Yesterday you vanquished the vampire snake of Castle Byrd. In the process you mastered power of the sun and melted most of the Castle. Honestly it was a pretty easy fight but even easy fights have rewards. In this case the reward was stopping a ritual to drown the world in soft bird down for a thousand years.

No wait, that's the dream you had last night. Yesterday you got into a fight with an alternate timeline version of yourself. Then after a brave advance to the rear, you recruited your auntie in talking down the night-loving menace. Then auntie stole your shiny new staff.

After you got home you found your family, sans two brothers, surprisingly still awake. Or perhaps less surprisingly since you found half of a small whale in your front yard as well. That was your first hint Mom was home and on four limbs again. The second hint was Mom being in the front yard. Which, as hints go, rather gave away the game.

Mom took the addition of a new daughter in step. Rather infuriatingly. You're sure that some of your behavior is becoming predictable but coming home with a time clone of yourself really shouldn't have been on the radar. You explained the whole story before crashing out with your family after the whale was eaten.

Now you awake, the sunrise having no respect for your late night, and ready to face the day, you suppose. You count lizards and find the older two of your brothers still gone. Min rises with you and sneaks out the window before you can ask what she's up to. This leaves you with just one lizard lump left hiding under a blanket. Which should be Koma. Mom and auntie went to sleep last and judging from the sounds in the next room, woke up first.

Entering the next room you find Mom, Auntie, and a very unhappy Koma crowded around the indoor fire pit. Koma is boiling something in a weird pot that has a very strong odor. It's vaguely familiar to you, but you've smelt many things in your short life and can't place it immediately. Auntie is snoozing while Mom stacks rocks. The fact they're auntie's rocks is somewhat mind boggling but you've seen mom's ridiculous dexterity before.

Jho and Dad have apparently taken off already. Dang, you haven't talked to Jho in a while. Or dad. Well you're not sure you've ever talked to dad.

`You open your mouth to ask Koma what she's doing up but are stoped by a glare and a raised finger. Apparently you need to give her a minute.

Luckily, mom is on hand for a chat.

"Hey," you greet her.

"Good morning," she replies, "Ready for another day breaking the rules of the world completely by accident."

You give her an affronted look. "When have I ever?"

"You brought home another you last night," she reminds you.

Ah, that explains the sleeping lump that apparently wasn't Koma.

"I didn't even do that! She existed all by herself!" You protest.

Mom nods sagely, "Sure. I understand Sunny."

You let out an angry noise before deciding it'd be easier to just change the subject. "What happened with all the crab meat?"

"Divided appropriately among everyone who helped harvest it and who helped kill it. Your portion is in the store houses for anyone to take. If you really want to charge lizards for it then I can have Kuru run a note next time she goes out."

"You wouldn't charge?"

"I ca- Well... You can't eat all that meat. It will just spoil if you keep it to yourself. Charging for it is greedy, and I doubt you have much to do with the money anyway. Giving it away will get you good will with other lizards and it will cost you nothing that wouldn't go bad anyway."

You'll have to consider that. Checking on Koma you find she's removed her weird pot from the fire, after it made a horrendous noise you chose to ignore, and has started pouring herself a cup of the smelly stuff. The liquid that comes out of the pot is nearly black and you have to wonder at the appeal as Koma blows on it before taking a long sip from her cup. She sighs happily and looks at you. Apparently ready for questions now.

"What is that?" you ask first, curious what potion could possibly keep her from grumbling about lost sleep.

Koma blinks slowly at you as she considers something. "Want to tries it?" she asks.

Against your better judgement you agree and she pours you a half cup of the smelly black brew. You sniff at it hesitantly before sipping it. Then you shudder as the hideously strong bitter flavor fills your mouth. It's possibly the worst thing you've had in your mouth since that bird you caught rolling in the mud during your enforced convalescence, which you killed and ate. You finish the half cup and the flavor doesn't get any better. This stuff could kill weak mammals.

