You nod and lift Emma to her feet before standing yourself, setting the trident up on your shoulder. "Well, then, let's get going. The sooner I take care of your monster problem, the sooner we can go get my sister back."Vsszah nods quickly, motioning with his hand. Another of his attendants rises and moves to the doorway, beckoning for you to follow. "Go with Ssszhva. They will lead you to the shrine. Be ready. It dark. Cold. Black."You nod at the warning and turn, clumsily moving through the water after the merfolk. They lead you through more of the cave-houses, further along the sandy bottom, past bright jagged reefs of coral and schools of brightly colored fish. In the distance, you see massive schools of tiny aquatic life catching the light of the filtered sun, here and there scattering in every direction from the path of an oncoming predator. Despite the relative silence, you're aware of a pulse, like a beating heart, and you're not sure whether it comes from above or below. The sound is disorienting, even with your bubble of air allowing a modicum of normal hearing. Emma tags along close behind you, somewhat calmer but stil looking skittish. She's conjured several orbs of foxfire to light your way, despite the fact the filtered light from above provides ample illumination. For now. Finally, you come to a sharp shelf, plunging deep into the ocean as is the world itself simply ends past a certain point. The merfolk points down into the murky depths, and you're barely aware of a jagged form jutting up barely into view from the ground far below, the spiral form lined with jagged spines. Your escort says something in the strange sing-song and points to its stomach. You look, noting a long, jagged scar running from its chest down to its thigh. It looks fresh and raw, and you can't help but feel that the tone is somewhat accusatory. The merfolk takes a seat on the edge of the shelf, as if prepared to wait.
>>40840023"Well... we're really doing this, aren't we..." Emma asks quietly. You nod and look down into the depths. The kitsune sends a ball of foxfire down to illuminate the way. The thing is massive and it looks lethal, the long spines each easily twice as tall as you and razor-tipped. There is a great hole at the bottom. A door, maybe. >>40840035The merfolk watches you expectantly, and Emma creeps close to the edge, looking out over it timidly. "It's so deep and dark. I can barely see the bottom..." She closes her eyes, and a few more globes of foxfire flash into being, doing very little against pressing dark. Still, she sends them ahead, and they do some good at lighting the path. The spines and the wall of the cliff you stand upon seem to pose twin threats to your descent, but as the small colored balls of dancing light drift among the spines, you think you see the way you're going to navigate your way down."Emma, follow my lead, all right?""What are you talking ab-" She turns, her eyes widening as you move. You crouch down, carefully plotting out your path, and take a leap out into the open water."Nadia, what are you doing!?"You fly from the cliff face, arms outstretched like a gymnast, and you begin to descend quickly, your tail flowing out behind you like some kind of scarf. As you fall, you bear your claws, the gleam parting the darkness more effectively than Emma's foxfire, and the force of your leap sends you against the edge of the shell, barely missing the spines, and you slam your claws into the hardened material, driving shards from the surface, and stilling your descent. You hang in place, bracing yourself with a foot against one of the curls in the massive shell. You look up above you and oh wow, you fell quite a distance.Emma is shouting something that you can't hear, leaning over the cliff's edge and oh wow, she looks angry. She scowls at you and slowly edges herself over the edge of the cliff, slowly descending as she hunts for hand and footholds. You whine softly, thankful the water dampens the noise. She's going to be shouting at you later...
