Have you ever dealt with slavery or indentured servitude in your games?
>>
>>40745299
My DM allowed us to sell one of our more annoying players to a group of traveling slavers. It was funny, because he'd insist on rolling to break the chains, and would fail (bonus; the slavers would beat him whenever they caught him trying to escape, which was all the fucking time).
>>
Yes. Magical not!Africa is chock-full of slavery, especially by the dwarves, of the humans and orcs. The wizards of the capital of the area my players are in currently bought tons of them, but they're letting the slaves pay for themselves for with their work and treating them as well as you would a paid labourer. Most of the former slaves are heading south into the White Coast where life is shit anyway, though.
>>
Yes, once did run a campaign where the players ran a slave trader company.
>>
I don't generally run or play games in which slavery is likely to be present, or even be a theme.

If you stay away from post-apocalypse or non-anime fantasy, you probably won't see it.
>>
>>40745299
Darksun campaign, the entire party was enslaved to one of the Defiler dragons (the one with the fighter levels), working in his mines. One of the players decided to stop showing up so the DM put his female Elf character into a coma. Our water cleric/rogue douchelord pimped out the character to other slaves for water. When the guy finally showed again, he was really pissed that his dainty Elf had been used as a cumdump by over half the slave gang and the rest of the party was so water-wealthy we'd bought our freedom with it, leaving her behind.
>>
>>40745644
>If you stay away from non-anime fantasy

But I want it to be good.
>>
Anytime my group encounters slaves they free them. Anytime they encounter slavers or slave owners they kill them or free their slaves. They leave no opening to approach the issue of slavery from a historical context, which is unfortunate because there is a campaign which I would like to run featuring piracy, plantations, and international trade and finance.
>>
Isn't it pretty common in non-D&D fantasy?

Yes. In Eclipse Phase and the 40k rpgs, indentured servitude is the norm of the setting.
>>
>>40745743
It should be common in any setting based on most of history. Even in a modern setting it occurs in most countries, secretly or not.

Yes. Any setting. They still do it.
>>
Back when I had a Dark Heresy group I had a short side session where the Inquisitor flat out sent them to capture slaves and even allow them to keep one. I did it to measure how immersed my players were in the game. I figured if they were reluctant then they would refuse or try to sabotage things. Alas, they went along without hesitation. Put me off of GMing a bit.
>>
>>40745716
>>40745844
>They do this in any setting? That is pretty idiotic.

You're underestimating just how ingrained white guilt is, or how hard people have been told that slavery is pretty much the worst thing you could possibly do short of genocide.

People think slaver and they think an angry ugly white guy whipping a poor colored person until their backs are raw, people completely forget about Roman slavery, peasants and serfs, indentured servitude or the entire slave trade going on in the Arab world.

The entirety of slavery's history is the American Deep South, from approximately 1850 to 1865.
>>
>>40745875
Just play a historical game and make it clear what will happen if they act so out of character for the world.

Either they will learn to actually roleplay or they all get killed.
>>
>>40745930

In all fairness most Americans believe this. It's a major factor in our politics.

>>40745940

Doesn't sound fun. Seems rail-roadey, and they'd assume that the adventure is playing John Brown and freeing the slaves as a campaign.
>>
>>40745930
Well just don't play with anybody stupid enough to suffer from white guilt or to think that is what slavery is.
>>
>>40745844
>It should be common in any setting based on most of history.

Yeah, but it tends to be less common in D&D style fantasy due to that whole alignment thing. Non-evil societies don't do that shit in the vast majority of D&D settings.
>>
>>40745299
That one crouching looks a lot like Arya stark from the show
>>
>>40745716
Why don't you just have them walk into a city and have a slave auction going on in a town square. Or have guards go after them for murdering innocent men going about their businesses. If it's a norm in a setting they should get fucked up for trying to intervene.
>>
>>40746000
>Non-evil societies don't do that shit in the vast majority of D&D settings.

