Your name is Takashi Wakui. You are a sixteen-year old boy in a world where half the population possesses Personas—manifestations of inner souls as demons, spirits or deities.

Recently, a game called AETHER was forcibly installed on your smartphone. You thought it was little more than a piece of nasty spyware, but it turns out that the consequences of playing it are significantly more far-reaching than thought to be. You were transported to a realm called the Blackened Void, where you fought monsters and gained your first Persona--Ippon-Datara of the Fool Arcana.

“Was that kaasan?” Shizuka asks, looking a little apprehensive.

“Yeah.” You respond. “She’s sending me to a Persona-user exclusive school. Akumachi-Kirijo, she said.”

“Ah, Akumachi-Kirijo.” Shizuka nods, spooning a mouthful of miso soup into her mouth. The grains and stock would've been manufactured inside special greenhouses, stationed in the part of Japan formerly known as Korea. “Didn't I beat them in the finals of the fighting tournament? Gosh, that was so long ago.”

“Only four years, nee-san. Kaasan isn’t accepting no as an answer, as usual.”

“She must really want the best for you.” Shizuka remarks, this time taking a drink of liquefied powder milk. “Akumachi-Kirijo is one of the most prestigious academies in the country, after all.”

You nod. Out of all the Persona-user oriented secondary schools in Japan, Akumachi-Kirijo was the one of the oldest and the most prominently renowned. Its graduates often turned out be strong in both the body and the mind. It was also private—the school fees were exorbitant, to say the least. A single term costed more Macca than all the pocket money you ever acquired in your life.

“Do your best, Takashi.” Shizuka takes another gulp of soup and grins widely. “Kaasan must think you’re capable of surviving there. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have let you through the door.”

“Yeah, wouldn’t want to let all that stock exchange revenue go to waste.” You drone, tapping the table-top slightly. “And why did you have to use the word survive…”

It’s a sunny day. The skies are clear, just like the last few. This is a good sign. The existence of Shadows on Earth had led to certain weathers being seen in a different light, fog or mist in particular. When condensed water vapour filled the streets, it was time to stay indoors and let the Anti-Shadow Operatives do their dirty work.

You brush your teeth, comb your hair and do all sorts of little things required for a day outside. You bid your sister goodbye and exit the apartment. You hammer the lift button and watch as the little red arrow slowly ascends towards your floor. While waiting, someone familiar arrives.

“Good morning, Takashi-san.” Celeste Tachibana says, jogging up towards you with a smile.

“Morning, Tachibana-san.” You respond, nodding. “Fancy meeting you here. You heading out today?”

“Yep!” Celeste skids to a halt. “There’s this school called Akumachi-Kirijo I’m going to. I’ve only seen pictures of it back in America, so I wanted to walk around it for a bit before the first semester starts.”

“Funny.” You mutter.

Celeste blinks. “What’s wrong?”

“I’m going there, too.”

“Really?” Celeste exclaims, her eyes sparkling. A smile as radiant as the sun forms on her lips. The lift door opens and the two of you enter. “Wow, we might end up in the same class! How’d you get in? Did you have to pass an entrance exam, too?”

“Nah.” You close your eyes and sigh. “My mother pulled some strings and let me through the door.”

Your ride descends. Celeste glances at you, her mouth now in a perfectly flat line. Her previous enthusiasm seems to have dissipated somewhat. “That’s…isn’t that nepotism?”

Silly Celeste, nepotism makes the world go round. How do you think the United States had George Bush Sr. and George Bush Jr. Or how about ancient kings of old? Lineages of Nepotism, even the popes were relatives of Kings.

“So, you’re gonna quit, then?” Celeste asks.

“Kaasan isn’t the type of person I can refuse.” You reply. “And well…I suppose a better education is a better education. It’ll be a clean start for me, so I shouldn’t complain too much.”

“Will you be okay? Akumachi-Kirijo is said to be pretty harsh. You only awakened your Persona a couple days ago.”

