"STOP! JUST STOP!" Aiko yells.

The two that had been arguing cease their squabble for the time being. Aiko is usually such a calm, reserved girl. The uncharacteristic outburst silence the warring parties.

Marie, Aiko's mother, wants her to live life her way. I think she just needs to leave Aiko alone and let her life like she wants.
Aiko doesn't want us to argue.

So we're at a standstill.
I am Itsukuma Masami. I've found my best friend, Aiko. Which means I've also found her mother, Marie. Aiko is in the tough position of maybe being forced by her mother to go fight my not-father Asai. The problem is that I'm certain Asai is way stronger than her.
I'm not sure what Marie's plan is supposed to be. She's invested herself in it enough to spirit Aiko away to a decrepit shrine in the middle of the mountains for 'training'. So convincing her that this is a poor idea is going to be very difficult.

"It's just as well." Marie sighs, "Break time is over, and we have important work to do. Your friend can wait here if she wants."

"Marie! Wait! What is your goal after you defeat Fortune?!"
She doesn't answer. Aiko stands up, and worriedly waits for an answer.

"Because after you beat Asai, there's only Empress, Priestess, and Magician left! Are you going to send Aiko after them, too!?"

No answer. Aiko seems extremely worried right now.

"Let's go Aiko."
"Stop." Aiko's tone of voice changes. "P-please answer that question, it really worries me."

"Aiko." Her mother addresses her coarsely. "The fact of the matter is that I'll be too old to do this soon enough. That is my only intention."

"Mom, you didn't answer the question!"

Maybe we could ask to help? Friends help each other no matter what!

If she wants Aiko learns how to fight monsters, maybe we can ask her what she's teaching her and if it can hurt Asai?

I doubt we could learn any of it since we're monsters but maybe Aiko could practice against us or something?
>>
Silly plan, take a bunch of sheets, sew em together, charm them, and drop a huge blanket on Fortune's head.
>>
>>41015094
if only we could convince her to train us instead...
>>
>>41015094
We don't have time for that, we have to figure out how to turn Asai into a person.
>>
>>41015241
I don't know if we could learn the type of stuff she's trying to teach.

We couldn't even touch her Miko outfit without getting stunned.

Marie is still silent, her eyes are locked with Aiko as both of them refuse to say anything.

My eyes start to wander. I'm trying to find any way to get out of this, anyone I can contact. Marie's attention is distracted, but only for a brief moment.
I turn my head toward the twins, Haruko is still stunned on the ground, but Julie is poking her with a stick.

Julie notices my gaze, and I nod at her. She nods back. Quickly, she steps away from Haruko and leans against the wall.
Ugh, I hate watching this, but she turns her head away from me. I can tell she just grabbed her face and stuck it into the side of the sanctuary.
Yuck, Julie. Remind me later to tell you never to do that again.

At the very least, she did it fast enough to where Marie didn't notice. Her attention turns back to me as she notices that I've moved ever so slightly out of position.

"Why aren't you answering her question, Mom!?" Aiko interrupts. "What happens when we beat fortune?"

I choose not to say anything, instead I walk over toward Aiko and put my hand on her shoulder.

Marie continues to not say anything. She instead crosses her arms.
"That is something that we'll work out after this task is done. In the meantime, your friends will have to understand that you have important work to do. Come on, Aiko."

"No! I want you to answer that question right now!"

"The answer is, Yes. If Masami, or her mother, or any of her sisters decide to act up. It'll be your job to ensure that they can never harm another person."

>"Do you hear what she's saying Aiko!? I don't even know what 'act up' even means!"

"Aiko! Are you listening to this?! I don't even know what 'act up' means!"
She is silent.

I turn to Marie, "Why do you need Aiko alone to do this!? There is already the principal, your friends, all the other kids my age! She needs to rely on her friends!"

"And I'm saying she can't rely on her friends."

Oh that makes me mad!
"Why are you trying to push all this responsibility onto Aiko!? If you want to train someone, train everybody!"
"Her friends are weak in comparison to her. They won't make the decisions she will have to make."

"Mom! Why do you want me to make those kind of decisions in the first place!? I don't want to hurt Masami!"

Suddenly, I notice something give way in Marie face.
It's like something just snapped. Her calm demeanor peels back, and her teeth and fists clench together.

"You want to know why I decided to start training her now!?" Marie yells, "You want to know!?"

She points straight at me, "It's because of her, Aiko! It's because your friend!"

Aiko gasps, I frown. I already knew that would be her answer.
"Mom! Don't say that about Masami!"

"She's also the strongest monster alive today!"
That stings.

"Masami isn't a monster!"
"She is a monster, and she's way stronger than both you or I. Aiko, you have to be the strongest human. You can't let a monster be stronger than you are, whatever the cost!"

Marie lurches forward, and grabs Aiko's hand.
Damn it Julie, where are you?

"Stop! Wait!" I yell, "You don't have to do that! We can compromise! M-Maybe Aiko can live at home, and I'll teleport her here for training sessions!"

"Great. You already learned how to teleport." She mutters. "No deal, Masami. You don't get to have a say in my daughters training. She is going to be stronger than you, and I won't let you sabotage it!"

"That's it!" I yell, "This is now officially stupid! That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard!"

"You're just a kid now, Masami. But someday you may not be a kid, and you may be much less friendly toward my daughter. So stay out of this."

"No! Aiko has her whole life to get strong, she doesn't even have to get strong now! Why are you sacrificing her life for it!? You're going to burn her out if you strain her too hard!"
"Don't tell me how to raise my own daughter!"

Julie, Julie come on. Please Julie. Please get the adults over here!

"I'm already sick of listening to you try to give me a speech about morals and about what Aiko wants. What do you know about Aiko? You've only known her for about a year!"

