Magic cannot exist outside of a firm physical Medium. Fireballs and portals are unheard of. But within a Medium, typically crystal, magic can exist, and thrive. It can change the physical facets of its Medium. So while you could not throw a bolt of lightning, your staff's crystal sphere could crackle with a wild charge of it.

Eventually, with the advent of steel, and the discovery of metal's naturally crystalline structure, it was declared the greatest Medium to exist. Long staves of steel with beautiful latticework were crafted, but one magus - known only as the First - desired a simpler, lighter, more practical staff.

And so the first Spellblade was born, a simple weapon with a cross-shaped hilt and a long blade. It had little in the way of enchantment, and needed little. The only spell that suffused it was perfect sharpness, and this pleased the First.

Soon others mimicked the First, making their own Spellblades, naming them, weaving more and more intricate spells, some that made them wildly heavy or light at the user's whim, others that heated the blade well past the melting point of steel, and so on. When Metallurgists - the name for these magi of the sword - clashed, it was with their blade, and the shards of broken blades of these duels were well-sought after, for they still held the old, constantly folded upon themselves spells within.

Dynasties formed around the blades, and their care and use was made into an institution - the Blacksmithing Arts.

Soon there arose Ten Families, one family holding the Kingship over the Ten Lands.

And the king rules in peace over these ten lands, while the families bicker and squabble over petty land, power, fame and money.

You can have anything you want. All the best dresses, all the best food. The purest iron and the most advanced steelmaking methods. All the jewels and etched crystals that glow with pretty colors. And it sounds cliche, but you can't have the one thing you want:

Freedom.

The estate and major exhibitions are the only places you can go, and even the latter requires an honor guard. And while they are not rude or even ugly, they are stonefaced, quiet, and utterly impassive. An attempt to flirt with one earned nothing but a glare from your father, head of the family.

And so you sit in a shaded royal box, drinking chilled drinks (in crystal chalices made for just such a thing) and watch a duel begin. Donmagus and Roths. A dispute for... something, you can't quite remember. Something like the heart of a young man, or the like. Donmagus wears heavy armor, making it difficult to tell it is one of their daughters rather than a son, whereas Roths' put forth an elegant woman with a slender sword - an interesting counterpart to the Don's massive barely-even-a-blade.

This is a real match. Someone could even die, you reflect, sipping from the chalice.

Neither of these are even family blades. They're Single Spell Swords, made over the course of a week, for this match expressly.

"Watch closely, Alana." your father states, handsome and regal as always. "This is where fortunes are made and lost."

"I know, father." you reply. "But how could Rothschilde hope to win this? That small blade will shatter on blow one."

"...Is that what you think?" he asks, amused, as the armored Donmagus fighter closes the distance, and swings with all his might - only to stop with soft 'tink' as the blades touch.

No, that's not right. At the very moment of impact, the massive weapon simply /stopped/.

"So, tell me Alana: What sort of spellery is at work, on the Rothschilde's part?"

>Cont

"She clearly managed to attack fast enough to stop the blade."

Your father raises an eyebrow. "An interesting hypothesis." he says, sounding a little disappointed.

You sip the chilled drink and nearly spit it out when the glowing, humming weapon is pointed at the Donmagus fighter - who you must remind yourself, is female - and launches forth, dragging along its elegantly-dressed weilder. There are some cheers as the dress flutters, making you roll your eyes as the blade skitters along the massive sword, scoring it in a long line. How will the smaller weapon keep its edge.

"She forgot something important." your father says, as the armored combatant slams a fist into the woman's silk-covered gut, making her curl up - an iron knee to the face follows, sending her on her back. "This is a real match."

The Donmagus raises her weapon, slamming it onto the sword with a strangely stopped 'tink' again, making it hum and glow once more.

"Any idea who may win?" you father asks, shifting in his seat as the massive sword is raised again.

"Methinks a draw."

"Unlikely, but..."

The second blow sends the smaller sword glowing brighter than before, like a tiny sun. "That cannot be safe." he says, frowning, as the girl screams. "There would only be one time where the smaller blade is open to assault."

"When?"

"When it's expending its gathered energies. So..."

The two blades collide, the smaller rocketing like a launched arrow, the larger one looming like an unstoppable glacier. Even with a reach advantage...

