There's something very comforting about forges.
Noise, industry, heat. Metal and fire.

Or maybe it's the smell of gear, the rasp of a sharpening stone reminding you of your mother.

Or the closeness with your elements, or maybe even just the promise of hard, rewarding work. Simple labour is far and away an improvement over being a guard.

In any case, you skitter closer to the open structure, a low, heavy looking roof covering sturdy poles, wide steps leading just beneath the surface to where a rather burly looking man works. The hammer ceases for a moment as he raises his arm to wipe the sweat from his brow, grimacing before he resumes the methodical work of pounding the metal into a shape more suited for his purposes.

You stand back for now, watching and waiting for the opportunity to speak- You could likely make yourself be heard regardless of the din, but interrupting someone's work is a good way to draw ire.
And you're familiar with the craft.

Smithing, that is, not drawing ire.

A heavy gloved hand pulls what looks to be scythe blade from the anvil, quenching it in a nearby bucket, hissing steam painting the structure white for a moment.

And then he notices you, turning and raising one seared eyebrow in question.

>Petting Lann when?

When we get back anon. When we get back.

"Hello, yes. Good day."
"You too. Miss."

There's a pregnant pause as both you and the smith struggle to find words for the feeling in the air.
You find yourself trying to find space to announce your purpose, your name. And your opposite in the conversation, if his facial expression is any indicator, is struggling to express thoughts such as 'God's Blood, a giant spider!' and 'Why is there a giant spider in my forge?'.

You act first, if only to avoid the carousel of questions that involve you being an arachne.

"I am Lyra, yes?" You say, offering your hand.
He shakes it as firmly as you'd imagine, hands the size of cement blocks closing over your own.
"End. Don't ask about the name."
"Mm. I am here about the job."

He blinks slowly for a moment, frowning and continuing to shake your hand as he thinks. And then he realizes what he's doing and stops.
His eyebrows slowly knit together, then finally snap apart as he snaps his fingers.

"Ah! Yeah, the, uh. The job. At the adventurer thing?"
"The guild."
"Yeah. That's the one."
"And the job?"

He gestures back to his workspace.
"Mostly just getting a hand so I can work a bit faster. Y'got time?"
"A day, yes. I came in with the caravan."
"It'll do. Can you bring the fire up? Gonna get a bunch of work moving all at once."
"Mm."

The advantage of large buildings with open walls is immediately showcased by you ability to enter the forge, stepping around the smith as he starts to pull heavy looking bars of various alloys out to work with.

The forge itself is a simple affair, a single small door, the huge air pumps to bring up the flame. Stone and heat.
Of course, you've got a few options.
>>
>>40989592
You could stick your arm in and simply 'turn up the heat', as it were. Or you could put in the labour and work the bellows.
Not that that would be labour for you.

Maybe some magma? No, volcanoes, however small are probably no the mest idea to put into towns. What if you just offered to melt the metal yourself, and pour it into whatever mold or whatever he has?

You bend down to the entrance of the furnace, the stone only a few feet away glowing a merry red, smouldering charcoal powering the immense heat.

And then you do the first thing that comes to mind: Sticking your entire arm (Sans armour and clothing, of course. You aren't an idiot.) into the forge.

You understand, of course, on a conceptual level. You could have stoked the flames and worked the bellows for a few hours, or more likely, until you'd left the day after. It would be time consuming, and might have even brushed up against the limits of your stamina.

But then you wouldn't have been able to spend any time working metal, or learning, or anything really.

What was it? Work smarter, not harder.

Of course, the guy who had told you that had been fired inside a week for not doing his job properly, but that was years and also potentially a dimension away, so you aren't concerned about it at this point.

In any case, the end result is that you extend your arm straight into the forge, driving it beneath the layer of burning material that keeps the whole thing heated, and simply let loose with your power.

The fire answers your call- both your own, and the embers already swaying in the furnace, dancing in replying, leaping and building and swirling.
Not for the first time, you can almost hear the spirits- Simple, near mindless, but ecstatic to be of use. They gather around you, the fire whispering, the heat spreading through the room as the fire builds.

The smith stares a moment, catching your eye as he watches, arms full of metal.

He eventually shrugs, and returns to piling up ingots for use.

You stay at it until the fire is steady, the heat uniform and ready for forging.
Also, hot as hell.

You take a minute to quench your arm before you turn back to the smith.

Well, while we're busy with the smithy, I think it's time to discuss a horrible environment problem in our generation.

Peak monster.

