Your name is Sierra Beckhoff, and you are hellborn – part mortal, part demon. You have recently killed a pack of demons threatening San Francisco, and graduated high school. Now, you are travelling cross country on the ultimate road trip with your friends.

This is the time for you to discover your inner spirit animal, explore America (and Canada, you guess) accrue landwells, meet interesting people, and kill them.

You’re currently in Fresno, visiting some graves. Surprisingly, the alleged friend of your dead dad works there, and despite knowing all about how he was supposedly a Nazi back in the day, the undertaker didn’t even know your dad’s been dead for nearly ten years. Some friend he is.

It’s time to blow this dead-people stand and get back on the road in pursuit of ultimate cosmic power.

Stress: 34
Sanity: 97
Bloodlust: Subdued

“I wish I could have done more for you,” Monty tells you, taking a deep breath. “Still hard to think David’s not off in Wyoming someplace, remarried with a farm. But that man had his priorities straight, so I reckon he’s not. He’d have his little girl with him.” He shakes his head. “Now that’s a shame.”

“What’s a shame is screw you,” you tell Monty the undertaker. Or at least you assume he’s the undertaker. What is an undertaker, even? You dismiss the train of thought – you’re too pissed for thoughtful reflection. (+3 Stress: 37) “You don’t understand anything. Spare me the cheap pity BS.”

Rowan sighs and stands, fed up with the whole situation. “Thank you for your help,” she says.

You fold your arms. “We’re leaving,” you say firmly.
>>
>>40910481

Monty’s expression is grim. “If you ever need a favor, you can give me a call,” he says, a kind of pathetic feeling wafting from him.

“How about this for a favor – you keep some freaking flowers on those graves over there,” you say, pointing at where your mom and sister are grounded forever. Then, scowling, you storm off back toward the car. You just can’t endure Monty’s self-sorry demeanor anymore, especially not frying out in the sun. (+3 Stress: 40)

Rowan must have stayed behind to be polite or some crap, because she doesn’t catch up to you until you’re in the parking lot, heading straight for the SUV.

“My freaking dad was a Nazi,” you growl to yourself.

But Ro’s near enough that she probably thought you were talking to her. “That doesn’t have to mean he was bad,” she says. “It’s not like the Third Reich were all about freedom of choice.”

“I don’t care if he killed people or whatever,” you say, getting the keys out and unlocking the door. “I just... it’s kind of important, right? I mean. Like, I should have known he was the freaking Red Skull.”

You open the door and climb in to the leather-scented oven. Gratefully though, there’s now something between you and the sun. (-1 Stress: 39) Ro climbs in the other side, a little more quiet than usual – you’re both still wrapping your heads around this.
>>
>>40910490

You squint out the window. You think you see Mori, Vik, and Xan getting out of the shade of a tree to head back to the car, with Reeber in tow. Maybe they thought you’d be longer.

“Well,” says Rowan, “you know something now, right?”

>Let’s go pick up the girls. Spare them a minute in the heat or whatever.

"Any time anybody tells me anything about my parents, it's about how awesome they were. Fat lot of good that does me."

I think Sierra defaults to anger, not sadness, in emotional situations.
>>
So just how big is Reeber?
>>
“Yeah, actually I don’t,” you say, “I don’t know crap. Some random dried up jerk in a graveyard knows more about my dad than I do.”

“It’s not like it’s your fault you don’t know,” says Rowan. “And besides, it’s not like Monty knew everything either. He didn’t even know you were hellborn.”

“I guess he didn’t,” you say, frowning. You still have an uneasy feeling in your gut, like you blew off class but somebody is going to find out. “But... like, why the hell didn’t my dad just... you know, just sit me down or something before he took off and died?”

Rowan looks at you with sympathy. “You weren’t that old,” she says. “And it sucks, but he might have been waiting for when you were older. I mean, that’s how my dad did it. It’s hard to deal with being different, especially when you’re a kid.”

“Yeah well, you’d be surprised how well kids can deal with some stuff,” you say, a bitter tone creeping into your voice. You grip the steering wheel and start up the engine, with an eye on the rest of your friends. The vehicle rumbles to life. “Let’s pick up the girls and get the hell out of this place. Spare them a minute in the sun. Screw the sun,” you say.

