There are a lot more dwarven swear words than you'd expect. Apparently the constant risk of head injury from falling rocks prompts some very colorful expression in the dwarven race. Never before have you encountered such a poetic stream of foul invective as that being explained to you by your half dwarf friend. You're supposed to be improving your language skills, but sometimes swearing is just fun.

Gretchen finally emerges from her home to find you cussing up a storm with her... student? Employee? You're not really sure what Aldera's position around here is. Though the dwarven descriptor for it is apparently a sodomized monkey with the workload of a rent by the hour donkey. Such a beautiful language.

When Gretchen hears the description though Aldera decides it is time for her to make herself scarce. Which is honestly for the best. You've business with the witch, and your clone is eager and ready for it. You didn't even see her wake up and come over to you.

"Alright, before we continue I need to know something," the witch says, "Which of you is my client for this job?"

You exchange a confused glance with Nytora before directing you confusion properly at the witch. She rolls her eyes and explains further.

"I'm getting an idea of the shape of things, but the information is definitely something that might set one of you off. If Sunny is the client she should get the info first and vice versa. Though I can't give you any hard facts until I've examined Nytora."

>Nytora's the only one with a non-tail related problem, she's the client

"What do you think?"

Nytora takes a moment before realizing you were asking her. She looks surprised that you'd ask then considers it seriously for a minute before answering.

"You recommended coming here," she says, "But this is my problem. Kinda yours too since I'm a problem of yours I guess? I dunno. I'd ask auntie, but she's not here." She sighs and settles into a sulk.

You look at Gretchen and she shrugs. Alright, Nytora has no more idea than you. Luckily it's daytime, that means you're in charge. That's how you've decided this is going to work.

"I think both of us are the client then," you tell Gretchen.

She nods, "Alright. I'll give you my findings at the same time. I'm going to need to borrow Nytora for a while."

Nytora stretches and stands to go with the witch.

You can tell Nytora isn't sure about Gretchen so you pat her on the shoulder and show her an encouraging expression.

"It will be fine. Gretchen has helped me in the past," you tell her.

Nytora glances at the witch covertly then leans in and whispers. "Is she sensitive about her disfigurement?"

You sneak a glance as well before answering, "I haven't brought it up. I'm pretty sure it's not contagious though or Aldera would have them too." Then you raise your voice a bit to allay suspicion, "Gretchen is super smart. She knows all about magic and stuff."

A bit of ego stroking goes a long way as the witch is quick to add in how qualified she is. Nytora accepts this and the witch leads them down a hole.

Well, there's apparently time on your claws again. You head over to the area where Aldera disappeared into the ground. You sniff the air and scratch at the ground where the smell terminates. You're rewarded with a trapdoor pulling up and opening into the underground. Deep inside you can faintly hear sounds of exertion. Following the sounds you enter a chamber full of charred stick men with wooden buckets for heads, and leather stuffed with straw for bulky bodies. Aldera is attacking one of them with a shovel and a mining pick. You're not sure if there's some invisible magic only she can see or if she has a reason for dodging non-existent attacks but she's hitting the stick man quite hard. It's very impressive.

"Hey," you call.

Aldera turns from her stick man hitting to look at you for a second.

"Hi Sunny. Did you need something?" she asks.

"Can you teach me magic?" you ask her bluntly.

She misses a swing and crashes into the stick man she was fighting.

"What?" she asks sounding surprised, a stream of curses releasing under her breath as she untangles herself from her target.

"Magic," you repeat.

"Oh uh, I don't know any magic," she says sheepishly, "I only know some basic alchemy stuff, nothing really useful."

"Oh. Want to practice swearing?" you ask hopefully.

Her expression twists, clearly conflicted. "I'd like to but I really need to get these drills done. Then I need to get out the real drills so I can help dad uncollapse a tunnel he collapsed this morning."

"Why did he collapse it?"

Aldera shrugs. "Because he wants to teach me how to dig out a collapsed tunnel? He's weird like that sometimes."

"Oh. I guess I'll be outside then," you tell her.

"If I get some free time I'll come visit."

Taking your leave you make your way back to the surface. As you step into the sunlight you take a moment and enjoy the rush of energy you get from just being out in the daylight. Your persistent aches and pains seem to just wash away as the light pours down on you.

