"Stops squirmings!"

You whine and try your best to stop fidgeting as Garush tightens the leather straps binding the hardened leather breastplate of your new armor around your torso, the oiled black skin pressing tight against your fur. You yelp as the laces catch a bit of your fur and the orc grumbles, poking a small twig between them to loose the bit of hair from its confines. Finally, you're suited up, the flat metalic scales catching the daylight streaming through the window. The chaps had come on first, followed by the underlayer and then the breastplate. It was easy enough to move in, but it still didn't compare to going in clothes alone.

You whine a bit as Garush steps back to look over you, walking about you and straightening an errant knot here or there. "I have to says, it looks all rights. Nots perfects, but nots bads eithers. How does it feels?"

"Weird..." you whimper softly, taking a few experimental steps. The extra weight is negligible, but present. You shift your footing and take up a boxer's stance, finding it hard to move quite as well as you had before. You take a half-hearted swing, and find that while your movement isn't limited, it's not quite right either.

"It'll takes somes gettings useds toos, Nadias, but at least you'll bes betters offs if you gets attackeds agains." He reaches out and pats your head gently. Emma sits, watching the whole process from Garush's stool, as Djanna sits cross-legged on the floor before the fireplace, a blush on her cheeks. The orc turns to her. "All rights. Your turns nows."

"I... I think I can get it on myself..."

"Nothin' doin's. It's hards enoughs ta gets light armors on, lets alones plate. C'mon, stands up. I won'ts go proddin's ya likes some drunkens sailor on shore leave. I promises, ah'll be a gentleman."

"...promise?" She looks up at him with lidded, timid eyes. The orc nods.

Emma rolls her eyes.

A short time later, both you and Djanna are armored, and standing before Nurrim and Garush, the two looking on appraisingly.

"It looks a bit cumbersome, don't you think?"

"I tinks it looks fines. Dey'll be glads dey haves it when dey needs it."

"I wonder about that. Seems if it hinders their movement..."

"Nuttin' doin's. Dey just needs ta learns hows ta handles it."

You pant softly, the black leather keeping the air from your skin and making you sweat. Djanna looks like she's all right in her breastplate, greaves, and gauntlets. That, or she can't really move. You whine softly. Why doesn't SHE ned an under-layer!?

You turn to your sister, looking from her bare claws, up her plated legs, over the studded-leather skirt, taking in her bare midriff, bracers, gauntlets, breastplate, and finally the open-faced helm she wears. It seems at once less restricting and a lot heavier than what you're wearing. At least she's not one for running around when she's fighting, but it doesn't seem fair. You hate to admit it, but you might be feeling...

"Djanna! Spar with me!"

"W-what?"

You grab the dragon girl by the wrist and start leading her outside, her mail rattling as you drag her along.

"C'mon, we need to learn how to fight in this stuff, right? Think of it like practice back in the warrens! It's fine, we'll just go easy with it. More about moving around than... than actually fighting." Sure. That sounds good, right?

"But I barely remember any of that! Surely Garush would be better, or... or even Nurrim!" She sounds like she's pleading, but you'll have none of it. You step through the outer door into the light snow drifting from above, the hazy sunlight struggling through the clouds. Djanna whines at the cold under her feet, and you take a few steps across the paving stones and turn to face her.

"We'll start off slow. C'mon, you wanna get captured again?"

Djanna looks at you, wide-eyed, before she bites her lip hard and looks to the ground. She trembles lightly for a moment before she looks up at you, eyes narrowed, and takes a position across from you, fists raised.

The wind picks up slightly, and you wait patiently for Djanna to move. She seems to be doing the same. Time seems to stretch on between the two of you, before finally, she moves.

She rushes forward, claws scraping against the paving stones before she takes a clumsy swipe at you, and you easily bat it out of the way. She follows with another, offhand, and you catch it. She spins, slapping you with the bulk of her tail, and you barely even feel it.

Huh. Maybe this stuff's not so bad anyway.

She twists, jerking her hand out of yours and taking a step back, trying to slam into you. You step back in response, moving more on instinct at this point than anything, and if it weren't for her tail she'd have overbalanced and fallen. Still, you have to admire her ingenuity, trying to leverage the weight of her armor.

She growls in frustration, turning about as she steps back again, swinging her tail in a wide arc, forcing you out of its range, and she comes to a stop facing you and panting. Sweat glistens on her forehead, snow melting as soon as it touches her skin, and her breath comes in short, white puffs.

You, on the other hand, are barely warmed up.

You take the opportunity to move, not giving her a chance to catch her breath. With her guard down, you dash forward and take a quick swing at her stomach, pulling your punch, though she still grunts and doubles over. You turn, reaching up and wrapping your arm around her neck and with a snarl of effort, lift her and slam her into the stones, armor ringing like a bell. She cries out in shock, and you sigh, taking a seat on her breastplate.

Garush has joined you outside, leaning against the large door to the warehouse and shaking his head. Djanna struggles under you, unable to right herself.