They collide in a sonorous clash, which rings out across the arena. The two close off the clash, stumbling away... both barely cracked. "Interesting!" your father says with a grin.

So the higher kinetic impact allowed the smaller sword to damage the larger one. But what is the magical ability of the bigger one, anyway?

The Donmagus lowers her helmet, a canine design clear. The chosen animal of the house - the wolf. She sets her sword before her, and a low growling roars from the blade, and her armor begins to glow with a soft, russet red.

The blade begins to glow along with it, but differently, from the core out.

"Oh, oh!" you find yourself jump in excitement as the cracks begin to vanish from the large weapon, and with a swing, it rests on the Donmagus's shoulder, radiating a powerful heat.

She points at the elegant opponent, then makes a rude gesture, making your father laugh.

You lean back, frowning. How could you enjoy this? You don't know these people, you couldn't. Not in your damned gilded cage.

And then the younger woman charges again, leaping up. She slaps her blade halfway to the Donmagus - and floats in midair, and swings her blade up.

"What." you manage, as she flies upwards, more of another jump, as she slaps the blade again before she slows. Again, once she starts to fall she does it again. And again, and again - flipping and floating about with the sound of her smacking the steel. She's stealing kinetic energy from herself?!

"Clever!" your father states, as Donmagus grows impatient, moving in to swing a wide, feiry arc - only to be stopped midswing by an upside-down Rothschilde, who uses the speed gained to blast past her opponent, landing behind her.

"Is this your idea of preparing me for rule, father? Watching two women strangers fight over the heart of a boy I never met?" you ask. "Surrounded, I add, by men who cannot engage with me for fear of their balls?"

"Alana!" he says, frowning. "Now is not the time for your temper."

"I daresay anytime is the time." you grumble, as Rothschilde slices through some of the armor's strapping on the woman's side, making the red glow vanish on her chest and belly - and her movements grow more sluggish.

But the larger woman won't give in so easily - she turns, swinging the blade high - and when her foot lands, the swing dodged, her fist slams into her opponent's belly, launching her a good fifteen feet to a cheer.

"You deserve better than the games they play." your father says bitterly. "You'd thank me if you knew."

"Those Games, father, they are what life are." you say, pointing with the chalice. "Look at them - their passion and their desire. That's living. I don't know what lead them to this point, but... Watching them only makes me envious, because at least they get to feel. Were I a corpse on strings, few would notice save that I'd be more well-behaved."

You say, as the two clash again and again. The Donmagus's armor is broken in places, helmet cast aside, bright blue eyes of fury bared again under a shade of blonde long hair. Her opponent, with black hair and green eyes, torn dress, burns on one arm, is resolute. Both blades are cracked nearly to breaking, leaking energies.

"Let me out, father. At least for this. At least for something."

"You may die! I have no other children!"

"... If I die, then it'd be no different than the current state of things."

They clash again, the blades both shattering, pieces flying past your face, flicking your hair and thudding into the stands. "I wonder how they're going to resolve things now?" you ask, pouring out your drink and leaving - a few guards hurry to follow you as your father stands.

>Go home. At least your room is cool and comfortable, easy to think in.

You're no good at escaping the guards - many of them have known you since you were a child, even though you're an adult now. They know your ways, and the younger ones know the consequences for attempted seduction of you. Therefore, feminine wiles were closed off from you, and have atrophied comically dead.

So you let them follow you to the smithy, and you look over the materials there with a frown, picking up an iron bar with both hands, letting out a cry as the edges of it dig into your uncalloused hands. None of the guards move to help as you try to load the furnace, stumbling in your finery, growing more desperate.

By the time your father arrives, the furnace is smouldering, your dress is covered with ash and torn, and you're on the verge of frustrated tears.

"..." he looks down at you, frowning, then sighs. "Come with me." he says, and you find yourself complying by instinct.

You enter the study, a place you were never allowed into, and he shuts the door behind you. "it's clear to me I cannot hold you much longer. You need some form of escape." he says, looking out a window. "Alana, what do you want from freedom the most? Be honest with me. I need to know so I can at least reduce the risks involved. Please understand my position as king."

"I want to live, laugh, love, and sometimes lose. I want to feel all the ups and downs that life has to offer. How can I enjoy having a chilled drink on a hot day if I have never gone a hot day without a chilled drink?"

