There is bickering and arguing in the distance from the small house, which is hidden inside the vast expanse of garden.
The muscle-bound man leans back on his porch chair, listening to the conversation with almost superhuman hearing, unknown to his friend or her children.

He feels bad about eavesdropping, but he is curious how his friend is coming along. Izumi has never been the kind of woman to share how she's feeling or how her life is holding up. He learned about Izumi's child through the gossip of his own children after-school.

A woman emerges from the house, and immediately pulls on his ear.
"You're listening in on them, aren't you?" The green-haired woman pouts.
"Honeeyy, Please. You know me better than that."

She gives him the evil eye, as he stands up and adjusts his voice.
"I was just concerned, is all. I haven't heard from Izumi in a while, and then she shows up with a daughter that's almost Maeda's age." He sighs.

The green-haired woman balls her fists.
"What were they talking about?"
He leans against the wall, "Remember when we told her not to get involved with Fortune?"
"I do."

"Well." He looks guilty. "I wish we had been there for her when she decided to. Like a good friend would have been."

I am Itsukuma Masami.
It's time to rescue Aiko from her mother.
That's right! We have everyone together who is going with us to rescue Aiko. She's been taken away to a remote mountain shrine in the middle of no-where by her crazy mother. We don't intend to fight her mother, but at the very least we may be able to convince her not to involve her daughter in her own personal war against Asai. Who is the man I begrudgingly call 'Dad'.

So far it's Mom, Julie, Haruko, and Maeda and Ryouta's parents.

Maeda thinks she should stay here. Ryouta wants to go anyway.

It's less that I don't care and more that I don't know. They should both stay and be safe, but for diplomacy it might be better to have them.

Maeda could probably get through to Aiko a bit better.

No one else has voted and this seems like a big deal.

I don't know if I should be responsible for this.

I talked it over with them, trying to decide what would be the best thing to do.
"I don't care what you think, Ryouta. I think we're going to get into trouble if we go try to face Marie. She's way older than us and has way more experience!"
"And I'm saying." He's starting to raise his voice now. "That she's an old relic that hasn't seen any fighting in years, longer than we've been alive. We have the advantage here, Not her!"

"The point is to reason with her that this is a dumb idea!"
"My point is that I don't think reasoning is going to work!"

I pat both of their shoulders. "I think you should both stay."
"What!?"
"Oh, thank you Masami."

"Why!?"
"Ryouta, everyone who can do anything to protect this town is going. What if Asai changes his mind and starts sending monsters out instead of trying to get his building to fit through the shield?"

That's right, the Fortune HQ building, which Asai was using as a weapon, is trapped inside of a giant bubble. Marie made it to trap Asai, and it does a good job at keeping his building inside. It's just that there's no reason that monsters can't escape from it, if Asai chose to make more.

"We shouldn't be gone very long."
"That's right!" Julie, out of no where, interjects. "We're just going to go in, steal Aiko, and leave!"

I grab Julie's ear, "That's not what we're doing! We need to make Marie realize that sending her daughter a bad idea!"

Ryouta and Maeda eventually agree to their staying behind to keep an eye on Fortune.

We're standing outside of their home right now. Their father, Daichi, seems to be ready. A green-haired woman who looks young for her age stands by him.

"Hello, err-" I try to stumble out a response.
"Adele." She responds, "Just 'Adele' will do."
"Itsukuma Masami! Just 'Masami' is fine."

>Um, so what are we going to do when we're there?

"Um." I look around nervously. "What do we do when we're there?"

Adele smiles and rubs my head, "We'll just have to find out when we get there."

No! That's not the response that I was wanting!
"I-I mean!" I stumble on my words, "Do we have a plan or anything!? Have either of you seen this place before?"

"Oh I've seen it!" Adele gets defensive, "..sort of. But I've seen it before! A long time ago."
This isn't good! No one knows what we're doing!

"Hey, sweetie." Daichi chuckles, "Calm down with all this talk about 'plans' and 'rules'. Listen, I barely plan for anything when I go somewhere and it always seems to work out just fine."

How is that supposed to make me feel better!?

"We're not going there to fight her, we're just going there to make sure Aiko is okay. So don't you worry one bit, just let us handle it."
"He's right." Haruko pats my back. "You're always so worried about plans and stuff, just go with the flow!"

"I-I don't agree." Julie meekly voices her concern.
"Y-yeah, same here!" My voice is wavering.

"Please, what's the worst thing that could happen? Marie is a little misguided. But she's not a bad person!" Daichi crosses his arms.
"I-I'm not sure I would agree." Julie says.

"I don't think it's going to be that big of a problem, Masami. Think of it as making a trip to her family home." Adele smiles.
Then that smile fades, "Speaking of which, how are we going to get there? Am I driving?"

"No no." Mom corrects her, "We're teleporting."
They look at her blankly.
"Teleporting?"
"Right! I forgot I could do that for a while, but I think we can manage it this time!"

"Should I take my car or something, just in case?"
"Oh, it'll be fine. Is everyone packed?" Mom claps her hands together.