As we've seen from this town, there are only so many giant monsters to go around. We may have to consider smaller, less exciting meal plans.
>>
>>40991884
We should totally try to sample as many local specialities as possible before some other giant monster girl comes along and eats it all!
>>
>>40991916
Damn you tragedy of the commons!
Damn yoooou!
>>
>>40991916
Based on the reactions we've received from the townsfolk so far, I think it's safe to assume that giant sentient monsters aren't really commonplace in the area.
>>
>>40991994
Okay but I'd still like to try local dishes before we move on tomorrow...
>>
>>40991994
They're just not familiar with elves. We should show them some of our customs. Maybe teach them a few words, so when the next elves pass through they won't be so awkward, yes?
>>
>>40991884

Bah! Peak monster is a myth, perpetuated by the adherents of the old human church in an attempt to dissuade monster people from properly challenging themselves and evolving! The continued existence of large numbers of giant monsters thereby allows them to continue to claim tht the world outside their walls is too dangerous for their followers to attempt to escape to!

Fight the oppressive regime of the old church! Eat ALL the giant monsters you find!
>>
>>40992011
oh, you mean actual dishes and not giant monsters.
In which case, I too would like to grab some snacks on the way out.
>>
>>40992011
I never said we shouldn't. In fact, I'd say it's an excuse to do more than take samples since they will surely have time to restock before another individual with a similar appetite rolls through town.
>>
>>40991689
>All three of those "choices" are identical. Youst get on with it.
And thus the nefarious scheme of the Spider QM comes to light: knowing that we always take all three at once, he gives us one as three.

You clear your throat to garner a bit of attention, the man dropping a small pile of ingots onto a stack nearer the forge than previous before he focuses his attention back onto you.

"Your arm okay after that?"
You glance at the offending limb, prodding it gently with your free hand. It doesn't look any worse for the wear. The skin is a bit pink-er from the heat, but your chitin is intact, and you don't appear to be burnt.

Freedom from burns is a blessing. Especially steam burns. That's just- That is never fun.

"It is fine, thank you."
"Mm. All spiders fireproof?"
"Just me, I think. I have not met many, though."
"I'll take your word for it."

He works quickly as he talk, organizing the metal by type, each kind placed in it's own pile and ordered by... something. Maybe how long they take to melt? You aren't overly familiar with the different properties of alloys and the like.

"Well- Ah, is there anything else I can do to help?"

"Well," he says slowly. "What else can you do?"

So you tell him.

"- And I can forge things with my hands, yes."
"What."
"Mikhael says it is better to forge things properly though, and that I am not doing it right and won't learn."
"Uh. Yeah."

He clears his throat.

"Well, if you can work a hammer, then there's no problem with you taking jobs. Worked on any plows or scythes?"
"No."
"Well, there's a few swords that need doing as well."
"I can do swords, yes."
"See to it, then."

"Any instructions? The kind of swords they want?"
"Swords. Just swords. Five of 'em."

>>
>>40994196

Given the 'bitch' I'll assume that it's a wolf word

'Bitch's bastard' is the illegitimate child of a female wolf (so really any illegitimate wolf)

So the word would refer to a male wolf who's a pimp and whose father/mother was illegitimate, it's probably insulting as well, maybe claiming that the illegitimate parent was born to a prostitute

So something along the lines of 'whoremaster descended from whores'?

'Alpha of omegas', but in one word?
>>
>>40994450
If that's true then we're apparently getting advice from our companions on what toy write on the swords.

Nice world-building though. Makes me wonder how a wolf can be a pimp though, how do wolves prostitute?

Alpha males have harems, they don't do prostitution but since the alpha males are the ones you'd want to kiss up to anyway...

You frown for a split second, glaring down at the metal you've been hand, inoffensive ingots somehow conjuring a not-so-faint sense of irritation.

"This- These are for the mayor's son, aren't they?"
The smith looks up again, curious.
"You've met 'em?"

Your hair flicks a bit as you shake your head.
"No, no- I was speaking with Jake, yes."
"Ah. Yeah, he's not too fond of them."
"Mhm. Is it safe to make them swords? Should I even be giving these an edge?"

He shrugs.
"More people'll lose fingers or legs or whatever to axes and trees. If a few idiots lose a limb or a lot of blood, it's none of my business."
"I am more worried about them hurting other people."
"Then they'd stand trial all the same. People don't take kindly to fools, miss. And less so in a small town."
"Ah. Well. Should I just design them myself, then?"

He waves you off as he starts in on... something. It's a glowing blob of metal at the moment.
"Have fun, then."

