You are Sallazar, a young wizard who has recently left the army. You have taken a teaching job at Egwen Girls Convent.

In addition the Headmaster of the school wants you to run the schools adventurers club, to give some of the schools more...unusual...girls something fun to do.

The Adventurers Club http://pastebin.com/t467eb4q
Classes and Races http://pastebin.com/wCst2V8B
Quest Rules http://pastebin.com/RG9EAvPq
Main Character http://pastebin.com/xHFh2iz2
Setting http://pastebin.com/ej98zdgD
Continent Map http://ibin.co/260vHqwvCza9

You remain calm and murmur a few arcane phrases under your breath, even as you flex your fingers through the required gestures. The comforting feeling of your Spell Mantle settling on you boosts your confidence and the feeling of fangs on your neck disappears.

“What the...?” says the voice, sounding unsure as you say calmly “young lady, attacking a student or a teacher is against the rules, please let go.”

There’s a high-pitched “eep!” and the limbs embracing you are quickly withdrawn and you hear something running or scuttling away. When you turn around, there’s no one there.

“I’m not here to hurt you” you say “I’m Professor Sallazar, I just want to talk to you.”

“I didn’t mean to attack you Professor” says a voice from...somewhere in the darkness. You don’t even know where its coming from, it seems to be coming from all around you, but that’s impossible.

“I know” you say, neglecting to mention she was expecting to attack another student and bite her.

“Why are you glowing?” asks the voice. You look down at yourself, you’re not glowing.

“Why do you think I’m glowing?” you ask.

“Because you are” says the voice “all blues and greens and some gold too.”

“Tell me more about the glow” you say softly “where is it coming from?”

“Form all around you” says the voice “mostly your robes though.” Ah, it seems she’s seeing magic, somehow.
>>
“Well I did just cast a spell” you say “maybe you’re seeing that.”

“It’s not much to see by though” says the voice “why’d you do it?”

“Its not to see by” you say “its a protective spell, you might be seeing the arcane energies of the spell, not a real light.”

There’s a pause then “what?” comes the reply.

“It sounds as if you’re seeing magic” you say “not an uncommon power for some Soulborn.”

“Oh” says the voice “Well, uh, what do you want Professor?”

“I wanted to talk to you?” you say again “Calluna isn’t it?” Fangs and tentacles match the description of this girl.

“I’m not breaking any rules” says the voice. You still can’t see her or pinpoint her location from the sound she’s making.

What do you do?
>Talk to her, ask her why she’s up here
>Talk about the adventurers club
>Tell her to reveal herself, or lose credits – she did just attack you
>Create some light with a cantrip
>Cast another spell (what?)
>Other (what?)

Critical: Calluna learned Detect Magic spell ability

Soulborn are as nice and friendly as people.

>>
>>40859634
This conversation is fucking stupid and so are you. Even if it was attempted murder, which it's not, there are mitigating circumstances like the fact that the offender is a minor, we're responsible for her safety as a school official, she thought we were someone else who it sounds like threatened her, and perhaps most importantly, we want something from her. And on a meta level, this isn't that kind of game. It's a fucking monstergirl highschool game.

Even if we were to forget all of that and treat the situation with all the gravity of a serial killing slasher, we would at worst attack her and be accused of murder ourselves, or at best no real action is taken and we just burn the bridge with her and get a bad rep at the school.

In conclusion: stop being retarded.
>>

>>40859781
Undeniably true that it's stupid and wrong.
>>
“Apart from attacking me” you say in a calm voice “now either show yourself, or I’ll start taking credits away.”

To the left of you, almost within arms reach, a girl appears clinging to the wall, at head height for you. How in the Hells did she do that?

“Am I in trouble?” she asks miserably, hugging herself with her arms.

The girl, probably Calluna, has light brown skin and brown hair and eyes. She has prominent fangs, visible when she speaks. She has four long black tentacles that are currently clinging to the stone wall she’s sat on.

“What would you have done if it wasn’t me?” you ask “if you had grabbed Filia instead?”

Calluna shrugs “I dunno” she says “I just wanted to scare her, bite her and make her go away, make her stop making fun of me.”

“Does she tease you a lot?” you ask.

Calluna shrugs “some” she says “Filia is succubus-soulborn, she’s pretty and popular and fits in. I...don’t fit in, anywhere.”

“Surely there must be some place you feel like fitting in, perhaps-”

The girl cuts you off “No!” she almost yells “you adults always say that and its not true, nothing makes sense, nothing is right, you talk and talk and never understand!”

You take a moment before responding “How is everything wrong?” you ask.

