You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the new wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful six-winged angel of the same name. Now you have come to the White Watchtower, a fortress close to the border between the Forsaken Lands and the kingdom of Iseria, to train with the crusaders so that you can protect yourself from the demons that might come after you now that the sword is in your possession.

In the lowest levels of the Red Watchtower Archives, you came face to face with Aleria, a doppelganger whom you killed long ago, and the Leviathan, a deceased Demon Lord who lives on within a belt. Rather than attack you, however, they offered to help you. You were skeptical, but accepted their help, on the condition that you inform the watchtower captains of this alliance and receive their approval. A meeting with the Knight-Captains is now being organized for after you return from the king's palace. Tomorrow, you and the others will leave for the palace, where you will be inspected by House Lione.

Breakfast passes quickly today. It seems everyone has last minute preparations to make before leaving, so everyone is in a hurry to finish eating. One by one, everyone starts to leave early, until it's just you and Ganelon left. You're just about to leave as well, when Ganelon stops you.

“Siegfried, may I have a moment?”

“Sure, what's wrong?”

“Nothing, actually. Quite the opposite. Do you remember when I told you that I felt something was wrong here?”

“Yeah, why?”

“Well I feel I should inform you that I no longer sense anything out of the ordinary. It seems it was just my imagination after all. However, I would suggest that you keep an eye out just in case.”

“Oh, well that's good. I'll keep that in mind.”

“Very good, sorry for worrying you over nothing. Oh, and before I forget, thank you for enchanting my mace. I shall put it to good use.”

With that, you get up and leave Ganelon behind. You're not sure what it was that Ganelon was sensing, maybe it was Leviathan or Zaphiel contacting you from the Void, or maybe it was something else entirely. In either case, it's probably a good thing that he can't sense it anymore.

Now, this will be your last day at the Red Watchtower until you come back from the palace. The others are busy getting ready for the trip, so you should probably finish whatever last minute preparations you need to make as well.

It occurs to me that while flying around, Galadriel could conceivably communicate using an inkwell and paper. Like mopit, only with a bigass sword for a brush.

Before heading to the king's palace, it couldn't hurt to do some more reading on House Lione. It would probably be a good idea to read up on Leviathan as well, and you could probably look at one of the books you already have about Zaphiel and the Circle of Righteousness as well.

With that in mind, you head up the stairs to the massive tower library. There are three people at the front desk today, none of which you recognize. It seems Archie's not at the front desk today.

"Can I help you?" One of the people behind the desk asks.

"Yes, do you have any books about demons or House Lione?"

"We should, yes. Give me one moment."

The bookeeper leavs the front desk and heads into the maze of shelves. A while later, he returns with a small stack of books.

"Here are a few you might be interested in." He says, laying them out on the counter.

There are four books, the first is a large tome titled "Demons: A Compendium of the Children of Malal". You notice it has the same author as "Angels: A Compendium of the Children of Aureus", which you borrowed from the White Watchtower. The second book is significantly smaller and labeled "Major battles of the Crusades". The third book is slightly larger than the last one, titled "House Lione, A Dynasty of Heroes". The final one is larger than the last two but smaller than the first, labeled "Asher: A Historian's Biography of the First Champion".

"How many am I allowed to borrow?" You ask.

"Well, according to our records, you're already borrowing one of our books, so you can borrow two of these if you want."

Well, last time didn't go so well, but what are the odds of running into her here again?

"Thank you." You tell the bookeeper, before heading for the tables. Just to be safe, you stop at the last bookshelf and peek over the side, to see if anyone is sitting there.

Thankfully, the only person you see at the tables this time is Joan, reading a very large book by herself while Berry sits in front of the book, occasionally turning the pages for her. With a sigh of relief, you step out from behind the bookshelf and take a seat next to her.

"Oh, Siegfried? What are you doing-" Berry begins, before Joan hold up a finger to her lips, signalling for the raven to be quieter. "What are you doing here?" He finishes, this time much quieter.

"Just thought I'd do some extra reading while I still can. What about you two?"

Joan lifts up the hefty tome she's reading to show you the title. "An Advanced Guide to Arcane Lore".

"Is that another spellbook?"

"Sort of." Berry answers for her. "It's an interesting read at least. I'll let you take a look once I'm done if you're interested."

"No thanks, I'm good." You tell them. The last time Joan said something was "interesting", you had to struggle to stay awake while Daniel tried to explain arcane theory to you back at the White Watchtower.

"Suit yourself." Berry says while Joan shrugs.