You play with your magic a bit while you wait for someone to have time for you. You can cast your little sun light reliably, though the duration is a bit of a crapshoot still. That's probably just as good as you're going to get until you can fix your mana problem. You can vent mana in about a minute's time now, and you tend to do it out of habit whenever you get a minute to stop moving. You toy with your sun mana for a while, trying to find a way to force out an explosion that won't set you on fire or damage you. You're not making very much progress and time is eaten up quickly.

Gretchen's reappearance would probably have gone unnoticed with the depth of magical introspection you were in if not for all her swearing. Something about a tunnel being blocked. Nytora follows her out and then stops to watch you.

"Did you need something?" you ask her shortly, still trying to find a mix of magic that won't immolate you when forced out.

"You're doing it wrong," she says idly, "Just bask."

You stare at her for a moment wondering what she's on about.

You roll your eyes and settle into a proper bask. Nytora lets out an approving noise you notice on the periphery of the basking zen.

"Now use your powers. But don't stop basking," she says.

You start trying to pull in mana and manipulate it, your bask starting to fail immediately, and Nytora let's out a discouraging huff.

"No, no. Do not force things. Do you even like the sun? Just bask in the sun. Then let the sun in you gather and move."

You have no idea what that means, but you'll give it a shot if it means being able to throw little suns at people. You relax back into a proper bask but try to stay in a mindset to use your abilities. Letting the sun soak into you. You feel a niggling something that's not quite in line with the feeling and adjust... Ah, it was your glow, you'd turned it off. You let it shine and feel it align itself in a way you never realized before

You feel a weird energy gather in you as you bask, your mind strangely still seperate from the pure joy of basking in the sun while still entwined with your abilities. There's a mana aspect to it but there are other elements you can't quite pin down as the power swells as you gather it. You can feel your deep appreciation and love for the sun in there.

You hear distantly Nytora being dragged off by the witch but ignore it in favor of fiddling with this new toy. After a period of time you failed to track the energy swells and you can feel it reach a critical point where you can use it. You don't feel like this can go wrong.

You guide the power gently letting it flow into your body at its own rate and it spreads evenly throughout. Your scales glow a bright green, visible even in the noon sun, and you feel the dull aches and pains that faded with your exposure to the sun grow non-existent. The places where you were battered by Nytora last night warm as power pools in them before fading and your tail stump itches from the amount of energy that gathers in it. Then after a few seconds the light recedes as the power peters out.

>COMBAT BASK ENDED
>SUN ATTENUTATION SPENT
>SUNNIVA LEARNED P-SYNTHESIS

Looking yourself over you find that your scales have resumed the polished smoothness that they had prior to your crab adventure where you swam in close proximity to acid extruding organs. The scuffs and chips from the various attacks you've weathered recently are gone. Flexing you find no lingering pain from the injuries of the past day. Aches you hadn't even realized were there are now starkly obvious in the absence they left behind.

Excited by the potential of this you examine your tail and find that it's still just a stump. Though on closer inspection you think it may have grown back a very tiny bit.

Not what you'd hope for but it's progress. You look up and see the sun has advanced a bit in the sky, just enough for you to notice. How long were you doing that?

You flex again. Everything feels pretty normal. Still better to test things. Leave nothing untested lest you find out about bad side effects later.

Looking around you find a discarded piece of wood a couple inches wide and about half as tall. It's about a foot long and comparing it to Gretchen's fence tells you it's probably a left over from her fencing project she's got going, if the pile of wood under the tree nearby means anything.

The wood should be sturdy enough to resist your muscles so you can feel for any irregularities while flexing. You grip the wood between your hands and try to bend it in half. Then it snaps in half. That wasn't supposed to happen. You try again with one of the short pieces and repeat the result.

This calls for further experimentation. You steal a length of wood from the pile under the shade tree and try again. And yours muscles fail to break it. Maybe you just got a bad piece of wood earlier? You wrestle with it in your attempt to break it.

When it fails to break with just your hands you get more energetic. Moving your arms more shaking and flailing the board as you try to snap it in half. Your thrashing causes you to slip and you tumble away from the tree, trying to avoid a faceful of bark.

You glare at the wooden offender, now lying in the sun taunting you with its unblemished perfection. You pick it up and give it another go. Your muscles surge to the task and the wood snaps in your grip. Huh. You repeat with one of the halves. Weird.

"Sunniva!" a voice calls out. You turn to see Nytora and Gretchen exitting the house. You toss the wood aside and go over to greet them.

"How is it?" you ask, "Are you going home?"

Nytora shrugs and you both look at the witch.

"I told you I'd give you both the information at once, and that's what I'm going to do," she reminds you.

