Shoukaku returns shortly with the blanket, only to have you shake your head and point at Naka. She pokes Naka a few times, but the girl refuses to unfold, so Shoukaku simply flicks it into the air and drapes it right over her whole body, head included, with feminine flair. By the time she's returned with another blanket for Arizona, Naka's rolled onto her side and fallen asleep again, knees still hugged to her chest. Shoukaku helps you try to pry Arizona off and give her one side of the bed, but she just gimps up her face in her sleep and ratchets her arms a few notches tighter around your chest. At last Shoukaku just lays the blanket over her and gently slips off her shoes.

“Can I get you anything?” Shoukaku asks as you tuck the blanket snugly around Arizona's neck.

“Nah,” you reply with a yawn. “God, I can barely keep my eyes open.”

“Anesthesia is till wearing off,” she points out. “I'll see you tomorrow, admiral.” She closes the door behind her gently, and you finally let yourself drift off to sleep.
>>
The next morning you wake up bright and early at 0723 hours by sheer force of habit. Your right leg is tingling and numb because of Arizona's kneecap pressing down in the wrong spot, which does nothing to dampen the familiar morning agony in your upper right thigh. You need the head, your head wound is itching like mad and Arizona's drooling on your chest, still fast asleep and not inclined to move.

In short, things are almost back to the warm, familiar embrace of SNAFU. You snag your cell phone off the side table and dial up Goto's cellular. It rings several times, which lets you know instantly that something's off - you can't recall Goto ever taking longer than three rings to answer.

At last the line picks up. “Ah, hello?” It's a sweet, feminine voice you don't recognize.

“BREAKFAST IN BED TEITOKU~”

That one, on the other hand, you *do.*

“I take it Admiral Goto is unavailable,” you reply flatly.

“He's... out,” the voice replies. From the background you hear scraping and thumping sounds, and Kongou's bright voice promising Goto that 'love is going to find him.'

“... out, huh?”

“The window,” the new voice confirms under her breath. “Can I take a message?”

“You're his secretary, right?”

“Yes, sir!” she replies cheerfully. “You can count on me!”

“In that case, could you come to the base infirmary, room 22A? I need some help from somebody that won't spread rumors.”

“Ah, I'm sorry, Admiral Goto is going to need my help cleaning up after Kongou-”

You know exactly why she's dissembling, but you really do need discreet help. Preferably with a crowbar.

Depends entirely on what kind of internal bracing they use and whether they're smart enough to use as many single-piece parts as possible on the interior.

If the weight is correctly distributed, it'll be fine. Lego Bricks can take a *lot* of weight.

“Oh god,” you moan - you're already desperate to choke down your first stiff painkiller of the day and you're not even out of bed yet. And after that dream that miserable damned nightmare rising from the murky memories to swallow you again you want to get back to Your Duty so bad it almost hurts more than your leg.

Almost.
“No, you do not need to help Goto,” you groan. “Nobody can help Goto. She's got his scent.”

“Ah, I'm sorry, I have to go,” the voice replies, “Admiral Goto is running for it and I need to keep-”

“EXCEPT YOU CAN'T,” you snap, not yelling so much as Speaking In Capital Letters, a skill unique to caffeine-deprived skippers worldwide. “BECAUSE KONGOU MAKES THIRTY KNOTS AND YOU MAKE TWENTY-SEVEN.”

“Bu-b-bu-t I'm not even a sh-”

“Yes, you are.”

“I have no idea what you're talking about,” she replies primly, regaining her composure.

“Oh my god I do NOT have time for this cloak-and-wazikashi bullshit,” you groan. “It's been seventy blooming years! We know who you are. We ALL know who you are.”

“Y-you have n-”

A kind of quiet choking sound is coming from the other end of the line which evokes images of fish gasping for air out of water.

“H-h-how-”

“It is a cipher,” you say mysteriously, “wrapped in an Enigma. Now get over here quick because I need somebody who knows how to keep NEW secrets and you're probably the only breathing soul on a naval base who understands the value of said discretion because Reasons!”

“O-okay?” she says, unsettled, and hangs up.

You spend the intervening time trying to reach Naka's chair with your cane to poke her awake. When you finally make contact she just mewls like a cat and rolls away from you, wrapping the big blanket around her an extra layer deep, so she looks like a cocoon-girl. Like a miniature Yamato-class in a graving dock, who will emerge as a poorly-designed carrier come Fall. Just as you're searching for a good lightweight projectile, Yamato herself arrives. Or rather, a tall, oddly-lumpy trench-coat arrives, complete with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. Completing the display is the pretty peach-colored parasol she's cradling gingerly in the crook of one arm, hovering over the whole ensemble like a neon sign begging for attention.

You and the Trenchcoat lock gazes for a long, awkward moment.

“Precautions,” she says, and closes the door, then locks it. “Who's in the blanket?”

“Naka.”

“She... I think she knows, but-”

“Just wrap my belt around her and slide her in the closet.”