“Kaasan thinks I’m capable, so…”

The lift lands on the ground floor. A synthesized chime is rung. You and Celeste appear to have reached a silent agreement. The two of you are heading out to the Akumachi-Kirijo Academy for the Supernaturally Talented together. The thought of it is strangely comforting and warm. Your new neighbour’s optimistic and bright disposition helps a lot.

Electronic tickets are swiped in the underground railroads. Both of you board the city bullet train and hustle between rows and rows of people. Just because it’s final few days of the holidays doesn’t mean the trains won’t be crowded.

“Are all Japanese parents as strict as yours?” Celeste yells over the hubbub.

“Kaasan’s actually fairly light in comparison.” You answer. “She’s always given me the freedom to do what I wanted. Though, I think that’s only because she’s on business trips half the time and leaves nee-san to take care of me. Some parents are really tough on their kids, building their education from the group up. What about yours?”

Celeste looks ready to answer but then the train stops and the doors slide open. You exit with her and the question gets lost amidst small talk.

After leaving the District 2 station and walking a few blocks, you arrive at your destination.

“Okay, we’re here!” Celeste exclaims.

As expected, Akumachi-Kirijo looks rather posh, with its wrought-iron gates, state-of-the-art security systems and its lavishly designed exteriors. The place reeks of fortune and might. So this is the academy your mother attended in her youth and the one your sister defeated? You feel a little intimidated. A heavy weight seems to have suddenly dropped on your shoulders.

What will you do?

>>Ask Celeste for her opinion.

“So, you have a plan or anything?”

“Mm, I want to walk a tour of this academy.” Celeste answers. “For now though, let’s just head inside. They’ll probably have a help desk inside.”

You nod and move forward through the open gates. Akumachi-Kirijo is rather spacious, compared to other schools in the city. The courtyard is filled with patches of green grasses and even a few naturally grown trees. Maintaining them all in the present must cost a small fortune. The place is quiet. Only a few individuals mill around the concrete paths, most of them you guess to be teachers. The snow-white buildings loom ahead of you. The glass on each window has been polished to resemble ice.

The two of you take a short break in front a large chrome and titanium statue. Apparently it is of the founder of the Academy, along with her Persona. You briefly read the metal plague positioned on a sign in front of the replica.

‘This statue was built to commemorate the academy’s fiftieth anniversary. The woman displayed here is the Empress Misturu Kirijo and her Persona Artemisia. May her beauty, intellect and strength be an inspiration to all students who attend. Never forget that two in harmony surpasses one in perfection…’

She sounds like a pretty big shot. According to the profile, this Mitsuru Kirijo died in the 2060s. Though, her legacy lives on, considering just how far-reaching and expansive the Kirijo megacorporation is today.

“I would’ve liked to meet in her person.” Celeste says, a little wistfully.

“Why?” You ask.

“Because she sounds interesting to talk to.” She replies. “She must’ve seen a lot.”

“Yeah, I can imagine…”

The little impromptu tour of the courtyard continues. The two of you chat as the front building gets closer and closer. Though before you can reach it, a person blocks your path.

It is a female with stark-white hair, blood-red eyes and a pale complexion. She is dressed in a white uniform with a matching red tie. A clipboard is held in her hands. The other striking feature about her is her height, or a rather lack of it. She is as tall as you were at twelve years of age. The word ‘midget’ would not be inappropriate to describe her.

“Hello children.” The girl—no, height-challenged woman steps forward until she is close. “May I ask your purpose here?”

You and Celeste look at each other.

“We’re students here.” Celeste jumps in. “Well, prospective students. Both of us will be starting here in a few days.”

“I see.” The short woman nods. “Then it is acceptable for the two of you to be here. Let me be the first to welcome you to Akumachi-Kirijo.”

“Thanks.” You reply.

“My name is Veleis.” The woman continues. “I am a former Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapon of the AEGIS III android model. Now, I work as the teacher of Mythology and Mathematics at this academy. Perhaps you might have me as your homeroom teacher.”

“I’m Takashi Wakui.” You extend your hand.

