You fly across town with Kaya, making your way back to your apartment. You have no idea how nobody sees you as you fly above their heads, but, given the circumstances, that isn't a major concern.

No, you have much bigger problems. Like a demon who easily overpowered you, kidnapped your friend, and threatened to kill him a week from today.

The demons you've fought before have been terrifying enough. Even the weakest among them was deadly, as the cuts into your back plainly demonstrate. But Arthur is in an entirely different league. He dodged your most powerful attack and tossed you around like a ragdoll. Your life would have ended tonight had he not insisted on another match. You still aren't entirely sure why he wants to fight you, other than as a display of power to Koenma and his father.

Kaya is silent the entire trip, focusing entirely on flying. She's promised to find out what she can about Arthur, but the problem of getting stronger still lingers.

>A. Ask Kaya how you're supposed to get strong enough to fight within a week

>B. Ask Kaya if she has any more tools that could help you out

"So, how am I supposed to get strong enough to fight within a week?" you ask Kaya.

She glances back, diving to avoid a flock of geese. "Well, I guess I'm going to have to train you."

She turn her attention back to flying before continuing. "I was supposed to teach you a bit once you accepted this job, but you caught a demon almost immediately, and with this case brewing, there wasn't much time."

Kaya sighs. "I'm sorry I put this off for as long as I did, but I'll teach you to better control your Spirit Energy and get stronger. I just hope it will be enough."

The two of you land on an empty sidewalk not far from the Apartment Complex. Kaya has you lean on her shoulder as she walks you home. As you approach your apartment, you see Lucy standing outside of it, getting ready to knock on the door.

Glancing your way, Lucy sees you and Kaya, and quickly approaches.

"There you are," she greets. "I was just coming over to see if you were ready to study."

Lucy frowns. "Wait, you don't look so good. Did you get into another fight?"

I started the manga because when this quest began so I could understand what was going on. I finished it the other day, and I would recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it.

Favorite protagonist: Kuwabara
Favorite antagonist: Toguro
Spoilers: Even though Toguro did some fucked up stuff, I wish he hadn't chosen that punishment for himself ;_;.

You decide to keep quiet and let Kaya come up with an explanation. Hopefully one that won't piss Lucy off too greatly.

"Well, we were doing some fieldwork in the woods between here and Allentown," Kaya explains. "And a large cat attacked him."

"Large cat?" Lucy asks, not sounding like she believes it.

"Yes, some kind of wildcat," Kaya confirms. "Light brown, and pretty big. It attacked from cover and scratched him in the back."

"Wait, a big wildcat?" Lucy asks. "Like a cougar? I didn't think there were any left around here."

"Neither did I," Kaya says, sounding totally convincing even though you're fairly sure she doesn't know what Lucy is talking about. "But that's what we saw. We were lucky to get out of there."

"And who are you?" Lucy asks curiously.

"My name is Kaya," your assistant answers cheerfully. "I work for the same detective agency as your friend here."

Lucy looks at the two of you in confusion and a bit of suspicion.

"Yeah, I got a job working for a detective in an agency outside of town," you explain. "Kaya here is another of his assistants."

"Really, when did this happen?" Lucy asks suspiciously.

"He was given the job right after he was released from the hospital," Kaya tells her.

"I would have told you sooner, but you've been giving me the cold shoulder all week," you finish.

Lucy looks down, embarrassed. "Oh. Well, congratulations. I'm glad you're finally doing something smart with you time."

She looks back up, giving you a smile. "So, working with a detective, that must be exciting!"

You nod. "Yeah, but it's also going to keep me busy all week. A tough case has come up."

Lucy looks a bit concerned after hearing that. "I don't suppose you can tell me anything about it?"

Kaya shakes her head. "Sorry, but we aren't supposed to say anything."

Lucy sighs. "I understand. But, you won't be in any danger or anything, will you? The way you're making it sound...."

"I'll be fine," you promise.

For once, Lucy seems to accept your answer, and you see relief wash over her as she visibly relaxes.

"Good," she tells you. "Anyway, how badly are you hurt, do you need to go to a hospital?"

"He'll be fine," Kaya assures her. "His cuts are shallow, and I'm trained in first aid. I can treat his injuries just fine."

Lucy nods. "Okay. Well, I guess this means we won't be studying together. Get better, alright? And good luck on your case. I'll see you next weekend."

