You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the new wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful six-winged angel of the same name. Now you have come to the White Watchtower, a fortress close to the border between the Forsaken Lands and the kingdom of Iseria, to train with the crusaders so that you can protect yourself from the demons that might come after you now that the sword is in your possession.

Your last day at the Red Watchtower passed pretty uneventfully. You talked to Galadriel about Asher, learned some more about House Lione, and Joan said...something to Avaline. On the bright side, at least now Avaline is backing away some. However, things got complicated when you learned the squad that would be escorting you and the others from the Red Watchtower to the king's palace was Aleria's. Now, you'll have to earn House Lione's approval while hiding the fact theres a demon and a semi-revived demon lord with you.

Oh yeah, and apparently Avaline's in the same squad as well. Great.

The trip to Galloway's capital, Tarrin, lasts about a week. Along the way, you stop at a small town to resupply and relax. Your identity, of course, was kept a secret, so as not to stir up a commotion. Already though, the locals are talking about you and your visit. The conversations you've overheard regarding you have ranged from false (“I heard he was a knight in the Iserian king's court”) to startlingly accurate (“Someone told me a imp tried to kill him by sharpening a practice spear. Someone else was hit by it though”) to weird (“There's a guy in his honor guard who never takes off his helmet. They say it's because he's hiding a third eye.”) and amusing (“Did you hear? One of the guys in the Champion's honor guard, think his name was Rainhard? I hear he used to shovel horse shit for a living.”) However, you manage to avoid drawing too much attention to yourself and arrive at the capital of Tarrin a few days later.

The first thing that strikes you about the capital is how large it's walls are. Back in the day, when demonic invasion was a common thing, cities would have big walls and a dedicated guard patrolling them 24/7. The wealthier cities had large stone walls and siege weapons to protect them, while the smaller villages had only a wooden palisade and a handful of militia. Nowadays, most towns don't bother with walls unless they're close to the border with the Forsaken Lands, but a few cities, like Morsland, still build them just in case. The most impressive walls are those surrounding the older cities, the ones which stood through the old crusades. This is one of those cities, surrounded by a massive stone wall so tall that the guards on top look like tiny specks. You hope there are rails up there, because falling from that height would be certain death. In addition, you see what appears to be some sort of arcane runes carved into the stone walls, partly covered in ivy. What they do, and whether they still work or not, you haven't a clue.
>>
>>40932903
The second thing you notice is the guards at the front gate. Back in Morsland, a guard's standard issue was chainmail, a great helm, a simple cloth tabard with the city's heraldry, and a weapon. Simple and effective, put a pain in the ass to wear for hours on end. By contrast, however, the guards here look more like nobles than simple guards. Their armor has a golden sheen, with red plumes on their helmets and a brilliant red tabard with the city's heraldry. The weapons, as far as you can tell from here, are in excellent condition as well, though that's a sign that could be a sign that they're hardly used.

The guards motion for your escort to stop, and one of the guards approaches your horse. “State your business, please.” He asks, with what sounds like a sharper version of the Galloway accent you've heard thus far.

“We're from the Red and White Watchtowers. We've come for an audience with the king.”

“Then one of you is the Champion, yes? We've been informed of your arrival ahead of time. Please wait a moment, we'll open the gate for you.”

The guard gives the command, and the massive stone door blocking your path begins to grind to the left, as someone on the other end turns a wheel to open it. Once open, the guard follows you inside the city, and points forward down the street you're currently on.

“If you'll follow this road all the way, you should find the king's palace in no time. You'll find many stores along the way if you need to resupply as well. If you require anything, stop one of our guards. We are happy to assist you.”

“Thanks.” You tell him, as you and your companions dismount your horses. A collection of guards come to take the horses to the stables, and the guard that spoke with you returns to his post.

Reinhardt whistles “Man, and I thought Morsland liked to flaunt it's money. Maybe if we had armor like that back at Morsland, those demons would have felt underdressed and went back home to change.”

