They did not come into this world from your womb, but they are yours all the same. Perhaps, one day, you will show them your face. Until that day, though, it remains hidden behind your mask.To scarce few that know of you, you are known as Daughter of the Second Star, Mother of Many, Infiltrator of Hearts, and Masked in Darkness. You are also royalty among your kind as the sole child of one of the Lords Beyond the Sky, the ancient gods that dwell in the limitless void between worlds, but you left the comfort of your P͘͝r͏̸̨ò͝ǵ̵̶̛e͏̧͡n̵͜͢͠i̶̕͞͝ţ̷ò̡ŕ̷̶͏’s inverted palace of shifting glass and the safety of its two-walled rooms.

After all, how can you grow if you remain stagnant in a place of perfect safety? Your means of reaching this world was a botched ritual intended to summon the Lady of Green Places, that she might save them from the plague currently ravaging the countryside. Instead, they got you. Lucky them.

Admittedly, you aren’t quite as powerful as the entity they intended to summon, Technically, you aren’t even the mother of any, let alone many, and your experience with twisting hearts is limited to your childhood playthings, primarily scholars driven mad by the revelations they gained in the doorless halls of the Second Star’s domain. You do have your mask, though. Much like your P͘͝r͏̸̨ò͝ǵ̵̶̛e͏̧͡n̵͜͢͠i̶̕͞͝ţ̷ò̡ŕ̷̶͏’, it renders you almost imperceptible to most forms of detection, an ability unique to your kin.

>You have arrived on the world of the Burning Veil, so named for the hellish barrier between it and all other dimensions.

>Your powers are currently Weak, and only capable of altering your own children. Your mask is the exception to this; It requires no effort to use, and it makes you impossible to find even for godlike entities. You can currently only gain children by “Adopting”, which allows you to expand your family by recruiting existing entities. Humans cost very little to adopt, dead humans cost slightly more, and animals cost nothing.

>You can alter your children to a significant degree: You may make six Minor alterations, which can be converted to major alterations at a rate of 2:1

>You are currently surrounded by twelve supplicants, three of whom are dead from a disease that has left them desiccated and reduced their bones to paste. One of those dead was a fervent worshipper of the Lady of Green Places, the only one of the humans present that would have recognized you as not being her

Is this a prompt, or is more coming?

If yes, I vote we Adopt the plague and make it benign as a reward to the mortals that opened the Way for us.

This can be our first step in getting some cultists and setting up shop here.
>>
>>40782407
Sorry if I was unclear. The current prompt is "How do you choose to manifest your form", meaning, how do you arrive now that you've been summoned.
>>
>>40782558
A black mask which appears over the face of one of the women.
>>
Giving it 15 more minutes until cutoff.
>>
>>40782181
FYI, it's handy to include a link in your tweet.

Also, sorry for not removing my own trip but It's kind of annoying if I have to switch back and forth between this and my own quest right now.
>>
>>40782558
Oh, I thought that was already established.

>High-class lady, but with inhuman features and clothes glowing like distant stars

Also, we're apparently wearing a mask. I vote for something from a masquerade ball. But somewhat eldritch.

Shadows gather as we form up from the ground surrounding them.

As the post said, this is for how you make your entrance. Your appearance was decided last thread.

I like these two.

Or perhaps what looks to be a mask, when we take it off the mask is our face, and what's behind it is a void.
>>
>>40782558
O- oh! Right. You mean how do we make our entrance?

When you asked how we manifest our form, I thought you wanted us to re-vote for what form we take.

The poor things. What kind of mother would you be if you were to ignore the plights of children, even those not yet your own? You decide that you will help your accidental summoners, or at least show yourself to them before you leave. In your home a body was an inconvenience, given the non-euclidean geometries involved in merely moving from one room to another. On this world, though, it seems that it would be awkward to remain a formless mass of curling essence when most interaction relies on physical objects. Casting your will about, you take hold of the nearby darkness and pull it to the center of the circle, shaping it into an appropriate form for an entity of your significance.

The small gathering of nearly hopeless peasantry shift warily as they catch the movement in the corners of their eyes, then begin to back away with no small amount of terror as they witness your shell rising from the pool of blackness. Your mask comes into view first, the symbol of your heritage and the reason your kin are unlikely to detect your absence any time soon. It is more a part of you than an accessory, inextricably bound to your very self.

>What does your mask look like?

As I failed to mention it earlier, votes must be linked to the prompt to be counted, and the typical cutoff will be fifteen minutes.

Like this >>40782879 but with arcane script and eldritch symbols instead of music.

It will occasionally shift in subtle ways to reflect our mood or actions.

Black. Not the mere absence of light, but the presence of a smothering, yet inviting darkness. Only the light of our 'eyes' and 'mouth' give it feature.

