The bus ride to...wherever this farm you're supposed to investigate is, takes several hours. Several long, boring hours. Kaya has accompanied you, but even with her around, things have gotten dull fast. At least you were able to gain some information on Cultivated Humans.

According to Kaya, cultivated humans are made from normal humans who have been captured by demons, or other humans well versed in demonic craft. The captured person is subjected to horrific torture and painful use in rituals, their minds ripped away and their life essence transferred into mere plants. The twisted fragments of human life within the plants warp them into humanoid monsters, grown in darkness and without minds of their own. They're immune to fear or pain, and can be created in great numbers. They aren't particularly strong, but can overwhelm even powerful demons in great enough numbers, and, under the command of an intelligent enough leader, can be a dreadful force to be up against.

According to Kaya, however, it's rare for them to be created in the world of the living like this. Spirit World Intelligence located them easily, and believe the operation has only been running for a few weeks.

So, apparently whoever is doing this doesn't comprehend subtlety. Hopefully they're as useless in every other category, and will give you an easy mission.

Oh, my bad.

I'll just go with the write-in question. Kaya will fill us in on the other important details later.
>>
>D. "So literally no way to reverse the process I'm assuming? Are there cultivated demons too?"
>>
>>41101688
"So I'm assuming there's no way to reverse the process?" you ask.

Kaya shakes her head sadly. "I'm afraid not. By the time the cultivated humans are born, the human they came from is long since dead, and their life force has been broken into so many fragments that putting them back together would be impossible."

"Are there cultivated demons, too?" you ask.

Kaya laughs. "No, don't worry. Anyway, here we are."

The bus drops you off at a stop on a windy road in the middle of the countryside. There are plenty of farms nearby, some containing horses, or cows, or pigs, or rabbits, or bunnies, but none of them seem particularly sinister.

Kaya, however, knows which one to look for, and leads the way. The two of you walk down the street for a short while, until you find a far that appears mostly devoid of animals, save a few fat pigs feasting on slop. Other than that, you mostly see vegetables, particularly cabbages. You don't see anybody around, so you might be able to investigate safely.

Of course, they could simply be inside, and might not take kindly to you trespassing.

Heh. A farm is the location for cultivated humans. Ironic and fitting.
>>
>>41102139
Can we extend our spiritual sense to find anything that matches the description of broken souls? They probably feel irregular.
>>
>>41102169
Going up and knocking on the door is way too polite for you, and probably a waste of time. So, you decide not to do that, and instead march brazenly onto the farm, followed closely by Kaya, and take a look around.

You find nothing out of the ordinary, at least nothing evil, in any case. The pigs seem normal enough, eating slop and rolling in the mud. The cabbages and assorted vegetables might be considered disgusting by some, but are hardly evil, at least as far as you can tell.

"This can't be right," Kaya comments as you do your third lap around the farmground. "Spirit World Intelligence was positive that the Cultivated Humans are being grown here."

The two of you continue your futile search, and determine that there's nothing nefarious on this farm. At least, not outside.

>B. Sneak in through the back door
>>
>>41102527
Again, you don't feel like doing this the polite way. And, in a potentially dangerous place like this, splitting up is probably a very stupid idea. So, sticking with Kaya, you decide to try sneaking in through the back door.

The two of you creep up to the back porch, with Kaya keeping watch as you attempt to open the door, only to find it locked. Kaya nudges you aside and fishes some tools from her pocket, making quick work of the lock and letting you into the farmhouse.

You step into a small kitchen, and, after taking a look through the fridge, move down a nearby hallway, finding stairs going upwards, and stairs descending into a basement.

To be on the safe side, you and Kaya search the entirety of the ground floor, finding nothing suspicious. You also find nobody home, at least not on that floor. The next decision to make is which floor to investigate next.

You decide to go upstairs, figuring that the basement would be an easier place for you to get trapped in.

You lead the way up the stairs, turning once you reach the top, then grabbing Kaya and dropping to the floor as a bullet crashes through the wall right above you.

Looking in the direction it came from, you see a tall man in suspenders and a cowboy hat marching down the hallway, looking down at you with a wicked gleam in his eyes.

