It was a long, and somewhat tense ride back to the UN base. As Red and Rex administered whatever first aid they could to Strelok and his men, you personally saw to the young witch they had found, which they had dubbed the "Little One." Now that you had a better chance to examine her, you noted that even with her shields, she was not much better off than the sick and wounded Ukrainian soldiers she was protecting. She allowed you to cut away the oversized uniform and rags she was wearing as improvised clothing, and you noted numerous cuts and bruises. The extent of any radiation poisoning she suffered was a bit harder to determine.

"All right, I need to check your face for any wounds and for fever." You say, unsure of whether she could actually understand you. You point to your own face and mime taking off your mask for added emphasis.

The Little One shakes her head rapidly and clutches her mask tightly with both hands.

"She resists any attempt to take the mask off. Believe me, we have tried." Strelok warns from his seat.

"Need some help, Cap?" Red says, walking up to you. "I could hit her up with a tranq. Never know what hit her."

>Yeah, we need to get that mask off.

"All right, Red." You whisper. "Just go in nice and smooth. Try not to do anything to alarm her."

"Got it, Cap." Red nods as she slowly walks up to the Little One, speaking softly. "Hey, girl. Nothing to be afraid of. Just need to look at your back."

The Little One eyes Red warily, but gives a very slight nod to allow her to approach. You see Red slowly pull out a syringe full of tranquilizer out of one of her belt pouches and carefully hides it in her palm. Red then brushes aside the girl's dark hard to get a clearer view of the back of her neck. You're not sure if the Little One's hair was naturally dark, or just stained from all of the mud and filth she had obviously been crawling around in.

"Back of the neck looks good, no serious injuries." Red reports and looks at you. You nod.

Like a snake, Red wraps an arm around the Little One's head to keep her from moving and jabs the syringe into her neck. You quickly lunge forward as well to help hold the girl down and prevent her flailing from hurting Red or herself.

"It's all right, it's all right." Red whispers in her ear as the tranquilizer works its way throug her system.

Finally, the Little One stops struggling and goes limp. Red unstraps the mask and you grab the front and pull it off.

Honestly, you should have been expecting it, but the sight of the Little One's face still caught you off guard. Massive, horrendous looking burn scars marred the girl's face like ugly stains. The worst of it seemed to be on the left side of her face, where her eye looked to be almost fused shut.

"Holy shit." Red gags, putting a hand to her mouth.

"Guess that's why she didn't want to take the mask off." You grumble. "Come on, we need to get these burns cleaned and dressed before infection sets in."

The Little One is still asleep by the time Bullseye lands the Osprey. Strelok and his men are ushered away to the main field hospital. However, the Little One is quickly whisked away to the main hospital facility, where the most serious cases were taken. There, Rubens, Janice, and a whole slew of doctors spent the night examining her.

After getting decontaminated, you wait outside the examination room. In fact, you actually lose track of the time, only being woken up who knows how many hours later by Janice, holding a cup of coffee in each hand.

"You really should get some rest in the barracks." Janice sighs. Her bloodshot eyes and stress-induced wrinkles marring her otherwise flawless features.

"Same could go for you." You yawn. "So what's the news?"

"Well, physically, she's more or less fine. Me and Rubens fixed up all the physical wounds, including the burns."

"Any reason why she couldn't talk?" You ask.

"Well, her throat had been damaged too, no doubt from breathing in superheated air. This girl, she was at ground zero." Janice frowns.

"Jesus." You take a sip of coffee wince. "God, it's like machine oil."

"Sorry, it's straight out of the pot. Obviously I didn't have time to make it myself." Janice sighs and takes a sip from her own coffee, wincing at the terrible taste as well.

"So what's the next step?"

"The next step would be to contact the Ukrainian coven and see if they can identify her." Janice sighs. "But with the state everything is in right now, I don't know how long that could take."

"How about we talk to her?" You suggest. "I mean, it's not likely we're going to find her next of kin. Where the hell did the Ukrainian coven go, anyways?"

"Well," Janice sighs. "Most of the senior matrons for the Ukrainian coven evacuated to Warsaw when the bombs fell. They also took all of their important records and artifacts with them, since nobody was sure at the time how far the bombardments would go."

"Wonderful." You shake your head. "Come on, let's go, then."

The both of you enter the examination room, which is now empty save for Rubens and the Little One, sitting glumly on the examination table in the center of the room. Now clad in a hospital gown and still somehow wearing that mask again.

"She wouldn't calm down until we put it back on." Rubens sighs, rubbing her temple. "It appears she's very attached to it."

"Can she speak yet?" Janice asks.

"Unfortunately, no. I thought healing her throat would do the trick, but she hasn't spoken a single word. Perhaps it's a psychological thing." Rubens sighs. "She can write and do crude hand signs. Unfortunately, I can't read cryllic."

Rubens then slips a clipboard to you. On it, you can see all kinds of alien symbols and scratches on the paper.

"Hm, yes, that might be an issue." Janice frowns. "But we have translators, right?"

"Yes, but the girl won't talk to any of them." Rubens shakes her head. "This is why I always avoided pediatrics. Kids are always a headache."

