Your name is Thomas Cairn, and you have no clue what you jumped into. Your dad was an infamous superhero known as The Red Rider, and he showed up dead in an alley about three months ago. When you were checking out a storage unit you inherited from him, everything changed. You gained his powers, a brain able to calculate faster than light, and an uncanny affinity for machinery.

Using your powers, you were easily able to get into the world's top engineering college, Central Cosmopolis Institute. But just as you were ready to leave everything behind in your hometown, Comet City, and move on, one of your dad's "co-workers", John Salvos, stopped by. He had an envelope from your dad, inside was the key to a safehouse in Cosmopolis, and a letter from The Red Rider.

The letter told you many things, including the existence of the murderer, Menace, a supervillain with unknown abilities. It also led you to your dad's lab/safehouse, where you passed copies of his notes on Menace to Mr. Salvos, AKA Swordsman. That was a few months ago, you started selling the fruits of your labor and doing vigilante work with your friend Wrench. But even Heroes need rest, so you decided to take your girlfriend Jeana with you on Christmas vacation to your Grandpa's house. But you didn't expect to find that your grandpa was actually the (very old) Supervillain Dr. Genesis and that there will be "friends and rivals" joining you over the break.

You walk downstairs with Grandpa, still sort of shocked about what he just told you. But wait, why isn't Mom a Super? He told you that powers were recessive so, oh, either Grandma lacked the gene entirely, or she was a carrier but not a Super. If you extend the whole "Awakening" thing, then that means that the gene therapy Grandpa did on Mr. Salvos to fix his genetic disorder, it activated his powers, not caused them. Then... tangents again, gotta keep that in check.

"Speak of the devil, we were just talking about how long you had been up there." Mom is sitting at an elegant couch with a coffee table in front of her that seems like it could buy a small country, while Jeana seems like she's walking in a china shop with fabrige eggs on the floor while a baby is sleeping. That isn't even the weirdest thought you've had today.

"Had some catching up to do and we didn't want to annoy you by interrupting." Grandpa smiles way too often, maybe he still does that crazy laugh, that was always the most hilariously out of tune part of his crimes. You heard old news reports where the reporter on the radio would be describing a robbery and then a stupid laugh would come from the background, all in all it was funny in retrospect.

"Honey, when you said Jeana was a home-maker, I thought you meant like in the other sense. But then I realized that you go to CCI and got it figured out."

"Though it was funny when you asked me what kind of detergent works well on linens." Jeana seems to be getting along with Mom, but you hoped they would so why is this a surprise. Maybe you expect the worst way too ofte- no, the last time you got optimistic yo- avoiding that topic too.

The rest of the day goes by like a whirlwind of faces and neighbours saying "It's nice to meet you" and which of them are Supers. Every so often, Grandpa would pull you aside and point out a Super, leaving out the name of course, and by the end of the day you feel like you could tell certain Supers by sight. They seem to walk differently, almost like peacocks swaggering to get attention.

"Hey kiddo, how would you feel about playing some poker tonight? I get the feeling you'd be good at it."

"Sure, I'm assuming it's just friendly."

"Yeah, no stakes, just an excuse to meet up with old friends. Only prize at the end of the night is having fun." That's good, you don't think you could even afford to buy in here.

You spend an hour helping Grandpa get his rec room set up to play poker, there are so many things to just look at, he has so many board games that look like they're from the stone age or something. You even pulled out an original copy of Monopoly! Then the doorbell rings and he goes to get it while you finish getting refreshments. Grandpa said that beer might not be a good idea for you, but nobody would stop you if you grabbed one.

A hulking brute of a man, at least 8 feet tall walks in right next to a lanky guy who looks like he could be used as a javelin. They take a seat at the table and Grandpa introduces you.

"First things first, we're all retired, we also have the agreement that whatever is said in this room stays in it. So, this is Francis Kelson and Hans Jormann. They are better known as the original Pied Piper and The Hurler. Guys, this is my grandson, Thomas Cairns, and he creates wonderful technology."

You put down all of the refreshments and shake their hands just as one other person walks in, a small, withered old man who looks like a stiff breeze could knock him over.

"Wonderful, this is Wo Xianding, AKA Sage, and Wo, this is my grandson Thomas."

You shake his hand too, and it is remarkably firm for someone who looks like that guy from that Disney movie. How do you forget stuff like that?

You certainly know when to hold them, and know when to fold them, know when to walk away- stop singing in your head. You start up the game and you are absolutely smoking the competition, Sage always uses his right hand to put forward chips when he's bluffing, Hurler doesn't have a poker face, The Piper whistles way too much, and Grandpa snickers under his breath.

"Wow, I'm glad that we don't play for keeps, are you a professional that Mike brought in to make us look bad?" Sage's voice is surprisingly clear for someone that you're sure is at least 200.

