You've gathered quite a crowd by the time the elder with the long white beard makes his way over to you. He is the only man amongst the tribe that has forgone the wearing of a turban, his curly hair serving practically the same purpose. You can't even see his mouth in the bird's nest draping from his jaw. He wears the same white robe as the rest of his kin, though his seems to have been torn and mended a number of times. The fabric is nonetheless fine silk.

He walks with the assistance of a staff topped with a blue gem, which seems bound to the wood of the staff by vines wrapped around the top. To give an estimate of his age would be difficult, but he is not yet bald so you would estimate his age to be somewhere in the neighborhood of seven to eight hundred years old. Only once reaching their thousandth year do Samjan begin to lose their hair, baring a few outliers.

He converses briefly with the leader of the patrolmen. Something about him being too old, you imagine it was a joke of some sort based on the nervous smile he gets out of the patrolman. Their pronunciation is so odd, it's as if you recognize that everything their saying is Samjan, it all sounds very distinctively like words you should be able to understand and yet you can't grasp their meaning. It's gibberish, save for certain brief snippets you can actually recognize.

The old man turns towards you, eyeing the corpse of the young dragon you currently cradle in your arms with a certain hesitant curiosity. As if he still half expects it to attack him. He starts speaking, but stops and clears his throat. Finally he says something in your own dialect, surprisingly unaccented. “It is you who did this, killed a messenger?”

>Yes, that's right. You killed it.
>No, you found it like this. Laying in a field. Yeah, that's it.
>Well, technically it was killed by a gargoyle, but then you killed the gargoyle. Thus you killed it by proxy.

You'd shrug your shoulders if you weren't currently occupied holding up this corpse. You shoulders are really starting to ache, since you've been holding this thing for a solid ten or so minutes now. “Technically it was killed by a gargoyle. However, I killed the gargoyle and so in a way killed it by proxy.”

A murmur of confusion runs through the crowd, silenced when the old man speaks. “This 'gargoyle' you speak of, what is it? We have never encountered such things in our ranging, neither in the far east nor the distant south.”

You glance around you, shoving the dragon corpse towards the nearest warrior whilst mumbling. “Hold this, would you?” The poor man practically falls over himself trying to catch the beast's corpse as you let go, turning your attention to your cloak. With some difficulty you manage to extract the severed head of the gargoyle, its massive horns sprouting from its head and neck, like branches from a tree. The bases of its largest pair are probably twice as thick as your thigh.

As the trophy is revealed, a collective gasp issues from the gathered villagers. You let it drop to the ground with a heavy thud, kicking up sand. “This is a gargoyle, or the head of the gargoyle at least. I have the rest stored within my cloak, but I'm bringing it back to El-Amin with me for study. You understand, I'm sure.”

(1/2)
>>
The leader of the patrol which spotted you leans in and says something to the old man, to which the elder nods before addressing you. “We will accept this kill 'by proxy', in your words. Think me not a fool, outlander. I realize you must be very confused by all this.” Honestly this probably isn't even the weirdest thing to happen to you today. “If you'll allow me, I shall explain.”

You gesture for him to go on, and the old man adopts a tone of authority, as if recounting some ancient Imperial mandate. “Let it be known that amongst the tribes of the Suteimi it is an ancient right of passage that a man who seeks to join the Parbau must first slay a on of the Old God's messengers. Since you have presented yourself, and delivered us a corpse, you have inadvertently satisfied the requirements of this most ancient right. Only the third in living memory to do so.”

The Suteimi, so far as you're aware, are a tribal confederation which makes its home along the far eastern edge of the Pa'vala. They're pastorialist, relying on primarily upon camels for their sustenance. Why has this tribe traveled so far north? More than that, what on Earth is a Parbau? Also, who were the other two men to kill dragons?

Thing is, it's much easier to survive in a jungle than a desert, and once we get the compass from Hayes, navigating the desert shouldn't be a problem, as opposed to now where we have barely any clues as to where it is.
>>
>>40801817
You know what? Fuck you and your attempt to reword a very simple factual statement. Yes.

>>40801903
Yes.

Basically, the plan is to go to Eludia first since it should be easier to survive in, we have a nature GM, and wandering aimlessly through a desert of death is probably a worse idea than the mask. Once we get the eludian steel recipe and give it to Hayes, we'll get a compass that should point us towards the artifact we need from the Pa'vala, thus reducing significantly the risks of navigating it.