"Nadia! Let me up! C'mon, get off! You're gonna dent my armor! C'mooooon!"

"So, Garush. Any pointers for Djanna? She seems to be having a little trouble moving around..."

Garush shakes his head. "I ain't nevahs used armors befores. I don'ts sees da points innit. A course, I nevahs needed it. I always favored da 'hits 'em first, hits 'em hards' way a' fightin's."

Djanna continues to struggle under you, but your jaw drops. "Then why do we have to wear armor!?"

"Because ya ain'ts strong enough ta dents a piece a' steel mail with ya bare hands."

You growl softly and stand. Djanna tries to right herself unsuccessfully, and you reach down to help her.

"Besides, ya seems to haves it downs. Ya didn't seems ta haves any problems movins."

You blink slowly. You didn't even notice the weight of the armor once you'd started fighting, even if it wasn't too serious.
>>
>>40685189
"It's fine. Maybe I should just go unarmored after all. Maybe I can get some of the money back." Djanna looks down at her gauntlets, frowning. Garush shakes his head and crosses to her, laying a hand over hers.

"Ya'll gets da hangs a' it. Don't worries. Besides, ya mights be ables ta finds someones who cans helps ya figures it outs where yas goin'."

She frowns, but eventually nods. You bound over to them, your tail swishing.

"So you're really sending us off, then? You're not coming with us?" You whine softly.

"Afraid nots. It's startings ta freeze, an' I gots ta stays here. Otherwise, da bunkhouse won't haves anyones ta watch it. Asides, I can'ts leaves Nurrim an' Maya, right? If I goes wit' yas, I'll be stucks out deres till da thaws. Ah'm sorry, girls..." He frowns and, suddenly, scooops you both up in a massive bear-hug.

"The thaw!?" you balk, pulling back to look at the orc in disbelief. You don't exactly know what that is, but something in the depths of your mind tells you that it will be quite some time, and if you have to wait till then- "So we won't see you for a long time!? How long?"

The orc shakes his head, carrying the two of you over to and taking a seat on the long bench in front of the bunkhouse, settling the both of you on his knees. "I don'ts quites knows, girls. Ah'm sorrys... buts dere ain'ts a lots a ships dat cans gets ins an' outs a here once da harbor starts ta freeze. Dere's de ice-breakers, but dose only comes from da capital, an den only on officials business. It won't bes too- oh, Nadia, don'ts ya starts cryin' nows..."

You sniffle, reaching up and rubbing the tears into the fluff of your face with the backs of your hands. Damn it, no. You're a big girl, and big girls don't cry! Besides, you'll see him again! But... but...

You bury your face in his chest and bawl, arms tight around him. He sighs and leans over you, patting you on the back, grimacing and trying to intimidate a stray tear back into his eye unsuccessfully.

"Dere dere, now. Ah know it'll be scary an' all, but yer strongs, an' Djanna 'ere is capables, an' Emma's sharps as a whips. I gots no questions dat da threes of yas will bes jus' fines."

"So we really won't be able to come back here for a while..." Djanna mutters, shifting on Garush's knee, staring pointedly anywhere but at him. "Will you and Nurrim be okay?"

"Hah! I been okays sinces afore ya cames alongs, girly! Ah'll be fines witout yas for a fews months." His lip could almost be said to quiver, if a man were daring.

"Months!?" You grip him harder, nuzzling into him. You're not sure why you're so emotional, honestly. The idea of being away from him is upsetting, certainly, but it's nothing you can't handle with your sisters at your side.
>>
>>40685654
Finally, you've calmed down enough to release him. He smiles down at you and musses your hair affectionately. "Feels bettahs?" You nod with a whine, trying to right your hair.

"Well... I suppose we should get ready." Djanna slips from his lap, turning to give him a hug. "Thank you, Garush... I'll miss you..."

"Don't yas gets mushy on me, girls. Yer gonnas be backs sooner'n ya thinks. Asides, gives me a chance ta fix a fews tings arounds heres. Maybe spends some more times at da taverns..." He hugs you both one more time before rising and turning for the door to the bunkhouse. He raises his arm to his face just after he crosses the threshold. "Huh... sun mustas gottens in mah eyes..."

A minute later, Emma slips out, bundled up in her coat. "So, why was Garush crying?"

Djanna shrugs, and you just shake your head.

"Either way, we leave tonight. Is there anything else we have left to do?"

You shake your head, taking deep breaths to steady yourself. "No, I think we're... we're good. We have our supplies, we have what we need, we have the letter we're supposed to give Jakt... right?"

Djanna nodded. "It's in the pack, along with the medicine kit."

You nod as well, and lay a hand on Emma's head lightly. She grumps softly, but folds down an ear to make room for you. You pet her gently, looking up at the bunkhouse with a wistful sigh. You're not sure why you feel so strange today, but you shrug it off. "Hey... before we go, why don't we see Maya? See if she-"

"Have fun. Tell her I said 'die'." Emma turns on her heel, heading back into the bunkhouse.