"Wait a minute..." Janice's expression brightens. "How about Laika? She's about the same age, and knows how to read and write cryllic. Maybe the Little One will trust her more."

"That's a good idea." You nod. "Rubens, you think you can get somebody to bring Laika up? Also tell them to have Misono and Tarin brought up as well."

"Right, right." Rubens sighs as she picks up the phone.

That leaves you and Janice with the Little One. The girl seems to just stare at the both of you, that gas mask of hers making her hidden gaze more than a little unsettling.

"Is she... is she staring at me?" Janice whispers.

"Well, there certainly is a lot to stare at." You chuckle.

"Please, we're on duty right now." Janice rolls her eyes as she shoves you lightly on the shoulder.

The Little One then looks down at her own chest and her shoulders droop, causing you to laugh as your suspicions are confirmed.

The door then opens as Misono wheels Laika in. You see an odd distortion right behind them, no doubt Tarin. She was taking her role as bodyguard extremely seriously, as she did with all of her mission roles. Red also comes in and waves.

"Yo Cap-"

That's when you hear a wordless screech as a clipboard flies out from nowhere and smacks Red directly in the face.

"Ah! What the-" Red yelps.

You then see the Little One's arms flailing as she scrabbles to find something, anything, else to throw at Red.

"Red, you should go!" You hiss.

"Yeah, yeah! I get it!" Red groans as she quickly ducks back out of the door. It appears that the Little One still remembered Red drugging her.

"Something I should know?" Janice raises an eyebrow.

"Uh, I'll tell you about it later." You say and knell next to Laika, who looks have just woken up. "Hey, Laika?"

"Yeah, Will?" Laika yawns loudly. "I was having such a nice dream too..."

"See that girl?" You point to the Little One. "She's a little like you. A young witch who's scared and scarred. She also can't speak and can only write in cryllic. You think you can talk to her for us?"

"Mmmmmm, I can try." Laika nods groggily. "But... I want something in return!"

"I'll get you a brownie from the cafeteria." You say.

"An entire chocolate cake!" Laika huffs.

"Three brownies."

"Deal!" Laika nods as she wheels forward to the Little One.

"You spoil her too much." Misono mumbles as she eyes the Little One warily. "Can she be trusted?"

"She helped a bunch of stranded Ukrainians survive the bombs. I'm pretty sure she can be trusted." You nod. "Getting protective of Liaka now, I see."

"Of course. It's only natural for sisters to look out for one another, yes?" Misono smiles. "Though Laika keeps insisting she's the older one because she was here 'first.'"

"I wouldn't argue with her over that." You chuckle.

You turn back to look at Laika and the Little One. You can hear Laika talking to her in Russian, while reading the notes the Little One scribbles down. Finally, Laika turns away and wheels back to you.

"So, so, she says her name is Artya." Laika says. "Lived in a town in Eastern Ukraine, near the border. Then the bombs went boom and she was all alone."

"I see." You say grimly. "Did she say how she survived?"

"I think she didn't have magic before." Laika frowns. "She says this is the first time she 'made sparkles.' The 'sparkles' kept her safe."

"It's not unusual for potential witches' powers to manifest in extremely stressful situations." Rubens nods. "Getting an atomic bomb dropped on you could do the trick."

"Laika, I want you to talk to Artya then, and have her recall EVERYTHING she can, all right? I'll throw in another brownie."

"Aye aye!" Laika salutes and wheels back to the Little O- Artya.

"This could be an issue." Janice frowns.

"What issue?" You ask.

"If what Laika is saying is true, then Artya wasn't a witch when the bombs the dropped. That means it's likely she won't be in their records." Janice sighs. "If her place of birth cannot be established..."

"...then that means any coven could try to claim her, right?" Misono finishes.

"Correct." Janice looks to Laika and Artya, now seemingly happily "chatting" with each other. "I mean, standard procedure would be to bring her before the Ukrainian coven to confirm her identity. But if that doesn't happen, other covens may try to file a claim. She'd be put in the middle of a legal battle if that were the case."

"Then what's the RIGHT course of action, then?" You ask.

"You have a point there, Janice." You nod. "It's probably in Artya's best interest that we handle this quietly."

"I'm sure I can drop a message to the Ukrainian coven through private channels." Janice assures you. "But, I think we need to find somewhere to put up Artya while the arrangements are being made."

"Well, we can't just leave here." You frown. "We still have work to do."

"Actually, if I might interject." Ruben steps in. "I'm sorry to say this, Captain, but your job is done here."

"What?" You blink. "Why?"

"Your bloodwork just came back. You've been out there too long, Captain." Ruben shakes her head. "Even with your MOPP gear, you've absorbed the maximum safe limit of radiation exposure. If you go out again, you'll likely die."

"Well, that can be healed, right?"

"True, but right now healing magic is being prioritized for terminal cases." Rubens huffs. "Besides, this works out in your favor. It gives you an ironclad excuse to ship Artya out of here."

"Well then, the next obvious question is, to where?" You ask.

"Maybe back to your home in the States." Janice suggests. "I know Nungesser has a chateau back in France she hardly ever uses. Maybe she'd be willing to let us go there. And if things get really desperate, maybe Hessler could pull some strings?"

