Hamburg, 1924.

After five years overseas, you have finally returned to the Fatherland. The war was harsh on everybody, but you are one of the last to return. You were...

a) In Entente captivity (specify which nation, and if you'd like, a specific reason)
b) Fighting in one of the various post-war conflicts (ex. Russian Civil War, Polish-Soviet War, Chinese wars, etc.)
c) Shipwrecked on a Pacific island after your merchant raider marooned on an atoll.
d) Roamed the jungles of East Africa as a guerrilla, unaware the war had ended.

As you stand about on the pier where you disembarked, with only a worn piece of luggage carrying all your possessions, a staff vehicle pulls up near the pier. A sharply dressed officer-General Staff, by the look of him-gets out of the vehicle and approaches you, before standing at attention and giving you the old Imperial salute.

"Welcome back to the Deustches Reich, Herr..."

(Give a name and roll. Highest roll wins).

Not a lot of jungle in East Africa anon.

German East Africa had a good amount of jungle.

Now this is a quest I can get behind...

>>
"...Heckmann, is it?"

"Jawohl!" Even after all this time, those ten years of Prussian drill instinctively tenses your body. Your boots, patched up with leather taken from the wear of many a dead Bolshevik, nonetheless make the familiar clack as you return the salute.

"At ease, Oberleutnant," says the man, and the back of your mind barely recognizes the fact that you appear to have jumped several ranks since the war ended. "Normally we wouldn't send out a reception like this, but we are in dire need of men with your set of expertise at the moment, and doubly so because your loyalty has personally been vouched for by General der Infanterie Ludendorff himself."

Ah, Ludendorff, the crazed lunatic that seemed to attract idiocy, gunfire, and success. Why, you remember how on the Eastern Front you had to save him by...

a) Taking your last engineering explosives and using them as a satchel charge to take out a machine gun nest that he was attempting to charge with his sword
b) Stealthily escorting him back to safe territory after he got lost 30 miles behind enemy lines
c) Personally cutting down 15 raging Cossacks gunning for him while he was idly staring at the enemy trenches with his sight scope.
d) Talking down an angry Polish mob that was attempting to lynch him after a certain incident in a Warsaw brothel.

You idly rub the scar on your arm where you has blocked that last Cossack from disemboweling you. Ah, memories...

You're jerked back to the present as you realize the officer is still speaking. "...and as you know, we may be on the verge of yet another Spartacist uprising. Which is why we need you to lead a small cadre of men to capture the leader of this particular cell."

You weren't here for the Spartacist uprising, but the scuttlebutt sounded quite bad. How thousands-or even millions-of Germans, tricked by Communist sympathizers, rose up and tried to destroy the Reich and replace some Red horror. How the army had failed to do anything about it, and instead Freikorps-essentially veteran paramilitary groups-independently went on and crushed the uprising with great loss of life. And how even now the Kommunist Partei Deutschlands plots with its Bolshevik allies to overthrow the current order.

"I'm sorry," you say as you glance down and recognize the name and pins of a colonel, "Colonel Meyer, is it? You say we need to take the leader alive? Why is that?"

Meyer sighs. "You'll receive a more thorough briefing later. For now, just understand that if we wanted her dead, we'd send in the Freikorps."

Interesting. Now you know why they specifically came to you-because you were reliable, and not a member of the-sometimes bloodthirsty-Freikorps.

"In any case, Oberleutnant, why don't you put your belongings in the rear and we will take you to the staging ground for this operation?"

You nod your head and walk over the vehicle. "Where is the staging ground, anyways?"

The colonel shrugs. "The Ruhr."
>>
Ah yes, the Ruhr. Germany's industrial heartland... and the center of a whole mess of trade unions, socialists, and wannabe communists. Also a place where they hate soldiers. Right near the Belgian border, too.

After a journey by vehicle and train, you find yourself in the city of Essen, home of Krupp Steel. The smoke makes it a bit hard to breathe, but still pales to the brutality of the East. After inhaling enough of the smog to make you a little nauseous, a man flags you down and whisks you off to the military garrison outside of the industrial zone.

In the garrison you are quickly ushered into a board room. As you enter you see about 20 men in uniform, most of them with the same grizzled look of a front-line veteran. You have a feeling that this is the briefing room, so you take a seat by the front and patiently wait for the meeting to begin.