"I may have broken some of your fence making materials..." you admit quickly.

"I'm supposed to give the bad news," Gretchen says, "Not let you pick which one you have to give. Wait, why did you break my stuff?"

"I was testing my strength? I learned a new thing. Then I tested to see what it did, then the first piece of wood broke without my meaning to. Then the second piece DIDN'T break. Until it did," you explain.

"What."

"Did you step out of the sun?" Nytora asks.

"Yes, wh-"

"That's why the second one didn't break," Nytora explains nodding to herself.

You add your own "What." to the pile hanging in the air.

Nytora looks between the two of you confused about your confusion. "I have the blessing of night time. I am better at night in most everything," she explains. "Sunny is like me but for daytime so she probably has a daytime blessing. If she's in sunlight she's probably stronger."

That... makes a lot of sense. It explains a couple things actually.

"Alright." You not. "We can take the bad news now," you tell Gretchen.

She looks annoyed. "Well, thank you for your permission." she huffs. "The bad news is that Sunny is a terrible wizard and should probably be kept away from anything that resembles a spellbook without proper supervision."

You let out an affronted noise but she waves you down.

"After fixing the book and reading through it I have no idea what Sunny thought she was casting but she's lucky she didn't accidentally throw herself into the screaming void."

That's ominous.

"Shush," Gretchen says pointing at you. Despite the fact you didn't say anything. "There were no spells in that book. Just magical theory that you somehow ham fisted into a working spell with brute force and a local mana tap."

"The next piece of bad news-"

"How much bad news is there?" you ask.

"A lot. Now be quiet. The next bit of bad news is that I lost your book. While I was fixing it I accidentally broke a sample stability enchantment on it and it recombined with the other versions of itself and exploded."

"That was my book!" you protest.

"Hazards of the business. And you broke my fenceposts, this makes us even," Gretchen sniffs, "Anyway I got most everything I needed from it before it went up anyway."

"Wouldn't being able to hammer a working spell out of theory make me a really good wizard?" you ask, still hurt at her accusation.

"Yes, that'd make you a great wizard," Gretchen agrees happily.

"That's not what she did is it..." Nytora groans.

"Not even a little bit," Gretchen smiles. "You took the theory for a time spell and brute forced it into a space spell that just tried to work with the spell shadow of a spell cast earlier."

You didn't follow half of that.

"You did the complete opposite of making the theory into the spell and created something in the wrong school and powered it with mana from the school and then lucked out when it didn't eat you," she grins.

"I get the idea."

"Please stay away from spellbooks without a teacher on hand," she asks politely.

"Kay..." You're not sure you'll keep to that, but you didn't promise so it's not like you'll bring spiders down on you if you do go grimoire diving later.

"More bad news?" Nytora asks.

"A bit," Gretchen admits, "I have no idea how to get you home. I'm pretty sure it's technically impossible."

"But Sunniva said I need a focus thing to stay here."

Gretchen GLARES at you. You make a defensive noise and back away.

"She's right. You need the focus, but removing it wouldn't send you home."

"Why not?"

"You're not from any other timeline," Gretchen says.

Nytora apparently glares pretty well to as the witch hastily continues.

"The spell they were using can't take a person from another time line. That's apparently more energy intensive than they were capable of. Instead they could use their magic to make a COPY of the person from the other timeline and link it to the other version to fill it with all their memories."

Nytora appears to shutdown.

"The next bit gets a bit technical but the spell is really thorough. It rather has to be. The thoroughness of it makes it so the world will force a way that ends with there being one Sunniva in the world," she continues on.

"And that's me?" you ask.

"That's whichever of you is currently the most stable. Seeing as Nytora requires a focus just to keep whatever end is coming from happening, you're obviously the more stable," she looks up and seems to remember something, "Unless you die. Then it'll go to the living version, Nytora. The world loves life or we'd all be dead."

You sneak a glance at Nytora. She doesn't look particularly murderous at the moment but she's having a rough day.

"But she's alright as long as she has the focus, right?" you ask desperately.

"Until it breaks or she takes it off, yeah," Gretchen nods.

"Why would it break?"

"It's currently stable temporally, probably moreso than anything else the wizards had, so it's not going to randomly succumb to the world getting rid of it easily. But eventually the other version will break it by recombining like the staff did. Which as you saw, left just the overcharged crystal that completely changed its purpose to something else."

"Wait, the staff gem changed?"