“And my name is Celeste Tachibana! Nice to meet you!” Celeste does the same with a smile.

Veleis-sensei shakes both of your hands. She gazes at you. “Wakui? Are you, by any chance, Rumi Wakui’s son?”

You blink. “You know kaasan?”

“I was her homeroom teacher when she was in her third-year of high school.” Veleis-sensei reminisces. “She was always determined to push her limits and strive to be the best. Her ambition as an Empress was praiseworthy. “

Then Veleis-sensei’s face darkens somewhat. “Of course, it also means you are Shizuka Wakui’s younger brother. She took the trophy and broke our academy’s twenty-nine year streak.”
>>
>>40824086
>>We’re students.

You instinctively flinch and take a step backward. Celeste looks between the two of you, a touch concerned. “Uh…sorry about that.”

“You do not have to apologize.” The android teacher returns to her normal, calm tone. “A little humility turned out to be good for our students, in the long run.”

“Wow, Veleis-sensei,” Celeste comments. “You knew Takashi-san’s mother? How long have you been teaching here?”

“Almost twenty years.” Veleis-sensei turns around and waves her hand for you and Celeste to follow. “Come with me. If you are going to take a tour of this academy, we need to get you both visitor badges.”

“Oh, okay.” You say. “Say, are there any tour guides available today?”

“No. They have all been booked.” Veleis-sensei states simply. Celeste’s mouth drops open. Then she gives you both a small yet cheeky grin. “Luckily for the two of you, my workload happens to be light today. I can spare the time to give you a run-down of our facilities.”

“Awesome!” Celeste cries, and sprints forward.

You enter the main lobby of the school. Veleis-sensei strolls over to the receptionist and proceeds to sort out everything for you. Two crimson badges with the school’s label carved into it are passed over the counter. You and Celeste put them on immediately.

Ente turns to you. “Wakui-kun. Is there anywhere you would prefer us to start with?”

“The studious type, are you?” Veleis-sensei raises an eyebrow. “Good. That’s what I like to hear.”

>Your UNDERSTANDING has increased by 1 points.

Veleis-sensei strides forward and you follow. It was hard to believe that this woman was not a human, but an android. Not a single hint of stiffness could be found in her movements. Technology had advanced to the point where hair, skin and faces of AI could seem perfectly natural and not made out of silicon and metallic alloys. Whoever came up with the prototypes for this kind of stuff must’ve been a total genius and probably employed by Kirijo too.

“So sensei, if you’re an AEGIS III android, does it mean your Arcana is the Chariot?” Celeste asks. Your footsteps tread on polished floors. Electronic hologram billboards, full of information about the various faculties around the academy, are skimmed past.

“You’re a sharp one.” Veleis-sensei comments. “Yes, like all of my kin, I am the Chariot. My Persona is Pallas Athena. It’s a standard one, but useful nonetheless.”

The tour stops briefly at on the second floor of one of the main buildings. “These are your main homeroom classrooms.” Veleis-sensei gestures to them. They are numbered from 2-A all the way down to 2-F. “Roll-call, class activities and the like will take place here. Akumachi-Kirijo is a competitive place, so all of the class groups frequently play against each other in competitions. The class who emerges victorious at the end of the year will receive a special reward.”

You are then shown various other classrooms around the school.

“Akumachi-Kirijo’s teaching structure adopts a few methods from tertiary education.” Veleis-sensei continues. “You will have lectures in theatres and practical work in classrooms.”

Damn, this is a big lecture theatre. Easily enough to hold up to two hundred students at maximum capacity. The assembly auditorium is most likely enormous, you realize.

You are taken to the front entrance again. Veleis-sensei motions over to a virtual display ona wall.

“Our academy has a number of extracurricular activities run by other students. It is highly recommended that you do not join the Going Home Alone club.”

“Hey Takashi-san.” Celeste begins.

“What’s up?”

She points to the holographic display. “What kind of clubs are you going to choose? I think I might join the fencing team…”

>>Martial arts club, perhaps.