Ring of Heart's Desire Mission
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/30903026/images/1395113439615.jpg
“Well that's all well and good, but I'm going to need some details before I jump blindly into this.” Hayes scratches his head. “Well shoot, yah ask for details on a job but not when yourshovin' magical artifacts onto your face? You're a weird one, you are.” You shrug, and he continues. “Well, listen. Hayes hears things, y'know. Shoot, how couldn't he with a whole mess of magical artifacts to play with? Anyway, Hayes caught word that someone figured out how to make ol' Elaudian Steel. Strongest stuff the world's ever been graced with. Made blades sharper an' lighter than anythin' you ever seen. Just as sturdy as traditional iron or steel though.”
“Hayes wants you to head into that gods forsaken jungle and get him that recipe. Now, it don't have to be tomorrow or next week. Hell, it don't even have to be next month, or the month after. Jus' as soon as you get that recipe, Hayes wants first dibs. Y'hear?”

>Anyway, Hayes caught word that someone figured out how to make ol' Elaudian Steel.

Petty insults from an annoyed anon aside, the Elaudian mission is actually much easier. Someone already figured out the recipe for us. We just have to find the guy and mindrape/earn the recipe.

No one is saying it's safe, we're saying it's easier than the desert. Also, if we go to the desert first we don't get anything to benefit us when we go to Eludia, while if we go to the jungle first, we get the compass that's going to help us with that. Thus, if we go the Pa'vala first, we get two hard missions, while if we go to Eludia first, we get a hard mission and a slightly easier mission.
>>
>>40802002
>>40802020
You know what's an even worse idea? Going into the Pa'vala without the compass, or an some sort of aerial transport. All of which the Elaudia can help with, in either wood, Elaudian steel, or the compass ring. Think before you speak kids.

>>
>>40802113
The agreement was for her to live at our place, not that she'd just stay there. We can probably persuade her with our oratory skills. We also have a friend who's trying to become a Nature GM.

Everyone knows magic doesn't exist, faglord.

Ooooh, a photoshopped picture of an anime girl. You sure told me. Have you numbnuts considered we're an assload more powerful than we were the time we put on the mask? That we have mental and spiritual fortification out of the wazoo and can reinforce our soul with metal magic techniques? I reiterate, in plainer language, so that my point can be made in clear duplicate.

Before talky talky, try thinky thinky.

>Conjecture.
Not really, it's based on things we know from threads and Soma's ask. The desert has no water in it, thus we get a malus to water magic, we need to create our own water, the sun can kill us if we're exposed to it too much, gignormous fucking worms wander around it eating anything it senses through vibrations, tribes that could attack us, shitloads of other deep desert monsters that are going to be there, there was another thing I can't remember that's really dangerous, and some other stuff. While the jungle pretty much just has scary monsters and some natives. Also, we don't even know where the artifact we're looking for is, nor if there are people who do, while in Eludia we know there are people who can tell us the recipe.
>She's staying at home. Adventuring life ain't for her, she said.
Yeah, fuck that, we're dragging her with us if we have to, though we shouldn't have to, since it's a jungle filled with all the things she loves and she basically owes us for a bunch of things.

Hunger knots in your gut, pain shooting briefly through your abdomen to remind yourself that you've yet to eat today. Though you certainly have your questions, the desire for food momentarily wins out over your curiosity. “That's all well and good, but might we discuss this over a meal? The smell of those ribs is driving me mad.”

Six minutes later you're sitting on a large woven blanket with the elder and three others you presume to be part of the tribe's leadership. Most of these tribes are ruled by a council headed by the oldest surviving member of the tribe and a few officials elected to represent various members of the tribe, like the craftsmen or warriors.

To your left is a man dressed head to toe in deep blue. His robes, his turban, and even his shoes have been died indigo. To your left a a far younger man, at least in comparison to the others. He wears the same white robe as the Elder and most of the other tribesmen, but wields a staff carved from base to tip in glowing runes. Sitting directly opposite you are the elder who came to greet you and a woman who's probably nearly as old as the elder. She wears all manner of jewelry and her robes are uncharacteristically decorated, died in shades of red and green and gold. She, too has forgone the turbans worn by the vast majority of tribesmen.

