You are Jakdal Zul, and you are Sith. You just buried your ally, Telza - died by your lightsaber at her own hand. You are walking the Path of Ashes, a bizarre form of spiritual and mental trial to earn the knowledge of the goddess-worshipping Force cult known as the Sensari. You have faced the past, and the present, and that leaves you with the future.

Passing through the gates of trial, the forested terrain begins to give way as you approach the peak of the volcanic mountain that is the end of the Path of Ashes. Lava flows down the slopes in streams, almost serenely, with a warm glow - and the soil begins to be dotted with jutting, black stone.

"So, next is the trial of the future." you say to yourself softly. Then, the figure waiting for you sees you.

"Sith, you don't have a future." Padawan Kaitan says, her lightsaber blazing with an emerald glow. The young, pallid Umbaran's eyes are narrowed, and full of contempt.

We should definitely turn this girl to the Dark Side if we can.

I would imagine that this would be a pretty stunning victory in the eyes of the Sho'ali, although I'm pretty worried about that Jedi Master who's still around.

"Can you feel the strength your hate of me is giving you?" you ask. "I sensed it when we first met - you are walking a dark path. Just like I am."

"You - how dare you! Do you know what happened to Umbara because of your petty Empire?" If you were going to reply, she doesn't let you. "My family was slaughtered - our government killed, or taken over. All over retaking some empty ruins from centuries ago. I am nothing like you - I am Jedi."

You feel, throughout this, her confusion and anger swelling, like a beacon. In the Force, her fury is like a tornado of light and dark - with one enraged Jedi at the eye of the storm. She raises her lightsaber in a salute, then charges with a wordless battle cry.

"Forget the Jedi code, Kaitan. It is what is holding you back." you say, grinning. Your tattoos and dark robes lend themselves to a nightmarish visage - like death. "You already have the power to destroy me. Use it."

Kaitan sheaths her lightsaber. "No... this is not how it ends. I won't become a Sith! They are everything I vowed to destroy. You are everything I vowed to destroy!"

"If you don't give into this, you'll never be free."

"I am freeing the Galaxy from you!" She says, raising her hand towards you. "Now and forever!" At this point, knowingly or not, you can feel the chill of the Dark Side radiating from her, a palpable hunger for revenge. It takes a moment to realize what she is doing - but then the earth rumbles, and the lava erupts from the ground, flying towards you in searing arcs.

You lift your hand, trying to turn aside the tide of molten debris with the Dark Side - but when darkness meets darkness, the conflict is uncertain. One chunk of red-hot earth is deflected, then another - but a spray of liquid stone erupts at your feet, sending you wheeling backwards. Kaitan ignites her saber, and begins walking towards you.

"This power - you have it because of the Dark Side. You have it because of your anger! And the Jedi will never let you use it."

"Enough." She says. "I won't kill you." She pauses, looking to the sky, then back to you. "You'll come with me, to the Jedi temple. I can only hope they decide to execute you, but you'll be given the chance my parents never were. Because in the end... I am Jedi."

The shaking of the ground stills. There is a brief period of silence. Her strides to you are overly even and measured, speaking to caged fury.

You raise your hand to call up a tide of lava, to erase this petulant apprentice from the face of this world - and the mountain replies with a thundering rumble. But you don't feel the swell of your dark powers, like you did all the times you have before. This was not your doing. Rather, both of you turn skyward, both standing with your lightsabers ignited, and awash in the Force. But the same despair crosses both of your minds at that moment, as the sky is clouded with black ash.

"By the Force." Kaitan says, eyes wide. "It's erupting."

"That's our cue." You say to her. "We can kill each other later if you want to, but I'm getting out of here." She turns in astonishment to you, then to the advancing tide of fire and death, then again to you. But you leave her with no time to protest, grabbing her by the wrist and leading her in a frantic chase down the hillside.

There are trees to dodge, vines to trip you, stones to stand on - but nothing to shield you from the wave of unsculpted planet that's descent is inexorable.

"It's hopeless." She says, in a small voice. "We're going to die."

You look, outward to what lies ahead - a stretch of unsullied land, as vulnerable to the heat as a heart is to a blade. Behind you, the flame approaches.

"They said there is no death. They said there was the Force... I don't want to die!"

"The Force is on our side, Kaitan."

"Is it?"