=================================

"Nadia. Welcome, welcome. What can I do for you?" Maya looks up at you as you enter, her goblin companions nowhere in sight. She lounges lazily on the couch in the front room, something bubbling in her lab in the back. She sits with an grunt, eyeing you and Djanna from below long, black lashes.

"Well, we're going to be leaving. Tonight. We just wanted to see if you needed anything before we did." Djanna leans forward, her tail tip flicking lightly.

Maya smiles that same sweet, poisonous smile that you first witnessed when you met her in the mountains. It's not malicious, but it still makes your skin crawl. "Oh, it's good of you to ask... but that muscle-head takes care enough of me. I have to say, you three have him well trained. Speaking of, where's your pet fox?"

"Oh!" you perk up, wagging. "She wanted me to tell you to g-"

Djanna claps her claw over your mouth quickly. "Get a lot of work done while we're away. Yes. That was it."

You whine, but Djanna keeps her hand where it is. Maya eyes the two of you suspiciously, but doesn't press it.
>>
>>40686192
"Well, no matter. Actually, there is something you can do for me. FRELP!" She shouts, and a few moments later, the goblin shuffles out of the back wearing a heavy leather apron, gloves, and a mask.

"You bellow?"

"Bring them the box."

He grumbles and disappears into the back, returning a few moments later holding a squat, square box, much like the one containing your final bottle of life. He sets it carefully on the floor before you and retreats back to the hallway. Maya shakes her head derisively and gestures to the box.

"There are a few new concoctions I've cooked up. Before I use them myself, I want to know how they handle in action. You can take care of that, right? Surely you're liable to run into somebody you don't mind experimenting on."

The two of you make your way to the bunkhouse and gather your things. Nurrim sees you each off with a hug and a few kind words, lingering several longer moments with Emma.

"Are you sure you won't stay behind? We just found one-another again..."

"Nadia is my sister too, and where she goes, so do I. Besidrs, she needs me more than you. We'll be safe, and be back before you know it. I promise." She rubs noses with the elder kitsune before bounding to your side. Djanna and Garush exchange more sedate farewells, and yiu find yourself giving them each another spine-cracking hug before the orc finally shuffles you off toward the harbor.

"Ya comes back, safes an' sounds... Ya hears me?"

You nod with a whine, nuzzling him cheek to cheek, before bounding uo the gangplank, following Djanna's tail.

>>40687053
You lean out over the guard rail of the ship, staring at the waves quietly. You'd been to sea for three weeks now, and you had all but become a different person. Your armor fit a bit tighter in the chest, your chaps and breeches tighter in the hips, and a bit too short. Wherever you were going, you really hoped that there was a tailor, and that they worked cheap.

Djanna had been complaining of the constant motion, and poor Emma had barely kept a meal down since you left port. The three of you, being the only women aboard, shared a cabin. Tempers had been tense for reasons that none of you could quite adequately explain, and so you'd taken to avoiding the room save for once the sun had set and the three of you could sleep. It wasn't as though you didn't love them, that was far from it! You just...

You shake your head with a whine and press he heels of your hands to your temples, flattening your ears back. "Rrrrrr, damn it, why am I going crazy!?"

The sea, contemptuous bitch that she is, does not reveal her secrets.

Finally, you slip away from the railing and turn, setting about to pace the confines of the deck. Emma was curled up below, probably paralyzed with stomach pains, and Djanna was likely spending time with the captain or navigator, learning what she was able. You haven't anything to do. At all. >>
>>40687578
You pace about the deck, climbing the stairs to the helm and finding the helmsman steering course. A quick inquiry, and you go below, to the captain's quarters, and find Djanna leaning over a larger map of the Silver Sea and the land masses surrounding it.She's speaking in hushed tones, plotting a course directly across to the other side, skirting around a small archipelago in the center.

"And so we catch the winds, moving south around the islands, and we do that by-"

Djanna nods, clearly not catching on to much of it, but she's listening attentively none the less and the navigator - an old human man - dotes on her, explaining things as best he can when. He smiles at you as you enter, gesturing to a chair and going back to his little lesson. Djanna's attention remains focused, though she favored you with a nod. You leaned on the table, watching the two, until the captain's bellow from above called the navigator away with a bustle, leaving the two of you alone.

"Hey. How are you feeling?" you ask quietly, looking up at the dragon girl with a soft wag of your tail.

"Exhausted. He's a sweet man, but he liks to drone on so." She stretches, twisting her neck and tail about to limber them up. "What have you been up to all morning?"

"Just out and about on deck. There's nowhere to run around here. Nowhere to move. It's stifling..." you whine, sprawling fully across the table, your tail drooping. She nods and lays her hand on your head, stroking softly. Mmmmmyeah, that feels nice...

"And how's Emma? Did the herb tea help?"
>>
>>40688278
You shake your head, sniffing and sneezing lightly as you dislodge some dust from the large sea map. "She was still whimpering when I left this morning, poor thing. Hopefully she'll be better by nightfall."