“What?” says Calluna

“You said everything is wrong” you say “so how is it wrong? How *should* it be?”

Now its Callunas turn to pause, then she says “no one ever asked that before”

You say nothing, and just wait. She starts talking.

“The sky is the wrong colour, the birds all have too few wings, I can’t hear the song in my head that I know should be there, the trees don’t talk to me anymore and I’m alone. All the animals just feel wrong, even this wall” she thumps it “it’s just, the angles are wrong, it exists in a funny shape.”
>>
Calluna continues “We went to the circus a while ago and there were these funny glasses all broken up and when the others put them on they said the view was all messed up, but when I put them on, to me it was the same. To me its like I’m *always* wearing the smashed glasses, like the whole world is messed up. I’m not crazy” she finishes defiantly, like she’s heard that accusation before.

How do you respond?

“Tell me more” you say, leaning against the wall next to her “tell me everything that’s wrong with the world.”

Calluna gives you a hesitant look, and keeps talking. You try to process what she says, trying to fit it into your knowledge of magic and extraplanar creatures as much as you can. You’ve been reading as much as you can about Soulborn in your spare time, devouring the books the Headmaster has given you.

You ask questions, and even perform a few simple cantrips to see how she perceives colour and sound.

There’s nothing wrong with her senses that you can detect, or even how she processes it – she can tell colours apart and easily identify different sounds, but everything seems foreign to her. She prefers the dark nights because she can see and hear so much less, and so there’s less to trouble her.

Eventually you have it figured out, or at least, you think you do.

“Has anyone ever told you what sort of Soulborn you are?” you ask.

Calluna shakes her head “They thought I was some sort of demon Soulborn” she says “but holy stuff doesn’t do anything to me, and sunlight doesn’t hurt, so I’m probably not a vampire.”

“I don’t know exactly what sort of Soulborn you are” you say “but during the Last War some summoners reached pretty far. There are planes inhabited by creatures so unusual, so alien that they are just called *The Far Realms*. I think whatever creature was bound into your parent came from there.”

“But I have memories” protests Calluna “memories from when I was young, the world made sense then and I had sisters, lots of them, and the trees sang to me.”

“Many demon Soulborn have memories and dreams of Hell” you say quietly “somehow they inherit the memories of the demon that was bound into their parent.”

“Oh” says Calluna, sounding very lost “so if I went to one of these Far Realms, would it be home?”

“I don’t know for sure” you say “but I don’t think so.”

“Why?” she asks
>>
“Fire elemental Soulborn” you say “are very resistant to fire and they feel cold here all the time, but they can’t live on the Plane of Fire – at least, not for more than a few hours. They’re from two worlds, but don’t feel truly at home in either. I think if you went to a Far Plane, you’d last longer than most, but eventually it would hurt you.”

Calluna is quiet for a long time and then says in a small voice, sounding like she’s choking back tears “So I really don’t belong anywhere then...”

Ah Hells, you were just trying to figure out the truth, not make her feel worse, good going Sallazar, you mentally kick yourself.

Now how will you fix this?

Assuming she gets sent back to her true home instead of one of the far planes. We might not be in the same reality, and that would be the nearest approximation. This is the plane she was born in

Soul-bound parents produce soul-born children

Soul-born kids inherit traits, memories and other stuff from the entity causing issues

>No he isn't, he just told her that soul-born may inherit memories from the entity that was soul-bound to her parents
Anon. With "he" was talking about the guy you replied to.

Our MC bases his assumptiom on assuming she is a soulborn.
He is not infallible and his assumptiom on that matter can be wrong, likely is wrong.

The character is a reference to PRQ, because at the end of the last PoJ thread, when we discussed potential students, people asked for a Abberation girl, and got to the conclusion that a child of the PRQ protagonist would fit the bill very well.
Hence Calluna is that.

Calluna lifts up her head and you see tear-filled eyes “what?” she sobs

“At least then you’ll know” you say gently “You’ll know what you are, and then you can decide who you want to be.”

Calluna launches herself off the wall at you, but its not an attack. Her arms, and rather creepily, her tentacles wrap around you and hug you tightly as she buries her face in your shoulder, sobbing.

You hug her back and pat her on the back, trying to sound soothing as you say “There, there, it’s going to be ok.”

Later, when Calluna has recovered her composure, and is drying her eyes, you say “Calluna, I can’t really fix this, or make it go away, but maybe we can take your mind off it.”

Calluna gives you a slightly suspicious look, you replay what you just said in your head, add that to the fact that the two of you are still embracing and- “and by that I mean joining the adventurers club” you say quickly, extricating yourself from the hug “it will be hard work, but rewarding I think, and you’ll be working with other girls who will also be getting thrown into completely unfamiliar situations and having to learn how to cope.”

