Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you acquired a mistress, traversed the spirit realm, and overshot your destination.

It is currently the 12th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You decide that your best bet is finding one of the wandering tribes that frequents this area. That in mind, you dismount your make-shift carriage and will the ice which makes up most of its body to dissipate. The bathtub and its contents crash into the sand, sinking a good few feet into the fine grains before stopping. You carefully pull off your cloak and lay it over the mountain of furs, corpses, severed heads, and ceramic.

Your cloak drops down a few feet almost instantly, though seems to have some trouble with the corpse of the gargoyle. Eventually it manages to maneuver the massive beast into itself, and from there the bathtub is a simple matter. Speaking of, what are you going to do with that thing? Detached from the pipes, it's useless to you. Just a big bowl really. As you once more drape your cloak around your shoulders, Ricky's tentacle slides out to wrap around your waist. You pat the semi-ethereal appendage, surprised to find that your hand passes through it.

How does that work? He can affect you with the limb but you can't effect the limb? That's just odd. Regardless, the tentacle recedes and you set off towards the distant form of the rocky outcrop jutting from the sands like a giant beacon, guiding you towards you. Just on the opposite side you think you can see smoke trails drifting lazily skyward. Signs of civilization. Then again, the desert can be a funny thing. For all you know those smoke trails are coming from a dozen miles away.

You get about a hundred feet before you slip and tumble down a steep dune, landing half-burried at the bottom. Sighing in frustration, you dig your Stone Gauntlet out of your cloak and will it to open. It splits open, and you slide it onto your arm. As it reaches your shoulder the armored sleeve snaps shut and you gesture, the sand leaping to obey your wordless commands.

It doesn't take you long to craft a basic stone frame. It's a long sled with a ram on the prow to break through dunes and a stabilizer at the back, just to keep it stable. To steer it you'll be using poles attached to prongs which extend from the center of the craft and control the sails, of which there will be two.

Once you've got the basic frame down you start pulling fabric and cloth out of your cloak. You pull out your black linen robe, your various pairs of trousers and shirts, your underrobes. You bind them together with pins fashioned from stone and attach them to the mast with hooks. Once you've got the souls crafted the rest is easy. You sit yourself down at the rear of the ship, your back rested against the stabilizer, and pick up the prongs attached to the mast.

The wind picks up and snaps the sails taught, the ship lurching forward. In no time at all you're proceeding across the desert sands at a good clip, though as you sail an idea occurs to you. Between the two prongs you're using for steering and the mast, you construct a sort of stone sheet. Essentially they end up acting as two additional, if less than ideal, sails.

(2/3)
Not a perfect picture, but good enough. Hard as shit to find art for sand ships.
>>
You make good time getting around the side of the rocky outcrop but slower progress after that, as the outcrop blocks the wind. Eventually you catch sight of the 'pavitra thikani', as the nomads call them. Holy places. You've always heard them called 'singing arches' in the city. You're not wholly sure why they call them holy, but they are uniquely suited to serve as semi-permanent desert settlements. Massive stone arches, eroded by wind and rain over thousands of years until they're filled with passages, holes, and grooves.

You pull back on your steering rods, the sails folding in and allowing you to come to a slow stop. You take a moment to reach into your cloak and extract the long cloth wrap which is intended to serve as a turban. Most nomads, though not all, considered a man's unveiled face to be a sign of disrespect and immodesty. You're not particularly sure why, you just recall reading it in a book when you were a youth.

You wrap the turban such that a veil descends to cover nearly the whole of your face, save your eyes and the very top of your nose. It's a little too short. It ends up draping down the front of your chest, obscuring the whole of your neck as well. You're glad you picked white, if you'd picked red, blue, or yellow you might end up pissing of a tribe by wearing their colors without being one of them. White is the color of outsiders, so you ought to appear respectful but not presumptuous.

Once you've properly veiled yourself you push out the steering rods and the sails snap open, carrying you forward. Two great fires have been lit outside the nomad's camp, the sources of the smoke trails. They seem to be holding some sort of ceremony, based on the number of people gathered around each fire. Banners of all shapes and sizes hang about the camp, though you don't recognize the heraldry. Their symbol is a black sword wrapped in a blue cloth, on a red field. No tribe you know of uses such symbols.

>>
WE FORGOT ANOTHER MOUNT
>>
They seem to have set up a number of dome shaped huts at the base of each arch, and turned the caves which fill the upper reaches into living space for their nobles. You can spot a few patrols near the fire, but it's dark enough that they probably don't see you yet. If they do, they're not approaching you.

