimming over the now submerged tide-pools, you pull out the black coral you collected earlier, from ~Nowhere~, just a piece. You work it as you circle back towards the relaxing Inau-chan, and finish it quickly, mostly by touch. Another dip into ~Nowhere~ and it's finished. But when you return to where Inau-kun leans against he wall, her hand over her quickly beating heart, you rise out of the water in front of her like some ancient eidolon, your hair dark and slick behind you, your horns shining in the nearly set sun's last beams, your draconic eyes gazing into hers. They will be draconic forever more, if you understood correctly, and underneath them the invisible to most kanji Amaterasu-Omikami herself painted into your skin will remain forever as well.

You lean against the rock face, and look down, into her eyes. She's just a smidgen taller than Akari-niji-chan, your pretty midwife, and she is looking up at you with wide, bright eyes of pale moonlight. Her heart is thundering in her chest, and she stares up at you as you smile gently at her, your dark hair hiding both of you from the beach.

“Inau-kun....do you think I could turn that ability, that strange thing that makes me a father to dragonettes....towards an oni-child? Or, perhaps, a nogitsune-child?” She has the answer instantly: you can see it in her expression, the half relived, a touch confused, and slightly disappointed expression.
>>
>>40664495
“There....would be a way, yes....if you sacrificed some of your body for it....” Her eyes slip away from yours, her face lowered. Of course, that only makes her cheeks heat as she's faced with a fairly generous amount of cleavage from your two piece. “I could help you with that, with the help of Er Yin-sensei,” she continues.

You gently bring her chin up, and lift her head. Tilting your head to the side, you see what you wanted to make sure of, then you look into her eyes and see a faint hope springing up there. “I also wanted to ask something else, Inau-kun. You said you grew up in a strange way, and had strange thoughts, but you never truly....” The smile slips past before you can stop it, and despite the worry you felt at showing her such a smile, it seems to reassure her, not frighten or worry her more. “You never truly told me....do you prefer girls, or boys?”

She swallows, her cheeks and ears and the soft upper slopes of her breasts hot.

“I ask, Inau-kun,” you say softly as you lean back to stand up straight, and slowly bring the object you've created to her right ear, “because I want all of my family to be happy. Regardless of whom they love. Or why.” You slowly fasten the earring to her ear, gently and carefully threading the post through her pierced ear. “Because, if you find yourself falling in love with someone....it shouldn't be a secret. You can tell me, and I will help you, as I have helped my priestess, my niji-chans, my wife.” Stepping back, you look her in the eyes, your expression softening to something less exotic, less sultry, and more gentle. More loving.

“Because I want you to be happy as well, Inau-chan.”

It's all she can do to stutter a tiny 'hai,' for you.
>>
>>40664521
You can tell she's way too confused and embarrassed to be able to manage a coherent answer, so you gently take her hand and lead her back to the beach, where the crowd is starting to gather for the show. She doesn't stumble, but she definitely is walking slowly compared to earlier. You feel strangely elated, the black coral cuff with the words “Ryu's Angel” curling from Inau-chan's ear marking her as yours as surely as the jade rings you wear mark your family as yours.

You find your family back at camp, however, though the umbrella is closed; the fire has been stoked and there are bamboo skewers as well as chocolates and ginger-cinnamon crackers. Yuuhi-chan is carefully working the eighth marshmallow into her skewer, while Yui-niji-chan is watching Akari-niji-chan actually toast a marshmallow with all the intensity of a cram school student. Jinyuu-onee-sama and Er Yin-sensei are sitting together on a log, speaking softly, while Shoko-san and Kiku-chan are discussing the finer points of making “s'mores” as Kiki-hime giggles softly at the colorful and excitable language they are both using.

[X] See what your castellan and your priestess are so hot about.
[X] Send Inau-chan to Kiki-hime, who knows how to help people through things, and go speak with Er Yin and Jinyuu.

Inau-kun and you walk over to Shoko-san, Kiki-hime, and Kiku-chan. Inau-kun glances at you, their raised - though not yet shouting – voices carrying well. She's still a little dazed, but recovering nicely. “Sorry, Kiki-hime,” you say, embracing your wife, “But I kind of scrambled your midwife's brains.” Inau-kun blushes a little but her smile is gentle and accepting of the mild teasing.

“Really, Ryu-chan, you're so hard on the help,” she teases back, making you give her a narrow-eyed but not unamused glare as Inau-kun covers her smile.

“And these two?” you ask, curious as their insults become darker, more dramatic, and even dreadful.