You lay out the two books you've just borrowed in front of you. Which should you start with?

You'll start with the book on House Lione. It won't be long until you head to the palace and meet them, after all. So, you open the book to the first page and start reading.

Most of the book covers things that noteworthy members of the house have done in the past. Apparently, they have taken part in every crusade since the third, often times as part of the Champion's honor guard. However, they have served in other positions as well, including a few instances where a member of their house became Knight-Captain of the Red Watchtower. Apparently, the house gathered enough of a reputation that they were elevated to a noble house some time during the 14th Crusade. The book also mentions that there was someone from House Lione that served on Andras' honor guard as well, though it says that he left shortly after the siege on Alastor's fortress began, due to disagreements with him. Until then, it had actually been a tradition for the members of the house to offer their service to the Champion in his honor guard, but after that the tradition was revised, where now they are no longer obligated to do so, though there is nothing stopping them from doing so if they choose to.

Sadly, there is nothing in this book pertaining to the current members of the house. Roland mentioned there were two of them, Geoffrey and Celia Lione. He said both have participated in tournament before and are undefeated, but you don't know much else about them beyond that.

By the time you finish reading, it's getting close to lunch time. You still have time to start reading your other book if you want, or you could ask the bookeeper for a different book about the House Lione, see if you can find something about Geoffrey and Celia.

You set the book about House Lione to the side, and open the book "Demons: A Compendium of the Children of Malal". You flip through the first few pages to the table of contents, which is structured in a similar way to "Angels: A Compendium of the Children of Aureus". There are chapters dedicated to each of the Demon Lords, both living and dead, and an entry on Malaphas as well, though it looks like it's the shortest chapter in the book. Beyond that, it also covers the different sort of Vices that demons are organized under, and covers some of the more common types that fall under those vices.

Lunch will be starting soon, you can probably finish reading one of the chapters before you have to leave.

>>40787972
You'll have to come back to the other entries later, but for now you flip to the section on Leviathan.

The Leviathan, the book explains, was the Demon Lord of Envy, slain by King Aurelius during the Great Crusade (supposedly). The most massive of all the Demon Lords, it is said that the Leviathan was so large that her head would rise above the clouds. Normal arrows and spears could not pierce her scales, and she had fangs and claws which could pierce even the sturdiest of armors. However, her fangs and claws were not her most dangerous weapons. Her strongest weapon was her capacity for mind-controlling magic, which many claim was on par with or even stronger than Lilith's power for mind-control. It is said that she would bend the will of the enemy crusaders, forcing them to fight amongst themselves even as her armies attacked. Any mortals that survived the battle were either put into the Farms, or hypnotized into serving her. These hypnotized mortals were placed at the front of her armies, to form a buffer between her demonic forces and the crusaders.

It was not until Aurelius himself led an attack against her stronghold in what is now part of Lilith's domain that the Leviathan was slain. However, soon after she was struck down, the armies of Malaphas were seen on the horizon, led by Malaphas with Lilith at his side. Outnumbered, the forces of Aurelius were forced to retreat. Malpahas and Aurelius would not see each other again until the battle at the fortress of Malaphas, were Malaphas was severely wounded and Aurelius was slain.

Judging by what you've read, Leviathan as she is now must be considerably weaker than she used to be. Unless, of course, she is only pretending to be weak. That is a possibility.

Next to you, Joan closes her book and Berry flies onto her shoulder. "Lunch should be starting soon." Berry squawks. "We should get going."

"Right, just give me a second to return this book." You respond, grabbing both of your books. You both start heading for the front desk, but you come to a sudden stop when you see two familiar people standing there already.

"But I heard she's usually here." Avaline says to one of the bookeepers. "Are you sure you didn't see her?"

"Like I already told you Avaline, I just came in for my shift an hour ago. If she's here, I haven't seen her." The poor bookeeper answers with a frustrated sigh.

"How could you not see her? She has a big pointy hat and a raven for Aureus sake!"

"Avaline, would you stop bothering the bookeepers already? Lunch is starting soon." Aleria complains.

"In a minute Aleria, I just need to..." Avaline trails off as she notices both of you standing by the bookshelf. "Oh, there she is!" She says excitedly, nearly running over to you.

Your first instinct is to get out of there, possibly hide in the maze of bookshelves, but she's already there before you can think think to run. However, this time she walks up to Joan instead of you.

"Hello, you must be Joan right? My name is Avaline, Avaline Bordelon. I've heard a lot about you, you think we could stop and chat for a bit?" She says, speaking so fast you can hardly keep up.