Your appearance does little to assuage their growing terror, though they do not flee. Perhaps they know that your darkness is not the endless howling void, but the comforting darkness of a night beneath the stars. Or perhaps they are simply frozen with terror, children that have just discovered that instead of a housecat, they were trying to put a collar on a tiger. Either way, you forgive them their misguided flinching, they way their eyes seek out avenues of escape. You came here to help, after all. But to help, you will need children.

It's the easiest way to help them out. Can we actually speak to them? That is, speak to them with words, that won't rend their sanity?

If so, we should probably tell them we're glad they opened a Way for us and will fix their plague problem in gratitude.
>>
>>40783964
Introduce yourself.

"I feel who you are, all of you. Come to me, accept me, and I will make you part of my family. I will care for you, for you will be my children. I will ease pain, tend to your sick, and keep you close."

By my count, that's 4 for Plague, three for a woman, and one for just someone that isn't sick. Unless there's an outcry, you'll be adopting the plague. What alterations would you like to make to it? Six minor changes, two of which can be traded in for a major change. Currently, the plague is transmitted by contact with infected fluids, has an extremely high fatality rate, and seems to be supernaturally resilient to attempts to cure it.

Fortunately for you, it's quite difficult to make a plague resistant to being hijacked by the daughter of a godlike master of the empty places.

>Changes: Suggest what you will. removing an existing symptom (sweating, bones softening, extreme dryness, eventual death by internal hemorrhaging due to stress on the system) will require use of a major change.
>>
>>40784391
Alter symptoms: remove death, bone softening and sweating
>>
>>40784391
Remove hemmoraging, dryness and bone softening.

Would we later on be able to change it even further? It would be a nice vehicle to spread our own "religion".

>>40784427
I'd say extreme dryness is worse than sweating.
>>
>>40784499
Second
>>
>>40784391
Remove bleeding, dryness and bone softening

>>40784391
>Changes to the plague.

>supernaturally resilient to attempts to cure it.
Nerf it's resistance so the immune system can easily defeat it. I suspect that would be a Major Change.

>transmitted by contact with infected fluids
Make out Adopted strain even more virulent and alter it to consume its un-adopted kin.
>>
>>40784391
Remove bone softening and death. Add a beneficial trait, like...enhancing the immune system somehow. Maybe by having the plague itself seek out and destroy other diseases?
>>
Interesting choices. An important detail: As a plague, this child will not be able to control who it infects unless you force it to cease reproducing and die. Similarly, it lacks sentience, and would have difficulty targeting a specific type of cell.

It will, however, automatically assimilate non adopted versions of itself, bringing them under your influence.

Is it bacterial, viral, or parasitic?

>Anti-Pandemic is a go.
>Our goal? To open Madagascar's borders!

>Cutoff, unless someone changes their mind about an existing vote.

Removing bone-softening and fatal hemorrhaging both won. Removing sweating got two votes. Objections?

>>40784810
It seems to be a bacteria, but someone's altered it with magic. You're not sure exactly how it works. Biology is hard when you haven't had to deal with conventional physics for your whole life.
>>
>>40784694
Okay, so I vote to nerf it's resistance then spend our remaining major change removing the bone softening.

The two remaining minor changes can be used to reduce the sweating and dryness.
>>
>>40784877
Remove dryness also got two votes
>>
>>40784877

The plague. Certainly, not the most comely or obedient option, but it does its best to make its new mother proud. While it remains infectious and somewhat uncomfortable for its hosts, they probably prefer just sweating to a slow and painful death sentence. You think hey do, at least. While you can easily bend the hearts of mortals to your own desires, knowing them is not yet one of your powers.

>What is, though? You have a few options for advancement to celebrate your first child.

>Awareness: You know where your children are at all times, and have insight into their motives and actions

>Plague-mother: Having adopted one disease, you find that they are more malleable in some ways than other children might be. Increased difficulty and cost to adopt non-diseases, but you are capable of adding two more Minor changes to any disease you adopt.

Control: Good children listen to their mother. Your words are very nearly impossible for your sentient children to disobey, even with assistance

awareness is just as good as control, take that. Knowing where all children are and knowing their motives is just as good as having control over them, if you're smart

Final poll before the next big writeup:

They do not know what you've done. You may adopt the unwilling, but it takes effort to twist their hearts. What will you do?

>>
>>40785748
Okay, so we can 'manipulate their hearts'.

Sooo, can we give them a feeling of relief that things will be getting better and hope that they've summoned something benevolent.

Plant the seeds of gratitude and devotion for when they all start feeling better and they realize what's happened.

As earlier stated, you cannot speak directly. You would need something or someone to act as your voice.

Of course.

We sight see for a time. Exploring their world when the sun does not ravage its surface.

I think it's exposition/world building time.

In other words, go sight seeing for a bit and see what we've got to work with here. Can't really plan much until we know what's up.

Magic is confirmed in this setting. These guys were trying to summon another Goddess, so there's a good chance others are wandering around this world somewhere.

What races live on this world? Technology lever? High magic or low fantasy? Inquiring minds want to know.
