Your name is Thomas Cairn, and you have no clue what you jumped into. Your dad was a famous superhero known as The Red Rider, and he showed up dead in an alley about a year ago. When you were checking out a storage unit you inherited from him, everything changed. You gained his powers, a brain able to calculate faster than light, and an uncanny affinity for machinery.

Using your powers, you were easily able to get into the world's top engineering college, Central Cosmopolis Institute. You never moved past Dad's ideas though, and you couldn't stand the gap The Red Rider made, so you filled it. You made a suit of power-armor and became The Red Knight, however, you lacked experience. So you managed to get a mentor, Wrench, so that you could learn the Hero business. Of course the only way to learn is experience, so you spent a good portion of your free time breaking up Mafia operations around Cosmopolis.

The people have taken a shine to you. They were scared about The Red Rider's "hiatus", but now that you're here they think that, like other normal Supers, he passed on the torch. The crowds love you, every time you fly by at least 20 phones come out, but no good comes without a price...

Why did it have to be here at the Institute? Surely there are other places that you can make an undead army. This is actually a terrible place to do it.

But no! This asshole necromancer HAD to do it here! The swarm of gray undead flesh flows and changes in sudden jerks like a scratched record. Luckily, you don't recognize any of their faces, but if you had to count them, there would be around 500 outside. None of them are as big as the ones you fought earlier, instead looking like emaciated corpses, but Gerome said that didn't reflect skill. He said numbers did, so either this guy is really good, or that Catalyst is more effective than you thought.

Jeana was here, she stayed for the summer too, but the question is where she is now. This guy would be a fool to kill all the civilians, he probably has them hostage to either ransom or sacrifice or something. Maybe they're being held in the Science Building, maybe the... wait. You should be able to search for the highest concentration of zombies to find where they're being held. That makes sense, maybe you can rescue them.

Gerome also said that necromancers use curses and sage keeps curses away, maybe you should get some of that at the Cooking classroom. Speaking of which, there seems to be a shimmer of light coming from a window in that building.

Priority one: establish status of hostages
Priority two: Get sage
Three: Go mow zombies till the summoner pops up or go right to him.

Do our micro-actuators have enough strength that if we threw a bunch of them into the crowd of zombies and told them to decapitate them, would they be able to?

No use rushing this, someone might need help. You can't let someone in need go alone! Well... maybe you could, but that's a dick move. Who knows, maybe the hostages are in that room. No point in wasting time, gotta get this done fast.

You jump off the roof and ignite your jets about ten feet above the ravening horde, they smell like burnt hair. The wind whips around you as you shoot over to the other roof and stick the landing. It's time to rock, you ignite your Plasma Blades and cut the lock on the roof access. You run inside and descend the stairs, heading to the room you saw the light come from. It soon becomes apparent that you're heading to the cooking classroom.

You round the corner to the hallway you need and find it filled with zombies. They look at you with glazed eyes and blackened teeth, their very being filling you with dread. The smell of charred grizzle haunts the hall like a pervading stench of atrocity, making you glad for the ventilation from the windows on one side of the hallway.

Maybe this is the time to try out one of the modifications RON made to your beam gauntlets...

No time like the present, and it's the thought that counts, and why are you even thinking in cliches anymore. You cycle the beam gauntlet and the cuff rotates as it should, now time to test the beam. You press the trigger in your gauntlet to activate the beam and a thin red beam shoots out from your wrist. So that works.

Now to aim down the hall and swing. You lift your arm and activate the beam again while pointing at the head level of the zombies. Unfortunately, the beam is not the best calibrated and ends up cutting most of their heads in half and a few of them are merely cut in half. To be positive, the ones that had their heads cut in half disappear in a burst of ash, while the bisected shamblers' legs do the same.

Though it was not the best shot, it did clear the entrance to the Cooking room, so you run down the hall, stomping any of the stragglers and rush to the room. What you see when you get there is a sight that looks badass, ridiculous, and hilarious at the same time. Standing on a table in the middle of the room, Mr. Armstrong and Jack Enrique are back-to-back decapitating a few zombies with meat cleavers duct-taped to brooms.

Just as you walk in they finish the last one off...

You begin clapping, the metallic clanging of your gauntlets gets their attention.

"DUDE, you're The Red Knight! Did you see that? There are zombies everywhere, this is crazy!" Jack seems to be quite the fan of your persona.

Mr. Armstrong looks at you with a face of pure joy. "You got the ones in the hallway! I could do that for a few of them, but not that many! Thank you, and where do I get some of those little robots you use, they're really cool."