>>40840823You begin descending the shell, using the spines as handholds, and bracing yourself against its surface and sliding when necessary until you reach the ground, meeting Emma at the massive hole leading to the interior of the shell. The darkness inside is broken here and there by small points of white light, some kind of mineral gleam. The scale of the interior dwarfs the caverns of your home, and the water flowing from within is frigid, the force of it almost enough to drive you back. You're suddenly unsure of what to do. You didn't know what to do with the first shrine, either, and that one didn't even have a monster inhabiting it.>Proceed quickly. Fortune favors the bold.>Move carefully. Ah good, I caught one still in progress. I've missed the past 3
>>40840842No sense in waiting. Whatever happens, this is the only way you can move ahead: through the monster, through the fish-people, through the islanders, through the dragon, and back to your sister. You turn and smile at Emma, who still looks more than a little upset with you, but nods anyway. You dash ahead and she runs to keep up, weaving a quick spell to wrap the shadows around you like a cloak. You think you detect movement in the murky darkness outside the dim light shed by the small mineral growths on the inside of the shell's shining walls, the mud and dirt of the floor sticking and clinging to your paws and fur with tenacity. Something crunches underfoot, and a quick look below reveals something bleached white, picked clean, and snapped in half by your tread. You don't pay it any more mind than you have to, for fear that in another lifetime, you would have recognized a child-sized femur. You soon move out of the muck, following the spiral of the shell upward. The hallway remains consistent, the mineral growths becoming more frequent and casting a greater range of light. You feel Emma's hand tug on yours gently, pulling you against the wall. You are not alone, blind, worm-like creatures clean to the walls, mouths full of suckers and single, blood-colored "eyes" on the back of their heads blinking at you as you move past. They emit a sound somewhere between a hiss and a rattle, trembling so hard they knock their teeth against the inside of the shell. Emma clings to you and you take hold of the trident, reaching out to jab one of them with a tine. The creature squeals like a wild boar , shrivelling as something putrid and black bleeds out into the water, the cloud seeming as if it would obscure your vision. You wait for it to settle to the bottom before moving ahead.
>>40841374Soon enough, you reach the top of the "hallway" and find yourself looking down into a deep pit, black as night. Your claws - and your rune marks - glow brilliant as the sun, and you feel more so than hear the voice of Yra telling you in your heart to go forth, to take his light into the depths, slay this beast, and liberate this place where his kin rests. Emma holds tight to your hand, steadying herself to follow you. Her lips move, and you realize that, in the presence of this pit, you can't hear anything. Even with your fur, even with your inner heat, you feel frigid and hopeless. It is as if in the presence of this depth, all light, all joy, all sound, everything vanishes.>Hug Emma. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfTKM6PwztA>>40841400You turn to the smaller girl and gather her close, holding her to you with both arms, burying your face in her hair and closing your eyes. You love her, and here confronted with this manifestation of fear and darkness before you, you can only hope that she can feel it. You run your golden nails lightly through her hair and along her ears, feel the beating of her heart through your flesh. She hesitates a moment, then clings to you. You feel her rub her nose against you and mouth something, but you haven't the faintest idea what it might be. You don't need to."Yra, please. I need help. This thing sounds nasty, and I don't want Emma to get hurt... so please, help me get rid of it so I can keep her safe and meet Djanna again." You've never prayed before, but it never hurts to offer thanks or ask for help. Family looks out for family, and if you need to humble yourself for that, then so be it. You pull back from Emma and smile down at her. She looks up at you with resolve in her eyes and nods to you. She turns to the hole, whispering a few words. A ball of fire appears - then promptly sizzles into nothingness - in the water, and she scowls. You shake your head and motion that she should stay back. She looks at you like you've grown a third eye and leaps into the hole ahead of you. In shock, you leap in after her.You feel yourself suspended upside down for a moment, all light gone from the world but for the very dim glow of your brands, and... the trident? The shadows move around you, catching the light, reflecting it in deep onyx-colored scales that spiral around you as if you were in the center of a great sphere of undulating rope. You feel fear grip you, almost making your heart seize. You see Djanna, torn limb from limb, and Emma, missing the lower half of her body, drifting lazily in the water around you. Your eyes widen, but... no, no, it's not them. It can't be. Djanna is nowhere near here, and Emma...