"Yes." You turn towards the inferno - the tempest, the descending hell. You kneel in a meditative position, closing your eyes and opening yourself to your darkness. Kaitan, seeing no other option, joins you. You can feel her, in her fear, trying to search for the calm of the light side - and in her conflict, there is a weakness.

At this point, it's too late to run. You have to trust in the Force to keep you alive. You sense a potential in this inner war of Kaitan's. A Sith could draw upon the strength of that, and therein find power. Or, you could try to offer her some clarity - ensure her safety. But that would be placing your own at risk.

"You're afraid Kaitan. Don't deny this emotion. Accept it - it's a part of you." Kaitan doesn't move. She says nothing to you - or otherwise, has nothing to say. But your words do resonate with her, and you feel her focus in the Force return. Together, you two are not just using the Force - you are the Force. She is the light. You are the dark. And the lava washes over you like a wave over a shell on the shore - covering you, enveloping you in a coffin and cocoon of doom. You feel yourself being ripped at by debris, and your flesh melting from your bones.

Some time later, you open your eyes - you've fallen. You lie face down, on the dirt. You're not where you were - rather, from the chill in the thinned air, you can tell that you're very near the peak. Rousting yourself, you see two pillar - their inscription clear.

"We are made of the past. We are made of the present. We are made of the future. And we make the infinite."

Kaitan stirs around a half hour later. She rises, weary, as tired as you were. You sit some distance from her, meditating on the Dark Side before the pillars.

"You... I fought you." She lets her hand fall to the lightsaber wound on her leg - it's there, as real as anything else. Though on the Path of Ashes, you suppose that doesn't mean much. "I could feel the fire... burning me. Killing me. I was going to die, but you helped me. You're Sith, and you helped me." She shakes her head, confused, letting her hand rest on her lightsaber hilt - it's intricate, carved with shimmering designs on the pale steel.

"So..." you ask. "Are you going to try and kill me?"

"No." she says. "I won't. As Sith go, you seem different. Like a person. That's the last gate, and we can walk through - together."

So I honestly don't understand the Sith.

Their society seems excessively self destructive what's the purpose of that?

I know there's challenging people and having them rise to greater heights but this just seems insane
>>
>>40665669
It's not really a society as such. It's a group of extremely powerful self serving people who seek more power - and who have decided it's in their interests to work together, thus attaining more power
>>
>>40665710
Yeah but aren't they pretty much the de facto leaders of the empire?
>>
>>40665669
Well the idea is not about improving yourself, but instead the Sith Order. You train an Apprentice to become strong, so he ends up better than you are. So when you die, The order is essentially is Sith+1, so when he trains his Apprentice, and that Apprentice wins, the order is at Sith+2.

The order itself is actually somewhat selfless in that regards, but is hypocritical because they force themselves into the chains they claim to be free of.

Or at least that's the idea from Bane's reorganizing the Sith. I'm not entirely clear on the KOTOR era, which just seems to be "Be evil, git gud" with councils of evil and leagues of evil.
>>
>>40665734

Not always. In the time of this quest, the Sith Empire and the Republic are battling for control. Sith are always rising to power but tend to be killed in the process.
>>
>>40665734
Most of them don't actually care about the empire. They just care about doing Sith things. The Empire itself is just a tool to further their interests and it they break it in the course of using it, well who cares, they can always make another.
>>
>>40665734
Do you remember the first scene between Moss Tarkin and Vader in The New Hope?Iirc it tells a lot about Sith as a social construct.
Although,we are in a completely different timeframe here,so it might not be relevant here.
>>
>>40665734
Yeah, they want power so they rule the empire. That's part of the point really.
>>
>>40665669
Are you familiar with the old bioware game Jade Empire? There's a philosophy in that game your character can follow that is very similar to what the Sith are supposed to believe.

It's like, people are supposed to value power above all else, and the more powerful you are the better off you are and the better off everyone else is too. If everyone worked as hard as they could to be as powerful as they could be then everyone would be better off. The people who are the most powerful have the right to rule society and society should be well off because of it, and when someone more powerful comes along he or she has the opportunity to take over and make things better for everyone.
>>
>>40665828
>Jade Empire
I don't think a lot of people here are familiar with console games.
>>
>>40665871
It`s on PC aswell tbh.Granted, the port is not great, but still
>>
>>40665871
That's probably why he explained it anon
>>
>>40665828
Closed Fist was great
>>
>>40665828
In the eyes of the Sith, the weak have no place in society and are going to have to git gud or suffer and die. Most of the time a Sith will just let that happen, but they can also choose to help the weak individual in question get stronger by guiding them, or they can just kill the individual if it directly serves their goals
>>
>>40665895
Closed Fist was one of the best ways I've seen a game treat a villain protagonist.