Yeah, and combat is a wonderful way to deal with pain, a nasty little voice in your mind says. In the heat of battle you can do just about anything and keep functioning...

You ignore the voice and instead say to Calluna “What do you say, want to join a club that involves a lot of screaming, running for your life and confusing, utterly bizarre situations?”

Calluna snorts and then laughs “Well when you put it like that” she says “it kinda sounds fun, I’m in.”

It’s now very late, and after making sure Calluna gets back to her dorm safely, you head to bed yourself, your mind flipping through all the different things you know about Far Realm entities, and how a part-human one might exist in this world without going insane.

With just you to train them, the girls will no doubt make excellent wizards...and that’s about it. You need a variety of skills in your club, and right now you don’t have any way of ensuring that, so you climb the long winding stairs to the Headmasters office to discuss this.

You find him at his desk, muttering to himself as he signs papers, with the door open.

“Sir Sarum” you say, knocking on the door “is this a good time?”

“Sallazar my boy” he says with a smile “Come in, yes, just reviewing the first list of credit reports for our students, which are boring and are going as expected, how can I help you?”

“I’ve recruited seven of the girls so far” you say “and the Daves will be here in a couple of days to build the dungeon, but all I can teach them is magic, I need some other trainers – can any of the faculty help out?”

Headmaster Sarum looks thoughtful.

“Sister Mary could probably help any of the girls wanting to get closer to Yselm and develop priestly powers, but she’s a harsh teacher.”

You vaguely remember an elderly human woman with a permanent scowl “She teaches Religious Studies?”

“That’s right” says the Headmaster “but refuses to mingle much with the other staff.”

“Alright, I suppose she’s a possibility.” You say “Any others?”

“There’s a druid and at least two rangers in the area around Brand according to the locals” says the Headmaster “but if you want something closer to home then Groundskeeper Answick was a soldier, and a few other things besides, he can probably teach the girls how to fight...and steal. Anyone else and you’ll probably need to take the Lightning Rail to the city to recruit someone specifically, although....”

“Although what?” you ask

The Headmaster taps his lips with a finger “I might know where you can find a master of unarmed fighting, though he’s a stubborn old drunk, he’s still the best, and he and I are long overdue a talk too.”

“Alright where can I find him?” you ask
>>
>>40861831
She remembers some of these creatures
It should be enough
Also we know Mind blank
>>
“Mastersgate” says Sir Sarum “about an hours Rail ride away, if you hurry you might just be able to get there and back, or you could go talk to someone else and speak to Hanslow Smith another time.”

You’re about to leave to go and talk to the Groundskeeper, on the basis that he’s closer, but that name makes you do a double-take.

“Hanslow Smith, the All-Style Champion” you say “I thought he died.” You remember standing in the crowd, a mere boy of 9, as Hanslow Smith defended his championship belt for the fifth year running. You wanted to be a hand-fighter when you grew up once, every kid who saw his matches did.

Headmaster Sarum shakes his head “The truth” he says “is much more tragic, but Hanslow still knows how to fight, and whether he knows it or not, he owes me a favour.”

It’d be a long journey but still, Hanslow Smith...

The idea of going to see Hanslow Smith is tempting, but right now you need to think of what’s best for the Club. Groundskeeper Answick is close by and offers a wider variety of skills for the girls to learn.

You say your goodbyes to the Headmaster and head out, looking for Answick. You follow the directions from the other groundskeepers and find him at the back of the school estate, standing outside a small hurt partially hidden by the forest.

He’s sat on a tree stump, firing crossbow bolts at a target...200 yards away, and hitting the bullseye every time.

“Ah, young Master Sallazar” he says as you approach “what can I be doin’ fer ya?”

“I want to ask you about your military career” you say “I was hoping you could train the girls in the adventurers club in fighting skills, and according to the Headmaster, other skills as well.”

“Aye” says Answick “I can train t’gels, but no questions ‘bout me military past lad, deal?”

“Deal” you say. You’ve no need to know about his past, and the girls will probably sweet talk it out of him anyway.

“Alright” says Answick “lemme know when yer need me.”

[Groundkeeper Answick added to club paste]

“O’course” says the Groundskeeper casually “Would be best if’n yer had some proper facilities, I can get some built, but the Headmaster will need ter provide the coin.” He grins that gap-toothed grin.

“The Daves are coming to build a dungeon” you counter “I’m sure they can build some better training facilities too.”

Groundskeeper Answick scowls “as you say young master, as you say. Now, I’m a very busy man, was there anything else?”

