It's been days since your encounter with the spider demon in the woods, and you haven't received any information on who or what might have summoned her.

In fact, aside from the presence of Kaya in school, things have been pretty normal since Monday. You've gone to class every day, spent some time with Bruce, and studied for the finals.

You've asked Kaya if she's learned anything each day, but her answer is always a disappointed explanation that Koenma and Spirit World Intelligence have found nothing of note. Not one single solitary bit of information that could tell you what you need to know. You can tell that Kaya is becoming frustrated, obviously considering this a serious matter and not happy with the lack of progress being made.

Today is Friday, and school has ended for the week.

Most of the students get into buses or cars to get home, but you take the sidewalk as you always do walking towards your apartment complex. Kaya walks by your side, not very talkative at the moment. You spot Lucy up ahead, walking by herself, and, glancing over your shoulder, you can see Bruce making his way home.

>A. Wait for Bruce

>B. Go catch up with Lucy

>C. Suggest to Kaya that the two of you begin investigating by yourselves

Saying goodbye to Kaya, you run after Lucy, catching up to her quickly.

You can see that she's still upset with you when her only response is a glance in your direction and a curt greeting. When she sees that you're not going to leave her alone, however, she does open up and talk.

"The whole school's been talking about you all week," she tells you, not looking at you while saying it. "They're all going on about how you came back from the dead, and how you're so tough that even Tim couldn't beat you when he had a gun."

She rolls her eyes. "It figures that you nearly getting yourself killed would just become a bit of gossip within a few days."

"I'm sorry for worrying you," you say, wanting her to stop being so upset with you.

Lucy stops, going still before finally turning to look at you. The expression on her face makes you think that she's about to hit you again, and you prepare yourself for pain.

"Every time you go to one of these stupid fights, I know you can get hurt," she says, her voice trembling. "I know you can get hurt badly. But, I never worried. You guys always beat each other up, but nobody brought weapons, and nobody ever died. I always thought it was so stupid. You're a smart guy, you could have done something else with your time, something productive. But, no, you and Bruce have to be a couple of idiots and go punch each other until you get concussions."

Her fists clench. "And now you got yourself shot. Not just shot, but killed. All because you couldn't find anything better to do than act like a little kid on the schoolyard. And let me guess, you have another fight planned for this weekend, don't you?"

>A. No

>B. No, you're done with these fights

"No," you answer. "Actually, I was hoping we could study together."

"Oh, you were, were you?" she asks, sounding a bit surprised but still somewhat angry. "Alright, I guess we never did get to do that last week. Besides, I guess you need to take advantage of any opportunity to use your brain."

She turns away from you again and begins walking away. "I'm going home to have dinner. Come by in an hour or so."

As Lucy walks away, you look back to see Bruce chatting with Kaya. As the two get closer, you can hear their conversation, and learn that they're talking about your work at the detective agency.

"So let me get this straight, they had him spend the day killing spiders?" he asks in disbelief. "Why not just call an exterminator?"

"Oh, I suppose it's just cheaper to have us do it," Kaya answers. "It's not all bad, they haven't called us in to work at all this week since then."

"Yeah, thought he'd be working more often," Bruce comments as the two reach you.

He chuckles at you. "And here I thought you were just slacking off from work."

"Kaya, we should meet sometime this weekend to talk about work," you tell the girl.

Kaya nods. "That sounds like a good idea. This case is certainly very important."

She looks over at Bruce. "Well, nice talking to you. I'll see you both later."

Kaya leaves the two of you behind, walking to wherever it is that she goes when she isn't in school (she hasn't told you where, probably just back to Spirit World). Bruce smirks knowingly as he turns to you.

"I see what you're doing," he says.

"Oh come on," Bruce replies. "I'm not THAT stupid. Wanting to meet up with her privately to talk about work? She just said you two haven't had any wok to do all week."

You think you see what he's getting at here.

"I don't blame you," he assures you. "She's good looking, and a lot more pleasant than Lucy. She hasn't tried to hit me once yet. And she hasn't been around long enough to know what a loser you are."

