Mom returns home the following morning, throwing herself into the shower, pulling her change of clothes on as she's already on her way to the kitchen.

As she's leaving, she babbles in rapid Mandarin, "[The place was lovely, Xiao. Maybe if you ever get a boyfriend you can take them there sometime.]" She downs a slice of toast in three bites, "[Now Ed's gonna be coming over for dinner tonight, so can you and your friend promise you'll behave?]"

You just shrug and grunt, Angie watching in confusion as mom just keeps rambling on and on, until she's out the door.

You tell her about the dinner, Angie just shrugging, "I can get out of the house for the night or whatever. Put a pin in it for now though."

She flicks the news on, looking for clues, as more and more stories arise about bizarre happenings around town. Reporters are getting baffled as more and more unexplained weird shit keeps springing up.

There's been several major collapses at a rodeo stadium downtown, gang members turning up with signs of unknown deaths, but with their skin turned pale blue, frost on their lips, they interview a victims mother, down in Romero Street, and yet they're still taking time to talk about that stupid chupacabra story for fluff.

"You'd think with all the actual murder going on-" Angie grunts, stretching out and cracking her back, "That they'd focus on that, not just some dumb urban legend shit." Her neck pops loudly and she groans appreciatively. "Should we check some of this stuff out, or try and chase up what those idiots said about the woman working 'for the city'."

You snatch the remote, rewinding to the frozen looking body. "It's the middle of summer, and that guy has no signs of a struggle." You point out. "That's got to be a stand user."

Angie nods along, "Yeah. So, we're checking out Romero Street then? Ask his mom a few questions, see if she can tell us anything?"

You nod along, "The gangs seem to have some sort of connection to all this mess, maybe they can point us to someone at the top from there."

Angie shrugs an overshirt on, "Sounds like a plan. We bringing the others?"

A good question, Abby still hasn't messaged you about being freed up from her college work yet, on the other hand, Rai took an extra hard beating yesterday by the looks of him, it could do him some good to rest up.

You stare at your phone as you lock the house up behind you.

"We can handle it ourselves." You figure, "Come on, let's get a move on."

A few bus rides later, you're standing at the top of Romero street, about three hundred yards down the street, you can make out the yellow and black of a police line, Angie being quick to tuck her hair up in her beanie and drift behind you as you approach.

Romero street, being a part of a housing project, is largely apartments, the many residents clustered out into the street to gawk at the murder, the police doing their best to hold the public back.

Sure enough, you see Officer Crakehall among them, doing his best to stop a little girl from rushing past the line, tears running down her face. A sister, at a guess. Either way, you stoop and put yourself between Angie and her uncle, looking closer.

The body itself is covered with a blanket now, forensics officers snapping pictures.

The girl breaks past Crakehall, trying to rush forward, but is swiftly picked up and carried away, deposited by a grieving woman sitting on the stairs to an apartment block, the mother on the news.

"I think she'd be our best bet." Your companion hisses.

You're not so sure, you see a few tattoos in the crowd, members of the Hermanos Segador, much, some upset, some impassive, some sneering. The report had just said the man killed today had 'connections to gang violence'. You have a solid guess which gang.

You slowly approach the grieving woman, choking her sobs into a handkerchief, her daughter once again trying to push through the crowd. Calling for her brother.

"Mrs Navez?" You ask.

She glances up, eyes rimmed with red, "Eh?" She asks, "Ar-are you two of Pel's friends?"

You pause, but Angie steps in, "Yeah... we're so sorry for your loss Mrs Navez, Pel used to talk about you all the time. Said you were the best mother a boy could ask for."

She redoubles into sobs for a minute, Angie stooping to stroke her shoulder gently, "I'm sorry Mrs Navez." She croons, shrugging to you.

"He was a good boy...." She manages after a few deep gulps, "He didn't want to fight, not like the other boys, but it was that damn Cucaracha that pushed him into it!" She spits the name like it's a curse.

"Cucaracha?" Angie asks after an appropriate moment, "That's... Pel's boss?"

She sniffs heavily, "Padre Cucaracha...!" She shakes her head with disgust, "That man knows no shame, turning sweet boys into nothing but thugs. One of the three seniors of the Hermanos." She glares at an apartment block down the street, "ROACHES!" She screams, before spitting on the street.

Just get uncomfortably close to an important-looking one, and politely ask if the gang had anything to do with it.

Also see if KFaR can peek under the tarp.
>>
You clench your fists, give her one condolence and slink away, into the crowd. You pick out the most important looking member of the gang, distinguishable by the glimmer of his tacky gold chain, as well as the distinction of his gang tattoo, rather than the usual grim reaper tat, he's got a skeleton wielding two scythes, crossed overhead.

He spots you beside him, towering at least a foot over him and smiles weakly, flashy grille reflecting light as well. "Uh, can I help you?" He asks, taking a few steps away.

You follow him, sticking close, as Angie moves around the crowd to cut him off.

You keep following him through the crowd, walking him towards the edge, "Do you know what happened to Pel Navez?" You ask, civil smile on your face.