"I know that she wouldn't want to be torn away from her friends to pursue her mother's twisted dream!"
My fists are clenching, I continue.
"Besides, even if Aiko got as crazy as you, I would never fight her! That is final!"

Without even thinking, I immediately rush forward and grab onto her. I wrap my arms tightly around her waist and bury my face into her back.
"I would never ever hurt any of my friends, and if you knew me you would know that!"

Mom tries pulling at Aiko's hand, maybe in a futile attempt to pry her away from me.
"Let. Go."
"No! I refuse to let Aiko go!"

Aiko squeaks as two forces pull against her in two separate directions.

"You little-" Suddenly, I notice Marie's hand glowing.

I've seen hands glow like that before! Every time I do, it's usually preceded by a very strong, and very powerful magic-enhanced punch!
Ryouta does that, Maeda does that, I saw Kaori do it once. Now, I'm about to see Marie do it, and I'm her target!

I start to pull away, but then I remember Aiko. If I let go of Aiko now, this may be the last time I ever see her again.
My teeth clench, I'm definitely not going to let that happen. I'm not letting my friend go, even if I get hurt because of it. That's what friends do, right?

Marie's hand is coming toward me now. I know that it's moving faster than my eye can see, but it still feels like time has slowed down to a crawl. All my hands can do is grip tighter, and tighter around Aiko.

SMASH.

My eyes, which I had not realized were closed, open again. The strike which I was expecting never came. My face feels a peculiar shadow fall across it as my eyes adjust to the light.
Aiko's hand, which has started to glow, is gripping onto her mother's forearm. Aiko leans against her grip, almost hugging her.
"STOP! I WON'T LET YOU HURT MY BEST FRIEND!"

Marie struggles and pulls, but for some reason cannot seem to outdo her daughter's vice grip on her arm.
Now is my chance!

Putting my back into it, I lean backwards onto Aiko's midsection. With a mighty heave, Aiko and her mother come apart. We tumble backwards onto the grass as Julie and Haruko rush to our side.
Fortunately, Julie seems to have regained her face.

"Eep!" Haruko picks up Aiko, as Julie helps me stand to my feet.

Immediately, Julie summons her sword and assumes a combat stance.
"The adults are on their way, just hold on a bit longer!" Julie, for once in a very long time, seems serious.

"Stop! There's no reason for us to fight!" I yell.
By the look on Marie's face, she seems to violently disagree.

But Julie is right, the adults are near and they'll make everything better! Right? I mean, they have a plan after all!

"Julie! Haruko! Put your weapons away!"
"But-"
"JUST DO IT!"

I shift Aiko's weight in my arms, slinging her behind me where I'm shielding her.
Which is good, I'm just in time to watch Marie's hand start to glow once more.

Quickly reaching into my pocket, I pull out Belle and feel her armor overtake me. The shock of the massive shield in hand nearly causes me to fall over. Marie notices my weakness and charges.
I slam the massive tower shield down and prepare for impact. Marie cares little about the massive hunk of infused metal and slams into it.

Even though the metal is strong, much stronger than Marie attack, it's still enough to nearly snap my tiny arm in two. The force of her magically infused punch combined with her bodyweight is too much!

My front foot remains strong, but my back foot didn't choose very strong ground to stand on. The soft patch of dirt underneath my foot gives way, and I find myself falling to the ground.

Something catches me.
"MOM!" Aiko yells, pushing as hard as she can against my back to right my balance. "STOP THIS! PLEASE! THIS IS ENOUGH! I'LL DO ANYTHING YOU ASK, JUST DON'T HURT MASAMI!"

Marie is still straining against the weight of my shield. Quickly, she draws backwards.

She stands over Aiko's still-discarded shirt. With a swift movement, she picks it up off the ground.
Then I remember, getting hit by that shirt is very bad. I wonder if the charm can go through metal?

No, I can't fight Marie! Not here!
That'll just prove everything she was talking about! What if I do fight her, and I win? Then absolutely everything she said about me being a menace to society would be true! She wouldn't be able to stop me, Aiko couldn't stop me. Who else would believe that I would behave with this power?

I have to keep stalling, the adults are on their way. They'll make it all better. They can make Marie stop being crazy. I'm sure of it.

Marie whips the shirt over her head, and tries again for us. I grab Julie and Haruko's shoulders.
"BACK! NOW!"

With a leap, I yank them out of the way just as the fabric whiffs past our faces. Aiko hops in front and catches the next attempt at whipping us with the enchanted cloth. She grapples onto it.

I grab Aiko around the waist and pull her away just before Marie can clasp onto her arm!
That's when I realize that we need to get away, right now.

Aiko's weight is much more managable with Belle on. I'm able to grab Belle and leap backwards quite a ways before landing almost on the other side of the shrine. Marie has at least twenty meters to clear before she can get to us now.

This gives me some time. I need to think about how to deal with this.

"Masami." Haruko says in a panicked voice. "It's her clothes. I felt it when she struck last time. She's storing magic energy in her clothes. That might be why Aiko's shirt stuns us when we touch it."

"What do we do about that!?"

"It means." Haruko suddenly looks very serious. "We will have to take off her clothes."

Suddenly, I feel a red burn across my cheeks. Aiko squeaks oddly.

"W-what?! I don't wanna!"
"We have to, though! Julie! You have the fast sword!"

"I don't want to take off a woman's clothes! You can go to jail for that!"
"I don't think that counts here! Masami!"

But.
I don't want to take off her clothes!

It's a shock to see that Haruko is secretly terrible lewd. I think our best bet with Marie is still hoping someone can get her out of cleanse and purge mode that she might actually listen to Aiko a bit. Depowering her via clothes removal would at least help us stall for time but I'm wary of any defensive magic that might be involved. Worth a try still.