“There is nothing wrong with looking presentable, Reinhardt. Though I'll admit, I always thought the plumes were a bit much.” Daniel admits.

“Well wouldn't you have worn armor like that if you had the chance back at Morsland?” Roland asks.

“Void no, that visor must make it harder to see pickpockets.” Reinhardt points out. “Besides, if Morsland had the gold for armor like that, I'd rather they put that money in our pay then waste it all on that.”

“Are we gonna stand here and talk about armor all day, or are we gonna get moving? We haven't had anything good to eat for days now, and I'm starving.” Erika complains.

“Me too.” Berry replies on Joan's behalf. “Both master, and me.”

"The guard said there's plenty of stores along the way, we can stop and get some food before we get there."

"If we're stopping to eat, I know a good place to go." Roland offers. "Follow me."

You and the others follow after Roland, down the main street and passed many stores and merchant stalls. Morsland was no small city, but it was nothing compared to Tarrin. You almost lose track of everyone as you all move through the bustling city, until you arrive at a small stand on the side of the street.

"Ah, hello there!" The man at the stall greets you. "May I interest you in some fresh boar kebabs? All fresh and seasoned to perfection, I guarantee."

"We'll all have one, my treat." Roland says, pulling out his coin purse and paying the stall owner his due. The man takes the gold and puts it away, before passing out sticks of skewered meat and peppers to everyone. You give it an inquisitive look before taking a bite. It's actually pretty good, despite your suspicions.

"I've never seen these before, you called them kebabs? Are they a thing here in Galloway?"

"Nope, I never heard of them before I came to this stall a few years ago." Roland says.

"It's from the western islands, actually." The stall owner explains. "I used to live there before coming to Galloway."
>>
>>40934034
"Oh, you're not a local? I always thought you were just from the western dukedom." Roland says.

"No, I moved here ten years ago. Best decision of my life, business is great here, and the people are very kind."

Just as he says that, someone wearing a hooded cloak bumps into Reinhardt and makes him drop his kebab.

"Watch where you're going." The cloaked person says angrily as they leave.

"Yeah, clearly." Reinhardt grumbles, as he picks his kebab off the ground and continues eating it.

"Well, most of the time at least." The merchant says with a chuckle. "By the way, your crusaders are you not? What brings you to the capital?"

"Oh, uh, we're just visiting while we're on leave." You tell him

"I see. Well, enjoy your visit then, be sure to stop by my stall if you're ever feeling hungry again."

"Will do." You tell him. Well, now you and the others are fed. Should you head to the palace now, or make another stop?

You finish eating the rest of your food and clean off your hands. "Is everybody fed now?"

Joan nods, while Berry nibbles on a piece of meat Joan gave him. Erika finishes the last of her kebab and wipes her mouth. "Yeah, I'm good for now."

"Alright, then let's get going. We shouldn't keep the palace waiting."

So, everyone starts making their way for the palace. Along the way, Reinhardt walks beside you and asks you something.

"Hey, Sieg, I'm not the only one who thinks that asshole with the hood back there looked suspicious, right?"

"The one that bumped into you? Yeah, I guess it's weird that they'd have a hood on in this weather. Why, is your purse missing?"

"No, I've still got it. First thing I did after he bumped into me was check." He says, pulling out his coin purse to show you.

"Then why are you still thinking about him?"

"I dunno, hold habits die hard I guess. If I saw someone like that in Morsland, I'd stop them and ask what they're doing."

"This isn't Morsland, Reinhardt. The guards here can handle it themselves. Besides, we have our own stuff to worry about."

"Yeah, you're right I guess."

The trip to the palace proves longer than you'd think. Eventually, however, you see a large stone palace ahead of you, blocked off by a stone wall and portcullis. Guards in shining armor stop you, just as they did at the gate.

"The palace is off limits, citizens. Do you have business here?"

"Yeah, we do." You inform them. "We're from the Watchtower, my name is-"

"Siegfried Schmidt." Someone finishes for you. You turn and see a man with blonde hair and plate armor approach. On his breastplate is a sigil of a roaring lion. The guards who stopped you snap to attention when he approaches.

