Your name is Takashi Wakui. You are a sixteen-year old boy in a world where half the population possesses Personas—manifestations of inner souls as demons, spirits or deities.

Recently, a game called AETHER was forcibly installed on your smartphone. You thought it was little more than a piece of nasty spyware, but it turns out that the consequences of playing it are significantly more far-reaching than thought to be. You were transported to a realm called the Blackened Void, where you fought monsters and gained your first Persona--Ippon-Datara of the Fool Arcana.

Four years ago, you watched the final match of a fighting tournament involving the school of Akumachi City. You had been twelve, and Shizuka-nee-san had been seventeen. She was in the last year of high school and the champion of her ordinary high school. During the matchups, her opponents had sneered at her, their smiles and eyes mocking. They had laughed at the thought of Shizuka, a ruffian girl who attended a school for both Persona users and ordinary students, going up against them—lords and ladies from pure Persona-oriented academies.

Your Nee-san had proceeded to charge forward, beat every one of them and ascend the ladder all the way to the very top.

You remember the nervousness and anticipation you felt as the bell rang. Shizuka and her opponent had charged forward, opting to use Persona augmentation instead of summoning outright. Saber clashed against halberd as the two of them duelled like wolves. Blood spilt, metal clanged and sparks flew. Then it came for the real battle to begin.

Personas were called forth, and they attacked. For a while, it looked like the various magic spells were driving your sister into a corner. The tension had been so thick, it almost made you cry. Your mother had been definitely nervous. She tried to not to show it, but her heart had definitely been in turmoil. You saw her grit her teeth and sweat.

Shizuka embodied the Strength Arcana—self control, raw force, pure courage and most importantly the concept of mind over matter. She demonstrated this to the entire student mass of Akumachi City, and by extension all watching from all over Japan. She had her Persona Kali, a vicious goddess from Hindu mythology associated with death and instruction, pin her opponent’s Persona down with quadruple swords. Following, she rushed forward and locked her arms around his waist.

Her eyelids slammed open.

Then she performed a perfect gutwrench suplex on him. His back met the mat. His spine cracked. Victory was ensured. Your mother nodded approvingly and smirked, as if the outcome had never been in doubt. You, on the other hand, had cheered so loud your lungs threatened to burst, for the ‘best most awesome nee-san ever’.

And that was how Shizuka Wakui became known as the strongest fighter in her generation.

You are remembering these facts as you stand in front of your apartment door. All you have to do is enter the keycode and enter. For some reason, you can’t stop yourself shaking.

“…are you alright?” Celeste Tachibana says, staring quizzically at you.

You turn to her and speak.

>I’m just thinking of the right way to apologize.
>Nothing much, sorry.

You tell her that.

“And a real hero, you mean?” she asks. “Kids who abandon their older sisters aren’t heroes, you know.”

Ouch. She’s got a point. “That hurts, Tachibana-san.” You exclaim. “It isn’t really my fault.”

“Uh-huh.” Celeste nods her head, her level of belief matching the number on your tarot card. It isn’t twenty-two. You can’t blame her too much—she doesn’t know you spent the last three days repeatedly being knocked unconscious and running around the ruins of a long abandoned city, killing Shadows with a one-legged demon.

You take a deep breath. “Guess there’s no other choice.” You reach forward and key open the door to your apartment. It is a code consisting of all the birthdays of your family members, then scrambled around a few times. As a kid, you had a lot of trouble remembering it.

The door slides open and you enter. Celeste follows you as well, taking off her leather shoes.

Guilt strikes you like an arrow to the heart. Your sister is sitting at the dining room table. Her head is slumped over on the tabletop, nestled between her arms. She isn’t moving, apart from the quaking of her shoulders. You can hear her sobbing. It hurts, somehow more than the torture the construct of AETHER put you through. You clench your fists.

“Ah…” You begin, gulping.

Shizuka stops crying and raises her head.

“Nee-san…”

The two of you make eye contact.

You try to smile, encouragingly. “I’m back.”