"I guess so, if we're all that's going."

"Wonderful!"

>Anything left to do before you go?

No one has a plan.

Oh my god no one has a plan and no one has any interest in getting one.
Wait.
Is that really a problem?

I mean, the adults aren't worried about this. Not one bit! I've never done anything like this before, and it seems like they have done some pretty dangerous things before.
M-maybe they're right, maybe it'll be just fine. Really!

Why am I still shaking, and whose hand is that on my shoulder.
Oh, it's Julie's hand.

"Masamiii." She groans. "I really don't like the sound of this. I don't think they know what they're doing at all!"
"No! It's fine! Really!" I try to calm her down, but it feels like I'm telling that to myself.

"But- what if-"

I interrupt her, "Welp! Let's go then if everyone is ready!"
Daichi agrees, "Okay, lead the way, little girl."

"Hold on! You didn't let me finish!" Julie tries to get my attention again. "What if-"
"SO IF NO ONE HAS ANY OBJECTIONS!" I drown her out, "We should get going before I change my mind!"

Julie goes to say something again, but Haruko grabs her.
"Excellent!" I say, noticing that Julie is now fighting against her twin instead of fighting my resolve. "Let's go!"

--

A burst of frigid air wraps around my body like a sheet. Oh, I wore the wrong clothes for this.

Now I understand why Adele was wearing a coat the whole time.
There's a fresh layer of frozen rain on the grass and the almost-overgrown pathway.
It's almost summertime, and there's still a thin layer of ice on the ground.

That's when I notice the adults stepping forward without me. I didn't see it at first, but there's a very overgrown path that lays ahead. Several of them, actually.
In front, there's a red shrine gate, covered in vines and foliage.

>Follow the adults, you don't want to split up here.

The adults forge on ahead, barely even aware that I'm trailing behind them.
I see exactly where they're going. It's to the sanctuary located a long ways behind this gate.

Though, it's hard to call it a 'sanctuary'.
It looks like the roof has collapsed in, or at the very least deteriorated to the point where it's not much of a shelter anymore.
Vines and brush have completely overtaken what used to be a very neat and orderly field.

The place is so overgrown and unkempt, it makes me wonder if the place was ever even a shrine at all. Maybe it was just a very elaborate dwelling?
It's clear that whoever was supposed to be taking care of this in all these years, really haven't been doing their job.

Uh oh! I was so busy that I wasn't paying attention to where the adults went!
In fact, I don't see them anywhere at all! They were right in front of me heading in a straight line!
I look behind the tree, behind an overgrown hedge, down the only path that's not completely blocked off. I don't see them anywhere!

I.. I thought I saw them. They were heading toward the sanctuary, right?
I look toward Haruko and Julie, but they're also engrossed by the scenery instead of watching where the adults went. You guys are so useless!

Okay, calm down, I don't see where Mom went, but I do have a phone! With no signal.

"So um." Haruko notices the adults are missing. "Where are we going?"
"You don't know? But I was following you." Julie's voice waivers.

Oh no, we really are lost!

"Hold on!" I yell, "We came here to find Aiko. We should focus on finding Aiko."
".. Is that way you stopped following the adults?"

"Exactly!" Yes, cool move Masami!
"..Then why did we wander off the path?"

No! Bad Julie! Don't point out when I'm silly!

"Okay, okay, hold on." I try to gather everyone around. "Just follow me, and everything will be fine."

"I wasn't doubting you-"
"No no! I know what I'm doing! We're going to search behind the sanctuary for a courtyard or something that they would use to train. I don't know what that would look like, but I'm sure something like that has to exist around here!"

"Uh, okay." Julie seems confused. I'm almost a little irritated that I'm not being met with a bit more confidence.

We walk around behind the sanctuary, with no sign of the adults by the way. I'm starting to worry more than a little about them mysteriously disappearing.
Maybe I should stop thinking about it for the moment. I need to find Aiko! They have their own things that I'm sure they're doing.

Behind the shrine doesn't seem to be anything. There is definitely a bunch of open space that someone could train in.
Julie and Haruko are searching around this area too.

There's something else interesting on the ground, a tiny gold pin. Huh, it's almost like a button from someone's suit. I wonder how many years it's been laying here in this barren field of brush and thorns.

"Hey Haruko, who do you think this-"

..
"Haruko?"

They wandered off, both of them. I can see Julie's leg as she rounds the corner of the Sanctuary and leaves me standing there holding a single button.

Noooo, why.
Why you two?

I pout, and then start to walk after them. The very least they could do is tell me if they're going to run away like that.

They need to learn some manners.

"Masami?"
My ears perk up, and I spin on my heel at the ready. I'm not really sure who I would find in a place like this!

I turn to find a girl with short black hair, dressed in a very worn and slightly torn shrine maiden outfit. Her skin is sunburned, and her cheeks have a redness to them.

"Masami.. You-"

"Aiko!"
She seems shocked for a second, and that red marking on her face is looking more and more like a blush.
"AIKO!" I yell once more, unsure if she can even hear me.