You pull back on your steering rods, slowing the sandship to a halt and crossing the steering rods in front of you so the wind won't snap open the sails again and carry off your current primary means of transportation. You push yourself to your feet, stretching out your back. Sitting propped up against what is essentially a stone wedge in the sand is really murder on your back, especially since you have to keep leaning into it in order to steer.

Once you've worked some of the stiffness from your spine you set off carefully across the sands. The camp lies in a depression so you have to half slide, half walk down the side of a dune. You manage not to make yourself look like an idiot by falling flat on your face, but it's a close thing.

As you near the camp some of the men, mounted upon large lizards roughly the size of a particularly large ox, stomp across the sands towards you. They're wrapped up quite similar to yourself, in plain white robes and a long turban which covers nearly the whole of your face. Of course, their turbans are died a deep indigo blue, and topped with some sort of metal pot helm. They wear red sashes around their waist. They're armed in armored, a coat of plates draped over their torso and swords protruding from just behind their back.

You would think that they would wield spears, but you don't see a spear in the bunch. They seem to instead favor short swords with heavy, curved blades. Chopping weapons, you'd imagine. More axe than sword. You stop as they draw near, and most of them do the same. One steps forward, sliding off of his mount with a sort of easy grace. He taps his chest twice with his index finger and thumb, though you're not sure what the gesture might mean. Perhaps related to your own, bowing and touching your forehead and chest?

Regardless, the man speaks. “You are far from home, city dweller. What brings you to us, on this new day? You come during the festival of rebirth, an auspicious occasion.”
(1/2)
>>
You notice that two men are using shovels to retrieve hot coals from beneath the bonfires and gathering them in pits, where women are cooking what appears to be entire racks of lamb ribs. It smells delicious, of black pepper and cinnamon, among a host of other spices you can't immediately identify.

You force yourself to ignore the food, and the hunger gnawing in your stomach from having gone a day without food. He asked you what you were doing here.

You offhandedly remark. “I've been traveling through the realm of a Great Spirit, but one of his underlings lead me astray. I wandered through an endless maze of my own design, until eventually I came upon a dead end and I was forced to return too soon to the mortal coil. I fear that unless the stars align I will need to proceed upon foot, by way of sandship, or rely on the blessings of Pani and Surya to guide my path. Otherwise I'll never reach El-Amin.”

One of the men to your left gestures as if raising a pipe to his lips, and the man you're speaking with nods. One of the other men tries not to laugh but ends up snickering anyway. You can surmise that they think you're high as a kite, or perhaps simply coming down off a high. The presumed leader, the man you're speaking too, slows his speech and adopts an almost patronizing tone. “Would you like something to eat, or to drink? We could give you a place to rest, until 'the spirits leave you'.”

That's actually quite nice of them, that they're willing to just put up some stoned outsider for a night. Most tribes you're familiar with are less than fond of foreigners and those that do tolerate them typically only tolerate those that our useful. Plus, you must admit their food smells pretty good. It's been ages since you had a ribs.

You think you are salty?

You think you know salt?

You don't know shit

I live in a constant state of salt with this quest

Everyday
Every thread

There is nothing but salt

Literally with each new post I somehow become more salty

Have you ever been in a constant state of salt?

You shake your head sadly, adopting a serious expression. “The spirits never leave me, I'm afraid. They've are as much a part of me as we are all parts of the universe. That being said, I'm not opposed to the idea of a meal. However, I must be continuing my journey to El-Amin soon. If you would allow me, I would make an offering of meat to complement your current stock.”

The patrolmen glanced at each other briefly, the leader eventually speaking. “Where do you keep this 'meat'? You've nowhere to store it that I can see.”

You hold up a finger, begging a moment's pause. Then pull your cloak wide and urge Ricky to produce the corpse of the dragon your killed. It slides out of your cloak, in all its skinless wonder. Ricky's tentacles grip it by the neck, the tail, and its rear legs. You take it from him carefully, cradling it in your arms as one might a child. Once you've got a firm grasp on it, Ricky's tentacles retreat.

The men are silent, speechless you imagine. The leader turns, shouting something in a language you barely recognize. A subdialect of Samjan perhaps? You catch the phrases 'winged messenger' and it's followed shortly after by the reverent term used to refer to the Gods as a whole in prayer. You hear a 'dark one' thrown in there at some point, you think. Fuck, he's really attracting a lot of attention. More people are coming over, leaving the campfires. Women and children, as well as men. You see a child rushing towards one elderly man in particular with a long white beard.

Just what have you started, exactly?
