You are currently dozing in the way only a giant spider can.
Or maybe in the way that only you can?

You had staggered back to camp after all but emptying the larder at the local tavern, having eaten until you were well and truly satisfied. Upon arrival, and with a copious amount of yawning, you had discovered the obvious:

That you had not, in fact, set up a tent in advance.
You determined that in your rapidly tiring state tent construction was impossible. Or more effort than you were willing to put forth.
Whichever.

So you propped up a pole with one arm, hugging it your your side, and threw the sheet bit over top of you and everything else.

None of that has to do with the giant spider sleeping comment, though. That is mostly the direct result of waking to the morning sun and also the entire collection of your friends snoozing across your shell. And neck. And back.

You dimly attempt to connect dots- Jin and Sheszka are supposed to stand guard at night, aren't they?
You turn and look.

No, they are definitely sleeping there. None of your other friends turn into giant white puffballs as soon as they contact your spider half. It's like watching some sort of snow explosion. They just curl up and expand.

Your attention slips slowly back to the fact that you are, essentially, just sitting in the dirt with a sheet over your head, and you consider what to do with that knowledge.

>You're pretty much a spider ghost right now, right? You could probably sleep just a bit longer. Nobody would bother a spider ghost.
>Reminisce about dinner. Poor dinner. It was a good dinner.
>Get up, get started! A whole day is ahead of you!
>... Why are Jin and Sheszka behind you.

She still has to go to sleep somewhere unobserved to evolve though, which might be a bit complicated given that she has a night shift and sleeps on our back.

In any case, are the others even on duty while we're at the city?
Worrying about why they're here right now seems a bit silly.

You pinch the bridge of your nose, repressing a sigh.
Think on better things, better things- Ah.

You focus yourself, delving into your memories. Dinner.
Ah, dinner.

Roasted and grilled meat with a few easy spices is one thing, entire animals prepared by a chef is another. And potatoes! You missed potatoes. Butter and some sort plant, and some fresh bread, oh gods, that bread. It steamed when you tore it apart. Thank every deity that you're half fire or something, because you probably would have hurt yourself shovelling burning food into your mouth.

And the beef- Mmm. Is beef a delicacy here? Or maybe just uncommon? Maybe raising cattle too near to the forest is simply undoable. There's certainly a surplus of monsters to contend with. Steaks and ribs and-

You wipe away the drool already accumulating at your chin, slurping noisily as you swallow back your self-inflicted distress.

Maybe thinking about dinner wasn't the best plan.
But it was so damn good. And there was so much. You aren't even hungry yet!

You lace your fingers together, stopping them from clenching at imaginary animals. You've still got mystery number two to deal with- The case of the Harpy and the Wolf! Two frighteningly strong monsters, creeping in at night- Who can tell what devious plans they-
>>
>>41056455
Less narration, more reality. You push your 'tent' a little higher, turning to get a better look at them- They're both secured in their spots, twin fluff-balls gently rising and falling in time with their breaths. They should be awake, and guarding the camp. Or creeping in now, just laying down to sleep as your rise up, ready to take on the world with a new day.

Or slog along guarding a caravan and looking menacing to petty bandits and stupid animals, but that's a different matter entirely.

You're tempted to wake one up. Or both.

Maybe they're here because it's a town? Or maybe the shifts switched? Or maybe they just forgot and now you're all in trouble.
Your hand creeps slowly forwards-

>You can wake one up, right? They'll have answers.
>It is morning. Someone in camp could tell you, and you could let them sleep.

Hati, same thing but with the moon.
Geri and Freki, Odin's wolves. I think they help him find the corpses of warriors that have fallen in battle whenever the Valkyries don't do it.

You spend a few quiet moments searching for the door to your tent, before you abruptly remember that you are wearing it as a sheet, and there is no door.

On the plus side, taking it down has never been so easy.