But just in case!
I immediately dart toward her. She puts her hands up, and shakes them around.

I'm not sure what this gesture is trying to imply, but that doesn't stop me from leaping toward her anyway.
"AIIKOO!"
"MASAMI! NO! DONT'!"

My arms meet her body, enveloping her and tugging her body closer to mine. I feel her body heat burning into my skin.
"Aiko, I-"
Wow her body is hot.
Like really hot.

Burning hot!

For some reason, I find myself split away from Aiko. My eyes are staring upward toward the sky, and my arms are still held outward. What little I can feel of them that aren't on pins and needles.
I try to say something, but only "Awaawawawwa" comes out.

"MASAMI! OH MY GOD!" Aiko rips off the top part of her dress, leaving her upper body in only a modest chest wrapping. "I totally forgot that my clothes are charmed! Can you hear me!?"

"Awaawa."
"Masami oh god, I thought I was hallucinating."

She falls to her knees and pulls me close. I slowly start to feel my arms and face again.
"Aiko, are you hurt?" I notice the painful sunburns on her neck and upper back. "You look-"

"I've missed you so much. I thought I would never get to see you again." She interrupts me. "I feel like such a terrible person."

I sit up straight, breaking from her hug.
"Why!? Why should you ever feel that way!?"
"I- I just left, and I didn't even call anyone, and-"

"Stop!" I grab her into another hug, "I made this rule for Mom and I'll make it for you. You never get to say that again, understood?"
"But-"
"No buts!" I frown. "Also, you need a shirt."

I can feel Julie and Haruko behind me.

We sit in silence, my arms still interlocked with Aiko's body.
She continues mumbling something unintelligible, occasionally sobbing into my chest.

Haruko and Julie have noticed the same thing that I've been looking at, in particular the huge sunburn that exists on her neck and back.
They approach and poke at it lightly, some of Aiko's skin flakes off just from the gentle poking.

That's bad.
Haruko scoots Julie back a couple paces. Slowly, I can see a red aura start to gather at her fingertip. She presses it against Aiko's skin as the red aura slowly flows onto its surface.

Aiko squeezes tighter, and inhales sharply. The area that Haruko just touched slowly starts to pale, and then the red aura spreads to the upper part of her back.
"Thank you." Aiko mutters.

"Aiko, what was your mother doing to make you so burned like this?"
Her head snaps up, "Nothing! Nothing. I just don't go outside that often and my skin is really sensitive."

"This isn't 'really sensitive' Aiko, that sunburn could have been very serious! Don't you know about skin cancer?"
"No." Aiko seems confused, "What is it, and how do you know?"

"Uh, I don't know!"

Aiko sits up, stroking the fully-healed spot on her neck.
"Masami, I'm really happy to see you, but why did you come all the way here?"
"Because I'm worried about you! Marie took you off somewhere and she's been treating you terribly!"

"She's not treating me terribly!" Aiko retorts, "It's just been stressful and I don't want to make her disappointed, and-"
I wrap my arms around her again before she bursts back into tears.

"Aiko, you don't have to do this. You can leave."
"NO!" She pulls away from me. "No no no, Masami I'm sorry you came all the way here, but I can't leave yet. I don't want to leave Mom alone for this."

"But.."

"Listen, Aiko. This is silly. Moms are not allowed to hurt their daughters.

"It's not that it's just-"
"Where is she right now? I'm going to go straighten this whole thing up, she doesn't get to do this to you!"
Her voice is cracking up again, "but I WANNA do it, I WANT to help her."

"Aiko, look at me."

She looks up at my eyes, even now her beautiful blue hue is stained with tears that streak down her reddened cheeks.
"Please don't cry, Aiko." My hand touches her face, "I promise I'll make it okay again. Everything is going to go back to how it was, I promise you."

"Masami, I don't know how that's possible."
"I'll make it possible." I ruffle her hair. "I think first we should both go talk with your Mom."

Aiko sighs, "I.. excused myself. I don't know where she is right now."

"Masami." Julie worriedly glances around.

"We can find her then, together. I don't want you to have to face her alone."

"Masami!"

"I can face her alone just fine, it's just I don't know how to talk to her."
"We'll both work that out what you want to say to her. Come on, let's go find Marie."

"So what did you want to say to me?"

Slowly, our heads turn.
"M-Marie?"
"Mom!?"

"I'm sorry, but Aiko can't play today." Marie crosses her arms. "She has something very important she's helping me with. Can you come back some other time?"

"Marie! Wait! You can't do this to Aiko!"
"And HOW DO YOU THINK I FEEL!?" Marie suddenly screams. "She is my OWN DAUGHTER, I don't like this as much as you do! But she has my blood, defeating monsters is something she has to do!"

"She doesn't have to do anything!"
"STOP IT YOU TWO! STOP!" Aiko wails.

Both Marie and I stand there, in shock at Aiko's outburst.

Haruko tries picking up Aiko's shirt, and stuns herself.
