"It's her clothes," Haruko says, panic in her voice. "Marie is using charms in her clothes, that's how she's able to keep up with us."
"W-what do we do!?" Julie asks in complete confusion.
"It means- we will have to take off her clothes."
But, I don't want to take off her clothes!

I am Itsukuma Masami, and I've finally found my best friend, Aiko. She was taken by her mother up to the mountains, and neither of us seemed to like it very much. So now I have her.

I haven't rescued her yet, that is a work in progress. Marie, Aiko's mother, is currently fighting with us, and she's no pushover.
Plus she doesn't want to do much in terms of talking. I'm not sure if she's trying to hurt us, or just get Aiko back. I'm not willing to get close enough to her to find out.

Haruko's head turns to face Julie, "You have the fast sword, you do it!"
"I don't want to take off a woman's clothes, you can go to jail for that!" Julie seems almost insulted.

Haruko sighs and turns her head over to me.
"Masami! Strip off her clothes! Just use your sword!"

>"W-why is it up to me all of a sudden!?"
>"Jail!? You can go to jail for that!?"
>"Why don't YOU strip off her clothes!?"

"Jail!?" I repeat Julie's words once more, "You can go to JAIL for that!?"
"T-This is different, Masami! It's self defense, so it doesn't count, I think!"

Julie is giving Haruko the evil eye.
"You are REALLY insistent on stripping that woman."
"No I'm not!" Haruko pouts.

"Yes you are!" Julie points an accusing finger at her. "Is there something you aren't telling us about yourself, Haruko!? We're your sisters, so you can come clean to us if you want!"

"NO!"

Marie seems sick of standing around and listening to us bicker. She picks up speed as she approaches us.
I swap over to Belle and the speed card. This isn't really meant for agility, but it will have to do this time!

I charge at Marie, and start wildly swinging the blade around. Hopefully not close enough to actually hurt her. I think my control over my weapons is good enough to not do that, thank you very much.

She rushes forward, staying just out of range of each one of my slashes. Her control over the distance away from the end of my sword is impeccable, it's clear that she's probably had someone swing swords at her in the past as part of her training.

Suddenly, her heel digs into the same exact soft patch of dirt that I nearly fell over in. She slips backwards, catches herself on her dress, and lands on her back. With her dress halfway pulled off.

Now is my chance! I move forward and-
And I hit the same patch of soft dirt. My face meets the dirt with a thud.

"MASAMI! What are you doing!?" Haruko yells.
"Are you okay!?" Thanks for at least caring, Aiko.

Marie looks up at me, I look up at Marie. We both blush at the sudden realization that we may both be idiots.

>S-stand up! I need to be defensive here!
>"Since we both look stupid, can we talk now?"

"Hey Marie."
"mm?"

"This whole clothes thing is a dumb idea."
"Yeah, maybe so."

The entire area remains silent, aside from the birds singing, and the wind blowing.
No one wants to move a single inch. Aiko doesn't want to approach her mother, Haruko doesn't want to approach me, Julie doesn't want to leave and go get help.

"Marie."
"Hmm?"

"We both look really silly right now."
"We do."

More silence.

"Can we please just talk a little, now?"
Marie thinks over the proposition. She sighs, and pulls her dress back on. She sits up and crosses her arms.
"I-I think we should."

I sigh in relief, "Thank you, that was getting a little crazy."

Everyone else cautiously approaches and sits down across from Marie. She still seems upset, but that anger is offset by the blush across her face.

Aiko is the first one to bombard her with questions.
"Mom, are you okay?"
"Yes, dear. I'm fine."

"Then why have you been acting this way? You've been getting so angry every time I told you that I wanted to go home!"
"I don't like it either, Aiko. But Asai is 'home', and I don't feel safe sending you to where Asai is."

"Then why did you leave Sis at home?!" Aiko is disturbed, now.
"I was going to go get her! I just wanted you to be ready if we had to go home and fight sometime soon."

>"Why didn't you just rely on me to fight?"
>"Why don't you trust me at all? "
>"Are you worried that I'm on Asai's side or something?"

"Mom." Aiko seems stern now, "Why didn't you ask Mr. Kurota or the Fujiko's for help? You've known them since you were a child, right?"

"I have. It's just."
For once, Marie looks sort of guilty.
"They wouldn't have approved of taking you here for training."
"Well maybe-!" Aiko interrupts in another uncharacteristic outburst. "Maybe that's because they knew I wouldn't want to go!"

Marie falls silent, as does everyone else.
In hindsight, Marie's plan isn't exactly very smart. I'm not really sure what her end-goal to all of this is. Or if she even has one.