>>40842034You swing out slowly with the trident, and it passes through Emma's head, the illusion shimmering, but not dispelling. You feel something brush against your feet and you look down, the shadow-cloaked form of the foxgirl moving below you. You heave a sigh of relief. That's when the inside of the sphere is illuminated by a baleful yellowish glow, a massive serpentine head poking inward as the ball opens up, revealing utter darkness beyond. Its head is long and tapered to a sharp, beaked point, fins cresting its jaws and its milky white eyes catching the yellow light of a large, gemlike patch in its brow. Its eyes take on a sickly pale tint from the light, and it seems to glare at you with nothing but hate, its lack of pupils be damned. It opens its maw, revealing rows of razor-sharp fangs and a long, forked tongue. It hisses, and a jet of freezing water streams past you, leaving trails of jagged ice in its wake.It lets out a roar, long and low, and you feel it vibrating through the water more than hear it. You clench the muscles in your legs and "leap" sideways, launching yourself at the beast. It shifts, darting forward like a snake. Just before its jaws snap closed on you, you grab hold of its beak and jerk yourself up out of its maw's reach, though you lose some of the hair on the tip of your tail to its teeth. It hurts, but you power through the pain. You drag yourself prone atop its maw, hanging on for dear life as it snakes toward the coiled "wall" opposite, but you're undeterred. You drag yourself up toward its eyes, squinting your own against the baleful light shed by the gem in the center of its forehead. You rise to a kneeling position, readying the trident with one hand and holding on with the other. You pull back, ready to drive the tines home. That's when you feel one of the beast's coils slam into your back. The force drags you up and over its head, along it's back and into the open water as the rest of its neck and body snake by you, leaving you momentarily stunned, but otherwise unharmed. You see a second copy of you blink into existence across the spherical arena, hunched over as if wounded. the beast's head emerges from a wall nearby the copy, the length that had followed its head undulating away to rejoin the walls surrounding you. It snarls and unleashes another torrent of its icy breath, seeming to entomb the illusory copy. The beast seems distracted, but it's not anywhere near striking range. The fiend snarls, unleashing a torrent of frigid water and following the path of the spheres, leaving trails of ice in their path. You use the opportunity to move, kicking slowly and moving to the back of its head, just behind its fin. You carefully line yourself up, the light of your trident, claws, and brands gleaming brighter as you approach. The beast quickly turns, and you barely manage to move in time to avoid the spines on its fins, grabbing hold of a bony protrusion from its eye ridge, holding on for dear life as it thrashes, trying to throw you off with a defiant, deep roar. You hold on, your strength of your grip cracking the bone. You grit your teeth, growling as you feel your fur beginning to grow more damp, feeling the first bits of water splashing against your muzzle. No! You have to make this quick, then...You drag yourself up and meet the beast, eye to eye. You split your lungs with a war cry that, despite the press of the water, tears through the darkness like a banshee's scream as you drive the trident into it's eye. As soon as blades penetrate flesh, the metal glows and burns like the heart of the sun. Even your skin sizzles as the thing heats instantly, bubbles rising from its surface as the water around it boils. The beast rears back, shrieking mad as the weapon burrows deeper into its skull. For the briefest of moments, outlined in the bubbles and the light, you see a humanoid image that looks very much like Cain, driving the weapon into the beast until it vanishes entirely into it's eye. It thrashes about madly, jerking and twitching as blood and bile rise from its wound and throat. It vomits, bones and chunks of ice rising into the water before it tries to outrun the pain. As the waterbreathing spell fails, you see the coils drawing in on you rapidly, like a rapidly closing trap. You're dimly aware of pain, then darkness.

How the...Yeah, you grab the monster's cheek... drive in the trident...And then you see Emma at the bottom of the serpentine coils, gripping her throat and flailing, as she struggles to breathe.YOU HAVE RECEIVED THE BLESSINGS OF SHACELERITY: Move with great speed at the cost of health.PERSPECTIVE: Time seems to move more slowly for you, giving you time to better react>Grab Emma and find a way out!>Assist yourself in killing the beast before it can run off!>Other

>>40845080So is Emma contributing enough in your opinion? She's not a combat monster like Nadia, but I don't want her to be window dressing either.
>>40844932YOU ARE CURRENTLY ACTING UNDER: PERSPECTIVE.Give me a die to find a way out between the coils.
>>40845151We are somehow having to introduce time fuckery to save her while "not Nadia" continues fighting whatever the fuck this is. I am confused, would very much like the thing to just be dead.Emma does well enough. Her fire just is ill suited to this environment.

>>40845215The air breathing spell ran out. When the creature flees, its brain on sunfire, it's going to pull in on itself and basically doom you to a watery grave. Sha's domain being time, you're getting a chance to save her and GTFO.
>>40845151She is a bloody illusionist, her combat capability depends entirely on how effective she is at fooling monsters.Either give her more general mage-combat abilities and make into a combat semi-monster, or give her a wider range of effects to choose from if you want to keep her a support -type character.Burger, burgers, burgers everywhere, but not a single sandwich to be seen.
