Welcome to Academy City. The time is evening, the weather is tingly, and the date is January 10.

You are Kyril Torikov, Level 3 Telekinetic ‘superhero’ and you were in a fight with a liquid metal construct. It wasn’t much of a fight. Neither of you possessed the ability to land a decisive blow. The construct was doing more damage to your jacket with its whip-like appendages. Your fists fared no better. It was like trying to punch water, ineffective. The construct simply reformed itself. There had to be an Ability User nearby controlling it but you weren’t sure where to even begin to look for them. You were beginning to think you may have underestimated how big a target you had just made yourself.

Riko, Lupin IV to most everyone else, had been holding an auction. Your attendance was motivated for purely personal reasons. Literally crashing the auction was a happy coincidence. The item in question was a document whose name was shortened to DLC. The significance escaped you. Still it did its job. Already there had been two attempts on your life this evening alone. The current situation was a classic stalemate. You already had one suspect down and out. Short of asking for Kyouko’s help, there wasn’t much point in continuing this any further. Your fights were entertaining her. Of course if you didn’t try to deal with this now it’ll probably track you down and murder you in your sleep. It was a chain of deals type thing to get rid of CADME’s hijacking of your brain whenever you used it.

Your barrier strength was flickering in the low teens. Given the volume of blows coming your way you had to use your arms even more to mitigate the worst of them.

“Hey Kyouko can you do me a favour?”

“What’s the matter Pops? Can’t handle it?” she shot back with good cheer.

“Not really but this isn’t going anywhere,” you ducked under a blow, “I’ll die of old age before this thing ends. If you could find whoever’s controlling this thing I’ll get you a cake or something.”

“Or something right?” she pouted and whined, “Sounds good ta me.”

The exchange with Kyouko had distracted you. By the time you acknowledged her reply a whip of liquid metal nearly took your head off. You had left your neck unguarded. Just as it was about to bite in to your neck, the figure disappeared. The warehouse had been replaced by a formless dark. It was like that time you had visited Kyouko late at night. Whatever it was it was definitely proof of her existence as a Code M.

“AAAaaaaaaaaah-Oof.”

It seems the liquid metal puppet’s controller was pulled in with you. The girl was dressed in a nurse’s outfit. Her hair was dark and her eyes were wide in fear and confusion.

“I found her on the roof,” Kyouko’s voice boomed, “Why didn’t you bring down the roof Pops?”

“Hey I just wanted to know where she was, not my fault you did more than I asked.”

A snort was her reply. Turning your gaze back to the girl in question, you already had a few ideas of why she was here and who she worked for. The City probably wanted the document back and she had drawn the short straw. It wasn’t like you were at cross-purposes here though so you were going to,

“Your name,” you demanded through the mask.

“I’m not telling you anything VERDICT,” she hissed.

She didn’t quite appreciate the situation she was in just yet, you thought. Stalking closer earned you a knife in the stomach. It broke itself against your barrier. You tilted your head as if asking if she had more. Dejectedly she dropped the ballistic knife in her other hand.

“Your name,” you repeated.

“Kouzaku Mitori.”

“Ooh, ooh, call her Mii-chan.”

Kouzaku glared above and around her. You lifted Kouzaku off the ground, roughly getting her to her feet.

“Hey don’t look so down. Pops ain’t gonna hurt ya,” Kyouko was unknowingly helping you out, “Much.”

“You’re lucky I bigger fish to fry,” you spoke, “Go back to your masters and tell them that I have no interest in whatever Lupin stole from them. Do you understand?”

She nodded. In her head she probably understood that you were using it as bait. If she made the wrong assumptions then that was on her.

“Don’t come after me again,” you finished, “Alright I’m done here.”

“Right, way out is behind you, turn around and keep walking.”

Kyouko probably wasn’t done. It wasn’t really your problem at this point so you ignored Kouzaku and walked away. Back in the warehouse, you found had the masked man gone, so was the cassette player. Oh well, there were more opportunities after this.

The time is now near lunch, the weather is fine, and the date is now January 11.

With business still unfinished, you had people to go see. In fact, it seemed like you were rather popular today. You had two messages. One was from Last Order saying that you mother wanted you over for lunch. The other was from Asuka, also an invitation to lunch with her friends. It wasn’t like you could put off seeing Sagara or Nayuta for more clues.

You had declined Asuka’s invitation. The reason for that was because you had no idea what you were going to go as. Her friends had a vague idea of what you looked like so it wasn’t like you could go in disguise. Going as VERDICT was even more suspicious given that you were trying to separate the two personas. With a promise to talk to her later after classes, you went to see Last Order.