"These are the people your captain informed you of. They are allowed to enter the palace."

"Very well sir. Please forgive us for stopping you, you may enter." The guard says, and the portcullis begins to raise.

The newcomer walks up to you and looks you over. His eyes stop at the sword on your belt, Galadriel.

"I intended to meet you at the gates, but it seems you and your escort have arrived somewhat early. No matter, it's a pleasure to finally meet you, my name is Geoffrey Lione, of the House Lione."

"Good to meet you. My name is Siegfried, as you know, and this is my honor guard."

Geoffrey sizes up your honor guard, looking them over with piercing eyes. It reminds you a lot of how Captain Gregory would examine new recruits. It must remind Reinhardt as well, because you see him standing at attention.

"So you are all his honor guard. Might I ask your names?"

"Reinhardt, sir." He says formally.

"Joan, and I'm her familiar, Berry." The raven squawks.

"Justine."

"Erika, from the White Watchtower."

"Ganelon, of the Order of the Righteous Sword."

"Nerillian."

"Uh, I'm Roland, sir. From House Defontaine. Sir." Roland stammers out.

"I'm not a high-ranking noble, Roland, there's no need to call me sir." Geoffrey says calmly.

"Right, sorry si-er, sorry."

"Alright, and who are the rest of you?"

"They're our escorts, from the White and Red Watchtowers."

"I see. Well, now that you're here, we should go and speak with the king. He may be busy though, as we were not expecting you yet."

"Sorry, we came as quickly as we could. We're not causing you trouble by being early, are we?"

"No, not at all. Better to be early than to keep people waiting." Geoffrey says, as he leads you into the palace. "However, the king may not have finished preparations for greeting you yet."

"That's alright, we're here for a reason anyways, not to celebrate."

"Straight to the point I see. Well, the king was planning on holding a feast for you all, but I'm not sure if he's finished preparations, so there may not be one today. Assuming you pass inspection, however, there will be a celebration where the king will swear to aid the Crusade."

"The Knight-Captain at the Red Watchtower told me about that. Will that involve any public speaking on my part? Because if so, I'd like time to prepare."

"They may ask for the Champion to give a speech, yes. Make whatever preparations you want, but remember that this is assuming you pass inspection, Siegfried."

Your group turns a corner and finds itself in front of two large oak doors guarded by a squad of guards. They stand at attention, and allow you all to pass.

"This is the throne room. The king should be inside." Geoffrey explains, before pushing the double doors open.

The room is very large, with armed guards standing to the side. There is a red carpet leading up to the throne, where a man with a long white beard sits, wearing fine armor and a black cape. Next to his throne is a white hound, who looks almost as dignified as the king himself.

"Your majesty, the Champion and his guard have arrived." Geoffrey announces, giving the king a small bow.

"Already? They weren't supposed to arrive until tomorrow." The king says, standing up from his throne. "Well it's no matter. Welcome to my court, Champion. I am King Alain Langlais IV, it is a pleasure to have you here."

"I apologize, we came here as quickly as we could. It's an honor to meet you, your majesty." You tell the king, giving him a slight bow.

"The honor is mine, Champion. No need to apologize either, I'm glad you take this visit so seriously."

The king approaches your group, and his hound follows right beside him. Up close, you see that the king's face is wrinkled with age.

"Tell me, Champion, what are your thoughts on Galloway now that you've been here a while?"

"It's a fine kingdom, your majesty. Though I admit it is hard to understand what people are saying at times."

The king smiles. "I assure, it goes both ways. Now, would you be so kind as to introduce me to your honor guard?"

"Yes your majesty. This is Reinhardt, Erika, Justine, Joan, Ganelon, Nerillian, and Roland."

"Defontaine, correct?"

"Yes your majesty, how did you know?" Roland asks, surprised.

