Previously, you entered another world and things stopped making sense. Or at least they stopped clinging to your pathetic mortal ideals of sense which is really the same thing functionally.

You look around blearily, trying to avoid looking into the distance where the world recedes into a muddled painting. You are sitting on a ledge on the slope of a mountain that towers above the surrounding forest. Past the mountain you can see a truly enormous tree upon whose roots the mountains are built. From that tree’s branches sprout even more forests with mountains of their own, a fractal tree extending as far as you are willing to watch it. And behind even that is the whirl of the Dreaming beyond, flying lands adrift both above and below against shifting bands of ochre.

“I don’t understand,” you say.

The living cairne of rounded stones does its best impression of a harrumph, shaping itself into a pointing hand.
-The Dream is the mind of the Creator, spiritfather. Just like spirits. The Dreaming and the spirit host are the same thing. But most spirits do not know or do not care to know-

Right. An entire world of dormant spirits. Why not?
“So you can manipulate those sleeping spirits with dreamcrafting? Or are you manipulating the Dreaming itself?”

-There is no distinction between those two-

“Right, right. Okay. But if this is the Creator’s mind...thing then doesn’t dreamcrafting change their thoughts?”

-A strange idea. The Creator is too large for that and we are all so small. The Dreaming is the space between the Creator’s wings not the Creator itself. It is indivisible-

“The Creator has wings?”

-No-

You sigh. It’s somewhat hard to have motivation here, what can you do? You’d like to know more but you’re not sure if it any of it will mean anything to you.
“Well, those last spirits were talking about ‘Gates’ and their keepers. What are those?”

-The Gates are what they call the exits for now. The edges of the Dream-

“So they’re where the Dreaming ends?’

-More or less. The Dreaming is not in any particular shape, it denies shape to itself. But the Gates are the edges. Points where all gives way and one can access the mortal word-

You think back to the crystal cavern and the bottomless pool sitting within it. That must be the Gate that they were speaking of.
“And...there’s no way to leave without them?”

-Correct. But they are guarded quite enviously-

You blink.
“Why?”

-The Creator forbade us entry to your world long ago before my rebirth. And so the Gatekeepers do their best to control every Gate they can find and to seal them off-

You think back to the silver bubble that had been encircling the cave. Was that a binding?
“But why doesn’t the Creator just make the Gates inaccessible?”

-The Creator does not govern us. Nobody does. But the Gatekeepers have the most Domains and the most elder spirits and it is their goal to monopolize the Gates-

“But why bother?”

-They say they are the Creator’s will. But it is also true that the keepers number some of the eldest, including those who remember the world as it was and desire to tread it-

“So they just hoard the Gates for their own use?”

-Perhaps. It is also true that using the Gates one can visit things upon your world. It is a great power and guarded jealously-
“Well to be honest, all of this is really none of my business. I just want to be able to go home afterwards.”

1/?
>>
>>41061444
-You have been here a long time, that is true-

“So will that bubble let me in?”

-No. The binding is too strong-

“Really? I forced my way through it to come here you know.”

-It is to bar entry not exit.-

Bah. You sit there for a short while.
“What’s your name anyway?”

-We do not have names. But she who was here once before called me Rock-

Rock? Well that’s unimaginative. And once again it mentions another human. You’re clearly not the first to have come here. Or how else did ‘Rock’ learn so much about humanity? You look up the slope of the mountain at the small stone cottage sitting near the peak. You’ve been mostly ignoring it, thinking of it as just another oddity of an odd world. But it is distinctly human.
“So who came here before me?”

-She did-
The cairne shapes itself into a hand again, pointing up at the cottage.
-She taught us many things about mortals and magic-

Magic? Oh, that reminds you.
“Why won’t alchemy work here? What’s going on with that?”

-Alchemy? That word means nothing-

“It’s a ...form of magic I guess,” you try to explain. But you know that it’s so much more than that.

-Magic does not exist here. Magic is a thing of your world, a pearl from the Creator’s mouth. It has no place here-

What did you mean when you said I've been here a long time? It hasn't been that long has it?
>>

> Stroll up to check out the cottage
> Ask about dragons/Lost

"Hmph. What do you know about dragons?"

-I don't have anything to do with broods. And that particular one predates me by a long time-

"But you know what they were right?"

-Some of the first Lost. Traitors and scum, or so I have been told-

Yeah, probably best you didn't bring Hiss.
"You keep using that word. Lost. The others did too."

-We are not meant to be in your world anymore. Those that still remain have lost their way. They are Lost for they have forgotten the true ways-

"You don't sound that condemning though."
That's just a guess on your part, all of Rock's words 'sound' the same in your head. There's no inflection, no tone.