"You know, we don't like trespassers around here," he tells you in a bad southern accent, tossing his gun aside and taking off his hat. "Of course, we like flunkies from Spirit World even less."

The man stands over you, cracking his knuckles and smirking to himself. You rise to your feet, and Kaya takes a step down the stairs as you face your attacker.

You throw the first punch, catching him in the jaw and causing his head to snap back.

"This town ain't big enough for the two of us," you ay in a terrible southern accent before gasping as he punches you in the gut.

Recovering quickly, you give the man another punch to the face, then a kick between the legs before throwing an uppercut that sends him staggering backwards. A kick to his chest sends him staggering back even further, allowing you to get a short running start and jump, slamming your knee into the man's nose and knocking him flat.

You land standing over the man, who kicks your legs out from under you, causing you to fall on your own back. He gets to his knees and falls towards you, bringing his elbow down at your chest, Bringing in your legs quickly, you kick with both feet, catching him in the face and knocking back over, and possibly breaking his neck.

As you climb back to your feet, you hear a sickening crack, like that of a bone breaking. Looking back down at the man, you see white, jagged objects tearing through the skin and clothes on his shoulders, knees, and elbows. His skull seems to shrink in on itself, becoming absolutely puny and turning as white as the spikes on his body. As he pushes himself up, you can see that the spikes have spread down his back as well, and he appears to have grown a few inches taller.

"Not bad, kid," he says, still maintaining that bad accent. "But now I'm gonna make you squeal like a pig."

You suddenly don't feel very good about this fight, and so you turn and run back to the stairs, grabbing Kaya by the hand and taking off.

"Where you going, kid?" the demon behind you asks, immediately giving chase and kicking you down the stairs.

You accidentally drag Kaya down with you, and the two of you land side by side at the bottom as the creature lumbers down towards you.

"You shouldn't have come here," he says as he approaches and you get back to your feet. "Now you're gonna die."

Kaya, after getting back to her feet, takes a nervous step back as the creature continues to approach.

"You can run all you like, but I'll find you," the beast warns. "I have your scent, now. And I'll make sure you're dead before long. I say you give up now, die with some dignity instead of being hunted down like a dog."

You're not sure how much tougher this guy's gotten, but you aren't sure you can take him in a fight how he is. Your Spirit Gun could give you the edge that you need, or it could be a waste. Maybe you can outrun him? Maybe he's bluffing about tracking you?

You're feeling a bit desperate here. This creature wants to rip you apart, and you're getting the feeling that he's every bit capable of doing exactly that.

You're reluctant to use your Concentration Ring, but you fear that you might not have a choice in the matter.

The beast seems to take the fact that you aren't running or attacking as surrender, and licks his lips as if preparing to enjoy a delicious meal.

"Good choice, kid," he tells you, chuckling to himself. "You've saved yourself a lot of pain. I'll even make your death quick, just because I'm feeling generous."

As the demon steps toward you, you lift your left hand and point at its tiny little head, channeling Spirit Energy to you finger.

"SPIRIT GUN!"

Your Spirit energy explodes from your finger in a blast that consumes the head of the beast. It doesn't even have time to scream before it dies, and its headless body falls back onto the stairs as you collapse in exhaustion, Kaya rushing to your side and letting you lean on her.

You catch your breath and consider what to do next. If there are Cultivated Humans in this farm, they're probably in the basement. But, if they're up and about, you're in no condition to fight them. And, while Kaya is dangerous with her oar, you don't think she'll be able to do much against such monsters.

"What you seek is indeed below," a voice whispers to you. "But you should not go to it as you are. Such a course leads to death. You would be better off leaving this place. You killed the creator, and the creations are no threat trapped where they are."

Kaya looks at you oddly, seeming concerned. "Nobody's talking. Are you okay?"

"I am friend," the voice whispers in your mind. "For now, that is all that you need to know, though I'm sure that answer gives you more suspicion than confidence. So, allow me to offer a gesture of good faith. I will tell you the purpose behind these Cultivated Humans, and how to prevent many more of them from being used against your kind."