In the center of the little gathering is a clay plate stacked high with lamb ribs. You're currently trying to stuff your face while warding off one the children of the tribe, who insist upon attempting to 'beat you up'. Beating you up seems to mostly consist of trying to climb on your shoulders, for some unknown reason. The child's brother is currently clinging to the old woman's arm, asking her for something or other. You haven't actually gotten to discuss what being a 'parbau' entails or why they've traveled so far north, you've mostly just been enjoying the meal.

>>
>>40803416
I actually, seriously blame Soma for the creation of that shithole.
>>
>>40803416
Two posts, four hours. Slower than hexer. This is shit.
>>
Eventually the old woman snaps her fingers and calls over the boy climbing on you. He huffs, letting go of your robes and running around the gathering to join his brother. The old woman says something in their dialect, you catch 'mother', and the boys run off towards a woman who's currently occupied at one of the fire pits cooking.

Once they're out of earshot you conjure some water from the air, no easy task in this desert though you manage well enough, and wipe off your mouth before letting it dissipate again. “So, what exactly does it mean to be a 'Parbau'? What responsibilities does it bring?”

The elder speaks. “Parbau has many meanings. Roughly translated, it would be akin to 'Elite', but that term does not encompass all of its parts. To be Parbau is to be amongst the most respected of our people. Even the Elders must heed their word. It is said that once, before the Messengers raised the mountains from the sands and hid themselves within, that the Parbau formed a ruling council which led our people in greatness. Unfortunately as memory of the Messengers faded we were left to wander without purpose, and our people fractured into many smaller tribes vying for land and wealth.”

While certainly interesting, that didn't actually answer your question. “So what would be expected of me, as a Parbau? Would I be the ruler of your people? Expected to preside over meetings, or some such? Simply honored as particularly skilled? How would my status as Parbau be known to other members of your tribe?”

The elder sighs, a hint of weariness entering his tone. “The Suteimi are shattered, uniting them seems an impossibility. Your responsibilities would thus be minimal. As would your privileges. Among my tribe, your word would carry immense weight. My people would hold you up as an example for children and warriors to emulate. However, outside of my tribe you would likely be met with skepticism at best, or hostility at worst.”

“Traditionally Parbau were marked upon the hands. The bones of the Messenger they killed were charred black and crushed into a fine powder, which when properly mixed creates a dark red ink. Symbols were then drawn on their flesh with a needle and thread, which were said to grant them power.”

Sounds to you like a rudimentary form of enchanting, performed upon one's self. You find it curios that a dragon's bones, once charred black and ground up, made not a black ink but a red. Perhaps they mix something else in with the powdered dragon bone?

You retrieve another rib from the pile, tearing off a chunk of wonderfully tender meat and chewing contemplatively, savoring the richness while your thoughts wander. After you've swallowed, a question occurs to you. “Why are you this far north to begin with? Is not your homeland on the eastern edge of the Pa'vala?” You'd guess that it has something to do with the dragon sightings, but you could be wrong.

This time it's the man in blue who speaks. “We were expelled from our lands by the Samrat, forced to flee into the Shahdom in search of refuge. The Samrat has been building things along the edge of the desert for many years now, but only recently has he reached our lands. Some tribes stayed behind to fight. Others fled into the...” He trails off, looking to the Elder and saying something in their own dialect you don't really understand.

Short Answer? Rhynian Nature magic.
>>34122796
“Not to mention you're a Vatis-” Mortia interrupts you. “Not a vatis, but a venefica. My mother always said that there was a difference between the two.” You raise an eyebrow. You've heard vague stories about venefica, women who supposedly ingested small amounts of poison until their bodies were so toxic a kiss could kill a man. You'd never lent such stories much credence. “And what exactly does it mean to be a venefica?”
>>34122821
She grins, seems she likes pretending to be the smartest person in the room, metaphorically speaking that is. “It's a trade that has been passed down matrilineally in my family for untold generations. Though like vatis I am able to use some magic, primarily nature magic, most of my talent comes as an alchemist. I can brew potions that will drag a man's spirit back from the land of the dead or poisons that will kill even the hardiest of soldiers with but a whiff of their noxious fumes.” You think on that for a moment, and then nod. “Very well then, I believe your art may have been lost to the ages but I will keep it in mind.

A Venefica was a Roman sorceress who used drugs, potions, and poison for several reasons. Venefica means "a female who poisons" in Latin. The word appears in one of Sir Francis Bacon's Essays,"Of Friendship" in the following lines:

"And it seemeth his favour was so great, as Antonius, in a letter which is recited verbatim in one of Cicero’s Philippics, calleth him ‘venefica,’ witch, —as if he had enchanted Caesar."