He considers for a moment.
"Then you'll need to make a blade. I shall summon the family forgemaster to teach you." he says, "And there is a ball in a few days, in the Anansi manor. You will be going. Without a guard." he says, "You will borrow one of my old Spellblades for the occasion, just in case." he says. "Otherwise, you must remain with a single guard at most times. ...Douglas should do. He's young, but has talent."

You raise an eyebrow.
"Douglas, father? Truly."

"Indeed. You want to experience life? Very well. Do not complain when it turns you on your heel and makes you dizzy." he sighs and shrugs. "I need some brandy." he grumbles, walking past you, probably to do what he just said. You're stunned - you expected more resistance, what game of this is his? Douglas is among the youngest of the Honor Guard, the first you had asked explicitly to guard you.

And Anansi is one of the first houses you showed any interest in to him. It makes no sense.

You stare out the window at the veiw of Donmagus's holdings - a mountainous land filled with snow. You ponder how she's doing now, after the match. Hm.

I remember someone in the QMC saying how they were similar. Didn't think they'd be so right
>>
So, Idea for our sword. Legion, the Many-Sword. Due to chronomantic fuckery, it hits multiple times simultaneously and even from multiple directions, essentially giving us multiple chances to coup de gras an opponent. The reason it's called the many sword is because it's actually multiple identical swords occupying the same space, each one (and it's wielder), moving in a different direction for a different strike at the moment of impact.
>>
>>40841490
You move to study books of magic, but most of the logic eludes you. There's years of learning you're missing. You're behind literally everyone else at this point, in almost every aspect. The forgemaster will have his work cut out for him, for sure. You learn a few words of power, like the word for Sword, but it just feels all so disconnected and confusing. What you learn quickly, though, is that magery is done as part of the smithing process, hammered into the steel with practiced beat and song. Spells are strengthened by using new words of similar power and a reforging process, folding the spell on itself.

But you close the book with little more than a headache and a lot of confusion. You still have a few hours before the forgemaster arrives, and you've still got the sooty, torn dress that marks your previous failure. With a groan, you lean back in the chair, tossing the book onto the table and looking at the ceiling - or rather, into Douglas's face.

He's more cute than handsome, with eager blue eyes and untamable red hair, his features slowly moving from boyhood into manhood - his jaw is more defined than before, but he still has that goofy smile you liked. He looks almost out of place in his shield, breastplate, and spear, helmet pushing down his tufty hair.
"Shall I get you some glasses?" he asks, jokingly. "Or shall I dictate the..." he picks up the book, "Advanced principles of the Arts?!" he laughs. "Methinks a bit too advanced for you, Princess.'

>The only "good faith" participants you're going to get are people who don't know you.

That's not true, I know him, and I've been voting in good faith. A lot of decisions he's made have been disappointing, but that's not a reason to waste my time ruining a quest I don't enjoy.
>>
>>40843713
Unfortunately a bunch of these people don't feel the same way
>>
>>40843713
The issue is that Ego doesn't deal with Trolls well. I suspect some form of high-functioning autism (I know what it's like to deal with it). Thus, I have been voting in good faith because, so long as people do that and don't troll, EGO's actually a pretty decent QM.

It's just that people know he's easy to troll, and this is 4chan.
>>
Do we have to have a sword?
I mean, it's the metal itself that holds the enchantment, has nothing to do with the shape.

I think a mace or a battleaxe would be pretty cool, just for the sake of rebelling against the system.
>>
I like the idea of this quest and want to see it succeed. I have an enormous boner for sword magi.

Do I like EGO as a QM? Only rarely. He has the ability, but he lets trolls get in the way.
Do I like EGO personally? Not really.
Do I like the horde of awful players that flock to an EGO quest, like carrion birds trailing an army? Fuck no.

But, I like sword magic. And so I shall remain here, trying very hard to keep things on track.

>>40844285
Jesus fucking christ you're like that kid who thinks you can only use wands to cast magic and the rest is HERESY.
What is wrong with trying to be creative on ways that most people can't deal with?
If everyone is used to fighting enchanted swords using an enchanted shield or enchanted spear will give you some advantage if only due to novelty.
>>
>>40844285
And he's one of them, also putting forth his suggestion.