A few minutes pass, then you hear a loud bellow from outside of the room. Footsteps seem to echo throughout the room as a person gets closer and closer, only for the door to fly open as a rotund man in the garb of a Generalmajor crashes into the room with a great big frown on his face, the angry expression on his lips only rivaled by that of the jagged mustache.

"They didn't tell me that the bloody operation was today," he grumbles. "Anyways, you lot better get going. Good luck, and remember that you serve the Reich!"

He turns to leave when an adjutant appears, blocking the door. "General von Mackensen, please, you need to give them an understanding of the mission!"

"Get out of my way, Grolman, I will not allow my honor to be impinged like this! You take care of this, while I will find that street tramp and teach him some Prussian discipline."

Grolman sighs and enters the briefing room as the general stomps out. By now, most of the other people in the room seem rather taken aback by the episode. You think you should say something...

You decide to remain silent. Let someone else stick their head in the noose.

That person is Grolman. He sketches out a map on the board behind him, much like your military instructors of old.

"Since Herr General thinks it is more important to beat up street urchins than to serve the Reich, I suppose I will deliver the briefing instead."

We have evidence that a large area of the Krupp steel mills has essentially been taken over by Spartacist sympathizers. What is greatly concerning is that in that area is a weapons cache consisting of Weltkrieg heavy weapons."

One of the general enlisted-a young boy, clearly too young to have served-raises his hand. "Why would there be a weapons cache there?"

The veteran next to him slaps his hand down. "Silly boy! Don't tell me you've forgotten Versailles!"

Versailles. The very word itself makes you sick. A place where the future of Germany was signed over to the Americans, British, and-you feel a wave of disgust-the French. Reparations, territorial cessions, all of which stung already, were made worse yet by the extremely stiff disarmament clauses. 100,000 men to defend all of Germany? Ridiculous!

To that end, many loyal German soldiers, rather than turning their weapons over to be destroyed (or given to, say, the Poles), hid their weapons. This could range from anything from "rifles kept in personal possession" to heavy equipment like artillery and machine guns. There were even rumors that one of the bulky A7V Panzerwagens was hidden away somewhere.

"Needless to say," Grolman continued, "this means that the Spartacists may have access to some very heavy weapons. But that's not the worst part."

Grolman sketches out a small compound within one of the mills.

"There is a compound here that was secretly a weapons testing facility hidden from the Entente. It is in our interest to have this retrieved at all costs. We suspect that the leader of these Spartacists knows about it."

He reaches into his bag.
>>
>>40947611
Germany really did hide weapons like this?
>>
He pulls out a picture of a young woman bearing a wicked sharp sickle.

"Sarah Luxemburg. Sister of Rosa Luxemburg, the leader of the Spartacists that we put down in 1919. And, incidentally, highly educated and formerly married to a rich old baron who is now dead."

"We need her taken into custody. Aside from the damage she has already inflicted, she may have gained information from sympathizers within the General Staff. We need to interrogate her and figure out just who this leak is, lest they leak more details to the Spartacists or even the Entente."

Grolman turns to you.

"Herr Oberleutnant Heckmann will be the head of this operation. You will be divided into two fireteams of 10 men each. We have a variety of arms for you to use, but we believe the MP18 submachinegun to be the most useful in these sorts of close-quarters areas. Try to avoid collateral damage, especially you, Oberleutnant." He winks at you. Evidently somebody had taken a look at your personnel dossier.

"With that, good luck gentlemen. Remember, we need her alive. If we wanted her dead we would have just sent in the Freikorps."

He departs, and the rest of the troops face you. You say...

a) "Well, let's head to the armory and get equipped. Speed is of the essence."
b) "Here's what I think we should do..." (write-in)
c) "So who's ready to purge more enemies of the Fatherland?"

>a) "Well, let's head to the armory and get equipped. Speed is of the essence."
>>
>>40947684
Indeed. General der Infanterie Balck testifies that at one point the Entente mission had apparently gotten intel about an arms cache of machine guns that his unit had stashed away in a mine. They dug up a specific spot in the mine, and uncovered several wooden chests that turned out to contain just bricks. This was a ploy though-the machine guns were hidden a few feet beneath the bricks.