"No, I just guess I'm good at poker." Everyone is laughing at your apparent modesty, and you join them, this really is fun. Piper tells great jokes, he told stories about the new Pied Piper when he was a kid, and how he would catch rats and train them to do stupid tricks. Hurler does surprisingly good impressions regardless of his deep voice, you never thought a Supervillain could sound like Danny Devito.

Everyone is having a good time, laughing it up while playing poker. You're just cleaning house more. Grandpa tells the story about the time Captain Justice flew crotch-first into a telephone pole during a fight and how he lost because he was laughing too hard. Sage has a lot of good stories from China, unsurprisingly he really was around for the revolution, and how he told Mao Zedong to shove it and moved to America. Finally it gets to you.

Better if it sounds on accident.

So I send them underneath him, and have them push up with about 200 pounds of force. Unfortunately, they pushed up BETWEEN has feet, as well as under his feet."

"You know that high-pitched, god-awful scratchy sound an actual boombox makes when you smash it? He made that sound. Kinda impressive, actually."

"So, a few months ago, I was going to a concert with my friends, and we manage to get backstage because one of them knows a guy. So we're back there laughing it up, having a great time, when all of a sudden Boombox shows up and demands the audience's wallets. Shortly after that, Swordsman shows up and they start fighting. All my friends ran away, but nobody gets between me and my music, so I take out these-"

You pull out the bag and start moving them for effect.

"- and start spreading them around the stage so that nobody could see them. So Boombox knocks the sword out of Swordsman's hand because, come on seriously, and starts charging up a real loud boom. He gets into a wide stance, starts yelling, getting all worked up. So I decide to seize the opportunity and I move all the machines into a pile beneath him. He barely manages to say "What?" before I bring them up at maximum speed right into his balls."

Everyone is laughing their asses off at this point.

"I only realized after the fact that I didn't field-test them before this, it turns out I hit him with 50 pounds of force. You know that high-pitched, god-awful scratchy sound an actual boombox makes when you smash it? He made that sound. Kinda impressive, actually."

They're all laughing up a storm, Sage even falls off his chair like one of those old sitcoms. The Pied Piper pipes up between laughs, god dammit pun mind.

"Yeah, fuck that rube, used to be you had to have a spandex suit or some cool armor or something to be a Super, and that idiot dresses up like a normal idiot."

"No respect." Hurler does a great Rodney Dangerfield impression and the laughter starts up again.

"I've gotten these things down to a science now. Watch this." You will the nanomachines towards the minifridge and use them to open up the door, they wrap around a bottle of water and bring it back to you. What's the point of having these things if you can't show off?

"That's like the time I controlled the entire ant farm convention, good times." Pied Piper seems lost in nostalgia.

"Well, I can't argue with how interesting that is, but I can do this." Sage flicks the cap of your water bottle and it flies off into the wall.

"Hey, we get it, you're all special and unique in your own special way, can we NOT break my house. Hans I still remember last time.

You go in to say goodnight to Mom but she's already asleep. She snores really loud normally but outside the door you barely hear it.

There's an idea, soundproofing the suit! Wait that wasn't your idea, oh, that's the idea. You go back to your room and Jeana's already waiting for you...

Jim why does this keep happening?

I don't know Rob, seems like it happens a lot with this comic to me.

You know what this means Jim...

Yeah I do.

It's time?

Oh yeah.

You wake up in the guest room feeling quite well rested for not actually sleeping much last night. Jeana's still out cold, she normally wakes up late anyway so this isn't a surprise. You get washed up and get ready for the day, there are decorations everywhere now, maybe Grandpa has a decorating machine. No, that's ridiculous, it's probably more than one.

Biology feeds into forensics which can let us, alongside database use, identify people from DNA samples.

The rest of Christmas break goes by like a breeze, Grandpa taught you quite a bit about that whole gene therapy thing, but explained that it didn't make Mr. Salvos a Super directly, just activated it. There are different guests every day, and they all seem to either know Grandpa or Mom. Some of Mom's book club, Grandpa's buddies from the "American Legion" (likely story), there is never really a dull moment. Jeana seems to have a lot of fun, especially during Christmas Eve dinner, she seems... content. Christmas day rolled around and your friends in Cosmopolis called you and thanked you for the presents that RON sent out. Wrench liked the Mekboy you designed for him, Harry liked that poster for that hair band you never liked.

Christmas came and went, and you went back to CCI with a spring in your step and some advice from Grandpa. You had to sign up for classes again, so you got a few choices in schedule. You decided to do Entrepreneurship and Chemistry in addition to all the required classes. Professor Brend taught Chemistry and Ms. Calen taught Entrepreneurship, you excelled in both. Of course free time was when you did more interesting things, you helped Wrench finish up with the Mafia, earning yourself a name feared by evildoers, The Red Knight. People theorize that you are The Red Rider's new persona, and after a year he returned. On a more mundane note, you decided to learn more on how to work metal, it really is rather soothing. You made a few tools just to see if you could, and they turned out well. You started messing around with ideas utilizing the Cairnsium energy, and came up with Lightning Bugs, a small, robotic, mass of tasers. RON also got all of the previous patents through, so he put them in also.