Lucy turns and returns to her own apartment, and Kaya leads you to yours. Your father is at a faculty meeting, and won't be home for a little while, which will save you from explaining all of this to him. True to her word, Kaya does fix up your wounds, disinfecting them and bandaging them up. So long as you keep your shirt on, nobody should notice.

"Nothing Arthur did to you appears to be life-threatening," she informs you. "But I'd suggest getting some rest for tonight to recover a bit. We can start training first thing tomorrow."

"Thanks for your help," you tell Kaya as she helps you to your bedroom.

She gives you a smile. "No problem. It's my job. I'd be a pretty lousy assistant if I left you out in the middle of that field."

Kaya helps you sit down on your bed, then gets you a glass of water.

"Make sure you keep hydrated," she instructs. "And get some sleep. I'll be back tomorrow morning, and I expect you to be ready for some hard work."

She exits the room, shutting the door behind her and leaving you to your rest.

Taking a sip of water, you lie down, pulling up your blanket and falling into a deep sleep. You don't recall if you dream, but you feel much better when you wake up in the morning, at least physically. Maybe Spirit Energy helps excel your recover when you get hurt.

Leaving your bedroom, you find the kitchen empty. Your dad's probably still asleep. So, you make breakfast quietly, then shower and put on a fresh change of clothes.

By the time Kaya arrives, you're all ready to go, and the two of you quickly move away from the apartment complex. Once the two of you have walked down the street, Kaya grabs your shoulder, stopping you from going further. When you turn around to face her, you see a serious, determined expression on her face.

"Alright, Detective, it's time to start your training," she tells you. "The first thing you're going to do is run across town and through the woods without stopping. If I see you stop even once, there will be consequences!"

"What kinds of consequences?" you ask.

Kaya answers with a grin, summoning her oar out of nowhere and swinging it over her shoulder. You get the message well enough. If you stop running, she'll smack you upside the head with that thing.

You run across town, constantly looking over your shoulder or into the sky to see where your assistant is. She mostly hangs above but occasionally swoops in close when it seems like you're running out of steam. For some reason, you are terrified of what will happen if you stop, so you don't.

You make it to the field, and your legs feel like jelly. You begin to anticipate them collapsing beneath you at any second, and cringe at the mental image of yourself face down in the grass being beaten by that oar. Your legs must share your fear, because they keep going, carrying you through the woods all the way to Allentown.

You finally stop, putting your hands on your knees and catching your breath. Kaya descends on her oar, hovering beside you and giving a pleasant smile.

"Very good!" she praises cheerfully. "You didn't even stop once! Now, run the other way!"

Your legs are hurting badly, but you still do as she says, turning around and rushing through the forest as fast as you can. Kaya hovers right behind you until you reach the field, at which point she climbs back into the sky. When you begin to stumble, she comes back down, and you quickly correct yourself.

When you reach your destination, you collapse in exhaustion as Kaya comes back down, handing you a bottle of water which you begin to quickly gulp down.

"Good," she tells you. "The more we push your body, the more we'll push your spirit, so your Spirit Energy can continue to grow. We need to push you as hard as we can if we want to get you strong enough for this fight."

Kaya smiles down at you. "Well, get back up! We have more training to do!"

She reaches down, offering you her hand.

Well the last one was pretty hot.
>>
>>40769445
"Why am I just running instead of learning new techniques or practicing my fighting?" you ask Kaya, staying seated.

"Like I said, if we push your body, we'll push your spirit," she reiterates. "It's a great way to get stronger, though it's more effective if we have months to work on it rather than a few days. As for other types of training, I have a whole regiment planned, now get up."

She pulls you to your feet and hops off the oar. The two of you walk behind the apartment complex before Kaya suddenly whirls on you, swinging her oar and smacking you in the face with it.

You see stars, and take a step back under the force of the impact. You can see well enough to know that she's about to take another swing, and duck beneath it. She attacks again, sweeping low, and you jump over it, only to get another hit to the face as you land.

As you step back, Kaya puts the oar back over her shoulder.

"Now we're going to work on dodging," she explains, retrieving a piece of chalk and drawing a small circle around the two of you. "We're going to keep going until you can go two whole minutes without being hit once. That last exchange took about ten seconds."

She steps forward, getting ready to swing. "You can only dodge. No blocking, no counterattacks. Those won't always be viable options. You'll need to learn to get out of the way or die."