>Other definitions
Venefica under the above definition is found in the book Raptor by Gary Jennings, where a venefica slave is purchased in order to assist in carrying out revenge. The setting of this book is in the declining Roman Empire around 500 A.D. In this novel, veneficas are defined as "girl slaves who are, from their infancy, fed certain poisons, first in minute amounts, then in increasing doses throughout their upbringing. By the time they are grown to maidenhood, their own bodies are accustomed to these substances and are unharmed by them. However, so virulent is the accumulated poison, that a man who beds with a venefica - or anyone who partakes of any of her juices - dies on the instant."

Soma based the rythians off of the romans.

You're not really opposed to the idea of getting a tattoo. Granted your hands aren't the best place for it. Really you arms in general seem to get lost or just fall off on a semi-frequent basis. Still it will be a useful experiment, to see how enchanting might effect someone when the runes are carved, or rather drawn, directly upon their flesh. “Do you happen to have the materials for the ink available?”

The woman is the one who responds to your question, rather than the elder. “In very small amounts we have makar lea. A mix of the blood of trees with red cinnamon. Add ash, to darken. Add water, to make ink. Very bright pigment. Good for marking flesh or canvas. Ingredients rare, need certain type of tree and red cinnamon must be brought up from the earth. Tree only grows on the border of Elaudia and Pidjata, not in Elaudia and not in Pidjata.”

Curious. So it's a type of tree sap mixed with cinnabar, or at least that's what you think she's referring to with that 'red cinnamon' part. You know the Rhynians used cinnabar to extract quicksilver. You wonder if that might have some sort of effect on the strength or effects of the enchantment in question? Quicksilver has always been said to hold magical properties, and according to a report you read in your Master's library it tends to absorb vys in vast quantities from its surroundings and store it indefinitely. This trait incidentally tends to make it quite toxic to non-Vatis.

You turn your attention once more to the present. You think the old white-haired woman might be their healer, or perhaps simply an alchemist. “So you could mix it, then? How long would it take do you think? Is it dangerous at all?”

(1/3)
>>
>>40805098
you know what they say about assuming things.
>>
The woman shrugs her shoulders. “Fumes, very bad. See things. Hear things. Voices whisper in ears. Fumes only produced when melted, crushing not dangerous. Mixing not dangerous. Ink not dangerous. Not a long time to mix, only a few hours. Combine makar lea with bone ash and water, let dry. Once dry forms black stone. Grind stone until red appear.”

Why would grinding the stone turn it from black to red? Well, whatever. Alchemy was never your strong suit. You'd bet Mortia would absolutely love to hear this, though. Maybe you ought to keep the recipe in mind? “I believe I shall go through with the tattooing, then. Do you happen to know what the symbols look like?”

The elder nods. “Partially, but many of the original symbols have been lost. Every tribe has their own markings, all derivative from the original symbols written upon flesh before the mountains rose from sand. Ours are carved upon a stone tablet, though others incorporate them into their banner or inscribe them upon standing stones in the desert. We have not had much use for them, since the Messengers hid away.”

The old woman grins excitedly. “After eating I mix, will be good! Long time since I enjoyed use of makar lea. Many hundreds of years.”

You didn't even kill a particularly large dragon, you wonder how they'd treat the soldier in Anthus who managed to kill a dragon larger than most buildings? Regardless, your thoughts turn elsewhere. “What about the Samrat and his buildings? What could he possibly wish to construct along the outer edge of the Pa'vala?”

The man in blue robes is the one who answers. “Post, each one spaced a hundred yards apart. They have large gems at the top, each one bigger than a man's head. He's been building them for years, but we don't know why. Some say they're to keep the Palaka at bay. The worms haven't been as aggressive since their construction started.”

Some sort of fence, perhaps? Regardless you return to your meal. It isn't long before the white-haired woman excuses herself and calls out to a few children wrestling in the sand near-by in their language. The children stop what they're doing and rush over to her, helping her towards one of the dome-shaped huts which sit at the base of the wind-carved spires of rock which these nomads make their home inside and around.