You start sketching sword shapes into each brick of metal, trying to organize your thoughts.

You're not going to make intentionally bad swords.
You've got a bit of pride- As a craftspider, as Mikhael's student, as someone who would rather be completely blameless when these idiots inevitably grab the blade or put it through their foot, or try to use it as an axe and just lop off their own leg or something.

And that- Really, that just leaves your ability to mock them rather limited.
>>
>>40994980

A few engravings, maybe. Something unreadable. You remember a friend struggling through some history course or another, frantically trying to cram the language before an exam. You also remember knowing far more of it than she did in the aftermath.
She failed that exam.

Nevertheless, you've got the means, the will and a way.
You consider crude insults about their origins, questions about their sexual orientation, suggestions that they proliferate amongst animals.
You settle for things less likely to cause you grief should someone figure out the language.

Lyra was here. I am stupid. I am with stupid. I welcome my spidery overlords.

Giggling while you forge is probably rather strange.

It's probably along the lines of some of the female wolves who aren't a part of the alpha male's harem (and maybe some of the really level males) group up with a wolf who's strong enough to protect them from assault/rape (kinda a nonsexual harem, maybe?), and then trade sex for food with the active hunters of the pack, each one of them giving a bit of what they get to the 'pimp'.

The 'pimp' would be in a tricky position of remaining strong enough to effectively threaten anyone who tried to fuck with (rather than simply fuck) one of their 'whores', without looking strong enough or building up too big of their own 'pack' within the alpha's to be a threat to the alpha himself. This'd probably mean a limit on the number of prostitutes that each pimp would be willing to take on.

...now that I'm thinking of it, the betas/gammas would probably be the most likely ones for this. The alpha has a harem exclusive to him, while his subordinates take on harems that remain open to the pack (so that there's less risk of the subordinate outbreeding the alpha). This'd also likely make the 'alpha of omegas' thing more insulting, as it would imply that the rather high-ranking pimp was of low-breed pedigree.
>>
>>40995151
If I knew more about wolf social mechanics then I would know how BS this would actually be.

Different Anon but Taman soaks all the bad luck there.

Oh jeez, it's hilariously inaccurate to real life.

Wolfpacks are all related - the alphas are the parents and the rest are their kids/grandkids/siblings and the occasional submissive drifter. Most of the offspring'll just leave and try to start their own packs when they feel like it, usually when they form a breeding pair (which often happens with their own siblings, but yeah).

As for the monsterperson wolfpack, I'm just speculating possibilities. Shez's pack more than likely didn't have anything like that.

Wolf packs are basically nothing more than two adult wolves in a monogamous relationship with their non-adult children.
The parents are obviously the boss of everyone else, because they're the parents.

Adult wolves leave their parent's pack and hope to meet another single wolf with whom they can start a family.

The only time wolfpacks in nature grow beyond parents and their children are when daughters don't leave for some reason, but instead stick around, mate with single wolves that the pack comes across, but who don't actually get to join the pack, and raise their "bastard" children within their parent's pack.
These packs the basically consist of the grandparents, their children and the children of the adult daughters that didn't leave.
The grandparents are still the bosses.

This whole alpha/omega bullshit stems from the fact that wolves in captivity with too high population density form violent prison gangs with violent hierarchies.
Since this was what happened in zoos people assumed it happens in nature as well.
>>
>>40995542
I think we only take the first three, though.
>>
>>40995542
Anon, the three rolls are each for one blade.
So if that roll counted would be one "literal piece of shit", one vorpal sword and one pretty good sword (from first post's 83)
>>
>>40995640
Then it's

>>40995037

doesn't look too good

Fucking spider everywhere, inside the grip, inside the blade, when your asleep they come out and repair the bl->>40995686

Well, shit.
>>
>>40995716
Wait is it the best from each or the best 3 from all of them?
>>
>>40995748
The rolls would still be 61, 45, 83, just in a different order.
>>
>>40995748
The rolls we're using are 61, 45, 83. I'll let you infer the rest since I'm bad at words.
>>
>>40995748
Okay. Whenever the roll is XD100, it means X separate tasks.
First THREE sets of Xd100 are taken.
Then the first number from each of three sets is taken, and the highest is taken for task 1.
Then the second number from each three sets.
Then the third.
Then the fourth, fifth, so on.

Clear?

I think the veterans knew this, just had a bit of a brainfart is all.

Well-
You haven't got any special ideas for swords.
And you're fairly certain they wouldn't have any idea what to do with them, anyway.