Djanna nods and takes a seat beside you, sighing. "Only a few more days, hm? Then we get to relax for a bit. I mean, really relax. None of this being stuck out to-"

Screams of terror from outside draw your attention, the both of you snapping to your feet. You turn, reaching the door before Djanna, throwing it open in time for a wall of flame to explode across the deck, the impact sending sailors overboard shrieking, splintering the central mast and reducing the splinters to a cloud of ash and cinders. You slam the door shut just in time, flames licking through the cracks around it.

An unholy shriek overhead, followed by an explosive "boom" as the ship lurches, informs you in no uncertain terms that you have been boarded.

I stay healthy enough (hah!) to have never needed to visit a hospital.
I just figured mobile providers would be all about managing to get their service to extend to a bunch of bedridden people with nothing to do all day.
>>
There is a lot of sensitive equipment in a hospital. Stuff that depends on EM emissions and having cell reception can throw them out of whack.
>>
>>40695904
Sure, but that's why they build those specific rooms with shielding (not least because it works both ways).
They're not gonna lead-line (or whatever technique they actually use) the entire building - far cheaper to just proof the designated rooms.

You throw open the door, and you and Djanna are forced back by undulating waves of heat and fire. Through the narrow opening, the deck is engulfed, sailors howling as they throw themselves overboard, the few brave or foolish enough to stand and fight succumbing to the flames in short order. Towering above them, crowned by two long, blazing golden crests, is a serpentine head with wrath in its red eyes. It opens its mouth, shrieking in challenge to whatever may be listening, and rears back, exposing its massive orange-plated chest, red scales scintillating in the flames. Long, baleful black claws seem to direct the clouds of smoke raising from the burning wood. It towers above the shattered ruins of the main mast, smoke curling past the end of its maw.

"What the..."

Djanna seems stunned speechless behind you as you stand in the doorway, the burning heat doing little more than drying your eyes and making your breaths come a bit shorter. Every movement of the fiend on deck shakes the entire ship, causing it to rock about in the waves.

"Hang ye, ya beast! I'll not suffer beasts a' yer like on my ship!" The captain, saber in hand, descends the stairs from the helm, glaring daggers at the beast. He roars a challenge, and the beast snarls, bending down and turning its head to take in the captain with one massive eye. Great crimson wings momentarily block out the sun as the dragon beats them, blowing the deck clear of flame and smoke. Its massive tail dangles off the end, cutting through the waves with each casual flick.

"Nadia!" Djanna hisses at you, crawling forward and gripping your shoulder, her eyes wide. "W-what should we do?"

Yeah we really need to get Emma. She's been so sea sick she might not be able to navigate her way out of the chaos alone. The captain probably has at least some skill to back up his bark if he's challenging a dragon, but maybe he's just too angry to think.

Getting Emma and having Djanna try and talk it down wins. Writing.
>>
>>40699893
You look between the Captain, Djanna, and the hatch leading below deck, shattered by the dragon's impact on the deck. You bite your lip lightly, mind working overtime. "Djanna... can you... talk to it?"

"What!?" The dragon girl squeezes your shoulder as she squeaks in fright, and you lay a paw over her claw.

"One of us needs to get Emma, and I'm faster. If you and the captain can keep it busy, I can run down and get her and then we can all get out of here! I don't need to you do anything stupid, I just need you to keep it busy... can you?" You turn to her with a pleading look in your eyes. You grip her by her other hand tightly. "I need you to be brave right now... I need you."

She swallows deeply as the beast shrieks, slamming its claws into the deck, sending splintered boards into the air. The captain dances forward, slashing at the beast's hand and raising sparks.

"I... okay. But, hurry. I don't know what I can do, or how long I can do it for."

You nod and turn back to the fight, the beast snapping down at the human and getting a blade in its snout for its trouble. It rears back, shouting in indignation, and you make a dash for it, leaping and sliding on your stomach down the stairs and into the darkness below. You hear the timbers overhead creak under the monster's weight, feel the heat of the smouldering wood pressing in against you through the smoke-choked confines of the gangway. You cough, covering your mouth with a paw as you crouch, trying to keep low as you inch forward. You hear the shrieking and sounds of battle above have stilled, and Djanna's voice coming indistinctly, growing fainter as you advance. Finally, you come to your cabin. You shoulder the door open with a grunt, and find Emma lying, unconscious, between your berths.
>>
>>40700607
You dash to her side and fall to her side, rolling her over and pulling her onto your knees. Her face and cheek are bruised, and she whines softly as you cradle her. Damn... you didn't think the ship listed that heavily. And with Emma out of it... still, no help for it. You quickly grab hold of your pack and Djanna's, shouldering them with a grunt before scooping the girl into one arm and resting her on your shoulder. You make your way through the smoky dimness, but as you approach the stairs above, you hear a sibilant hiss, deep and rumbling.

"Sssssssssssssssssyleeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..."