Bruce gives you a good-natured elbow, chuckling. "Tell me this. Is this the first "work meeting" you two have had? Were the other ones... productive?"

"Hahahaha, same old Bruce," you say, partly in amusement, and partly in irritation ad you put an arm around Bruce's neck. "But no."

"Oh, really?" he asks, pushing your arm away. "Then let's hear it."

"The detective work is a handful," you explain. "Most of the stuff I deal with at the agency is classified, so it's kinda hard to find a good place to discuss it at school or other public places."

"Right, bug squashing sounds really hush-hush," Bruce replies, rolling his eyes. "Whatever, man. I say go for it, but that's just me."

As Bruce talks, you notice somebody watching you from down the sidewalk. He looks like an old man, but something about him feels off. You're not sure what, but whatever it is, it makes your skin crawl.

The man sees you looking at him, and turns, slowly walking away. He doesn't seem to be worried about you seeing him. And, if you hurry, you're sure you can catch him.

"Anyway, apparently Allentown wants another fight," Bruce continues, not noticing how distracted you are. "Tomorrow night, same place. Are you coming?"

"Not this time," you tell him, excusing yourself and going back the way you came from.

"Hey, where are you going?" Bruce asks. "School just ended, remember?"

Ignoring your friend, you tail the old man, following him as he continues down the sidewalk. He doesn't look back as he walks, but you're pretty sure he knows that you're following him. Out of curiosity, you fish the Psychic Spyglass from your pocket, and use it on him.

There's nothing unusual in his clothes. In fact, he doesn't seem to be carrying anything with him. No wallet, no pocket change, nothing.

He seems to be leaving town, though you're not sure exactly where he's leading you.

You continue on at your current pace as he makes his way out of the town. Out of curiosity, you lock onto him with the compass, and find that he is indeed producing a signal.

This old man is apparently a demon. Possibly even the one who summoned Ishpa and who that giant spider creature was working for.

You cross the old field, following the man until he reaches the edge of the woods, at which point he turns around to look at you. He's about your height, with a full head of hair, albeit white hair. He looks kind of scrawny, but you get the feeling that he's plenty dangerous. He wears a yellow, striped sweater and khakis, his eyes are brown, and his lips are curled in a smile.

"Thank you for coming," he says cordially. "I was hoping that we'd have the chance to talk."

You feel as though you're being watched, and not just by him. Glancing over your shoulder, you see Bruce not too far behind you. The idiot followed you, though he at least has the sense to keep his distance for now.

But, you're pretty sure he's not the only one looking at you.

"I've been watching you," the old man says, causing you to return your attention to him. "So, you're Koenma's new Spirit Detective."

"Who are you?" you ask the man.

"My name is Arthur," he answers. "And it's so good to meet you, detective."

He raises his hands, and a pair of demons resembling Ishpa leap from the trees, landing at his sides.

"I'm sure you've guessed that I'm connected to the recent demonic activity," Arthur says. "But let me put any lingering questions to bed by assuring you that I'm the one who called the creatures you fought."

He lowers his hands as the two demons at his side growl lowly, bearing their teeth and preparing to strike.

"I was upset when you killed my dear Rachni," he continues, apparently referring to the spider creature. "But, now that I've done a little bit of listening, it makes sense. Spirit Detectives are quite dangerous, after all."

He smiles. "Of course, you could have simply been lucky. So, my pets here will test your strength while I'm here to watch."

Arthur snaps his fingers, and the two demons charge, howling as they rush towards you. One leaps into the air while the other remains on foot.

As the first demon descends, you leap back, avoiding a slash that certainly would have left you with some nasty cuts. As the demon lands, his clawed hand raking through the dirt, you step forward and kick him in the face, knocking him on his side as the other demon slashes horizontally.

You duck, rising and slamming your fist into his jaw with a powerful uppercut. The demon staggers back, and you rush forward, leaping over his fallen friend and slamming your foot into his nose, hearing a crunch as the demon falls backwards to the ground.