Ironically, Qadira and Osirion practice slavery yet they worship Sarenrae, who is a Neutral Good Goddess that supports slavery.
>>
>>40745916
Why? It proved that they could keep immersed pretty well.
>>
>>40745973
Its not rail-roadey, its called having realistic consequences.

If someone's first reaction to the Roman Republic is to start murdering every single citizen they see then they will end up dead pretty quickly.

I have a thing for the classic "Slave Girl", and since I don't like exposing others to autistic fetishism, I don't think I'd be able to play through a slavery focused game without bringing that up, so I wouldn't for the sake of normalcy.
>>
>>40745299
The main kingdom the players always start in in my custom world uses slavery to the state as a form of punishment for several crimes.
For the absolute worst this punishment often extends beyond death, as they are raised as minor undead to server as swarm troops/cannon fodder.
>>
>>40746041
>>40746067

My party finds a way to destroy cities right and left. I wouldn't count on them not fucking the whole place up thanks to ridiculously stupid dice results.
>>
>>40746071
>I don't think I'd be able to play through a slavery focused game without bringing that up, so I wouldn't for the sake of normalcy.

Anon, if you're playing a slavery focused game then people will be EXPECTING the classic slave girl, so really it would actually be encouraged to go to market and find yourself a girl.

One of the few fetishes you can play without people realizing it's a fetish (unless you make it REALLY obvious,) like savage girls or pregnancy.
>>
>>40746171

Does pregnancy even count as a fetish? After all, it is very common. Most women do it at least once.
>>
Come to think of it, what's up with the "enslaved elves" thing that keeps popping up? Is it because GMs and players like seeing the snooty knife-ears humbled?
>>
>>40746224
>Come to think of it, what's up with the "enslaved elves" thing that keeps popping up?

It's a meme.
>>
>>40746122
However many adventurers should not be able to take on an entire city guard and however many actual soldiers during their first encounter with slavery within the city then. Introduce it early.

Or you could just explain before hand that the setting will have slavery as common place and that's normal and they shouldn't waste their time because you don't have any story for it in the campaign.
>>
>>40746061
Yeah but most of them started off as moral characters trying to do good and I wanted to ease them into the mind frame of 'ends justify the means' but then they just went whatever at this whole kidnap people for slavery and it felt off.
>>
>>40746071
Oh boo hoo, who cares if something sexy comes up in a campaign? Look how popular game of thrones is and that's full of GRRM's fetishes, you can feel them dripping off the pages. Just don't go into to much detail. A good way to understand the cultures you've built is to give the players a snapshot of what they think about sex.
>>
>>40746223

It fits as a fetish in the broad definition of fetish being "something that turns you on and you want more of it."

At the same time, it's less the pregnancy and more the act of impregnation, both of which don't actually come up too often in games and thus technically counts as a fetish.
>>
>>40746237

My party is pretty far left anon. They've fought against trickledown economics when entering a shipping town before.

>>40746224

Elves are a great target for slavers. Not likely to lose value over time, from a race exotic enough to be high priced, decent looking, hated enough to be raided by drow, orcs, and goblinoids (most settings primary slavers), and haughty enough that most people like seeing them brought down a peg.

Also pretty enough for fetishizing.

Your group sounds terrible.

Anybody who forces their modern political views into the game regardless of context or setting is a shitty player.

Also I do not get people who think slavery in a game means it must be fought. Its like those people who think including medieval gender roles in a medieval setting either means you hate women or the game is about introducing feminism.
>>
>>40746393
I actually like how Breeding Season did. Elves let themselves become slaves because otherwise it's all just monotonous and having the arduous work or kinky slave sex to distract them keeps them sane and happy
>>
>>40746400

Because they mostly enter small towns and have stupid luck with the dice. Also they travel far enough to outrun the consequences of their actions in most settings.

But lots of "good" people in 40k use slaves. It's really common. As a matter of fact, if you get to live as a slave in 40k you're already ahead of the curve just by being alive. It seems to me like your party was just a step ahead of you in preparation for how the setting works. Not a bad problem to have if you ask me.