“I'll take my chances,” Yamato replies, fumbling with the buttons on the trenchcoat, and finally manages to pull it off. You take a moment to appreciate the bulbousness of her bow as she wrestles with the floppy hat, which has become entangled in the jutting “wings” of her fire-control directors. Her long locks have been pulled back in a ponytail that accentuates every movement of her head; waist-length hair swishing about animatedly as she moves. Finally tugging the hat free, she thinks to remove the dark sunglasses, which are doing her no favors in a room with dark lights and closed blinds. When she finally gets a good look at you - and Arizona - she starts blushing pink, her hands pressing the floppy hat against her mouth.

“Um...”

“Admiral Ryan Settle, United States Navy,” you offer, extending your hand. “Glad to meet you. Wish I was more composed, but, uh, I kind of almost died yesterday.”

Yamato leans forward to gingerly take your hand and shake it, one hand still hiding her face behind the hat. “Ahnoooo...” she says.

“I don't know what that means,” you reply. “Maybe if you used English?”

“Why... do you have a girl... sleeping on your b-”

“Why does Goto have a glorified battle-cruiser trying to cross his T?”

“Because- uh- *oh.*”

“Something like that, yeah. Could you pry her loose? She doesn't want to let go.”

Yamato creeps closer with small, chary steps till she can slip both arms underneath Arizona's elbows. With firm, steady pressure she manages to break her death-grip on your middle and gently lay her to one side of the bed, allowing you to roll out the other. You're just creeping around the end of the bed when Arizona starts groping blindly for her lost pillow. Much like an Exocet, having missed the original mark she begins a pattern search for the next valid target return, IFF be damned.

You're alerted to the crisis when Yamato squeaks in alarm. Pausing halfway through pulling your pants on, you glance over to find Yamato's arm firmly in Arizona's grip.

“Uhh,” she stammers. “Help?”

“Uh,” you say intelligently as you contemplate your options. “Have you ever seen Indiana Jones?”

“W-who?” Yamato says. “I haaaAAAAAEEEEELLLLPPPPP-” she starts stammering as Arizona begins to reel her in, locking elbow behind elbow to pull the bigger girl down into the bed.

“I'm coming!” you reply, advancing on Naka, who's still wrapped up snugly and as dead to the world as she can manage. You slip your arms under her and lift the compact little package - easy enough to do, she can't weigh ninety pounds soaking wet - and cart her over to the bed.

“On three,” you say.

“On three, what!?” Yamato exclaims.

“One.”

“Wait, g-go on th-three or three and THEN go!?”

“Two.”

“C-c-can't you brief me properly fi-”

“THREE!” you exclaim, balancing Naka in the crook of one arm long enough to pinch Yamato's well-shaped rear. She emits a pitch somewhere north of a jammed steam whistle, leaping backwards so violently that she describes a short ballistic arc. So swiftly does she de-ass the area that Arizona's arms are still hovering in air where her captive used to be, allowing you to sling Naka into her waiting embrace without hesitation. Arizona engulfs the new victim without hesitation. Naka murmurs sleepily, then goes silent.

You take a moment to pull the covers over them both again - they're both dead to the world on account of staying up to watch you.

“Y-y-y-y-yyyyyyyyaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh-”

You turn to find Yamato with her back pressed against a closet, her face a shade or two pinker than her little parasol.

You sigh. It's 0745, and this is your new normal.

"You fucking WHAT?" Jintsuu asks, incredulous.

"I asked Harder on a date," you reply again, trying not to laugh at her confusion.

"I--you--why? Are you well, Naka? You've been acting so strange lately. Are you sick?"

"I'm fine! I'm fine, really," you insist, even as she puts a hand to your forehead. "We're not even sure we can get sick. ...Where'd you pick that up, anyway?"

"I've, um, been watching a lot of daytime TV," she mumbles.

Hah! "Your concern's appreciated--really, it is--but I'm not suddenly swooning for... for..." Damn it, why can't you have Wainwright's skill at coming up with these?

"For a half-size half-price sandy manlet?" Jintsuu offers.

You stare at her for a moment before you lose your shit. "And--and you think I'm acting strange?" you wheeze through the laughs.

She grins. "I could go on. Jumped up Yankee bottomfeeder who can't decide what torpedo to do his thinking with."

"No, no, that's... kind of the point, honestly," you explain. "He's not gonna stop bothering our girls until he can see them as ... well, girls, and not 'ours.' You follow me?"

"Not really, no," she replies skeptically.

"He's still adjusting to being alive again. You remember, you sort of follow your old role, it feels comfortable. Natural. And his role was starting trouble."

"For Japanese ships," Jintsuu glowers.

"...And punish him mercilessly if he keeps it up." Jintsuu grins wickedly.

"Bingo. Though really, I'm hoping it doesn't come to that."

She nods. "Okay. Just... be careful. Things are crazy enough. And if he hurts you, I'm going to turn him inside out."

You believe it. "I will, Jintsuu. I promise."

"Thank you. ... How's your side?"

"Today's lesson--welcome to the nineties and aughts, Naka." Wainwright tosses you another handful of CDs. "Had these mailed out to me for you. You're welcome, by the way."

You take the bundle and strip the rubber band away. "Hey, you can't just drop a 'you're welcome' before I even get a chance to say thanks."

"Hey Naka?"

"Yeah?"

"You're welcome."