You have a Persona now. Ippon-Datara’s strength is flowing through your veins. It’s practically your duty to tame and develop that power. That’s what your mother and your sister did. You don’t want to remain weak; you no longer have the excuse of being ordinary. Besides, you’ve got a nightmarish other dimension full of Shadows to worry about. Training your body will help overcome the trials it will undoubtedly throw at you.

“I wouldn’t be so hasty, kids.” Veleis-sensei says. “Think carefully about your judgements.”

“How many clubs are we allowed to join at a time?” You ask.

“Three. But most students opt to join only two.” Veleis looks back and forth between you two. “Shall we head off? I’ll take you both outside.”

You move to follow. Then you stop.

A ghostly whisper floats through your ears. You blink and swivel your head to the left. Floating down a corridor is unmistakeably a blue butterfly. For one, such insects don’t exist inside Akumachi City except in zoos. You notice that there are holes in its wings and its fluttering is unbalanced and jittery.

“Wakui-kun.” Veleis-sensei’s voice goes. “Try and keep up.”

“…sorry.” You mumble. But somehow you don’t feel like following. All your normal priorities have been shot.

The butterfly disappears out of sight. A strange premonition takes over you. It is as if something is beckoning you to come closer. You reach into the pocket and withdraw the cobalt-velvet colored key. You received this after waking up this morning and you can’t recall where you got it. It’s glowing faintly. You turn to stare down the corridor. Whatever down there is making the key respond.

“Takashi-san?” Celeste’s voice snaps you out of the trance. “You comin’?”

“Sorry, I need a bathroom break.” You mutter and enter the corridor.

“That’s not where the toilets are.” Veleis-sensei calls. You ignore her. The urge to race down the corridor is overwhelmingly strong, like a pair of electromagnets hurtling through the air towards each other.

A cobalt blue door at the end of the hallway, with runes and inscriptions of different shapes and legibility carved on it. That is what you see. The blue butterfly is nowhere to be seen. The door glows with a mystical force, of dreams and the roads in between. Without any emotion, you stride up to it and take out the blue key in your pocket.

You shove it into the lock. It is a perfect fit. The door swings open without so much as a creak or a hiss. You enter.

Immediately, you are sent straight into darkness. Yet, you do not panic. Yes, this is familiar. You’ve definitely been here before. A faint light is winking in the distance. You know that is where you need to go next.

Eventually, you wind up in a space consisting of an ornate wooden chair, a few melting candles and a few hazy figures sitting in the distance. The moment you arrive, they raise their heads and leer nastily at you.

“Welcome back to the Velvet Room, Weakest One!” The girl chirps.

“Take a seat, will you?” The boy smirks. “We need to go over a few things.”

“Remember what we talked about last time? You possess the power of the Wild Card. You can handle multiple Personas at a time.”

“In the past, the Wild Cards would receive Personas from the corpses of the fallen enemies.” The girl continues. “They would take them back to the Velvet Room for fusion and deposit. Of course, this was in the old days, when the Velvet Room was controlled by a bunch of stodgy old men and their assistants!”

“The rules have changed now.” The boy declares. “Fusion is unavailable to you. You will not receive Personas from the Blackened Void or any other areas. Instead, you shall obtain them directly from us.”

“The power of the Fool comes from your bonds! It’s hard to imagine that someone as pathetic as you would have friends, but oh well.” The girl giggles. “Whenever you begin a new bond of a specific Arcana, come back here to receive your new Persona!”

“Increasing the strength of your bonds will cause their respective Personas to grow stronger.” The boy then takes out a thick, leather-bound book and slams it down on a nearby table. The thing is heavy enough to crush a small cat to death. He then grins. “Over the course of a bond, or Social Link’s, lifespan, you will be given the chance to gain new Personas from the respective Arcana. Your old ones will be stored in the Persona Compendium, here.”

“Of course, you can only wield three Personas at a time, including your current one.” The girl points towards you. “Choose them wisely.”