“Takashi!”

You realize just how goddamned fast your older sister is. Before you can blink, she has bolted up from the table and wrapped her body around yours. Her hands are groping at your back, threatening to crack the bones there. Your face is now buried in her chest. Oxygen levels are starting to drop.

“Takashi! Takashi! This isn’t a dream. It really is you!” Shizuka wails. “Thank goodness you’re alright! I was so worried!”

>>Let her have the moment. She deserves it.

Pain fills your entering nervous system as Shizuka grips you with the force of a trained, Strength-Arcana elite Shadow Operative. The force is simply incredible. Adding to that is an experience others would term ‘marshmallow hell’. Your vision has been replaced by the front of Shizuka’s white singlet. It is very tempting to yell at her to stop.

“When I heard that Shadows attacked the Entertainment District, I was so afraid. Then you didn’t come home the next morning. My heart nearly stopped! I called all my colleagues, but none of them had seen you. I watched the news, paralysed in fear that your name would be one of the deceased…”

But, in the end, you made your beloved sister cry. You worried her to the point where she nearly broke down completely. It was unforgiveable. So, just this once, you’ll try and endure it.

>Your UNDERSTANDING has increased by 2 points!
>Your WILLPOWER has increased by 2 points!

“It’s so good to have you home, Takashi.” Shizuka continues, releasing you from the hug. You stumble back, but thankfully quickly regain your balance. “But, if you weren’t among those who died, then where have you been?”

“Um…”

“You owe me an explanation, Takashi!” Shizuka says, beginning to frown. Oh crap, she is becoming angry. Her eyes are starting to open fully. You instinctively take a step back. “Do you understand just how concerned I was? I couldn’t bear to tell Kaa-san about it...”

What an interesting question. Just how are you going to explain this to her?

Shizuka stares at you, sizing you up.

“It isn’t good to lie, Takashi.” She eventually says, gently. Yeah, you know why she responding this way. “Some things you just have to accept.”

“I’m not lying, Nee-san.” You reply. “I’m really not.”

“You don’t have to stay in denial. Tell your sister the truth.” Shizuka says. “I won’t get mad at you, I promise.”

You shake your head and concentrate. From the depths of your soul, you draw out the potential that saved your life in the Forgotten City. It is of fire and brass, taking the form of a fallen god high up in the Japanese mountains. The tarot card appears in your hand.

“Persona!”

Ippon-Datara appears in the air in front of you, his hammer idly resting in his hands. Shizuka’s eyes widen. Celeste gasps.

“This is him.” You point at the demon. “I summoned him a few days ago.” You take a deep breath and prepare yourself to lie to your sister. There is absolutely no bloody way she will believe your stories of the Blackened Void. The anomaly strikes as something only you can detect. “The stress of it kinda knocked me out for a while.”

“For three days?” Celeste asks, from behind you. You almost forgot she was there.

“Well…” You shuffle in your spot. “I’m sixteen. People like me aren’t supposed to conduct their initial summoning. Guess, I got lucky, huh?”

“This is Ippon-Datara, isn’t it?” Shizuka observes. She gives the chest of the Persona a little tap. You can hear the demon growl.

“Oh, so you’re a Hermit then, Takashi-san?” Celeste comments.

“Actually, I’m a F—”

You clamp down on your mouth before you can get the words out.

No.

NO. An entire middle school’s worth of history lessons smack into your brain in this very moment.

You must absolutely not tell anybody that you possess a Persona of the Fool Arcana. Not to your sister, not to your mother and definitely not to Tachibana-san or the rest of the world. You understand that even if your Persona was of the ‘World’, your reaction would still be the same.

If word gets out…then things will become very troubling and messy, extremely fast.

“It’s real…” Shizuka mutters. “You’ve really summoned a Persona, Takashi…”

“Better late than never, right?” You say.

“Takashi!” Your sister cries and gives you yet another bear hug. More pain shoots through your body. Déjà vu from a few minutes ago hits you with full force. This time, Shizuka’s expression is not one of relief or anger. It is of absolute joy.