No. Certain goods are not easily mass produced by low level magic users making skilled labor a valuable investment, and the service sector is either untouched by magic or merely enhanced by it. High level magic users have better shit to do than make money.

>>
>>40746439
>Because they mostly enter small towns and have stupid luck with the dice.

You're not going to run into the worst varieties of slavery, or the worst types of slavers, in pleasant small towns.

Have the party run across a well-kept slave and the only indication they're a slave is maybe them namedropping their master once or twice.

Once you normalize slavery and show it's an acceptable part of every day life, they will either roll with it or die trying.
>>
>>40746524
Or just make the BBEG the logical extreme of their anachronistic and socially destructive actions. Either they realise how stupid they are being or they have to work with the monster who tortures innocent citizens to death and uses their slaves as cannon fodder for his empire building.
>>

Didn't Tarantino do this with the "good guys" in Inglourious Basterds and everyone still loved 'em?
>>

Most states at the time had the legal right to secede. It was done for the wrong reason and it's good the South lost in the end but secession was allowed.

Personally I'd rather them fly this flag.
>>
>>40749038

There were only two legal paths to succession through the constitution. The Confederate States followed neither of them. Their succession was as unlawful as it was unwise: the landed aristocracy could have stayed slave owning for a few decades more before slavery was phased out by the rest of the Union at the Federal level while divesting their investments (60% at the time for most) from slaves into things like factories, finance, shipping, and other ventures. They opted instead to try and protect their investments by seceding, which fucked them.

I'm interested is running a game that has a focus on slavery, but am unsure how I should go about it.

First off, I'm split over whether to set it in a medieval fantasy world or in a science-fantasy setting I made. The first would be more easily recognized, but the second has advantages like many races and worlds to travel to.

Second, how exactly is slavery a major issue? The simplest way would be to have the main characters be slavers themselves, but I'm hesitant to force that onto them. I'd also rather not have the whole group be slaves. One possibility is for some characters to be slaves of others, but that of course would require a good group.

As far as erotic content goes, I'm usually fine with it as long as it isn't the main focus of the game and everyone handles it relatively maturely.

Any suggestions are welcome, and if you have more questions don't hesitate to ask.
>>
>>40749546

I'd go with this idea: with regards to slavery make it the cornerstone of everything. Banker or stock trader? Dealings are often underpinned on slave contracts or with slavery clauses as collateral on loans. Debt is built like a house of cards on the slave market, and catastrophes happen whenever there is a mass default and the slave markets are flooded, resulting in the prices plummeting ala the housing crisis.

Maybe the characters are involved in other lines of work even if they aren't necessarily slavers, but since times are tight due to the economic collapse in that sector or area of the kingdom the only work to be found is guarding missions to export the cheap slaves to areas where slaves are more expensive, kicking off the adventure and bringing people who wouldn't normally make common cause with slavers into the world of slavery.
>>

Also I might be down to play if it's online. What sort of focus is the narrative on?

It became outdated in economic terms for uses around the 1880s, at lest that is what my professor told me in college. However for some time afterwords a couple of types of farming work (namely rubber ) still had better returns on slavery then trained payed workers with machines.

I've decided on using the science fantasy setting, and I really want to let the players explore the strange cultures and planets that appear. Many of these do practice slavery to different extends. Even the 'good guy' nations have house slaves. As far as overarching plots go, I'm drawing a blank.

The SC flag is a palm tree. You mean the West Virginia Battle Flag, which also flies over the state house. Why shouldn't they fly it? It reminds us of one of the bloodiest wars of the 19th century. And it was the side they were on. Different things have different meanings to different people. Besides, what would taking it down accomplish? What about the stars and stripes? Cant that too be viewed as a flag of slavery?
>>
>>40747720

I still say South Carolina should change it cause that's a crappy flag. Either keep the crescent or the tree, not both.

Exalted (1st edition I think?) had a real good book on this.

Manacle and Coin I believe it was called.

People might think it was a Middle Eastern or North African flag if they did that.