A few minutes work is all it takes to stow the pole and tarp, leaving you free to wander the forest of tents that have sprouted at the edge of town.
You're honestly appreciative of the fact that you apparently didn't destroy any last night. Apparently the arachne version of the food coma is nearly intoxicating. Where's some coffee when you need to wake up? You'll even settle for some pop. Or soda. Or whatever it is people want to call it. It is fizzy and it contains the greatest of chemicals.

You repress a sudden giggle and wave off a few sleepy concerned caravan-ers- Ezzy, it seems, has started to snore. Which under regular circumstances would probably be all sorts of adorable, given her size- But her snoring is apparently accompanied by her tongue, which is shooting out with every breathy whistle and tickling the side of your neck.

You pet the little snake as you walk, and she falls a little further asleep, her breathing getting easier, coils tightening. She murmurs a bit as she calms down, and you keep your hand on her as you stalk between tents.

Merchants won't have the answer-
There we are.

"Kenzington!"

The leader, and your current employer, turns and waves, the other hand concealing a wide yawn that you fight not to replicate.
"G'mornin' Lass. Whatcha staggering around for?"
"Questions, yes."

He glances to the horizon, squinting, then back to you.
"The kind that don't wait for sunrise, then?"
"What kinds of questions wait for sunrise?"
"Normal folk's questions."

You snort at the implication, tossing your head and flicking your hair from your face.
"Yes, yes. My friends were not on guard duty last night?"
He eyes you slowly, hand busy winding a rope into a heavy loop, tying it off and throwing it into the back of his wagon.
>>
>>41057914

"That a question or a fact?"
"A question, yes."
"They were not on duty last night."
"Ah."

You let yourself recline a bit, the minute rush of worry escaping along with your very next breath.

"That is good, then. Why?"
"Y'couldn't ask 'em yourself?"
"They are sleeping."
"I could be."

You smirk, shaking your head as you speak.
"You are up even before I am, yes."
"I think that's an unfair accusation."
"I think it is a fact. And you have not answered my question."

"Well then, for your majesty's information, the town provided guards for the evening."
"I... see."

You feel the slightest tinge of apprehension.

That's the real reason behind the Spider Queen and the Monster Civ.

>If only there was some sort of infrastructure to support larger numbers of us.......

>>41058874
I am now considering it semi-canon that large clutches of eggs combined with high probability of adventerousness make spider children horrible to take care of.

You raise a questioning finger, words freezing on your tongue as you consider the possibilities.

"Er."
"Yeah?"
"Did they- Did they have new swords?"

He looks up from his work, to your face, bushy eyebrows meeting at the centre of his forehead.
"D'ya know something I don't, kid?"
"Maybe we should make sure that noone has been eaten by wolves. Or dropped a sword on their foot. Or fallen into a ditch and cannot get out."
"Those're kinda specific."
"Your guards are a specific sort of people, yes."

He grimaces, one large hand rising to scratch audibly at his head.
"Yeah, I assumed it was too good to be true, but..."
"A night off seemed safe, yes?"
"The town hasn't seen trouble in years. Just one of those safe places."
"Except for the gryphon."
"You ate the gryphon."
"It fought back!"

You argue back and forth as you head for the edge of camp.

And what you find is... not quite as bad as you'd thought, but not particularly good, either.

One of them is asleep. Just unconscious, snoring and drooling, perched over his sword, the unsheathed blade plunged into the dirt to hold him upright.

Two of them are in various states of being up a tree. Or one is up a tree and the other is trying to get him down. Or both are up and tree and-
Yes, they've fallen. The swords were sheathed though, so, small blessing and all that.

You don't know where the rest are.
Hopefully, at other stations, guarding. Potentially sleeping.

Kenzington rubs his face with one hand, a noise not unlike a bear who has discovered it has been snuck up on by a giant spider.
"I am sorry, yes."
"You're sorry?"
"This is probably my fault. Somehow."
"How d'you figure that?"
"I made the swords."
>>
>>41059226

He glances back to the struggling pair trying to find their feet, the one youth slowly tilting forwards on his sword.