“We’re feeling generous today, so we’ll make it so that withdrawing a Persona from the Compendium won’t cost you anything.” The boy’s wide smile becomes downright ferocious. “Don’t make us change our minds.”

“That’s a huge advantage over the previous Wild Cards, nii-san!” The girl chuckles. “I guess we have to do it, otherwise this kid might end up dying halfway through his journey!”

“Now, let’s see what bonds you have, kid.” The boy flips open the Compendium and scans through the pages. “Ah, I see. You’ve started a bond of the Magician with the girl named Celeste Tachibana. Well then, let’s get to it.”

The tarot cards soar through the air and float back down into a deck. The boy reaches into his coat and draws out three different cards. He tosses them into the air. They descend, resting in front of you. You see three different Personas of the Magician Arcana in front of you…

“Go on, kid. Pick your poison.”

The details of the three Personas pop into your mind.

PIXIE: A very basic Persona of the Magician Arcana. It is a faerie found in southwest Britain. It is cheerful and loves to play pranks. Pixie is a purely magic focused Persona, mostly used to heal combatants and fire lightning. Its tiny stature makes it different for Pixie to tank physical attacks. Many consider it to be weak, but some academics say that Pixie has a lot of untapped potential.
-Resists electricity, has no weaknesses.
[Known moves]
>Zio (Light electrical damage, 1 enemy)
>Dia (Slightly Heals one ally)
>Patra (Dispels confusion, fear or rage from 1 ally)

OROBAS: A basic Persona of the Magician Arcana. It is a prince of hell, appearing as a horse with a human torso. Despite this status, Orobas is relatively common among the Magician population. Orobas is also a magically focused Persona, but its relatively high speed makes it decent for fast attackers. Its endurance is a bit lacking, though.
-Resists wind, weak to ice.
[Known moves]
>Garu (Light wind damage, 1 enemy)
>Sukukaja (Increases agility/evasion, 1 ally)
>Hysterical Slap (Light physical damage to 1 enemy, small chance of rage)

JACK FROST: One of the more well-known Personas of the Magician Arcana. It an elf-like creatures that is the embodiment of all that is cold. Jack Frosts quickly became popular due to their many variants and cute appearance. You’ll often see them as toys or vendor merchandise. Jack Frost is also magically focused, albeit somewhat more versatile than its kin.
-Absorbs ice, weak to fire.
[Known Moves]
>Bufu (Light ice damage, 1 enemy)
>Sonic Punch (Light physical damage to 1 enemy)
>Re Patra (Assists one ally who has been knocked down)

The card is enveloped in a bright white light. When it fades, the Persona in question is hovering in front of you. She is absolutely minuscule .

“Hi there, mister!” She squeaks. “My name is Pixie of the Magician Arcana. Take care of me, will you?”

She fades away and the tarot card is deposited in front of you. You take it and place it in your pocket.

“Listen closely, kid.” The boy says, cocking an ear. “Can you feel the effect of your bond on your Persona?”

He’s right. A surge of power flows straight through you. Pixie is giggling excitedly in your mind. She is about to learn a new move…

>>Elec Break

You examine this new skill. It is designed to destroy the electrical resistances of your enemies. Nullifications, resistances, absorptions and reflections will become normal resistance. Normal resistance will become a weakness. The only downside is that the mana required to summon it is absurdly high. To cast it once would require you to empty half your magic capacities. You have a feeling this might change in the future…

“And that’s how the current Persona system works, kid.” The boy says. “Let’s see here…once you reach stage three or four of the Magician’s bond, we’ll grant you a new Persona. They’ll also be of the Magician Arcana and the one you choose will replace Pixie. You can still retrieve her from the Compendium at any time. If you think you can avoid us altogether just using the starting Persona, forget it!”

“You’ll die if you do. The Personas of a Wild Card grow slowly! Grinding for experience was useless for the Last Word and those who came before her.” The girl states. “They had to keep coming back to the Velvet Room to fuse. Although Weakest One, you’re a bit faster than your predecessors.”