Yeah, I had a agricultural civilization that used giants to till the land in one of my worlds. They were hunchbacked with traits very similar to elephants, but without the trunks and big ears. The tusks of slaves were often cut off for ivory decorations.

My first impression of slavery nowadays is 20 something year old haji's raping teenage girls.

From what history I've read ISIL's concept of slavery isn't in line with what it was common in the Ottoman and other Arab/Persian empires.

Had this in a setting. Merchant house was basically ran by a lone Elf who was an infamous elven commando commander known for her brutality and torturing human peasants. Gets captured and enslaved, out of bureaucracy, no one IDs her and she is sold as a maid/laborer to a low class merchant who's trying to start a business. She seduces the merchants son the second he hits puberty, and through the son's suggestions and her connections in the elven resistance, ensures the business takes off and is successful by planning raids on rival business and noble houses. Has the father assassinated and puts son in charge. Her young master ends up ennobled and the bastard kids she has with the son take over key positions in the business and other rivals to feed her info. Gets her master in the line for kingship, married to the princess, but the princess surprisingly can't have kids, so the new prince's bastard half-elf son is legitimized.

PC's were tasked with figuring out the whole legitimization fiasco and uncovering the Slave terrorist past.

Sort of a brutal, dark Star Wars game had us needing to buy crewmebers for a ship from a slaver.

Droids were way too expensive and there was nobody to hire at any price to ride the massive pile of rust and steel they were flying.

The noble got a hard reality check, in the form of being told that they couldn't just free the slaves right away or treat them right: A lot of slaves are vicious survivors that would jump on any sign of weakness to kill them and steal the ship. They needed to keep a tight leash on them and control them like real slavers.

It worked out in the end, but the slave market scene really played up how sleazy and wrong buying and selling humans is. It was like the darkest moment of getting a few day laborers in front of a Home Depo ever.

Yep. The setting started as a bit of an experiment; I turned up the usual traits of the standard fantasy races (excepting humans) and tried to figure out how they would interact. Elves because elitist conquerors and contemptuous masters, each proud and individualistic. Dorfs turned into first the Ancient Greeks and then Romans (dorf physique is rather ideally suited to both hoplite phalanx and Roman legion tactics, oddly enough). Both elves and dwarfs have human slaves. Elf slavery is closest to Southern US slavery; the elves believe themselves to be demigods, so mere, pitiful mortals like humans are less than nothing in their society. They are used for all menial and laborious tasks and serve as servants as well. Their lives tend to be harsh and short.
At the very least, however, the elves don't purposefully torture or act cruelly towards them. Doing so would be "beneath" them,

Dorfs follow a more Roman model (fancy that). Their slavery is conquest based: if an enemy (typically humans) does not submit or become a subservient ally and gets conquered, the get enslaved. Their slaves are 3rd/4th class people with few rights, but are often given the chance to buy their freedom. It's hereditary, but children are cheaper to free.
The exception is for criminals and rebels, who are enslaved for life in punishing conditions (such as mines). Some dwarfs end up suffering this fate as well.
Free or freed humans are still secondary in dwarf society, being barred from office and so forth, but can own property and serve in auxiliary roles in the army.

Excuse me, but what? West Virginia seceded fr Virginia Proper and joined the Union during the Civil War. They fly it as a reminder that they were born in battle. Fuck I hate people who don't know history but talk like they do.
>>
My druid came across this magitech society where these elementally attuned sprites were used as domestic animals, despite being sentient. The king, despite being a dragon, was unable to stamp out the practice. When she helped SAVE THE WORLD FROM A DEMON INVASION, she couldn't convince everyone to quit that shit, but she was able to collect enough like-minded and grateful souls to make sure no one who upheld that peculiar institution was able to show their face in public.

I'm not an expert on antebellum slavery in the South, but I was under the impression they treated their slaves relatively well to ensure they would remain as productive as can be because slaves would cost them so much.

Yes.

>>40760001
I should have said that it's like the WOST of US slavery. There were many who believed they were 'helping' the slaves by giving them Christianity and a purpose, but there were plenty of horrible masters as well.
My elves aren't typically like the LaLaurie family, fortunately for their slaves.