You snicker and give him the finger. "There's your thanks, Wainwright."

"This music's a bad influence on the youth today," he replies with a laugh.

"I'm pushing a hundred years old, champ, you don't need to tell me. What's this?"

"This... is The Offspring. You're gonna love them."

"You sound pretty sure."

Wainwright just grins. "Because if you don't, I'm going to choke you to death with your own stupid hair."

"Ooh, that sounds promising."

"Just try not to stay up all night listening. You're supposed to be getting better," he chides.

"Spoken like someone who's never had trouble getting to sleep," you grumble, waving him away.

"I was lying awake listening to gunfire before I was in elementary school, honey," he shoots right back. "If you want I can try to prescribe you something."

"Better not," you reply. "I'll live either way. But if there's another raid or something..."

"You shouldn't be fighting anyway."

"I know, I know. But what if Willie's in here looking for orders?" Sweet, clumsy girl that she is, she's been trying to head off 'disappointing' you by visiting more and giving you progress reports on her shooting--apparently she gunned down Tenryuu and her division with training paint? She almost exploded when she told you, so you didn't really have a chance to ask for details. Oh well, Settle can tell you what's up.

Wainwright shakes his head, Serious Voice on. "Just remember to worry about yourself once in a while. I'm getting tired of doing it for you."

As usual, Wainwright's trade for his music was another piece of background history. Today, it was your "birth."

Things begin as they mean to carry on, you told him.

Point the first: You woke up screaming.

Point the second: You remembered everything. Even your own death. Especially your own death.

Point the third: They had been trying to summon a battleship. They got you instead.

You were an early one, as it turned out--maybe ten or twelve girls came back before you. And then there was Goto.

He had none of the disappointment your shinto callers tried (and failed) to hide. He was the hardest person you've ever had to get a read on--some of the Americans might have competed, but by now you've had plenty of time to study people. With Goto, what you found was different from the others--just like them, he had no understanding. But unlike them, he had a respect. And he tried. New to the job, new to Admiralty, and new to spirits of long-dead rusting wrecks, returned to defend humanity against demons of the sea. He did his best, and you always appreciated it.

Those were the days when he had time for all of you. That didn't last. You tried to do your best to help him--the long nights of learning coordination with your new body, studying your future (the past, between when you sunk and today), and honing your unusual skills at reading people.

Maybe, just maybe, you'd be able to help where no one else really could--act as a middle-ground between humans and your kind. That was the aim, anyway. That was why you volunteered yourself to the government, to try to be their liaison. What you became was a media darling and a pretty face. It helped put their fear at ease, you can at least say that much.

You still fucking hate every second of it.
>>
-----

Wain's on your case about not sleeping, but hey, tonight you have an excuse.

Stacked on your bedstand, your mattress, and on either knee are piles of documents and paperwork for your two new duties--heading up a small destroyer task force, and your provisional appointment as Settle's secretary. Bastard really got you--you were sure it was going to be Shoukaku.

Headphones on, tapping the pen against your cheek, you turn over the papers. The only two girls confirmed for your little excursion are Fubuki and Willie. You've got a small pile of candidates to pick a handful of--no upper limit, but you can't imagine greenlighting more than two or three more, tops. Hatsuyuki and Ayanami are pretty obvious picks--putting aside the group got thrown together from you 'working well together' during the raid, they'll help keep each other grounded and they already know one another. From there, it's the usual registration--surprisingly familiar, remembering how you headed a desron (briefly). The rest is all expectations of duties and arranging the logistics.

One more box of shutter shades it is. Have fun with that one, JMSDF.

Which brings you to Admiral Settle. Given that there's not exactly a lot of protocol, your marching orders and advisory information were written to you, personally, by Admiral Goto's own secretary. "Above anything else, the duty you can fulfill that a regular person cannot is to protect your charge from harm," she wrote. And underlined.

You banish the uneasy feeling in your stomach by ratcheting up the volume of your music another couple octaves.

The rest is mostly just a brief outline of your more mundane duties, some tips, and the like. Your email, on the other hand, is now filled with all kinds of big notices, all in English, from a bunch of all-caps acronyms, formally charging you with your duties and the typical canned responses.

...And, you find, you've been given a separate inbox, looping you into any of Settle's correspondence relevant to your secretarial duties. "Light.Cruiser.Naka@mail.mil." All you need is a burger and a gun and you're ready for the big pictures.

And speaking of American dinners, you need to figure out where you can take Harder that won't end in tears or phone cam footage uploaded onto Youtube.

...Life made a lot more sense when it was just Yankees blowing you up.

Parker glared hate at the table in front of him. On it, in neat little stacks of manilla folders and CD cases labeled TOP SECRET – NORORN FOUO, were everything the US Navy and the JMSDF had on Abyssal sightings. Still photos. Satellite imagery. Hours of combat footage. Day's worth of screen plots and tracks. Weeks of recordings. HOURS AND HOURS OF-

“That's a lot of shit to go through, sir.”