>>40845215Eh a god/spirit/thing is letting us save her by using her time powers. Not sure how that's confusing.Admittedly the spell being this short is a bit dumb for various reasons. You'd think they'd at least have sent someone to renew the spell right before they started the battle.
>>40845281Time traveling just usually goes under "Shit that gives even gods major trouble to turn back and usually causes more problems than it fixes." If it's an easy, perfect thing that this god can just do, great, I guess. Living is pretty nice.

>>40845606They owe us quite a bit I think. We should find out what they were planning to do if they had found us when searching for us that night. I hope we get the opportunity to speak with Sha, or whatever servant tends the shrine here, more though.
>>40844932Oh shit! I forgot to ask!Do we get Sha's mark? And if so, where does it appear?

>>40845927Yes, you get Sha's mark.It appears on the upper arm.>>40848585No sad. I had unexpected company. Swear to god, if it's not one thing it's another.Back and writing. I'm sorry...
>>40848852No, no birds. Sister hit a deer and had to bring her car down to the dealership. Had to play big brother.
>>40844932You descend quickly and wrap your arms around the struggling kitsune. She stiffens, looking back at you as she sucks in a grateful breath, your bubble of air overlapping her and allowing her to breathe. Your spell will not remain active for much longer, however, and you desperately look around you for an opening. The coils of the monstrosity are woven tightly, like some manner of basket, and as soon as an opening seems to appear is closes again, denying you salvation. You growl softly, but wait. Basket... basket...You look upward, and far above, at the top of the undulating mass, you see the opening where you fell in, all but uncovered by the creature's movements. You don't even give it a second thought as you kick off the bottom, launching upward. As you swim for your escape, you - the other you - drive the trident home, the sudden blinding glare piercing the darkness like the sun rising over the deepest, blackest night. You dare not look back to see the aftermath. The creature writhes and roars, and just as you reach the upper reaches of its coils, it rushes again, trying to flee it's grisly fate. You just barely evade the ensnaring collapse of it's bulk, alighting on the precipice from which you descended initially. You look behind you, the darkness from earlier not quite so deep, nor so horrible, as you recall. It's only when you heave a sigh of relief and taste sea water that you realize that the waterbreathing spell is still doomed to failure."TIME IS YOURS, CHILD. ITS FLOW AID YOU." speaks a voice, deep as the sea, into the core of your being. You feel your heart begin to pound, your body excite, and before you realize what's happening, you're moving through the twisting hallway of the shell at a speed you'd never before thought yourself capable of.
>>40849026For each step it seems you take three, and the next thing you seem to know, you're back at the crest of the cliff, and the merman is desperately chanting over you, refreshing the spell with a worried expression.Once assured you are both alive and in no danger of drowning, he leads you back to Vsszah's home, and you are lead before the ruler of the band of merfolk. You're panting and sweating despite the chill of the deeps, your stomach churning, threatening to revisit your lunch. Your muscles ache, and you feel fatigued."It done!? You kill child-swallower!?">Yes, now you can help me!>Yeah... you don't have anything to worry about...>Why didn't you warn me about the spell wearing off!?