Kuru watches you with curiosity, slowly drinking her own cup. When she sees you finish she raises the pot again. "Another?"

"Yes, please," you say, holding out your cup.

She pours another and you ask her what she's doing up so early.

"Trainings. Healers forces their students to start early because there is a lot to learn," she grumbles.

"Why would you agrees to that?" you ask bewildered.

"Once you're done trainings you get to sleep as much as you want," she says with a dreamy expression. "Unless someone gets hurt." She looks at you and seems to have some personal realization. "Please stop gettings hurt."

"I'll... tries?" you offer, slightly confused.

She nods and looks over at the bale of seaweed stuff that Kuru brought. "When are you gettings rid of that?" she asks, interrupting your thoughts of going out for a quick bask and maybe some rousing bird bloodshed breakfast

"Maybe today or tomorrow," you say, "Why?"

"It stinks."

"You were takings your sister to Gretchen's today, right?" Mom asks, "Are you goings straight to town afterward or doubling back?"

"Is it faster to goes straight from Gretchen's?"

She nods. "A little."

You think about it. "I'll have to asks Nytora. Speakings of evil twins, why does no one cares that I have an evil twin," you ask.
[1/3]
>>
>>40785085

Koma shrugs and Mom laughs quietly. "I'm not sures she's the evil one. She doesn't seem to consider killings birds quite as often as you do." Koma nods in agreement.

"But I haven't talked about birds in a long time," you say defensively.

"Twice?" Mom asks, looking at Koma who nods around, "Twice since you have come out you have thoughts about birds," she says. "You haves a look. It shows when you're thinkings about birds, and killings birds, or eatings birds. Birds in general."

You feel your face and try to twitch your tail in agitation but only get a faint aching twinge. "I do not!"

"You do," Koma says.

"No!"

"Hmm? What?" Auntie mumbles sleepily, rousing from all the noise.

"We are tellings Sunniva that she has birds on the brain," Mom says.

"Ah, that's true. Leaves the birds alone Sunny," Auntie yawns, curling back up against your Mom to finish her snooze.

You don't have to sit here and deal with these false accusations. The sun is mostly risen and you have basking you could be doing. You shuffle out of the house, ignoring the snickers behind you.

Basking has lost some of its fun since you got too big for your rock. Proper basking requires a proper basking station. Usually a rock. Luckily the roof of your house is proving serviceable. You'll need to take a day sometime soon to find a nice place to bask soon. Maybe up on the mountain. That should get you some good exposure, and plenty of rocks to choose from.

[3/3]

You watch as Koma leaves a short wile later. She waves at you as she goes, though halfway through the wave turns into a yawn. ou're not sure how she can be so tired. Just standing in the sun fills you with energy and strength. You feel like you could crush skulls in your bare claws.

Maybe you should consider gettings some bear claws. Maybe make some gloves? You're not sure what the point would be. Except making jokes. It's a silly idea but you do spend a few minutes thinking about stomping through the swamp dressed like a bear. How silly.

After a while you notice something in your yard you've never seen before. Not the whale bones, you saw those last night. Someone will have to clean those up later. The new thing is the framework for some kind of building. It's set a good distance away from the house so it took you a while to notice, but someone is definitely building something in your backyard, though with only the frame done you can't tell if it's going to be a normal house or something else. It is oddly shaped though.

You start poking around the new construction. It really is more te skeletal framework of a building at this point. As you get closer Min is sitting in the middle of it looking at a paper with scratched lines all over it. You're not sure if it's supposed to be a picture of something. It's certainly not writing in any language you know.

"Hey," you say.

"Hey," Min repeats, not looking up.

"What's this?"

"Workshop," Min replies. "Auntie saids Mom wouldn't let me make stuff in the house. Something about explosions."

"You builds explodey stuff?" you ask.

"No, but..." she stops talking, embarassed. "I may have hads an accident yesterday."