"Well, they look decent."
"Thank you."
"And the tents seem to be intact."
"Yes."

"..."

"Well, I've got a lot t'take care of."
"Shouldn't we stop them from... falling on their swords? Or out of trees."
"Nah."
"It seems like the sort of situation where we should get involved, yes."
"It ain't right to interfere with the natural order of things like that. Some people are just destined to get eaten by something small and fluffy, y'know?"

You shrug.

"Ah, you'll figure it out eventually."

He kicks the sword out from beneath the sleeping youth, sending the blade spinning away before the boy slips off the hilt and onto the edges. The 'guard' in question tumbles to the ground with a cry, flopping about before he manages to rally and start to get up again.

"Anyhow, you can have first shift this morning, so grab your breakfast and all that."

Alright, maybe a bit more than that-
Overweight boy struggling back to his feet.

You glance to the fallen sword, and with a sigh, advance to his side.

Your hand on his shoulder draws his attention- his eyes swinging first around to your body, then slowly up to your face.
Where they start to widen, and he stops breathing.

"Hello, yes."
He squeaks.
"Yes, I am a spider."

He attempts nodding, but hasn't actually managed to close his mouth yet.

"In any case, I feel like it would be my fault if you lopped of your own hand a week into owning a sword, so I felt like I should offer some advice?"
You point back to the fallen blade, but his eyes don't leave yours.
"Don't sleep on a sword without sheathing it. In fact, don't carry it around naked."
He squeaks again.

"And while we're at it, try to do the old man's lessons. Without complaining, yes? And always remember- The sharp bits should hit the enemy, not you."

And with that veritable nugget of wisdom, you clatter your way back into camp.

The whole thing is coming alive with the rising sun, men and women eager to be on the road before it's high in the sky.

You make your way towards the smell of food and fire, a wonderful combination that even manages to eke a growl from your stuffed stomach.

Eating too much is a mistake.

Camp meals might be free, but they're a little small for a growing monster.

And so, much to the chef's chagrin, you show up at the breakfast line, a small mountain of monsters behind you, enjoying the wafting scent of leftover stew.

It still amazes you that it smells different nearly every day.
And that it tastes good, but you're sort of a barbarian when it comes to cooking.

The night guards behind you slowly rouse to the smell of simmering food, noses emerging from somewhere beneath the fluffy wave of their curled bodies.
Even Ezzy drools a little onto your collarbone, and you pull out a little bowl for the resident mini-snake.

Jin frees herself from her shell-cubby with a yawn, the light crack of her neck as she twists this way and that, stretching out her wings.
Sheszka follows her, uncurling and stepping to the ground, a breath of cool air accompanying her own wide-mouthed yawn.

No, you are fairly certain Sheszka wasn't nearly that tall when she went to sleep.

Spoons and soup bowls are dropped as your wolf stretches- She's taller than you, probably approaching seven feet. Her dignity is on;y barely concealed by the torn scraps of her old clothing, granting everyone sight of her now muscular form. Her fangs have grown larger, the tips of them peeking from beneath her lips as she glances around.

"Oh." She says.

The camp around you is silent.

>Good morning, Sheszka.
>Don't get comfortable, I'll be bigger soon.

Sheszkas can get very compact, when they're not oozing all over the place.

My Auntie has some sort of mastif/great dane/horse thing that is fucking huge.

Seeing it curl into a little dog bed bought for a jack russel is..... weird. That much dog shouldn't be able to fit in such a small space. Dogs can curl up into surprisingly small spaces sometimes.

Decades from now, Spider Presence attempts to embrace yet more monsters into her warm shell with headpats.

"Good morning, Sheszka."

The oversized wolf looks down at you- Down!- and then at herself. And then back to you once more.

"Yes."
"Mhm. Come here, yes?"