The happy smile returns to her face. "Are you ready?"

You duck, then leap back as she swipes at your feet. You step to the left as she slices down, then lean backwards to avoid a diagonal swipe. You duck beneath one more attack before she manages to catch you in the side.

"Again!" she tells you.

It takes about an hour for you to reach the two minute mark on your evasion. By that time, you're covered in bruises, your head is swimming, and you see three Kayas. You've certainly felt better.

"Well done," she compliments, handing you another bottle of water. "Tomorrow, we'll keep going until you can dodge for four minutes."

"You're totally getting off on this," you tell her in an accusatory tone.

The grin you receive in response does nothing to prove you wrong. In fact, you're pretty sure you're terrified now.

"So what if I am?" Kaya asks. "It's always important to like what you do, and what I'm doing is whipping you into fighting shape."

Her expression turns less sadistic and more concerned. "Don't misunderstand me. I'm trying to keep you from getting yourself and your friend killed. If I had my way, we'd be spending a couple of months on this training, but we've only got a few days. Arthur is faster than I am, he's much, much stronger than I am. As it is now, he could probably kill you with a single well-placed punch."

Kaya slings her oar back over her shoulder. "He's going to tear you part unless I make you stronger. And if I need to show some tough love to do it, then that's what I'm going to do."

She grins. "And I'm going to enjoy it."

She taps her chin, a thoughtful expression on her face. "We've worked on your stamina, your endurance, your speed, your agility, and your ability to push yourself through pain and exhaustion. Otherwise, I'd say your combat skills are more than acceptable. I've seen some of your fights, after all, and you fought well."

Kaya snaps her fingers. "I've got it! We need to work on your Spiritual Awareness as well! Take a seat, close your eyes, cross your legs, put your hands on your knees!"

You do as she says, taking a seat, closing your eyes, placing your hands on your knees, and crossing your legs, not necessarily in that order.

You do as Kaya instructed, concentrating and trying to feel the energy floating through your body. It really tests your patience and concentration to sit there and do nothing, but studying subjects that never interested you has taught you a thing or two about persevering through this sort of thing.

Your eyes snap open as you finally begin to feel what Kaya was talking about. It's the same energy you channel into your Spirit Gun. You feel it flow through your body, just as you felt it flow into your finger before.

Your mind is finally consciously aware of your Spirit Energy.

You're not entirely sure what that will mean in the long run, but judging by Kaya's expression, it's a good thing. You stand back up, stretching a bit.

"Perfect!" Kaya exclaims in excitement. "You've got it! Now that your mind's aware of your energy, just like your body, you'll be able to use your energy more effectively. You can still only use your Spirit Gun once a day, but I expect it'll pack a slightly bigger punch now."

She gives you a warm smile and lets you lean on her shoulder. "Come on, let's get you home."

"Do you want to go get something to eat instead?" you ask as the two of you walk.

She glances down at you in surprise and a bit of curiosity. "I don't think you're in much shape to be going out in public."

Kaya looks back up, changing directions and walking into town. "But, after the beating I gave you, I suppose I can treat you to lunch."

The two of you go to the local burger joint, each ordering a burger, a milkshake, and a side of fries. The food is delicious like always, but after a hard workout, it tastes even better.

You get the sense that Kaya hasn't had much experience with this type of food, because she continues going on about how good it is. You enjoy burgers as much as the next guy, but she certainly isn't helping stereotypes about Americans.

Nobody asks you about your injuries. You've gotten into serious fights for years, so it's not entirely uncommon for you to look a little beaten up. Besides, you doubt anyone really cares. You don't really know any of the people here.

So, how long have you been a spirit guide thing? And how does this whole death thing work anyway? Do you just end up at some big office somewhere where they process you or is it more like some sorta transcendence into enlightenment?
>>

"Did Spirit World find out anything about Arthur?" you whisper, leaning in a bit close.

Kaya glances around before whispering back. "Yes, as a matter of fact. We found some information on him in the records department. It seems that Arthur is a Brahmarakshasa."

That word honestly sounds made up. Even Kaya seems to be having a difficult time pronouncing it, so she just gives up and repeats it as "Spirit Sage."