Balck then goes on to say that there was a great hunt for who could possibly have leaked the existence of the cache. However, all they uncovered was that a guy who happened to look like the British major was having an affair.

So basically the left in Germany at that time were split between the social democrats who are for parliamentarian democracy and socialists who were for USSR type of government, with the workers / sparticusians supporting the latter?

How is Hidenburg viewed in Germany now?

>>
No need for talking down to these guys: most of them are vets, and the ones that aren't will soon be.

"To the armory boys. Form up on me and we'll move out. We'll infiltrate in at night, just like the Stosstruppen did. Once inside, kill anything that has a weapon, except the chick. You can put a bullet in her arm or leg, as long as she stays alive. Let' s move."

As one, the group stands up and heads out to the armory, with you following suit.

The armory is pretty ramshackle-mostly consisting of obsolete weapons and empty shelves, but in the back you find the more modern equipment that you are used to. Most of the men pick up the MP18s that Grolman recommended, while a few pick up Gewehr 98 rifles for longer range combat. You yourself choose...

a) The MP18. Need the firepower in the close quarters.
b) The Gewehr 98. Need the accuracy at long ranges, and a bayonet will work in hand-to-hand.

For other equipment, they are packing grenades, canned food and water, and matches. You fill your trusty engineer kit with those, and consider whether or not to take the few packets of high explosive sitting temptingly on a shelf.

a) Take the explosive. You never know when it might come in handy.
b) Don't take it. It's been sitting on a shelf for how long? It'll also slow you down.

This is an infiltration mission. Not a boom goes the factory mission. And if they have heavy weapons like tanks engineering explosives are not going to do anything.

It's generally thought these days that the Weimar Republic had intentionally crashed their own economy (and spawned the crises) because they wanted to renegotiate the reparations. Which worked.

Tanks are still super rare anon, and the ones you'll find aren't much threat to anyone.

German fag here. Nice read so far! The german is not quite right at times, but still really good
>>
After much hemming and hawing you elect to pick up the Gewehr. Most of your other men are picking up MP18s anyways, so if you need one you can always swap with one of them.

You eventually elect to bring along the high explosive. You just hope that the good Herr Krupp has a generous insurance policy.

Fully equipped, your unit heads off into the general area of the Krupp steel mills. The sound of metalwork, furnaces, and men shouting here and there creates quite a scene, although a good amount of people are already leaving for the day, it being close to night (though you can barely tell because the billowing smoke makes it dark anyways). You try to lead your team inconspicuously to the worker-held areas.

Roll for Stealth.

So German history up to WW I is:

King of Prussia became the emperor of the German empire after the Napoleonic wars.
Kaiser Frederick was a no body.
Kaiser Wilhelm I likes to shoot at civilians with grapeshot canons, but made the right decision to let Bismark do all the politiking.
Kaiser Wilhelm II fired Bismark and did his own imperialistic thing, but really badly.

You see one of the workers looking in your general direction and then running off. Damn. You motion your team to move quicker, you're not going to have a lot of time.

As you enter the foundry area you see varying workers staying a careful distance away but jeering and calling names. "You lost the war and now you come to kill your own people!" "Why couldn't you fight like this against the French?" "Reactionary scum like you will surely perish when the revolution comes!"

You and your men mostly ignore it, but one of the newer recruits starts jabbering and starts pointing his gun at a group of especially loud workers.

Then you hear a gunshot and a sickening crack as the boy's head explodes and his gear comes clattering to the ground. The rest of your men instantly drop to the ground as the rest of the crowd scatters in panic.

Do you...

a) Look for cover and try and take out the sniper. You have the firepower advantage and will definitely be able to overwhelm him.
b) Send a unit around to flank the sniper while you keep him suppressed here. That's what you and your men have likely done before.
c) Make a break for the objective. He's probably not very experienced with weapons and will have a hard time engaging a moving target-plus, you don't know how long you'll have until reinforcements arrive.

Keep the routine things routine, you think.

"Second squad! Go around and flank the bastard. We'll keep him busy over here."

"Acknowledged," says the NCO of the second squad as he motions for his troops to head off while your squad lays down suppression fire.