Okay guys, I'm going to cut the action a bit short because if we do superhero stuff (like I WANT to) we won't have time to do tech and stuff. So...

>Issue 9 is over! But don't touch that dial yet folks! Points!

>Origins arc completed, you got a Plot Point! They will be harder to get from now on.
>Two Tech Points are yours, for thread
>Lists are fucking everywhere

Tech next post.
>>
>You have two Tech Points, they regenerate slowly over time, you get two per thread

Un-Researched:

>Nano-Limb: Makes a limb of attached Micro-Actuators, requires some way to interface with the nervous system

>CLOAK bots: A build of Micro-Actuators able to shift color, near invisible when employed, weaker than normal.

>Piercing Beam: Uses Plasma to cut through materials in a thin beam, useful against armored Supers.

>Increased Capacity: Increases the slots in one part of your armor by one.

>Hyper-Hydraulics: Use compounded Micro-Actuators to increase armor lifting capabilities to 2 tons.

>Beam gauntlets: A module that takes up no slots on the arm, yet allows use of all known beam weapons.

>Bio-Meld: A fluid that, when applied during the process, allows for safe integration of Micro-Actuators.

>NerveJack: A thin cable that functions as a nerve and can be used as such.

>You have one Plot Point, these are given out when Thomas completes a goal. They can be spent for perks.

[X]>Stark's Blessing: Gain a permanent plus 10 to charisma, Alcohol now increases Innovation (but not Instability), but when it wears off, Instability and Innovation switch.

>Pym Power: Break-Downs are more catastrophic, but gain a plus 10 to Innovation (but not Instability).

>I've studied all your moves!: Grants a plus 10 to all rolls opposing any opponent that you have seen fight before. (regardless of mind-altering effects)

[X]>One with Nothing: Allows meditation to shave off 10 instability/hour with no roll.

[X]>One with Everything: You can stop a breakdown if you pass a Guts Check

>Dreamer: allows the use of the action "Innovate!" once per day (in addition to other rolls called for by QM).

>Paperclips and Superglue: Gives the new action "Slap it together", which allows the creation of one-use inventions within the timespan of 1d100 seconds.

>AHAHAHAHA: Instability has a permanent plus 5, but Innovation gets a plus 10.

>Oh I get it now!: Convert one Plot Point to 3 Tech Points.

>Self-improvement: Choose a stat to give a plus 5 to.

[X]>SCIENCE, BITCH!: Permanently gain 10 Instability (but not Innovation) to increase Tech Points gained per thread by one.

>I ain't gotta explain shit: Permanently gain 10 Instability (but not Innovation) to increase Tech Points gained per thread by one.

[X]>Casanova: Improves Stark's Blessing by 10 Charisma and a decreased stress backlash from drinking

>I don't make inventions, I make history: All business-related tasks go significantly faster.

[X]>I'm a professional: Stress no longer effects you in battle (Mind-altering effects exempt)

>Thread 9 over!

>That was the end of the Origins arc, so I want to know what changes you think would be cool. Sorry the thread got bogged down in lists for a while.

Next thread isn't planned yet, but expect it to be next week, Twitter is @xLostCowboyx

As I said, What would you like to see change in the next arc, Local?

Hey, I'm that guy who was going to start another superhero quest last week, but decided to hold off to do some extra planning.

Probably going to start tonight or tomorrow depending on last minute work schedule stuff.

Any advice?

I think we should build a bike. Partially for dad, and I know we have a jetpack but we might switch it out for something else. Plus, we could just build the bike to be faster.

Maybe I just wanna make a "Knight and his trusty steed" joke.

Yeah, don't be like me, be like Shadowboss, give the players a choice of character instead of creating one. My first thread, shit as it was, got bogged down in it and the results luckily didn't suck. Only other thing is to try and have fun and use you imagination, make fun of comic tropes if you want, just have fun. The thing that I like about running this quest is the ability to use crazy-retarded ideas as workable inventions. Good luck.

I think what we're trying to say is be the middleground. Because we all make mistakes and most likely regardless of what we say, you will too.
>>
>>40683509
I tried character gen in the last quest I did. It was actually ridiculous. I might maybe let the players choose gender and maybe give them a choice between three or four different powers and that is absolutely it. Also, I won't give the choice of powers directly.
>>40683673
Character gen can garner some interest, but I don't think it's worth the shitposting. I think I've found a happy middle ground, but I guess we'll see.