>>
>>40844327
I like the idea of seating the magic in our armor.
But it might have to be in one continuous piece, and that would be impossible for armor, unless we do each plate individually.
>>
I think that, as it is a sword magus quest, it is quite arbitrary that we use a sword. It would be neat if there was a quest of making magic weapons, but for now, let's just do some nice magic swords and get rekt.
>>
>>40844285

"The place of a guard is to be silent, boy." you state, feeling insulted. Still - he has a point. You don't know where to start. You return to your room and pick out a new dress, this one far more plain and breathy than the other. By the time you finish changing, and found another, more friendly book, the forgemaster returns. Old, wrinkled, and a lot like old leather, Darl has been one of your only friends allowed you, though he taught you little about the Art.

Until now.

"Yer realize, milady, that this be rough work. It is not easy, on yer mind or your body. Ye sure?"
"I am certain!" you state.

"Alright, then. First you learn to forge. Follow me."

The next ten hours are some of the most grueling, horrible, and rewarding of your life. You are burned, you hammer your own fingers, you stain your dress and stink of sweat. But by the night's end...

"I admit there's some talent, there. Some work, and you could make a passable sword, or even better. For now, this knife will do." he says, turning over the fat blade in his hands. "Congratulations. Treasure it - it's the first thing you made with yer own two hands, eh?"

You laugh, a nervous, happy laughter. The small knife has blood and sweat and tears from your whole day in it - it's hard to see it as anything but beautiful, despite it being cracked, blackened, and warped.

It is, indisputably, yours.

"Now, then." the forgemaster says, "To magic. For the next hour, we will discuss restrictions."

*Magic cannot produce effects outside of a blade or plate, unless it is to produce those effects in something it is touching. Like the kinetic theft blade.
*Magic can exist in any solid object, but is especially strong in crystalline formations like steel.
*Magic can work in armor, but it is astoundingly time consuming to create, as you must individually Sing the spells into each and every plate.
*Finally, swords are preferred by tradition to the point that none or few have attempted otherwise.

But seeing all the shit happening.....perhaps using a different name would have been advisable.

>>40845138
You know, you could have easily fixed this by saying that all the families made a family SWORD, and it's kind of hard to fold a magic sword into a magic spear, so everyone learns how to make swords.
>>
>>40845138

*Magic cannot produce effects outside of a blade or plate, unless it is to produce those effects in something it is touching. Like the kinetic theft blade.

So nothing that restricts it only to swords since there's more than one bladed and type of weapon.

well the problem with spears is the metal tip is tiny and the shaft could easily be broken by another magical weapon. a sword is a good sized solid chunk of metal. spell power could be restricted by how large a metal you are putting it in. a spear tip is too small to fit the "fuck you mk 5" effect, but a sword can.
>>
>>40845448
Yes, I read it? What's your point?

The First made a sword instead of a staff. Everyone copied him, making swords. These swords were refined/replaced into the Family Swords. At this point, everyone was too invested into the Family Swords to explore other bladed weapons.

"Mmmn... Doable." the smithy states, thoughtful. "Tricky, though. Etching and Singing are different, and you'd have to get them to cooperate. But if you managed, well... A different sword that looked the same for every duel. Hah! Rothschilde would love the shit out of it."

"...Does it have to be a sword or armor?"

"...No, actually." the smithy states. "To be totally honest, it can be any metallic shape. look at Donmagus, you can hardly call those oversized oars swords."

"And spears?"

"...Would be hard as hell to balance if you want a decent enchantment, since the metal bit is too small to carry a charge worth Singing and making the whole mess steel would screw with typical stances. Doable, though."

The smithy strokes his beard. "You should give some thought to your first Single Spell Blade, milady. It's an important step - you might want to wait until after the ball."

A one use sword musket that shoot a sharpened metal stake from the end.

Exploding arrowheads seem very inneficient.
We'd have to enchant them individually.

>>40846343
>>40846364
Why one-use when you can fire successive chunks of blade until you're down to your hilt?
>>
>>40846306
That's why you use it as a sidearm so you can wait for it to regenerate.

>>40846380
Or we could get a dozen apprentice smiths to make five apiece.
>>
You consider, quietly.