The festivities in general seem to be winding down, with couples secreting away to their homes and parents calling children in for the night. You notice that there is a herd of camels milling about the edge of the camp, men bringing in the herds presumably. Each beast has on its back a barrel of water, and some carry bundles of food and plant matter as well. Perhaps there's a oasis near here?

The elder snaps his fingers and the man with the staff stands, walking around the woven mat to help the old man to his feet. “I will be retrieving the tablet and studying its symbols. The ink will take some time to prepare, as Lilavati earlier explained. You may come with me if you like, to inspect the symbols. Otherwise Ravindra will find a place for you to sleep.” The man in blue, Ravindra you presume, nods at the mention of his name.

It could be a border surveillance system.
It could be a kind of palaka worm fence (like the Australian rabbit fence or the USA's anti-mexican fence) protecting those guys from the worms.
It could be an automated border defense system that shoots lightning at everybody that comes near from the wrong side.
It could be the initial step of a giant death ray that will destroy the shahdom.
As with so many things going on in this quest (what the cloak realy does, whether the Pa'vala will more likely kill us or Elaudia, or maybe the entity will do it first, whether Mortia is poisonous) we don't know. Please don't turn this into another name-calling sperg fest.

How did you get from "not as aggressive" to "pissed off"? The important thing for us right now is that a rival country is building a strange and probably powerful device along the border. You push yourself to your feet, retrieving the last two ribs from the plate and tearing off a chunk of one, while tossing the other into your cloak for Ricky to enjoy. You're struck almost forcefully by a wave of gratitude, though it quickly recedes. Once your thoughts clear you give the Elder your response. “I'll join you in searching out the tablet, I'm curious to see the symbols myself. I believe I may be able to help identify them, if they are what I think they are.”

The Elder nods, and Ravindra takes his leave. You're led through the camp to one of the outcroppings of domed huts. They almost remind you of some sort of insect's nest. The walls of the domes are partially built on top of one another, and some are fused together. Others are supported on wooden platforms. They seem like something you might expect wasp to build.

Regardless, you're led through the huts and up a stairwell. You see one child point at you and say something about 'Parbau', to which she swats his hand and seems to scold him. You also see a young woman leaning out her window, looking generally bored. She's cute, though a little too young for you in all likelihood. Regardless she smiles shyly and waves when she notices your attention.

You wonder if word has spread to the whole of the camp that you've been granted this special status amongst them? They certainly seem accepting, especially considering the fact you're an outsider. Is this what it's like to be a celebrity?
(1/4)
>>
You enter into a tunnel cut through the center of the spire, which leads you through tightly packed corridors and rooms and eventually out onto a flat platform which forms a sort of natural bridge between this rock spire and the furthest rock spire from the the camp. You're led across the bridge and through a heavy iron door decorated with tarnished gold. The only door you've seen in the whole of the camp, come to think of it. Everyone else seems to use heavy woven mats to preserve the privacy of their homes.

Inside the place is cluttered to put it politely. The place is packed to overflowing with crates and bundles. The whole of the tribe's supplies you imagine. The Elder cuts through the junk with practiced ease, stopping in front of a gilded case and tapping it with his cane. “Open this for me, would you Dinesh?”

The younger man crouches down and undoes a latch, raising the lid to reveal two stone tablets stacked on top of one another. It occurs to you that this Dinesh fellow hasn't said a word since you've met him, and that staff of his is a powerful piece of enchanting. You find him suspicious, to be frank. Regardless he retrieves the stone tablets and tucks them under one arm.

The elder nods, patting the younger man on the shoulder. “Good, good. Now lets go upstairs. It will be more comfortable to study them there, and the lighting is better.”

(2/4)
>>
The elder once again hobbles off, using his staff as something of a cane. The stairs are difficult, but between you and Dinesh you manage to get the old man up without too much difficulty. Upstairs you find a set of surprisingly comfortable rooms. Pillows are strewn about in a loose circle surrounding a hookah pipe and a plush mattress sits on a small raised stand at one end. You presume these are the Elder's own rooms.

The Elder gestures offhandedly and a dozen candles ignite at once, shedding light on the room. Fine rugs, thick tappestries, all the markings of luxury ornament the space. The elder leads the two of you to the hookah pipe, though merely sits down on some of the pillows with a grateful sigh. “Dinesh, fetch a candle would you?”

The younger man crosses the room to retrieve a candle off of a window sill, the window itself little more than a hole in the wall eroded by the wind. You take a seat amongst the pillows next to the Elder. A moment later Dinesh returns to join the two of you, handing off the tablets to the elder and holding the candle out above them so you can all get a good look at the symbols.

