Your name is Thomas Cairn, and you have no clue what you jumped into. Your dad was a famous superhero known as The Red Rider, and he showed up dead in an alley about a year ago. When you were checking out a storage unit you inherited from him, everything changed. You gained his powers, a brain able to calculate faster than light, and an uncanny affinity for machinery.

Using your powers, you were easily able to get into the world's top engineering college, Central Cosmopolis Institute. You never moved past Dad's ideas though, and you couldn't stand the gap The Red Rider made, so you filled it. You made a suit of power-armor and became The Red Knight, however, you lacked experience. So you managed to get a mentor, Wrench, so that you could learn the Hero business. Of course the only way to learn is experience, so you spent a good portion of your free time breaking up Mafia operations around Cosmopolis.

The people have taken a shine to you. They were scared about The Red Rider's "hiatus", but now that you're here they think that, like other normal Supers, he passed on the torch. The crowds love you, every time you fly by at least 20 phones come out, but no good comes without a price, and not everybody can be saved.

Harry left. He couldn't take what happened, so his parents took him home for the summer. They probably already have an appointment with some overrated shrink lined up. Harry didn't want to go, but even you had to admit that something was wrong, and coming from you that's saying something. He wouldn't get out of bed when it was morning, which isn't odd, but he just... wouldn't get over it. He wouldn't even talk to Monica.

Monica is still here, but she isn't taking it well. It was to be expected when someone is shot right next to you. Jeana and her friends have been working on keeping her together, and that seems to work, but she seems to have developed Haemophobia. Big fancy word for saying that she is petrified at the sight of blood, which doesn't seem so bad until it comes into practice. She can't even stand the sight of rare steak, so why even bother living... no, bad brain, that's terrible.

You, on the other hand, are taking this well. Why are you taking this so well? You shouldn't, this should haunt your dreams, but you don't feel any disturbance at all. You cried when you got done burning the body, but you always cry at funerals, and you haven't felt sad about it since. At least you have it over with. It's over... why does that work? You figured out that the Brain-Wave Normalizer really disrupts psychics, but it really doesn't effect emotions. Right?

Research for another time. You're going to...

The business needs some help, a shot in the arm or something, and what better way than with some help from the father himself. That was weird, but RON needs to get more money and such so that you can build more to make more and...

"RON, focus on the stocks, we need the money."

"Sir, the companies you have shares in have taken a massive climb recently. I sold the shares to get the money into new companies before the old shares collapse. The net worth of your stocks has increased drastically."

"How drastically are we talking RON?"

"You currently have 1.5 Million invested, with another 100,000 in transfer."

"RON, do you feel joy? 'cause I sure as hell do."

"I don't feel joy, but the closest approximation I feel is satisfaction at a job well done."

You, after that wonderful news, decide to do some hob-nobbing and get some connections in place for new products. You have always been good at gaining support, so success was expected. The first events you look for are conferences and Tech shows to get your name out there. Cosmopolis being a shining example of a modern city, these are in no short supply. After showing off in front of some executives and rubbing elbows with the elite, you come out with a few partnerships.

Jeana's been in the back of your mind for a while, your last attempt at a dinner date involved zombies. She deserves a more enjoyable time than that, so you make a reservation at Calabrino's for two. It's the most expensive place in town and you aren't really a fan of the food, but Jeana said she liked it so that's good enough for you.

"Hey Jeana, I have reservations for two at Calabrino's. Now if only I had a person to go with."

"What's the occasion?"

"I'll tell you when we get there. I'm paying this time so I wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth." Hey, you got a saying right!

"Okay, you can pick me up at 6."

"Wait, pick you up?"

"I'm not riding a bike in heels so I need a ride."

"Fine. Love you."

"You too."

Ugh, now you only have about two hours to get ready for high-class dining.

Cairn Industries, putting your problems to rest.

>The date costs $40,000

You manage to get everything together and the limo arrives as soon as you pull up to your dorm in your junker.

"I have a ride for Thomas Cairn?" A guy in the stereotypical chauffeur outfit looks at you.

"That would be me." You pass a him your ID and credit card, he swipes the card and the little machine makes a beep.

You have him drive up to the girl's dorm and Jeana gives you a look of utter bewilderment. She is dressed in a seafoam green dress that goes really well with her hair, it really accentuates how completely confused she is.

"Hop on in, I promise it isn't stolen." She gets in and you talk for awhile about how things are going and summer classes and all that jazz as you ride to dinner. She seems really impressed by all of this showmanship and is eagerly awaiting the news about what the occasion is.

You reach Calabrino's at 7 and the chauffeur says he'll be back at 9, then he drives off. The host checks your reservations and sees that they're in order, then a waiter takes you to the table. The restaurant is styled after Greek architecture, which makes it ironic how expensive it is. Wow, that was a bit too far.

"So, what is the occasion for this and how did you pay?"

"Well, first of all, I'm now a millionaire because of investing my dad's inheritance, so I want to celebrate. I also made some connections for my business, I invent stuff now, I'll show you later. Oh yeah, one of them is an AI that works the stocks for me." Maybe you weren't as suave as you could have been, but you had to get it out sometime.

