You sigh. You might as well go pay a visit to Amy, as it's the least you can do. You just wonder how she'll react to your presence. Acceptance? Anger? Relief? You're not really sure and that kind of makes you nervous. However, you were already committed. You reluctantly pull yourself out of bed and get dressed.

"Hey! Karla!" Lara says happily as she ambushes you with a hug from behind the moment you close your door. "You gonna go visit Amy, too?"

Fuck, how did she know? You swear she was psychic sometimes.

"Yeah, I guess." You grumble.

"Cool! Me and Lil were just on our way there, too!" Lara gives a wide grin. "Why don't you come with us?"

"It'll certainly make Amy feel better to see all three of us." Lilian smiles as she walks up from behind in her typical reserved fashion.

"I suppose." You sigh.

The trek over to the field hospital is an oddly lonely one. You're aware that a lot of base staff was shipped out to work on the crashed (or "landed", as Jager had so defensively put it) Gyges aerial battleship. Still, it was a bit alien to see almost nobody on the tarmac besides the occasional supply shipment.

"It's pretty empty out here." Lara frowns. "You don't think they're leaving defenses here a bit thin?"

"I heard that with the Gyges so close to the limits of our defense zone, most of Atlas' remaining assets have been sent there to protect it." Lilian sighs. "A bit of a waste, in my opinion. It's practically a wreck, anyways."

"Well, at least she's still got her Super Hornet to fall back on." You say, trying to stay positive. "Anyways, do either of you know how bad she was hit?"

"Pretty bad, but it could've been worse." Lilian frowns. "The missile exploded right next to the cockpit. If it were any other plane, she'd probably have been mortally wounded or killed instantly. Since her cockpit was armored, it absorbed most of the blast, but she still caught a bunch of shrapnel."

"Fortunately, it wasn't anything too bad that they couldn't treat here." Lara grins. "Don't worry, Amy's as tough as the Warthog she flies!"

"Yeah, I suppose." You nod.

At this point, you've finally reached the hospital and make your way the room Amy is in, and note it's the same one Dawn was posted up in.

"Oh, this is gonna be good." Lara grins as she makes the same realization you do.

You rather reluctantly open the door and see Amy sitting upright in her bed, bandages covering her arms, chest, and one of her eyes. She also as an extremely grumpy, exasperated look on her face, though not at you or her condition.

Dawn, who at this point has recovered enough to be able to walk around in, was having her way with Amy's hair. It was a veritable rainbow of colors, bright sparkles, colorful hair decorations, and topped off with a pair of large bunny ears, apparently Dawn's idea of "cheering up" Amy. Dawn herself was still humming as she was tying Amy's hair into a pair of twin pigtails.

"Don't. Say. Anything." Amy growls.

"PFFFHAHA, yeah, that's great, Dawn." You quickly recover, patting her on the head. "May you have luck in all your endeavors."

"Thanks, Karla!" Dawn says happily, completely oblivious to your sarcasm.

Amy just continues to glower at you, not amused at you encouraging Dawn's antics. You suppose now was a good time to make your exit.

I've been thinking on this myself. On the one hand I want to fly the Morgan exactly as is, with Pixy's paint-scheme and without changing it.

On the other hand, I felt it might be cool to combine paint-schemes a bit -- so long as it was done skillfully enough -- to emphasize that "Yeah, this is motherfucking Pixy's plane" while also saying that it's *ours* too...

The question was always whether to keep Pixy's, or try to add a bit of our own touch (while obviously keeping the red wing, of course) such as maybe adding our own color; or maybe adding the drawing...

How much to keep? That is the question. (Definitely want to keep the red wingtip of course.)

The three of you quickly follow Sam over to the main hangar, where you see Smokey and surprisingly enough, Samantha's immediate superior General Treister. You immediately stiffen to attention and salute, and instinct ingrained into you from your Osean Air Force days. To your sides, you note Lara and Lilian doing the same.