"I'm acquainted with your parents. I heard their son was named Roland, and that he went to Iseria's watchtower. You've found yourself an honorable position, child."

"Thank you, my lord."

"And who are the rest of you? Hm, let's see...Avaline, is that you?"

"Yes your majesty." Avaline says with a curtsey. "My squad at the watchtower was chosen to escort the Champion here."

"Excellent, do tell your father I said hello when you see him. Well, it's a pleasure to meet you all, I-hm?" The king stops, and steps forward towards Daniel.

"Is something wrong, your majesty?" He asks.

"No, no, it's just that I feel I've seen you before. Have we met?"

Daniel laughs. "Quite often, though you were still prince Alain at the time and I wasn't a priest then."

The king's eyes widen. "Daniel?! Is it really you?"

"I was wondering when you would notice, your majesty."
>>
>>40937986
The king abruptly turns towards his guards. "I wish to speak privately with these people, please wait outside."

"But my lord, we-"

"I will be fine, or do you think the Champion plans to stab me in the back in front of Geoffrey himself?"

Reluctantly, the guards exit the room, closing the double oak doors behind them. As soon as the doors are closed, the king turns back to Daniel and laughs.

"By the Void Daniel, I never thought you'd actually join the cloth!"

"Well, I couldn't be a duelist forever, your majesty."

"Nonsense! You could have made a great name for yourself had you stayed. And enough with the majesties, I told you a long time ago there's no need for that."

You look back and forth between the king and Daniel. Just a moment ago everything was so formal, and now they're talking as though they were old friends.

"You majesty, are you familiar with this priest?" Geoffrey asks, looking just as confused as everyone else.

"Of course I am! Back in the day, Daniel and I were as close as brothers."

"I was one of Alain's personal guards for a while, back when he was still prince. I suppose I managed to impress his father during one of the tournaments I attended here."

"Daniel, you never told us you were part of his majesty's guard!" Roland says, completely flabbergasted by this turn of events.

Daniel shrugs. "You never asked."

"Forgive me, I was so caught off guard I fear I've been very informal." The king says. "I was preparing a feast for when you arrived, but the cooks haven't quite finished it yet. If you'll give Daniel and me a moment to catch up, we'll speak more in a few hours, when the cooks have finished."

You shrug, and leave with the others so Daniel and king Alain can catch up. The guards close the door behind you, and stand in front of the doors.

"Well, that was unexpected." Geoffrey admits. "We will talk more at dinner then. There is some business I should attend to anyways. Meet us in the grand hall in three hours, the cooks should be finished by then."

With that, Geoffrey leaves to attend to whatever business he has. The others are still confused by what just transpired, especially Roland, who's absolutely shell-shocked.

Well, you have about three hours to kill now. What should you do?

While the others are busy trying to sort out what happened, you approach one of the guards and ask about where you'll all be staying.

"The Champion and his escorts will be staying in the guest wing. Follow me and I will show you to your rooms."

You get everyone's attention and follow after the guard. You were busy talking to Geoffrey when you came in, but now you're able to take a good look around. The palace is well furnished, and the halls are even harder to navigate than both the Red and White Watchtowers halls. Many servants pass by as you go, doing their best to stay out of your way. Finally, after going up two flights of stairs, the guard stops.

"This is one of the guest wings. All the rooms should be empty, so find a room and leave your stuff. Servants come to clean every morning, feel free to leave a note for them if you'd like to make a request. The palace is very large, should you ever get lost or need to find something, ask one of the guards for help. Enjoy your stay."

With that, the guard leaves and everyone starts claiming rooms. You claim the room next to Reinhardt and Roland, while Avaline actually picks a room far away from yours. Joan, of course, chooses the room right next to her.

When you open the door to your room, you're taken aback by how nice it is. The bed is large, and the pillow is very soft. There is a desk, a bathroom, and a window facing the city. There is a closet, and a lantern filled with oil. You set your gear down and settle in, then meet up with your honor guard outside.

"So, we have a few hours to kill now, should we explore the city?" You ask.