On the first tablet you almost immediately identify the 'Fire' and 'Contain' runes. They're both distorted, their edges softened and certain parts of the symbols elongated or shortened to make them more flowing. They appear distinctly Samjan, unlike the runes taught to you by Mahana which are blocky and generally unappealing. However, the two runes you can identify are far outweighed by the eighteen that you can't.

The elder points his finger to one rune in particular, its meaning unknown to you. “The Elder before me, when I was still his apprentice, told me that this symbol means 'Destruction'.” He slides his finger down one. “While this symbol means 'Life'. Both are written in the same tongue the Messengers use, or used perhaps.”

(3/4)
>>
He points to the rune for Fire, just below the rune for Life. “This rune, he said, is the name of the one you call Surya, whom we name Iraida.” He moves his finger to the rune for Contain, which is in the column immediately next to the rune for Fire. “This one means 'Protect', if I recall correctly. Unfortunately I don't know the rest.”

He sets the tablet in front of him and moves on to the next. You immediately recognize the runes for Water and Stone, as well as the rune for Blood, Repel, and Sustain. Again, the process repeats itself. Water the Elder identifies as the symbol for Pani, whom he calls Jala. Stone he names Prthvi, whom he calls Parthaivai. He can't identify the symbols for blood or repel, and simply states that the rune Sustain is the most important of them all. He also identifies one rune as the rune for Srsti, whom he seems to have no qualms about naming. She's usually referred to as 'She Who Was Banished'. Perhaps another elemental rune? No rune for Dhatu, oddly enough.

After he's gone through each rune he recognizes his attention turns to you. “The ritual is that two symbols are chosen, and that each is drawn within a circle conjoined by a line. Then channels are drawn onto your skin to fuel the symbols with vys. They're made to resemble the natural flow of vys from one's arms as they channel. Have you any insight?”

You pluck up the tablet he just set down. “I do have some insights to give, in fact. I can speak, or at least I understand, the language of the Messengers to some minor extent. I learned it from a spirit, who named it the Gods' tongue. The language of creation. Every symbol is a word, and each word has the power to change reality. The Rhynians used it for enchanting objects, as have I.”

You run through the list, explaining each symbols true meaning. Both the Elder and Dinesh listen with single minded intensity as you explain. You give them a brief overview of the mechanics of enchanting as well. You explain how an enchantment is created by carving runes within a series of concentric circles with a base rune being affected by other runes which are linked to it. You also explain how to gate a rune and what effect doing so has.

By the end of it you've probably gone a little more in depth than you intended but you weren't really doing anything more than extrapolating based off what they already knew. Really, you're surprised by how much these tribals know. Granted it's been distorted somewhat because it's been passed down based on an oral tradition rather than writing, but it's impressive nevertheless.

When you finish speaking the Elder leans back into the pillows and starts stroking his beard contemplatively. You can practically see the gears turning in his head, and vys pours off of him as he presumably enhances his own mind via magical expenditure. After a time he speaks, hesitant. “I think I have a grasp on what you've said. What if we were to do something like... 'Repel Fire', or 'Contain Fire'? Would they make you immune to flame? If you fight dragons on anything approaching a regular basis, it might come in handy.”

(1/2)
>>
>>40807529
I guess we should throw away the cloak then
>>
You shrug your shoulders. “Most likely, although to some extent I get the feeling that the runes are somewhat context sensitive. Repel Fire would likely force the flames actively away from me, where as Contain Fire would probably just have the flames engulf me but not harm me.”

Dinesh speaks for the first time since you've met him. “What if we were to do something like... 'Contain Life'? You said you were unfamiliar with the Life symbol, correct? Perhaps it would prevent your soul from leaving your body, or keep you alive after sustaining otherwise mortal wounds?”

Repel Fire would not necessarily interfere with nature magic, although it may. You won't know until you try it.

Anyway, since "something Fire related" and "Contain Life" are tied and there are a few outliers, I'll do a Final Destination vote.

VOTE
1
To go with Repel+Fire

2

It won't kill us but may deny us some things. Depends what Life is about. The body or soul. If its about the body we should be fine. But if its soul it may force our soul to stay in our body. Thus losing the ability to do void stuff. Although it would probably trap our excess vys as well.