You feel something of a chill as he says this, and aren't entirely sure if you should trust this voice. Still, whoever it is seems to be telling the truth. At least, you feel like he is.

"The Cultivated Humans below are being made on the orders of a wealthy human criminal," it continues. "This farm is not the only one where these creatures are being made, but they all send their creations to the same place. "Where do I find this guy?" you ask. "Gimme a name and address, and I'll go smack him on the nose with a newspaper."

Kaya continues to look at you with concern, and decide that perhaps you should explain things to her soon.

"Amusing," the voice replies. "I will provided you with a name. Spirit World will be able to get you your address in short order. The criminal you must find is named Benjamin Disanto. He is quite well known in Spirit World for his actions. In the meantime, if you are concerned about these cultivated humans, I know of someone not far from your current location who can aid you in destroying them."

An image flashes before your eyes of a field close to this farm, and a red-haired woman in a red cloak.

"The choice is your own," the voice says. "Do what you will, Detective."

"What? How could you possibly know any of that?" Kaya asks skeptically.

You explain the conversation you just had with the mysterious voice, and how he showed you a vision of a woman who might be able to deal with the cultivated humans. Beyond that, you tell her the name of the man behind all of this.

"Benjamin Disanto...." Kaya repeats. "That name does sound familiar. Still, I don't like this. Hearing voices, receiving visions. I think somebody might be trying to manipulate you here."

You can't really blame her skepticism, but for some reason you feel sure that the voice was speaking the truth. You feel compelled to go to the field and see for yourself whether trust in him is misplaced or warranted.

"Kaya, please, take me to the field," you ask your assistant. "And tell Koenma who's behind this."

Kaya sighs. "Alright. I'll tell him what you told me. Don't be surprised if he has some questions for you after this, though."

Kaya helps you out of the farmhouse, and, reluctantly, sets you on her oar and takes to the sky with you, making her way to one of the nearby fields, where you see a red figure slowly floating towards you. She wears a hood that conceals her face, but you're pretty sure it's the woman you saw in your vision.

You get off the oar, and, leaning against a nervous Kaya, slowly approach the floating figure, who stops a few feet from you, remaining still and floating inches above the grass.

"So...you have come," she says in a soft voice, sounding somewhat surprised.

She reaches up and removes her hood, revealing shoulder-length red hair, dark eyes, and a neutral expression on her face. Judging from her appearance, she looks like she's somewhere in her mid to late twenties, but you suspect that she's much older. Her cloak is open, revealing a rather tight-fitting leotard beneath, which does little to hide her rather large...eyes. She also has nothing covering her legs, though she doesn't seem to be even a little bit cold.

"I am Kasai," she greets, bowing her head slightly. "Why have you come?"

You return her greeting politely, giving your own name and introducing Kaya, who looks quite frightened of Kasai.

"I was wondering if you could help me destroy some Cultivated Humans on a farm near here," you explain.

Kasai cocks an eyebrow. "Respect from a human? It's been a long time since I've encountered that."

A mischievous smirk comes to her face, and she nods. "I'll help you deal with these Cultivated Humans. Just show me where they are, and I'll handle the rest."

You climb onto Kaya's oar, and the two of you go back into the sky, with Kasai slowly floating up after you. Kaya leads the way to the farm, which Kasai looks down on with some excitement in her eyes.

"You may wish to stand back," she warns, raising her right hand.

She turns her palm upward, and flame begins to flicker in its center, soon growing and dancing around her hand before rising above it and condensing into a ball. Kasai blows on the ball of fire, which spreads into a wave and consumes both the farmhouse, and the crops surrounding it. You watch as the pigs panic from their nearby pen, luckily not caught up in the inferno.

Well.

Good quest. Felt like nothing really got done but that happens.
>>

So is Kasais a witch, sorceress, or a fox spirit?
>>
>>41106480
Demon.
>>
>>41106405

>>

>>
>>41106676
So are you trying to set up Kasai as the next party member?
>>
>>41106676
Can we bring bruce with us?
>>
>>41106962
Can you? Sure. Should you?

>>41106893