Rowan peers out the window at the sun. “Screw you,” she says conversationally, shaking her fist at the star in question.

You drive out of the lot and pull up to the sidewalk execute a super tactical pickup of your friends. As they’re piling back in, you find your grip tightening on the steering wheel. “I’m not pasty... am I?” you ask.

“Well. Some people don’t mind pasty,” Ro says.

You snort and reach over to whack her on the shoulder, but she blocks. You’ll just have to get her later, you guess.

--

A sharp snap on your nose breaks you out of your sleep.

“Quit that,” you say, slowly scowling and opening your eyes to see Xanissil peering over the edge of the seat with a predatory stare.
>>
>>40911977
>“I’m not pasty... am I?” you ask.
I didn't vote for it, but I'm glad it was included.
>>
>>40911977

“We are in your forest park,” she informs you. “I thought you might desire to gaze on its lush virgin beauty.”

“Gross,” you say. You sit up in the back seat, rubbing at the crick in your back from sleeping in such a weird position. It’s dark enough that your shadow sight’s better than light vision, but you just opt for regular colors and all that since you can see out the windows.

The slight glow from the headlights in front of you bathe the trees whooshing by on either side of the car in an eerie light. The ground here rises and falls in great mountainous slopes, and the road winds to follow the contours of the land. You catch traces of bare rock and deep valleys. If it was day, you’d probably be treated to some spectacular view of some wonderfully blue lake surrounded by forest.

Vik drives, and Ro sits shotgun, both watching the little two-lane road snake up on ahead.

“What time is it?” you ask quietly. You don’t know why you’re being quiet, but maybe it’s because you don’t want to break the peacefulness of the night.

“Late,” says Xan, glancing at Moriah’s sleeping for next to her.
>>
>>40912028

Vikrama looks at you in the mirror. “We passed park boundaries a while back,” she says, turning her attention back to the road. “From what I’ve read, I think there’s a few definite landwell candidates here.”

“We can check one out tonight,” says Rowan. “Everything’s kind of far from the road, but I know you handle midnight runs through perilous terrain pretty well.” She roots around in her bag. “The radios are all charged up if you want to give one a shot – I’ve got my NVG’s and everything so I can follow you from the sky, you know, so you’ve got some backup.”

“What’re the places again?” you ask.

“Stuff we can do tonight, there’s three I think are good,” says Vikrama.

>Tamarack Mountain: Probably the most involved hike. Supposedly there’s still snow at the top. But you have a pretty good track record with mountains.

I'm actually cool with whatever. Nelder gives me some concerns about how easy it is too get to, so even if it's not already claimed then it's likely that there'd be people faffing around if we tried to use it to portal through or something, but other than that I'm cool with whatever.

After some deliberation, you come to the consensus that Fresno Dome is the place to go. It’s pretty much smack dab in the middle of the forest, and you can see everything that’s going on pretty much in all directions, once you get past the grueling hike to the top.

Anyway, it’s night, so it won’t be nearly as hot out – especially since the altitude’s so high. If there was anything about the drive up here, is that it was up, up, and more up.

Vikrama navigates successfully to some campsite off in the woods somewhere, and everybody gets out.

“We shall make camp here,” Xanissil declares, leaping onto a nearby boulder and scampering to the top. She plants her foot victoriously on the crest of the rock.

“I don’t usually sleep on rocks,” says Moriah, setting down a tent bag on the ground.

Xan shrugs and sits on the rock, kicking off her shoes and lying out like a lizard. “I will accompany you, Sierra,” she says, gazing up at the inky black sky, spattered with shining dots all over the place. “The sky is luminescent with stars – one does not have to be Verwelken to feel the thrill of the night.”

Rowan, meanwhile, is unpacking her serious business outfit from the back of the SUV and changing from her comfy road trip clothes, strapping on knee pads and scabbards and donning her Seraph-style vest-jacket thing.

Vikrama smiles at you and goes to help Moriah with tent setup. “The dome’s up that way,” she says, pointing off through the trees and upward toward a not-so-distant black silhouette. Fresno Dome still feels imposing though, even far away. “Me and Mori will take care of camp and dinner.”

“I didn’t agree to this,” says Moriah, shaking out a tent.
>>
>>40912771

“You should have thought about that before you agreed to it, darling,” Vik replies.