I'm kidding. I wouldn't kill you guys for a single vote, unless it was PAINFULLY obvious that such a vote would lead to your death or otherwise quest end. Otherwise you'll need to make multiple horrible decisions to get yourself killed, unless the dice just really fuck you over in combat.

You debate long and hard between Repel Fire and Contain Life. Contain Life is a gamble, since you don't know what the 'Life' symbol actually means or how it was supposed to look before it was altered by untold years of use and distortion. You don't know the pure rune, essentially. It might have effects that you couldn't have accounted for. However, in the end you'd rather go with something potentially powerful rather than something mildly convenient. Especially consider you can protect yourself from fire with magic alone.

With your decision made you inform the Elder. “I believe I'll pick Contain Life. I feel it's a risk, but the risk should hopefully be worth it. How long do you think Lilavati will be mixing the ink?”

The Elder scrunches his brow together. “How long have we been sitting here? Perhaps an hour? The last time we've had cause to perform this ritual was almost six hundred years ago, and my memory has been slipping in recent years. That said, I believe it will be somewhere in the neighborhood of five or so more hours.”

He reaches over, placing a kind hand on your shoulder. “You should get some rest, Dinesh can show you to a room. Steel yourself, for the ritual is painful. Even Vatis, when the ink breaches their skin they scream. I remember those screams far better than I do anything else about the ritual. I as well will be retiring to bed soon.”

You don't like the sound of that. Perhaps the ink burns as it enters the skin? It's essentially quicksilver ore mixed with plant sap, you wouldn't be surprised it it damaged the flesh.

A. Should we bring some "lackeys" from the academy along on our expedition? Would be pretty useful and with the cloak providing for them shouldn't be a problem

B. Bringing along some of our new tribal buddies. Obviously very skilled at living in the desert and with our new status I'm sure we'd get some volunteers.

With the resources from the Elaudian Jungle, the answer will be "ring of Heart's Desire," and "Airship/balloon."

The story Mahana told you in the vault beneath your estate come back to you now, regarding the early beginnings of the Samjan race and their endowment by the gods. “Does the name of 'Al-Hikar' mean anything to you, Elder? Perhaps in the context of early Pidjata, and the founding of Hiacia?”

The Elder runs his fingers through his beard, working knots from the curly hair. “We have tales of 'Alikar', who may be the ones you call Al-Hikar. The Alikar were the progenitors of our race. They mated with the Messengers of the Gods, and from them the Samjan were born. Legends say they were once the Messenger's slaves, but over time grew into something more. They launched a rebellion, and killed their master before fleeing into the inhospitable desert, which changed them for the better.”

Interesting, their creation myth for Samjan is quite similar to a forgotten children's tale that Varistha Sehzade told you. The Elder elaborates further, and you listen with rapt attention “We do not speak of the Alikar in relation to Hiacia. Hiacia, as the story goes, was founded by a man named Yakand, whom was favored by Pani. He struck the ground with a sword and a spring burst forth, turning into a rushing river. He founded a city on that site, and the city was call Yakancia. Over time the pronunciation has shifted with the language, and ultimately turned into 'Hiacia'.”

You're inclined to believe the tale Mahana told you, considering he was likely there to see it all take place. Still, you wonder if there isn't a kernel of truth buried somewhere in the Elder's tale? Regardless, you're growing weary and either sleep or meditating would likely do you good. “Thank you, Elder. I believe that I will leave you to retire then.” You turn your attention to Dinesh. “Shall we go?”

The man stands wordlessly and you follow. You wonder why he speaks so rarely? Regardless you follow after him down the stairs and through the storage rooms. The heavy iron door, the tarnished gold glinting only faintly, slides open with surprising ease and the two of you make your way once more across the bridge. You're led through the now sleeping village, hardly anyone to be seen save the camel herders tending their flocks.

You're led across the sands to the other outcropping of huts which surrounds a near-by pillar rising from the sands. There isn't much difference between the houses of the tribals, save for where two huts have fused together. You presume that indicates two families joined by marriage, or two families of the same clan. You can't be sure, of course. Eventually Dinesh stops in front of one hut which looks much like any other, and slips inside.

You follow him, to find man sitting around a hookah, sipping cups of tea. Two small children are sleeping on woven mats, blankets pulled over them and pillows stacked beneath them. A third child, a teenage girl, is reading with her back propped against the wall. She's bundled up in blankets and seems to have constructed a sort of make-shift nest out of pillows. Dinesh speaks quietly with the two adults, parents presumably, while the teenager tries very hard not to appear interested. Then Dinesh just slips out without even a word in your direction.