Shit was great
>>
Thanks for explaining it Anons

It was just that The impression I got from most of the media(fiction, movies, games etc) was that the Sith were unnecessarily decadent and sadisticin the lust for power to the point where they were destroying themselves as a whole in their for that power
>>
>>40666212

Star Wars has never had a super nuanced characterization.

The EU and some video games have had a slightly more complicated and complex portrayal of Sith.
>>
Why the fuck are we helping her?
>>
>>40666359
Maybe our Sith hates weakness in others just as much as he hates weakness in himself
>>
>>40666374
Which is not Sith in the slightest and doesn't fit in with anything Jakdal has done so far.
>>
>>40666359
I bet some people already want her as a waifu
>>
>>40666415
Which is why I'm pissed, its retarded to help her as we get nothing from it. Helping her reeks of waifufags.
>>
>>40666429
You know plenty of Sith corrupt Jedi, so it isn't that weird at all
>>40666412
That's not anti-Sith for sure, and isn't it? He talked to Telza about not wasting her potential and tried to help and console that other guy in the Academy
>>
>>40666429
I was going more along the lines of
The Sith Marauder Conversion of Jaesa Willsaam from SWTOR
Basically, create confusion and insecurity, never directly lie, and constantly try to expose they hypocrisy and flasehoods of the Jedi
>>
>>40666429
It does.We have to be careful here.
Don`t be pissed though, we can still make good out of it
>>
>>40666485
It's good as it is right now. There's been no waifuing, you guys are on a hair trigger. Stop worrying about what's waifuing and what's not, just do what's IC.
>>
>>40666429

Let's not forget the overarching goal here is to convince the Sensari to give up their secrets.

We'd make a much stronger case to them if we convert the other delegate to our cause.
>>
>>40666469
You do realize we just were made an apprentice right? Leave corruption for later. Also the guy he helped was his friend and is the son of a Lord and Telza was an attempt at bringing her under our heel.
>>
>>40666544
Theyll give us they're secrets if we're the one that leaves, if she leaves with us they're just as likely to suspect that were mind controlling her.
>>
>>40666556
Yeah, and how did he make him his friend?
It's never to early to make a start, get some practise in so when we really want to corrupt someone we have experience
>>
>>40666544

this is a pretty good point. If we just murdered everyone on the way to the end of the path, I doubt the Sensari would be very impressed. They're closer to the Jedi in temperament so murdering everyone is probably not going to make them trust us.
>>
>>40666586

Uh, but we're not mindcontrolling her at all. This is real persuasion, not Force mind tricks.
>>
>>40666212
Glad to help
>>40666359
I thought we were tempting her to join us. That's the impression I've been getting
>>
>>40666653
I was under the impression that we needed her to pass the trials, two of us were suppose to return, light and dark. We couldn't of killed her
>>
>>40666862
For me In Character I think it'd be a waste of good potential and >>40666544 this

OOC its an interesting to plot to see through.
>>
>>40666897
OOC I think she'd make a cool recurring enemy. I doubt we are going to recruit her to our side, at least not yet
>>
>>40667057

I'd be cool either way, whether she becomes a recurring enemy or if we manage to convert her on this mission.

I am somewhat nervous that all of our allies are dead though. I don't like our odds of a 1v1 duel against a Jedi Master.

"Together." you say. "That's how we passed this trial. That's how we'll finish it." She nods. You pause for a moment, then mention. "You know, you're different too. For a Jedi. You aren't weak, passionless like the rest of them. You were willing to work with me."

"Don't push it." She says, but she's smiling slightly. "I'm just glad we all got out of this alive."

The Chief Elder is waiting for you, past the final gate.

"The sign has been made." He said. The ash in the air is like a snowfall, the closest many Sensari would ever see to one. "The skies have darkened - and two have been found worthy. You shall receive our knowledge - and you will learn to judge if one is ready to receive it."

The Sensari teaches you how to use several herbs - some indigenous to Sho'al, others occurring throughout the Galaxy, to induce a deep meditative state. In it, one could achieve a prodigious state of focus for healing or prophecy... or alchemy.

"The incantations have been taught to you - the mixtures shown. You are now not just Sith, or Jedi. You are Sensari - whether you wish it or not, Daemi shall watch you, judge your actions."