“They're seeing who can get the other mad enough to toast the marshmallow first.” That makes you and Inau-kun look at each other. “My sister will just heat up the way she does, or Shoko-san will make an angry face.”

“Oh, that makes much more sense then,” you reply, gently kissing your wife's ear. Which naturally gives you the opportunity to barely breathe, “See if you can help Inau-kun find some balance, hmn?” Kiki-hime giggles at the soft, cool breath.

Turning you gesture Inau-kun closer. “Show Kiki-hime your new earring; I have to go bother my sister and my seer.” You run your hand along the beautifully done tattoo of the aconite plant along Inau-kun's shoulder, and Kiki-hime steps up, looking curiously as Inau tilts her head to show her the carved black coral.

“Oh how lovely!” she exclaims (you can tell she isn't merely paying lip service), as she takes Inau-kun's hand, much to the girl's embarrassment, and walks her closer to the foul-mouthed duo. Soon they are talking like old friends, your wife's Wood Eyes open in a passive manner. You step away and walk around the log your sister and Er Yin-sensei are sitting upon, and sit cross legged next to the fire, sliding your arm through your hair and gathering it in your lap.

“Aka-chan, do you feel better now?” Your sister pours a cup of tea – green tea, thank all the kami – and offers you the steaming cup. Er Yin's Void Eyes are wide open, and you know that they're seeing you in an entirely different....uh, dark. Her smile is knowing and gentle, but you can see the tension of pain in her body.

Taking the cup from your sister, you look up at her and nod. “Yes, thank you, Jinyuu-onee-sama. I have so questions for you both....could you tell me the nesting habits of Fire Dragonettes?”

Your sister nearly spits her tea at you in shock as Er Yin laughs softly.

I remembered one of my questions!

Is Jinyuu's switch to Buddhism a permanent thing? Like she can't return to Shinto as she's started on the Eight-Fold Path?
>>
>>40665795
In the case of a spirit-child, faith is more than just something to be chosen. Unlike humans, faith is access to a physical, defining, and potent reality beyond the physical. Jinyuu-onee-sama has access to the literal Buddhist Heavens and Hell, and she can learn and use the scriptiures, sutras, and tools of Buddhism to great effect. The Kami would NOT take kindly to her trying to revert, while those who forsake the Eight Fold Path are always welcome to return to it.
>>
>>40665940
So she's fucked then. I assume Ryukusa and Jinyuu will never share an afterlife?
>>
>>40665940
I see. Is the Eight Fold Path different from other forms of Buddhism or all they considered variations on the same whole? Similar question regarding Abrahamic Faiths.
>>
>>40665985
Ryukusa is an immortal - if she dies, there will be other, much more serious problems aside form sharing a heaven or not.

But no, they cannot share an afterlife, though they could meet in afterlives. And there are other considerations: Jinyuu is a dragonette, and that means she could be requested to serve in a heaven or the Celestial Bureaucracy outside of the normal Buddhist and Shinto channels.
>>
>>40666061
>if she dies, there will be other, much more serious problems aside form sharing a heaven or not.
Tell me more about this.
>>
>>40666005
The deities are separate from the religions. Most of the Abrahamic reigions do follow a single deity and this servants, and though they may be ignorant of it, they are all connected. Likewise, the various forms of Buddhism birth their own own deities and mythos, and they do interact with each other even though the religions do not.

It can become even more complicated when dealing with non-dead religions like the Norse Gods, the Native American ones, and the African spirit world. Oddly, the least divisive between worshippers and spirit world is the Dreamtime.
>>
>>40665985

Jinyuu fucked up because now it's Enma-Oh's job to make her life worse.
>>
>>40666084
Spoilers. That's part of why she's talking to Er Yin and her sister.

Aside form the becoming a curse, a ghost, or a restless spirit, the death of an immortal has detrimental impact on the local spirit world that makes Barrier Cobamt destruction of an areas look like a mild trembler. There's also the fact that if she dies without her mikoto, she can't recincarnate because she's bound to one flesh now. She would literally have to be ressurected.
>>
>>40666180
So how similar is she now to to the Eight Immortals? Do they all share a similar type of immortality and grave consequences for one of their potential deaths?
>>
>>40666206
No similarity at all, actually. Her immortality is more that of an alchemist or someone who ate fruit of immortality; the Enlightened Immortals work off a whole other system of beliefs that would take up most of a book to explain. The long story short, they are associated with but not part of the Celestial Bureaucracy, and they assist mortals in achieving enlightenment by choice, rather than ascending to Nirvana.

Ryukusa isn't enlightened - just immortal. The Eight Immortals hunting her are neither immortal nor anything related to human that anyone can tell so far, but demons from China.