"Yeah, uh, sorry, but we were about to head to lunch actually, and-"

"Sure, I don't mind." Berry cuts you off.

"Huh?"

"Oh, good! Actually, I wanted to speak with you alone if that's alright." Avaline says, ignoring your confusion.

"Sure, that's fine. Go on Siegfried, I'll catch up." Berry says, making a shooing motion with one of his wings. Something about that mischievous smile on Joan's face is a bit concerning, but lunch will be starting soon and you'd rather not be stuck here listening to Avaline drone on again.

"Alright, sure. I'll see you at lunch then." You tell them, before splitting up with them. However, as soon as they have their backs turned, you silently whisper the incantation for Mind Link, and cast it on Joan.

'...od idea?' You hear what sounds like Berry say.

'It's fine.' You hear a new, more feminine sounding voice respond. 'Just a little joke won't...Oh, well look who it is. Looks like somebody's a little paranoid.'

'Well for good reason, from the sound of it.' You counter, already on your way to the dining hall.

'Why, I have no idea what you mean. I just thought I'd have a little chat with your biggest fan is all.' She says, feigning innocence.

'Joan, please don't say anything that'll make my life harder. She's already a pain to deal with as it is.'

'Why, I'm offended! Why would I ever say anything that would-'

You hear something, it sounds muffled but it's understandable. It sounds like Avaline's voice.

"I'm sorry to bother you, Joan was it? It's just, I needed to ask. What's you're relationship with Siegfried? Is there anyone he's particularly close to?"

'...Berry, mind translating some stuff for me?'

'Joan.' You warn.

'Sure thing, what do you want her to know?'

'Joan, whatever you're thinking, please don't-'

'Sorry Siegfried, but this is a private conversation.'

'Joan, please-'

Before you can do anything to stop it, the connection is cut off. The only one you can hear now is Galadriel, who is currently laughing at your situation.

By the time Joan gets back, you're already halfway through lunch. However, you don't see Avaline arrive with her. Joan takes a seat right next to you, sporting that same smile she had when you parted ways in the library.

"Oh, there you are Joan. Where were you?" Erika asks, oblivious to what happened in the library.

"Just had an interesting conversation with Siegfried's fan is all." Berry translates for her.

"She stopped you too?" Justine asks. "She didn't bother you too much, did she?"

"No, not at all. We had a great conversation, actually." Berry responds, while Joan starts calmly eating her lunch.

"Joan, what did you say to her?" You ask, already worried.

"Oh nothing in particular. Just had a friendly conversation is all."

"Joan, I swear to Aureus."

"No, really. We just talked a little, nothing you need to worry about."

The others look between the two of you, confused. Meanwhile, Joan continues to eat as if nothing happened, while you already start assuming the worst.

You know something is up, but you let it slide for now. You have other things to do anyways, so you just eat quickly so you can finish getting ready for the trip tomorrow. Just as you leave the dining hall, however, you nearly bump into Avaline.

"Oh, sorry." You respond, expecting her to stop you and start talking again.

"No, it's fine." She says. Something about her is off, she's not talking as fast as she usually does, and her face seems slightly red.

"Is something wrong?" You ask

"No, no, it's just, uh..." she trails off, like she doesn't know what to say.

"It's just...?"

"W-well, I had a talk with Joan and, well...I'm sorry for bothering you so much, I had no idea you were into that sort of thing."

"Huh?"

"Oh, but don't worry! I won't tell anyone!" She says, starting to talk at her normal speed again. "I'll be rooting for you from the sidelines, good luck Siegfried!"

"Wait, the Void are you talking-"

Too late, she's already left. Just as she opens the door and rushes into the dining hall, Joan exits through the same door.

"Looks like you and Avaline ran into each other." Berry says, while Joan grins ear to ear.

"What in the name of Aureus did you tell that girl?" You ask, very confused.

"Nothing major. You asked me not to make your life harder, so I made it easier instead. Aren't I a good friend?" Berry translates, while Joan chuckles inaudibly. "Anyways, I'm heading back to the library. You probably won't have to worry about her bothering you too much anymore."

"Joan, what did you say?"

"Don't worry about it." Berry says, before Joan starts heading up the stairs, leaving you very confused and very worried.

"Well we were going to leave soon anyways. Now I have to worry about Avaline telling people...whatever it was Joan told her."

"I'm sure it will be fine. Besides, you have bigger things to worry about than a young girl's gossip. It won't be long until you meet House Lione."

"Yeah, that's true. Hey, Galadriel, you mind if I ask you something?"

"What?"