Djanna shrieks, and the ship rocks violently, tossing you against the wall. You hear the low, sonorous creaking of wood below the level of water, and the ship begins to crack in a way that ties knots in your stomach. You rush above in time to hear the beating of wings, the press of wind from above blowing your hair and fur about violently, Emma's hair billowing up in front of your face like a black curtain, barely obstructing the image of Djanna above, struggling in the dragon's grip, as the beast rockets out to sea, towards the archipelago in the distance. The captain is nowhere to be seen as the ship gives another lurch, beginning to shake apart. You curse softly under your breath, rushing for one of the lifeboats and laying Emma and your gear inside. You move a leg over the side, laying a foot on the cross-beam, when a final jerk shakes the ship, and it shifts underfoot.

The securing line, weakened by flame, snaps free.

You roll forward as the lifeboat begins to drop, and it's only by virtue of digging your claws into the wood that you remain inside. The surf flies up into the boat, dousing both you and Emma as it impacts, the flames of the ship proper slowly being doused as it begins to sink below the water's surface. You shake yourself dry with a sneeze, and moving frantically, grab hold of the oars and, after struggling with them for a few minutes, give up and begin paddling the lifeboat like a canoe, your immense strength the only thing allowing you to do so.

You pull away from the sinking ship, panting heavily as the air clears, the salt spray replacing the choking reek of smoke. Adrift, with only the wreck behind you, and the archipelago in the distance, you've no choice lest you want to be lost at sea: You paddle for land, following the dragon's path.

===========================================

Nightfall finds you carrying Emma ashore, your arms screaming in agony as you bear the weight of both packs across your shoulders. The tiny girl hasn't stirred a bit, her pale skin blazing red from the sun. You cross the sands, the ground shifting under your feet as you move inland, into the stand of trees forming a barrier between beach and inland. You saw no smoke, heard no sounds of people or beasts. Hopefully, you'd find no trouble here.

You settle the kitsune down on the ground and she whines in her unconsciousness, shifting as if trying to rouse herself. You slowly undress her, squeezing the salt water from her clothing and tossing them over a low tree branch to dry. Though, given the humidity...
>>
>>40701282
The night has become marginally cooler, though at the moment anything not the heat of the sun is by its nature frigid, as you take stock of your supplies: Some rations, the medical kit, a few odds and sundries, some coin. There's not much to be said of it, really.

You settle down beside Emma with a sigh, laying your greatcoat over her with a concerned whimper. Hopefully she'll rouse herself soon... and the two of you can set about finding Djanna. You lay beside her, falling into a fitful slumber.

You wake to singing, much like what you'd heard when you first met Sylea. You struggle through the heavy blanket of sleep to consciousness. The silvery moonlight shines through the leaves overhead, dappling the ground with moonlight. Emma sounds as if she's breathing more easily, but she remains as she was. You look about quickly: This small place you've found seems well hidden enough, something like a blind tunnel back home. The growth of the trees lead to a blind trail, and you've secreted yourself and Emma under the twisted roots of a large trunk. She should be safe, for now.

You make certain that Emma is covered before you slip from your hiding place, the tiny girl on your back, and move carefully through the darkness. Your eyes take in the light of the moon, reflecting and empowering it, rendering the whole copse as if lit by the noon sun. You set foot on the sand, and you see three figures standing around your boat, pale as phantoms. Their skin shimmers silver, their heads bald save for long fins where the ears on a man might be, and long ridges on their forearms and forelegs. They wear simple breech-clothes, their lanky forms bare besides. They carry long daggers on their waists, each sheathed and hilted in tight, grey skin

What you had taken for singing seems to be speech, as they gesture between one-another, the boat, and then inland, with each gesticulation interspersed with teh same quasi-musical notes. One, whose ridges seem slightly larger than the others, seems to be the one to whom the other two defer. He nods to something they say, tilting his head inland and turning to lay a webbed foot on the sand. Far, far in the distance, you hear an echoing roar, and the three strangers cringe away from it. None the less, undaunted, the three move forward. One stops near the tree line, turning to watch the shores. As they grow closer, your nose twitches. The scent of fresh fish and salt toys with your nostrils, and you're not sure why but it makes your hunger grow.

Emma nuzzles against you, whining as you feel her slowly, numbly move her arms up around your neck. "M... mama..."

"Shh... Emma, it's me. Nadia..."

"Nadi..." She whined slowly, shifting against your back. "I hurt..."

"I know. Shhh. We're not alone. Just relax. We're heading back. Be quiet for just a little longer."

You feel her nod against your back and you readjust her, slinking back into the trees, moving toward your hideaway. You hear the luminescent figures crashing through the brush, not taking any care to be stealthy. It makes them easy enough to evade, at any rate. Minutes later, you and Emma are hidden once again below the tree, and the young fox girl whimpers, poking softly at her face.

"What happened?" she asks quietly. She sounds dazed, worried, and every bit as small as she looks. You tell her briefly about what happened, and she frowns softly. "I'm sorry... it's my f-"

"Don't even start." you snap with a frown, tail thrashing in irritation. "It's not your fault, and so help me, you might not be my pup, but you're not to big to take over my knee." She flinches, and your expression softens. You'd only meant it as a joke...