"What? I don't believe the AI part. That sounds like you're pulling my leg."

You pull out your phone and touch the app that contacts RON. "RON, say hello to Jeana and tell her who you are."

"I am RON, I was made as a personal assistant to Tom, right now I am working the stock market to maximize profits."

"Well... how?" She is even more confused now.

"It would be even more confusing if I explained it fully, but why not just enjoy it for what it is."

The rest of the date goes smoothly, but seeing as it's Sunday and you both have class early tomorrow, you decide to hit the hay when you get back to the dorm.

After pulling some strings with some friends in the Auto industry, you manage to get funding and support for an expo to reveal a "New Breed of Automobile". You kept it vague that way it would attract more attention, and you weren't disappointed. Only a few days after the news dropped people were starting to speculate on where you came from and what this car was. What can a college student from Comet City make that impressed enough to warrant an expo?

Jeana has taken to your business well enough, she still acts exactly the same way, and she doesn't ask for money or stuff. But even she want's to know what the car is. You keep silent up until the day before the ceremony, when you release a single phrase.

"The Tempest: Taking the world by storm."

The media goes wild over what it could mean, leading up to the opening speech of the expo. The opening address comes from a rotund man in a white suit and a ridiculous cowboy hat. It really is one of the most boring things you've ever heard, but it sets the stage for you quite well. You walk out to the podium and give an impassioned speech about how you picked yourself up by your bootstraps after your dad's untimely death and made his legacy something to be proud of. You end with how you hope to do him justice with your actions. Everyone at the ceremony is touched that you would share that with them.

The expo is now open!

>Expo cost: $135,000

A lot of bands aren't in town, but there are a few. They just wanted tons of cash, but you payed them, gotta look good. You also got some bands from CCI to play for free as the opening act, but they were kind of underwhelming. Luckily, your other inventions bring just enough buzz to keep up the hype. Sales should skyrocket after this.

You find a bit of a niche in Q&A panels among other people in the expo as a guy who doesn't give fake answers. It's a busy day, and a few new cars were announced, most were electric cars for efficiency. Those won't sell nearly as well as a literally fuel-less car. Everyone seems to have fun since you booked some pretty high-end bands that are popular right now.

Finally, the showcase has come, and the party that's going on right now is kicking. Everybody is either drinking, dancing, talking, or swapping ideas on what The Tempest is. You walk around the crowd, talking to everybody in turn, they all seem very excited, and you swear you see a few actors and big names around. The stage manager calls you back to get ready for action.

I have an idea.

Let's get the cars with the three most fuel-efficient engines on the market today, line them up next to ours, give them all a full tank of gas, and leave them going at full throttle for as long as possible.

When the other cars cut out after a hour or two, or just simply break down, and ours is still going strong after a full day of Expo, our point will be made.

You put on the suit and tie, you then decide to grab some sunglasses. You put them on and your mind reels, screaming at some unknown force, then, just as quick as it started, it stops. You feel a chill down your spine and a sense of dread. Maybe you're paranoid. Yeah that must be it.

>The upheaval has begun, the end in motion, the hare is safe, but the fox can see.

You walk out, strangely calm after all that weird stuff going on, and queue the video of the Theoretical Physics class last year. This is the stepping stone on the path to greatness...

"This was me, about a year ago, in Theoretical Physics class. On that board are the beginnings of The Tempest, the butterfly's wings if you will."

The video flips to a picture of the Cairnsium core and the machine that makes it, all covered in paneling so nobody can see how it works.

"This, is the result of those wings, it is a material of my design that produces more power than the Hoover Dam. The particulars are a trade secret, but know that it is 100% safe so long as it isn't touched."

"And this..." The trapdoor underneath the stage opens and fog machines and fans give the illusions of a cyclone, before revealing a sleek, red car.

"Is The Tempest. It gets as many miles to the gallon as you can drive, since it never has to be refueled. I know that it's hard to believe, but I will demonstrate. The parking brake is down as of right now, I am going to place a cinder block on the accelerator and leave it there until it overheats, runs out of fuel, or quits running for any reason." The stage hands open the door, put the block in place and the tires squeal.

You see a flash of light from across the campus...

You keep talking as you move rather suddenly to the side, causing the light to vanish from view. You find yourself glad that you did, because the next second the stage next to you sprouts a hole. Everyone seems unaware, but you see a silhouette run across the rooftop of a building and vanish.

The rest of the event goes without incident, the tires squeal well into the next day when you think you made your point and you pick up the block. You already have people lining up to buy the design from you, but you aren't confirming them yet. That would be bad business. You show off some tricks that the Nanomachines can do and everyone seems thoroughly impressed by the display.

You head back to the dorm after the second day of the expo and find a man in your room.

"Who are you and why are you in my room?"

"Thomas Cairn, I'm Jules and I was sent from the future to ensure your safety, I may be a bit late due to a detour. Time travel isn't that precise."