Parker snorted noncommittally and finally glanced up at the four sailors in front of him. He had put out the call on the first day: a call for volunteers with the right security clearance and the sheer willingness to work with the Hulls. Right now he was staring at the results: one Operations Specialist Seaman from the USS Antietam, an Intelligence Specialist 3rd Class from the USS Blue Ridge, and two Crypto Techs (2nd Classes) from one of his old commands. All of the resources of not just the Seventh Fleet, but the whole United States Navy were available to be called upon for This Important Task during Our Challenging Times, and all he got were these four bodies.

“Well, at least you four poor sons of bitches were willing to step up,” Parker finally remarked, standing up. He opened one of the folders and pulled out the first still there; it was of an Abyssal aircraft taken from a very brave merchant sailor at sea. He sighed softly before glancing around the small SCIF given over to him. No windows, one very secure door, and hundreds of thousands of dollars of computers and electronics. They were all in this for the long haul.

>>40874641

Not really no. You don't recruit from the idiot whackjobs who come drooling to your gates.

>Not a lot of fucking people can really deal with them. Most people tend to lose their fucking minds at these cute little things that can wipe the floor

Then, well... You guys haven't shown us this bit in-story very well.

It's mostly just felt like we've been TOLD this, and then simply had the words repeated as if that explains everything. So they start to feel more like bullshit handwaving than actually-good reasons.

If you gave us more examples of people in the Navy who *weren't* able to deal with the shipgirls, and gave us examples of how Goto and Settle passed whatever requirements there were, it'd feel more... well, real.

Instead it feels like all tell and no show for this aspect of things.

“This is uncharted territory, sailors. We're some of the few people who will ever know what happens inside this room; as part of this Task Force, we'll be dealing with some downright unknowable and unpredictable things. Our task right now, though, is to find out where these... Abyssals come from, how they appear, and how we can possibly track them.”

He put the image back in its folder and closed it. “I want the four of you to start by analyzing some of the combat tracks. Focus primarily on the beginning of the engagements: look for anything that might point to the appearance of the Abyssals. If we can start to see *how* they show up and with *what*, we'll stand a better chance of beating them at firepower. Start with the most recent engagements and work your way back. Questions?”

One of the Crypto's raised his hand. “What time is muster, where's the nearest coffee pot, and can we bring in our own tunes to keep us awake?”

All four of the volunteers shared the same glance. Morale was important for a task like this.

“Muster at zero-eight, because anything earlier than that is the devil's work, I'll personally have a coffee mess installed, and you have my go-ahead to kit out this SCIF however you want.”

All four smiled at this.

“Quitting time is 1630, though. Don't think me getting officer on my uniform means I've forgotten all the old tricks.”

The smiles disappeared.

“Bright side is I can guarantee your next promotions will be automatic. CT2 Weiss, I imagine that'll make you happy.” Weiss had been passed over the previous cycle, if Parker's memory served him correctly.

“Any more questions? None? The red phone-” Parker pointed over to a corner, “-goes directly to my office. Call me the moment you find something or even THINK you found something.”

“So what will you be doing, sir?” asked the other CT, a slight hint of suspicion creeping into his voice.

Parker gave him a hooded look. “Don't give me that, I'm not trying to get out of work. I've got an interview with Akagi, the first... Hull the Japanese summoned. She's seen the most shit, so I'm hoping she'll have some insights I can pass along.”

At this, Parker made his way to the security door in order to make his escape. As he stood in the frame, he called out one last order.

“And just because I got shanghaied into eating at the O-Club doesn't mean you nerds get to keep calling me 'sir'. Once a Chief, always a Chief!”

He left with a chorus of “Aye aye, Chief!” following him out, a smile on his face.

- - -

Parker stood in the door frame to his (New! Spacious! With a window!) office, watching the attractive dark-haired female look at the wall he had covered in pictures and certificates. She was looking at one of his most prized: the final knockout during the final round of a boxing championship.

“That was taken when I took the Seventh Fleet Championship by TKO in the final seconds back in 2010,” he remarked, startling the girl.

Akagi - she of the red hakama, if Parker's memory served correct - turned to face him. “You must be Chief Parker. I apologize for intruding in your office; the door was open and...”

“No need to apologize; you must be Akagi. It's a pleasure to meet you,” he replied, offering his hand. As she shook it, he glanced back at the picture. “They started up a boxing tournament in '08 back when I was on Amphibs out of Sasebo. I took the ship prize, followed by the Amphib Group, then the Fleet Activity... took the entire tournament right here in Yokosuka.”

“I had no idea someone in Intelligence would be bold enough to compete in boxing,” Akagi remarked.

Parker gently steered her over to his desk and pulled out a chair for her. “There's a lot people assume about us Intel folks; boxing was one of my favorite sports since I was a little kid.”

He maneuvered around to the other side of his desk and sat down in his chair, throwing his cover onto an empty chair. He leaned back, a distant look in his eyes. Losing himself a little in memory, he found himself giving Akagi a running commentary on himself, a faint smile on his lips.

“I enlisted back in late '03, was stationed on the gators out of Sasebo. I'd always wanted to travel the world, so I figured Japan would be a good place to start. After the culture shock wore off I took it upon myself to explore and found out I liked it here well enough to stay as long as Big Navy would let me. I took every tour available and explored as much of Japan as I could. When time came for me to leave, I took the last opportunity to stay; shore duty here in Yokosuka. A devil's bargain for a salt like me, but it's worked out so far.”