"Sorry... but we're going after her, right?"

You nod vigorously. "Of course we are. As soon as I figure out where we're going."

She whines and leans back, crossing her arms over her bare chest. "If I knew... maybe-"

You hear a grunt from far above, the sound of something dropping, followed by the heavy impact of something landing on the roots above. A shower of dirt and twigs from above jars both of you from your conversation. A single large yellow eye glares down at you through the branches, a mess of wild hair and feminine form visible against the moonlight.

"KEK! I take you myself tomorrow, if you stop yammering like hatchlings so I sleep!"

You are pressed against the far back of the small-ish enclosure, Emma tight against your side, both of your eyes wide in the dark.

"Rrrr... don't scare us like that!" you snarl, baring your teeth at the creature in the shadows above you. You hear the creaking of roots, the tapping of talons on the wood above. "Who the hell are you, anyway?"

"Me!? You squat under my tree like bug, and ask me me!? I run far, so am Far-Runner! And what name are you, KEK!?" The noise at the end, high-pitched, like a strangled squawk. Whatever - whoever - it is, they jump off the tangled mess of roots, landing on the ground with a heavy thump, turning and looking down at you. Their sillhouette... it almost defies description. Short and squat in the body, with very broad hips and long legs, it looks every bit like some manner of gigantic, fat, flightless bird. The creature's talons, on the other hand... those you can see in the dim light, long and lethal, with the middle one rising above the others in a murderous arc, as if with a single motion...

You growl again, edging ahead of Emma. "Okay... whatever your name is-"

"KEKKEKKEK! Not 'whatever!' 'Far-Runner!' 'Strong-Leg!' Shark-Hunter and Squid-Eater! KEK!"

"Nnng... just pick a name..." Emma whines, pressing against you. You hear her begin mumbling the words to a spell, but you've been around her long enough to know she's slurring words here and there.

"FAR-RUNNER! I SAID I-"

"Whatever, fine!" You growl quietly, rising to your feet. "I'm sorry, okay!? I didn't mean to wake you, but with all the squawking you're making, you're going to attract their attention! So would you please-"
>>
>>40702519
Too late, you hear the musical tones. The clearing is lit more brightly as the moonlight seems to increase in strength, further illuminating the bird creature. Gods, you thought the tar slimes were ugly. Her hair is unkempt, strewn with bits of twigs and leaves. Her skin is sun-darkened and pockmarked, and her build is pear-shaped in a bad way. Her arms - if you could call them that - resemble wings more so than anything else, though the feathers on them are far too small as to ever suggest, let alone support, flight. Her tail feathers are short and rough, with several missing in places.

She squawks, turning. The two silver-skinned creatures stand at the opening of the blind path, the leader with his dagger in hand, the other with hands stretched upward, singing softly.

"KEK! YOU BROUGHT FOOD!? ALL FORGIVEN!"

Weird bird lady didn't attack us. Weird fish people didn't attack us but they didn't see us and were tracking us, perhaps they want to help, but perhaps not what with approaching with a dagger and all.

You lean back against Emma, who lays her forehead between your shoulders. The shadows deepen around the two of you, darkening your little sanctuary. It becomes hard to see what is going on outside, but you hear that repetitive, high-pitched cawing, scuffling, and the musical shrieking of the two silver-skinned figures. Eventually, silence falls, and the light outside the illusion diminishes. Emma releases her own spell, panting heavily. You feel sweat dampening the back of your neck.

"DAMN-DAMN! SNEAKY-SWIFTY SILVERY FISHY! DAMN!" You feel the ground thumping, small shockwaves even reaching you through your armor as the bird-creature stamps the earth in her frustration. One of her claws is slick with something shimmering blue-black in the moonlight. She raises her claw to her mouth, licking greedily at the blood, almost desperately. "Sweeeeet... so sweet-sweet..." She looks down the path, mumbling to herself before turning back to the tree and stalking toward it, more reptilian than avian. She bends down, looking below the roots. "Still live, loudlings? KEK!"

You nod, mumbling the affirmative and the bird woman smiles, revealing rotted teeth. "Good! Now, sweet-sleep now. Tomorrow, take see island king, KEK! Yes, red-scale will want very-very yes. KEK!"

You don't answer her, your eyes unable to move from her one gore-slick claw. The creature leans back and takes a mighty leap, easily clearing seven feet and landing in a low branch. The limb creaks again, then the other, then another as she climbs the tree, returning to the upper branches.

"...Nadia... I'm scared..."

The two of you flinch, and to the sound of muttering above, you settle down to sleep. Morning comes all too soon, and when the two of you rise, you help Emma dress before slipping out from beneath the cage of roots, the packs on your back, before reaching back for the kitsune. With a yawn and a whimper as the sunlight hits her burnt face, she ducks into the shadows, eyes darting about as if expecting to be attacked.

From above, a yawn, and then the creaking of branches and rustling of leaves, as Far-Runner descends from above. She's uglier by day, her features warped, her feathers discolored and mange-eaten, her skin yellowed. Your stomach churns. If there were anything in it...