The first demon rises behind you, letting out a yell as he strikes, his claws cutting into your back and drawing a good deal of blood. You kick backwards, striking inside his thigh and causing his legs to buckle. Spinning, you elbow him in the cheek, and, once you finish your turn, kick him in the throat.

This time, neither demon rises.

Arthur smiles, giving you a nod of approval.

"Very good," he tells you. "Perhaps it wasn't just luck that allowed you to defeat Rachni. Of course, if you're thinking that you can defeat me, you're sadly mistaken. You have skill, detective, but your level of Spirit Energy doesn't even compare to my own. I'm afraid you have no chance of stopping me."

He turns away from you. "I'm sure we'll meet again, Detective. Perhaps then you'll be able to give me a challenge. Of course, if you plan to attack me here, now's the time to do it. You won't be able to find me in the woods if I don't want you to."

You're not just going to let this guy get away and do whatever it is that he's planning. You beat every demon he's thrown at you so far, and you're not afraid of him.

You raise your left hand, making a gun with your index finger and thumb. You choose to use the Concentration Ring in your attack, and take aim at Arthur's back. Your fingertip begins to glow with Spirit Energy.

Arthur remains completely still, not moving a single muscle as you gather your energy. You release it all in a concentrated blast, a blue light engulfing your vision and shooting towards Arthur. You hear the sounds of branches being ripped off of trees, and some of them beginning to burn. You fall to your knees in exhaustion.

Looking ahead, you see trees burning, and some fallen. But, you see no sign of Arthur. You lift your arm and stare at the compass, which indicates that he's right behind you. You look over your shoulder to see Arthur standing over you, staring down with an amused expression.

"That was quite an attack," he compliments. "Had it hit me, I could have been seriously hurt. Luckily for me, I move fast enough to avoid such a basic move. And unfortunately for you, it seems to have left you completely drained."

He calmly walks around you, then crouches in front of you. "In case it isn't yet clear to you how outmatched you are, I think I'll give you a little demonstration."

Grabbing you by the collar, Arthur effortlessly lifts you into the air with one hand. The next thing you know, he throws you nearly twenty feet, sending you crashing onto your back. He leaps, coming down and landing right on top of you, slamming his foot into your gut and making you spit blood.

Your head swims with the agony, and your vision becomes foggy for a few moments.

"I want you to listen very carefully," Arthur tells you. "Do I have your attention?"

"Go to hell," you answer.

"I'll take that as a yes," Arthur replies, reaching down and grabbing you by the collar again.

He pulls you to your feet and turns you around, showing you that Bruce is currently being restrained by two more of those low level demons like Ishpa.

"I had planned to capture one of your friends sooner or later," Arthur tells you. "The only problem was deciding between him and that Lucy girl. But, he was kind enough to come on his own and save me the trouble."

"What the hell are you things?!" Bruce shouts at his captors. "Let go of me before I put a hole in those Halloween costumes, and your head!"

"You see, Detective, I want a real fight," Arthur tells you. "As it stands now, you're just not strong enough to provide me with a challenge. When I kill Koenma's top man, I want it to be a real show. A way of showing him and his father just how far I've come."

He chuckles. "Understand this, Detective. My problem is not with you. You have your employer and his father to blame for your current predicament. Now, this is the important part, so listen closely."

He gives you a shove, and you fall face-first to the ground.

"I will allow you friend to keep living for one week," Arthur tells you. "You have until then to prepare yourself for our fight. That little gadget on your wrist should allow you to find me when you're ready. If you don't come by the time a week has passed, your friend will be killed. "

He steps away from you, and you hear the other two demons begin to drag Bruce away.

"Oh, and I wouldn't try to stop us from taking him if I were you," Arthur warns. "We don't want an accident to happen."

You hear Bruce continue to scream and yell before his voice fades. Lifting your head and looking around, you find that Arthur and his demons are gone.

You fish into your pocket, locating your communication mirror and opening it. A few moments later, Kaya's face appears on the screen, her expression telling you that she wasn't expecting you to call.