Keep in mind that in DnD (common example) magic is not all that common. Outside of adventuring groups, a city may have a single resident wizard maxing out around level 3. The town cleric may also know some magic, but otherwise you won't see much of it.

Magic items are also very expensive, running from hundreds to thousands of gold and your average land owner probably operates primarily with silver. Humanoid labor is a hell of a lot easier to obtain and maintain than magic unless the setting uses Harry Potter magic.

Prince was forced to step down, divorce the princess and the nation ripped itself apart in civil war. said prince packed up and bounced to another big nation because the nobles didn't like a commoner among their ranks. Elf slave escaped to a elven nation and is the spymaster there and is a recurring villain we call the 'slave-queen' in the current campaign. Before she bounced, she ordered her surviving children to marry into noble families in other nations to increase her influence in the following generations through the link of her bloodline. Party is currently trying to keep her from getting some powerful old magic and wiping out the Civil War survivors to expand her nation onto the land.

she also formally married her old master, so the party can't do anything about her in that nation, because she hasn't done anything illegal there. The guy also holds the party responsible for the previous country falling apart. Trying to figure a way to keep him involved yet seem a victim of circumstance.
>>
>>40745299
Yes, that's actually how the party formed in game, in my setting there is an empire that gathers people of complimenting skill sets from the ranks of the enslaved to form adventuring parts, after 10 years of service not only are they freed they are given full citizenship in the empire, this is the easiest way to get citizenship to the empire of immortals (in there citizenship = immortality)

Lots of Kings were making more and more crimes receive enslavement as a punishment so they could get guns and other goods from Arab and Portuguese slave traders.

And that is another thing, people do not realise Arabs were taking Africans as slaves for centuries before Europeans and did not fully stop until the early 1900's.
>>
>>40763553

You can still buy slaves, even in countries like Algeria. Of course, they're not slaves, they're "housemaids", but, you know, not much difference in the end.

But Arabs are PoC and were oppressed by my ancestors, which lets me excuse their actions.
>>
>>40764475
>oppressed

I know you are kidding but people forget Arabs/Turks/whatever were an existential threat to Europe for nearly 1000 years.

And the only reason we do not have tons of Europeans descended from former slaves in the Middle East and North Africa is that they quite frequently castrated their slaves.

My PC in Rogue Trader comes from an ork tribe that regularly raids Imperial, Eldar, and Tau worlds for slaves to use as a huge labor force in a series of mines on their planet. The boss keeps his own harem of the strongest females (ie. Yup. The rolls were hilariously bad.

> how mutual is the feeling of those two by now?

He's still smitten by her, but now has his doubts. She forced a priest to bond his soul to hers, making them basically soulmates and prolonging his life as a "I'm sorry, I won't hurt you again" thing. PC's can't kill her without killing him and hurting the local economy. They did overhear him talking to his son (they can feel where each other is at, pass basic messages, and feel the others emotions) after some diplomatic missions, allowing to start the current campaign.

She basically raised him to be her manipulable husband, but she kinda has some affection in him, like a well kept pet. The soul-binding will roll was a bit low, so she's starting to actually love him subconsciously, and its causing him to want to help her despite her goals. She does consider her grandchildren onwards to be disposable to her plans. as soon as her own children die, she'll start "using" some of the more expendable descendents.

>What changed along those years?

Japan only changed its flag in 1999, and that change was too small to even be visible without a tape measure. The flag you're probably thinking about was a war flag and the reason it's not used (commonly) anymore is that Japan isn't at war, not because of a flag change.

And Germany changed back to the 1848 German Confederation flag. If anything, the Nazi flag was a brief historical aberration.

Well, the first couple of sessions we had was me and another fellow going around raiding farming villages and taking captives. We stopped just short of 600~ after a while. Don't really need more after that. The fortress repairs are pretty much done at this point in time and my allies don't agree with my ideas for defenses. I just want ditches and a dry moat filled with the bodies of dead slaves. And pitfalls everywhere. Is that too much to ask?