So the swords themselves are a simple design. Pommel. Grip. Crossguard. Blade.
You work a bit of fanciness into them. Nothing spectacular, but there's a few twisting eight-legged guards, an intricate pommel with a web design. You even make the metal pattern itself for you.

And then you set in on engraving.

Traceries over each blade, across each guard. Beautiful, spreading patterns. Hidden spiders.
And a few simple, to the point engravings-

That, even if they could read, you feel confident that they would be entirely ignorant of the message.

You haven't met them, and maybe you're being uncharitable.
But if they aren't willing to put in work to learn the blade, then you believe it's a fair assumption to make that they won't be the sort of people who ever achieve anything with it.

Which is why your blades are decorated with such messages as:

HANDS BELOW THE GUARD.
POINTY ENDS AWAY FROM SELF.

And other inspiring messages.

You're rather proud of them, to be honest.

You clean up the finished pieces, leaving them with the grateful smith, heading out into the village- The setting sun is easy on your eyes at least, a day in a smoky firelit cabin leaving you adjusted to a bit of a lower light level.

You stretch lazily, skittering away into the town. You've got time, if nothing else.

>Locate food. The kind you don't have to kill.
>Return to the caravan. Laze. Laze hard.
>Locate food. The kind that runs.

I must be horribly out of the loop, I thought swordplay was for fighting people and monsters, not falling trees. Does she also plan to make them parry a helicopter and fence with a river?

never hurts to restock the caravan's food supplies. Plus they never have anything we like. Is it really so hard to get some bear meat every now and then?

I think non-running food takes it?
Stop causing ties.

Writing!
>>
>>40996974
Clearly causing ties wins it, and we should go tie up some running food and then find food we don't have to kill.
>>
>>40996974
It was a tie within the 10 minutes, the next one was running food. If it matters.

I doubt Lyra knows about half-swording so her first reaction to an elite "Knight of the King's Guard"-type Knight doing so would be >Are you fucking serious? Or are you just stupid? What is this shit?
>>
You wander through the quiet town, the residents no doubt indoors, enjoying meals with their families, thinking on the morrow already.
Or hiding from a giant spider.

No loss, really.

You follow your nose.
In the most literal sense.

The lingering smell of roasting meat- and something else besides- wafts through the streets, drawing you onwards. To victory, and also dinner. The second is the important one.

There's a tavern at the end of your travels. The door falls open as people leave, staggering away down the street, drunk before the night has even fallen.

You've got better things to concern yourself with. Like whether or not they've got enough food to feed you, and if you'll be able to fit through the doors. It's built with a pair of swinging doors, so you're hoping your luck holds long enough to get you inside.

You're quite satisfied when you emerge into the tavern with only minimal scraping at the doors.

You're less pleased with the utter silence that descends on the building with your presence, but there is room for you at a table. And the waitress, or owner, or whoever she is is there in a minute, taking your order with a warm smile.

And then you're hit with the second pleasant surprise of the night:

They do have enough food to feed you.
>>

Annnnd I'll close it here for the night!

As per usual: Comments, questions and concerns answered in thread!

hoo hah, thread monday.

As for questions, I didn't have any prepared today. Did our friends have a day-on-the-town like we did?

Thanks for the run REQM!
Question: Does Lyra have an aunt by the name of Neru? *Totally not rereading Re:Human Quest*
>>

But it's all the food they have.

Vaguely.
They accompanied Lyra to the guild, by the technicality of being asleep behind her.
But she didn't bring them into the forge. Not everyone is fireproof, after all.

>>40997734
I haven't had time to read it yet, to be honest.

>>40997766
Probably you, as you'll be leaving with the caravan come morning!
Haha!
>>
>>40997875
>But she didn't bring them into the forge. Not everyone is fireproof, after all.
What'd Lyra do with them? Just pile them outside the door?
>>
>>40997897
she hung them up on the hatrack.
>>
>>40997897
Prodded them mostly awake and sent them off.

Jin found the highest point in town and sat there, creeping people out for hours.

Sheszka took Ezzy, laid down in the street, and moved with the sun.

Nin sat with Jin and chatted for a bit, helped out with the caravan, then stood outside the forge til Lyra finished, so she could be the first.

I think these little progress reports would be a wonderful addition to the end of threads. It encourages you to think about what the side characters have been doing.
>>
>>40999486
Agreed.

>Sheszka took Ezzy, laid down in the street, and moved with the sun.
I'm just imagining Shesz dead asleep, but pushing her foot in her sleep, scooching inch by inch as she follows the sun.