“You finally did it! You’re not just an ordinary boy anymore! I’m so proud of you!” Shizuka laughs. “Quick, we must celebrate. Um, is there anything you want? Tell me and I’ll get it for you.”

“It’s been a long time since you’ve asked me that.” Shizuka remarks. “I understand why, though.”

You nod. “I think I need to learn how to use my Persona effectively. You said that marital arts could help people with stuff like that.”

And you need to learn how to survive in the Blackened Void. AETHER wasn’t going to go away anytime soon. You don’t want to be placed in that moment of weakness like back then. Not again, never again. A way to kill Shadows needed to be acquired, fast.

“Hmm…okay then! I agree.” Shizuka smiles. “But…”

She gives you a wicked smile. “Just because you’re my little brother doesn’t mean I’ll hold back. And I’ll have you take responsibility of your own training, so it means that you will have to come and seek me out, okay?”

“That sounds fine.”

“I’ll only be available on the weekends, too.” Shizuka continues. “There won’t be any time for me to train with you on weekdays. You should build up your fitness then.”

“Yeah.” You look down at yourself. Your clothes are covered with dust and dirt. Your mother would have an aneurysm if she saw you like this. “Uh, I think I better change now…be right back.”

You take two steps. Then the strength fades from your body and you collapse to the ground.

“Hey, are you okay?” Celeste exclaims.

You moan. “I just realized something…”

“What?”

“I haven’t eaten for three days.” You hang your head. “Dammit.”

At the mere mention of this, Shizuka quickly opens her tablet to a series of restaurant menus. She dials a specific one and orders food, loads of it. It is one of your favourite meals, which is…

Yes, that’s right. Bread, especially croissants, toasted sandwiches and torillas, is amazing. That’s really all there is to say on the matter. Their fine dough, the crisp crusts, the condiments that can be baked within…ever since you ate your first bagel as a kid you’ve been hooked. It is quite possibly one of the most un-Japanese meals ever, but you don’t care.

If there is a world out there where French food isn’t readily available in the National Empire of Japan, you don’t want to live in it.

The delivery boy arrives within minutes, bringing cardboard boxes stuff to the brim with donuts, croissants, sandwiches and tortilla wraps. Devouring and mass consumption is immediate. You stuff your mouth full of carbohydrates and wash them down with the complementary chicken soup. The amount of food you eat could feed a starving African family for a week. The taste is so delicious it makes you shed a single tear of joy. You are so glad to be alive, and not murdered by Shadows for that matter.

>Your CHARISMA has increased by 2 points! You will gain a +1 bonus to all CHARISMA gains from now on.

“Thanks for the free lunch, Shizuka-san.” Celeste has stayed behind. She accepts a bowl of soup with grace. “Wow, this is great.”

“I know, right?” You mumble through a mouth of ham and cheese croissant.

That's assuming that we get even opportunities to raise our stats. If, say, we can get Charisma frequently but rarely get choices that raise our Willpower, it's better to split our gains.

“I feel enlightened. Is this what religious people feel? I’m glad I won’t be essentially handicapped for the rest of my life.” You answer. “Kinda hungry, too. The summoning knocked me out for three days.”

“Hey, that’s xenophobic, yo.” Another of Shizuka’s colleagues giggles, this one a short woman with auburn hair. You think her name is Tsugumi or something. “Be careful what you say, Takashi-kun. The ordinaries might get pissed off…”

“Sorry.”

“But man, I know what you’re talking about. Summoning your Persona feels sooo good.” Tsugumi continues, taking a swig of gin and breathing deeply. “It’s, like, all the pleasures of the world shoved into your body in an instant.”

“I wouldn’t go that far…” You mutter, although she conceded that she had a point.

“You got really lucky, Takashi-kun.” The violet-hair BDSM woman remarks. You remember her name is Viola. “The world record for latest initial summoning is at seventeen years old. We actually bet on when yours would happen.”