"Since we'll be meeting House Lione soon, can you tell me about Asher? I figure your take is much better than history books."

Galadriel thinks for a moment. "Hm, where to start? We first met during the Great Crusade, when he was a high ranking member of the crusaders, though I did not learn much about him until after he became my Champion. He told me he came from a village in what is now Alastor's domain, before Malaphas first invaded. He was young when they invaded, and fled with the rest of his village when the demons arrived. However, he told me his brother was not fast enough to escape, and was captured along with the other villagers who did not run in time. He said that was why he became a crusader, to take back his home village and find his brother."

"Did he ever find him?"

"Yes, during the Great Crusade. He said that they had liberated a Farm close to where his village once stood, and found his brother there, still alive. He had him and the other liberated mortals sent back to the White Watchtower, where they were then sent to the Red Watchtower because the refugee camps at the White Watchtower were full."
>>
>>40792340
Or I am a faggot, that could be true too.
>>
>>40792352
"Is that why House Lione is here in Galloway then?"

"It is. Asher planned to rebuild his village after the Great Crusade, but after Malaphas defeated Aurelius, the demons quickly pushed us back to where we started, and his village was lost a second time."

"That's harsh."

"It was. Asher was determined to take it back though. When he became my Champion, the other kingdoms were hesitant to go to war again, but Asher went to each of them and appealed to their kings. He was a natural born leader, and they eventually agreed to follow him. That was when he began the second crusade, and led the crusader armies into Alastor's domain. He was an amazing warrior, and he adjusted to my powers quickly. For a while, victory seemed certain. Until he fought Alastor."

Quickly, you change the subject. "You always speak fondly about him, what was your favorite memory with him?"

Galadriel thinks. "I would have to say when Asher met Caroline."

"Who was that?"

"She was the one who became Asher's wife. She was a captive in one of Alastor's Farms, before Asher liberated it. It was priceless seeing Asher, normally a very charismatic person, start stumbling over his words whenever he spoke to her. Every time he returned to the Red Watchtower to discuss strategy with the Knight-Captains, he would find time to visit her in the refugee village she and the other survivors had set up. It always surprised me, how he would charge even the largest of demons without fear, yet lose his nerve whenever he was face to face with Caroline again. Eventually, he found the courage to ask her to marry him, with no small amount of encouragement from me."
>>
>>40792369
"So you're the one who convinced him to propose to her?"

"Indeed, and I'm glad I did. Never before have I seen someone happier than when Caroline told him she would be happy to marry him. They ended up having two sons together, one of which House Lione is descended from. They were hardly a year old when he was finally killed by Alastor..."

Galadriel grows quiet. You look over and think you see tears start to form in her eyes.

"Are you alright?" You ask, concerned.

Galadriel simply puts her helmet back on. "I am fine. Ashers death was particularly hard, but I don't think he had any regrets when he died except that he couldn't take back his birthplace. He is not here to do it himself now, so I will do what I can to do it for him."

"I'm sorry Galadriel, I didn't mean to bring back bad memories."

"No, it is fine. I often dwell on the deaths of my Champions, it is not as often that I remember the happier times I've had with them. Thank you, Siegfried."

You notice that the sun has already started to drift towards the horizon. Dinner will probably be starting soon.

"I think I should be going soon. I'm glad I could help you remember some of the happier memories you have of him though."

"Indeed, thank you Siegfried. Run along now, your friends are waiting for you by now I'm sure."

Sure enough, the others are already there when you arrive at the dining hall. The others are currently talking about the upcoming trip to the capital.

"So how big is the capital supposed to be anyways?" Erika asks.

"It's a very large city, many merchants come from Iseria and Belmore to set up shop there. There are many nobles in the city as well, since the king's palace is there." Roland answers.

"You ever been inside the palace before?" Reinhardt asks

"Oh no, I've never been inside before, that's why I'm looking forward to this trip. That and because we'll meet Geoffrey Lione as well."

"Is he famous or something?"

"Oh absolutely, everyone in Galloway has heard of him! I hear when he was earning his knighthood, he served here at the Red Watchtower for a year. They say when his squad was attacked by Scavengers, he grabbed it by the feet when it flew too close and ripped it's wings off with his bare hands."

"I find that very hard to believe." Nerillian says.

"I also find that hard to believe." Justine agrees.

"Well I for one believe it. In fact, when I was a kid, I heard that..."

Roland continues to talk about Geoffrey and his alleged feats of strength. The others in turn accuse Roland of being as bad as Avaline, an idea which he vehemently rejects.