"What kind of accident?"

"...The explodey kind."

You pat her on the shoulder reassuringly. "You'll get it. I explode all the time, and I'm fine," you tell her. Don't think about your tail. Don't think about your tail. You feel a pang in your heart. DANG IT YOU WEREN'T THINKING ABOUT YOUR TAIL.

Min doens't seem to notice your momentary lapse, she's busy looking at you wish an expression somewhat close to fear. You're not sure why what you said would be scary.

"It... it doesn't really matters anyway, I can't affords the materials that explode anyway," she says, looking back down at her paper, "Have to builds my own workshop too. Though I don't know much about building buildings."

"Did you asks Mom about using the house? Maybe Auntie is wrong?"

"I guess it couldn't hurt to ask. But I kind of like the idea of my own workshop. I just don't want it to look like every other place around here," she waves a hand at her scribble paper.

You give a moment of thought to her problem.

"Maybe if you go to other places than just around here you'll gets idea for different things?" you try.

"That might works," she says, considering it, "Aren't you goings to the human town soon?"

"Yeah, but I'm goings to Gretchen's first," you tell her, "If you wants to come let me know."

She nods. You're about to walk away but you know if you did the question would burn on you all day.

"What dids you explode?"

She sighs. "Kota's workshop is next to a spot where oil comes out of the swamp. He has a pump. I may have tinkereds with his oil pump. I'm surprised you didn't notice, the explosions was really big."

"Yesterday I blew up a crab the size of a small island," you tell her.

She blinks. Then she thinks for a bit. "You win," she says, "I was wondering what that was all day. How did you manage that?"

You tell her the short version, and explain thats why you don't have a tail right now. Then you realize from her expression she hadn't even noticed your tail was missing.

"Do you wants a new one?" she asks.

"Well, Koma says it'll probably grows back," you say hesitantly.

"No, I will makes you a tail, for until your new tail grows," she says excitedly. She starts scratching pictures in the ground excitedly and you decide it's probably best you back away slowly and let her do her thing. Hopefully you own't need a fake tail. You just need your own tail to grow back faster.

You sneak back to the house and find Auntie is properly awake now.

"Nytora hasn't wokens up yet," you explain. The lump of lizard blanket is still in the other room, dozing quietly.

Auntie blinks. "She is a night lizard."

You nod. "Yes."

Auntie shakes her head. "She will probably not wake up til late in the afternoon, maybe sunset."

That... had not occured to you.

"You may want to just wake her up," Auntie says.

You consider for a moment. ON the one hand you really don't want to piss Nytora off. On the other hand you don't want to be stuck waiting around all day. Back on the other hand it's just nice not to shove people in sacks. On the other hand she did hit you with a lot of magic last night. You're actually still pretty sore about that. In all the definitions of the word. But again, you're pretty sore, you're not sure you can carry both her and the bale of seaweed.

Screw it you wanna shove someone in a sack. You ask mom where you can find it and in short order you're carefully stuffing your clone into a bag. You figure, she'll either wake up and protest, or keep sleeping. Either way your problem is solved. Despite your hopes the black star-dappled lizard fails to rouse despite the diffculty you have getting her in the bag.

Mom laughs as you drag the sack back into the main room while auntie just looks like she's given up.

"Taking the bale?" Mom asks.

You shake your head and pull the lizard over your shoulder. Your body protests, but it'll do it. If you don't get in any fights you'll probably be fine.

Auntie stops you before you leave and hands you a familiar looking crystal.

"The witch isn't a charity," she tells you, "Pay her with this."

"Is this the crystal from the staff?" you ask, surprised she'd damage the staff prying it out.

"The rest of the staff was gone when I woke up," she says with a shrug.

That's... odd. You put the glowing crystal in one of your pockets and hoist the bag of sleeping lizard into a more comfortable position.

"I'll take care of it," you tell Auntie. "Be back later!" you call back to the house as you leave.