"Ahh, morning-morning, yes? Now, come. Food-food first! Then we go-go. KEK!" Her eyes turn to Emma, lingering perhaps a little too long for your liking, before she takes off down the trail, moving fast enough that you doubt you could keep up with her.

Emma just holds up her arms and you scoop her up, taking off along the path after the bird-woman.

"So what are you, anyway?" You don't even consider that it might be rude, and Far-Runner doesn't seem to mind as she lets out another loud 'Kek.'

"Far-Runner is pretty bird! Harpy-Harpy KEK!" You frown and readjust Emma at your chest, and the kitsune turns to look forward.

"Harpy? Then why didn't you fly last night?"

Far-Runner stops dead in her path, tail feathers - or what's left of them - bristling as she slowly turns toward you. "What did the morsel say?"

Oh, she did not.

You growl and set Emma down, balling your fists and taking a step forward, interposing yourself between the kitsune and the bird-woman. "Call her a 'morsel' again..."

Far-Runner eyes you appraisingly, from your bare feet to your quivering ear-tips, before she lets her feathers lie back down. "Far-Runner squawk too much too loud, KEKEK! Meant nothing, sweetling, nothing-nothing!"

You snarl, but for now, let it go. You don't have much choice, unless you want to spend who knows how long scouring the islands.

"Where is it you're taking us?" You ask as Emma holds close behind you.

"Pool! Sweet-sweet, cool! Fresh silverskins, KEK! Delicious!" She raises a 'wing,' gripping a deforemed flight feather in her teeth and plucking it out with a wrench. She cackles and spits it out on the ground, and sets off at a slower pace through the woods. Finally, you break through the woods to a small pool, and true to her word, the water is clear and fresh clear to the bottom, a few fat, shimmering fish swimming near the top. The fat wretch stalks around the outer edge, looking down as if shopping before she leaps into the pond, spearing one of the fish with her razor-sharp claws, fouling the pool with blood.

Look, I'm going to level with you: You're doing all right, but your first quest is always going to suck. You seem to have lost a lot of players since the early threads, so your best bet is to wrap this one up and start planning the next one if you really think you want to be a QM. Of course, since people have probably learned not to trust you I wouldn't keep the name.

It doesn't, though. I'm quite enjoying this.

>You seem to have lost a lot of players since the early threads
That happens with most quests, though the shift in focus didn't help. Still, there seem to be enough players around most of the time.

>your best bet is to wrap this one up and start planning the next one if you really think you want to be a QM.
Fuck you with a rusty battleaxe.

>>40709544
You can't deny a dip in quality recently. It's clear he either can't keep things up to the standard set in the beginning, or he's running out of ideas.

even if I missed the thread I can see that the QM's health isn't so well. That has to account for something?
>>

He said it was just some kind of check-up, and he's out already. And besides, I'm not just talking about this thread, I mean everything since about sixteen on.
>>
>>40709143
I'm still here and enjoying this. It's a refreshing change to have choices with consequences and not always being able to do everything just because of rolls.

It's like we actually have to think about what we do.
>>
>>40709584
It's possible he's gotten frustrated with the shitposting about the setting having dark elements. I wouldn't be surprised if it's had a negative impact on the writing.

I'm not really a good judge of quality when it comes to writing, since unless there are serious and major issues my brain usually just glazes over any minor flaws and categorizes it as like/don't like, and this quest is still in the like category.

>>40709654
I don't think they use anesthesia for check-ups.

>>40709720
I'm glad to hear it. I'm not trying to be a hardass, I just think zero consequences makes for a boring time.

Lotus, keep up what you're doing.
>>
>>40712589
Stop encouraging him, or at least give some constructive criticism.

Like, maybe spell out what the choices actually mean. "Waiting till morning" and "waiting for a bit, then running for it" don't really tell you what's going to happen.
>>
>>40712891
How the fuck does that not tell you what's going to happen? You either wait for the harpy to wake up and hope she'll take you to the dragon, or you wait until she's asleep and leg it yourself.
>>
>>40712937
He gives no indication which one will work, or if either one will. How will we know what advances the story or what ends in one of his "herp herp bad end" wankfests?
>>
>>40712960
Vaelys stop being an ass. Uncertainty happens, not every quest is a hug box.
>>
>>40713017
It's not about being a hugbox, it's about having a clear indication of what effect your actions have in the quest. I don't want to vote for an option that's going to get us killed.
>>
>>40712960
>correct choice
>wrong choice
>write-in

Is that what you want? Push space to kill enemy? Roll a 1 or better to win everything?
>>
>>40713065
Since it's a roll under, it'd be 100 or less, but yeah. It'd simplify things, we'd get a more streamlined story, and there wouldn't be any more retarded tone-changes.
>>
>>40713051
The options were as clear as fucking day. You can guess at the repurcussions, however the QM isn't gontonspoonfeed you. Stop whining about consequences and use your brain. Besides saying everything leads to either good end bad end is retarded.
>>
>>40713077
And now I know you're just shitposting. Congratulations.
>>
>>40713080
We went to help Emma, and Djanna got kidnapped. How is that not railroading to you?
>>
>>40712960
Right. That's because as the player it is your job to weigh up the likelihood of the options' success and then make a decision.