Aww. I get the impression that the actual fight with Alastor is going to be really intense and satisfying.

Yes! Especially if Joan is there.

Asher was the one who managed to injure one of Alastor's eyes, right? Given that we managed the same feat, how do you think we actually compare to him right now?

You tease Roland along with the others, but other than that nothing of particular note is said during dinner. Once you all finish eating, you all go your own separate ways as usual. Tonight's the last night you'll be spending here until you get back from the palace, what should you do with your remaining time?

You decide to take it easy for the rest of the night and go read one of your books in your room. Once you're inside, you take off your backpack and pull out all the books you have. This time, you should read...

>"Angels: A Compendium of the Children of Aureus"
>"Entry Level Enchantment: A Beginner's Primer"

>Enchantment Improved!
>Ward Enchantment - Further increases protection from physical damage.

You are just finishing up the chapter on Ward enchantment when you hear a knock on your door. Setting your notes aside, you get up and open the door.

Outside, you find Aleria, still wearing the belt you saw Leviathan's belt change into back in the archives.

"We need to talk." Aleria says, pushing past you and into your room without asking.

"What about?" You ask, closing the door behind you. You keep a hand on Galadriel just to be safe though.

'Your trip to the palace.' Leviathan says, sounding very displeased.

"What about it?"

"The Knight-Captain here just selected the squad that's going to accompany you and the others to the palace. Unfortunately, he ended up choosing my squad."

"What?! No, you can't come with us, if House Lione finds out-"

"They won't find out." Aleria says adamantly. "It would look suspicious if we tried to change his mind, and even worse if we just didn't go. Our hands our tied."

"Leviathan, can't you use some sort of mind-control magic? Why not use that to make him change the assignment or something?"

'Unfortunately, I cannot control people for extended periods of time. He has already selected Aleria's squad, so if I were to make him change it suddenly then he would notice and we would raise suspicions.'

"Well we have to do something, this meeting is going to decide whether Galloway gives us their support in the crusade or not, we can't risk bringing you two along."

"Like I said, we don't have a choice. We're just escorts anyways, so all we have to do is show up, not draw attention to ourselves, and everything will be fine. We just have to play it safe."
>>
>>40793298
You sigh. "Great, as if this wasn't going to be hard enough."

'We just thought we should warn you ahead of time. We won't be caught, you have my word on that.'

'Because a Demon Lord's word is worth so much, after all.' Galadriel says with hostile sarcasm.

'If you don't trust my word, then trust my ability. Aleria is very skilled at blending in, and if need be I can help her with what magic I can still use.'

"That's all we wanted to tell you. Just don't act guilty and we'll get through just fine." Aleria says, already opening the door as she speaks. "Oh, and before I forget, Avaline is in my squad as well, so she'll be part of your escort as well. Have fun with that."

Without another word, Aleria closes the door behind her, leaving you alone to stress over your new predicament. You groan, get changed, and climb into bed. Now not only are you going to have to convince House Lione that you're a worthy Champion, but you're going to have to do so while hiding the fact that you're planning to work with a Demon Lord. You've thought this before, but you really hope Zaphiel and whoever the other voice from your visions was know what they're doing, because this could all go very poorly.

Alright, think I'm going to call it a night here. Next thread will be either Wednesday or Friday, probably Friday. Keep an eye on the twitter in case something changes though.

Hope you all had fun, thanks for playing. I'll stick around to answer questions as usual.

Rolled 70 (1d100)

We ought to get back at Joan. Let's bribe Berry with a jar of berries and misinterpret her for a while.

Also Avenaline seems like a character that's here to stay.

>>40793312
Seems like Joan is culling the competition. Clever little fiendling.

Thanks for the thread OP!

Mind link with Berry and bribe him when Joan is sleeping? Sounds like a plan.

>>40794809
Mind link Joan while she's sleeping and whisper things until she starts having weird dreams.

>>40794193
Joan is a prime candidate for the position. Erika isn't proactive and Justine is like a brick wall, totally unyielding. Seems like we need to develop their characters better before the chick from house Lione is introduced or we're facing too many women in the end.
>>
>>40793326
Damn. Missed the thread again.

Next thread we have to make Siegfried look good by making him train non stop.

Well he has to at least get to the level of not being inferior to those freaks in the Lione family.

Erikas training regime it is.
>>
>>40796475
Sieg doesn't really have to do anything, since the Lione family got most of that strength from Galadriel.

....which reminds me. Does that mean the Liones are part-angel? Is this just the more ethical version of "turning humans into angels"?
