Your name is Takashi Wakui. You are a sixteen-year old boy in a world where half the population wields Personas—manifestations of inner souls as demons, spirits or deities.
Unfortunately, you do not possess such a power. Recently, a game called AETHER was forcibly installed on your smartphone. You thought it was little more than a piece of nasty spyware, but it turns out that the consequences of playing it are significantly more far-reaching than thought to be...

[The Forgotten City (Sector 0)]: 0%
[Sector 1]: LOCKED
[Sector 2]: LOCKED
[Sector 3]: LOCKED
[Sector 4]: LOCKED

The list continues…

You exit AETHER before you reach the bottom.

You opt to continue north. You continue your journey into the depths of the Forgotten City. This time though, you feel elated and there’s a noticeable spring in your step. The buildings are becoming more and more clustered together. If this broken metropolis were teeming of life, you would be heading directly to the bustling city center.

Eventually, you brush past a tipped over stop sign and come to a clearing. There is a small house in the center. Unlike the towers and apartments surrounding it, this one doesn’t seem derelict or run-down at all. The windows are intact, for one. The building is made out of specially reinforced concrete to protect against both standard and magical attacks, as most buildings these days are. It looks to be particularly sturdy.

Maybe someone who lacks a great deal of self-awareness?

Can do most jobs reasonably well, but has trouble understanding what it is you wanted him to do in the first place.
Keeps using stuff long after most would have them replaced.
No sense of self preservation.

“This is your safehouse!” The tutorial voice chirps. “It can be considered your base of operations. Rest up, eat some food, service your weapons and plan the next mission…the safehouse is a shining beacon in the vast, chaotic and teeming world of the Blackened Void. You do not have to worry about Shadows or demons making their way here; this place is off-limits to them. The key to the safehouse is the DNA of each individual player. Go on, take a look inside!”

True to the voice’s word, there is an electronic scanner at the entrance. You tap it lightly with your finger. A green light flashes and a mechanical door slides open with a hiss.

The first thing you do is turn on the light. This place looks like it hasn’t been occupied for quite some time, and yet looks completely clean. Not a speck of dust anywhere.

You walk a quick circle around the safehouse. It’s not much to go on—there’s a bedroom with two bunks, a bathroom, a small kitchen and a living room. You search for food in the fridge and find nothing except ice cubes. No hot water, too.

The furniture is rather threadbare as well. The couch appears to be transported from twenty years in the past. The table is featureless and the toilet is one of those manual types.

…something catches your eye. A computer terminal placed in the side of the living room. It’s hooked up to a big black case. You give the wireless mouse a gentle shake.

The screen flickers to life.

>SECTOR ZERO SAFEHOUSE TERMINAL LOADED
>LOGGING ON…

It immediately boots up the latest version of the Windows 101 OS. It’s the same one you have at home. There’s the standard stuff, the start menu, the recycle bin, My Computer and so on. Internet appers to be down, or does not exist. But there’s also an application you’ve never seen before in your entire life.

It’s called the ‘AETHER SAFEHOUSE CUSTOMIZATION TOOL’.

You have an inkling of what this does. This pops up on the screen.

>AETHER SAFEHOUSE CUSTOMIZATION TOOL
>A program for altering the contents of the Sector Zero safehouse.

“You can use this program to alter and build the safehouse.” The tutorial says. “However, you need Build EXP, which can be acquired by completing missions and optional objectives. Sometimes you need Macca instead, but Build EXP is generally the norm. As a reward for making it all the way here, you have acquired 6 Build EXP. Go on, try it out!”

You glance away from your phone and track your eyes across the screen.

You click the house. A message stating that the order is being processed appears on the screen. You stand up from the seat and pace around the living room. Now, how exactly is going to work? Would robot maids come out of nowhere and start up a fire or something? Man, that would really be sweet. And thanks to the bizarre nature of the Blackened Void, it wasn’t totally out of the—

“Upgrades to the safehouse occur instantaneously. You don’t have to worry about bills for gas, electricity or water etc. All of these things are completely free. They have to be, otherwise the game would be heavily stacked against the players!”

The safehouse rumbles, as if struck by a small earthquake. The message ‘UPGRADE COMPLETE’ is written there. Sure enough, the terminal now has Internet access, apparently connected to one AETHER wireless connection. You boot up Google to try it out. Then you spend the next few minutes browsing random Internet sites before remembering that hot water was added to the safehouse as well.

“Well, fuck me with a rusty flagpole.” You mumble to yourself as the scalding liquid trickles onto your finger. Somehow, the high temperature does not bother you as much. Possibly due to Ippon-Datara’s innate fire resistance?

You grab a mug from a kitchen drawer and take three deep gulps of tap water. God knows you need it after trekking around cracked roads and through abandoned buildings for an undeterminable amount of time.