“Nevertheless, return to the Velvet Room to receive stronger Personas. That is, if you want to overcome the trials…” The boy smirks. “Ippon-Datara is a bit of an anomaly mind you. It will grow at a normal rate, like many other Persona-wielding humans.”

“Nii-san, do you think that it might undergo metamorphosis?”

“Who knows? To the humans, Persona metamorphosis is still an unfamiliar science.” The boy says. “Of course, we know everything about it. Alright kid, go back to your world. You’ve got unfinished business there, no?”
>>
The darkness is replaced by a vast field of white, and you hear a door slamming shut. You open your eyes to find yourself back in Akumachi-Kirijo, standing in front of the Velvet Room door.

“Was that a dream?” No, it couldn’t have been. The gateway to the murky room is still in front of you. You reach and withdraw the essence of the Magician Arcana from your soul. Yup, there it is. The tarot card of the Magician, representing action, initiative, self-confidence and talent. The two eyes of the picture stare back up at you.

Previous Wild Cards could switch between Personas, right? You give it a try. Ippon-Datara disappears from the forefront of your mind and the mischievous figure of Pixie springs into your mind. The change is almost instantaneous. You flex your fingers again and the tarot card springs back into the Fool. You do this a few times, swapping between your two Personas.

“Wow…” You grin. “This is amazing…”

“What’s amazing?”

Someone taps you on the shoulder.

“Oh shit!” You shriek and jump up like a feline recently been electrocuted. Slowly, you turn around.

Celeste Tachibana is frowning at you, her arms crossed. You catch the faint noises of songs playing through her twin headphones. “Takashi-san, what are you doing?” she asks.

You gulp.

>>Make up convincing lie.

Celeste is leaning forward and narrowing her eyes at you. Beads of sweat trickle down your face. To reveal the abilities of the Wild Card would be utterly terrible. You need to come up with a fib, and fast.

“I was, uh…” you sweat. “Inspecting my email box! Yeah! I’ve been having a lot of spam now that I’ve received my Persona license.”

“Spam?” Celeste repeats, not looking very convinced.

“You know? Stuff like ‘hot High Priestesses in your area’ or ‘The existence of android idols! Has science gone too far? Answer this survey now!’. You get what I mean?”

“Oh, that kind of stuff.” Celeste nods slowly, “You do know there’s a blacklist available on the Internet for free?”

“Really?” You reply, smiling nervously as if you were a travelling salesman inches away from having your secrets uncovered. “Kaasan got my Persona license sorted for me, so I wouldn’t know about that. Hahaha….”

“Search it on Google. It’s on the first page.” Celeste says, sucking on that omnipresent lollipop of hers. Her expression turns puzzled for a moment. “But…why did you run all the way down here?”

You freeze. “Um…”

“Well, you are a Hermit. So I guess you needed time for some introspection.”

“Isn’t that…racist or something?” You say. The two of you begin to walk down the corridor. According to your phone’s clock, only a few minutes have passed. Time must pass differently in the Velvet Room.

“It’s arcanist.” Celeste corrects. “And no, not really. Just a stereotype. Sorry if it offended you.”

“Nah, it’s fine…”

Inwards, you breathe a major sigh of relief. Celeste appears to have bought the lie, no matter how ridiculous it was.

The tour continues. Veleis-sensei takes you to the outside sports fields, the dojo (an existence that still amazes you), the assembly hall and other miscellaneous places. You have to admit, this does look like a pretty nice school. You might enjoy it here. All things, including tours, have to end and you find yourself back at the reception. You and Celeste hand back the visitor badges. Veleis-sensei steps forward and shakes both your hands.

“I hope that both of you enjoyed this tour and are looking forward for the beginning of the semester.” She smiles. “School starts next Tuesday, on the 4th of April. Please do not forget!”

“Don’t worry sensei,” Celeste reassures. “We’ll definitely do our best!”