Why give us choices if he then tells us one is correct and the other is wrong?
>>
>>40713122
Because he's Lotus, and he's a faggot who likes to see us fail?
>>
>>40713110
>hur dur I no like consequences
We sent her to talk to a hostile dragon, she could easily have ended up dead.
>>
>>40713110
>Anything happens
"RAILROADING! SCREEEEECH!"

Do you want it such that we need to dial a hotline when we get bored to request Happenings to spice up utterly mundane SoL then?
Though I reckon Lotus could probably pull of SoL well enough.

>>40713138
If you're so utterly convinced the QM wants to see us fail for ever and ever, why do you want him to drop this quest and start a new one? You do realise that if he is dead set on having the players fail that would carry forward to a new quest too right?
No of course you don't, you're literally braindead.
>>
>>40713140
>Implying she isn't.
>Or worse.
Think he's dumb enough to go rape cave?
>>
>>40713151
Because I don't think he'll be dumb enough to pull a change-over on us again. If he promises SoL, he'll deliver.
Or he'd be well advised ot, if he wants to keep the few readers he has left.
>>
>>40713168
Sure, but he doesn't get enough fun from writing pure SoL. Writing SoL is boring as fuck.
He simply wouldn't promise a SoL quest, just like he never did the first time you utterly autistic moron.
The meaning that you took from what he said and the meaning that his words held are utterly different and how fucking deluded do you have to be to still not comprehend this?
>>
>>40713168
First you tried the blatant asshole approach, now you're going for the "it's for your own good" approach. Just go away

>few readers he has left.

>>
>>40713196
The first post was two days ago. I'm sure some ips have reset, and a lot of them are doubled up. I'd wager he has fewer than twenty readers. I don't know about you, but I don't unfollow everyone I quit deciding to pay attention to.
>>
>>40713207
He said the mc would be a cute kobold on adventures no More no less.
>>
>>40713168
My favourite part of quest arguments is when the shitposter resorts to talking like a bad crime show antagonist. You want to threaten to smash up his store while you're at it?
>>
>>40713255
I think you're remembering a very different thread. I was in the proto-quest discussion thread. Where are you getting this?
>>
>>40713207
The characters are extremely cute. They have adorable moments all the time. They also take part in an adventure which has serious threats and dangers. This does not make the cute moments stop being cute and in fact serves to enhance them by providing contrast. He upheld his premise of cute bold going on an adventure. Our current situation is practically Disney tier.
>>
>>40713322
The discussion of snake where the redirection of it was canned. Cute kobold adventures means a cute kobold on adventures, not a kobold having cute adventures. The only RE quest that has been cute the majority of the time is harpy, cause it's still baby stage. Even then life and consequences happened.
>>
>>40713359
For now. and when we get attacked by Marabi? Which he has said will happen?
>>
>>40713443
Oh no! A recurring antagonist! Run for the hiiiiiillllllssssssss
>>
>>40713443
Then we probably get our ass kicked a little bit, win and escape through clever thinking, and then ultimately end up defeating him in a suitably ironic fashion using the power of friendship. Probably by throwing him off a roof.

You know, like a Disney movie.
>>
>>40713472
>defeating him in a suitably ironic fashion
Skinning him and making a coat out of it?
>>
>>40713443
We face the big bad of the arc and hopefully defeat him in a heroic face off where Nadia faces her fear of the boogeyman. With luck his God and Yra are on bad terms and Smite is a valid option.
>>
>>40713483
No using his skins to make the noise tha hangs him.
>>
>>40713483
Maybe in our dramatic stormy night roof battle, we'll get him on the ropes and make him berserk. In his fury, he'll fail to realize that his coat has become caught on some part of the roof, slip, and hang himself. Or maybe it'll get stuck on something that's falling and drag him down to his death.

Really, it's almost certainly going to involve the coat getting caught on something.
>>
>>40713511
>make the noise
>Taking all his skins, stretching them taut over hollow chambers, playing him the song of our people...
>>
>>40713524
Probably not a bad idea. If his power comes from his skins, and with Emma and Djanna knowing fire magic...
>>
>>40713511
Surprisingly enough I could see a Disney movie doing that. Not an actual nose but him falling and his skins get caught on something and choke him (to death off screen).
>>
>>40713528

>>
>>40713538
Watch Tarzan, it's happened already.
>>
>>40713538
I think it'd be more likely that in the stormy battle his coat gets caught on a lightning rod as the protagonist escapes or gets swept off the roof by the rain/wind and then the villain gets electrocuted.

It's more overkill and abrupt and flashy so it doesn't have to be shown for as long whilst leaving less of a doubt that the villain might have survived.

>>40713543
I know.
>>
>>40713578
That's a good one. We'll have to make sure we stick to cities when he starts popping up again.