Rowan, meanwhile, tests out her night vision goggles. “Wow. These are actually really cool,” she says, playing with some switches on the side while she scopes out the nearby campsites.

Reeber just stands still at the edge of the clearing, sensing that something important is about to happen. He’ll be good to go for sure.

>You think this is actually dangerous? I mean, landwell hunting’s never really been too serious before, unless there were people trying to kill me.
>Let me try those. (Steal Rowan’s goggles)
>I take it you’ve done stuff like this before, Xan.

Sword, a gun, our chainmail if we have it. Seriously, Harvey's chainmail is a godsend. Stuff's the bomb. Our assorted trinkets like the shield charm and ring too but I'm fairly sure we never take them off so it's not like that actually counts as gearing up. More like check to make sure we didn't forget them.
>>
>Do some Kethgi and chill out. You’re still a little riled from stupid Morty or whoever.
>>
So, guys, when we eventually get back from this trip how would you feel about having Wolfgang help us put a ranged strike enchant on our switchblade? It'd be way better than the mace and we might actually use it since we carry the knife around all the time while the gaudy mace is stuck in a box in the garage.
>>
You push past Rowan so you can retrieve your myagic chainmail from the trunk and shimmy into it, taking an extra second to put your shoes away. Then you buckle Zelathis at your hip, and go ahead and strap your Ruger in its neat shoulder holster on over top. You double check your shielding charm bracelet thing and your danger ring, and satisfied all is charged and deadly, you look to Rowan, who’ still screwing around with her fancy night vision goggles. Xan is just basking in the starlight, totally spaced out.

“What are we standing around for?” you ask impatiently. “Get off your butts and let’s go.” You follow your own advice and dodge off into the woods.

Xanissil catches up, sans beret, but with a buckler affixed to one arm – the vambrace that holds the shield in place doubles as a sheath, and she’s got her spike dagger thing tucked inside. Typically, she’s without shoes as well.

“Alone at last,” she breathes, shrugging out of her glamors. She’s still her, just a redder, more angular, and sharper version of her.

You go ahead and do the same. “Glamors suck,” you say.

Reeber presses his massive weight against your leg and taps one his horns against the spines coming out of your elbow. He’s always happy to go full-sizen. Big dogs are what it’s all about.

Rowan sails down through the treetops like a crazy tactical hawk, feathering her wings with a dexterous swoop, catching the air and stopping midair. She drops down, grinning at you and Xan like a loon through her ultra-spectral operator headgear goggles. “I am the night. I am Ro-wing,” she says.

“Ech. Seraphim are all the same,” Xan says, a notably distasteful flavor to her aura.

>You’re just mad cause you don’t have wings. I know I am.
>Really? I need to meet more Seraphs then.
>Hear that Ro? You’re being discriminated against.

“You’re just mad cause you don’t have wings. I know I am,” you say, clenching and unclenching your claws.

“Thousand hells, any time one gets sky born, it’s all poetry and nonsense,” Xanissil continues, with passion.

“Poetry and nonsense, huh?” Ro asks.

“Yeah,” you say, nodding in agreement. “You’re being discriminated against. I mean. I’d totally add something way racist too, but I kind of lack the terminology.”

“It is straightforward,” says Xanissil, in a matter of fact tone. “Simply say hooper a lot, and grumble ceaselessly about the first thing that comes to mind.”

“Hooper?” you ask.

Xan reaches over and raps Rowan on the halo with a knuckle. “Pow!”

Ro recoils, hands covering the gold ring above her head. “Hey!”

“Because of the hoops,” Xanissil tells you, tapping her head with two knowing claws.

“They’re called halos,” Rowan corrects her, sounding defensive.

“As I said previously,” Xan repeats, “the frequent usage of hooper is imperative.”

“Well you weren’t using it,” you say.

“Yes, because you have made Rowan your sister, and by your decree it is done,” Xan replies. “I will not deride you or yours.”

“Well that’s kudos to you then, I guess,” you say, “but how many Seraphim do you actually know? Aside from ones you’ve engaged in battle and stuff. I know the whole angels versus demons thing is a big deal.”

“I have not engaged a Seraph in battle, nor have I had the misfortune of encountering one before our journey hither to thee,” Xan says.

Rowan smiles. “So how do you know what all Seraphim are like, then?”