The two of you exit Akumachi-Kirijo and enter the heavy crowds of the main city. Celeste stretches her arms and yawns. You check the time on a nearby display. It’s near lunch. Your stomach rumbles a tad. Maybe it’s time to get some food…

“Sure!” Celeste looks pleased at your offer. “Will you be paying?”

“Yes, why?” You ask. It wasn’t like you were too short on money. That 6000 Macca you received from the Blackened Void hadn’t gone anywhere.

“Don’t worry about it. I can pay for myself.”

You eye her. “Will you be okay?”

She sticks her tongue out. “I’m not that poor, Takashi-kun!” She laughs.

The two of you take a seat and order toasted sandwiches and coffee. Said coffee is most likely partially made out soybeans and also simulated, but it doesn’t matter. Tastes alright. You munch on toasted cheese and bread as Celeste takes a sip.

“So, why did you move to Japan?” You ask.

“My father wanted me to study in a country with a high Persona-user population.” Celeste replies. “It sounded like a nice change, so I accepted.”

“So America doesn’t have a lot of Persona-users?”

“Not as much as Japan. Only around thirty percent. Japan has, like, over fifty percent.” Celeste remarks. “I’m really glad I bothered to keep up with my Japanese back home.”

“Yeah, otherwise you would’ve had a lot of trouble…” You mutter. Foreigners like Celeste weren’t as uncommon as they used to be. Ever since Japan took over Korea and the water between them, the country had been slowly rising in the economic world as a new world superpower. Its advances in artificial intelligence and vast number of Persona wielders only helped its rise to fame. “Do you miss your friends?”

“Of course. But I can chat them over the Internet…”

You spent lunch eating and hanging out with Celeste. She appears to appreciate your company. Your relationship with her could become closer soon…

You decide to open up your computer and read some of the textbooks prescribed by Akumachi-Kirijo. You had paperback copies, rare in this age, but they would take some day to arrive. In the meantime, you’ve received keys for virtual versions, so you’ll put them to use.

Some of these books you’ve never seen. ‘Basic Mythology for Third-Years’, ‘A Comprehensive List of Known Personas’, ‘Computer Science for Secondary Students’…might as well tackle them one by one. On the plus side, regular subjects like science, English and history are there. Although, your history textbook is one focused specifically on the past of Personas and notable users.

‘There are currently three known tiers of magical elements. At tier 1 are basic spell elements: Fire (Agi), Ice (Bufu), Wind (Garu), Electricity (Zio), Earth (Tera) and Healing (Dia). Tier 2 contains more advanced spells: Light (Hama), Mudo (Darkness), Elemental Breaks, Elemental Walls, buffing and debuffing skills etc. Tier 3 is the highest tier and contains the Megido almighty spells, as well as the Nuclear (Frei), Gravity (Gry) and Psychic (Psy) skills…’

‘A Turing Machine is defined as follows…’

‘World War III began in 2041…’

All of this is confusing, but you’re a beginner so it’s to be expected. You persist and learn something…

[10:00 pm, 1-Apr-2129]

From a nearby shopping mall, Celeste Tachibana exits. There is a jubilant smile on her face. The music and cosmetics stores of Akumachi City were so wonderful. Definitely much better than what was available back in Texas. Japan truly was the up-and-coming place to be. She found herself glad to have moved here. Once she got a part-time job, she would come here and buy something nice.

The night is cool. Cars, controlled by their automatic AI, flow past in busy traffic. Shoppers haul off their loot to their homes, joking and talking. Celeste makes a break for the nearest crossroads. From there, it was a short walk to her current apartment.

Her cellphone rings. Curious, Celeste reaches into her pocket and retrieves it. She is unaware of this fact, but her reaction is the same as her male neighbour.

>AETHER, an open-world RPG survival game
>Version 2.01 BETA

Really, what was this application? It had latched onto her OS this morning and refused to come off. She didn’t remember installing it. She didn’t really like video games, either. AETHER. The name must mean something in a long-forgotten language, but she did not have the motivation to seek it out.

A message pops up on the screen. She studies it.

>[IMMUTABLE] On 1-Apr-2129 at 10:10 pm, there will be a car crash in Akumachi City. Many lives will be lost, while even more will be injured.