>>40849051"Yeah. Yeah, it's done... but why didn't you warn me about the spell wearing off!? We could have died!" You growl, tail thrashing as you glare at Vsszah. He looks confused, and his advisor whispers in his ear. His eyes widen and he bows from his seated position, arms stretched out with palms up. Weird... that looks just like how your cousins bowed to your mother..."Sorry. Did not know. Not bring drylanders down for very long time. Apologize do." His advisers and other attendants all bow down as well. You stiffen your back, but to your credit don't whine. Emma looks uncomfortable at the attention being lavished on the both of you."It's fine... I guess..." you frown softly. "But now, it's your turn to help me. Right? That... that was the deal..." you look intently at the lord of the merfolk, suddenly worried for reasons you can't quite-"Honored. Would be." He rises quickly and croaks loudly. His attendants rise swiftly and dash from the hovel. Vsszah offers you his hand and, hesitating only for a moment, you take it. The merfolk helps you to your feet with a bright smile. "Savior of people. Fight alongside will. Dragon fall. Save drylander sister."You can't suppress your wagging one bit. "But first, there's something I need to do. Can you take me back to the shrine?"===============================
>>40849483You stand in the depths of the shell, a duo of merfolk armed with long coral spears accompanying you. The remains of the serpent lie on the bottom, cold and still, the biolumiescent crystal on its brow still subtly shedding its wretched light. Bones litter the muck, and the merfolk seem deeply unsettled by the place. Still, you feel at ease here. The foxfire illuminates the depths much more easily in the monster's absence, and with the creature fallen to the bottom, you can easily see the flowing, wavelike markings carved into the inner shell. You feel the sacred power of this place, but you don't feel the same sort of pull as you did from the forest shrine.>Try falling asleep. That was how you met Goldy.>Try prayer? >>40849499You look at the symbols carefully, and you realize the pattern. Each wave is unique, but they form into one another as a repeating pattern, the same wave over and over again becoming the great whole of the sea within this shell. You feel the press of the water all around you and you can't help but feel overwhelmed. You sink to your knees in the muck, and Emma comes over to your side."Nadia, what are you doing?" She lays a hand on your shoulder, bending down to look at you in concern. You don't respond as you close your eyes and clasp your hands. You focus your mind's eye on the image of the wave, the singular mark, and then upon how it extends, one wave becoming many, the whole press of the the seas. You remember the sound of the tide along the beach as you walked with Cain, and a name comes to mind."Sha..." You speak the name with a reverence you didn't intend, and the world seems to stop around you, all color fading. You speak the name again, a fervent plea, and the world falls away. You find yourself once more on the empty plane, surrounded by tentacles, the great eye staring down at you from within the great, spined shell."So. I appreciate it.""I simply did a good turn to the one who freed my Master's shrine. Think nothing of it.""But you didn't have to.""It would have been improper if I hadn't. The Great Deep would not have forgiven me." The great eye blinks slowly, regarding you impassively."Is that what you call Sha?" you ask, looking up at the monstrosity and tilting your head."Indeed, though for me to use their name..." The tentacles shiver slightly beneath you.A moment passes in silence before you ask. "What about you... what's your name?""I have many titles. Ocean-swallower, scourge of coasts, fleet-breaker, tide-master. You may call me Kraken."You smile and nod, wagging. "I'm Nadia. It's nice to meet you!""And you." The beast burbles gently."So, I have to ask... why is the shrine clear down here? How are people supposed to visit without getting hurt? And why the giant monster?""The shrine is not meant for visitors, child. It is a place of power, sacred to the people who are its chosen. This is the shrine of the Mer, meant for those who dwell in the sea. You who were chosen by Yra, dragon-friend and destined, are a special case. It is your role to reconnect these sacred places to the world, and remind those above of our power."You tilt your head curiously, but nod. "Then... the monster?"
>>40850489"The Mer had forgotten their duties, and neglected their role. Corruption grew, and it attracted the beast whom you destroyed. With its taint purged, if the Mer return to teir rightful places, the power of this place will return, and it will not again fall subject to such an incursion."You think you understand, but you're not sure how to take all of this. "Then, what can they do to avoid... what you just said? Will the shrine be all right?""Indeed... if they keep it well. They know the ancient rites and rituals. They dwell in their unconscious minds. They have but to enter this place, surrender their ego, and all will be made clear to them." >That doesn't sound good...>I'll let them know.>OtherLast update tonight.

>>40856300On the otherhand he does have a resident troll who dedicates a portion of their time to antagonising him, so there's that going for him.
>>40856756Wouldn't call that a plus.
Drawfags don't mean a lot and overall, the condition of this quest is solid. The descriptive writing is good with few grammatical errors and an impressive pace of production. On the downside, it took a massive tonal shift that cut off a quarter of its audience fairly early on and seems a little rushed from a narrative standpoint at certain key junctures. There doesn't seem to be recovery time in the quest tissue between bouts of tragedy, and every option for the past five threads has had the undertone of "Are you sure you want to trust X to do Y, when it could in Z vague thing you don't understand?" Running at times when no one is available to play is also a questionable decision on Lotus' parts. All that aside, Lotus' isn't too much a shit for the absence of a drawfag. There are a fair number of people here for a reason.
>>40850504> That doesn't sound good...I'm expecting an answer something along the lines of: "Well, if they'll stop being egotistical, fishy assholes and terrorizing the seas, things will be alright."