“And now everybody in the squad owes me two thousand Macca! Gahaha!” A black-haired dude with bulging muscles and his shirt off grins. You know his name. It’s Daisuke. He drew with Shizuka in combat once in a tense and unforgiving match. “So tell me kid, who’s this pretty lady over here?”

“Me?” Celeste asks, pointing to herself.

“Is she your girlfriend, kiddo?” Daisuke smirks.

“No.” you flatly say.

“Nope.” Celeste says, not even bothering to take her eyes of her croissant.

The little impromptu party continues. All the adults get wasted with the exception of Viola, who appears to be the oldest of them. You finally reach the point where your stomach begins to feel full. After slurping down a gigantic bowl of soup, you are just about to stand up from the table when Daisuke motions you.

“Hey Takashi.” He says, his face flushed.

“What is it?”

Daisuke pours some reddish liquid into a glass and gives it to you. “Drink this.”

You sniff the drink apprehensively. “Is this alcohol?”

“Yep! Give it a shot!”

“Hey Dai! Cut that shit out!” Shizuka complains, also looking like she’s drank a few too much. “Don’t bully my cute little brother…” She then hiccups.

“It’ll be fine, Shizuka.” Daisuke laughs, a booming sound. “Takashi can handle it. He’s practically an adult now, since he’s got his Persona.”

You eye the drink again. It’s fire-red and bubbling gently.

“Sorry about this.” You mutter as you pour some of the hellfire and brimstone colored drink into Celeste’s glass. The liquid looks like it belongs in Satan’s brewery.

“It’s okay.” The girl sitting next to you smiles. “I’m curious about the taste, you know.”

“I feel like that if I drink this alone, I’ll end up in a back-alley with both my kidneys harvested.”

“So, on the count of three then?” Celeste asks.

You nod. Celeste does the same.

“Okay then. 1…”

“2…”

“…3!” The two of you raise your glasses and chug down the drink in an instant. The adults, Daisuke in particular, watch with eager anticipation. For a brief moment, nothing happens. You and Celeste stare at each other, expressions blank.

Then the burning begins.

“HOOOOOT!!”

Your throat has been doused in petrol and set aflame. A thousand litres of chilli sauce making their way down your oesophagus, scalding every inch. The great Norse god Surt has been offended by your tongue and is making his displeasure known in the most extreme way possible. You and Celeste scream and dash for the kitchen. Celeste makes her way to sink and sticks her mouth under the tap. You throw open the freezer doors and shovel ice cubes in your mouth like candy.

“Ha! Told you he wouldn’t make it!” Tsugumi roars. “Mada’s Whiskey is way too spicy for kids like them!”

“You lot…” Viola sighs.

Five minutes later, the agony has faded from your mouth a little.

“Well, that was something.” You state.

“Please don’t make do that again.” Celeste moans, her mouth wet like a marsh.

>Your WILLPOWER has increased by 2 points!
>You feel freezing and hot at the same time, though…
>>
Everything has to end, and soon it’s time for Shizkua’s squad to head home. Viola, who is the only adult in the room who not to drink enough to cause imminent liver failure, props up her friends and moves towards the exit.

“See you, Takashi-kun.” She says. “I better get this lot home before they throw up on your couch.”

“Hey, just because that happened the last three times doesn’t mean it will happen today!” Tsugumi replies, a lopsided grin on her face.

“Later, then.” You remark. “Drive safely.”

Viola smiles faintly. “Don’t worry about me. Make sure your sister gets plenty of rest. She’s got the rest of this week off, after all.”

Yeah, that makes sense. Shizuka is the kind of person who would drop everything for a family emergency. In your face, it was an extremely noteworthy and urgent one. Besides, not even someone as strong as her could fight off the horrors of sleep deprivation.

“Okay, we’re going now.” With that, Shizuka’s colleagues exit the apartment door and leave.

You turn around and see Shizuka and Celeste walk forward to the door.