-Many have harsh words to say on the matter. I have no such words for anybody-

"So you're not a member of a faction or anything? These keepers you were talking about?"

-I am in no faction. Or maybe I am my own faction. It has been just myself, her and the mountain for some time-

"Speaking of which...is she still here?"

-Yes-

"I'd like to see her then. Talk to her."

-You may try-

You start to stroll up the slope to check out the cottage but stop.
"What do you mean try?"

-She has become strange as of late, even for a mortal-

"How so?"

-She doesn't like talking anymore.-
The cairne picks you up, reaching over the mountain to drop you off next to the cottage.
-She always used to have such queer things to say. And now she does not speak or even shake the air with her tongue and I have grown to miss our conversations-

You try to look through the cottage window but it is blocked off by something dark pressed against it. A curtain of some sort?

-You are human. She is human. Maybe you can speak with her. If you can tell her to come back out again then I will try to lend you aid-

You try the door handle. It's unlocked.

You suppose you shouldn't be surprised that the door's unlocked. What use would a lock have here? There's nothing here that can be stopped by locks.

You twist the handle, trying to swing the door open but the door stops after only opening a little. There's something in the way. But still this opening should be enough to sidle through, especially in this world where size and one's position in space is probably a suggestion at best. You slide through, pressing yourself against the door to get in.

It's dark in here. That's the first thing you notice. The second is the smell.

You blunder through the darkness towards the window, hitting the shin against something repeatedly before throwing the curtains open and allowing the chaotic glow of the Dreaming in.
Thus illuminated, you understand the situation immediately.

The cottage is a simple one, filled with wooden furniture, the walls adorned with needlework. Where did all of those come from?

There's a small bed in the corner and it's occupied but you don't think they'll mind the light. You don't think they've minded anything for a very long time.
The corpse hasn't decomposed. Perhaps the Dreaming lacks the process for mortal flesh. But her body (you can only assume 'her' at this point) has withered, skin drawn tight like taut brown leather stretched over a skeletal frame. There's no hair or features or anything, just a corpse that has been dead for decades.

You take another look around the cottage, noting just how much carved furniture and elaborate needlework there is. Years worth. Many years worth.
More than enough time for a girl to mature and grow and become old and die.

Shit. How are you going to get Rock's help now?

You suck in your breath, immediately regretting doing so and then step back out the door. The cairn is still sitting outside, oddly appropriate to the situation. For what is a cairn if not a traveler's grave?

You aren't going to lie to the spirit or try to trick it. It probably deserves to know and if it won't help you because of it, so be it.
"I'm afraid that, uh, she's dead."

-I see-
The pile of stones swivels on itself for a moment.
-So when will she be coming back?-

Oh dear.
"No, it's not like with you lot here. Like those Sleepers you were telling me about. She's not from here. Her body doesn't become anything else Rock, it just stops."

-But this isn't your world. We cannot die here-

"But humans can. I think humans can die anywhere. We don't have the time you do, sooner or later we all wither and die."
And it'll happen to you. This isn't a new situation to you. Will you not grow old and die while Hiss remains as young and beautiful as ever?
"There's only one part of us that lasts and that part of her is gone."

The rocks shuffle among themselves and for some time the voice of the mountain is stilled.
-I understand. I thought she no longer desired my company-

You shake your head.
"Not at all. I'm sure that she loved speaking with you. I'm sure that she never stopped. But we can only talk for so long."

-Perhaps. But I will never know-
You stand there for a few minutes, waiting for who knows what but in time the spirit speaks again.
-Is there something you are supposed to do with these shells? The things you leave behind-

You shrug.
"I can't speak for her or for what she would have wanted. But where I come from we bury them."

-Burial. Yes, that is acceptable-
There is a cracking and a groaning in the earth beneath you and you struggle to keep your footing as the ground opens up, the small stone cottage sinking into the mountainside and descending into the depths below.
1/2
>>
>>41062577

And then ground seals itself whole once more and the slope is still and silent and it as if it had never been.

"You know," you say to the empty air. "Where I come from, we also leave a marker to memorialize them so that we can remember them."

-There is no need. I do not forget and will not do so until the Dream lies still-

"Mmm."
You nod, not really sure on what to do or say now.
"Sorry."

-You have not done anything objectionable-

"I guess I haven't. But if I hadn't come along you could have gone on believing a little bit longer."

-Believing what? That she didn't wish to speak to me? There is no wrong visited against me, truth is no crime. And in return...-

The cairn reaches into the air, pebbly fingers framing the silver bubble floating up in the distance as if trying to grab it. But doing so scorches it, rocks cracking and blackening.
-I will grant you the assistance you desire-

Rock lets go of the bubble, having apparently given up on trying to craft it down. Burning and cracked stones litter the earth around you. You stare up at the Gate, the silver binding around it still strong.
-This might become troublesome-

"Uhuh. Well, I'll leave you to it. But just to say, would you want to come with me?"
The rocks are silent so you continue to talk.
"I don't know if you'd want to be Lost or whatever but I could use the help and uh..."