He shakes his head quickly. "Nah mang, Pel just got iced, ain't nobody know nothin'."

He freezes when Angie bumps into him from behind, pressing the flat of her knife's blade against his arm, before whipping it down, pressed to his kidneys. "You sure about that?" She hisses.

Your eyes widen in surprise, a far cry from the girl who'd gone near catatonic a police woman killed herself.

Sweat starts rising on the Hermanos forehead, "I- look man, I don't know shit-"

Angie starts to slowly spin the knife, the tip of the blade barely grazing his skin though his shirt. "You sure about that?"

He gulps loudly, then looks around, "Fuckin white girls mang. They all crazy." His eyes flicker towards the building Mrs Navez indicated, before he continues, "Not sure who... but one of Cucaracha's top dudes did it. Maybe it was the old Roach himself. I don't know mang. They do it in a locked room on the third floor. Please just let me go."

Angie pulls the knife away and he scurries off, up the street, away from the crowd and the other gang members.

Angie stows her knife away, shrugging to you, "What? I wasn't ACTUALLY gonna do it. Just had to make him think I would." Her weapon stowed, she jerks her chin at the apartments. "So, what're we doing about that?"

"Come on, round the back." You urge, hurrying down an alleyway, you end up behind the building.

As expected, the buildings has an- admittedly rickety looking- fire escape. "That'd be our way in then." Angie nods. She takes a moment to glance at you, as you tear open a packet of seeds with your teeth.

Summoning 『Kiss From a Rose』, you channel sunlight into the seed, manipulating it to grow a series of ladder like branches up to the fire escape.

Angie scratches her head, "Uhhhh, Xiao? I don't want to sound like a bitch, but...." She lays a hand on your arm, "I don't think you're fitting through one of those windows. Things are tiny."

She has a point, when you squint closer, you realise that the windows are no where near wide enough to accomadate your shoulders. Hell, the fire escape itself, rusted and creaking in the wind, might not even be able to take your hulking frame.

You give her a nod, boosting her up onto the first branch. "You head in alone, but if anything goes wrong, scream, alright? I'll bust a wall down if I have too.

________________

You scale the last few branches and carefully climb onto the fire escape. The metal actively sags away from the wall, just from having your slight weight put on it.

Not wanting to spend any more time on it then you have too, you open a window on the second floor and crawl through.

The hallway inside is thankfully empty, the air thick with the smell of poverty; old garbage, dirt everywhere, roaches crawling across the ceiling. "It's almost like being at home." You whisper to yourself, thinking back to the homeless camp under the I67, back to Old Eddie's rat stew, your cozy little shelter against the back wall of that bakery....

You snap yourself out of it, hurrying along to the stairs, you glance upwards, making sure no one's watching the stairwell. From here, it seems like there's two more floors above, but that guy DID say that that room's on the third floor.

"Business is business." You remind yourself, heading off at the third for landing.

As soon as you step into the hallway, it's blatantly obvious which door is the room which Pel was murdered in. The rest are painted a dull biege, but this door is an electric blue. The whole thing just gives off a menacing aura so strong it might as well be labeled 'Menacing room'.

You move closer to inspect it, standing in a corner of the hallway, far from any windows, it has the tang smell of spilt blood to it... A faint mist even seeps out from the cracks of the door.

You hesitate, considering, until a police officer appears on the floor looking the other way down the hall first. Shit! If he sees you he might kick you out! Not to mention, Crakehall might spot you.

You try the knob on the door, but it's locked....

『Girl In the Fire 』 springs forth, clicking her fingers quietly, you melt the lock to the door from the inside, quickly twisting the knob and stepping through, shutting the door quietly behind you.

Christ it's cold in here. The room is like a walk in freezer, stacks of crates lie all about, filled with white foam packages. It smells like old meat in here too, you soon find the source of that, a bunch of plastic tarps, sprayed with blood and flecks of skull and brain.

Fighting the rising queasiness in your gut, you try to focus on the issue at hand.

The room has it's own smaller hallway off the main room, with a room branching off to the left and right each. You just wish that 『Girl In the Fire 』 could leave your side, like Xiao's can, your stand stuck within a few feet of you, there's little you can do to scout ahead.

You lean against the door, pressing your ear against it, listening for footsteps. You start to shiver, lamenting the fact that 『Girl In the Fire 』 can't raise your body heat as blanket heat.

When you hear the steps finally retreat, you pull off the door, your ear peeling off, skin sticking to it for a few moments, before you glance back down the inner hallway.

Picking at random, you take the door on the left, cracking it open, you step inside. The room you step into isn't refrigerated at all, warm as the Texas summer day outside.

A middle aged mexican man in a white suit is staring you down from behind his desk, a bunch of different playing cards splayed over his desk. He seems genuinely surprised to see you. "Who are you... who steps into Papa Cacuracha's office uninvited, Blanca?"

You clench your fists, you're starting to get real sick of being called Blanca over the past few days.

"Oh well, it's a shame." Cacuracha sighs, "You've seen the inside of my business, now you have to die. And so soon after the last one.... I'll have to tell the boys to dump your body far away this time."

