Interlude: Pull the Lever

Fitting the goggles firmly over your eyes, you crowd close to the edge of the device with the other girls in curiosity. Tomoe-san had said it was something that could, within a small space, shift the dimensional state of the invisible stuff Rin and Aiha found so it could be observed. This kind of thing goes over your head by a wide margin, but at least it should be cool to watch.

“Alright, kids,” the dark haired woman says as she shoos you back from the device, “Too close and you might lose your eyebrows,”

“It wouldn’t do to frighten them now, Hotaru,” the tall man behind the three of you, your best friend’s dad Mamoru Chiba, comments in amusement.

“Well, she probably isn’t trying to frighten us. I think she’s serious. Look at the aperture at the top of-” your friend Aiha begins to drone on in technical terms that you recognize but aren’t certain if you’d really parse the meaning of.

You are Kanari Kino, and while you are a great student, the particulars of science on this scale escape you. Frankly, that’s fine.

Your friends, Rin and Aiha, back up with you at the good doctor’s suggestion.

“So, is it bright and flashy?” Rin asks from beside you.

“Should that matter, we’re seeing something really cool,” you tease her and stick out your tongue at the younger girl.

“Alright, it's charged. Get ready everyone,” Tomoe-san says with an even tone as she pulls a small level to her side.

There is a point of light ahead as a weird electric whine fills the room. It takes beautiful form as strange shapes manifest just outside of your perception in the flare ahead. Something amazing is-

Quest Start

~Koyomi-chan,~ you say hesitantly to your younger sister over the chrome and fancy looking receiver in your hand, ~I think something just happened. I have to go,~

“Is everything alright?” your younger sister asks after you in concern, “What was that noise?”

~Hopefully a benign and messy lab accident,~ you say casually as your sister gasps.

You peer through the translucent yellow substance coating the other side of the bay window in Tomoe-sensei’s office. From there you can see the full spread of her main laboratory, through the distorted curvature of the ooze as it slides down the plexiglass or dense acrylic installation. There you can see the vaguely humanoid shapes in various states of disgust or discontent.

~Yup, benign. Everyone’s okay and covered in slime,~ you sigh, ~I’m going to go check it out,~

Ending the call, you return the phone to its cradle and head over to the door to the office.

You are Mikage Chiba, second year highschool student fifteen years old, and formerly you were the third Magical Girl to carry on the name of Sailor Moon after your mother and older sister. Now that name belongs to your little sister as unique and now mostly resolved circumstances brought you to abandon that legacy and distance yourself from it. Presently you aid your little sister and the other girls who stand beside her under a plethora of supernatural guises while you continue to cope and deal with your own problems.

And boy, do you have many problems.
>>
>>41141154

In the next room a number of your friends, your mentor, and your father stand covered in a slimy and likely viscous substance. Your mentor, Tomoe-sensei, was doing some kind of analysis of the then invisible and mostly incorporeal material that the young Rin Kumada and Aiha Mizuno had discovered during your ghost hunt. Kanari Kino had gotten swept up in things by her own declaration after learning of this escapade and now stands uncomfortably covered alongside them. Your father, Mamoru Chiba, was already present at the lab for other purposes.

Well, at least you know where Tomoe-sensei keeps towels in this lab. You shiver a bit looking at the wall of ooze slowly peeling off the office’s lab bay window, better grab a clean suit as well.

It doesn’t take long for your to traverse the familiar hallways of the laboratory and put on a white and baggy plastic outfit over your casual clothing. Pulling the stretchy hood up, you frame it around your face and tuck your hair inside of it. This proves to be a difficult task, even with your extremely tight braidwork.

The baggy suit hugs you comfortably, like loose footy pajamas, when all is said and done. Grabbing the towels out of their storage drawer you head over toward the main laboratory’s entrance. Through the clear door, you see the lot of them taking turns in using the emergency chemical wash shower. Rin Kumada and Aiha Mizuno already stand, mostly clear of visible slime and shivering waterlogged near the door. Your father and Tomoe-sensei are still covered in the curious muck, Kanari Kino stands beneath the gently dropping water inside the inset shower alongside the emergency eye wash station.

~Hey,~ you knock on the door and offer a dry wave, ~I come bearing towels. Are you guys okay, is it safe to enter?~

Tomoie-Sensei turns to the door first, the shivering girls are slower to the task, and gives a firm nod.

“Yes, whatever this substance is, it isn’t toxic,” she explains and wipes a bit off of her arm, “Phase shifting the ectoplasm all of you brought me had an unexpected side effect,”

She sighs and wipes a bit more of the slick away from her face as she approaches the door, opening the way for you.

“I suspect it has to do with this location’s previously observed natural tendency toward extra spacial phenomenon,” she explains with a cold uncertainty.

“You mean from back then,” your father asks in some concern.
>>
>>41142961

“Its nothing to worry about,” she sighs as Kanari awkwardly steps out of the wall recessed emergency shower, “The seal on the pathway to Tau Ceti holds,”

She passes you by as you start handing towels to the girl, heading toward the now open shower. Aiha and Rin both take the towels with urgent need amid their cold. Kanari takes it a bit slowly, seemingly unbothered yet, with a thanks.