"What's up?" she asks in surprise.

"I need you to come get me," you tell her, taking a moment to find your voice with the pain you're in.

"What happened?" she demands. "Are you hurt? Are you still in danger?"

>A. You're okay, but you can't get home on your own. You'll explain everything when she gets here. You're in the old field.

>B. Explain everything and tell her that you need her help getting home. You're in the old field.

Rather not have Otherworld find out and have them screw up us saving Bruce if there is a bug inside that communication mirror
>>

"I'm okay," you assure her. "But I can't get home on my own."

"What happened?" she repeats, concern in her voice.

"I'll explain everything when you get here," you promise. "I'm in the old field."

Before Kaya can say another word, you close the mirror, letting your head rest on the ground as you wait for her to arrive. It only takes a few minute before Kaya swoops down, hopping off her oar and rushing over to you.

She crouches at your side, examining the cuts on your back. "These cuts are bad, but nothing too major."

She helps you to your feet, letting you lean against her. "It's exhaustion, isn't it? You used the Concentration Ring."

You tell her everything that happened, how you were lead out into this field, how the demon revealed himself and had his servants attack you. You recall the brief skirmish with the two weak demons, and how Arthur himself evaded your Spirit Gun. You tell her about the challenge he issues, and how he kidnapped your friend.

"This is troubling," Kaya says, helping you climb onto her oar. "I don't know how he identified you as a Spirit Detective, or what his vendetta is against Lord Koenma and King Enma."

The two of you lift into the air, and you hold onto Kaya tightly to keep from falling off the oar.

"I'll see if I can find anything from Spirit World about this Arthur creature," she informs you. "His name sounds Human, which I find rather odd, since the compass identified him as a demon."

Her tone tells you she has some ideas, but she doesn't seem like she's willing to share them at the moment. You don't know why Arthur hates Koenma either, or what he meant by "ascension", but you do know that he wasn't bluffing when he threatened to kill Bruce. You have only a week to catch up with him in strength, and find him. You doubt it will be so simply as walking into wherever it is that he's hiding, and kicking his ass. But, there's really nothing you can do now other than prepare yourself and train as hard as you can.

Studying with Lucy will have to wait.

>To be continued

That 's the end of this chapter. Next update will probably be Friday or Saturday. Follow me @qmdralo for schedule updates and changes, and head over to ask.fm/qmdralo to ask questions when I'm not running.

I'll answer some questions here for a little bit, too.
>>
>>40689106
How stupid was attacking Arthur?
>>
>>40689106
Would the same thing have happened if we used the normal spirit gun?

And have you seen the first chapter of DBSuper yet?
>>
>>40689106
fun thread SOM, thanks for running.
>>
>>40689150
Pretty stupid, but you guys couldn't know for sure if he was bluffing or not until you attacked.

>>40689152
You would have been no match for Arthur, even if you'd had the energy left to fight

And yes

>>40689159
Thanks for playing
>>
>>40689185
Will spirit power incs a little bit after we recover from using the Concentration ring?
>>
>>40689218
It's not Zenkai.
>>
>>40689235
Not talking about recovering from our injuries, talking about the fact we used all our spirit energy. Would it increase a bit after we recover all of it back since we used the spirit gun again?
>>
>>40689235
Are we a Super Human? Are we a Saiyan? What was Kazuma's last name in Human Quest?
>>
>>40689277
maybe by a small amount, nothing significant.

>>40689282
No. No. Hiei.
>>
>>40689311

>>40689451

Guru didn't manage to get a couple.
>>
>>40689451
demon ancestry confirmed, then?
>>
>>40689451
Will we meet up with old lady who sounds like Frieza? Can we punch her?
>>
So what do you guys think John looks like

I've been imaging him as brown skinned tall with dreadlocks tied into a ponytail
>>
>>40689514
Nope.

>>40689530
Probably not. Ha, good luck.
>>
>>40689656
Is Urameshi dead?
>>
>>40689656

>>
Why could Bruce see the demons?
>>
>>40689738