"Sometimes, the amount of witches I know can get extremely scary." You sigh.

"I think I'll talk to Nun, then. See if she's interested in helping us." You nod. "Being in France gives us some distance from the lines, but still close enough in case anything happens."

"That's good thinking." Janice nods. "You and the girls should have a good time there."

"You make it sound like you're not coming." You frown.

"Well, of course I'm not!" Janice huffs, putting her hands on her hips. "I'm a healwitch, and there's people here that need healing. I can't very well just leave!"

You wanted to protest, but deep down, you knew that Janice was right. Plus, she was speaking in that "don't you even dare try to debate me" tone.

"I suppose Red won't be coming either, then." You say.

"Her skills will be needed, too." Janice says. "Also, she apparently did not make the best first impression with Artya."

"Yeah, that one was kind of my fault." You sigh.

"Besides, it should be fine with you, the girls, and Nungesser. I imagine she'd drag Bullseye along, too." Janice tries to assure you.

"I don't know. I'm thinking we might need some security. Maybe bring Rex or Tarin along with us, just in case." You say.

"Possible, but remember, the more people you take with you, the less we have here. Plus, the larger the party the more attention you might attract." Janice warns.

"I think at least one bodyguard would be prudent." You say. "I mean, Nungesser is an excellent witch, but I have my doubts about her being an actual effective foot soldier or guard."

"That's true." Janice nods. "Well, I'll leave the choice up to you, then."

You pause to think about this. Both Tarin and Rex were skilled. However, Tarin obviously had the clear advantage, being not only a witch but having a very effective power to go along with her strengths. However, those same strengths could also serve to help the UN in Ukraine, as well.

"I think Rex will be sufficient." You say.

"All right." Janice nods. "I'll get the ball rolling with the coven. I'm sure you can sweet talk Utabe into borrowing a craft with UN credentials. That way nobody will ask questions when you fly out."

"Good thinking." You grin. "Sometimes I wonder where we'd be without you."

"Not far, I'd imagine." Janice chuckles. You should probably make your exit before everybody starts waking up."

"Right." You nod and turn to your adopted daughters. "Misono, Laika, we're going to be going on a little trip. Get your things packed and ready to go. Take Artya with you, too."

"Right away!" Misono nods obediently.

"Awwww, but the brownies!" Laika whines.

"We'll stop by the cafeteria on the way out." Misono grunts as she scoops up both Laika and Artya under her arms and carries them out.

"Tarin, keep an eye on them." You say the empty spot right next to you.

"On it." Tarin responds.

"And Red! Go find Bullseye and Rex and tell them we're moving out!"

"Yeah yeah, sure thing, Cap." Red sighs as she finally reveals herself.

Now, you just had a few more things to take care of.

""Go do what you have to do, Nun." You sigh, half fearing what these "preparations" might be.

"Thank you, Captain!" Nungesser says happily before skipping off.

Well, you suppose things would work out the best. Well, probably not best for Bullseye, but fairly good for everybody else involve. You decide now was the time to go talk things out with Utabe to get your transport arranged. Utabe was where you expected, at the headquarters building. Being the local UN commander, he naturally did not get any chance to sleep since he had to manage the crisis 24/7. It was just him a few unlucky overnight staff, listening to radio messages and reading reports. Utabe gulps down a cup of coffee, and you suspect it's pretty much replaced all his bodily fluids at this point.

"Captain Pierce, I did not expect to see you here at this hour." Utabe grunts. "I hear you managed to bring in a witch, in addition to those soldiers."

"We did." You nod. "She's being taken care of now."

"Good, good." Utable takes another absentminded sip of his coffee, slightly wincing at the presumably horrible taste. "I suppose this isn't for some social call."

"Unfortunately no." You shake your head. "I was wondering if you would authorize us to borrow a UN Osprey, with a flight plan to France."

"With a unit of your stature, I normally would not ask questions. However, France is a long way from here." Utable frowns. "May I ask why?"

"Understandable." Utabe nods. "And the second?"

"Well, we're also taking the witch we rescued with us. There's a lot of questions about which coven has claim to her, so we want her to lay low for a bit."

"Ah, politics. Even the covens are not free of it." Utabe shakes his head. "I shall sign off on it, then. I guarantee that you will not be harassed or questioned in transit."

"Thanks, Colonel." You nod.

"Is there anything else I can do for you?" Utabe asks.

"No, that's all." You shake your head.

"All right then." Utabe nods. "Best of luck to you, Captain."

As you walk out of the headquarters, you run into a freshly roused Bullseye, being accompanied by Red and Rex. Bullseye, of course, looks like complete shit, having been just woken up in the night. Rex, on the other hand, looks the same as ever. Guy was a freaking robot sometimes, you think.

"Yo, Boss." Bullseye yawns. "What the hell is this all about? A night flight?"

"Yeah." You say. "Gonna take that witch we rescued somewhere safe."

"Safer than a UN base?" Bullseye raises an eyebrow.

"A UN base near the Russian border and very likely about to get irradiated by fallout from a nearby nuclear explosion?" You counter.