“Are you saying you don't like the land, Chief?” Akagi asked with a slight grin.

“I'm fine with the land; I just prefer the sea more,” Parker responded, faintly smiling back at her. “After all, wouldn't you rather be out to sea?”

“Fair point, but it's always nice to come back home to port,” she responded.

“True.” At this Parker leaned forward. “I'm sure you're wondering why I asked to meet with you.”

Akagi tipped her head back thoughtfully. “Something about an interview? You've probably heard all about myself as well as the other girls through the base rumor mill...” She paused, a coy look growing on her face. “Unless you're trying to shanghai one of us as a secretary.”

Akagi grew serious at this. “What would you like to know?”

Parker pulled out a notepad. “I suppose we should start at the beginning, then...”

[REDACTED UNDER THE WASHINGTON NAVAL TREATY OF 2018 – NBE EXCLUSIVE ACTIVITIES: DISTRIBUTION LIST USA, GRB, CAN, AUS/NZL, GER, JPN]

“...Well, I suppose that's all the questions I can think of; you've been a big help, Akagi.”

Akagi smiled and brushed away the compliment. “It was nothing, Chief. I'm always glad to be of service.”

Parker smiled back. “Seriously, thanks. This will help my team of secret squirrels focus their efforts. Well, that and the coffee.” Akagi giggled as Parker continued. “I suppose that's everything for today, then, unless you have any questions for me?”

Akagi gave him a calculating smirk. “A few... like: is there a special lady in your life?”

The JMSDF is hilariously tiny, especially for the size of the population it protects. Even if they started a crash program for shipgirl-trained commanders, they wouldn't have produced more than a couple yet, training takes time. Training takes more time when you're writing the book doing it. This is in addition to the sudden need to start cranking out officers to fill billets on new ships and replace KIA/MIA/WIA guys.

And not showing people that can't work with the shipgirls- i mean... yeah. The quest follows a group of people on a navy base that are there specifically for the shipgirls, it stands to reason they wouldn't have a lot of interaction with people that couldn't deal with them.

James Parker had always been mindful of the Line: that razor-thin edge between professionalism and duty versus a lifetime of disciplinary infractions and punishing duties. With one question, that Line, which had seemed so very distant when he was warranted, came crashing back with a vengeance. There he was now, teetering on the precipice, an eternity of damnation waiting for him on the other side of the LINETHELINEOHGODCANYOUEVENDOTHATWITHASHIP?

Parker's face flickered as he turned on his most professional image in matters of the heart. Better to rip the bandage off with the honest truth, with a side bullshit.

“There have been four very special ladies in my life. The first showed me the world and all it's wonders; her name was Tortuga. The second helped me become my very best and focused my mind; she was Ashland. The third-” Akagi's face began to dawn with realization, “- made my career soar to new heights; she was the Bonhomme Richard. The fourth made it possible to deal with whatever comes my way; her name was Washington.”

Akagi was now blushing. “Oh, my my~. Chief Parker, that's almost scandalous. Are you telling me you love your old ships?”

Parker made eye contact with her. In for a penny, in for a pound, he figured. “Of course.”

Akagi blushed even more. Parker rose with her as she stood and responded.

“My my~, Chief. Looks like the rumor mill is going to be working overtime, now... You just answered every question I could think of.”

“And probably made a few more.”

“Quite,” Akagi said as she glided to the door. “Until next time, then, Chief.”

Parker saluted roguishly after her. “Fair winds, Akagi.”

X===X===X

"I've been thinking, Skipper..."

You grimace. Those are four of the most dangerous words from Corporal Hate. They meant he had an idea. An idea like shooting at incoming Abyssal torpedoes with a Ma Deuce. Or hitting on a yangire JMSDF ship girl with a yankee twin sister. Or pimping out a cane with a devil dogfish bowl atop it. Or converting the main armament of a ship-girl into a man-portable AOR.

These were not bad ideas on paper. So long as they remained on paper. That you would then douse in holy oil, exorcise with fire (preferably a flamethrower), and scatter the resulting ashes across the sea.

About the only way he could make those words worse were linking them to an “I’m bored” from Sammy.

"What is it?" you dare to ask. Time to chop off the head of this serpent in Eden while it was still early. Hopefully it won’t be anything like a hydra: Cut off one head, two more-

"I think I figured out why Arizona is mute.”

You blink. That was actually tame. And quite pertinent to your myriad concerns regarding the still-difficult-to-fathom ship-girls.

"Go ahead. Shoot."

"We don’t know much about ship-girls,” Hate reminds you. “But we do know they are World War II warships who take the form of human girls. We know their human body parts correspond to ship parts. Like how the bridge of a ship is the head-"

"Yeah," you croak, remembering the crimson waterfalls cascading down Arizona's ruined face after her forehead took a 12-inch shell courtesy BB-4, the Abyssal incarnation of the pre-dreadnought USS Iowa.

"-the props are the legs, the stern is the ass-"

"Of course you'd bring that up," you note.

"Haha," Hate grumbles. "Going by that logic, you can guess what body part corresponds with a ship’s bell."

