"Hey, what are you going to do when you find Jack?" Cody interrupts your train of thought.
"POUND HIM INTO THE DIRT, OF COURSE." The not-at-all happy bartender bellows.

This makes you worry. It's bad enough this place is crowded, but some guy yelling at Jack will probably make everyone want to run the other direction.

You are-
Well you guess it doesn't matter who you are, does it? What matters is that you're here, and you've managed to slip into the crowd mostly unnoticed with your contact. You're looking at her now, she stands across the room with a green hood over her ears.

You cleverly followed the heroes here to do a head count on the guards and soldiers. You don't exactly trust Jack to carry out a large-scale operation on his own.
Sure enough, you came back to where he's gathering people, he's no-where to be found, and guards are slowly trickling into the crowd like a slow running tap.

You're not going to hold it against him, it's still a good idea on getting everyone out of town.

"I'm worried we're attracting the wrong kind of people." That small kid with the white hair points out. He's very clearly looking at some pockets of guards that are eagerly awaiting their turn to smash the place up.

Crap, you weren't expecting it, but that kid just said it loud enough to where the whole bar can hear him. The guards nervously start shifting, they're getting sword-happy. This could ruin everything!
That snake lady seems to be trying to pacify them with alcohol, but that isn't going to keep them at bay forever.

You reach behind you, and make sure your weapon is fastened. That weapon is

That's right, it's there. It's not really something that you're used to using, but it will do for now.
Your contact nods her head and disappears into the crowd, it looks like the party is about to get started.
Normally, you wouldn't particularly care about what royalty went off to do. You just do your job, and keep quiet about it. All that really matters to you is keeping your little sphere of influence safe. This feels different, you're not entirely sure why, but that Jack guy seems like one of the few things your kingdom has produced that has consistently been good for everyone.

You haven't had much contact with the man, and you were secretly very excited to finally be working for him. But you're not going to sit back while he possibly dies someplace because he didn't have the help he needed. He picked you to protect himself and his caravan, and that's exactly what you're going to do.

You scan the room for points of entry on where they may be slipping in. They appear to have already barricaded the front door, or at least posted someone there to keep anyone from going in or out. So that means they're coming in through an unseen entrance.

You shift your way through the crowd in an attempt to find the phantom entrance that's being used to gain entry to the building. From your guess, it's either above you on the ceiling or-
Clunk.

That was the sound of a section of wood flooring slapping against the foundation.
They're coming in from the floor. The crowd is so thick that no one is noticing them seeping in one at a time.

Now you just have to find out where, it came from the back of the-
Before you can finish that thought, two guards rip off their disguises and bring their weapons to the ready.

You wait, they don't suspect you yet, and their attentions are turned elsewhere.
Besides, there are already several people here that could bowl over the entire regiment of guards.
You keep an eye on those people now, the people who are behind the bar watching all of this unfold.

The guy with the weird hat unholsters his pistols, the kid cracks his knuckles, the girl takes out her naginata.
Yeah, you're in for a fun time.

Immediately two of the guards rush right at the girl, but they're simply swatted out of the way by her superhuman strength. You really have to wonder what their plan was.

The two in front of you take pause at what they just saw, and instead try to worm their way through the crowd. You don't see what they're going toward, except-
Odelle.
There she is, on the other side of the room. She's just as confused as you are, and she has that kid hero next to her, too. The one with the huge axe.

You turn your attention to the task at hand, finding out where they're coming in. There's even more guards in here now, they must be picking up the pace now that they realize that the heroes are onto them. More guards head in the direction of Odelle as several more seem to be forming a barrier away from the corner of the building. That must be where they're coming in at.

Yuuki leaps in front of you, slashes a guy into a puffball, and then hops away. She hops from guard to guard around the room, puffballing each one as she goes.
It's amazing to watch, but you have work to do.

>Take out the halberd, take care of the guys going after Odelle.
>That kid with the fists, he's working his way through the room, cover him for now.
>You're concerned about that buildup of guards in the corner of the room, try to lure some away from there.

You notice that there are at least four or so guards going straight for Odelle. This is a problem. Odelle is a good friend, probably one of the few friends you've had all your life.
That said, you also know full and well that Odelle can't fight her way out of a paper bag.

So the sight of armed guards rushing right at her sends a shiver up your spine.
Forget it, you decide it's time to drop the ruse.

You flip your hood back, and reach for your halberd. With a flick of your wrist, it extends and locks into place. You like your solid-shaft halberd better, but this one will do.

With the back of your halberd, you grab one of the guards by the collar and pull him in. With a whack, he turns into a puffball.
You vault over the crowd and land directly behind one of the guards running for Odelle, you smack him with the blunt end of your halberd, before reaching for the third guard with your free hand. Your hand wraps around the fabric of his sleeve as he realizes that you're there.

He turns to fight, but he's severely outmatched. You crush the toe of his foot and slam your elbow into his jaw. His armor shatters as he falls backwards onto the wooden flooring.

That just leaves one guy left, and he's pretty close to Odelle.
"ODELLE!" You yell at her, "YOUR FOUR O'CLOCK, LOOK!"

It's pointless, the noise of the room combined with the fact that you don't think Odelle knows what 'Four o'clock' means creates this sudden urgency in your stride as you struggle to catch up with her.

You push by the crowd and slowly start to approach the one guard.
Just at the last second, he grabs Odelle!

Except, something strange is happening.
"Now, Let go." You hear someone in front of him say.

He lets go of Odelle, and you get to see who gave that command. It's Madeleine!
She pours something into his outstretched hand, but the guard seems completely out of it.