The father turns to you, smiling amicably. When he speaks, his accent is thick and his speech clumsy, but it's understandable enough. “Staying with us, yes? Join for smoke and drink? Sooths to bed.”

There are guides who know the pa'vala. And they sure as fuck know where the largest and main city is.

>How big is the temple
Doesn't fucking matter cause even if it is big as fuck we can still search it. Though I think I remember it being said that it was in some grand chamber on display or some shit.

And everything beyond that doesn't matter because this is more than we have for the Elaudia trip. Which amounts to "it's on the other side"

We have more info on where to find the artifact than where to find the recipe. And we know the desert is survivable. No one has ever made it through Elaudia. Not that we know of.

through the jungle, our brother's going to the city by ship.
Even then we met an ex-adventurer who went and came back, the guy we tried to buy the parrot for Ricky to eat way back at the temple.

>People who go into the center die. Period
False.

>Tons of people have went deep into the Elaudian jungle and came out with stories. There's even settlements.
Also false.

People occasionally return from traveling a few weeks journey in.

Also. I'm sure there are old maps of Hicia. Maps probably found in the great library our in the hands of those tribes who frequently journey in. Either hunting worms or on expeditions.

To answer some questions about Hiacia and Elaudia.
Nobody has ever traveled particularly deep into either and come out alive.
Tours are hosted along the outskirts of Hiacia and there are mapped safe routes, as well as old maps copied from Hiacia records of the area that is now the Pa'vala. Which marks cities and forts and other shit, but only stuff which was public knowledge. The Hiacian Empire kept many secrets. There are native tribes who still live in the Pa'vala, but they're few and stick mostly to the outskirts.

Nobody who travels more than a week or two into Elaudia ever comes back. Nobody knows what lies that far in. Some say the Jungle is alive and kills those who journey within. HOWEVER, nobles do host hunting trips into Elaudia just as they go hunting in the Pa'vala. There are also attempts underway to reclaim Elaudia, though slow going. You've met a man who journeyed into Elaudia with a native guide, implying that there are natives.

Think those were the big points.

Elaudia is actually a bit more of a 'mystery box' since no maps exist, it may either be safer or more dangerous than the Pa'vala. The Pa'vala on the other hand is sort of a known entity, you know what lives there and how dangerous its creatures are.

At the end of the day it comes down to: Are you a gambling man?

Good thread Soma.
I was giddy right until this moment when no one thought of attempting to meditate on the other runes of those tablets or on the one called "life," I'm glad everyone felt the same as me as to leave it a good mystery for later.

We're in the middle of a desert retard and metal 3 insights away from leveling not 2 like nature which would be the better choice to level.

metal is good against the void nigga, and guess where we heading?
>Void Creatures, Vulnerability to Silver?: You turn the page again, and this time it depicts a figure standing. A creature of shadow charges from behind him, and his arm forms into a long silver blade. With a sweep of its arm, the shadow is cut down. More come at him, and over the course of several minutes it dances across thin air, slicing this way and that with metallic blades formed, as far as you can tell, from its very flesh. When it comes to stand once more at its origin point, it sits down and the blades vanish.
>>
>>40809869
We're not going to the void dumbass also that would require you to mediate on that particular technique but nature is better because it improves survivability which metal is horrible at.
>>
>>40809935
>which metal is horrible at.
Metal is ALL about increasing survivability.

yup just the desert that is infected with what ever the fuck the mask is made from.

True, and it seems like a good technique to know.
>but nature is better because it improves survivability
wrong thats water, nature improves perception though.
>which metal is horrible at.
HAHAHAHAHA anon that is one of metals main points.

We should tell the family tales of our travels, sharing stories of places near and far.
>>
we should get Mortia to create heroin or morphine out of the opium and Soma said there was cannabis as well so we could make dabs and with the farmland we'll buy cheaply we could start very profitable business, and since the food producing farms will raise the pop growth we'll have even more customers, and it could be used to destabilize other countries before invading

Lol making dabs, thanks for the chuckle anon it was highly unexpected. I agree though that we should grow some cannabis but I'd rather not start making heroin and hard drugs that would further ruin the shitty lives the poor have in this setting.