“Onii-san, onii-san, Misaka heard onii-san got something nice from Riko-nee-san says Misaka says Misaka as she hopes to be able to play with her new toy.”

“It’s nothing dangerous I hope,” your mother chimed in.

“There’s already been two attempts on my life,” you answered honestly.

Mom almost dropped the pot of stew.

“Oooh, Misaka loves dangerous toys, says Misaka says Misaka as her curiosity doubles.”

“You’re not keeping it I hope.”

Now your mother was frowning.

“Of course not, I just need to look like I’m in possession of it.”

“So onii-san doesn’t actually have it says Misaka says Misaka disappointedly.”

You shook her head and Last Order frowned.

“It’s something the City was going to kill me over,” you explained.

At that your mother’s expression did a 180.

“We could make use of it then,” she suggested, “as insurance. I don’t trust the City, not after what they did to you. Of course we would need to find out how much it was really worth. Mishka can you find out more.”

“Yes mum, says Misaka says Misaka as she eagerly sets to her task.”

You served yourself a bowl of goulash. Mom and Last Order moved to the couch in the living room. From the dinner table you could make out vague search queries and other such techno-wizardry. The stew was okay with rice.

“Ah-hah says Misaka says Misaka as she exclaims in excitement. Riko-nee-san thought she was being clever. Little did she know that Misaka too plays Defense of the Ancients.”

“The name might not even matter,” you pointed out as you served yourself seconds.

“Still I think it is worth having.”

“Whatever it is, I’m not going to risk my life, or yours, just because it may be a good idea to.”

“Perhaps you are right Kyril,” your mother sighed.

Returning to the table, the two started eating.

“By the way, I don’t actually have to hide my face all the time now,” you informed, “Just only at work.”

Of course you had arrived in your civvies. The lack of surprise meant they probably already know. Given Last Order’s expression you were pretty sure she did. Come to think of it,

“You told Asuka didn’t you.”

“Yes, Kudou-sama wished to in her words, ‘mix pleasure with business,’ says Misaka says Misaka as she confesses truthfully.”

“I’m not mad just curious.”

“You came to have lunch with us instead of her?” your mother asked.

You nodded. She gave you a dark look, as if wondering what the hell you were doing here.

“What? She has classes later and I was going to see her afterwards anyway.”

Her expression softened somewhat but you weren’t sure what she was really upset about.

The time is afternoon, the weather is cool, and the date remains unchanged.

“And that’s what I told her,” you finished.

Asuka looked amused as ever. You didn’t know why. The two of you were strolling in one of the malls. Neither of you had any particular need to buy anything but you supposed window shopping for new outfits was nice. At least you had the good sense to reject the green bandana with “Grove St.” embroidered on it that Last Order had insisted you wear. You had been relating your lunch with family to your girlfriend as you walked.

“I’m not laughing at you dear,” she lied, “But then again she is at the age to dress-up dolls and such. Perhaps I should do the same.”

“Please don’t.”

“Oh, but I do insist dear.”

She dragged you in to a nearby store. They clerks didn’t need to be hypnotised to submit to Asuka’s whims.

Asuka stood on her tiptoes to brush your hair this way or that with her fingers. Your hair had to match the outfit apparently. You tried to ignore the clerks giggling.

“Speaking of which, I heard you were chasing a killer that was after dear old Riko.”

“You want in,” you cut to the heart of the matter.

The serious utterance lacked the proper gravitas given the green skirt you were wearing.

“That goes without saying.”

“Sure if get this damn skirt off of me.”

“It’s a kilt dear,” Asuka sighed.

It was still a skirt in your eyes. Ignoring the fact that Asuka was already ringing up her purchases for you, skirt included, you pondered your next destination. She wasn’t worried about curfew, not when she was in your company anyway. Your remaining lead was then the animal mask gang that was apparently a thing. There were three people you could go see to find out more. Sagara probably had dirt on them. Kyouko too, she made it an important thing to know what went on in the Tenth. Then there was Nayuta and the City’s resources, if not the best source of information.

“Who are we going to see?”

Asuka’s question brought you out of your thoughts. The two of you were walking outside now. Apparently your feet were already leading you towards Nayuta.

“My boss,” you looked down, “and what did I say about the skirt?”

“Leave the kilt alone dear.”