“Hey Takashi.” Shizuka yawns. “See Celeste-chan off, would you. I’d do it myself, but I’m feeling really sleepy…”

“It’s fine, it’s fine!” Celeste remarks. “You don’t have to do this for me?”

“Nope, we have to. We’re a well-mannered family, the Wakui’s are.” Shizuka responds. “Go on, Takashi. Be the gentleman.”

You shrug. “Sure, why not?”

“Thank you. Have fun together!”

That is how you and Celeste end up walking side by side towards the apartment stairs. It’s not a far walk, mind you. Still, it would be nice to have some conversation…

>>[INTELLIGENCE] Ask her about the Forgotten City

It can’t be a coincidence that Celeste happened to greet you the moment you stepped out of the Blackened Void, right? Maybe you’re just being paranoid. AETHER is a mystery upon mysteries, an anomaly among anomalies. Any more information regarding it would be useful. Still, you can’t just ask her about the game outright. Need to be a little more subtle regarding it.

You take out your phone and open up the AETHER application.

“Hey Celeste.”

“Hm?”

“Check this out.” You shove the screen in her face. She studies it for a moment.

“That a nice wallpaper you got there.” Celeste remarks.

“I know. The Ubuntu default ones are the best.” You follow up. So Celeste can’t see AETHER at all? Guess she doesn’t have anything to do with the game. You wouldn’t want her to get gooey blue stuff injected into her heart and then tortured into unconsciousness.

>>What are you going to do for the rest of the break?

“Me? Not much, really.” Celeste admits. “There’s a lot of paperwork I have to fill out by myself. I’m transferring to an all-Persona school this year.”

“Oh, are you a Persona user too?” You ask. Man, that sounds weird coming out of your mouth.

“Can’t you tell? Well, you’ve only just got your Persona…” Celeste says. “Persona users are often said to be drawn to each other.”

“Like the way we are?”

“Eh…not really.” Celeste murmurs. “After I get everything sorted out. I guess I’ll hang around the city for the rest of the days. I should get familiar with Akumachi, I’m going to be living here until I graduate after all.”

The two of you begin to climb up the stairs.

“Maybe we could.” Celeste remarks. “You can take me to all the good stores!”

“You’re one of those types, then?”

“The kind that likes eating cakes and sweets all day long?” Celeste says with a big smile. “Definitely!”

You were thinking about shopping for clothes and stuff like that, but whatever.

>>Ask about her Persona.

“My Persona…oh, I never did show you mine. I did see yours, so I guess I have to do it.” Celeste flexes her fingers, drawing the tarot card from the sea of her soul. Two eyes and two hands are depicted on the front, cradling a fire between them. An infinity symbol floats above and the number one is inscribed on the bottom. Celeste grins and crushes the card in her hand.

Orange flames and ethereal cobalt aura gather in the air, creating the outline of a woman clothed in black. There is fire trailing around her form and a veil covers her mouth from the world. You see is wearing copper bands on her body and a small crown perched on black hair.

“My Arcana is the Magician, and this is my Persona. Her name is Sati.” Celeste states. “She a reborn goddess from Hindu mythology. I got her when I was eleven.”

“That long ago, huh?” You say. “Does that mean you’re stronger than me?”

“Probably! Persona summoners grow as they use them.” Celeste giggles. “All Sati can do is shoot fire and heal me a bit, though.”

You both continue to walk. Celeste retracts her Persona.

“So, what’s the deal with those friends of Shizuka-san’s?”

“They’re her work colleagues in the Anti-Shadow Operatives. They work at night, killing Shadows around the city borders.”

“You seemed to be familiar with them.”

“All of them were nee-san’s classmates at school. They often came around to visit a lot.” You sigh. “They’re loud as hell, but good people.”
>>
You reach your destination.

“Well, I suppose I’ll see you around.” Celeste says, standing in front of her own door access panel and keying in the number. She’s obscuring it with her hand to prevent you from seeing.

“Yeah. We’ll bump into each other a lot, most likely.”