“How do you know that there is a continent called Africa? How do you know that your body is comprised of infinitesimal units arrayed as one, acting in harmony?” she counters. “Knowledge exists beyond the primary heritor.”

Ro laughs. “Geeze, Xan. You wouldn’t do half bad on a debate team.”
>>
>>40915104

“Power is weakness when bereft of the wisdom to wield it,” she replies.

“Amen to that,” you say, edging off to keep on your way. “Enough chit chat – onwards and upwards!”

“To the skies!” Rowan shouts, running into flight and skimming into the air.

“All the same,” Xan mutters, under her breath.

--

Switchbacks. Why so many switchbacks?

You might have let Xanissil take the lead a couple times so you could cheat geometry a little. Nothing beats getting away with only a light jog while she’s out there at a dead run. Rowan circles around like some kind of nighthawk turkey vulture, swooping down occasionally to hassle the two of you. Stupid wings.

Anyway, trees give way to light foliage, which in turn gives way to sparse grass, which then dies out entirely toward the top of the huge rocky dome, until you’re heaving your way up steep granite slopes, devoid of anything more than lots and lots of rocks.

The night sky stretches above you in a great void of blackness, dotted with shimmering motes of light. Except not all those motes of light are stars.

A cool, silent power throbs sluggishly through the granite under your feet, some of it sparkling into the air like mist off a waterfall.

You can feel the pressure of the wondering life here, stretching out in all directions. It’s not quite like Muir woods or anywhere else – it’s big, but quiet, stony, but vibrant with growth.

You reach the peak of the dome, and you see the rich textures of the leaves in the far distance, the cool, glassy surfaces of lakes and rivers, and the grainy peaks of mountainous... mountains. Peaks? Whatever. Braille-o-vision is the best thing since teleportation, from a pure badass factor point of reckoning.
>>
>>40915135

Rowan soars past below the peak, showing off the tops of her feathery ultra-soft downy wings to you and Xan.

“Is there a well here?” Xan asks.

You jerk a thumb back toward the starry light hanging above the granite about fifty yards back, sequestered between rocky outcroppings. “Over there,” you say.

“Let us claim it,” she says eagerly.

Turning back from the magnificent vista, you consider the situation more generally. The colorless silvery light is a good indication nobody’s going to get mad, so you might as well go take care of business and spin the wings-roulette.

But... the power here does feel kind of different than the other wells so far. Is that just cause you’re not in the Bay Area, or is it for some other reason?

We don't actually know how to do that beyond just eyeballing the thing. Every colorless well we've seen has been unclaimed, every well that was a color was claimed. This one is colorless, so it's probably not claimed. I guess we could vote to roll for landmaster meditation whatever to see if we can feel it sending power off somewhere, but we've never done that and don't know if it would even work on a crit success. So yeah.

I hope we get the chance to ask Xan about her parents. Seems a good way to learn more avout her and Halth culture.

Have Ro and Xan close their eyes, and have Reeber turn around, make sure no one else is observing this. Have Monster do a bit of recon, give the air a nice big sniff to check for any odd scents, see if our magic sensing or Landmaster senses pick up anything weird.

Make sure that Ro and Xan are a decent distance away, and behind cover. Then claim the well.

Well, whatever the reason is, you’ll figure it out soon enough.

You get everybody together and do a team huddle, and you explain your plan in detail.

“So your plan is for us to stand really close but no peeking?” Ro asks, taking a break from her NVGs.

“Well. Yeah,” you say, a soft heat waving off your shoulders.

Xanissil is not impressed. “This is not a good plan.”

Reeber though is all in, you’re pretty sure.

“I’m the Imperiate, it’s a good plan if I say it is,” you reply.

Xan nods, now impressed. “If that is your will,” she says.

“So, you’ll be able to tell if anything wonky’s going on?” Ro asks. “I mean, how exactly does that work, anyway?”

“You know,” you explain, “it’s just like that part in Mystery Men. The kid only goes invisible when nobody’s looking at him. So if there’s some weird magic or a landmaster who knows what’s going on, I won’t go invisible. Or... okay, it’s not exactly like that, but you know what I mean.”

“As long as you are privy to your own meanings,” Xan says, “it is enough.”