The sniper shoots a few more times but evidently is having a hard time aiming under fire. Eventually the other squad gets into position and you hear the muffled sound of a grenade exploding.

You've neutralized the sniper, but if the Spartacists didn't know you were here before, they certainly do now. Best to make haste.

With almost godly haste you and your teams manage to make it to the mill in question. The two workers ostensibly on guard duty are stunned by your appearance, with one reaching for his weapon and eating a burst of bullets to the face, the other running off with his hands in the air. You're not particularly concerned with him and are more interested in entering the mill.

You enter the mill and see machinery everywhere, but the place is mostly abandoned. Presumably this particular mill was constructed as a front, only occupied prior to an Entente inspection, which explains the lack of personnel here. Still, the map seemed to show that the compound was around here somewhere...

Do you:

a) Look around for someone to interrogate. They surely would know better than you.
b) Try and discern any camouflaged entrances (if you choose this option, roll a d100 for perception)

After thinking about it, you decide to split the group up into a convoluted search pattern. Half the team looks for people to interrogate, while the other half looks for any camouflaged entrances.

With luck, both teams are successful. You spot a cleverly hidden trapdoor under a piece of machinery that appears to be made out of balsa wood. You also manage to find a worker who was evidently taking a nap in one of the machines. He is extremely scared.

The man stares at the door, then back at you, then back at the door. One of your men butts him with the back of his rifle. As he approaches it, you train your gun on his back as a threat. He twists at the handle and with a sudden release the hatch is thrown open.

And he pitches forward into the hole as the unmistakable sound of a heavy machine gun blazes upward. The rest of your squad hits the deck immediately. You hear a man curse loudly.

Do you:

a) Throw a grenade. Standard procedure when clearing out enemy bunkers.

>>40951095
But throwing explosives runs the risk of killing the target. We were chosen for this job precisely because they don't want the target dead.

The best would be if we sent some of our men to have some of the workers tell if they have other exits.
>>
You motion to the rest of your men to stay put in case whoever is in there decides to take a peek around. Some of your men think this is a stupid idea but they nonetheless obey.

Your patience pays off as a man garbed as a steel worker but carrying a hand gun crawls out of the hole. He suddenly spots you and raises his weapon.

a) Get out of the way and hide behind some cover.

You didn't spend ten years in the East for nothing. The bullet shreds the man's hand and the pistol falls to the ground. The man clutches his hand and shrieks in agony, bawling like a baby on the floor. You hear some scuttling noises down in the trapdoor.

You approach the man, taking out your pistol. While your men form a perimiter around the trapdoor, you ease your pistol under his chin.

"Herr Worker, that was a bad idea. You could have been seriously hurt."

"FUCK YOU!" he cries out, but he groans as you press the pistol barrel deeper.

"I'll give you a chance to live if you tell me just what's going on down there, and why you happen to have a fucking machine gun in the middle of a fucking factory." You cock the pistol.

Roll to intimidate. Bonus points if you have a clever catchphrase.

It'd be a Luger 1908.

The man coughs up blood and tries to smile. "You piece of shit unteroffizier, it's too late. Germany's future is here. Already you can feel it. Haha!"

The man is obviously delusional. You backhand him your free hand and knock him out cold, then reach for one of the tear gas grenades on your belt. You pull the pin and toss it into the hole.

A short explosion later, you hear at least two voices screaming in pain. While it had nothing on the stuff that the Tommies used to dump on you (your mustard scars just burn thinking about them) it should nonetheless put everybody there out of action. With that, you put on your gas mask and...

a) Go into the trapdoor.
b) Send some of your men first.

You order the second squad into the door first. The SMG point men go in first, and within seconds you hear both the rapid clatter of the MP18s along with a slightly more higher pitched rapid fire that you've not heard before. Before long you hear the all clear, and you lead the other squad down the hatch.

Down at the bottom, you see two of your men dead on the floor, both of them hit multiple times in the chest. There are also two dead men dressed in workers clothes, but lying next to strange, large pistols. You grimace at the casualties taken, and contemplation that these was done even with incapacitated enemies from the gas. Workers do not fight this well-they broke in Berlin in 1919 almost instantly. Are they perhaps foreign agents?