“I had fun today!” Celeste remarks. “Apart from that alcohol of course.” You see her shudder at the mere thought of it. You can’t blame her. “Still, it was nice to meet your sister and have lunch. You’re not such a bad guy, either.”

“Gee, thanks.” You say, half-jokingly.

“Hee hee.” Celeste’s door slides open. “I might swing around your apartment some day, ask you to show me around the city.”

You cross your arms and give her a confident smirk. “Maybe I’ll take you up on that.”

Celeste nods, and smiles. “Alright, then. See you later, Takashi-san!”

She enters her home and closes the door. You turn around and head back in the opposite direction. That felt good, talking to a kid your age. It wasn’t often you got to do that. Ever since you received the news that your potential for Persona summoning was practically nil, you had withdrawn from the world, opting to spend your time lonesome.

You did mean what you said. It could be fun to hang out with Celeste.

Suddenly, a voice rings in your head.

The room is dark. The air is cold. Only a few candle prevent you from being overwhelmed by the blackness. You blink, trying to shrug off the haze that echoes through your mind. You’ve been here before.

“Oh, look who came in.” A male voice says, the smugness dripping off it like honey.

“I said he would be back, nii-san!” A female cries. “Look what happened.”

“Of course he would return.” The boy smirks. “Only a loser would drop out so easily.”

“Ehh? Didn’t you use that term to describe this kid?” The girl looks shocked, or rather that’s the only thing you can tell from her silhouette.

“When compared to his predecessors, yeah.” The boy shifts in his seat and gazes at you. The Velvet Room, as you can remember, is still is disarray. What you can make out is a complete mess. The area has been brightened slightly, and you detect blue eyes staring at you. “Welcome back to the Velvet Room, kid. Did you enjoy the last couple of days?”

“We sure did!” The girl cries. Her eyes are red. “It was really interesting, watching you flay around and awaken to your Persona!”

“As you might have already guessed, your Arcana has shifted.” The boy says. “The path of introspection and solitude has been locked off to you. It has been supplanted by one of chaos, creativity and utter freedom. You are no longer a Hermit, you are now the Fool.”

“Just like the last four that came before you.” The girl remarks.

“You possess what is known as the Wild Card. It is the power to utilize multiple Personas within your life and switch freely between them at your command. Bonds are now your strength; use them carefully. There’s a catch, though.” The boy then raises his finger, and you catch a glimpse of pearl-white teeth. “Can you guess what it is?”

You barely have time to respond before the girl jumps up. “It’s that you’re so weak! Weaker than the Great Seal, Myriad Truths and the Phantom Thief! You pale in comparison to your predecessor—the Last Word! Nii-san and I have never met a Fool so utterly puny. You are so pathetic it’s hilarious!” The girl begins to laugh, cackling and shrieking. Her voice bounces off the walls. Your hands curl into fists.

“She’s right.” The boy leers. “The anomaly occurring in your word? The past Fools could have solved that problem in thrice less time. You, on the other hand, will just have to struggle. Persona Fusion, and all techniques associated with it, is locked out to you. Your soul simply couldn’t handle the pressure.”

“Isn’t that because we don’t have the necessary tools for that?” the girl questions.

“Partly, my dear little sister. Of course kid, you don’t have to stay that way. Maybe if you get stronger, we’ll consider it…”

“I doubt it!” The girl giggles.

“The current you can only hold up to three different Personas at a time, including the one called Ippon-Datara.” The boy continues. “In comparison, the Great Seal could wield eight Personas in the beginning of his journey. Perhaps your capacity will increase as you grow and gain experience.”

“You know, the world you are in is a really interesting one.” The girl remarks. “A world where half the humans can use Personas. I bet neither Butterfly Man nor Mr Black Alien Faces predicted this would happen.”

“Even more interesting is the fact that the last Fool appeared in his home country around seventy years ago.”