"There are sages throughout the world who dedicate their lives to mastering Spiritual Energy and techniques," Kaya explains. "Many use this knowledge to help others, or pass it down to the next generation with that goal in mind. Some, however, use their knowledge selfishly, and hoard it for themselves. King Enma does not take kindly to those types of sages, and punishes them after they die, transforming them into demons and banishing them, either to Earth or the Demon World."

Well, that explains Arthur's vendetta with the rulers of Spirit World.

>A. Ask what sorts of techniques he had.

Seems a bit counterproductive to turn all of these powerful people into the Spirit World's worst enemies. Sounds like he'd be better off forgetting his grudge and putting them to work or just making sure nobody else gets to them.
>>

"What sort of techniques did he have?" you ask.

"Well, being someone with Spiritual Awareness who lived to a fairly old age, he probably possessed many techniques we don't know about," Kaya answers. "He's also had the last century as a demon to learn some more. But he was known for one technique above all others."

"You see," Kaya explains. "Arthur could easily summon and command low class demons known as "Trainer Demons". They were incredibly weak by demonic standards, but in the world of humans, they were a force to be reckoned with. Arthur commanded many of the, having them steal and kill in his name. Arthur and his demons became notorious in the area where he lived, and as word of him spread, his fate was sealed. He drew the attention of a demon named Rando, who hunted down sages, stole their techniques, and murdered them. Arthur was one of his earlier victims."

Kaya's expression turns nervous. "It's possible that Arthur has improved his technique, allowing him to summon stronger demons, like the one we fought in the woods."

>A. So Arthur probably won't be alone, then

>B. It doesn't matter how many demons he has, you're going to kill Arthur and rescue Bruce

"If he's improved his techniques and learned new ones, why isn't this Rando demon hunting him down?" you ask Kaya.

"Rando was defeated while attempting to steal the powers of a psychic named Genkai," Kaya answers. "As a matter of face, it was the last Spirit Detective who stopped him. Besides, Rando improved upon the techniques he stole from others. He wouldn't have bothered hunting Arthur a second time for an improvement on his technique."

Kaya leans back, picking her burger back up ."My point is that Arthur is dangerous. He has a century of experience, commands demons, and has your friend. I am going to train you as best as I can to face him, but you'll have to stick with me through it all."

She smirks. "And, given what you're up against, you should be happy that I "get off on it" in this case."

"I'm going to give everything I have," you promise. "And I'm going to defeat Arthur."

Kaya studies you for a moment, taking in the seriousness of your expression, the determination in your voice, and all that she's seen you do today. A smile works its way onto her face, and you realize that she truly believes you can do it, if, of course, she trains you as hard as she intends.

You can feel the pain already.

"That's the spirit!" she declares rather loudly, drawing some stares.

Kaya looks around nervously before returning to her food. The two of you finish your meals, and she escorts you home. You sleep well that night, and the next day, training continues. Just as before, you put in everything you have while training, knowing that in a few short days, it will mean the difference between life and death.

I'll answer questions here for a little bit.

So did Boton get promoted to a higher position in the Spirit World?

Does Kaya know Boton?
>>
>>40771745
Are we still capable of fucking up the training?
>>
>>40771745
Will we end up running into the old cast if we somehow had a student exchange program for the summer to Japan?
>>
>>40771789
Kaya knows Boton. Boton still pilots the river Styx, but also acts as an advisor to Koenma.

>>40771806
Nah, you done good.

>>40771810
Probably not. I mean, Botan might cameo at some point if you visit Spirit World, and some minor characters might pop up at some point, but I have no plans for Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, or Hiei.
>>
>>40771847
Shouldn't we be worrying about, like, other demons while we're training?
>>
>>40771857
None are really making trouble in your area right now.
>>
>>40771866
Whats going on Bruce's end?
>>
>>40771896
Terror, pants-shitting terror.
>>
>>40771914
This is kind of weird for me because I have two dogs named Kaya and Bruce
>>
>>40771940
Really? Damn.
>>
>>40771745
Damn, missed most of it. Thanks for running Som.
>>
>>40771973
Thanks for reading.
>>
>>40771985
How often you planning on updating this, SOM? Since you started up another Saiyan quest and all. Honestly I'd like to see this update more often than that other one, even if I missed today's run.
>>
>>40772044
Updates of each quest will depend on what I feel like running at the time. Right now, I'm having more fun with this than the Saiyan Quest.
>>
>>40772071
Summoning SOON(™) Som?