"We'll see about tha-" You freeze. Literally. The muscles in your tongue go icy cold, locking in place.

"You will feel the freezing bite of my stand 『Cold Outside 』 !" Cacuracha informs you, shaking up a snow globe on his desk. "Not that you have any idea what I'm talking about. Now, to freeze your heart."

With that he violently shakes the snow globe. Amidst the flurry, you can see a tiny miniature version of yourself.

You feel it, a deep, excruciating cold in the very centre of your chest. Your blood stops pumping instantly, your skin turning blue, partly from the cold, partly from your vital systems shutting down.

Desperately, you summon 『Girl In the Fire 』 , vision dimming, numb fingers clutching at your chest.

You gasp as the searing cold in your chest is replaced with a beautiful warmth, 『Girl In the Fire 』 snapping her fingers, a brief, small fire blossoming inside you, enough to melt the ice setting in.

Pushing yourself to your knees, you throw your arms out wide, posing dramatically just for the sake of freaking him out, adrenaline kick-starting your heartbeat again, you send 『Girl In the Fire 』 forward, snatching the snow globe from his hands.

"The hell?" He screams in surprise, clambering backwards out of his chair, "G-give me that back!"

Steam bellows out of your mouth, as your stand melts the ice around your tongue, "You fucked with the wrong stand user, Papa Roach." You growl.

With a snap of her fingers, 『Girl In the Fire 』 melts half of the snow flakes in the snow globe, the liquid evaporating into steam, trapped by the plastic. Roach howls in pain, clutching his face, as burn marks pock his skin suddenly.

Howling in pain, he crawls backwards, "Stands? There is no knife!" He insists, "Not when I had it, it was an arrow. Then some hijo de puta stole it from my lock-up!" He crawls himself back up against a wall resting against it, "If there's any knife, or knives or whatever, they probably broke my god damn arrow to make them."

Wait... "Are you saying there could be more than one knife floating around?"

You kick him in the face, knocking him out cold, the snow globe in 『Girl In the Fire 』 s' hands vanishing.

You drag his heavy frame out into the hallway, then for good measure, light his doorway on fire.

The fire alarm starts to go off throughout the whole building, and you can hear steps rushing upwards on the staircase. Peeking down, you see blue caps ascending. More cops, damn it.

You force the window by the fire escape back open, forcing yourself through it, the whole frame squeaks again, and before it has the chance to collapse from under you, you call out to Xioxio below you. "Catch me!"

You vault the far railing and fall, straight down towards her.

__________

You catch Angie just in time, the whole fire escape trembling and shaking on its frame after she vaulted off it.

"Phew." She exhales loudly. "So. Raise your hands if you almost got murdered there and are currently freezing." She continues, holding a hand high. "Let's get out of here."

You set her down and grab her by the wrist, jogging off down the street, you drag her onto a passing bus before any cops can place you at the scene of the crime, as smoke starts to rise upwards.

As the bus loops back around towards your house, Angie explains everything she discovered. "Apparently, this knife you got stabbed with... it's made out of a chunk of some arrow, which used to belong to him, but it got stolen since then."

"So we're no closer then ever." You grunt.

"Well....." She starts, "He thinks there's a possibility there could be more than one. Which is- of course- just briliant for us, since I bet non of them are in the hands of anyone sane."

His boys will now come after us. Fuck.

You mind getting your hair colored, and changing up your wardrobe, so you are harder to find?

It's not a total wash. We can now use "arrow" instead of "knife" when asking questions.

His boys don't know how Stands work.

He can still send them after us. And if he had stand making arrow, I bet his lieutenants and such have stands themselves.

You shake your head, "That was dangerous setting the fire back there." You tell her.

Angie just shrugs, rubbing her hands for warmth. "Eh. At least this way, they'll be forced to take a look inside that room. And not just the cops, the fire department too. The more people who see it, the harder it is to cover up."

She has a point, you suppose. "Right.... well, I'm just glad you got out okay. Having your heart frozen.... sounds terrifying."

Angie nods, "Yeah. Hurt like all hell too." She lays a hand over her chest, "Had to think quick to get the old ticker going again before I blacked out." She shivers, moving down the bus seat to expose more of her body to the sun. "Speaking of which, scooch down. You're warm, and I need to recuperate."

You sit closer to her, Angie sighing appreciatively, as the combination of the sun and your body heat help her get back to normal.

With a sudden screeching of metal, the entire world goes upside down, then rightside up, then back down again. You instinctively grab onto the bus railing in front of you, Angie latching onto your bicep with both arms, as the bus rolls sideways, crashing through the cosmetic pillars outside the front of a mall.

"What in TARnation!?" The bus driver slurs, sounding heavily concussed inside his drivers cage.

Feeling blood trickle down your scalp, you stare through the window at what you can only guess is the source of your unexpected crash.

A bull is standing outside the window, pawing the ground, fur jet black. A glowing red aura surrounds both of it's horns.

But the worst part of all?

It's beady little hate filled eyes are locked on you and Angie.

What if he still has a little side scene to show, then the song? Like a momentary fake out ending?