A mace that explodes. But not the mace itself... A more... Just a sound explosion, a blast of vibrations, a massive impact?

It'd be hell on anything metal, really. Or a whip-sword, one that used a cord as its core and was able to extend and retract on command... Hm.

>Whip sword.
>Blast mace.
>Something else...?
>>
>>40846399
Or you put regenerative magic in the non-exploding hilt core.

Mark all these ideas down so you can do them after you get the basics down.

Also, invulnerable obsidian dagger.

Maybe drawing its mass back to itself, then resealing?

>Maybe drawing its mass back to itself, then resealing?
sounds....complicated. Giving each piece, no matter how small, the ability to float back would require an infinitely divisible spell.

Then there's the problem of the opponent actively locking the pieces down, or destroying them outright.
>>
>>40846638
Could lock the parts to a "core" piece.
So a sword inside a mace that explodes and then reforms around the sword.
>>
>>40846679
Holy shit.
>Explode
>Hit them with shrapnel
>stab

>>
>>40846679
I ASSUMED a core piece, because it's already pretty damn complicated with, let alone without.

>sword in mace
....I like it. If it makes things easier, leave the mace with clear separations, each piece being slightly bigger than a fist to head size. Much easier to work the spells for a beginner.

Eh, maces and swords are different shapes; you'd need to have one/both in a weird shape.

Maybe a rapier inside a maul.

Urumi a one-handed weapon, so is a mace.
>>
You decide on a whip sword. Construction will be difficult, and so will singing, but it'll be worthwhile, in the end. Something elegant and interesting, something to make your mark.

You change into your sleeping garments after your bath, slipping into bed with thought. Tomorrow morning, things would begin in earnest. You'll forge your first sword, and be able to duel properly! You smile, looking forward to the next day with nervous energy.

>Urumi a one-handed weapon, so is a mace.
Urumi have extremely large swing arcs, and are best wielded with a shield.

Maces have large swing arcs, and I assume you want to build some momentum for your BOOM because it's not cool otherwise. Generally also used with shields.

They use completely different arm motions and are incompatible with each other. Plus, you still need to learn how to rapier/sword properly AFTER the explosion. For a character way behind everyone else in training and time.
>>
>>40846993
That's why nothing in the post indicated they were being used simultaneously, and rather that one was used for long distance engagements and the other for close distance.

Kinda like how romans used to throw their pilum and then use the spata/gladius.

>Maces have large swing arcs, and I assume you want to build some momentum for your BOOM because it's not cool otherwise. Generally also used with shields.
If the explosion comes from enchantment, and I'm guessing you don't want to frag yourself, then it'd be better as a cone-shaped explosion aimed from the tip or something. Kinda like a shotgun-mace.
>>
>>40847048
>mace as a side-arm
>still holding whipsword
I don't think it's going to be quite as easy to switch weapons as it is for pilum/spatha

It's possible to do a nearly-half circle explosion safely.

Couldn't the lateral explosion be only partial then?
Could be useful in case regenerating isn't possible.
>>
>>40847210
I don't see why not, aside from difficulty.

As a proof of concept, we'll want something simple and work our way up, but I don't see how EGO is going to accomplish that in quest form.

Okay, so.

Chronomancy enchantment that takes the person two seconds into the past, coupled with a Blink spell so they're not in the same position.

It would be best suited for something small/close range. Shortsword or Dagger, though singing a spell into something that small might be tricky. The reason being is that

>Charge opponent who has a weapon with much greater reach and strength
>They cut you in half at the waist
>Suddenly, it's two seconds ago,
>before you got cut in half,
>and you're behind your opponent
>Who is focusing on the you that just got cut and half and won't do the thing for another two seconds
>That's two seconds where their attention is off you
>Charge them again while they're off guard
>Get in close
>Reach don't mean shit when you a dagger in they neck
>>
>>40848178
Don't get ahead of yourself, bub. Blink is some pretty OP stuff WITHOUT time-fuckery.
>>
>Time magic
Yeah, I'm out
>>
>>40848178
Instead of all that, just have a warhammer whose head teleports two seconds in the past.

>Guy charges
>You evade, keeping track of where he was
>Swing 1.9 seconds later
>Guy had charged into warhammer head
>???
>Profit!