You realize you kind of don’t know what you mean, but you also realize that some things don’t need to make sense to be true. (-1 Sanity: 96) “All right,” you say, settling your claws on the diamond-shaped pommel of your Power Ranger lightning sword, “I’m all in. If you don’t see red fireworks in like thirty seconds, come get me.”

Ro stoops down and covers Reeber’s eyes. The hellhound doesn’t like it, but he shuts up when you tell him to stop freaking out and summon his two buddy hounds to keep him company. The summons are almost scrawny in comparison to your Royal, but hey, what can you do. You make sure they know who’s boss before moving to leave.

“I don’t like your plans,” Ro says, rubbing Reeber’s leathery, fleshy neck with a hand to calm him.

“Too late!” you say, turning tail and running off toward the landwell. You shoot out Monster to scout in front of you, and he manages to circle easily about the well like nothing.

It’s time.
>>
>>40918366

You run over a low outcropping of rock, speed finding you instead of the other way around. Nobody’s watching, and each footfall carries you just a big further than you thought it would. Except you’re kind of expecting that, so maybe not? Whatever.

Anyway, it’s all good over the even terrain, but when you’re about ten yards off from the landwell, your speed fails you. Someone is watching you.

Or... something?

You feel a connection between the well and you, but not... it’s hard to explain. But whatever it is, the silvery light before you vibrates violently, like a speaker pumping out low bass, and the earth surges out from beneath you in a sharp heave of motion.

You catch yourself mid fall and land poised in al ow crouch, eyes locked on the well, claws and tendrils ready for anything except what happens next.

The well bursts to life, ribbons of white light whipping out all over the place, like one of those electro-sphere things you’re supposed to put your hands on – they converge on you, and you move to dodge.

But the movement of the landwell’s sudden tendrils are too quick – they snap onto your forearm and the edges of your shadow, searing your flesh and shadow-self like a hot iron, and siphoning power from your core. (-10 PP: 31/41; +6 Stress: 25/103; -3 HP: 31/34)

Your left arm and your upper left tendril go numb – Monster dives in to bite at the twin tendrils locked onto you, but a third tendril from the landwell lashes out and latches onto the imp, giving him something a lot worse to worry about as his body starts cracking all over with white power. The imp screeches and flies off with a limp. (Monster: 3/5 HP)

You claw at the painful tendrils locked onto you, and find your claws cutting through the soft light like it was an airy fluid – the weirdo lines of light dissipate momentarily at being sliced and diced, but more tendrils wave in to take their place. You already see the old ones repairing the damage, flecks of light swimming back through the air to reform.

You scramble back from the phenomena, but several of the tendrils dart in at you too fast to dodge.

Except they strike an invisible wall about a yard off from your face, concentric golden rings echoing out from the points of impact, each ringing a low, clear tone – while the tendrils from the well aren’t disturbing the ambient shadows, the light from the shield stirs them up angrily.

Rowan alights beside you with hard beating of her wings, one hand outstretched before her toward the weird waving tentacles, the other holding Aleopher out to the side. “This is new,” she says, her voice strained and muscles tensed as she holds the whipping lines at bay.

You clamor to your feet - Xan and Reeber with the hounds sprint forward at your back.

“I’ve got this,” you say, your voice shaking more than you thought it would. Thing doesn’t like getting cut, and you’ve got just the trick. You glower at the jellyfish well thing and let out a low growl from the base of your throat, tinging your voice with your will and power. (-4 PP: 27/41)

You hit the resonate frequency of the darkness, and you hear incoherent screeches of anger from the resident shadows – they bristle against the sound, sharpening defensively.

The effect of sharp shadows on soft targets is impressive. Practicing on watermelons had pretty gnarly results, cutting deep through the rine ,and you have a feeling that thrashing around only worsens the injuries.

Lucky for you, this landwell is all about thrashing its little suckers all around, and they don’t fare so well. The tendrils shred to pieces, like confetti, tearing apart into a whole lot of nothing.

“Nice,” says Rowan, relaxing a little at the cessation of attacks.

“What manner of entity was that?” Xan asks, pulling up at your side with your hounds on her heels.

Your danger ring begins buzzing, and Reeber circles around the landwell, a deep growl rattling from between his sharp teeth.

A feeling of vague, senseless anger smokes from the core of the vibrating well, though not quite from the center.

Uh oh.