"I'm pretty sure before it was supposed to be a focusing implement but after recombining the wood bits have mysteriously vanished and the crystal changed."

"So what does that mean for me?" Nytora asks.

Oh good she's talking! And not murdering you! Double bonus!

"Any number of things. On the best end of things the two of you recombine to become a super lizard with all the traits of both of you. Or maybe you'll die here and all your memories will migrate back to the original version of you. Which would be pretty surprising to the original you but at least some bit of you survived."

You could live with the fusion thing. Except maybe the bird loving. Okay maybe you couldn't live with that, but the power is a nice though.

"Or?"

>>
>>40824735
[2/2]

"On the worst end of things you cease to exist from the universe and everyone forgets you ever existed? There are a lot of things that could happen," Gretchen shrugs, "Sometimes magic is random like that. I wish I could give you a more solid answer."

"So what's the good news?" you ask.

Gretchen blinks and then as to think about it. "The necklace she got from the wizards is the focus. The other things she has are a single use Ring of 'Don't smash your face into the ground falling,' not my name, a fork, and a small bottle of high proof whiskey."

"You need more good news," you tell her.

She ponders for a bit. "The focus is good for at least a week? Maybe a few longer? It'll last much longer than the book's stability enchantment since it's on a living thing. She will be reinforcing it just by having it."

Nytora has progressed to looking at her hands despondently. Still not murdering you. You're still calling this a win.

"I want my auntie," she says sadly.

Is there a way to extend the enchantment or apply it to other objects (or Nytora herself)?

I'm confused, you want a sensible lizard AND auntie?
>>
>>40824934
Compared to sunniva auntie IS sensible.

Not that that is that great of a standard.

"If we fused how would it work?" you ask.

The witch shrugs. "You may end up with two heads. You may end up with both minds in one head. You mind up with two bodies joined at the tail tip. It really could go just about any way."

"Could you make a new focus? Or just enchant Nytora?"

"Nope. That's out of my paygrade. You'd need a better enchanter. I'm just an alchemist and witch."

That's rather annoying. You look at Nytora and she stares off into space.

"I should get her back to Auntie. Hopefully before she gets any stabby ideas," you say, helping the other lizard up, "Thanks for that by the way."

"Not my fault. You paid for both of you to hear all that. If I think of anything else I should have told you I'll send a note. Or if I have any ideas for your problem. Let me know what happens. This is quite an unusual situation."

"Tell me about it. Thanks again Gretchen."

She waves as she heads back toward her house."Anytime!"

"Tell Aldera I said bye."

She nods and you haul off your dark twin back to auntie.

I'm sorry? Did you need something?
>>

Everyday we focus and bask and grow just a little bit more of our tail, we can do it friends
>>
>You'd need a better enchanter.
So.... to the village?
>>
So if we fuse, could She become our tail?
>>
>>40825095
I hope theres a way to allow her to say indeffinitely. I like her, and don't want her to go away.

You frog march your twin back out into the swamp. The journey back home is mercifully quiet. You see tracks indicating that something large and heavy rolled through. You're not sure what the tracks mean but something came through and it was big. This is enough for you to suggest the water route home. The water is actually refreshing and except for one jerk catfish that will make an excellent dinner you get home without incident.

Auntie and Kuru appear to be playing cooperative rock stacking. They're doing pretty well. Mom and the siblings are absent. OH! And dad isn't here. But you've never really noticed when he was here either.

There's an annoyed look from Auntie as you get Nytora into the house. She's needed coaxing most of the way. You give auntie a helpless shrug and gesture at the other lizard.

"What happened?" Auntie asks.

You sigh. "That takes some explaining."

Explaining takes you into the late afternoon.

So, our tail has come off?
>>
>>40825425
Man, where have you been? It's been gone for a while.

So guys, time to shadowrun. There is no way her focus running out ends well, at best it violently tears her from the universe and at worst we end up with her mind and ours fused and forced to not murder birds ever again. A fate worse than death. We need to find a way to stabilize her here. Also its not the worst thing ever seeing as in theory she has a similar family. Also we can make a whole bunch of yin yang jokes.
>>
>>40825267
Technically speaking thats impossible, eventually the focus will lose power and get erased from the universe because reasons. Literally speaking we could repeatedly just re-enchant it probably, possibly bind it to her, and maybe even just have her swallow it or implant it in her surgically (DEFINITELY A BAD IDEA). So yes, even in absolutes there are loop holes.

Those are certainly ways of interpreting what I said