"Now, Take this to that guard by the door. Don't spill a single drop. I want you to splash it in his eyes, understood?"
He obeys seemingly without question.
Eek, that's scary. You back off and focus your attention elsewhe-

WHAM
A huge Naginata nearly takes off your head!
"Wait!" You yell at Yuuki, she eyes you suspiciously for a passing moment.

"BENNET!?" She yells, "Sorry! Sorry!"
Yeah, that's you, you're Bennet.

"Watch out!" You yell back at her, arcing your halberd in such a way that it lands flat-side against a guard's head. He pitches over backwards, as two more of his friends try for you and Yuuki.

>Plow through them, you have a mission to take care of.
>Stay with Yuuki, both of you covering one another

"Yuuki, I'm going forward, take care of these-"
She slashes straight through the two idiots without a single hint of resistance.

Heroes are scary, but you're not going to tell any of them that.

You head straight for that buildup of resistance in the corner.
You realize that you're not the only one who noticed. There's that white-haired kid again.

Wow, for a kid, he sure is strong. You come up behind him, and somehow he instinctively knows you're there.
He turns and strikes at you, and you move to block.

OUCH.

That "block" was nearly the end. You can feel several places along your coat start to peel back at the strength of his almost superhuman punch. Something is definitely wrong with this kid.

He turns his attention back to the guards, as you do the same. Maybe if you knock down enough guards, he'll start to realize that you're on his side.
As the guards back off from the kid and his fists, you move forward with your halberd to finish off any guards trying to get away from him.

The kid says something under his breath, and you look over at him in horror.
He's using emblem magic. You don't know how a kid that can't be any older than Odelle is using emblem magic, but he starts to glow all the same.

His fists grow stone gauntlets across his skin, and his pace increases twofold. Within an instant, your vision is obscured by a rain of fluffballs being devastated as the kid rips through their lines.

One of the guards lifts up the floorboards once more, and jumps inside. He slams the trap door behind him as the kid nearly flattens him with his fist.

"Tch." He almost seems disappointed that he didn't get that last guard.

>We can't have them using this trap door again, Put a boulder on top of it and call it a day.
>Pry it open with your Halberd, you're going in after him.
>Have the kid punch it to pieces. Both of you are going after him.
>Wait for him to come out, whack-a-mole.

You know there's a supply line down there, and they aren't expecting company in the place that they're sending soldiers from.
You're going to find out where these soldiers are coming from.

You slam the tip of your halberd right into the crack in the flooring. With a heave, you yank it open and expose the inside.

Below is a ladder that descends into the depths. You can tell that their reinforcements must be running dry.

You're smarter than to jump down a hole idea what is down there.
That kid almost throws himself straight down the shaft the second you open it up.

You pull him up onto the floor.
"Make sure no one follows me."

He pouts at first, but accepts. You hop down the tunnel.

One of the great things about having private tutoring for emblem magic is that you get to pick your element. When you were going through school, you chose the least picked element out of all your peers.

It's a black emblem, one that controls light.

Your low-light vision kicks into play as you hit the dirt at the bottom of the shaft. To any ordinary person, they would be blind right now.

You thrive in these conditions. You rush forward through a patchwork maze of tunnels at high speeds, snuffing torches and making the inky blackness even darker as you go.

You can't swing your halberd very much in these cramped passages, but the tip at the end still functions as a very powerful spear. You hold it at the ready as you plow straight through guards who are blindly stumbling in the dark.

Each dead end you reach seems to have a ladder leading up into the building. One by one you smash the ladders and snuff out the torches.

"RETREAT, EVERYONE OUT. WE'LL GO THROUGH THE FRONT." A mighty voice roars.

That is worrisome. They could go through the front door, and you wouldn't be able to help much down here in these dank tunnels.

You don't like to admit it, because it probably says terrible things about you as a person.
But you're kind of enjoying this. It really isn't every day that you get to trap your enemy in the dark, where you have an absolute advantage over them. Most of the time you're fighting or training in broad daylight, and it really does feel like your talents are wasted if your enemy can still see you.

Not to mention that your emblem magic just flat out doesn't work in broad daylight. Then again, that's why you have the halberd.
So, you're going to take this precious time to have a little bit of fun with your opposition.

"OUT! I SAID OUT!" The same voice bellows from down the hallway. You feel a slight smile on your face.

First you start by stalking the main tunnel, you can clearly see a small group of soldiers at the edge waiting for their comrades to emerge. You think you'll have a little fun with them first.

You press up against the wall, waiting for one of the hapless sods to pass you by. Sure enough, one of the few soldiers left comes running out of the tunnels. He's long since dropped his sword and started sprinting toward the light.

Now is your chance!

Just as he's inside the sight range of the guards at the end of the tunnel, you use the end of your halberd to grab him by the collar and pull him back into the shadows.

He lands on the dirt floor, choking. You quickly smack him right in the face, and the sheer shock of the ambush puts him out cold.
To you, who had perfect vision of everything that just transpired, that looked almost comical to watch.

To the guys at the end of the tunnel? They just saw their comrade get pulled screaming into the abyss.

Without saying anything else, they scream. It's almost deafening to your sensitive dog ears. They turn tail and sprint away from the edge of the tunnel, not bothering to wait and see if their comrade comes back out.

That's another job well done, in your book.

Thanks again everyone for the thread. Sorry it went on kind of late, and sorry that it started so late as well.

But it got pretty far, this was actually a fully-fledged thread that I didn't think we would get to have.

But that's okay. I'm glad we had it. I like swapping between little-known characters that I normally don't get to explore.

Next Dog Days Thread is either Tomorrow on Tuesday or Wednesday if I find the time. I'll see you then, and thanks for participating. Let me know what you thought of it.

Good night!