“The tutorial mission is almost done…or rather, the first one at least.” The tutorial voice rings. “The last objective on today’s checklist is exiting the Blackened Void. If you head outside, you’ll see a door. Open it to enter the real world. That is to say, Earth!”

You head outside. As expected, there is a door. Several of them, all lined in rows. Only one is available for access, the others are sealed with heavy iron padlocks. Maybe one day you’ll try to open them, but that isn’t today. You feel the need to head home.

You grasp the door handle and swing it open. A bright light assaults you, forcing you to squint. It overtakes you, turning your vision to whiteness. Through the piercing brightness, you hear the following words.

“Tutorial Mission 1 Cleared! Transmitting 6000 Macca to Takashi Wakui’s bank account…”

A blue sky. The sun, shining high. Noise of the city: beeps of cars, laughter of the population, pounding of footsteps against pavement. Skyscrapers ascending, their windows and structure intact. Smiles, frowns, groans, shouts, the expressions of emotions from humans.

“I’m back…” You whisper, as you take in the scenery. A girl is begging her mother to by her an ice-cream. An ambulance rushes through a red light. Advertisements for popular beauty produces flash on one of Akumachi City’s many electronic billboards. Anti-Shadow Operatives off duty stroll past, ribbing each other.

“I’m home.” You gasp. “Oh man!”

You collapse to your knees and cry in relief. For a brief moment, you feel like kissing the pavement, but ultimately decide against it. You are now standing at the entrance to an alleyway, taking in the sunlight.

“Takashi Wakui?”

A familiar and feminine voice catches your attention. You turn around to see Celeste Tachibana, your apartment neighbour, standing behind you. In her hand is her phone and she is staring at you with her mouth agape.

“Don’t move.” She cries, running up to get a closer look. She gasps. “It really is you!”

Then she frowns and puts her hands on the hips. “Where have you been?”

“Hi Tachibana-san.” You say faintly. You are so glad to see Celeste here. You don’t even know her that well. Finally, another person you can talk to that isn’t trying to kill you, a voice from your phone or the manifestation of your innermost soul into a kind of blacksmithing demon. “What’s up?”

“I should be asking you that!” She cries. “Do you know what day it is?”

“The day where everything is fine and nothing bad is going to happen?” You reply, smiling a little.

“It’s the 31st of March. Thursday! You disappeared for over three whole days!”

“Three whole days. Oh well, that’s not…” Then the meaning behind her words hits you like a sledgehammer to the face. “Wait what?"

"You were gone for three whole days. More than seventy two hours!"

"I...what?"

“You were gone. It was like you vanished off the face of the earth.” Celeste mutters. “Your sister said you went out to eat on the night of the 28th. Then a group of Shadows attacked the Entertainment district. You didn’t come back home.”

“Oh man.” You groan. “I was gone for that long…?”

“I had Shizuka-san visit me in the middle of the night, frantically asking me if I had seen you. She was in tears.” Celeste continues. “I couldn’t tell her anything.”

You lower your head, your eyes wide with shock. “Shit…”

“We thought you had been one of the unlucky ones in the assault.” Celeste whispers. “I met your sister again this morning, you know. She looked like she hadn’t slept in days.”

“Wait, you said there was an incident in the Entertainment District?” You ask. “What happened?”

“Shadows attacked.” Celeste says. “They killed so many people. I think the death toll was around three hundred? That was on the night you disappeared, too. Obviously, we had no choice but put the two together.”

So AETHER’s prediction came true. As you needed more evidence for its existence. The Persona inside you was a testament to that.

You suddenly feel the urge to puke. A horrible, rising sickness spreading through your throat.

“I was kinda worried too, you know.” Celeste mumbles. “We only just met, but I thought it still would suck if you died.”

You moan and cover your face with your hands. “I've really fucked up.”

“You did. You better have an explanation for this.” Celeste says hotly.

You shake your head. “When I get back home, my sister is going to hug me to death. And then she’s going to kill me.”

I'm fine. As for my expectations, /tg/ completely blew those away.
-I did not expect you guys to choose an unarmed kicking combat style at all. I am now searching for martial arts that include kicking as their main focus.
-Neither did I expect the smug snake attitude you guys project onto Takashi. Obviously, he can't act like that yet because all of his social stats are at the lowest level. Sounds interesting to write, though.
-I expected people to choose the training manual for unarmed combat. That would have included stuff about Adept fighting styles (which involve something called chi casting).
-I thought people would choose Tower as the initial Arcana.
-Nobody has tried to waifu Shizuka yet. Strange. Or maybe they have and I just haven't heard anything.

The stats weren't appealing. It really was just between Survivability and Hermit. Although in retrospect, it's probably for the best that we didn't pick the self-sacrificing Arcana.

>-Nobody has tried to waifu Shizuka yet. Strange. Or maybe they have and I just haven't heard anything.
I figured you were trying to do that. Honestly, being coddled that much made her seem more like a mom than a wife, but that's from the perspective of someone who can actually cook.