"I got them off a website, just look it up. Also, do you know where the hostages are? I need some sage too, because magic is weird." The modulator in your helmet is working like a charm, distorting your voice to a low, rumbling bass.

"Jack, get the guy some sage. The zombies have been dragging people to the cafeteria for a while now, and we don't want to go to whatever they're doing."

Jack grabs a jar of sage from the spice cabinet. "I thought Humans vs. Zombies was scheduled for September."

"Too soon Jack."

He quickly hands you the jar and grabs his improvised halberd.

"Thank you Red Knight, can I get a picture?" Jack seems really excited.

"When this is done, I'll give you an autograph. But right now I have to save those people." Sounds about right for a hero.

They nod at you as you run out the door to the bathroom down the hall, stomping zombies all the way, and start butting the sage under your armor. He doesn't need to know you're protected, every advantage is needed in baseball. Why, why do you do that to me brain? You get everything back on and fly out the window in the hall across from the restroom.

Time to save some civilians, and your girlfriend, and your roommate, and all of your teachers. What a pleasant thought. You land on the cafeteria roof and you can feel the air around you spark with energy. You cut open the door and descend the stairs to the disturbingly empty back rooms. There isn't a single zombie in sight. You can't help but feel relieved.

You sigh and the air around you becomes frigid, making you suddenly gasp for air.

You instinctively fire your Stun Beam from the gauntlet and, to your surprise, you hit something in front of you. The atmosphere rumbles with a low growl and becomes as humid as a jungle. The choking feeling stops and in front of you, a pool of black liquid resembling ink, or some kind of dark mud you would find in a shallow grave, writhes up from the ground. Maybe the thing implanted that grave thing in your head since you've never seen that.

"WELL FUCK YOU SPIRIT, I'M ALREADY CRAZY, YOU HAVE NO POWER IN MY MIND BITCH!"

You feel a pressure on your skull release and a high yelp echoes around the room. Then the puddle oozes into a solid form, resembling a black dog with wicked fangs and white eyes. It growls at you in anger.

Well, time to do what any sane and stable individual would do in this situation... yeah, no. You lunge at it and start swinging your fists. Surprisingly, you keep hitting it, but the punch doesn't hit anything of substance. This thing obviously isn't playing around, it tries to bite at you but you keep weaving out of the way and throwing more punches. Then, a crazy idea comes to you.

"Propterea accipite armaturam Dei!" You swear that punch contacted it this time, maybe this wasn't so crazy.

"-Ut possitis resistere in die malo!" You are definitely hitting it now, it whines like an injured pup and it seems to make a crackling noise as you hit it.

"-Et omnibus perfectis stare." You hit it one last time and it stays down, its body smoking and lifeless. Then the spirit melts into black goo and evaporates.

Well, that went better than expected, now all that's left is to find those hostages.

You start to walk quietly down the steps to the cafeteria when suddenly...

"STOP RIGHT THERE TIN CAN, OR THE KID GETS IT!" Standing behind the stairs with the hostages all gagged, holding a gun to Monica's head, is a man in a suit holding a staff with the handle as a head.

You freeze up and stop on the stairs, he can't possibly know that Monica's your friend or who you are, this surely must be dumb luck, right? You haven't gone home since he had you on his radar, so he couldn't possibly have known.

"Now, I want you to get on the wall down here, and take off the suit. No funny business or this broad's brains are gonna be jelly." This must be the necromancer, you recognize the outfit, it's a mortician's outfit.

"Why are you doing this?" Maybe he'll start monologuing so you can get the drop on him, that seems to happen a lot. It's worth a shot.

"Yes, I would, do you always dress like a carny or is it a seasonal thing?" You try to distract him as you slip the nanobots out of your gloves and pouches, willing them to flow along the floor to his side.

"Unfortunately, wordplay isn't my thing I-" Monica quickly moves her head to the side and knocks the gun out of his hand before the nanobots are even halfway there. The Mortician, as you think is a suiting name, is flabbergasted by this and grabs her by the hair. He starts hitting her over, and over, and over ag-

A loud bang rings out over the campus, a percussive shot that pierces all activities, shakes every person in the room to their very core, some more literally than others.

A bloody hole appears in The Mortician's head and he slumps over, still holding Monica in his death grip. A screaming is heard from outside, as all of the zombies shriek a deathrattle and evaporate into ashes.

Sitting behind the corpse and all of the commotion of the hall, is Harry holding a gun, shocked at his actions more than anyone else in the room.