“Nothing right now sergeant” you say politely, and leave him be.

You head down into the town of Brand and talk to the locals and get directions to where the druid and the rangers patrol the forest.

You know finding them when they don’t want to be found would be difficult, but if you head into their territory and announce yourself without being rude about it, they’ll probably respond.

Sure enough, after a half-hours walk into the forest a stern-looking elven woman steps out from behind a tree, a longbow held casually in her hand. She has a lithe athletic build and is wearing leather armour.

You hear a waffling noise behind you and...Grace of Yselm that’s one big bear!

The bear is on all fours but its shoulder is a higher than your head.

“What’s your business here?” asks the elven woman, getting right to the point.

“I am Sallazar” you say politely, trying not to show the disdain for elves you picked up during your seven years living with dwarves “I am a teacher at Egwen Girls Convent and I have been asked to run the schools adventuring club and I am in need of people to teach my students some of the skills needed to-”

“No” she says abruptly

“I haven’t even asked yet” you complain, bloody poncy elves!

“So you were going to ask” she says with a smug half-smile “the answers still no.”

“I was going to ask” you forge onwards “If you *or* the other ranger or druid might be interested in teaching, we can pay you.”

She shakes her head “no” she says “though I can only speak for myself.”

“And the others?” you ask.

She gives a one-shoulder shrug “go ask them.”

“What, they won’t talk to you?” you ask, a little more snarkily than maybe you should.

“I’m not your messenger girl” she says, looking down at you. Dammit at times like this you hate being short.

She gives you a long look down, and further down “well, you’ve grasped the obvious” she says “congratulations. As it happens, one of the farmers *is* clearing a lot of the forest. A Mr Aldersly owns a number of smaller farm tenements, and has his...tenants working to clear more land, expanding far beyond the boundary agreed upon by the mayor. If you can have his work halted, I’ll agree to try and undo some of the damage your school does to young minds.”

You grind your teeth a little and try not to think about how easy it would be to turn this entire area into a smoking crater “Thank you” you say “I’ll take that under advisement.”

She smirks at you “was there anything else?”

“Might I have the pleasure of your name” you say, biting off each word “so that I know who I’m negotiating on behalf of?”

“Elven names are difficult for the less- for humans” She says “the locals know me as Taynathil.”

Biting down on the words trying to force their way out, you turn and walk away without saying another word. You have important work to do that’s to help your students, you’ll endure any indignity for them. You keep reminding yourself of this as you walk past the bear, who gives you a good sniffing from head to toes.
---
Back in Brand you search out the mayor. You find him adjudicating some sort of dispute between two of the local men, who are settling their dispute by...wrestling each other wearing breeches and nothing else.

Well, you heard stories about the weird things rural folk get up to. They’re doing this on the wide strip of common land in the middle of the village, whilst a crowd looks on.

Once masculinity has been proved, honour satisfied, and one man’s breeches removed, you approach the Mayor, a Mr Scoper, about the forest clearances.

“Oh well, yes that” says the Mayor, a tall man with a long white moustache “the original boundary was agreed twenty years ago and times change m’lad, times change. Back then we had no need of such land, no need, and now we do.”

“Still” you say “you made some sort of agreement didn’t you?”

“Oh yes” he says, nodding “druid circle all came to tea and everything, signed it myself.”

“Then why aren’t you sticking to it?” you ask as politely as you can, as the crowd disperses.

Mayor Scoper holds up his hands helplessly “I’m not the one logging” he says “Aldersly is, you should talk to him.”

You resist the urge to yell at him to do his damn job.

“You’re the mayor, you signed the agreement” you say “are you going to stand by your word, or are you just a waste of-”

“Young man” says Mayor Scoper, looming over you and wagging a finger at you “we must be ready to deal with real hardships out here in Brand, not legal pettifoggery. Mr Aldersly needs the land so young families can have a place to live and a solid dependable job. Yes, I signed the agreement, but that was twenty years ago, times change, good day!”

And then he turns his back on you and strides away.

It really wouldn’t take much to burn this whole town to the ground, not much arcane power at all.

You stamp off to Mr Alderslys farmstead, ready to commit murder.
---
The farmhands direct you to the main farm house and one of the maids shows you in to the study of a very beefy, once muscular man turning to fat, his greying hair framing a large, sweating face.

“Ah, the new teacher from the school!” he booms cheerfully “Come in lad, get thaself sat down, fancy a brew? Betty, Betty!” he bellows out the door after shaking your hand in a grip like a vice “coupla brews love!”

To you he says “Now young fellamelad, what’s mithing yer?”

You think he just asked why you’re here.

