Light. There is some sort of light in the distance. Between the warm walls that you have called a home, occasionally moving around. You’ve gotten too big for your home and you feel the urge to break out. Something is calling you into the world.

You push out a claw, now hard and sharp, against the walls and they crack. You thrash about, suddenly desperate to escape. After hours of work, you have broken free of your bonds and you look onto the bright world for the first time. You hear a sound, what you instinctively know as your mother, and the first word you hear is the one that will become your name.

“Syril”

You have just been born into the world! You are a dragon, a terrible beast of legend that can rain fortune or destruction on the world. Well, eventually. For now you are just an infant and you need to do a bit of growing.

What kind of Dragon are you?
>Behemoth. A thick-set dragon, you can’t fly but your strength and defense are greater than other dragons.
>Drake. A traditional dragon. Bonus to Speed and HP.
>Serpent. You are a long, wingless dragon. Depending on your type, you might fly through the air or slide beneath the waves. Bonus to Intelligence and Magic.

You were born a beautiful Serpent Dragon. Like many of the serpents, this grants you more intelligence and grace than some of your brutish cousins. You immediately get the hang of crawling and look around the cave a bit. It is a warm cave, matted with fur, bones, and the occasional caravan. Just the thing for a newborn dragon with no scales.

You see two other eggs there, both with small cracks and the chirps of dragon struggling to escape. You were the first one out, you little over-achiever. You look up and see two other dragons, one with brilliant rainbow scales and the other with dark scales and sharp spines. Your Father was an Air Serpent, and your Mother was a Sea Serpent.

Your first few weeks are crucial for development, and will help set a foundation for your growth. While this does give you a direction, there is no end for the transformation that dragons can go through to expand their powers. Legends even tell of a dragon who mastered all the spheres of influence and was responsible for giving birth to the second moon that you can see in an opening in your cave.

You spent your time playing with the rocks and the dirt around the cave. Eventually, when you reached a point where your scales grew in, they were a deep brown that looked like fertile soil. Your parents were extremely proud, not as much as your Sister Aella who grew Yellow Scales or your brother Malta who had blue, but you were content in your strength.

-

It’s been a year, mostly of playing with your siblings in the cave and exploring the trinkets that your parents bring back from their raids. They’ve told you about the different races like humans and giants, and how their civilizations work different from what you know. You know they fear dragons and it takes a lot of work to earn their respect, and any act of violence can easily undo that work.

-

You are still small, but your parents believe you are old enough to start exploring the wilds outside the cave. The cave is in a pristine valley, mountains on all sides and a huge forest with a winding river cutting through it.

Your siblings go their separate ways, and your parents rest outside the cave, ever attentive for the slightest sign their children are in danger.

You decide to follow Malta to the river. While you aren’t the strongest swimmer, he takes to the water in an instant. Unable to really follow him, you start pushing around the rocks and making piles of shiny and not-shiny stones along the beach. You have a very keen eye for finding the prettiest stones, even among hundreds. You'll have an excellent taste for treasure later in life.

While you are playing, you hear a rustling coming from the bushes further downstream. You see a strange looking man in bright blue and yellow robes peaking at your brother. He has a book open in front of him and seems to be writing something down and quickly mumbling to himself. Your parents said to be careful around people, but you are very curious about this new stranger.

You approach the man, as quietly as you can, but you aren’t as smooth as your parents and eventually fall over your own short legs. The man gasps a little, but stays quiet and just stares at you for a minute. You try to mimic the noises he was making, yipping happily and just spouting a few phrases. You didn’t pay as much attention as you should have when your parents tried to teach you non-Draconic languages, but you were still giving it a go.

After a few tense moments, the man flips the page and looks back and forth between you and the page. Then he holds out a hand and he starts speaking again. It’s a little different than before, but you still have no idea what he’s doing.

You stay around and try to play with the mysterious figure. You try to offer him one of your shiny stones, or tug at his rob, but he keeps chanting. You’re a bit put off, but it’d be terrible to be rude, even if he doesn’t understand how amazing your taste in rocks are.

A little glow starts to surround his hands, and your magical senses began to tingle. You tried to call out for your brother, or your parents, or anything else. But before you can let out any sound, there is a blast of energy and you are knocked unconscious.

-

You wake up in a very cold, unfamiliar place. The taste of metal fills your mouth and, when you can start to move again, you open your eyes and see tall metal bars. There is a thick cloth surrounding the outside, so you can’t see where you’re going, but you feel movement and the sounds of something big taking steps.

You know what this quest kind of reminds me of? An old flash game, "How To Raise A Dragon". You desperately try to tear off the cloth, and you manage to get a large hole in the side with your claws. You see huge structures, large blocks with holes and all sorts of colors in the distance beyond the wide field. You see cows and goats, and other humans in simple clothes tending to them. When you focus very intently you can hear large groups of something, you assume people, moving and talking all at once.

“Quiet back there!” You are able to understand some of the simpler words that the man from before is saying. Out of the corner of the tear you made you see him sitting at the front of a large wooden contraption. There are two powerful looking horses trudging away at the front. You try to push at the bars, but your strength is still very pitiful and you don’t even make a dent.

After hours of travel, you arrive at the place with all the humans. There is a sign, and you are able to sound out the letters to read it. Marketplace.