The thought of foreign agents stirring up trouble in Germany reminds you of Ludendorff and his "stab in the back" theory. You had dismissed his idea that the German people had somehow stabbed Germany in the back-it is, after all, Ludendorff's idea-but you have to wonder if there wasn't some truth to it as well.

You shake your head. You have a mission to complete. You motion your men forward, deeper into the compound.
>>
Your troops make rapid progress. Occasionally you run into the worker here or there, but they simply cannot face the wrath of 17 of the Fatherland's finest. They either scurry off or are picked off by a rifle.

You finally arrive at a passageway with a locked metal door at the end. Presumably this is the secret research lab... and the hiding place of Sarah Luxemberg. You...

You decide to knock on the door. Your men gape a bit in confusion.

Knock, knock.

"I presume that is the reactionary officer?" A silky, feminine voice, muffled by the door, reaches your ears.

"Indeed, madam. Would you please be so kind as to open the door peacefully? I would prefer it that you came to no harm."

Fucking smooth, Wilhelm. All that practice in those Warsaw brothels meant something.

"Ahahaha," the voice laughs. "As you wish."

The door opens, and you see two things that make your head spin.

The first is probably the large, blue, spinning... thing... that is in the back of the room. Its colors seem to constantly be changing-you've never seen the like of it before in your life. It reminds you of the sea, if anything.

The other thing is the 2 metre giantess, wielding a sickle in her right hand and a pistol in her left hand, dressed in an amalgamation of what appears to be body armor and workman's fatigues. The effect is comical, or at least it would be if it weren't for the fact that the pistol was pointed straight at you.

Roll = 97

"My fraulein, I have returned for you." You put the charm up to 11 and walk up to her, quickly breaking her grip on the pistol while simultaneously wrapping her arms under yours in a tight bearhug. Smooth, confident, and already the target has been secured without a fight.

She starts giggling uncontrollably and you can't help but crack a smile.

"Oh darling, it's the future for us, darling. The future's come to save us, to save Germany, to lead the German people to glory and world peace once again!"

So she too has been hit by the infectious madness, you think.

"So, about that blue spinny thing..."

Her eyes light up. "The beacon of tomorrow! The gate from which they come!"

As if on cue, two men suddenly appear from the blue device. Your men simply have no idea what is going on, and you are also perhaps a little addled. Addled enough to not react instinctively to the belts of ammunition loaded into what is obviously some sort of heavy machine gun.

The massive burst from the machine gun catches your men off guard. At least six of them go down before they react, and those must be big bullets-even the walls of the compound don't seem to be adequate protection.

You pistol whip Sarah in the head, immediately knocking her unconscious. Whatever this blue spinny thing is, it's clearly bringing some sort of foreign enemy into Germany. And it needs to be destroyed.

But first, you have to deal with that machine gun crew that is now turning the weapon towards you.

You realize that anybody who can operate a machine gun is likely military trained, and the fact that Sarah was wearing body armor suggests that these foreign agents must be as well. You thus fire several rounds at the machine gunner to disrupt his aim while you thrust your other hand into your bag to grab a grenade, biting the pin off and tossing it in one fluid motion.

Both men clearly see the grenade coming and scatter. One man runs back into the blue device and disappears, while the other man knocks over one of the desks and uses it for cover. You duck just as the grenade explodes, which seems to cause some sort of reaction on the device. Arced lightning flows everywhere, and you feel a jolt of electricity flow through you as the blue device suddenly turns dark and catches on fire.

Do you...

Too late to ruin the party for everyone else, fortunately

You hoist Sarah up onto your shoulder in a fireman carry and order your men to exit in a calm and orderly fashion. Needless to say they make a mad dash for the exit. As you carry Sarah, she murmurs some random things. "...kill millions...already here...peace in our time..."

You have no time for this nonesense, and you have your men help move her outside of the trapdoor, shortly before slamming it shut and moving some heavy metal machinery on top of it.

Despite your fears, there is no explosion. Presumably the fires died out. Herr Krupp will be relieved, you think to yourself.

Such idle thoughts might have contributed to you letting your guard down. You can't be blamed for that. Neither can your men.

So why is it, then, when you open the door to the outside, that you are unsurprised when you see what looks like a hundred Tommies, Union Jack and all, armed to the teeth surrounding the exit from the steel mill?

TO BE CONTINUED.