"Fascinating... I had no idea that the Force could be used in such a way."

The Elder makes a grateful gesture. "Outsiders seldom appreciate the traditions of the Sensari. They deride us as primitives - savages. But all ritual is done in accordance with what Daemi - who you call 'The Force' has revealed to us."

"Thank you, great Elder." Kaitan says, offering a small bow. "The Jedi swear to use this knowledge to aid those in need."

"Use it - honor your orders, Sith - Jedi. But walk with caution in your return. The other elders believed that only one could receive the knowledge, the prophecy spoke of such also. I believe we were mistaken. But others may try to stand in your path."

Kaitan turns to you. "If only every Sith was like you."

"I'll excuse myself now," you say. "I must contact my Master." Your personal long-range holocom, provided for the sake of the mission, flickers to life. Darth Greia's masked, armored form looks up at you.

"Apprentice. Good timing, I'm pretty much wrapped up at my end. You?"

Used to be, I changed it. Now it's 2 and 1 for critfail, 99 & 100 for critsuccess.

It is not because we are different and that we disagree that we much kill each others, others believe otherwise so please Kaitan at least surrender so that i can guarantee your safety."

Hmm.

We might be able to guilt trip her into coming with us.

We tell her that this is the death of us, that she might as well kill us before she runs away.

Being that Jedi she is, she will obviously refuse to do so. Saying she could not do so.

Then we mock her code. How is not killing us different from striking us down where we stand. Our master would kill us regardless. Her choice and inaction regardless would lead to our death. Thus is the fallacy of the Jedi code.
>>
>>40670241
>>40670321
yep going for this
>>
>>40670321

Frankly, I think we should say anything and everything to get her into the ship.

We can drop the act once Greia has her under control and her lightsaber is taken.

"Ignite your saber." you say, fixing her with a steely gaze. She steps back, and enters a combat stance.

"After all that, you'll try to kill me?"

"No - I want you to kill me." She seems stunned, silent. "If Darth Greia finds out that I lost the information, willingly no less, he'll kill me. Painfully. You need to do this - you need to understand what you're doing to me."

Kaitan looks at you pained. She ignites her lightsaber.

"I will not stand by -" her guard begins to say. She waves her hand.

"Return to the village without us." Your guides nod, and leave. She looks back at you. "I always was good at that, at least. I don't want to kill you - you can live if you come with me. You aren't like them, you aren't a monster. Master Holum - he can train you, make you a Jedi."

I do not want to kill you, but I could never face my master again if I simply let you go.

well it's always a pleasure when the kid come into the van on it own , even more when it beg for the "candy" in this situation, avoiding violence is always good even for siths

is it really an act? We're not exactly following the full on backstabbery of normal sith. Not saying we're jedi but we're not exactly the typical sith.

I'm assuming that if she comes full on to attempt to kill us, we strike to disable?

Clank.

"If I die," you say. "It will be as a Sith. Not as a traitor."

Clank.

"You don't - Idiot! Why are you throwing yourself away for something worthless?"

Clank.

"You should know - the Jedi aren't worth dying for! Do this for -"

Clank

"Wait, what's that?" Kaitan asks, her head perking up. "It sounds like..."

Clank.

"...footsteps."

A familiar grating, metallic voice fills the air. "Apprentice. What do we have here? Young love? Or are you always this naive?"

"I have this under control, Master. She will come with us. But why -"

"Am I here? Apprentice, I can feel your doubt and desperation long before you do." the creature says. "Under Sho'al's new laws as an Imperial planet, practicing Jedi are to be put to death. I was merely bringing in some of the minister's elite troops to enforce it."

Kaitan looks fearfully at the Sith standing before her. Then, her knees buckle, she drops her weapon. "Master!" she gasps.

"You felt it too. How interesting. It's easy to talk brave - but what do you say now that death is staring you in the face." Its lights flicker green behind its mask. It turns to face you. "Actually, you have it under control, don't you? Tell me - is she coming with us?"

"She is - and we won't even need to hurt her." You flick your wrist, and her lightsaber flies to your hand. "Because she won't make us need to. Right?"

She looks at you. Her eyes are brimming with a hopeless dread. "I... I will. My lords."

"You learn quick. Maybe I can have another apprentice after all." Greia says cheerfully. He is awash in the Dark Side. "Let's get back to the ship. We have a future to discuss."

Thank you for playing SAQ! Tune in next time for Sith politics.