“Its about this logging” you say, laying out your woes “and I need someone who can teach my girls certain skills.” You explain your dilemma to him

“Ah a fair muck” concedes Mr Aldersly “Now my own troubles lad: I got a dozen an’ more families wanting a slice of my land and houses built. I can see thy troubles far enough, and I’m a fair man, so let me lay it out plain for you.”

You brace yourself for being sent on another errand.

“I can built the houses and give land closer to town” says Mr Aldersly “though property taxes within town limits are a cruelty. If the school can share in some of the costs, say 600 gold a year, for say twenty years, then I shall stop logging today fer thee lad, for I likes the grit I sees in yer.”
>>
“I feel there’s another option” you say.

Mr Aldersly gives you a grin “And a bright lad too” he says “Now I have on me staff a young fella called Jonsy, now Jonsy were a ranger tis true, but he fell out with the druids over some such, and he works for me as a trapper and hunter. I’ll admit an’ he won’t lie, his skills might not be as sharp as a nelf that ‘as been doing it for a hundred years, but he’s no slouch. Now, my proposal is this: I can hire Jonsy to the school for a pittance, but the school agrees to keep out of my business ‘bout the logging. Or, if the school is willing to pay the costs, I’ll settle folk closer to town, sound fair?”

“I’ll need to talk to the Headmaster” you say “I can’t make a decision like that on my own.”

“Very true lad, very true” says Mr Aldersly, as a pair of hot teas are brought in by a maid “but which were yer thinking of recommending to him, being the man on the ground and such?”

Your response?

Why do you guys make such a point that our club members be taught by some bitchy elf?
>>
>>40864956
>I think the school can afford 600 gold/year

>>40865066
Because we want them to be trained by someone actually good at it? And not some half-baked loser?
>>
Why the hell are you guys voting on being little bitch to some peasants?
What next, bending over for juicy elf cock?
>>
>>40865093
Support the options that tell him off then, there are several of them.

We should have casted it on mayor
>>

Yeah, I sure want to be executed for casting mind-magic on people.
Its not like they don't have laws and shit in this land.
You edgetards get more retarded every time.
>>
>>40865113
Yeah, that's the problem, there are plenty of them, and there is only one option for being a little bitch and doing everything everyone is asking.

> Talk to the Headmaster about the situation
>>
>>40865178
>and there is only one option for being a little bitch and doing everything everyone is asking
Not really, there are two options for being a little bitch.
Hiring his dude is being even more of a little bitch than paying the money would be.
That way we would at least actually get something out of this.
>>
going with *I need to speak to the headmaster first*

None of these girls are sheltered.
Most of them have been through some shit.
>>
>>40865227
>They are breaking agreement with fucking elves
No, with druids. And that this is a illegal action by them is something we can use to actually get the law on our side.
If we geas him, he gets free because he is the victim and we get executed.

And now stoop wasting post count with your insecure power fantasies, thank you.

>>40865227

My tablet slows down the more posts we have. It still matters to me.

“I can’t make those sorts of decisions for the school” you say, sipping your scalding hot sweet tea “I’ll need to talk to the Headmaster, lay out the options and let him decide.” You neglect to mention that you intend to see if the Headmaster can offer any alternative solutions, ones that don’t involve you getting metaphorically screwed.

“Right enough lad, right enough” says Mr Aldersly “I can see sense in that, why, just the other day...”

You spend the next twenty minutes listening to Mr Aldersly telling you anecdotes about how he looks after the families on his land. Though judging by how rich his hose is, and the sorry state of some of the shacks you saw as you approached, he makes sure he profits, no matter how much he *helps* them.

Eventually you are freed from your social obligations and you trudge your way back up to the school, and the afternoon lessons.

---

And that’s it for today, thanks for playing and I hope you all had fun.

Next thread is in 12 hours, roughly.

For your actions today you gain 6XP, and the club XP pool gains 30XP
>>
inb4 the school says they're gonna deduct the 600 gold a year from our salary or club funds.

They must be really low on people if they have people under 20 as mayors
>>40865329
Would we get into much of trouble for casting Geas telling them to do their fucking job?

We need to have him remind us how civilians handle laws and contracts.

>Would we get into much of trouble for casting Geas telling them to do their fucking job?

If you were caught, yes. Still a form of compulsion, even if you're telling them to follow the law.

Not the mayor, the new families who don't have places to settle.
>>
Pally, is this deal something that could be taken to court and if so in what way would that likely play out?
Would there be an order to stop building new homes? what type of court would hear the case? What is the druid land (public property, private property, an embassy, a sovereign state)
>>
Great thread pally, thanks for running!