"Aha! So there are my Wild Cards!" General Treister chortles. "No sense in salutin' me or anything! Not like any of us are soldiers anymore!"

"I still think it's good to maintain some modicum of professionalism, sir." Samantha sighs in exasperation. "Just because we're mercenaries doesn't mean we can just throw all the rules out the window."

"Sam, you think about these things too hard!" Treister chortles as she slaps Samantha on the back rather hard, nearly causing her to drop her clipboard. "Besides, these girls here are quickly becomin' our top earners! Gotta show them some respect, ya know!"

"Understood, sir." Samantha sighs.

"So, what exactly are we doing?" You ask.

"Due to his rank, importance to the company, as well as the fact the Gyges is still too close to the contested zone, we believe it's best he have an escort with him. "Babysitting. Great." Lara silently mumbles, though the split second venomous glare from Samantha indicates she caught it.

"Anyways, that's the gist of the mission." Samantha concludes. "Escort the General there, wait till he finishes his tour, and then escort him back to the Pillar, and we're done. Simple as that."

You get the ugly feeling that it's not going to be as simple as Samantha says, but you don't say that out loud.

"I also see here that you're scheduled to have the Morgan repaired." Samantha says as she looks through her notes. "We might have a problem here. Smokey is scheduled to head over to assist in repairing the Gyges. Considering his experience, I think he'll be a great asset to the salvage efforts. However, if you want, we can have him stay here and work on the Morgan."

"If I start now, I can probably get it ready by the next mission." Smokey adds.

"But of course, that means he won't be working on the Gyges." Sam points out.

"Well, it sounds like we be in a bit of a conundrum here!" Treister chuckles.

Lara's turn on is her Mercenary enthusiasm of pure Dogfighting and hatred of escort missions.
Amy gets her turn on when it comes to BBBRRRRTTT runs and bombing missions.
Karla or (/tg/)'s motivations... revolve around and Belkan honor (our current path).
Then what's Lillian's turn on? She's somewhat of a mystery to me aside from her fiance.

This time Samantha nearly drops her clipboard of her own accord, her eyes as wide as dinner plates.

"You used to be an AWACS captain, right? I figure you could transfer some of that experience over to an aerial battleship!" Treister smiles. "If you can run that bird with the same efficiency you did with your old one, then we've got nothing to fear!"

About half an hour later, your planes are prepped and take off from the tarmac, leaving the Pillar behind as you all head for the downed Gyges.

"Wild Cards, good to see you!" Loki says happily. "Escort duty this time, I see."

"Yeah yeah, gotta pay the bills, right?" You sigh. "What have you got for us today?"

"Wolf and Butterfly Teams have been running continuous CAP lights over the Gyges to discourage attacks. It's working so far, but satellite imaging shows Dahl massing planes at one of their forward bases. It's possible they're planning a big attack on the ship."

"Most likely they're waiting for Butterfly and Wolf teams to exhaust themselves after repeated flights. They know they have the numbers." Samantha grumbles.

"Well, either way, the skies are clear today." Loki tries to assure you. "You should be good to go all the way through."

"Yeah, I'm sure." You say, not quite convinced.

A few more minutes pass by uneventfully. However, in the distance, you can see the outline of the massive Gyges highlighted on the horizon as you get closer to the crash site. Your grip on the stick tightens at the sight.

"Hey there, Valkyrie." Wolf says happily. "Come to join the fun monotony of CAP flights?"

"Worse. Escort duty." You sigh.

"Ooooh, I don't envy you there." Wolf winces.

Meanwhile, you watch as the private plane carrying Samantha, Treister, and Smokey lands at a temporary airstrip set up next to the crashed (landed) Gyges. Already, you could see hundreds of workers and assorted construction equipment littered around the fallen craft as repairs are hastily made to make it airworthy again.

"Anyways, while wait, we've been picking up some intermittent contacts just east of here." Wolf explains. "Probably drones or some kind of recon birds. But we can't stray too far from the Gyges here. Mind taking a look for us?"