"Her soul," you immediately reply. (1/?)
>>
>>40874963
Is the cast going to grow anymore in terms of major players? I suspect it's not, but I'd like some comfirmation.
>>
>>40875049
...have we ever actually seen Goto outside of his office or the base CIC?
>>
>>40875068

It's Hate's turn to blink like an owl. "That makes a lot of sense, actually," he admits. "But my idea was that a ship's bell is the voice of a ship-girl."

“That works, too,” you nod.

"And where is Arizona's ship’s bell?" Hate asks.

"Trick question. The battleship Arizona had two bells," you respond. "One is in the clock tower of the Student Memorial Center at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. The other used to be in the visitor center of the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl.”

You say ‘used to be’ because Weird Shit Happened. One of the first places Arizona had investigated was her own Memorial. Think of it like visiting your own grave to pay homage to your corpse while you were still alive.

By that time you had already been promoted to Admiral and transferred to Pearl to assume command of the 'hulls'. CINCPAC assigned you as a glorified tour guide for the recently-revived/returned/resurrected battleship.

Even back then she struck you as melancholic. So you got her a special pass that let her go anywhere and just tagged along as her shadow to keep away troublemakers.

Arizona didn’t need a tour guide. She needed company. A companion.

During the course of the tour, Arizona eventually made it to her old body's ship-bell. You waved off staff and security while she approached the artifact.

And then Weird Shit happened.

The bell was gone. But Arizona had remained mute.

“So if we return Arizona's other ship’s bell to her," you surmise, "She might be able to talk again?"

"It can't hurt to try," Hate says.

You mull over the idea. "If I phrase it as a ‘critical item to upgrade the capabilities of a fighting ship of the US Navy’, I should be able to persuade God Almighty to pull the right strings," you theorize.

You’d even be telling the truth. Arizona’s gotten much better at socializing. She’s practically adopted Willie as some sort of cross between daughter and sister, and she seems to tolerate the attention of the battleship addict Kiyoshimo and the Wild West fan Ikazuchi. But she isn’t close with Hornet or Harder the way she is with Willie, and they were her fellow American ship-girls.

Your orders are pretty straightforward. Don’t rock the boat. Keep the ship-girls happy. Give them what they want so long as the request remains within reason. And this seems to be a good reward for Arizona.

“So how do we go about this?” you tell your sour sounding board.

"I was thinking of taking Sammy with me," Hate proposes.

"Denied," you immediately refuse. "I don't want to explain to God Almighty how the two of you leveled Tucson."

"You’re treating Sammy as if she’s a WMD."

"Because she is. It's a bad idea, Corporal, and you know it."

Your deliberate mention of his new rank makes Hate bristle with, well, hate. He’s still sore about the video of him petting the happily panting PT-109 that played on the big screen during the awarding program.

You have no idea how that leaked. No idea. Honestly.

"Well, if we're on the topic of bad ideas, Skipper, you came up with the crackpot idea to have Harder tour Utah," he accuses.

"I thought it would be good PR for Utah to meet its adopted son… ship… sailor," you correct yourself. “The U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II did assign the entire crew of USS Harder there.”

"Uh, huh. Sure. Let’s go with that. So why did you send Naka with him?" Hate points out.

"She’s the best person to keep him in check. I talked things over with her. Naka was pretty keen on making the trip with Harder. She called it her ‘first U.S. tour’. Besides, she turned out to be a huge hit there, so all’s well that ends well.” (3/?)

“I had no idea that so many Mormon girls from Utah can read, speak, and sing fluent Japanese," Hate grouses.

“You’re just jelly you don’t have a fan club of cute girls.”

In between trading strophe and antistrophe, the two of you hash out the details. You’ll sell the idea to CNO, who’ll persuade the folks at the U of A. Hate will fly back to CONUS to supervise the transfer and transport. It should take a week at most.

Of course this means you will have to keep an eye on Sammy during his absence. But you already have a plan to deal with your personal pocket battleship. It’s brilliant. First you're going to call upon a certain battlecruiser (yes, bully) during her tea-time…

Oh look, another writeup.

It was three weeks after the day “they” emerged; creatures from beyond, terrifyingly strange and aggressive; twisted, warped analogues of the smallest torpedo boat to the largest dreadnaught. Nobody knew what they were, where they came from…or how to stop them.

They could be fought, they could be killed. That had been proven several times around the globe, though losses had been high during the initial attacks. For Canada, the price had been higher than most but less than it could have been.

Montreal, one of Canada’s largest shipping ports, had been attacked. The damage had been extensive, the small and underequipped Canadian fleet stationed at Halifax incapable of mounting a meaningful response. Left completely unmolested, those strange creatures—Abyssals, as they were now being called—had been allowed to wreak near total destruction of the waterfront and cause significant damage to the interior of the city. Hundreds, thousands lay dead, just like the many other attacks that had occurred on the same day.

Even now, ships sailing for Canadian ports had to be wary of attack as the overstretched RCN did what it could. There was hope, as counterparts to the Abyssals had started appearing in and fighting for the countries they had once represented. Yet none had appeared for Canada, despite her once having had the 5th largest navy in the world.