You let yourself trail off. When you put it that way it sounds selfish.

-Do you think that she is in your world?-

"No?"

-I remember speaking with her about the beliefs you humans have. She told me that some of you think that souls come and go, rebirthing themselves as we do in new bodies-

You frown.
"I've heard OF that but I don't think it's tr-"

The ground beneath you starts to rumble and shake, the entire mountain quaking.
"Ah! What's going on!?"

-I am not strong enough to trespass upon that seal-

"Oh. Well in that case, what's all this about then?"

-But the mountain is-

You cling to a boulder as the mountain suddenly rises, growing upwards like a twisting and turning spire. Wind rushes past as it continues to grow, elevating itself by hundreds of feet every second.

"Why?" you shout over the storm. "Why didn't you just do this instead then?"

-This mountain is my Domain, the roots and bounds of my power. I would not like to crack it unless I had to-

The liquid mountain screams through the air, with you hanging on for dear life just below the peak. The air itself reacts as it goes past, Motes and Sleepers briefly waking as the atmosphere changes into flocks of birds, squid and miscellany that last just long enough to flee to safety before dispersing.
And then the tip of the mountain strikes the surface of the bubble and the mountain bursts with a thunderclap and you are thrown free back into the air and into freefall.

1/2
>>
>>41063210

You can't see, you can't see. The searing heat and light has imprinted itself over your vision. You can only see those same moments replayed over and over again, the peak striking the seal and buckling before it.
You can't see where you are falling but something catches you anyway, plucking you out of the air.

A wave of sudden heat buffets past you, an unleashed tempest howling above. But the thing holding you doesn't shake and it lies you down onto something cool and solid.

You blink and blink, doing your best to banish the blight from your eyes and in doing so your vision slowly restores itself.
You are lying in the lip of the crystal cave once more, the pool not far from here. The bubble over the entrance is gone.

Beside you is a small rock, one roughly the size of your fist. It is blackened and smoking and as you watch something in it breaks and it splits in half.
And out of it crawls a living pebble, something with wavy legs and splintered hide. It sits on your hand.
-That was harder than anticipated-
It sounds the same as ever.

"What happened?"

-I accidentally woke the seal up and it stopped Sleeping. There was a contest of wills-

You peer about, looking for other rocks.
"Where's the rest of you?"

-Dispersed. I was blinded by hubris. The Gatekeepers are much stronger than I-

You climb to your feet and walk through the cave, now noting the rainbow crystal to be dimmed and cracked. The pool is still there in the middle of it all, showing not even a ripple as a reaction.
"What do I do, do I just jump in."

-Perhaps-

You shrug and do so, letting the warm waters close over your head. For a moment you are sinking endlessly, adrift in a bottomless pit. You are trapped, there is no way out, you are doomed.
And then you sink through the bottom and keep going, falling from the light and back into the void where the Dreaming is but a glimmer of light. You remember this place. You've been here before, the Without between worlds.

2/3
>>
>>41063449
So maybe it's your experience with it that lets you see it this time.

Because there's something here. Something here with you.

It's vast, too big to see. The silhouette of a silhouette. Something far off against the backdrop of Without. Or maybe it IS the backdrop? Something of which the light of the Dreaming is merely the gleam in an impossibly huge eye.

And then you are back in the desert. A snake bites you.
Light wraps itself around you, the entire world accreting around your body in a single blink of an eye.

You wake up feeling like shit. And you are alone.

You aren't in the wagon anymore. You're lying on a strange bed, a length of tight fabric stretched over a low wooden frame. The room you are in is carved from orange stone and there are no windows. The only light comes from a strange torch attached to the wall next to the door, a heatless lamp burning without fire.

You have no idea what any of this at all. Your pack isn't here.

You sit up and unclench your hands. You'd been holding them rather tight, tight enough to leave fingernail marks on your palms. And clutched within one of them is a charred pebble.

A pebble that quickly unfolds itself into a small spectre of dust and splintered rock, a fist-sized cloud shaped like a seven-legged beast. There's something glowing behind it, a segmented halo that shines a deep red.

-I do not understand-

"What's wrong?"

-This place is strange. Everything here is dead-

"That sounds about right. You'll have to settle for natural magic, dreamcrafting doesn't exist here. The world likes the shape it's in and you have to work pretty hard to change that."

-I will become accustomed-
The dustcloud reshapes itself, bulging strangely.
-I cannot grow-

You nod.
"You're a lot weaker here too. As far as I can tell you, you need that halo to have any energy at all."
You could almost call spirits parasites after all. No existence of their own, not truly.