Maybe she just wants an out at this point, a reason to go back home that doesn't hurt her pride or her family.

"So-, Um, Marie." I feel nervous trying to ask this, like any wrong thing I say might start the fighting right back up.

"Why didn't you just leave the fighting to me? I can take it!"

Marie sighs, "It's not that I don't think you can take it, it's that I don't think you can make the decisions you have to with your own kin."
"So you don't trust me."

"That's not really true, either. I think at the end of the day, the monsters are still your family. Even if you hate them now, your family will always come first, even if you know what has to be done."

"What!?" My voice almost raises a pitch, "Do you think Asai and I are on the same side?"

Marie is oddly silent, almost as if I missed her point entirely.

>You don't mean Mom and everyone else, right?!

Hold on, when she means 'my family', is she referring to-

"You don't mean," I let the words rest on my tongue for a moment, "Mom and everyone else, right!?"

She's still silent.
"THAT'S SO WRONG!" I nearly have another outburst, "Stop calling my family monsters! We. Are. Not. Monsters. We're people now! If we were monsters, would we make friends, and start a family!?"

Marie is still oddly silent, but she does seem to be avoiding eye contact.

I cross my arms, and pout.

Aiko grabs her mother by the sleeve, and leans into a hug.
She pats Aiko on the head, and-

Do I see a hint of a tear forming at her eye?
"Aiko, I'm so sorry. I didn't even want you to be friends with Masami at first." Her voice is starting to crack up.
"WHY!?"

"Because." She stops, trying to think of the right words, "I didn't realize that she would be such a caring friend."

All of us sit in silence for what feels like forever, but it's instead only a few seconds. The anger, the tension, the hatred between us seems to have completely evaporated. Even though I still don't trust Marie very well.

It has rekindled something else within me, the burning urge to get everything over with and just get back with my life.

I bolt upward.
"I can take Asai!" I proudly proclaim, "You two just stay here, we'll go pound Asai in his big stupid face right now!"

"Please don't." I hear another voice interrupt my superhero speech.

"Mom!" I feel her hand grab my shoulder and lightly shake me.
"You're not going anywhere and fighting anyone until I say so. That includes Marie." She sighs.

"Hey, Are you feeling okay?" Daichi sits down in the circle of kids surrounding Marie. "It's not like you to just up and run off."

Marie doesn't answer. Looking back, I can see that Adele has taken an interest in the sanctuary.

Nope, you're not going to jinx it.

Marie is talking with her friends, and her friends know what is best to get Marie out of her shell.
So, what is their grand plan to make Marie accept us as people?

"Psh, Marie." Daichi leans back, smiling, "You just need to get over yourself."

..
What?
"What!?" Marie seems almost insulted.
"Listen, when Izumi came to us for help all those years ago, you didn't trust her at all because you thought her plea for help was a trap, right?"

"That's really different!" Marie seems very certain in herself.
"Can't you just let go of the past? We're all grown up, we have families now." Daichi crosses his arms. "Being mad about things that happened doesn't make the future any better."

"That's exactly why I can't let go! Asai is still out there, and I don't want him putting my family in danger! I don't care if Masami or Izumi are living happy lives, their happy lives aren't going to protect my family!"
"Mom."

Marie looks down toward her daughter.
"Mom, I'm very happy that you want to protect me so badly. But this is my life, I'm capable of my own decisions now. I trust you, Mom, but I also trust Masami and her family."

She hugs her mother again, "Even if you can't trust them, I still do. And I'm not going to ever believe my trust in my best friend is misplaced."

Silence. Marie shifts uncomfortably and hugs her daughter. Daichi goes to say something, but Mom puts her hand over his mouth before he messes it up.

"Please, for my sake, please let me be friends with Masami."

That's the breaking point for Marie. She wraps her arms around Aiko and allows her eyes to express their troubles.

Julie pulls on my sleeve, trying to get my attention. I stand up and walk with her for a moment to let my legs stretch out while Marie vents her tears.

"What's up, Julie?"
"Oh, nothing. I just didn't want to sit there anymore, because I felt uncomfortable."

Juuulliiiiee that's not a good reason to pull me away.

Thanks for the thread everyone. I like having threads filled with cute family moments like this one. I feel as if I haven't met my cute family quota in a while, so this was very refreshing!

Thanks to everyone who participated, let me know what you thought of it.

In terms of schedule, I'm not sure if I'll run on Saturday. Stay tuned to twitter and we'll see how that works out.