You didn’t want to. It looked ridiculous, given the green, yellow, and red pattern. At least it wasn’t pleated. A beret had also replaced your cap. Still you made no move to protest further. Then your eyes narrowed. VERDICT threw a warning in to your consciousness, “Mental Interference Detected.”

“That’s just unfair,” you pointed out.

“The benefits of being an Ability User,” she pointed.

“You don’t see me flipping skirts without a care.”

“Because you won’t,” she continued without missing a beat.

“Mental interference detected,” you voiced, “That’s not a very helpful feature.”

“It makes you even more endearing.”

Nayuta wasn’t surprised to see Asuka hanging off your arm. In fact she was more curious about the item you had acquired from Lupin. Why was everyone going on about that?

“Because it relates to the Power Curriculum Program,” Nayuta replied, “And that’s all I’m allowed to tell you. The City would appreciate it if you returned as soon as possible.”

“I’m not planning on keeping it in the first place.”

“A wise move,” Asuka agreed, “Not that it was relevant.”

“Why does it feel like you need to let off some steam?”

“Because I do.”

You turned to Nayuta imploringly, even removing your glasses to show the tear you managed to squeeze out.

“Alright I get it nii-chan,” she sighed, “The gang, if we could call it one doesn’t really have a name, but it does have a leader. They’re based in and around School District 10. Twelve banks have been hit so far, probably for the protection money.”

“Obviously,” Asuka tapped her foot.

“But they’ve started getting bolder. They’re hitting labs and universities now. Prototype technologies and certain chemicals have been stolen.”

[1/2]
>>
>>40703864
“So you don’t actually know where they are?”

“That’s right nii-chan. We’d have more information but we haven’t been able to arrest any so far,” Nayuta smiled brightly at you, “If only we could properly catch them red-handed. That our hands are tied in School District 10, the Slumlord had come to an agreement with the City after all. What we need is a civil-minded free agent.”

You tried not to turn away as you replied with a straight face,

There was no need to go looking around fruitlessly in School District 10 if they were going to keep stealing things outside of the district. Waiting wasn’t exactly comfortable though. Thankfully Asuka was there to provide suitable distractions.

“Amateurish,” she remarked.

She sat on your lap as she went through the various banks they had hit. You didn’t know whether it was the fact that they simply slaughtered their way through the whole thing, or the fact that Anti-Skill weren’t able to catch them despite this, let alone Judgement.

“It’s worked for them so far,” Nayuta added.

“I’m not arguing their results but this insults me on a professional level. What point is there in cutting down those who can’t fight back?”

Nayuta turned to you,

“And what about you nii-chan.”

“Didn’t you read my file?”

“Sure I know all about the citywide satellite hack and the ACRE altercation, what about them?”

You didn’t answer verbally. Instead you spared a glance at Asuka before smiling smugly at your boss. Nayuta didn’t look pleased at your answer.

“You still got caught,” she finally said, “And that means they can get caught too.”

There was a beep on one of her computers.

“There we go.”

There was a report of a break in at university next to Nagatenjouki Academy. Apparently the culprits had taken hostages and barricaded the server room. It was a good old siege situation. You suited up.

“Remember nii-chan, try not to get everyone killed.”

Asuka raised her eyebrow at that. You shook your head in response. By the time you had arrived Anti-Skill were beginning to set up. Around the blockade you could see a few bodies being hauled out. Anti-Skill so far had been content with negotiating for the release of the hostages. Maybe you could use this to your advantage by,

“This is demeaning,” Asuka stated.

“It’s only for a little while,” you soothed.

“They must have been exchanging platitudes for a good twenty minutes now,” she pointed out.

You hadn’t just found cardboard boxes you had also found a hand cart to go with them. They were big enough to fit both you and Asuka inside them. Currently, Asuka was sitting in of the boxes as you wheeled the cart closer. The plan was to hide if you came across anyone, with Asuka ducking in to her box and you ducking in to yours. You’ve only had to do it once to make sure you weren’t detected. It wasn’t your fault her box was also full of foam packaging bits that clung to her hair. You were wheeling Her Grace towards the server room. Apparently the thieves were negotiating with one of the terminals with video conferencing.

“This is about the kilt is it not?” she continued.

“Whatever gave you that idea?” you remarked.

“Who’s there?”

Whoops, looks like the two of you were a bit too loud. You quickly ducked under your box. Asuka too dove in to hers. From the narrow slit in the cardboard, you could make out the figure as they rounded the corner. He was wearing a pig mask. So this one didn’t have the cassette player? The one that was patrolling another corridor didn’t utter a sound as he passed. You supposed the noise had Piggy spooked. Still you were pretty close to server room. If you couldn’t silence him quietly then things were going to get complicated.