“Then she disappeared in the next ten, and there hasn’t been a Fool or a World ever since. A sixty year gap of nothingness! Not in the land of the beasts, not in the country of the stars and stripes, not in the domain of the red and definitely not in this Fool’s own home.” The girl says. “Hold on? What would happen if he were to reveal his status as a Fool?”

“Why, my dear little sister.” The boy acknowledges. “He would be hunted down and dissected within the week. Failing that, his privacy would go up in flames. His life would practically be over.”

“That’s horrible! But at the same time, I want it to happen!”

“We’ll just have to see, won’t we?”

“Indeed, nii-san!”

“Okay, we’ve taken up enough of your time. Hey kid. We have a gift for you.” The boy tosses something at you and you catch it easily. It’s an old-fashioned key glowing with pale blue light. “Find the door this key fits into, then come and talk to us.”

“See you later, Weakest One!” The girl chirps. “Try your hardest against the loaded game!”

Your eyes sink shut, and you fade into unconsciousness…

I vote we never come talk to them ever again, just out of spite.

...oh. We suck utter ass and need to get stronger. Yay. WELP! Time to start grinding experience like this was WOW

I hate these fucking kids so much.

Why did we have to get stuck with the little cheeky dickwaffle kids instead of Igor? Igor was cool!

That's a running theme in games like this. The powers that be hate you, and not only do they love to let you know it, but they're immensely petty abou it.

Takashi did kinda get forced into turning into a Fool. Blue syringe and all.

No wonder he's weak. He's an artificial Fool.

Why would it be a bad idea? They won't offer Fusion, they don't give helpful advice and instead just mock us, and I doubt they even have the Persona Compendium. Let's just forget about them.

>>40791834
Yeah, but their dialogue implies that they're not the powers that be. Just the metaphysical equivalent of two punk kids who found the keys to an old version of the Velvet Room.

Nothing for now. We'll have to git gud first without their help.

The worst damage they've done so far is shittalking Takashi, at least.
>>
>>40791952
>>40791978
Here's the thing, though: Ignoring them is the best way for us to get stronger. We've had the Arcana of Fool forced upon us, and so we're weak. if we're going to get strong, we need to embrace our new role. The Fool symbolizes seeking your own path, even if it leads you off the edge of a cliff. Doing this our way and spiting them should only strengthen our tie to the Arcana.

[7:30, 1-Apr-2129]

It’s Friday. There are only four whole days until school resumes next Tuesday. The thought of it is rather sobering. You’re done all the necessary homework, so the sense of dread in your stomach is lessened. Even so, you are definitely not anticipating the next semester of homework, exams and shitty cafeteria food.

Although, now that you have access to a Persona, what’s gonna happen to your future? You are no longer an ordinary. You can summon a one-legged blacksmith with a hammer to spare and fire breathing out of its hands. There’s probably a procedure involved with kids gaining their Personas for the first time. You’ve never really paid much attention to that sort of stuff, despite every other member of family possessing the potential.

Your phone is calling you. You look up from your breakfast of rice and inspect it. It is AETHER again? The application has been mysteriously quiet for the past day. You have a suspicion that whatever divine forces controlling it are biding their time, waiting for the right moment to send your world spiralling into complete chaos.

Nope, it’s just a video call. You know who this person is. You would be considered a brain-dead idiot if you didn’t.

“Good morning, Takashi.” The woman on the other line says.

You stare at the navy blue hair, those piercing eyes and business suit she is dressed in.

“Hello, kaa-san.”
>>
>>40791972
To be fair, gas station attendant didn't look like BBEG either.
>>
>>40792076
Gas station attendant was a god in disguise.
Unless our sister is something seriously powerful, shes probably just a social link. especially if we've gone hermit for a while, we may be out of touch.
>>

W-will you love me now, mom?
>>
As always, your mother Rumi Wakui studies you critically. It’s unnerving. You notice that she is sitting in the lobby of a hotel. Behind her is a night sky, apparently from the other side of the world. This is the matriarch of your family, the one who earns the most money.

“How have you been?” she asks.

“Alright, I guess.” You reply.