“How is Koyomi-chan doing?” she asks flatly as she wipes her bangs out of her eyes.

~She’s doing better, we had a long talk,~ you survey the coverage of the lab, ~Good thing too, otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to get you towels,~

“Well, that’s something then,” Kanari sighs, “That stuff is so weird,”

“Mhmm,” Aiha nods and sticks her tongue out, “It's so disgusting,”

~Well, I guess now we have plenty of goo to experiment on,~ you offer a wry and careful smile to the girls.

“This isn’t the sample you brought me,” Tomoe-sensei calls over the din of the shower, “That is still in the petri dish. All of this is a side effect of the phase shift. Its a raw form of ectoplasm, think of it as the pus or suspension fluid within an abscess along intersecting dimensional planes,”

“I could have done without thinking about that,” Rin rubs her hair down with the towel.

“Luckily all the other equipment is inactive or externally covered,” your father observes suddenly clad in a familiar black tuxedo beside you and free of any ooze.

~Daddy?~ you query, ~Why’d you change?~

“My transformation is subtle, but it does have the benefit of cleaning me up a bit,” he smiles and pats you on top of the plastic hooded head.

“So, what happens next?” Kanari asks as she wrings out her ponytail.
>>
>>41142982

“I will be placing the sample in a spectrometer and let it run through a number of tests,” Tomoe-sensei says as she steps out of the shower, dripping wet.

She drops her lab coat in a waste basket and furtively inspects her white blouse, now soaked through.

“While we wait on that,” she sighs, “I suggest most of you dry off in the lounge, I will be getting changed and perhaps Mikage can show me the fractured Golden Crystal,”

~That sounds like a plan, Tomoe-sensei,~ you nod and pull the hood back from your clean suit as you step back into the hallway, ~What are you going to do about all the slime?~

“I have a system for that,” she explains, “Don’t worry about it too much,”

Your father, returning to his normal clothing in the blink of an eye, leads the girls to the lounge while Tomoe-sensei leads you to another part of this secret complex.

The footfalls of her comfortable shoes are wet and squishy as she takes the towel from you and pats herself down while in motion. The underside soles of your cleansuit squelch as well, leaving a slimy trail in their wake alongside Tomoe-sensei’s trail of water.

Peeling the cleansuit off, you leave it hanging from the cinched elastic at the waist, and shake your braid free of the constraint of the hood. She leads you to a room with mostly the smooth white material of the Moon Kingdom tech Luna and Artemis frequently pass out, a number of consoles and removable devices. She opens the door, but does not enter.

“I’m going to get changed,” she says simply, “I’ll be right back,”

~Oh, Sensei,~ you say, ~Before I forget, some of your students have been acting strange. I think it might have to do with this ghost,~

“Oh,” she asks curiously as she lays the towel across her shoulders, “Who?”

~I only know the name of one of them,~ you shrug, ~A classmate of mine from junior high, Momoko Nakajima,~

“Hmm,” she thinks to herself a moment, “I’ll look into it after during the week,”

~Okay,~ you nod and bite your lip, ~And, there is something else I wanted to ask you about when you got back,~

“Is everything alright, Mikage?” she asks in a controlled and steady tone that you know frames actual concern.

~It-it can wait until a bit later,~ you look a touch embarrassed, ~It has to do with my vampiric abilities,~
>>
>>41145506

“If there are specific concerns, I could have taken pointed and more specific scans and tests,” she says with some visible concern.

~No,~ you raise your hands, ~Not quite like that, it’s a bit more personal. Its about...can we talk about this when your shirt isn’t see through?~

“Oh,” she adjusts the way the towel hangs off her shoulders and over her chest in a suddenly demure manner, “Of course. Please excuse me,”

You wait there for a few minutes. Taking a seat on a smooth white bench along the far side of the room. When she returns, Tomoe-sensei is clad in dark track pants and a plaid sweater.

“Much better,” she cracks her neck, “Now then, lets take a look at the crystal,”

You draw out the locket and open it for her inspection. She takes it from you and inspects it with care, before putting it onto a surface on the smooth counter top and beneath a lense that extends from the wall.

“So, you said it was personal?” she queries as she inspects the crystal.

Relaying what you can remember of the dream to your teacher, through the filter of your own embarrassment, she pauses in her investigations and turns to regard you.

~So, with that in mind, do you think there could be side effects if I keep helping with Kairi’s depression by ‘medicating’ her problem with my emotional vampirism?~

She pauses in thought on your query before answering. Dwelling on it a moment and bringing a hand to her chin.

“I wouldn’t quite call your circumstance vampirism,” she explains and leans back against the counter, “It certainly shares some thematic elements, but this point I’d call your current circumstance Thymophage,”

~Greek?~
>>
>>41145539

“At least in language root. One who eats emotions,” she approaches you from the wall, “Mikage, I don’t judge you between the symbolism of your dream and the symbolism of your feeding method; I will offer that what you are giving Osaka-san is merely a temporary solution that might delay the resolution of her long term problems,”

Her hand falls to your shoulder.