Rock eventually settles on one form, a strange little dust-spider made from a miniature sandstorm. It perches on your shoulder.

With that taken care of, you get out of bed entirely and start looking for your pack.
"By the way Rock, it feels a bit rude to refer to you as 'it'. Are you male or female?"

-Neither. But you may refer to me as female if it makes you more comfortable-

"Really? I had you pegged more as a guy."

-Either is fine, there is no difference. But both of the humans I have met have been female-

You stop.
"Rock, I'm not a girl."

-Are you sure? You look very similar to her.-

"Yes I'm sure! It's not my fault that you can't tell us apart. That's something else you need to learn I guess."

You find your pack nestled in underneath your makeshift bed and you smile. Hiss must have put it there in case you woke up. She knows that it's always one of the first things you reach for.

Not very well at all. Though I do not feel at liberty to explain the details of what would happen in case you ever have to go back. Might be plot relevant.

>>41065248
>implying that I will ever write a pastebin again.

But seriously, when they(she?he?) have stuck around for a few threads and it's evident they aren't going anywhere.
>>
>>41065473
I wonder how the wishbond reacted to that.
>>
>>41064428
> Brew one for him using some of his dust and snakeskin and your skin flakes.

> Give him some treekin

Fucking PRAY! Our Hiss is jealous and kind of mean.
>>
>>41065473
> Not letting our loved one know we're back from a dangerous journey she didn't want us to go on right away.

We're kind of an ass.
>>
>>41065953
Hiss might be a little upset.

>>41065728
A little too late anon, sorry.
>>
>>41066093
Not like Cennen died or anything. For a few days. Whatever.
>>
>>41066093
How much time passed in the real world while we were in the dreaming?
>>
>>41066133
Over a week.
>>
>>41065953
It's better to learn a bit more about your situation before you do anything after waking up in strange place
>>
>>41066162
Oh shit. How long did it feel like to cennen?
>>
>>41066188
He'd swear it was barely an hour at most though he found it very hard to keep track of time.
>>
>>41066220
Any signs of his body getting fucked up?
>>
>>41066220
Did we miss another wizard confrontation?
>>
>>41066162
You'd think the book we learned it from would offer some sort of warning about that
>>
>>41066326
It did or one of the spirits said perception of time was fucked up in that place. I know we heard that before but no one seemed to give a shit at the time.
>>
>>41066326
Most uses of the Brew don't actually go to the Dreaming, it's left as a hearsay possibility and nothing more. The Journey Brew is mostly used to seek inner enlightenment and/or get high. But Cennen is already quite spirit-touched so he basically just zips right up there after a few hallucinations.

>>41066232
Nothing, I would have mentioned that hopefully.

>>41066237
I can't tell you that.
>>
>>41061468
>-You have been here a long time, that is true-

>>41066188
>>41066220

Time is wonky methinks.
>>
>>41066375
Can we expect a bunch of spirits to follow us through the gate that we went through now that the bubble is gone?
>>
>>41066375
So I'm guessing the typical high you get from the brew doesn't usually last over a week
>>
>>41066093
Well, we best be sure to present the spirit to her as a present.

> Look! We have an honest to goodness spirit willing to be your friend!

Frantically pray to Hiss that friends can be even more effective vassals if you don't call them that, or that the only price for this spirit's vassalage seems to be friendship which is pretty cheap to be able to insult the creator by having his minions willingly serve you.

I mean, having people serve you is one thing, but to have other spirits serve you puts you on the same field as the King, or the Creator himself even if it isn't to the same scale (haha) it's still a start.
>>
>>41066624
Yeah that'd be a wise assumption.

>>41066565
You already know of at least 3 that wanted to go through.

>>41066676
I'd be careful using prayer as a secret speech for Hiss if you're talking about Rock.
>>
>>41066754
Could we have destroyed the bubble ourself with spiritbane?
>>
>>41066754
Oh well. At least those three spirits don't know what a spiritbane is
>>
>>41066754
Eeep! Good point.

Man, we gon' have so much 'splaining to do!
>>
>>41066754
Wait - does this mean that Hiss can hear us talking to the Spirit right now?

Anyways, we should be sure to thank her for her infallible knowledge of her servants and having our pack ready for us as well when we talk to her.
>>
>>41067018
Nah you're talking to Rock regularly. With your mouth, as weird as that is. You can totally pray to Rock though.
>>
>>41064428
We should try put our soulsight brew too see what kind of situation we're in without revealing ourselves in the next thread
>>
>>41067197
That presence we felt between worlds was definitely the creator right?
>>
>>41067249
Now you know I can't answer that straight up. But you don't know anything else that's supposed to live in the Without.