You set the nanobots to break the zipties and walk over to Harry, who looks like he has seen Death himself fly from the gun, and kneel down.

"Listen, I'm going to need you to drop that gun, I understand what your going through and all, but it's over." It wasn't long ago that Jeana was saying those words to you outside of Dad's storage unit. You realize that the voice modulator probably made that sound worse than it is.

Harry nods and drops the gun before curling into a fetal position and turning away. He's probably not going to want to talk for a while. You know what he felt, the anger at the person hurting the one you love, but you never went through with it all the way. You don't have a clue how that must feel.

You walk over and pry the now dead Mortician off of Monica and tell her that everything will be alright, you don't know if it helps. You should be feeling terror right now, but instead you just feel numb, like somehow your emotions aren't coming up from the surface of a deep lake. It truly is terrifying to see what all of your experience in crime-fighting has made you. Strong, but also lacking.

First thing's first, you check the hostages and Jeana is in the back. It probably wouldn't be a good idea to talk to her, as that would draw attention to her. Next, you take The Mortician's body and staff outside and ignite your Plasma Blade. You slice cleanly at the neck and his head rolls on the floor, which you then pick up to bring with you to the lab. This almost feels unreal, like you're going to wake up at the lab in the morning and none of this happened, but that is probably too much to ask.

You fly high above the clouds to make sure that nobody sees you, then you drop into the roof hatch of the lab, a recent addition. The body doesn't smell like the zombies, it smells of formaldehyde and a bit of cologne.

"I take it that you want me to call Mr. Salvos Sir?"

"Yes RON, that would be good."

After a bit of back and forth, you determine with Mr. Salvos that taking his stuff and burning the body is the best idea. Mr. Salvos said that he dealt with something similar before. So you start searching the corpse. In his pockets are various cuts of onyx, a few elderberries, and a silver ring that is completely mundane, as RON tells you. The staff could probably be kept here, as the lab is warded now.

>>
You decide that you should at least know this guy's name, so you dig up dental records. His name is George Liket and he worked at The Moros Funeral Home until being institutionalized a year ago for severe paranoid episodes. Had no family to speak of, 27 years old, single. That must have been sad, but now that's over.

You open up a test room and ignite the corpse, the smoke twisting like a snake as it wafts into the vents. After a few hours, there is nothing left but a pile of ash that you put in a jar. You take the staff and put it in a room that you have taken to calling The Vault after discovering it. It looks exactly like a bank vault and it seems as sturdy. The jar is the tricky part, you decide to burn it until there is none left, nothing remains of George Liket.

You take off the suit, and you cry. It's terrible, if you were able to get him to keep talking, then Monica wouldn't have knocked the gun out of his hands and none of this would've happened. You end up falling asleep hungry, sad, and alone

An eye looks out among the darkness of the tomb, it stares unblinking towards the inevitable future. This is the Seer, and the others will be joining it soon.

Please no. We just had a breakdown. Thankfully all it was was Tom just crying and passing out. With Pym Power he might've gone suicidal there.
>>
>>40822781
>True. Still a +10 or +15 would be a lot safer (+2/+3)
well thats a give
>>
>>40822851
I don't think we had an actual breakdown there, with the perk we have we could have rolled to stop it.

Okay but what else do you call that? I mean is very breakdowny to me. I'm nit saying I'm right. It's just what it looked like to me as after he took if his mask he broke down.

Not mechanically, but that is a part of it, when you have a breakdown, you do something and you get a status effect from my roll table, stress affects severity.

As in, supercharge blades to cut more stuff, supercharge jetpacks to fly faster. At the cost of much higher chance of failure of course.

ohh red knight suit MK.II

75 suits later
>>
>>40823202
Hmm...what about nano-weave hypercores, letting nanites flow together to make the various implements we're trying to put into our suit? Like, they'd make repulsor-modules when we wanted to fly, shift between cloak and nanoarmor depending on the situation, automatically transition to Spinner-bots when we were wounded, form plasma blades or whatever beam weapon we wanted on command, that sorta thing.

It could be called Adaptive Nano-weave, let it add an extra slot to every armor class.

>Kill one, save a thousand: No longer accrue stress when doing bad things, so long as there is a very, very good reason for doing them or unless the "victim" is committing a crime at the time. Killing others still increases stress, though is less effective.
It's an add-on to I'm a professional

The add-on for that is
>For the Greater Good. No longer accrue stress for doing something unseemly, so long as there is a worthwhile end goal in mind. If this end goal fails, all the accumulated stress is received in one burst, though at half effectiveness. Killing others still increases stress, though less so than normal.