The journey to the with's house is largely uneventful. You do have to spend more time walking the route there since swimming would probably drown your other self. Not that you're against self-murder, but you prefer it to be done in self defense.

Walking does show you a couple cool new things though. You saw a moose for the first time. You also ran away from a moose for the first time. That's how you found the moth. Or how it found you. You escaped the moose, narrowly, by hiding in a copse of closely growing white trees. While you waited for the angry mammal to pass you by, you could take him but you'd have to put down the bag, you felt a faint tickling on the back of your neck. You swatted at it, but it came back again.

Turning around you found a vaguely translucent giant moth standing on the trunk of a tree behind you, probing your neck with its proboscis.

To your dying day you will argue that your response was well reasoned, and done with all the forethought necessary for good decision making. You pretended to panic and smashed the giant bug with the first thing to hand, a sack you were carrying.

This of course woke up Nytora who immediately tore her way out of the bag, up a tree then back down the tree trailing a half dozen more of the giant moths.

"And that's why we're covereds in moth silk, and body parts," you explain to Gretchen.

"You forgot that when they hits a tender spot they drank your blood," Nytora adds, poking a scab from exactly that. She's still rather sore about the sack thing. Also about being used as an impromptu bludgeon.

"I see," Gretchen says, still looking at the two of you skeptically. "To what do I owe the honor of your visit? You need a regeneration potion for your tail?"

"No, we-" Nytora starts to speak but you clamp a hand over her mouth.

"Er, sorry," you say sheepishly to Nytora, who glares at you, "You can make a tail growing potion?"

Gretchen nods. "I can make a potion to grow most things, if I have the ingredients." She looks between you and Nytora and presses on, "I get the feeling that isn't what you originally came to me for."

You remove your hand and wave Nytora on. She gets a last pointed look in before turning and explaining her situation to the witch. She covers everything she knows and everything you brought up with auntie. When she mentions the diary you take it out and hand it off to her. Gretchen listens, looking somewhat skeptical. When you finish you show her the crystal you're supposed to pay her with and after a quick look her expression turns to one of surprise.

"Alright, well I'm not sure how much I can do or what you're expecting from me, but I'll help however I can," the witch says, flipping open the diary. "Give me an hour or so to go through this and I'll be ready to start trying to help." She waves the book and starts walking toward her house. "Feel free to hang around."

She leaves you and Nytora sitting in her lawn. The area is much the same as the last time you were here. Little house. Undoubtedly many hidden trapdoors littered around. A few nice trees and a big pond under one of them. Flowers dotting the large grassy clearing. There're a couple around the edges, sitting in the sunlight in a way that tempts you to bask.

After a moment of sitting in awkward silence with Nytora you decide to go find Aldera. You invite Nytora but she waves you off and curls up under one of the trees to nap. Finding anyone in the witch's house is a trick, what with the underground labyrinth, but the best place to start is the above ground parts.

You stick your head into the house and find Gretchen flipping through the pages of the diary, making notes as she goes. In response to your inquiry she directs you to some weird copper pipes sticking out of one wall. Apparently if you call for Aldera in them she'll hear you.

Your voice echoes in the tube and after a moment you hear confirmation from the other end that Aldera is on her way out. She appears from a trapdoor inside the house, continuing to help your belief that the ground of the entire area is just a lot of cleverly arranged trapdoors into the underground. Maybe it's a dwarf thing.

After exchanging pleasantries the two of you head outside and begin catching up. The language barrier between you, while much reduced, does still exist so part of your time is spent trying to translate each other. Your days have been signficantly more interesting than Aldera's though she does mention she ran into more of those stupid bird lizards and murdered them with a vengeance, which you congratulate her on. Before too long though both your stories are finished and you settle in to properly learn words from each other. You tried to drag Nytora into it but she remained soundly asleep when you called.

Ah well, she'll keep.