Erika shrugs. "Might as well."

"I've been here before, I could show you all around." Roland offers, now recovered for the most part. "Is there anywhere in specific you wanted to go?"

"Just give us a general tour of the area, so we know where everything is."

"Alright, follow me. It's been a while since I was last here, but everything should be the same."

----------
Your tour of the area takes a couple hours. Roland shows you all the major sites, the merchant district, the noble district, the statue of Asher (a popular meeting place), and many others.

"You said the noble district is where the nobles here live, right? Is your family here too?"

"Oh no, my family owns a manor a few miles away from here. It's just a short horse ride from here though, I'll probably be visiting them some time while we're here, if you don't mind."

"Not at all Roland, I'm not gonna stop you from visiting your family."

"I didn't think so, but I thought I should ask. Now, there's one last site to show you, it's the arena where Tarrin's tournaments are held. I think there might be a tournament here soon, actually, we might see some of the fighters there, or-"

"Wait." Reinhardt says out of the blue, coming to a sudden stop. The others look at him, confused, while you follow his eyes and see what made him stop. The person wearing a hood that bumped into Reinhardt earlier is up ahead, turning the corner to the merchant's district.

"Siegfried, did you see him?"

You nod. "Yeah, I saw him."

"He's heading for the merchant's district, isn't he? I'd bet that's a popular place for pickpockets. Maybe we should follow him."

>"Reinhardt, you're not a guard here. Let the local guard handle it."
>"You're being paranoid Reinhardt. He's probably just a traveler, heading to the merchant's district to buy supplies."
>"You wanna go tail someone, go on ahead. I'd rather not get into trouble for stalking someone though."
>"I'll admit, the hood is suspicious. Fine, let's go. The rest of you go on ahead, we'll catch up."

"Reinhardt, you're not a guard here. Let the local guard handle it."

"I know I'm not a guard here, but still."

"Just because he's wearing a cloak and hood doesn't mean he's a thief, Reinhardt."

"I'm aware of that, but something in my gut says he's hiding something. I mean come on, a heavy cloak like that in this weather?"

"You realize there's someone with us right now walking around in hot, heavy plate right?"

"'Tis not that hot." Ganelon objects.

Reinhardt sighs. "Alright, fair point. Maybe it's nothing."

"Look, if it's really bothering you, then we can let one of the guards know and they can keep an eye on him. Sound fair?"

"Alright, that's fair."

With that settled, you both inform one of the nearby guards that there was a suspicious person wearing a heavy cloak and hood heading for the merchant's district. The guard promises to keep an eye out, and you return to the rest of the group.

"And this here is our last stop." Roland announces, as you approach the arena. Morsland had it's own arena for tournaments and events, but like many things in this city, it didn't compare to the arena in front of you now. A large, stone arena, big enough to hold three arenas the size of Morsland's, with four entrances to the north, south, east, and west.

Roland leads you inside, where you see rows upon rows of stone benches. Near the top of the arena is a wooden box, likely a VIP section for nobles or the king himself. In the center of the arena, there are several lines of people in front of a long table, covered with sheets of paper.

"Looks like it's open registration." Roland says. "In that case, maybe I'll sign up for the joust."

"Roland, we're just here for the inspection. We might finish up before the tournament ends."

"Well if that happens, I'll just drop out. I'd like to give it a shot though, if you don't mind."

You shrug. "If you really want to, sure."

So, you and the others wait in line with Roland. When you reach the table, Roland signs up for the tournament's jousting competition. Apparently, this was the last day to register, and the tournament starts the day after tomorrow.

"Look, there's a melee and an archery competition as well." Roland points out. "You guys should sign up too."

"I think I'll pass." Reinhardt replies.

"Me too." Berry squawks on Joan's behalf.

"Eh, I'll give it a shot since we're here anyways." Erika says, before signing her name.

"An archery competition may be a good way to pass the time. Fine, I'll sign up as well." Nerillian says.

"I'm content to simply watch." Ganelon responds.