“Shizuka said that you managed to summon your Persona.” Your mother says. “Show me it.”

You comply. Ippon-Datara appears in a mass of blueness.

“As expected of a child with the Hermit Arcana.” Your mother nods slightly. “It would be troubling if my only son failed to uncover his true potential. That is a demon weak to light, correct? You should train yourself to rid yourself of that weakness.”

She wants you to take up chi casting, you guess. Your mother had been a star back in her own school days. Now that you think about it, all the women in the Wakui family had been freakishly strong at some point…

“Is something up, kaasan?” You ask.
>>
“Why else would I call you?” Your mother says, looking slightly annoyed. “As you have now summoned your Persona, your studies will have to change.”

“Say what?”

“You are not an ordinary boy anymore. So you no longer need to be in your current school.” Your mother takes open a brochure and holds it up to her screen. “Starting from this term, you will be studying at the Akumachi-Kirjio Academy for the Supernaturally Talented. It is a school where every student and teacher wields a Persona.”

“That’s the academy you attended…” You mutter.

“I will not repeat Shizuka’s circumstances. She was...different.” Your older sister didn’t want to leave her primary school friends behind, so she challenged your mother to a bet. If she won, she could go to whatever middle school she wanted. Obviously, Shizuka emerged victorious. “This is your chance for you to start with a clean slate.”

You shrug your shoulders. “Okay then. It’s not like I was particularly attached to my old school anyway. I only went there because Nee-san went there.”

Your mother nods. “Good. Because all of the paperwork has already been filled out. The moment Shizuka contacted me, I began to work. You’ll also find that your Persona license has already been activated and brought up to speed.”

“Hey…” Your mother was pulling strings in the background again, like a puppeteer.

“I expect you to visit the Academy grounds today. You have free time, yes? Make use of it.”
>>
Looks like you weren’t about to spend your morning and afternoon bumming around the house. You try not to sigh.

“Okay, kaasan.”

“One last thing, Takashi.”

“Hmm?”

Your mother takes a deep breath. “When the doctors told me that you were one of the unlucky few without the potential, I refused to believe them. I continued to hold that thought up until today. Thank you proving me correct.”

She gives you a small, yet gentle smile. “I am proud of you, Takashi.”

“…thank you, kaasan.”

With that, she hangs up.

That's fine. Thanks for running, Thorn. It was fun. See you Thursday.
>>
>>40792308
It's been drilled in that those without Personas - in a world where at least half the population has a Persona - are effectively second-class citizens. To not have a Persona is to be useless and worthless.
>>
>>40792314
Thanks for running!
>>
>>40792342
That doesn't mean that she thought of us as worthless. Why you got to make this something passive-aggressive? Why can't it just be "I thought my son would suffer with this condition all his life, holding him back from showing the worth I know he has, I'm so happy to see it won't effect him any longer"? Because she's somewhat domineering and wants the best for us? Sure, it's annoying, but it doesn't mean she doesn't love us.
>>
>>40792342
Even that Jerkface Duo in the Velvet Room were surprised with how the world adapted to Personas.
>>
>>40792372
its mostly the word choice that makes it seem like rather than being happy for us, she's happy that we aren't a failure
>>
>>40792413
The implication I'm getting from it is more that she's the sort of person to have trouble expressing their emotions. That she genuinely is happy for us, it's just that this is the only way she has to show it. That bit at the end where she has to steady herself before she can say something genuine is what gives me that sense. She loves us, she's just really bad at showing it.
>>
>>40792372
>>40792413
She's an adherent to the "tough love" style of parenting, I guess.
Hey, wasn't Celeste supposed to go to an exclusive school too?

Hey Twilight, what's the public opinion on Wild Cards? Are they pariahs like Fools?

Do they even exist nowadays? Besides Takashi anyway.
>>
>>40792627
The public thinks Wild Card = Fool. The protagonists of Persona 1 and 2 had the power to switch between multiple Personas but this wasn't explicitly named as the Wild Card, though.