At the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, the mood was somber despite being packed with over twenty thousand fans. The Maple Leafs were facing off against the Montreal Canadians in what would be yet another great game in that longstanding rivalry. But even rivalry paled in the face of the recent and ongoing attacks. The fans were quiet, the teams coming to play not as opponents, but as symbols of Canadian resilience.

The announcer asked for a moment of silence for those lost in the attack on Montreal, the singer of the national anthem stepping forward between the two teams lined up on the ice. She was a local girl from Toronto, worried about her homeland just like everyone else in the stadium. Taking that moment of silence to lower her head, she thought of her brother who was one of those lost in the attack. As she began to sing, she put every last ounce of effort she could into making it the best she’d ever sung.

“O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command.”

As her clear voice rang out of the speakers, the crowd began to join in. First quietly, then a swelling crescendo.

“With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free!”

By the second line every throat in the packed crowd was singing; a well of human emotion filled the very air.

“From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.”
>>
>>40875235
A vague consciousness stirred, pulled by the need of the crowd. It remembered vaguely a desire to fight, a desire to serve the nation it had been built for. It had failed in that purpose, coming too late to fight the enemies against whom it had been made.

“God keep our land glorious and free!”

The emotions swirled higher the lands of Canada under threat. The consciousness began to push, push itself to where it was needed, where it would be allowed to fulfill its ultimate purpose.

“O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.”

She would do it; she would stand on guard and protect her nation, her country and the people in it like she was meant to do.

“O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!”

The last word of the anthem hung in the air, strung out by twenty thousand people, each and every one singing their heart out. She could hear the singing, the music playing along to images of brave men saluting a flag blowing in the salty ocean breeze. As the crescendo hit, there was a flash of blue light and she heard a roar of noise. When the light finally cleared, there was one more person in the arena than there had been before.

Standing directly at the center of the ice was a girl. She was of slightly above average height, standing at nearly 5’7’’ and topped with a shock of long blonde hair. Her slim yet curvy body was covered in a slightly modified black double-breasted undress coat, its double rows of four buttons glinting in the spotlight, a white shirt and black tie tucked underneath. A short black skirt barely covered her lower body, a set of matching black stockings rising so that only a small gap of skin was visible between them. Rounding out her appearance was a backpack that looked like a smokestack. Three arms reached around her from the stack, each sporting an assortment of small guns along their length with a larger three barreled turret on the end.

Of coarse so many of the USN yards were shuttered in the 90's, finding workers to build this shit has to be a headache too.

The latter. There's a LOT of ships in the ghost fleet. As for new construction, they have little reason not to build Arleigh-Burke's: the Leveling Effect goes a long way, and more importantly techniques and intel is available on abyssals now - torpedoes, missiles etc. have some rough profiles to look for, things like that.

The USS Higgins crew was so notable at LA because they had to reinvent how to fight with the weapons they had in a matter of minutes - and they did.

That helps clarify some things, thanks.

>>40874924
>And not showing people that can't work with the shipgirls- i mean... yeah. The quest follows a group of people on a navy base that are there specifically for the shipgirls, it stands to reason they wouldn't have a lot of interaction with people that couldn't deal with them.

That's true yeah. But that means when it comes to giving explanations like "nobody else can really deal with them" (with a subtext of "DUH, what're you stupid") it comes off as.. like an informed ability.

There's a difference between things being obvious or being clearly shown, versus taking things on faith.

Though we've been seeing a lot of the interaction between Settle and Goto and the shipgirls. And it's been trying and stressful. But that's a sort of from-the-inside look, you know? We get to see the shenanigans and raised blood pressure of the Admirals, but we don't see as much of the /outside/ view of people and things. We see these guys suffering, but we're not really seeing the things that disqualify /everybody else/ from being able to get here.

The rabid fans that hounded Shoukaku weren't something unique to *Shipgirls* were they? They apparently act like that in general.
We saw girls cosplaying as Shipgirls in Akihabara.
The café people might or might not have caught on to who/what Settle and Shoukaku were.

All that gave the impression as if the people there were dealing with a celebrity -- which actually worked to humanize the whole phenomena. Very human creepy fans and reactions, you know?

Note to self - write Settle taking a shit. Describe intensity of bowel contractions and force of expulsion, sounds, smell, etc. SHOW, DON'T TELL.

... but seriously now, the most essential reason that qualified military command personnel are so limited has already been shown - that bit where Kaga came close to twisting Settle's arms off and beating him to death with them. Nobody knows exactly why a ship comes back as an abyssal or a girl, one or the other - and so many of the ones that DO come back on our side are so fucked in the head that the navies of the world are rightly terrified of putting a foot wrong. It's not easy to find people of flag rank who have the tactical and strategic acumen suitable for a fleet commander, the adaptability to deal with the unusual nature of their units, the charisma and personality to keep their nuttier members under control and above all, it's nigh impossible to find people who meet all those criteria but are expendable enough that if a kanmasu DOES twist their arms off, the Navy isn't out an irreplaceable officer.

Why do you think the US put a newly-promoted One Star in charge of them?