"It should be good for training." Justine says, before signing her name as well.

"What about you Siegfried? The inspection might take longer than you think."

Not anymore we're not. We're quite well trained by a watchtower, and even without much assistance from Gala we can hold our own against demons that make mortal men piss themselves in terror.

There isn't any point in going into this if we're going to fight dirty to win.

"Meh, why not?" You finally say, before signing up for the melee.

"Then it's settled. Come on, I think it's been close to three hours now, we should head back to the palace now." Roland says.

----------
Sure enough, dinner is ready when you arrive back at the palace. Daniel, the king, and Geoffrey are seated at a long table at the head of the room, and invite you to sit there as well when you arrive. The others from your escort are seated at the normal tables, along with some of the servants and a few guards.

"I apologize for shooing you all away earlier, I just didn't expect Daniel would be coming with you."

"It's fine your majesty we don't mind."

"Please, there's no need to be so formal. Any friend of Daniel's is a friend of mine."

"Thank you, sir."

"So, I hear you all went to explore the city while Daniel and I caught up. Did anything interesting happen?"

"Not much, though Roland talked us into registering for a tournament."

"A tournament, you say?" Geoffrey speaks up. "What category did you sign up for?"

"Well, Roland signed up for the joust, Nerillian signed up for the archery competition, and Justine, Erika, and I signed up for the melee."

"Interesting. Funny you should mention that, my sister is actually supposed to compete in this year's melee."

"Is she?" Roland asks.

"Yes, this will be her fourth time competing in the Tarrin melee. She was the victor in the last three she was in. And you said you were competing in the melee as well, Siegfried?"

"I am."

"Good, then this will be a good opportunity to see you in action then."

"Indeed, I suppose it will be." King Alain agrees. "After all, just being chosen isn't enough. A Champion must be strong if he's to lead a crusade. Speaking of your sister though, where is she?"

"She's back at the estate, training. I'll be sure to inform her that the Champion will be competing as well. While we're on the topic of missing people, where is Catherine?"

"I don't know actually. Perhaps she's asleep, I'll send a servant to go check on her, excuse me." The king stands up, and leaves through the dining hall door.

"Who's Catherine?" You ask Roland.

"Princess Catherine, King Alain's granddaughter. She's the current heir, after her father died of illness a few years ago."

A moment later, the king returns with someone at his side. A woman, with long blonde hair and a warm smile, wearing a small circlet and a fancy red dress.

"I ran into her almost as soon as I got out the door. Turns out she just slept in." The king explains, leading the girl up to the head table. "This is my granddaughter, Catherine."

"Pleased to meet you." She says, with a curtsey and a smile.

"The pleasure's ours." You tell her, giving her a slight bow.

"You know, you might have missed the feast if you hadn't woken up when you did, and on the day the Champion comes to visit."

"I'm sorry grandfather, I was just tired from my afternoon lessons."

"It's alright, just tell one of your maids to wake you up in time for dinner before you take a nap next time. Now, I believe introductions are in order. This is Daniel, my old friend. Back in the day, he used to be a very accomplished duelist. In fact..."
>>
>>40941069
The king continues his conversation with Catherine and Daniel. Meanwhile, you focus on eating. Even Gunther's cooking isn't as good as what you're eating now.

"Hey Reinhardt, pass me the salt."

...

"Reinhardt?"

"Reinhardt?"

You look up from your food. Reinhardt seems completely zoned out, looking in Catherine's direction.

"Reinhardt, snap out of it." you tell him, shaking his shoulder.

"Huh? What? Oh yeah, salt? Yeah, sure, here."

You take the salt and start shaking it onto your food. Today was your first day in the king's palace. Everything's going well so far, but now it seems Geoffrey is going to be paying close attention to you during the tournament. This could be a chance to impress him, or you could mess up and make him think you're not fit to carry Galadriel. And from what Roland said, both Geoffrey and his sister are undefeated thus far.

Guess you better start practicing.
>>
So we better roll really well.