She steps obediently forward, bowing her head as you sling one of your larger blankets over her, each ear popping free once the blanket passes, standing proud an tall amongst her mess of hair.

You fashion her something like a dress. Or a bathrobe. Or a towel, like when you've come out of the shower but forgotten the change of clothing-

In any case, it certainly isn't clothing by any means. But it is covering her up again, which is the effect you were looking for here.

You take advantage of her posture as well- half bent over towards you, you run your hands through her hair, scratching and rubbing behind her ear- And she responds as she always does, eyes sinking closed, head butting into your hand, tail flopping heavily behind her.

You can feel the sense of relief emitted by the humans all around you, audible breaths being released, people moving and chattering and eating again in the wake of your friend and sister being labelled as safe.

Your lips twist about as you look her over, the grinning, uh, wolf-esque girl looking at you enthusiastically.
You're going to have to make her clothes yourself, aren't you?

"I am bigger now, yes?"
You nod.

And then you glance back to your shell, then to Sheszka.
"How did you even fit in there?"
"I can be smaller."
"I see."

She grins again, wider, as you reach the front of the line and the chef hands her a rather sizeable bowl of stew.

"I am a Yeti."
>>
>>41062618
shezka, just because you're big doesn't mean you're a yeti.
well, maybe it does, but still.
>>
>>41062618

> I am a Yeti.

What the actual fuck?
>>
>>41062618
And I will sadly draw it to a close here for the night-
Sorry for all the interruptions, I thought I was clear for the day and then I was very definitely not.

I should be able to run thursday, and possibly even a later saturday thread this week, so we'll pick up again soon.

As usual, comments, questions and all that, answered here!
>>
>>41062652
that was probably her evo. Yeti.
>>41062654
thanks for the run, guy. Our air conditioning powers are increasing! No room will be to hot or cold!

I... didn't realise they were related to wolves.

Same way Minotaurs are related to hobgoblins I suppose.
>>
>>41062673
she's been getting a LOT of cold element in, apparently.
Wonder what that means.
Heyyy, think this means we can make icecream? We need some waterskins, some cows, and some... honey? I guess that's the sweetener of choice at the time?

She's retained her shapeshifting, though her wolf form is now a great deal more... impressive.

My general line of thought was: Fur, Large, Snow/ice powers.

Thanks for running!

We need to get those last few levels. Surely the sword forging was worth 1-2 levels. Anything we should do that might be a pre-rec for a variant?
>>
>>41062520

Nin/Ezzy will be so confused, flattered, and strangely aroused.
>>
>>41062822
If we eat enough exotic animals/monsters we might get some weird chef variant, or a slaaneshi variant.
>>
>>41062812
Now i'm seeing her waiting till she's just put on her new clothes before realizing she has a new wolf form and immediately transforming into it.
>>
>>41062822
Thanks for playing!

You did indeed get a few levels for the forging, listed under 'Bring the Fire!'

>>41062858
You've already qualified for more than a few variants, haha!

>>41062868
Luckily enough the magic involved won't obliterate her clothing.
It definitely would have solved the nudity issue fast, though.

If we turn down the first variant presented upon evo, can we cycle back around to it by turning down all the others?
>>
>>41063097
There's enough this time that we've discussed doing a dream sequence- You'll get impressions of what they are, the name and so on, and then I'll ask for a decision.
>>
So we basically have a direwolf companion now? I wonder if she can carry her own passengers now.
>>
>>41063126
I just have to keep Sunny from doing anything interesting until I see exactly how you do that.
>>
>>41063137
She could've carried people beforehand- She was pretty big in her last form as well, and capable of adjusting her wolf size a bit.

But yes, she is now a wolfbus.

>>41063168
Give your email a quick check!
Also, easier said than done.
>>
>>41063318
Is she strong enough to carry Lyra?
>>
>>41063335
Strong enough: Yes.
But it wouldn't be comfortable for either of them.
Lyra's something of an awkward shape to sit down.