“Your dream may be indicative of a specific worry, worry that you are fostering a dependency. Ultimately how you want to handle this is up to you,” Tomoe-sensei offers, “As I understand it, she was even more withdrawn than you were,”

Great. Just, great.

There is a chiming sound, and your mentor strides back over to the counter as a screen opens across the wall.

“Interesting,” there is the curl of a smile in her voice, “I do believe we can restore the crystal to a complete state. If you’d like we can make the attempt now,”

~I have to admit, I was thinking more about Helios's suggestion of meditation,~ you fidget a bit as she hands you the locket back, closing it as it's pressed into your hand, ~kinda hoping that I could help bring myself back together more going down that path. Do you really think we can get it back together now? Honestly, I'd like to know more about the process either way,~

She nods and sits down next to you.

“Well, I have two processes I could pursue with you right now if you’d like,” she says as her face takes the cool seriousness you are most accustomed to from her, “one certainly makes use of meditation, but within an enclosed shield while an oscillating magical current is passed through you at a low yield. It would take a few hours,”

~It isn’t just meditation on its own?~ you query.

“Meditation on your extenuating issues would certainly be good for you,” Tomoe-sensei nods, “but to restore the crystal it would take time and many sessions on its own. And based on your own shifting emotions, there would be a chance of catastrophic feedback. To say nothing regarding any influence the changes the enemy has caused in you might yield,”

~The darkness could infect the crystal?~

“I don’t know yet,” she explains, “I still need to run more tests. I honestly wish I still had Ami here to help with that,”
>>
>>41147310

>Offer the stolen darkness to her, not that you have it now
>Say nothing about the stolen darkness
>Write in

~And the other method?~

“I match the Crystal fragments with their sonic resonance frequency, and use my magic and your own to bring it back together,” she says with confidence and pride, “There is a slim chance of an energy cascade of the Gem’s natural power over a several block berth of this location, but with you exerting your own will on it we can ensure that its the Crystal’s purification potential and not its destructive potential,”

You sit silently on those explanations.

“Though if you want, you can use the blast shield as a place to mediate naturally,” she says plainly, “I understand if you don’t want to force it back together if you don’t have to; but we don’t know how quickly the enemy is moving, now that we have some vague idea of their origin and potential goals,”

Hey, we should totally remember to ask about evil clone grandma while we're here.
>>
~Tomoe-sensei,~ you offer, ~Say I got my hands on the pure darkness the enemy has been collecting to infect people and witnessed the process they made it with. Would that intel and sample be helpful?~

She pauses and gives you an earnest smile.

“That would be very helpful, Mikage,”

~Okay, it’s at the house right now. I can bring it to the lab later or if you were stopping by to see Usa-neesan again I can pass it to your care,~

“How did you get your hands on it?” she asks with some concern, “And I’m impressed you haven’t eaten it yet,”

~Hey!~

“Sorry, it was just a joke,” she looks away in soft embarrassment, “I mean you are your mother’s daughter,”

~That isn’t a fair comparison, Tomoe-sensei,~ you plead in feigned hurt.

“I’m trying to tease,” she huffs, “It's just something friends can do. Anyway, good job getting it,”

~Thank you,~ you sigh, ~how I came to have it is a bit of a long story. I’m not really up to sharing that right now,~

“I understand,” you glare at her, dubiously, “No, I mean it. Tell me in your own time, if at all,”

~hmph,~ you watch her in cautious appraisal before offering a short laugh, ~You know, Sensei, you’re much cooler than you used to be,~

She crosses her arms and looks away from you.

“I’m just as cool as I ever was,” she asserts, “I’m just better at expressing it,”

~Fine,~ you relent, ~Oh...I think I’m going to wait on restoring the crystal. I need more time to think on the methods you offered,~

Her expression shifts.

“That’s a responsible course of action, Mikage,” you find yourself fidgeting with nervous energy at her praise, “It shows just how much you’ve grown,”
>>
>>41148186

You bask in that praise for a moment longer, before you are reminded of something. Something rather important.

~Well, as grown as I am I still have a ton of questions about things for Usa-neesan and Helios. Actually for you and Helios as well,~ you pause in caution, ~About the end of the Silver Millennium and Elysium,~

Her features fall, subtly and for a moment.

“Yes,” she says, “Given what we’ve learned about the enemy that point in time is of paramount importance. As is my unrealized failure to carry out my duty,”

~Oh,~ you let out a slight breath of relief, ~I was worried about how to approach that with you, all things considered. I’m actually a bit relieved you came to that conclusion on your own,~

“Any relief in times like this is a blessing. Remember that,” Tomoe-sensei fixes you with a serious stare.

~Err,~ you find your nervousness and anxiety increasing, not that you outwardly show it too much, ~I will, sensei,~

The two of you sit there a moment, before she rises and heads toward the door. You return the locket beneath your shirt and follow after her.

~Say, Sensei,~

“Yes?”

~Are there any developments with my clone grandma?~

She stops in her tracks, then turns around to face you. Her expression is serious and worried, though it settles quickly.

“There are extensive developments,” she says in a low voice as uncertainty takes her features, “Developments and implications that have me quite worried,”