“Silence,” you breathed.

Piggy didn’t even have a chance to question it before Asuka rose up and struck him cleanly with the flat of the Dean. You secured him as Asuka looked around the corner.

“The way is clear now.”

“Good, we’ll cut through the adjacent wall, you up for it?”

“Of course.”

Piggy was stuffed in to the now unused boxes as best as possible. You did final checks on your ammunition before following Asuka in to the room.

“I hereby swear that I forbid the existence of something which I cannot cut!”

Aside from the proclamation, the work was done quickly and quietly. You backed away sufficiently to get a good running start. With your pistol in one hand, you barged through the wall in a spray of concrete dust, startling whoever was inside. You tagged three immediate hostiles, a dog mask, a cat mask, and a familiar chicken mask. There was another by the terminal talking with Anti-Skill and was thus no in position to react. A double tap took care of Dogface before he could even react. It took another four rounds to put down Kitty but Cockhead managed to return fire as you drilled your last shot in to his abdomen. Even with a personal shield, you ducked behind a rack of servers to reload. No point in being sloppy now. There you found another mask waiting to the side. He raised his shotgun.

The wall exploded beside, throwing off his aim as Asuka emerged. A quick downwards stroke and she moved on, not even bothering to confirm her kill. It was a kill alright. Stepping over the headless corpse, you registered screaming and gunfire ahead. Asuka had run another one through and was in the process of turning around. Exposed as she was, it seemed the last one hadn’t shot her yet.

“Stay back.”

His mask was a rabbit. In his arms was a hostage though he was alternating his aim between you and Asuka.

Asuka had started advancing on him. The Dean was still slick with blood, dripping on the floor as the other hostages looked at her hopefully. You raised an arm, barring her way. She frowned by stopped.

“That’s right, stay back.”

You brought your arm forward. With a thought your limiter was disengaged. It looked like your arm was about to fall but you managed to hold it up regardless. Bunnyboy had his pistol trained on you now. You were obviously the more immediate threat. If he wanted to shoot then he didn’t do it fast enough. The gun and his hand were crushed. In that small moment it took you to visualise the result, metal and flesh were compressed down to the size of a ping pong ball. Just as quickly as it happened, it was over. Blood burst from his mangled hand as he screamed. You turned to Asuka,

“Can you shut him up?”

“In a moment, I am enjoying this.”

Shrugging, you moved to the terminal where the Anti-Skill officer was shouting through.

“Hostages secured,” you reported.

“VERDICT?”

You turned away to check on the hostages. It was probably the first thing you should have done but it looked they were all in good health, if a bit shell-shocked.

“And so, the score is four for me, and three and a half for you,” Asuka finally spoke.

You did some mental calculations,

“Wait, four? You got three of them tops. Where does my half even come from?”

“Knocking out an opponent is much harder than it looks, it counts for two, as for the half,” she pointed at Fowlface, “He is still alive, perhaps not long, but still alive.”

Poultryprick was desperately clawing at his wound in silence.

“That doesn’t make sense at all.”

“Still it may be wise to think up questions you wished to ask these gentlemen before Anti-Skill arrive.”

You left to fetch Piggy while Asuka prepared to interrogate Gallusgoon. Of course when you returned, he was unmasked and no longer in the land of the living.

“His tongue had been removed, his vocal chords severed,” Asuka explained, “He was worthless to us so I made sure his passing was quick.”

You refrained from commenting instead and dropped Piggy roughly on the ground. A few slaps to the face and he was lucid once again.

“Oh fuck.”

Beneath the mask you smiled.

“Tell me everything about your boss, why does he want what I have?”

“And I would like to know why he would make a mute out of his subordinate,” Asuka added, “Tell us the truth.”

“He, he’s, he’s, I don’t know anything, only Chicken knew. They’re his lieutenants, they don’t speak, he just gives them a tape and that’s it, I swear.”

“What were you hoping to steal here?”

“I don’t know, classified data maybe. The boss, he promised if we could get it then we’d be the next Level 5s in the City. We’ll live like kings.”

“What about the classified data I have?”

“It’s the same. We could do the same thing with the Parameter List.”

You looked at Asuka. She had about as much of an idea as you did. Your last question was the location of their safe houses and hideouts. At least you managed to get something out of this fiasco.
Episode End.