>AETHER doesn’t seem to be responding, so you guess it’s okay to sleep…
Damn it, Takashi! Don't you understand how dramatic irony works? We're going to wake up in our Safehouse, just you watch.

>>40828897
Oh, I guess that's a good thing, then, if Celeste is going to wind up in the Blackened Void. Fine, you get a pass this time, Wakui. This time.

Honestly, what is the matter with this? The text had been all jumbled and scrambled, as if it had spent several hours rolling in virtual mud. Now it was clear? This was completely nonsensical. She closes her phone and stares into the distance.

“I wonder what Takashi-san will be doing tomorrow…” Maybe the two of them could hang out.

She waits at the side of the pavement for the way to be cleared. In roughly ten minutes, the little man turns green and the crowd surges forward. A sea of bodies, jostling towards their destination.

Celeste is halfway across the street when the incident happens.

An autonomous car in the distance receives a fatal error in its programming. It sets its engines to maximum and speeds forward. It closes the distance in less than seconds, as if it were the terrible rampaging horse of Death itself. The crowd has barely any time to react before the vehicle hits.

It just so happens to be that Celeste is right in its path. Bodies are smashed flying. She turns her head around.

“What…”

The car roars in front of her.

She sees the driver’s horrified expression.

She is next. Her eyes instinctively close.

Time slows to a crawl. It halts. The world turns monochrome.

And yet, Celeste is still moving regularly. Her eyelids open. She gapes at the frozen faces around her. She twists and turns her body. She tries to call for help, yell something. The opportunity is lost to her.

A shadowy arm grabs her ankles. She whips her line of sight down. Beneath her is a pool of darkness. More and more arms reach out, snaking around her waist, neck and legs. They pull, sending her tumbling into the emptiness below. She barely has time to scream before the void swallows her completely.

Time resumes. The vehicle continues its crash. Force against force creates an explosion. Bodies are splattered across into masses of blood and flesh. Wailing commences, both of ambulances and the frightened populace. Paramedics arrive on the scene, using Diarahan and Amrita to sooth the wounds of the hurt. There is so much work to be done. Come dawn, no-one in Akumachi City would realize that the half-American girl Celeste Tachibana would have gone missing.

Except for one person.

[8:00 am, 2-Apr-2129]

It is morning of the new day.

You wake up, brush your teeth, stand under hot water in the shower, get dressed in proper clothes and open your phone to see that AETHER sent you more messages while you were asleep. The first one is a bunch of updates, from the mysterious developers.

>Added an ultra-high quality setting for textures and shadows.
>Increased VR performance and fixed a number of bugs.
>Added new loot and safehouse building options.
>Fixed a bug where notifications would not show up on the display. Sorry about this!
>Updated spell definitions.
>Increased difficulty a little.
>Added several new secret locations.

The other two are found in the NOTIFICATIONS box.

>[CLEARED] On 1-Apr-2129 at 9:00 pm, there will a car crash in Akumachi City. Several lives will be lost, while many more will be injured. The damage will rack up to millions of Japanese Macca. Following this, the second player—Celeste Tachibana—will join the game.

>[MAX PRIORITY] On 3-Apr 2129 at 12:00 pm, the immolated corpse of Celeste Tachibana will be found in Akumachi-City. Except we don't actually know how to enter the Blackened Void, just exit it. Hopefully a tutorial for that will pop up.

Don't worry about it, Thorn, at least this way we get a good cliffhanger. See you next time, man. Thanks for running.

You did a really good job in the ways you bring characters into MC'S sphere of influence. Also, I get the feeling MC is behaving like patient 0 or 1 of a disease, in this case the Aether.

Oh shit nigga you might be right.

We could be spreading that thing to everyone in our.. Deck? Aw man people are grouping up in decks because everyone's a fucking tarot card. This shit is just weird.

There is a typo here. It should be 'On 3-Apr-2129 at 12:00 am'. That is to say, midnight.