The man takes his trunk further in and you see all sorts of people walking about. Brilliant colors of skin and cloth, people that are as tall as saplings to others shorter than you. You are overwhelmed for a while at how diverse this place is, until you reach a very open spot and the cart stops. The man gets off his chair and starts yelling something at the crowd.

“Ladies…..the long…magical…FEARSOME DRAGON!” He drones on for a while, before he pulls off the clothe and you and the crowd stare at each other. There are plenty of people whispering and staring at you, and you don’t know what to do.

When the cloth is off, you immediately fall down. You don’t think that it will actually trick anyone into thinking you are dead, but you can act pathetic. You seem sickly, trying to make yourself seem weak. People murmur in a tone you think is disapproving. The man tries to yell at you, and even tries to hit your cage a few times, but you keep up the act.

“I’ll take him.” Someone calls out. You open your eye a crack and see a human in very elaborate garb. Your earth-dragon senses are tingling and you can immediately identify the gold and silver that laden his body. He crawls up on stage and smiles at you, still speaking to the man about some sort of payment. The crowd looses interest and the man, now holding a large burlap sack, pushes your cage off of the cart and rides away.

“Hello, little one.” The man says, bending over and meeting you on your eye level. “I’m sorry about …. Your…dragon is… to be the most intelligent of them all. My name is Alexander, what is yours?”

“Syril.” You say quietly, pressing your belly against the floor and trying to get into your best defensive position. It’s not very much, but you can’t seem weak at a time like this.

“Syril. That is a…name. I know this must be scary for you, but I need your help.” He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small package wrapped in fur. He unwraps it and you see strips of meat inside. He offers them to you, and as far as your sense can tell they don’t have anything unusual in them. You eat a few, and once you start chewing you realize just how hungry you were. You have no idea how long you were out, or how far away from home you are, but it feels like you haven’t eaten in days.

“If you…my men can take you out into the forests and let you free, but if you…to my castle and help me.” He is trying to use simple words for your sake, so you understand the gist of his request.

You nod at him and he smiles, putting the rest of the meat down in the cage and calling for some guards. Four large people in armor come over and put your cage on large plank of wood. The ride is a little rough, but you reach a large stone building with more gold on the doors. Your dragon instincts are kicking in hard, and a part of you feels the pull of precious gems and other valuable items somewhere in the castle.

After a few rooms filled with tapestries and other boring decorations, you are brought to a strange room filled with many different glass vials and old smelling books. Alexander has the cage opened and you crawl out for the first time in who knows how long.

“One second…there.” You see him tip some liquid over a small gem and he presses the gem onto one of your scales. It sticks, even when you shake your arm, and for a second you get upset before you feel the slight buzz of magic. “Don’t worry, it’s just a simple spell that translates things. I enchanted the gem so everything seems like it is Draconic to you. That’ll wear off in a while, but maybe by then you will be on your way home. Maybe.”

Alexander goes over to the shelf and pulls off one of his books. He flips through the pages and stops, bending over to show you the illustration. You see a dragon bending over a sleeping man and shedding some of his scales into a smoking pot.

“All I need from you is a few scales, it’s especially potent given you are a Serpent, to help with a little spell I am putting together. It would help me out a lot.” He closes the book and smiles at you. The scales will take a while to grow back, but they will eventually return.

“Ok.” you say rather succinctly, and he looks shocked at how abrupt your answer is.

“Oh, thank you Syril! I promise you won’t regret it.” He goes over and starts mixing together some potion, as you play it cool. You don’t want to give away anything just yet.

“Well, as much as I appreciate the freedom that was taken from me, I would ask of something else. Something to make sure Mama and Papa don’t try to seek revenge.” He looks at you with a grin in his eyes as he throws some potions together in his pot.

“There is something I would ask of you, Little Syril. You are a yearling now, and you are about to enter the most interesting part of your growth cycle. If you would wish it, I would like you to come live in the castle. The stories of old tell of dragons living with the Monarchs and working together to unlock their potential. You wouldn’t have to search for a cave, and as our kingdom expands there would be plenty of gold and treasures to start a horde of your own.”

He brings over a small metal object and pulls off a few loose scales. “Of course, you will still be granted some gold and treasure from my personal collection for your trouble. But think of how much more we could do together if you decided to stay in the castle.” It is a tempting offer, to become a city-dwelling dragon. Your parents spoke of them as cowards or sell-outs, but you see that maybe it would be a much easier, certainly a much more interesting life than just carving out a hole in a mountain side.

“”I’ll need some time. Mama and Papa will be worried about me.” Alexander sighs a little, but in the end nods and agrees that you should return to your parents. He takes the loosened scales and drops them into the smoking pot, which turns from green to a clear liquid.

“Little Syril, do you know what this is?” You shake your head. “This is a very powerful poison. In an hour, it will distill until it is only a single drop, but it is enough to kill a man no matter what spells or antidotes are used.” Alexander smiles as he whispers to you, stirring the pot. “The throne was stolen from me by my brother, through use of dark magic to influence our late father. But now I will take it back. And the best part, is that the poison will only effect him!” Alexander pulls out a lock of hair and throws it into the pot, where it dissolves instantly.

“You will be rewarded for returning the throne to me. And should you return, we will be unstoppable!”

Alexander just smiles as you settle into the corner, waiting for your reward. Petty human politics, just like Mama and Papa warned you.