I have this idea that it would be the USN that first experimented in ship girl refits/rebuilds. They aren't particularly attached to them on a strategic level, and they have a great many low capacity hulls to use.

I'm thinking that DARPA would arrange for the "Fliver destroyers" to be called up so that they could be asked to volunteer for test bed duty. This would be quite dangerous, as the field is the definition of uncharted territory and one of the development goals would be to see just how far things can be pushed. There would be a lot of Martyrs to Science undertones, combined with the usual "what is life" angst.

Awoken Battleships, if any more do so, will most likely be assigned sentry duty of critical locations or major metropolitan centers.

USS Texas is likely to rise, because Texas, and will stay close to home guarding the Gulf and the Oil industry.

USS North Carolina would like be given Philidelphia or Boston.

USS Iowa is guarding the LA metropolitan district.

USS New Jersey would be the obvious choice for New York.

USS Missouri and Wisconsin would be split between San Fran and Seattle.

In days of yore, from Britain's shore,
Wolfe, the dauntless hero came,

And planted firm Britannia's flag,
On Canada's fair domain.
Here may it wave, our boast, our pride,
And joined in love together,
The thistle, shamrock, rose entwine
The Maple Leaf forever!

The Maple Leaf, our emblem dear,
The Maple Leaf forever!
God save our Queen, and Heaven bless,
The Maple Leaf forever!

At Queenston Heights and Lundy's Lane,
Our brave fathers, side by side,
For freedom, homes, and loved ones dear,
Firmly stood and nobly died;
And those dear rights which they maintained,
We swear to yield them never!
Our watchword evermore shall be,
The Maple Leaf forever!

Our fair Dominion now extends
From Cape Race to Nootka Sound;
May peace forever be our lot,
And plenteous store abound:
And may those ties of love be ours
Which discord cannot sever,
And flourish green o'er freedom's home
The Maple Leaf forever!

On merry England's far famed land
May kind heaven sweetly smile,
God bless old Scotland evermore
and Ireland's Em'rald Isle!
And swell the song both loud and long
Till rocks and forest quiver!
God save our Queen and Heaven bless
The Maple Leaf forever!

This likely would have been our national anthem instead of Oh Canada if it hadn't been for the filthy Quebecois complaining it was too British

Any comment or word on the Indian ocean? They must be fucked as there is no real major naval power there. You have to rely on India as the big stick.

It's not just the high temperature that matters, it's how high it is compared to what you are used to/prepared to deal with. Day temperatures here have been 25c+ for a while now and spike over 30c in midday. 30 celsius is Dante's fucking inferno for people used to living at 10 to -10c for 90% of the year.

Combine that with well heated, well insulated houses that retain heat long after the sun is down and you have the recipe for Canadian bacon.

Well as soon as everyone pulled the fuck out of the Gulf area, there was no real navy, except for the Indians.

With the US forces bugging the fuck out, I wonder how long before the Iran vs Arab war really kicks off.

They are the only ones in the area who can actually somewhat service high tech shit once all the Westerners decide to fuck off and go home.

I don't even want to think what the ground situation with all the terrorist groups out in the middle east is.

ISS was making and losing ground with dealing with shit like the air attacks from the US and other nations. That is why I figured shit went sideways when the Abyssals showed up.

Not to mention most of the nations there having to import food.

>>40877092
The entire commonwealth too I would imagine, though apart from Canada I don't think any of the other colonies like Australia would have enough surplus assets to be able to send them overseas to protect convoys.

I should figure out a list of how many RCN ships could return. We had 5 carriers, a few cruisers, lots of destroyers, TONS of frigates and corvettes and some assorted support ships. Even a captured U-boat or two.

The way I see it is that the RCN doesn't have the same sort of "hangups" some of the other navies do. They are not the focus of rampant nationalism like the Japanese, or got murdered by dumb politics like the French. In fact a lot of the RCN never even saw action, only stood prepared for a threat that never came be it Axis or Soviet. So I don't think they would resent living a quiet career only to be peacefully scrapped decades later.

As the old adage goes, "They also serve who stand and wait". And now the time has come.

WE STAND ON GUARD FOR THEE BITCHES

Newfie dogs are known to manifest as frigates all over the world, sometimes only temporarily. They are well known for rescuing people from various aquatic dangers, even without their shipdog forms. The largest concentration of "stable" frigate dogs has been entrusted to a certain Lt Love of the Royal Canadian Navy. The Lieutenant does not hate his job, nope, not even the slightest bit.

To the world at large Canada Goose Corvettes are a wild rumour. The only proof that they exist being shaky cellcam footage recorded by terrified fishermen, widely debunked.

Analyzed top secret undersea sound recordings match the detonation of WW2 era antisub mortar and depth charge attacks. Only the expected sonar pings that would normally accompany such attacks are... different.

Operation Regenbogen & Operation Deadlight
The first was the German plan to scuttle all their U-boats by the end of the war which succeeded in scuttling little over 200 of them, nearly half the force.

The second was the British plan to take the 116 U-boats under their control, most which barely saw war and were left to rot, out into open water to use them all for target practice.

Reckon New Zealand would survive? We're pretty self-sufficient for food. Oil might be a different question, but without imports of new cars, that might not matter as much.
